Replacement Index Backround The aim of this list is to provide Irish Suckler farmers, both pedigree and commercial, with a complete list of all AI Sires being marketed in Ireland, that are either 4 or 5 stars, across breed, on the Replacement Index.

Calving Difficulty
Usage Advice
This is the overall single figure profit index that each bull has. A Bull with a Replacement Index of €200 is expected to sire daughters that are €200 more profitable than the average Irish suckler cow.
This is the expected percentage of difficult calvings that a bull will bring.
If a bull’s ‘reliability %’ for the ‘Replacement Index’ is under 85% then it is advised that he is used in a ‘Team’, alongside as many other AI Sires as possible. A team of 5 bulls, if possible, is recommended. This is because the maternal abilities of daughters of such bulls is not yet fully known and so it would be risky to just use semen from one of these bulls. ‘Proven’ identifies a bull with a reliability % over 85% which could be used on his own.

Top Replacement Index
The Replacement Index ICBF publishes the €uro-Star evaluations for beef cattle in Ireland. The €uro-Stars are the end result of a series of routine steps otherwise known as a ‘Genetic Evaluation Run’. A genetic evaluation run will identify all of the progeny & relatives of a Bull and compare their performance records to those of their herdmates. It then applies the economic values to this data, as some traits are more valuable than others e.g. ‘Milk’ is a more valuable trait than ‘Coat Colour’. A breeding ‘Index’ groups these traits together, depending on their importance for achieving an overall goal. So for example, the goal of the ‘Replacement Index’ is to identify a bull whose daughters will turn into excellent suckler cows with good milk, fertility, calving ability and moderate maintenance costs. However, a large proportion of his own offspring as well as the offspring of his daughters will go for fattening and finishing. Therefore this index also includes beef traits such as ‘Carcass Weight’ & ‘Feed Intake’. As it is also desired that a bull’s calves would be born alive without difficulty and would be quiet and easy to manage. ‘Calving Difficulty’ and ‘Docility’ are also built into this index.

Reliability % is an indication as to how confident ICBF can be about the genetic index for a particular animal. Lots of progeny performance recorded (weighed etc) alongside lots of other animals, across large numbers of herds is what increases a Animal's reliability % figure.

The ICBF ‘Bull Search’ facility on the ICBF website (www.icbf.com) is where you can find out the most up-to-date €uro-Stars of any AI Bull, Stockbull or Young Bull that you are thinking of buying. The indexes for each bull on this list are from the August 2015 evaluation run. However, indexes are updated three times per year; April, August and December. New calves, weights and carcasses etc. could come into a Bull’s indexes at each of these evaluation updates, potentially causing his €uro-Star figures to change. It is, therefore, important that you check the online bull search at www.icbf.com to see the most up to date index for a bull.
Step 2 Go to the ‘Bull Search’ and enter the tag number or AI Code of any pedigree bull and click ‘search’. That animal’s most up-to-date €uro-Star figures will then be shown.
