This year, we celebrate Heritage’s 45th Anniversary, and exciting things are happening here – all season long. A major highlight is this year’s traveling exhibit: Wicked Plants, featuring the deadliest botanicals on the planet. The exhibit, inspired by Amy Stewart’s best-selling book Wicked Plants: The Weed that Killed Lincoln’s Mother and other Botanical Atrocities, is a fun, hands-on experience for both kids and adults.
Also new this year is David Rogers’ Big Bugs, featuring ten way-largerthan-life sculptures of your favorite creepy crawlies, including his signature 25-foot-long ant.

Families with younger children will be excited to learn about the unveiling of The Hundred Acre School, an innovative new STEM preschool here at Heritage. And in addition to 100 SM acres of gardens and trails, Hidden Hollow outdoor discovery center, and an impressive automobile gallery, children and adults of all ages will continue to enjoy our collection of fun and educational events – including anniversary parties, live summer concerts, workshops taught by experts, and special shows, festivals, and tours. 6

Even before we open for the season, there is a lot in the works in the winter months. As we prepare to open The Hundred Acre School in September, we are welcoming potential students and their families for Open Houses, accepting applications, and educating the public about this revolutionary new preschool concept. If you’re ready to see some vibrant blooms in the cold of March, you’ll want to head to the annual Boston Flower Show, where we will have a Wicked Plants garden and preview of what’s to come at Heritage in April.

As yellow bursts of daffodils emerge on the grounds, we kick off another exciting season. Prepare to be spooked, awed, and filled with wonder at the April opening of Wicked Plants. May brings our signature rhododendrons – not just acres and acres of vibrant, multi-colored blooms, but special tours, celebrations, and workshops as well. Also in May – the coming of David Rogers’ Big Bugs, a sculpture exhibit that will infest the gardens with giant insects.
APRIL Wicked Plants Exhibit Opening
Saturday, April 19 Special Exhibitions Gallery This new feature exhibit will introduce you to the evildoers lurking in your backyard and beyond. Enjoy a hands-on experience with some of the world’s most diabolical botanicals – without the risk of intoxication, addiction, dismemberment, or other danger. Wicked Plants showcases more than 100 plants and immerses you into a macabre world where plants hold the power. Poisonous, carnivorous, or just plain nasty, the diabolical botanicals represented throughout Wicked Plants are shown in all their fearful glory. Meet the infamous plants that have left their mark on history and claimed many an unfortunate victim. Upon entering a decrepit old home, you’ll meet the crime family of the plant world, the deadly Nightshades. A veritable rogue’s gallery features portraits of these intriguing characters who beguile unsuspecting victims. Each room features different plants, along with their signature wicked characteristics, mysteries, and other engaging activities – all coming together in one of the most creative traveling exhibits to arrive at Heritage. Driven to Collect Exhibit Opening
Saturday, April 19 Automobile Gallery This year marks the return of Heritage’s permanent collection of antique and classic automobiles with a whole new look and interpretive theme, plus a carload of interactive fun! Discover how Heritage founder Josiah K. Lilly, III collected and restored American automobiles

– and learn about the passion and desire that compel people to seek out and collect objects they love. Driven to Collect will feature the finest cars in the Heritage collection, including a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster owned by Gary Cooper, a 1913 Ford Model T Touring car, a 1927 LaSalle Sport Phaeton, a 1915 Stutz Bearcat, a 1932 Auburn Boattail Speedster, and a 1909 White Steam Car Model M owned by President Taft. Hydrangea Pruning Demonstration
Saturday, April 26, 11 am-12 pm Meet at Ticket Office Even the most experienced gardeners get confused by the prospect of pruning hydrangeas. Join noted hydrangea expert Mal Condon to learn how to selectively prune your plants to improve vigor, increase bloom density, control height, and enhance ornamental value. Discuss the tools, techniques, and timing needed for effective pruning and see a hands-on demonstration of spring pruning methods for all species in the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society Garden at Heritage. A lifelong gardener, Condon and his wife created Hydrangea Farm Nursery on Nantucket, which has one of the largest hydrangea collections in the Northeastern US. Saturday, May 10, 11 am-12 pm Automobile Gallery Go behind the scenes with curator Jennifer Madden for a tour of Heritage’s antique auto collection in storage. Rhododendron Festival
Saturday, May 17 - Sunday, May 25, 10 am-5 pm Thousands of world-famous rhododendrons in over 100 varieties and an explosion of color cover 100 acres with spectacular blooms during this week-long event. Enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by walls of flowers, learn more about these gorgeous plants from horticultural experts, explore Heritage’s connection to noted rhododendron hybridizers Charles O. Dexter and Jack Cowles, and participate in other family activities related to this signature plant. Take a piece of Heritage’s rhododendron legacy home by purchasing a rhododendron at a special plant sale. Free with museum admission.
Rhododendron Festival Daily Walking Tour: Heritage’s Rhododendron Collection
Saturday, May 17 - Sunday, May 25 11-11:30 am and 2-2:30 pm Meet at the Parade Field Join Docent Tour Guides for a 30-minute walking tour of Heritage’s renowned rhododendron collection. Discover how the work done here by two hybridizers – Charles Dexter and Jack Cowles – contributed to the genus Rhododendron and created the plants we love today, and learn about current efforts to maintain this important collection. Guides will select the most spectacular spots for viewing these stunning plants daily. No advance registration required. Free with museum admission.

Behind the Scenes Greenhouse Tour
Sunday, May 18 Sunday, May 25 1-2 pm Go behind the scenes with Director of Horticulture Les Lutz for a tour of Heritage’s new greenhouse. Les will share facts about the structure, and explain why it was built and what it is used for. Participants will also learn how the building is being used to help save the Dexter and Cowles Rhododendron collection from extinction and what we are planning to do with the collections in the future. Learn about how plants for the Wicked Plants exhibit were started and grown in the greenhouse along with all of the annuals used in the gardens. Everything You Need to Know about Rhododendron Care Workshop
Tuesday, May 20, 1-2 pm; Sunday, May 25, 11 am-12 pm Director of Horticulture Les Lutz will demonstrate and discuss basic Rhododendron care and maintenance. Discussions and demonstrations include removing dead wood, pruning, fertilizing, bud-pinching, and dead-heading these beautiful plants. Other basics, such as the importance of watering and mulching, will be discussed as well. Advance registration is recommended as space is limited. Rhododendron Redux with Expert John Delano
Wednesday, May 21, 1-2 pm Go “off the beaten path” with rhododendron expert John Delano and Heritage Museums & Gardens’ Director of Horticulture Les Lutz. Learn more about Heritage’s outstanding collection of rhododendron hybrids and the history of rhododendrons at Heritage. Delano is a member of the American Rhododendron Society and has grown hundreds of outstanding rhododendrons both at Heritage and in his garden in Duxbury, MA. He has also done invaluable work at Heritage by cataloguing the Dexter and Cowles hybrids. No advance registration required.

Rhododendron Propagation Workshop
Friday, May 23 & Saturday, May 24, 1-2 pm, Heald Center Everyone wants more of these great plants, and Horticulture Director Les Lutz will demonstrate how easy it can be to propagate them. You’ll learn how and when to take cuttings and what rooting medium (soil) to use. After watching a demonstration, you can try your hand at practicing these techniques, and leave with knowledge to help you successfully propagate your own rhodies this fall. ArtWorks Exhibit
Saturday, May 24 - Sunday, June 1 Heald Center Heritage is partnering with The Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board to present the 2014 ArtWorks School to Career Partnership program. ArtWorks was started in 1997 to connect students with working artists across Cape Cod and the Islands. Forty students, juniors and seniors from Cape and Islands high schools, participate in an eight-week internship with area artists in disciplines including painting, photography, illustration, pottery, and graphic design. The experience culminates in an exhibit of artwork created by students and their mentors. The exhibit will travel from Heritage to the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Wellfleet Preservation Hall, and the State House in Boston. Free with museum admission.
David Rogers’ Big Bugs Exhibit Opening
Saturday, May 31 Throughout the Gardens What happens when you re-create the insects all around us on a gargantuan scale using all natural materials? You have Big Bugs. Sculptor David Rogers creates insects such as 25-foot-long ants and dragonflies with 17-foot wingspans using various combinations of whole trees, cut green saplings, dry branches, and other forest materials. All wood is found dead or harvested sustainably. The inherent uniqueness of these materials, their different shapes, colors and textures provide these sculptures with their character, definition and a
sense of motion. The effect is a role reversal of dimension and perception. “Insects play this vital role in a garden but are unnoticed, so I put them on such a large scale that you can’t help but notice them,” says Rogers. Big Bugs at Heritage includes three ants, a dragonfly and a damselfly, an assassin bug, a praying mantis, a spider on a web, a ladybug, and a daddy longlegs, all placed in interesting landscape settings throughout the grounds. Exhibit closes October 26. Free with museum admission.
Big Bugs Bash
Saturday, May 31, All-Day Event, Throughout the Gardens A day of insect-themed activities to celebrate the opening of David Rogers’ Big Bugs exhibit. Bug Tasting with David George Gordon, The Bug Chef: 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm. The nationally acclaimed author of The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook will offer cooking demonstrations and tastings of his recipes including, of course, bugs! Fee (includes museum admission): $20 Members, $35 Non-Members Meet the Artist: 10:30 am, 3 pm, 4 pm. Meet David Rogers, and learn how he created the sculptures in the exhibit. Crafty Critters: 10 am-2 pm. Make your own interesting insects to take home. Insect Exploration: 10 am-6 pm. Learn how insects use camouflage to survive and thrive, see insectivorous plants in action, discover mounted displays of bugs that live at Heritage, and more as you explore an insect theme through various activities in Hidden Hollow. Bug Ball: 12 pm-4 pm. Create a bug mask, use costume elements and puppets, mimic insect moves, and join the dance party on the Hidden Hollow stage. Insect Safari: 10 am-6 pm. Visitors will be challenged to visit each of the ten sculptures and will learn fun facts about the insects depicted at each.

Under the Hood: The World of Auto Auctions
Monday, June 16, 6-7:30 pm Heald Center Join Wayne Carini, John Kraman, and Bill Stephens for a fascinating look into the world of collector car auctions. Carini is a master 17
automobile restorer, owner and operator of three specialty restoration shops, and the star of the Velocity Network’s program Chasing Classic Cars. Kraman is Consignment Director for renowned Illinois-based Mecum Car Auctions, Inc., a company known for hosting over two dozen events nationally that attract thousands of sports, classic, vintage, racing, muscle, and collector cars to auction. Stephens is a motorsports television commentator and author, and an award-winning producer of automotive television. Learn how this business became the multibillion dollar industry it is today and about the nuts and bolts of how these auctions work. Panelists will provide tips for anyone thinking of consigning a car and share riveting insider stories. Heritage Annual Auto Show
Saturday, June 21, Rain date: Sunday, June 22 10 am-2 pm, Parade Field This all-inclusive event highlights antique and classic automobiles, hot rods and custom cars in excellent original or restored condition. All body styles are invited. Registered vehicles will compete for four awards determined by popular voting. Decision about moving to the rain date will be made by 5:30 am on June 21. Free with museum admission. Auto Show Youth Judging Program As part of the Auto Show, Heritage is pleased to include the Hagerty Operation Ignite! Connecting Kids and Cars Youth Judging Program at this year’s event. We invite 15 enthusiasts ages 8 to 14 years to take part. These young judges will be provided official Youth Judging gear and will be led through the show field by an adult guide. They will have the opportunity to get up close to select classic cars and meet owners to gain first-hand knowledge and learn the basics of judging. Youth judges will award one vehicle with a “Youth Pick” Award at the award ceremony at 1:30. 18

Wicked Plants Talk and Tour
With Author Amy Stewart Sunday, June 22, 2-4 pm Heald Center In her New York Times bestseller Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln’s Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities, Amy Stewart takes on Mother Nature’s most appalling creations. It’s an A to Z of plants that kill, maim, intoxicate, and otherwise offend, and was the inspiration for the Wicked Plants special exhibit currently on view in the Special Exhibitions Gallery. During this engaging program, Stewart draws on history, medicine, science, and legend to present tales of bloodcurdling botany that will entertain, alarm, and enlighten even the most intrepid gardeners and nature lovers. Her talk is illustrated by dazzling photographs, historical images, copper engravings, and other visuals. Following this presentation, join Stewart and Les Lutz, Heritage’s Director of Horticulture, for more fun on a walking tour of over a dozen different diabolical botanicals that creep through Heritage’s gardens. What Makes Shakespeare Great?
Joseph Luzzi / Bard College Where would we be without Shakespeare? The romantic love of the “star-crossed” Romeo and Juliet, the Oedipal complex of the eternally indecisive Hamlet, the “vaulting ambition” of the tortured Macbeth... all of these characters and so many more are an integral part of our collective memories. This presentation will reflect on what makes Shakespeare so “great” by bringing 24
us inside the source of his genius: his unparalleled mastery of poetic and dramatic expression. We will explore Shakespeare’s brilliant use of metaphor, dialogue, and especially his psychologically complex characters. We will also learn about the theatrical world in Shakespeare’s day, as we consider such issues as his relation to his actors, the printing world, even the idea of “authorship” in his time. Above all, our focus will be on the true evidence of Shakespeare’s greatness and discovery of why, in Shakespeare’s own words, “the play’s the thing.”
What Makes Mozart Great?
Craig Wright / Yale University What is it in Mozart’s music that makes it among the most sublime ever written? Using music and video clips from operas and films, we will explore the enormous diversity of Mozart’s music. At the same time, by examining color photographs of his autographed manuscripts and draft sketches, we will witness Mozart’s attention to the smallest detail. By the end of this session, we will come to see that not only is Mozart’s music great, but Mozart himself was unique, and arguably the most extraordinary creator ever to set foot on this planet.

Jennifer Lawless / American University The 2012 elections were as much a victory for many pollsters as for Barack Obama. Nate Silver – among others – managed to predict with precision and accuracy the outcome of the presidential election in all 50 states, and the results of U.S. Senate races in nearly all cases. Given the limitations of polling and public opinion data, the pollsters’ success was remarkable. After all, more people can name the judge who presided over the O.J. Simpson case than the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. More women and men know the color of Monica Lewinsky’s infamous dress than the statute that conferred investigative power on Kenneth Starr. Yet Americans are polled – on a daily basis – about their attitudes regarding the fiscal cliff, marriage equality and reproductive rights, and – already – candidates likely to seek office in the 2014 midterm elections.

Friday - Sunday, November 28-30, December 5-7; 12-14; 19-21; 26-28 4:30-8:30 pm, Throughout the gardens Join us for this annual celebration of lights, which has become a holiday tradition for many. Featuring music and dance performances at 6:30 in the Automobile Gallery. St. Nick will hold court in the Model T. Gingerbread houses created by local companies and students will be on display. Kids can create a holiday craft and explore Hidden Hollow by moonlight. Take a spin (or two) on the vintage carousel, and roast marshmallows together at the fire pits while holiday tunes play. Stroll the gardens with family and friends, and enjoy Heritage in a whole new light.
