It is time for some FESTIVAL fun! The Town of Herndon, and especially the Parks and Recreation Department, is excited to bring you the 34th Annual Herndon Festival. As always we provide you free admission, parking and shuttle service! This guide provides you with information and festival highlights that you can come back to throughout the event to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Stay up-to-date and connected by following us on Facebook and @herndonfestival. A complete entertainment schedule is available here. This year our entertainment lineup is one of the most musically diverse lineups in our history! We have world music, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk. We have a DJ to spin. There is soul, folk, modern and traditional Americana roots, roots rock and a jug band. We have pop music and a boy band. We have country music. On Sunday afternoon, we have a British Invasion of British Pop featuring Steve Lauri from the Hollies, the English Channel, and the Return celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s visit to America. And of course, plenty of Rock n’ Roll! Make sure to stop by and enjoy some of our public art. Get a heavy dose of LOVE with a 16 ft. high LOVEwork, which is part of the Virginia is for Lovers traveling LOVEwork located on the Town Hall green. Take your photo with the LOVEwork and make sure to post them on Facebook—Virginia is for Lovers. Or stop by the HMC Lawn on Saturday to enjoy WindArt provided by Decorate the Wind. Our sponsors provide plenty of opportunities to sample some fun. The Town Hall Green will feature our Title Sponsor, VW and their dynamic displays, face painter and special guests. You will also find a variety of sponsors providing samples throughout the Festival. Look for Ristorante serving up frozen pizza, Sparkling Ice beverages, Bonterra Winery, and Dasani. Children’s Hands-on-Art activities, and other fun activities are all part of Kids’ Alley (across from The Breeze). Just listen for the laughter as our strolling entertainers and character guests amuse the whole family. Need a little charge? Take a break and recharge your cell phone! Just head over to our free cell phone charging station in the Café Stage area, next to the Wine Garden. While you charge up, post those status updates on Facebook, Tweet your favorite bands pictures, or Like a new business you met at the Business Expo. Find your favorite festival foods or try something new. Delicious foods are available throughout the site, including up and down Lynn St. in the Café Stage Food Court, in the carnival and on Station St. near Town Hall. For a cold brew or a glass of wine, visit one of our civic groups - the Council for the Arts of Herndon in the Café Food Court, Rotary Club near the HMC lawn entrance or the Optimists at the corner of Lynn and Station Streets.

Please take time to thank our sponsors, by participating in our first ever “Sponsor Scavenger Hunt.” Stop by and take a selfie with your favorite sponsors, post it to your Facebook and tag the Herndon Festival or Tweet your photo with #HerndonFestival. We will award prizes to people who post the most photos. Some of our generous sponsors and partners include our Title sponsor, VW, newcomers Dulles Electric Supply & Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and longtime supporters TD Bank, Northwest Federal Credit Union, and Apple Federal Credit Union. See the back page for a full list of sponsors. Remember to take advantage of the free bike valet service, ride over and park your bike with us, we’ll be happy to keep an eye on it for you. Check our Facebook page throughout the weekend for the special daily happenings so you don’t miss anything. And don’t forget your souvenirs! Cute tank tops, baseball caps and warm hooded sweatshirts, plus traditional long and short sleeve t-shirts in fabulous colors! BoDeans

7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. - HMC Stage

“I’ve always thought of the BoDeans as a truly American band,” says Kurt Neumann, the founder, primary writer and frontman of the veteran Milwaukee-based group. Neumann fully embraces that notion on American Made, the BoDeans’ eleventh album. Its dozen songs are laced through with strands of indigenous roots elements—Heartland hoedown folk (“American,” with guest Jake Owen spinning out the guitar solo), Celtic-rooted mountain music (“Walk Through This World,” “Flyaway”), zydeco (“Everything You Wanted”), Southern roadhouse soul (“Don’t Bring Me Down”), Chicago blues (“Shake the Fever”) and 100-proof roots rock (“All the World”). These tracks are played with heartfelt emotion as well as jaw-dropping skillfulness by the band—Neumann on vocals and guitars, original member Michael Ramos (Patty Griffin, John Mellencamp) on keyboards and accordion, longtime BoDeans bassist Ryan Bowman and new member Warren Hood, a fiddle/violin virtuoso from Austin.

Atticus

6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - Cafe Stage

In 1992, Atticus Miranda experienced his first warehouse party which began a lifelong obsession with the sounds of the underground. He spent more than two decades honing his skills as a technical DJ and experimenting with production. Through the years, Atticus has played many styles but two characteristics consistently emerged in the music, regardless of genre, that provided a solid and true direction for his sound: rhythm and bass. Atticus focuses his production on beats and low end expressed in styles that range from dubby and soulful arrangements to saturated and rhythmic soundscapes. DJ performances are technical with use of classic DJ skills while taking full advantage of digital technology. From deep and dark to hype and energetic sets, Atticus takes you on a journey into sound guided by rhythm and bass. Currently, Atticus is one of the Forecast residents at The Backbar in DC.

SATURDAY HEADLINERS Urban Funk

7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. - HMC Stage

Since their release of Heroes and Legends in 2010, Urban Funk has been performing in the Metropolitan region to critical acclaim. Showcasing the dance chart hits of the 70’s; this venerable period of music is the stepping stone for every performance. Whether it is James Brown, Marvin Gaye, or WAR; the hits keep coming and the lawn is guaranteed to be filled with a dancing crowd. Wayne Sulc and Tommy Lepson front this group along with the funk fusion sound of a rhythm section featuring Steve Long on Keys, Mike Davis on Bass, Gary Crockett on Drums, and Tim Cutrona on Percussion. This newly formed collaboration between highly renowned and talented musicians brings years of experience to the Urban Funk in a way no other “new” group could replicate. With a home base at Clydes of Chevy Chase, Urban Funk has also performed at The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Hamilton, Mason District Park, JV’s, and The Music Café, with more to come.

The Last Bison

7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. - Depot Stage

The Last Bison is anything but typical. The seven-member ensemble led by Ben has seemingly risen from the marshes of southeastern Virginia to captivate the national music scene with a rare blend of folk that is poetically steeped in classical influences. Band members describe the sound as “mountain-top chamber.” Already the band has drawn flattering, though imperfect, comparisons to indie rock superstars the likes of Mumford & Sons, The Decemberists and Fleet Foxes. Each of those bands has carried folk rock into the mainstream but none of them have a front man that shares the stage with his father and sister. The Last Bison is a tight knit community of family and friends that boasts a sound all its own.

THE

ON

The Last Bison’s live shows transport audiences from urban music halls to another, less familiar era. Rich melodies accent unabashedly spiritual lyrics. Traditional folk instruments resonate with unexpected arrangements –sharing the musical space with lush family harmonies, classical strings, and earthy percussion. Band members appear to have stepped out of an 18th century stagecoach. The look hints at the band’s roots in colonial Virginia, while the sound transcends a defining era.

The Speedbumps

7 p.m. - 8 p.m. - Cafe Stage

Roots raspy vocals paired with an indie folk groove have earned The Speedbumps an Independent Music Award and showcases across the globe. Their eclectic mix of hollow bodied instruments paired with honest songwriting has brought praise from some of the industry’s top tastemakers including Relix Magazine, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, American Songwriter Magazine, CMT Edge and Americana-UK. Because their approachable, Midwest style easily fits the soundtrack of people’s everyday lives, the band’s music has been selected for various TV and film projects including PBS’s Road Trip Nation and the feature film Molly’s Girl. In addition, the Bumps have shared the stage with Andrew Bird, G-Love and Special Sauce, Amos Lee, Matt Nathanson, OKGO, Tim Easton, Crosby Stills & Nash, and Chrissie Hynde among others. In 2012, The Speedbumps were invited to collaborate with The Canton Symphony Orchestra resulting in a joint performance of songs from their first two albums at the historical Canton Palace Theatre. The band’s bassist, Kevin Martinez, (who has a master’s degree in Music Composition) spent 9 months developing and writing parts for all the orchestra members to perform alongside the band. In February 2015, both groups will come together on stage again for a joint performance, featuring many songs off of The Speedbumps third and most recent album, The Harbors We Seek.

The English Channel

2:45 p.m. –3:45 p.m. - HMC Stage

The English Channel (“All English, All the Time”) performs the incredible British hits of the mid 60’s and 70’s...classic rock & pop songs from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Who, The Hollies, Cream, Petula Clark, Yes, The Zombies, Moody Blues, The Kinks, Lulu, Queen & many many others. Each song is meticulously recreated to sound just like the original recording, just like you remember it. You’ll hear lush harmonies, a tight rhythm section, shreddin’ guitars, rich orchestration and some songs you never thought you’d hear a band play live.

NG THE E

LISH

CHA

With its passion and enthusiasm, The English Channel was voted “Most Fun Band” by the readers of Richmond’s STYLE WEEKLY magazine. The timeless quality of the music of this genre appeals to all generations and each song the band plays is someone’s “all time favorite.” Soon after its inception in 2001, The English Channel became a popular headliner at many regional festivals and concerts throughout the mid-Atlantic states. Because of its unique niche, the band has also opened for national acts such as “1964: The Tribute”, “Abba, the Music” and even performed for the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

The Return

4 p.m. – 6 p.m. - HMC Stage

The Return got its start back in 1995 when four young friends got together to play their favorite Beatles songs just for the fun of it. As time went on, they began to polish up their act a bit and became fixated on the idea of striving for the highest level of authenticity possible. They wanted to recreate the early sixties Beatles concert experience from the tiniest detail (John Lennon’s on-stage gumchewing) to the biggest, most expensive details (using exact replicas of the instruments and gear the Beatles used). They got an agent and began to command the attention of more widely renowned clients not only in the United States, but in multiple other countries as well—including England. The Return has crafted a truly authentic, entertaining, and very exciting show. And in doing so, the band not only delivers a near perfect reproduction of a live Beatles concert—they capture the very essence of the Beatles themselves.

Art In Public Places Wind Art and LOVE

Find the LOVE The Virginia Tourism Corporation has brought an oversized LOVE artwork to the Herndon Festival as part of a state and local partnership to promote tourism. The artwork, which is 16 feet long and more than 6 feet high, is part of the Virginia is for Lovers campaign and promotes the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation. Visitors can come see the LOVE on display at the Herndon Festival through June 1. After the Herndon Festival it will be on display at Celebrate Fairfax at the Fairfax County Government Center. Visitors are encouraged to take a family picture in front of the artwork and share it on Facebook at www.Facebook. com/VirginiaisforLovers or on Twitter, using the special hashtag #LOVEVA.

Wind Art on the HMC Lawn - Saturday Only Decorate the Wind is a group of volunteers headed by Allan Robb of Fairfax, VA. They create colorful displays of banners, streamers, inflated shapes and kites, which depict artistic themes flying in the wind. Motion, shape, color and function are coordinated to present an eye pleasing display. From fifty to a hundred pieces, all flying from a wide collection of poles, can be included in a display. Each wind art display is unique in that it has to be tailored to wind conditions and available space. The wind art show for the Herndon Festival is titled “Spring Time”. A row of brightly colored banners is arranged in a rainbow configuration to convey the coming of warm spring days. Long colorful streamers fly high to represent gentle spring breezes. A flock of swallows soars and dives over the display. Butterfly kites and oversized flowers round out the display as the wind permits. A large group of enthusiatic volunteers allows for the complexity and size of the Decorate the Wind displays. Allan Robb has been flying kites of many sizes and shapes for forty years. He began specializing in ground displays of wind art about fifteen years ago to adapt to the light and quirky winds typical of spring kite festivals in the Washington DC area. His award winning wind art shows have been a key part of kite festivals at the Washington Monument for several years running. His brother Curt Robb, Katie Crean, and Kate and Kevin Caimi make up the Decorate the Wind team for this year’s Herndon Festival.
