Camp gearing up for summer of fun! By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director Hermann Sons Life Camp is a hectic place to work at this time. And that’s a great thing! We are gearing up for a fantastic summer of fun for our junior members. The Boerne ISD is currently utilizing our Hilltop facility for its BOA programs. And we love having them here! I was walking to the Dining Hall one day and simply hearing the joyous noise of campers playing at the Gaga pits was awesome! Anyone who has worked in Camp will tell you how great that sound is - especially in February. The Boerne students also are using the river and the canoes and kayaks. We cannot wait for our campers to enjoy a lazy morning or afternoon at the river. We are gearing up for a very busy spring. The camps look great. Gary, who joined us in October, is really outdoing himself. The Hilltop pool looks great! The Riverside pool will be resurfaced this summer. Staffing is going great! It’s looking like we will be able to run a full Camp on both the Hilltop and Riverside campuses. While we’re still looking for a few nurses, I’m excited with the process of filling up our staff lists. We have a few Zoom training sessions on the calendar to help our staff better prepare for the campers’ arrival. ENROLLMENT OPENING SOON! Yay! All age eligible campers (aged 9-14) will be emailed and mailed when we open enrollment for our camper sessions. See BE, Pg. 6

Get Involved! Make a Difference! in 2022 By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales Spring is just around the corner, bringing with it better weather and bluebonnets! Now is a great time to get involved with your lodge! You should be hearing (and seeing) about our 2022 lodge membership growth campaign at your next lodge gathering. We are calling it “Get involved! Make a Difference!” We are counting on you to help us grow membership and help strengthen our community by getting involved. An upcoming opportunity to get involved will be held on Saturday, April 23, at our Camp in Comfort. Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett and his staff need a little help getting the Camp ready for the arrival of our junior members this summer. This Volunteer Work Day is a great chance to connect with your lodge members and other members. (Not to mention it’s a beautiful drive and Ian is always an amazing host!) If you haven’t had a chance to visit Camp, it’s also a great time to take a look around and see all that Camp has to offer. The

Camp is nestled in the beautiful Hill Country and offers so much wholesome fun and fellowship for our children. Other organizations are also welcome to rent the facilities outside of Camp season. You can find more information on the Hermann Sons Life website under Member Benefits/Camp/ Camp Facility Rentals. Convention is also just around the corner. It will be held in May at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos. Be sure to get to know the candidates who are seeking a seat on the Board of Directors and talk with your delegates to make your voice heard. It’s a busy season in the Hermann Sons Life organization. It’s more important than ever to ensure that we are bringing guests to lodge meetings and extending them a warm welcome when they do come. It’s always easier to engage with those people you already know but make it a point to sit with new members or guests so they’ll see the community opportunity that is present in Hermann Sons Life. The community of Friendship, Love and Loyalty

and service to our community that our founding members envisioned is more relevant than ever. It’s hard not to get emotional when I see the Retirement Home, the Home Office and Camp and Dance programs all running like clockwork. I know that the founders would be proud to see Hermann Sons Life thriving but we need to add to the membership rolls if we want to keep it that way. I am just a phone call away and my door is always open. Hermann Sons Life means so much to me. This is so much more than a job, it is a calling. The calling is to see that Hermann Sons Life is around for generations to come. Whether you have a suggestion, compliment or want to tell me about something that needs improving, I am here to listen and do what I can. While I can’t always promise I can make a change, I will always make sure your voice is heard by bringing it to the attention of our leadership team. We are here to help you get the most out of life!

Hermann Sons Life earns FSR of A, Exceptional COLUMBUS – Hermann Sons Life has earned a Financial Stability Rating of A, Exceptional from Demotech Inc. In response to the rating, Vice President of Sales Robin Czarnek said, ”Hermann Sons Life is honored to have earned an FSR of A from a well-respected rating firm like Demotech. She continued, “Demotech has been at the forefront of innovation in the insurance ratings marketplace. Their unprecedented approach has played a

vital role in the industry allowing them to serve the needs of unique carriers such as fraternals and geographically based firms. When industry experts researched the survival rates of carriers reviewed by Demotech and compared those survival rates to those competing rating agencies, Demotech consistently exceeded its own published expected results at each level of rating while comparing favorably to the other rating services.” Demotech Inc. is a financial

analysis firm specializing in evaluating the financial stability of regional and specialty insurers. Since 1985, Demotech has served the insurance industry by assigning accurate, reliable and proven Financial Stability Ratings® (FSRs). FSRs are a leading indicator of financial stability, providing an objective baseline of the future solvency of an insurer. Demotech’s philosophy is to review and evaluate insurers based on their area of focus and execution

of their business model rather than solely on financial size. Demotech was the first to review and rate independent regional and specialty insurers. Sharon Romano Petrelli, vice president and co-founder of Demotech, noted that “for more than a century, fraternals have embodied the principles driving contemporary environmental, social and governance standards, ESG. Fraternals have operated through local lodges that focus on volunteerism to enhance the

quality of life in the community, using charitable, educational, social, and other initiatives. Importantly, they do so under the auspices of state departments of insurance and federal regulations. If one focuses on ESG principles, I respectfully suggest that fraternals developed the original business model to focus on ESG. We are pleased to acknowledge that Hermann Sons Life can execute their important mission and retain the financial stability to serve its members.”

Presenting the check were two of the lodge’s officers, Al golfers with the longest drive, Stryk, left, and Ben Diaz. Goliad Lodge has also made a $15,000 donation. When renovations are com- most accurate drive and closplete, a suite will be named after each of these lodges.

Funds will help renovate Home’s Annex COMFORT – Funds are being collected for a renovation project at the Retirement Home. The plan is to renovate the suites in the Home’s Annex and then make them available for rent to members. The renovations will include buying furniture and televisions and making minor repairs. Renting the Annex, which is

not currently being used by member residents, will help offset the cost of operating the Home. Local lodges have been given the opportunity to sponsor a suite. For a donation of $15,000, the suite will be named after that lodge. So far, two lodges, Goliad and Gulf, have made donations.

Kirby Lodge has made a $325 donation to the program. Lodges can still make a donation to the renovation project. Send the check to Hermann Sons Life, Attn: Jacqueline Klein, P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, TX 78297. Be sure to indicate that the donation is for the renovation project.

COMFORT – After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the Retirement Home Chili and Pinto Bean Cook-off is back. The scholarship fund-raiser will be held March 12 on the grounds of the Retirement Home outside Comfort. Everyone is welcome to enter. There are two divisions. The event is sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI). Those cooks will compete against each other to earn points that will qualify them for the international cookoff held each year in Terlingua, Texas. Non-CASI or amateur

cooks have their own division. An important change has been made to the bean competition. Cooks can enter only pinto beans in this year’s competition. In the past, any type of bean was eligible. There also will be separate showmanship competitions for CASI cooks and amateurs. No pre-registration is required. Cooks will register Saturday morning when they arrive. Cost to enter chili is $20 for CASIsanctioned cooks and $15 for amateurs. Everyone pays $10 to enter the pinto bean competition. There will be cash prizes for

the top three bean entries. A raffle will be held to raise additional money for the scholarship fund. A party will be held Friday night for cooks and their teams who arrive early. There is plenty of room for RVs. Proceeds from the event are used to present four $1,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are members of Hermann Sons Life. Despite not being able to hold the cook-off for the past two years, scholarships were still awarded. For more information, call the Home at 830-995-2724.
