SENIOR TIMES NEWS

Senior Times

While many folks are thinking of relaxing and vacationing, we here at the Orange County Department on Aging keep moving “full steam ahead.” Summer is a great time for us to launch new projects with the help of summer interns from UNC-CH. We are moving toward the end of Year Two of the Master Aging Plan and we have been busy. With this issue of Senior Times we are unveiling our new department logo, a redesigned website, and our Facebook page. We are very excited about all three of these projects, but are especially excited about our new logo. This is the first time our department has had its own logo and our motto, “Endless Possibilities,” really captures the essence of our department’s work. We are all on an aging journey, and each of us must find our own unique way. This brings me to an update on our Aging in Community series. As we have found through our community conversations, every person has a different idea on where they want to live as they age. Our 6-part series brought over 100 persons together on a monthly basis. In March we had a Developers Breakfast to bring entrepreneurs and planners together so that they can start working to make some of these alternative housing options a reality. We are a long way from starting to build, but at least we are all talking and planning for the future. Plans are also underway for the “In the Spirit of Healthy Aging” workshop (see page 11) to bring faith based organizations together with our department to build on the strengths of each of organization in serving our senior community. And finally, our Project EngAGE senior leaders have officially graduated and are out in the community building relationships and starting new partnerships. If you are interested in being a part of the next Project EngAGE class, please drop me an email. As always I love hearing from you and seeing you at the Senior Centers. And don’t forget to follow us on our new Facebook page!

Do You Fit Your Car, or Does Your CARFIT You? CarFit is an educational program created by the American Society on Aging, and developed in collaboration with AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). The goals of the communitybased program are three-fold: 1) Help drivers improve the “fit” of their vehicles for safety and comfort. 2) Promote conversations about driving safety and the continued need for mobility options to keep people participating in the life of their communities. 3) Link adults with relevant, local resources that can help ensure they drive safely longer. CarFit uses a trained team, including occupational therapy practitioners, to assist drivers with items such as: determining a clear line of sight over the steering wheel, maintaining adequate space between the front air bag and steering wheel, determining proper seat belt fit and use, and maximizing mirror positions. All attendees must call the Seymour Center to register for a specific time to come for the session. Durable Medical Equipment Update

We routinely exchange more than 20 pieces of equipment each month, many of which go out to people who need them only temporarily or would otherwise have a difficult time affording them. At this time our storage unit is full and we do not need bedside commodes or walkers. We can always use tub seats, wheelchairs and rollators (4-wheeled walkers). If you have items you’d like to donate, please bring them to either senior center. You may request to receive a form acknowledging your donation. Thank you!

A volunteer with experience completing grant applications is needed as the Friends apply for various grants throughout the year. If interested, please contact Katherine Leith, President, at 919-929-9808. Friends of the Seymour Center Website: www.friendsseymourcenter.org

How Changes in the Voting Law May Affect You.

There are a lot of changes going into effect with the passage of the Voter Information and Verification Act (VIVA). Many of these changes involve ease of access to vote. In order to vote before the general election, you need to register or re-register (if you’ve changed mailing address, name, etc.) to vote 25 days before the election. In 2014, that means registering to vote by Oct 10. You may no longer register during early voting as a result of VIVA’s passage. However, it has now become easier to request an absentee ballot. You may do that be contacting the Orange County Board of Elections at 919-245-2350 or visiting www.co.orange.nc.us/elect to request an absentee ballot form. After they have received your request, the Board of Elections will send you an absentee ballot. Once you’ve voted absentee you must return the ballot signed, sealed and witnessed or notarized. These ballots may be requested up to 7 days prior to each election and postmarked by Election Day, Nov 4, 2014.

SENIOR TIMES NEWS & AGING TRANSITIONS

Additionally, you will not be able to vote a straight party ticket for the Democratic, Republican, or Libertarian candidates. You will need to vote individually for each candidate on the ballot, including the local and statewide judicial candidates running in non-partisan elections. The sample ballots available at your polling place may be taken into the voting booth to help guide you through this process. Finally, after early voting the only way to ensure your vote is counted is to vote at your assigned polling place (precinct) on Election Day. There is another important Election Day change here as well. If you go to another polling place you will not be allowed to vote even on a provisional basis. To find your precinct (assigned polling location), you may look up your address at www.ncsbe.gov/webapps/pollingplace_search/

Special note: Voter ID’s will not be required in order to vote until January 2016. Nonetheless, you will be asked if you own one of the acceptable forms of identification as part of an effort to help eligible voters receive the proper identification credentials. Flyers with information about the acceptable forms of Voter Identification, and how to obtain them if necessary, can be found at the Seymour and Central Orange Senior Centers. For more information on registration and voting, contact Orange County Board of Elections at 919-245-2350 or visiting www.co.orange.nc.us/elect.

AGING IN COMMUNITY: PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE The successful Aging in Community: Planning for our Future series will take a break over the summer to bring interest groups together to “dive deeper” into some of the housing options discussed this past year. A facilitated discussion is planned on May 31st with persons seriously interested in the further development of shared and cohousing (including pocket neighborhoods and senior artist colonies) or retrofitting existing neighborhoods (including Aging in Place “village” groups). If you are interested in joining this discussion, please contact Cherie Rosemond as soon as possible at crosemon@med.unc.edu or by calling the Aging Helpline at 919-968-2087. Since we want to keep the groups small and interactive, participant numbers will be limited.

Don’t worry if this event is not convenient or if you are not ready to dig deeper into a particular housing option. Later in the summer, be on the lookout for announcements about an “Aging in Community” picnic. This will be another opportunity to continue to learn together, hear about recent plans, and explore new ideas. Seymour Center Sat. May 31

Stay Up and Active Nearly 1,000 older adults in Orange County call EMS each year after a fall. Stay Up and Active is a new initiative between the Orange County Departments on Aging and Emergency Management Services (EMS), with support from the UNC Geriatric Education Center, the UNC Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. This innovative program seeks to connect older adults to the services and resources they need to safely age in place due to falls or the risk of falls. Older adults who call EMS due to a fall, or are determined to be at high risk of falling, can receive a follow-up screening by EMS supervisors and be referred for evaluation and services through the Department on Aging. These services may include home safety education, home modifications, counseling, referral for primary or specialized health care, in-home services or other resource referrals. For more information about this program or to schedule a falls risk screening, contact Kim Woodward, Operations Director at Emergency Services (919-245-6133) or Mary Fraser, Aging Transitions Administrator the Department on Aging (919-968-2087).

Project EngAGE We are honored to introduce the inaugural, 2014 Project EngAGE graduating class of Senior Leaders! Please join us in congratulating Gail Alberti, Bill Barrows, Barbara Breeze, Jaki Shelton Green, Sue Heckman, Cliff Leath, Dee Lowdermilk, Rod Magson, Lenore Martin, Betty Melanson, Yvonne Mendenhall, Delores Ramsey, Donna Scandlin, Tana Hartman Thorn, and Norma White.

Project EngAGE is an interactive senior leadership program that seeks to meet the growing needs of Orange County’s older adults by tapping into their existing talents and skills. The program’s mission and overarching goal is to engage and enable older adults in Orange County to serve as community resource leaders and to make our community an ideal place to age well. Through an innovative, experiential learning program, consisting of 12, five-hour weekly sessions, Project EngAGE focuses on relationship building between participants, and with local leaders, visits to local organizations and agencies, and learning from relevant guest speakers. Each session focuses on a different topic, ranging from wellness, mental health & aging, to emergency preparedness, community engagement, and leadership skills. The ultimate goal of Project EngAGE is for senior leaders to form self-directed Senior Resource Teams, and to return to their communities, equipped and motivated to fill resource gaps with their own unique projects.

In April, OCDOA held a graduation ceremony at the Central Orange Senior Center, honoring these 15 Orange County leaders from Bingham, New Hope, Eno, Cedar Grove, Little River, Cheeks, Schley, and Chapel Hill. We commend the inaugural Project EngAGE class for their strong leadership, hard work, and passion for their Orange County communities, and look forward to supporting them in their next steps.

We are getting ready to launch the next Project EngAGE class – stay tuned for details! To nominate a Senior Leader for the next Project EngAGE cohort, or to learn more, please contact: Janice I. Tyler Director, Orange County Department on Aging 919-245-4255 jtyler@orangecountync.gov

Giving a Little - Adds a Lot

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Opportunities

By RSVP Volunteer Annette Jurgelski Davis Waters wanted to do more in retirement than sit at home watching TV. “I was looking for an activity to fill my time,” he says, “and I knew that I wanted to be in a school environment.” He contacted the Orange County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program for assistance with a volunteer match.

morning at the media center, he sits down individually with these students to practice their reading skills. Sandra Lindley, the school literacy coach, says that the students Davis works with really look forward to these visits from the soft-spoken, white-haired man with the kindly smile.

Davis’ goal was quickly realized at Cameron Park Elementary School, which needed help in the media center. For several years, he has been reporting to the media center every Tues and Thurs to help with the numerous tasks inherent in running a library. Much of his time is spent shelving books and helping youngsters select appropriate reading materials. “Students tend to select books by eyecatching covers,” he notes, “and the selection may be beyond their reading level.”

A native of the Carolinas, Davis was born in SC and educated in NC. He earned a bachelor’s degree from UNC Charlotte and a master’s degree from Wake Forest University. His studies focused on history, and his professional career utilized this training. For 33 years, he worked for the Division of Archives and History, NC Department of Cultural Resources. His first job was with the NC Museum of History, where he ran the Tar Heel Junior Historian program. Other job assignments have sent him to Historic Edenton and to Carter’s Grove Plantation at Colonial Williamsburg. In the years before his retirement in 2005, he was site manager for Bennett Place,

Through the RSVP, Davis has also become a “Reading Partner” with two second-graders at Cameron Park. Before beginning his

Since retiring, Davis has enjoyed reading, writing a book, solving word puzzles and travelling with his wife. These activities and a wood carving class at Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough have made his life pleasant, while the time he spends volunteering has added meaning and purpose. “Volunteering means giving a little bit of myself to help others,” he says. “I think it’s important for seniors to mentor the younger generation and to give them guidance. I hope that my interactions with the kids have helped them realize that adults are interested in what they are doing.” Both Lindley and school librarian Michele Hughes have high

Budget cuts have eliminated some school support staff and increased the need for help to preserve vital programs. Consider adding a new dimension to your life. Back to School Volunteers

A new special column on volunteering in the schools, presented by the RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program

Find out how you can go “back to school” as a volunteer and help improve reading or math skills. This is an excellent opportunity for older adults to bridge the generation gap by partnering with students as a Senior Education Corps (SEC) volunteer. SEC volunteers are interviewed and matched with a volunteer opportunity with pre-K to college level students in a traditional or year ‘round calendar. Literacy volunteers receive free training and resources.

• Both school districts seek Reading Partners K-2nd grade and reading tutors for other grades, 1 - 2 times weekly. Free training. • For new and returning RSVP volunteers going to an Orange County School (OCS), September 9 training 9 am - 2 pm will be led by OCS Literacy Specialists to include tips and hands-on activities. They will also learn the why’s and how’s of assessment tools. Lunch will be provided for those who pre-register

• For new Chapel Hill-Carrboro School volunteers, training will be in late September for Reading Partners and English as a Second Language (ESL) volunteers • After school settings 1-2 times weekly

• Join a volunteer on-call team to help college and GED students challenged with math courses required for graduation. Durham Tech - Orange Co campus in Hillsborough

• Blue Ribbon Mentors are needed to get involved with helping a student tap their potential for growth from academics to leadership, focusing on 8th graders through high school graduation. 2 hours weekly for 2 years. Fall training 2014 SEC is an intergenerational partnership linking the talents and experiences of older adults with the curiosity and energy of children of all ages. Its members serve in the educational arena from tutoring, storytelling, helping teachers or school libraries with special projects to sharing a cultural event. RSVP Event to Honor Volunteers

Save the date! Orange County’s RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program’s 40th Volunteer Recognition Celebration will be held Thurs, June 5 from 6 - 9 pm at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill. Details were sent by invitation to RSVP Volunteers. If you have not sent your response card but plan to attend, please call the RSVP office 919-245-4240 on or before May 19.

The light in their eyes provides a glimpse into why many Orange County’s 55+ residents have worked so hard as volunteers over the years – and continue to do so. As one of the first RSVP Volunteer Programs initiated in NC in 1973, RSVP began with 14 volunteers and six local nonprofit agencies. This year we will honor over 450 RSVP volunteers, age 55 and older, who served more than 70 different organizations. Several volunteers will receive honorable mention based on their service years or for reaching a milestone of RSVP lifetime hours.

Annually, Orange County RSVP volunteers contribute approximately 45,000 service hours with a value of $946,800 to the community (the current NC value is $21.04 per volunteer hour as determined by the 2013 Independent Sector).

The event is FREE for invited RSVP volunteers and $15 to bring a guest. Questions? Call 919-245-4240.

Needed! Friend to Friend Volunteers! Please consider spending one hour a week with an older adult who lives alone and would enjoy receiving a visitor at home, or getting out for a brief outing, or help with light errands. If interested, please contact the RSVP office at 919-245-4241.

LINE DANCING for HEALTHY BENEFITS

WELLNESS OPPORTUNITIES

By RSVP Volunteer Annette Jurgelski Line Dancing, one of the most popular activities at the Senior Centers, has a long history. It is closely allied to folk dancing, which was practiced in Europe before America was discovered. A distinguishing feature is that line dancing requires no partner – which has brought to the dance floor many who would otherwise be sitting on the sidelines.

fun and exercise to up to 40 participants each week

While line dancers do not usually touch each other, their movements are highly synchronized. Everyone moves to the same beat. Country music originally provided the beat, but since the 1970’s many popular music styles, including pop, swing, rock and roll, disco, and Latin, have been incorporated into the line dancers’ repertoire.

In Hillsborough, line dancing was formerly offered by Orange County’s Recreation Department before the Central Orange Senior Center was established. Today’s three instructors are all veterans of Recreation Department. classes. Esther Booker and Patsy Wilson collaborate on a Thursday morning class; Becky Walker teaches classes on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, as well as a beginner’s class on Wednesday evenings.

A lot of seniors choose to line dance. The Central Orange Senior Center offers three weekly toe tapping, hip swinging sessions and the Seymour Center offers one. With an average enrollment of 8 to 20, these groups are providing

Why do line dancers choose this route to fitness? “Need the exercise,” is a repeatedly cited motivation, but there are other incentives as well. “I like the music,” says one dancer. “We get to socialize,” says another. A third cites the benefits to the brain of memorizing each dance’s steps.

Bruce Gillooly, the dance instructor at the Seymour Center, started stepping to music at age

seven, when his mother enrolled him in a class where he learned tap and ballet. Liking the combination of music and motion, he maintained an interest in dance through the twelfth grade, developing skill in line dancing along with other dances. After retiring from a 31-year career with IBM, he decided to teach dancing as a second career. His line dancing class is held at Seymour on Monday afternoons. Both Becky and Bruce are volunteers with the Orange County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program. All four instructors are convinced that line dancing benefits physical health. The movement is good for the muscles and joints, they say, and improves balance. Simultaneously, the fast pace exercises the heart, while learning new steps challenges the brain. As for mental health, they agree that line dancing is above all fun. “People who participate love it;” Gillooly says. “It makes them happy; it improves their lives.”

Music can awaken deep emotions, even in people with advanced dementia. This is why there is Music in my Mind. Orange County is working to bring the gift of personalized music to individuals who need it most, through partnerships with long-term care facilities, home care companies, and private caregivers. Become a part of this effort by donating a new or gently-used iPod or making a financial donation for the purchase of an iTunes gift card. Or, give your time by becoming a volunteer – helping indi-

viduals with dementia and their caregivers develop personalized playlists and experience renewed life. In the coming months, Music in my Mind will be assisting several long term care facilities in the county to begin creating personalized music programs for their residents. Now is a wonderful time to become part of this project. Please consider a donation of time, money, or an iPod. Our goal is to obtain at least 100 iPods and headphones to be used in facilities and with caregivers giving care in their

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design. TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation. Its agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation. Everything they do -- from their TED Talks videos to the projects sparked by the TED Prize, from the global TEDx community to the TED-Ed lesson series -- is driven by this goal: How can we best spread great ideas? TED aims to provide a platform for thinkers, visionaries and teachers, so that people around the globe can gain a better understanding of the biggest issues faced by the world, and feed a desire to help create a better future. Core to this goal is a belief that there is no greater force for changing the world than a powerful idea. Topics are created and made available for use by TED. Join us as we dive into TED Talks this summer at Seymour including 15 minute video/talk and follow up discussions led by Emily Gordon.

Within this generation, an extra 30 years have been added to our life expectancy---and these years aren’t just a footnote or a pathology. In this talk, Jane Fonda asks how we can think about the new phase of our lives. (Filmed at TEDxWomen.) Charron Andrews and Friends: Piecing Together a Story Piecing Together a Story will be on display Aug 18 - Oct 16. This unique exhibit will feature quilts, collage and bricolage. Susan Powell, Molly Cassidy and Charron Andrews use different mediums and approaches to tell a story or to inspire a story from the viewer. Susan Powell has a lifelong connection to art. She has experimented with different mediums but once she discovered quilting she was hooked. Her quilts are inspired by the texture, color, form and shape of pattern in the fabric depicting still lives, city scenes, buildings and windows. She takes great pleasure in teaching quilting to students of all levels. Molly Cassidy is a mixed-media conceptual artist inspired by the written word using calligraphy and visual representation of the meaning behind the words. Though she uses most media, the texture that papers afford is a big draw. Everything from printed napkins to silk screened Japanese papers has made their way into her work. Charron Andrews creates pieces of art using bits and pieces of discarded materials that have outlived their intended purpose and to which she has very little sentimental attachment. Inspired by the story these things tell both from their past and from their new role in a piece of art, she creates intriguing visual stories. Art Opening Hostesses will be: Beth Haberstroth, Joan Walshaw and Margaret Mays. Live jazz entertainment with Marie Vanderbeck and Friends. Seymour Center Mon, Aug 18 (353003-03) 5:30 - 7 pm

Zentangle® Comes to the Seymour Center Zentangle® is a method of creating beautiful images from structured patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing, increases focus and creativity, and provides an increased sense of personal well-being. Anyone can create a Zentangle. Even if you have never drawn a line, you can pick up a pen and make a beautiful piece the very first time. People who are sure they are not “creative, artistic, or talented” are always delighted and surprised to see what they can create. Sharon Lynn Payne, a Certified Zentangle Teacher will teach the basic techniques and guide you through this meditative process. During the workshop, participants learn the philosophy behind the Zentangle® method, take the first steps in creating art and learn four structured patterns called “tangles” to complete a Zentangle “tile.” Beginner shading techniques are practiced to make the Zentangle tile come alive or “pop”. You will leave with a beautiful piece of art. The Zentangle® art form and method was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and is copyrighted. Zentangle® is a registered trademark of Zentangle, Inc. Learn more at www.zentangle.com. Official Zentangle products available for purchase before, during and after the event. Tar Heel Depression Glass Club The Tar Heel Depression Glass Club was formed in the spring of 1984. The group shares a common interest in collecting and preserving the glassware of the American Depression era. Past programs have included talks on Heisey, Fostoria, and Cambridge; Jewel Tea, Mayfair, Fiesta, Hall teapots, Cloverleaf, and Fire-King jade-ite. Other times, however, the program will be about something related to the interest of a club member that is not specifically related to collectible glass or dinnerware. Some examples of these programs have been talks on cast iron, children’s toys from the 1940s and 1950s, glass paperweights, Guardian cookware, and antique purses. Among the activities enjoyed by members are monthly meetings, social outings and trips to glass manufacturing areas of the country (West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania). This is an open group and new members are always welcome. As delightful as that might have been then (or now), this summer we will be looking at Twain’s near-perfect masterpiece through our adult eyes, seeing what works, what fails, what troubles us, and perhaps most of all - what do we see in it now that we didn’t then? In addition to Tom Sawyer, over the next three months we will be reading lesser Twain’s known and equally instructive and delightful shorter works (stories/ essays/sketches/excerpts) including but not limited to My Platonic Sweetheart (posthumously published), Eve’s Diary, A Curious Dream and The Awful German Language.
