ermann’s founders dreamed of a grand new city on the American frontier that would be “German in every particular.” On December 6, 1837, a band of 17 intrepid souls from the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia stepped off the last steamboat of the season at a site their scouts had chosen for its resemblance to the Rhine Valley. Finding the terrain too steep to farm, they covered the hillsides with vineyards. By the turn of the century, Hermann was one of the world’s leading wine-producing regions. Then came Prohibition, which plunged the town into the Depression a decade before the rest of the country.

The Heart of Missouri

Wine Country At the turn of the century, Hermann was one of the largest wine-growing regions in the country. Prohibition destroyed the vineyards, but not the vintner’s art. Today, history is repeating itself as a talented new generation of winemakers once again wins worldwide acclaim.

Much of downtown is a lovely historic district filled with 19th-century buildings.

Explore the Past A memorial to our city’s namesake, a German warrior who defeated the Romans, stands guard at the entrance to town. Nearby, Deutschheim State Historic Site depicts the lives of Missouri’s German settlers. Local history is on display at the Historic Hermann Museum in the German School building, where the town clock has tolled since 1890. The Gasconade County Archives holds a treasure trove of records dating back to the early 1800s. The beautiful Gasconade County Courthouse sits atop a bluff overlooking the Missouri River.

Ride Your Bike For serious training or a leisurely family outing, Hermann is a favorite destination for cyclists. The 225-mile-long Katy Trail, the nation’s longest rails-to-trails project, is just a mile north of Hermann. The trail is easily accessed via the Missouri River bridge, which has a protected 8-foot-wide bike lane. Hermann’s famous hills offer hard-core enthusiasts 400 feet of vertical climb within the city limits. Route maps are available for cycling trips through the beautiful rolling hills of Missouri Wine Country. Numerous cycling events are held throughout the year, including the popular Tour of Hermann in April.

Let us entertain you! The Showboat Community Theatre stages popular variety shows, plays and musicals. The Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheater is an open-air entertainment venue. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show!
