Thank you for being our partner in reaching out to East Central Illinois children for over 50 years. From 1957 to 2010, Junior Achievement of East Central Illinois has been impacting students about work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. In 2008- Jill Applebee 2009, over 500 caring JA volunteers dedicated their time, energy, and resources to help change the lives of young people through Junior

Achievement in 13 communities. Together, we were able to impact 9,000 students with innovative lessons about the relevance of their education outside the classroom. All the accomplishments and successes that Junior Achievement celebrates happen because of our investors, volunteers, board members, educators, and special event participants. Our success is attributed to

the caring adults who share their experiences and resources with the students. On behalf of Junior Achievement of East Central Illinois Board of Directors, staff and over 9,000 JA Students, please accept our sincere gratitude for making the mission of Junior Achievement a reality. With sincere thanks,

Jill Applebee President Junior Achievement of East Central Illinois

A Message From the Board Chair With the pervasive news coverage of America’s financial turmoil, our children may have questions about what is going on in our economy. Many Julie Moore adults have a difficult time understanding—much less explaining in an age-appropriate way to a child— what is going on in our government and in our financial markets. America can, and must, do a better job of educating our kids about effective money management, not only so they can avoid the financial pitfalls into which so many adults have fallen, but because our kids will someday run our businesses, our government, and our financial institutions. How can young people get the financial knowledge that they so desperately need? Fortunately, there are organizations who are answering the call to educate the next generation of consumers about how to effectively

manage their money. Junior Achievement is one such organization, working closely with the business and education communities to deliver programs that teach K-12 students age-appropriate, hands-on lessons about how to be financially literate. After participating in Junior Achievement programs, students see the important connections between education, career, salary and desired lifestyle. I encourage businesses to support organizations such as Junior Achievement, which currently reaches more than four million K-12 students in the United States annually. In the 20082009 school year Junior Achievement of East Central Illinois reached 8,930 children. It is critical for our young people to learn effective money management so that American communities, and our economy, remain robust.

Sincerely,

Julie Moore Director, Community and Government Relations, Decatur Memorial Hospital Junior Achievement Board Chair

Different…if there is one word I can use to describe myself it would be daring. With being different you allow yourself to try new things and you don’t compare yourself to others or your parents. Music has always played an intricate part of my life when I was young and in church, but now that I am in high school music inspires me on a daily basis. I also play in Decatur Youth Symphony Orchestra. At school I am the student council president which puts me in charge of many of the events planned through out the year. In the future I plan to pursue either a nursing degree and become a certified registered nurse, anesthetist, or a surgeon. Next year I hope to attend either Loyola University in Chicago or Bradley University in Peoria.

I am 17 years old and attend MacArthur High School. On April 29, 2009 I attended the Young Entrepreneurs Conference at Chicago. After the three-day competitions we won third place. With the hard work of the business team and four great mentors and teachers - Connie Beck, Marry Little, Keturah Owens, and Vickie Miller - we successfully won $150 start-up cost. At the time I was the lead design artist of the business, but thanks to the former president of Prime Visions, William Hodd, I have been made and am currently the President of Prime Visions. These were great experiences for me in my life time so far and I believe that my past experience and achievement will help me succeed in life and help me meet new friends.

I am a junior at MacArthur High School. In school I am an active participant in our athletic training program. I have a 3.9 GPA and plan to go to college. Although I am undecided on where I am going to college, I do know that I am majoring in nursing. After school I attend church on a regular basis. I attend Life Changers church in Decatur. Although I am very busy I am very family oriented. Being the middle child in a family of five I take on many responsibilities. I’m able to be both the older sibling and the younger sibling. In my spare time, I love reading, dancing, and singing. In the future, I plan to become a nurse in a prestigious hospital.

Shaneice Johnson I’m a 17-year-old senior at MacArthur High School. I am very involved in school and community activities. I am vice president of my school and a nursery teacher at my church. I try to help any and everyone however I can. I was always taught to pursue my dreams and to explore all the possibilities life has to offer. I try to keep myself well rounded in a sense by dibbling and dabbling in all areas of extra-curricular activities. I view Junior Achievement as another opportunity to explore my talents and better myself by taking advantage of the opportunities life set before us everyday.

Shaquille Perkins-Bailey I’m 17 and I attend MacArthur High School. I sing and play the drums, and I also play sports at MacArthur. I’m on the football and wrestling teams. I have a wonderful mother, brother and sister. I have volunteered at Decatur Memorial Hospital for two years and also Dove, Inc. I’m a leader of the Jr. Masons of Decatur. I am also the vice president of my school’s business club, Prime Visions. I plan to leave here and attend Mac Murray College, where I want to major in business and marketing, with a minor of sports management.

Pierre Harris I’m from Cahokia, Ill., and am 17-year-old senior. I plan on going to Southeast Missouri State. I want to go to college not because I love wrestling and want to be an interior designer, but because growing up I lived with my four brothers and my mom. No help from anyone we struggled to make it, but my mom was a strong woman who helped us, so I want to be the first man in my family to go to college and make my mom proud. I love boxing, wrestling and reading in my free time. I am currently a varsity wrestler and boxer. I want to succeed in life to prove that I’m more than just a black kid looking for a way out. I want to be somebody. I’m Pierre Carday Harris!

My Involvement with Junior Achievement

I first became associated with Junior Achievement upon my arrival to Mount Zion High School in the summer of 2005. My principal, Greg Bradley (a Junior Achievement board member at the time) informed me that the Junior Achievement program “Success Skills” was to be incorporated into my Consumer Education curriculum and that Dr. Warren Jesek of Jesek and Griffin Family Dental Care was the consultant that I would be working with in implementing this program into my classroom. Fortunately, Dr. Jesek had been serving as a consultant for Junior Achievement prior to my arrival and was gracious enough to educate me about what types of things he would be doing in my classroom when teaching the “Success Skills” program. I have enjoyed my association with Junior Achievement during the past five years. I have been fortunate to work with an energetic consultant in Dr. Jesek as he supplements my Consumer Education curriculum brilliantly. When teaching the

“Success Skills” program to my class, Dr. Jesek educates the students about an array of topics ranging from effective communication skills to the traits that it takes for students to be successful through implementing the book entitled “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey. Furthermore, in being a successful businessman for the past 30 years, Dr. Jesek also educates the students about the job search process through having them complete a typed resume, cover letter, and a mock interview with him so that they can become better aware about what types of questions may be asked of them when applying for a job in the future.

The personnel employed at

Junior Achievement have

been very accommodating

when it comes to providing

resources to my classroom.

THANK YOU TO:

Regardless of the topic that he is instructing to the students on a given day, Dr. Jesek teaches with a passion matched by few. He has no problem keeping the students engaged in the material he is covering and the students enjoy seeing him weekly. However, Dr. Jesek’s contribution to my classroom is not limited to his weekly visits, as he has taken time out of his busy schedule in the past to help students interested in the medical field gain valuable job shadowing experience. I look forward to my continued association with the Junior Achievement program and my consultant, Dr. Warren Jesek. The personnel employed at Junior Achievement have been very accommodating when it comes to providing resources to my classroom. Those resources, along with Dr. Jesek’s knowledge and passion have provided my students with an educational experience that supplements my curriculum greatly.
