senior Gaige Francis. “With the type of motion we run offensively, we really can interchange our fullbacks and tight ends,” Saccoccia said. “All these guys need to know how to play inside and outside of the box, so they have a lot to learn.” A host of players are working to earn time at receiver. In the mix are senior Nasari Jackson, junior Niko Suriano, junior Brenten Jones, senior Andrew Gresko, sophomore Hakim Edwards, sophomore Ivan Buggs, sophomore Ty Pierce, senior Jared Roberts, sophomore Gavin Bozica, sophomore Micah Mitchell and junior Andrew Snyder. Listed as potential kickers are senior Mike Rook and sophomore Austyn Roberts. “Offensively, our biggest challenge right now is to develop depth,” Saccoccia said. “That’s definitely our No. 1 goal during summer camp. We need depth at just about every position.” McCartney, who started at defensive end in 2019, will move to the nose guard spot this season.

Vying for action along the defensive front are Ostovich, Fleming, Dorian Thorn, Sutton, Cian Montgomery, Harris, Brooks, Mamula, Marshall and Huff. Kinney was a regular at linebacker in 2019. Looking to join him there are Hopkins, James, McShan, Bozica, Harris, senior Hunter Stoddard, Caden Montgomery and Wade. Jackson returns to the Big Red secondary, as does Ferguson. Others looking for action there are Suriano, Jones, Gresko, Edwards, Smith, Buggs, Pierce, Sims, Boffman, J. Roberts, McShay, Mitchell, Snyder and junior Chris Schiappa. “We’ll use the same scheme defensively,” Saccoccia said. “We have six starters back when you add in Jackson, who was hurt most of last year. Defensively, we feel like we can pick it up a notch this year.” The tradition-laden Big Red, which owns four state championships, five runner-ups and 18 regional championships since 1984, was scheduled to See BIG RED Page 63

Sisinni: No doubt our strength is up front By RALPH COX Sports correspondent

We Have You Covered

WEIRTON — Becoming a head coach for the first time is daunting enough, but Weir High’s new mentor, Frank Sisinni, also has to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. His Red Riders, however, should still do well in the upcoming football wars. Sisinni greeted 41 players when summer camp began, and a dozen of them are seasoned veterans of the 6-4 team that just missed making the West Virginia playoffs for the eighth year in a row under Tony Filberto, who retired following the season. “There is no doubt our strength is up front,” Sisinni said. “We have several starters, and all are lettermen there. A key guy in that front will be fourth-year starter Jordan Brueck. He got all-state mention last year and has returned leaner and more athletic after playing at around 300 pounds the last two years.” Graduation took 11 seniors from a year ago, including key starters Sebastian Spencer, Elijah Gillette, Zak Wypasek, Brodie McUmar, Michael Zias, Dakota Nutter and

Riders year.” Another sophomore, Justin Brueck, is at fullback with Junior Carson Yobaggy and freshman Corey Lyons as capable backups at running back. Gage Reitter, now a senior, returns at wide receiver and will again do the kicking duties. Other receivers for DiMatteis are junior letterman Jayson Nosko and sophomores Kanya Green, a transfer from Bridgeport, Ohio, Max Maley and Doran Brown, as well as freshman Lee Sewell. On the defense front will be Jordan Brueck, Jones, Hostuttler, Moreria and Pugh, along with Bass at weak side defensive end. Baker and Rice also are in the mix on the defensive line. The linebacking corps will include Cummins, Hawkins, DiMatteis, Lyons, Stromile and

From Page 10

Justin Brueck. Reitter returns at free safety. Others in the defensive backfield mix are Nosko, Maley, Yobaggy, Sewell and Brown. While Sisinni’s club has the 12 returning lettermen, with 10 of them being starters on offense or defense, it could be considered a young team because 30 of the 41 players are either sophomores or freshmen. Sisinni is particularly excited about the 18-player freshman group, one of the largest classes at Weir High in several years. The freshman class includes running back Corey Lyons, whose father (with whom he shares the same name) was the star running back on the Red Rider 2005 state championship team. Also in the class is freshman Sophie Diaz, the first female to don the red and black since kicker Alyssa Shingle in 2013. “We’ve had limited time to work on a lot of things because of the COVID-19,” Sisinni said. “So, we’ll be using a lot of the plays and formations that are familiar to the players from last year. Of course, we’ll adapt

to the different personnel that we have this year, but we just aren’t going to have the time early on to fine-tune things. “We’ll develop and build on a foundation as the season moves along. We’ll use some play action with our passing game and strive to get Bass open so he can do his thing. The 4-2-5 defense that we used last year will be our bread and butter because with that, we can adapt to what the opponents are doing to us offensively.” Sisinni has Terry Rea returning as defensive coordinator. Rea coached the Red Riders several years ago and left for a stint coaching at a Raleigh, N.C.-area high school program. Tom Taylor is the offensive coordinator, and T. J. Miller is special teams coordinator. The remainder of the staff includes Gerard Spencer, Dave Cowden, John Leary, Quentin Smith, Zack Hartman and Matt DeAngelis. OFFICIALLY TAKING OVER Sisinni wanted to be a high school head football coach ever since his father coached him in pee wee football. And, Sisinni could not have asked for a better situation at a

better time in a better place. He was officially hired as the new Weir High football coach in late April. “First and foremost, I’m very humbled and honored to be the head coach at such an iconic football program in the Ohio Valley and the state of West Virginia,” Sisinni said. “Weir High’s an extraordinary place with a lot of history. Football started here in 1923, so we’ll be celebrating 100 years soon. It’s exciting.” Sisinni replaces Tony Filberto, who retired in January. Sisinni was part of the group that brought success back to the Red Riders. Not long after Filberto retired, Sisinni jumped at the opportunity and was among five other candidates. “When he retired, it was disappointing because he brought so much to the program,” Sisinni said. “I knew this was something I wanted to do. It’s been a lifelong dream to lead a football program because I love the game all the way back since my father coached me in pee wee football, all the way to playing with my twin brother and all the way to playing at Fairmont State.”

Agresta: We have a lot of quality guys coming back By ED LOOMAN Sports correspondent

STEUBENVILLE — Second-year coach Anthony Agresta is dealing with a good news/ bad news scenario as he prepares his Catholic Central football team for the 2020 season. “The good news is we are ahead of last year,” said Agresta, who became the Crusader grid boss in April 2019 and completed his move from Louisiana to Steubenville just in time for the start of summer camp. “The bad news is we’re not nearly where we need to be because of the situation we’re dealing with. “We’re definitely not where we want to be, and I doubt there’s going to be a coach who says they are. We got a late start last summer. So, compared to that, we’re in a pretty good situation.” Agresta guided Central to a 5-5 record in 2019. The Crusaders were in the hunt for a Division VII, Region 25 playoff spot until Week 10. Fifteen seniors departed through graduation, including running back Jeffrey Dawson, defensive back Anthony LeFever and linebacker Anthony (Junior) Simmons. Those

three were first-team All-Eastern Ohio and special mention All-Ohio choices. Other contributors gone are Luke Anderson, Seth Fitzgerald, Alex Ialenti, Jayden Keeder (a second-team All-Eastern District pick), Daniel Kissinger, Nicholas Kissinger, Ryan Manneh, Chole Maragos, Indy Marcino, Connor Mort, Matt Orsay and Anthony Sprochi. “I want to acknowledge what that senior class meant to me and the Central program,” Agresta said. “They were one of the big reasons why the coaching transition went well. Their attitudes laid the foundation for what I consider a successful season. “Are those kids replaceable in person and character? No. On the flip side, we have a lot of quality guys coming back. We have a lot of young guys who started last year as freshmen and sophomores, guys like Tate McKenna, Jerome Coniker and Andrew Dorsey who got a full year of experience as freshmen. An assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns once said, ‘Same fiddle, different fiddler.’ We’ll have the same defense, but it may look a little different.” Candidates for playing time at defensive end See CENTRAL Page 17

are Carapellotti, Rook, Schmiesing, Petrella and Grimm. Defensive tackle spots will be manned by Tizziani, McGinnis, Lathem, Lancia, Fulton, Rao, McKenna, Lesnefsky, Rauch and Carver. Lamantia, Blake, Coniker, Dorsey, Seditz, Mullins, Ialenti and Fallon are in Agresta’s stable of linebackers. The secondary will consist of senior Isaac Hough, Hilson, Sollom, P. Toriscelli, Barcalow, T. Toriscelli, Bolster, Rusciano and Hendricks. Agresta said Rook will handle the kicking chores for his Crusaders. As he prepares for his second season, Agresta admitted to feeling “a sense of urgency.” “I never really felt uncomfortable last year,” he said. “I guess what I felt was a sense of urgency to get the team ready after we had a little bit of a late start. I think that same sense of urgency remains with everything that is going on. “One positive thing is our offensive and defensive schemes are the same. The kids who were with us last season know what we are trying to accomplish. I feel more comfortable with the kids knowing what we are trying to do instead of trying to figure things out as we went.”

Central has 33 players (five returning starters) on its roster, with 15 having earned letters in 2019. “There definitely are more kids interested in playing football,” Agresta said. “There was a big transition last year with the coaching change. The kids did not know me coming in. With me being in the building every day, I’ve been able to forge some relationships. The kids are feeling good about playing. In a school our size, you cannot recruit the halls well one year, then have a bad year the next. I’m encouraged that our numbers are a little more balanced by grade level this season. “We were top heavy with seniors last year. Now, we are a little more evenly spread out among the classes. I hope that as we move forward, we’ll have 10-12 kids per grade level. That would get us to somewhere between 40 and 50 on the roster, and that would be goal number one. Goal two would involve moving beyond that.” Agresta and his Crusaders were scheduled to open the season Aug. 29 with a home game against Columbus Whetstone. That contest has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Athletic director Vince Oliver began the search for a new opponent earlier this month. In Week 2, Central was set to entertain Ashtabula St. John. That game also fell victim to the pandemic. Oliver did find a replacement in Centerburg, a Division VI school located in Knox County. That game also has been scratched after the new six-game proposal. The Crusaders will open at Harrison Central, followed by home contests against River and Conotton Valley. After that, they travel to Edison, host Madonna and travel to Toronto. “If you look at our schedule from 2019, it was formidable to say the least,” Agresta said. “We went against a 10-0 Southern Local team, Lucas, which was an Ohio Division VII finalist, a very quality team in Toronto and Wheeling Central, which won a West Virginia championship. “This year, we put together what we thought was a very competitive schedule. Edison, Harrison Central and Madonna all will be better this season. Toronto will be strong again. So, it’s competitive, but it may not end up being what we thought it was going to be.”

Rovira: We got a lot accomplished By RALPH COX Sports correspondent

We Have You Covered

WEIRTON — Madonna football has embarked on a new era with the hiring of Dan Rovira as the head coach, and he believes his 2020 Blue Don club has the size, speed, depth and talent to compete in the West Virginia Class A ranks. “I was pleasantly surprised with the intensity this group of kids showed during our three-week summer camp,” Rovira said. “Despite having to follow the COVID-19 rules, the kids worked hard, and we got a lot accomplished toward adapting to a different coaching style.” Rovira replaces Darrin Hicks, who resigned following Madonna’s 6-3-1 regular season and appearance in the state playoffs with its 16thplace ranking. Hicks was the head man at Madonna for four seasons. Rovira said it is difficult for him to judge how his charges can compete because he hasn’t coached in the West Virginia Class A ranks yet, but he and his staff were able to make judgments on his team’s depth, and he is pleased with all 27 young men on the team.

Rovira and his staff are tasked not only with developing plans for how they will coach with a “new normal” because of the coronavirus pandemic, but also with replacing eight seniors from the 2019 team who graduated. They are Marion University recruit Brennan Secrist (an allstater who was the top receiver among the 11 teams in the Daily Times/ Herald-Star coverage area with 61 catches for 787 yards and 12 touchdowns), Angelo Quattrochi, Antonio Daddario, Roman Baird (the leading ground gainer), Seth Arnold, Nathan Zanieski, Jacob McCombs and Josh Gasvoda. that successful team a year ago, including seniors Evan Daniels, Ethan Rowing, Thomas Sessi, Lucky Pulice, Joe Soos, Jacob Bonner and Mason Smith. Tyler Starvaggi joins this group of seniors as a transfer from Weir High. Sessi, Soos, Bonner and Smith are three-year lettermen. That group is backed up by 11 juniors that includes Santino Arlia, the leading passer in the area with 2,022 yards a year ago, along with returning starters Colton Littleton, Evan Bone, Mark Pietranton, Evan Quering and Nick Elias. Michael Burdine, Trey Kush, Cameron Gray and Nate Elias also saw a lot of playing time last year as sophomores. Seth Humberson joins the Blue Don

junior class as a transfer from the successful Oak Glen program. Rovira also is high on a trio of sophomores in Nico Connell, Harry Norman and Luke Sweat, who dressed for the Blue Dons last year as the lone freshman on the team. Connell and Norman are in their first year playing football. There is a lot of talent in a five-player freshman class, according to Rovira. That includes Dominic DeMarco, Chase Littleton, Marquis Park, who starred on a very-good Brooke Middle School football team last year, Jonah McKay, a starter on the Weir Middle School team as an eighth grader, and Ryan Cline. “We’re not huge on the line, but we have several guys in the 220-230-pound range,” Rovira said. “We’re very good at quarterback with Arlia, who started some games as a freshman and started all of the games last year. We have a couple of really good backs in Sessi, who is a veteran, and Pulice, and fans will see Danials a lot at fullback. Gray and Connell also are vying for playing time as ball carriers. “My style is to estabSee DONS Page 22

lish the run if we can. I would estimate that we’ll shoot for a 60/40 split favoring the run game, but that could change each week with Arlia’s talented passing. We want to keep the opponents off balance as much as we can.”

Rovira added that he was very pleased with a pair of senior lettermen linemen, Soos and Bonner. Both are guards and showed a lot of leadership in the summer camp. Smith should be a starting tackle with Mark Pietranton, but Rovira

said there is a lot of competition for offensive line spots among several players who could find their way into the starting lineup by the time the Blue Dons put on the game uniforms for the season opener Sept. 4 against Wahama at a neutral site. Nick Elias and Bone are in a tight battle with with the other tackles. Rovira, who has been the defensive coordinator at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Coraopolis, Pa., the past four years, said he has enough experience to know that there is a need for plenty of depth among the linemen. Norman, Sweat, Parker and Cline also are competing aggressively for playing time. “We have the receivers to go get those Arlia passes,” Rovira

said. “Quering, Rowing, Sessi, Pulice, Burdine, Colton Litleton and Kush all showed in summer camp that they have the speed and can catch the football when it is in their area. I’m pleased with Starvaggi at tight end. He has nice size and catches the ball.” Most of the offensive line doubles on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage. Daniels, whom Rovira calls “a tough kid that is an outstanding wrestler” will be one of the linebackers, along with Rowing, Humberson and Gray. Vying for the defensive backfield positions are Sessi, Quering, Kush, Burdine, both Littletons, Connell and McKay. Chase Littleton is the backup quarterback, and Dominic DeMarco will do the kicking. staff includes former successful Madonna head coach Doug Taylor, who is the offensive coordinator. Joe Petrovich is the defensive coordinator. Eric Hayden, Justin Horstman, Conner Arlia and John Barnhart round out the staff. ONE COACH STEPS ASIDE Darrin Hicks stepped down as the Madonna head football coach in February. Hicks will remain with the high school and be taking on additional administration duties. He also stated that he wants to spend more time with his young daughter. Hicks spent four seasons as Madonna’s grid boss. He went 20-21-1, including postseason action. The Blue Dons were 6-3-1 during the regular season last year

and were the 16th seed in the Class A playoffs, falling to top-seeded Doddridge County in the opening round. NEW COACH TAKES OVER Although originally from Anaheim, Calif., Rovira is a Weirton guy, and he returned to his high school coaching roots. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this. I’m very excited to get going,” Rovira said. While attending and later coaching at Bethany College from 199293 as a defensive line coach, he met his future wife, Amy Trubilowicz. They’ve been living in Weirton for the past 27 years. His son, Derrick, graduated from Weir High in See DONS Page 23

Dons 2008, and his daughter, Emily, from Madonna in 2018. Emily Rovira tweeted earlier that day, “I leave madonna and now he decides to go to madonna ??? alright cool dad.” After Bethany, Rovira got “lucky.” He glanced through the OVAC book, called Weir High and became an assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive line coach from 1993-2001. He was part of the 1998 state championship team under Wayne Neeley. Later on, he joined Edison as a defensive coordinator from 2002-03, before returning to Weir High from 2003-08. He won another state title in 2005, this time under Eric Meek. At the same time, Rovira was the head coach and defensive coordinator for the Steubenville Stampede, a semi-professional team, from 2005-06.

From Page 22

Shortly after, he followed Tony Filberto to Oak Glen from 2009-2012, then returned to the Red Riders one more time from 2013-14. After that, he joined Meek once again from 2014-16 at Toronto. “Dan and I are the same age. He’s definitely an old-school, fundamental coach,” Meek said. “He will demand physicality out of his players. They will be well conditioned. Technique will be at the for front. “He completely understands the new fads of football. He’s more than ready to run his own football program. Madonna will be very proud that they hired him. He’s a workaholic, 24/7 football coach.” After learning his college friend, Dan Bradley, became the head coach at Ambridge, Pa., Rovira joined him as a defensive coordinator from 201416. That includes a trip to the playoffs in 2015, the school’s first appearance in 10 years. Most recently, 2016-19 was spent at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The program reached the playoffs every year

from that time span, including the 2018 WPIAL championship. “He’s a very dedicated, hard-working coach,” Filberto said. “Danny’s always wanted to be a head coach. He’s paid his dues. Madonna is getting a top-notch coach.” Rovira was formally introduced to the Blue Don players that day. Before then, he viewed the roster and highlights on what he’s inherited. “I’m a little familiar with the team,” he said. “I know about Santino Arlia throwing for more than 2,000 yards, and he’s only a sophomore. Skill-wise, I think we’ll be fine, but we only have

five lineman. I would like to get that up to at least seven. “I also would like to get the roster up to 25 players. That’ll be a good number. I have to look at St. Joe’s and St. Paul’s and try to get them back involved with the program.” Being a defensive coach is natural for Rovira, so he plans to handle defensive duties for Madonna. He plans on hiring a few more coaches to help with the offensive side. The Blue Dons went 20-211 the past four seasons under Hicks, including playoff appearances in 2017 and 2019. “Coach Rovira’s background includes more than 20 years of coaching experience at the high school, college and professional levels,” Arlia said. “He is responsible, loyal and intense about not only the game of football, but also the student-athletes he coaches. “He enjoys being involved with the players on a personal level and feels he can aid in who they grow to become in life. As the head coach at Madonna High School, he will bring a focus of teamwork, respect and discipline to the team.”

Connor: I pray every day this does not go to waste By BUBBA KAPRAL Sports writer

WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek football program is on a major roll. The Redskins enter the 2020 campaign on the heels of back-to-back 5A OVAC championships and their first OHSAA playoff win, gaining a revenge postseason nod over Hubbard. Coach Andrew Connor’s squad ended 2019 with an overall 10-2 mark. The affable 50-yearold enters year No. 18 at the helm of the Wintersville-based squad. He has elevated the program to grand heights, including 11 successive winning campaigns and seven OHSAA playoff berths in the last nine years. Creek also has pocketed seven-straight Buckeye 8 North Division crowns, going 25-0 during that span. The playoff win last fall was a landmark for the Indian Creek School District. Wintersville and Mingo, football powers at one point and who consolidated to form Indian Creek, never captured an OHSAA playoff nod. “It was a fantastic season. Winning another OVAC title and giving

this school district its first playoff win in its 48 years of existence was a great experience,” Connor said. “The community support was tremendous, and the senior class has set the bar high. It was a tremendous senior class, and it truly reached its potential. It leaves with the second most wins in program history.” That was last year. The coronavirus pandemic-plagued season presents a challenge for Connor’s coaching magic. Creek returns just four starters from a year ago, two on each side of the ball. The Redskins do have 18 lettermen back in the fold on the 55-member squad. On Aug. 7, the OHSAA opted to reduce the regular season to just six games with the playoffs commencing in Week 7 with all teams eligible. That move triggered a revamping of schedules across the Eastern Ohio landscape. Creek is still scheduled to open the campaign hosting new Buckeye 8 member Cambridge. The pandemic created some issues with how teams navigated through pre-season conditioning

Creek will utilize a variety of receiver packages. When the Redskins employ their wing look, senior letterman Pierce Pietro, junior letterman Jadyn Irizarry and Giusto will likely get the call. The wideout grouping features junior lettermen Sam Coleman, Roan Kovach and Shane Lucey, along with Powell. The tight end spot is up for grabs. In the mix for playing time are senior Michael Belisle, sophomore Bryson Bodo and classmate Luca Morelli. The Redskins feature two returning starters on the O-line. Junior J.J. Orlando will return at one tackle slot, while senior Jess Bolek once again is a mainstay at guard. Senior two-year letterman Corey Cottis will start at tackle opposite Orlando, while two-year letter-winning senior Gage Simmons will be Bolek’s running mate at guard. Junior letterman Gavin Dondzilla will be

the center. Creek has some nice depth up front in the likes of senior Jacob Edwards and junior Garrett Rawson. “Although they didn’t start, Corey and Gage played a ton. They got a lot of work in last year,” Connor said. Creek will align in a 4-3 look defensively. The two returning starters were quality ends last fall — Schaefer and Brown. Schaefer will remain a terminal, while Brown has transitioned into the starting middle linebacker. Cottis will move into Brown’s spot at end. Connor also is expecting sophomores Nathan Allen and letterman Chance Camp to provide quality depth at

defensive end. Connor will use a revolving door look at down tackle, rotating the likes of Simmons, Dondzilla, Bolek, Rawson and Orlando. Franke and Giusto will get the first call as starters at outside linebacker, with Irizarry also ticketed for quality time, as is sophomore letterman Bryssan Flaherty. Sophomore Dominic Paterra will back up Brown in the middle. Pietro, Kovach, Coleman and C.J. Spencer are all in the mix at

cornerback. Powell and Ferroni will patrol the deep zones at safety, supported by sophomore Isaac Robinson. Sophomore Austin Herald will do the placements, while Irizarry is the Redskins’ punter. Bolek is the long snapper for both. Ferroni or Powell will do the holding for Herald. “We are just going to go week-by-week. I told the kids that the most important part of this is the three-plus hours we spend together as it

gives us sanity. It is the one part of their lives that hasn’t changed,” Connor said. “I know we do all the extra things like washing hands, but when you put a helmet on and you are on the field, there is something special about being with your teammates and coaches, representing your school. “We have been blessed with a great tradition here, and I think these kids want to carry on that tradition. I tell the kids I don’t know who we may play or where,

but when we put the ball down on the turf, we will be ready to play and represent the school district as best we can.” Connor is supported by a quality, veteran and loyal staff. The varsity assistants are Joe Hammack, Doug Karas, Todd Mazzaferro, Mike Wilson Sr., Mike Wilson Jr., Joe Strohmeyer, David Kemp, Matt Cowser and Justin Wilson. The junior high staff consists of Nick Dondzila, Mike Conrad, Denny Cowser, Sam Robinson and Greg Burrows.

McLean: They’re ready to win By KYLE LUTZ Sports writer

We Have You Covered

WELLSBURG — It’s always a positive when a coach knows a majority of his team is coming back from the previous season. That is the case for Brooke. After finishing 3-7 in 2019, the Bruins will bring back 18 of their 22 starters from last year’s squad. “Last season, we probably left a couple of W’s out there that we could have had. We won two of three down the stretch. We have 18 of 22 starting positions coming back and, logically, that should pay dividends this coming fall,” Brooke coach Mac McLean said. “That’s really what we’re hoping. A lot of these 12th-graders have been starting since they were ninth-graders. They’ve taken their lumps. They’ve grown up, and they’re ready to win some football games.” Like with a plethora of schools, Brooke also was prepping for the upcoming season but had to shut it down due to the coronavirus pandemic. “During our threeweek summer camp, we got a week in and

Bruins room, a vocal leader and I expect huge things out of him this year. I expect him to be the leader up there.” Junior Jake Donley also will be on the offensive line that McLean has high expectations for. “He developed as the year went on,” McLean said. “He grew in the offseason. I think swimming helped him out. Those two guys are going to be the mainstays up front that we’re going to have to depend on. We got a lot of other guys with experience, but I wouldn’t say anybody solidified anything. They’re going to have to come out and win their job.” On the defensive line, Kurtis Leonard used quarantine to his advantage and put on 20

pounds of muscle. Sophomore Hayden Parr, McLean said, has the biggest upside at anybody in the program. “He’s a 300-pound kid that runs like a receiver,” McLean said. Shorts also will line up at defensive end and also could see some time at linebacker, along with Gabbert and junior Luke Secrist. “We got some pretty good depth at linebacker,” McLean said. “The thing that hurts the most is (senior) Brody McCombs who is a returning linebacker who tore his knee at the end of basketball. We’re going to have to play without him this year and that’s a hole we’re going to have to hill.” The secondary will be the area where the most holes will need to be filled for the Bruins. Seniors Aaron Scipio and John George, along with sophomores Michael Perrone and Logan Gashler, will play the roles.

The Bruins will open with Hedgesville on Sept. 4. “My expectations of this year is we’re not going to get big-eyed,” McLean said. “We’re going to send 18 kids out there that aren’t going to get distracted. They’ve been out there since they were in ninth grade. They know what it’s like and I tell the younger kids to watch how hard the older kids work because they’ve been out there.” Quinlin Blair, Seth Coburn, Chris Gaston, Stephen Hunter, Jackson Julio, Isaac Lippolli, Brody McCombs, Jacob Ravoex, Jacob Smith and Drew Stewart round out the senior class, while the juniors include Jacob Baustert, John Casinelli, Cyrus Harris, Stephan Harris, Ethan Marker, Daniel Rawson, Luke Secrist and Dustin Zeigler. The other sophomores are Dylan Debnar, Xander Eltringham, Lester Gajtka, Will Garvey, Logan Gashler, Tanner Griffith, Evan Keener, Nikolas Kimball, Bailey Serivicz, Blake Shorts and Caden Stevey.

The freshman class includes Anthony Bachinski, John Bariska, Bryce Bateman, Jace Campinelli, Joey Clem, Blake Cole, Isaiah Dean, Chase Feluzios, Gus Gilbert, Brycen Hawkins, Robert Henderson, Garrett Hornick, Levi Keuthan, Caden Langley, Gavin Moore, Harley Morris, Tyler Morris, Hunter Mozingo, Cole Palmer, Mason Rees, Braelyn Sperringer, Blake Turner and Tyler Wise. “Are we going to have a state championship banner here? Odds are that’s not going to happen, but do we have a team where they start playing bonus football at the end of the year? I think we can do that if things go right,” McLean said. “Odds are we are standing in a position where depth hurts us. If we lose four or five of the guys I’ve mentioned, it hurts. But, there’s a lot of coaches that have to deal with that.” Assisting McLean are John Farmer, Ryan Scherich, Paul Julio, Tom Cole, Jason Williamson, Kent Kidder, Larry Palmer, Todd Sperinnger and Mike Buchinski.

precautions. We worked in smaller groups.” Not being able to meet in the classroom or on the field presented some real challenges for the Edison coaches and players. “It has definitely been challenging,” O’Brien said. “We have handled it the best we can. Fortunately, we were able to stay in contact, and that has been a big benefit. Technology has really helped us. We were able to hold Zoom meetings. That was really helpful and beneficial. We were able to stay in touch. We were able to introduce some things to the kids. Now that we are back on the field, we are not really behind. We still have a lot of work to do, but I think we are in a good place. I think we are pretty much on track on where we should be at this time.” There was some light in this time of darkness, as football teams were able to hold their first official practice on Aug. 1. Edison, along with many schools throughout the Buckeye State, took full advantage of the opportunity to get out onto the field. “We did practice (on Aug. 1),” O’Brien said.

“It was a little rainy, but that did not stop us. We were able to get a day of practice in. It was exciting. It was a day we were all looking forward to. We were anxious to see what would happen. It was fun being out there with the kids regardless of the situation. Whenever you are able to get out onto the field it is enjoyable. That is why we do it.” Despite all the turmoil going on, the Wildcats actually have managed to increase the size of their roster. “We have 46 on the roster right now,” O’Brien said. “We have 14 returning lettermen. Our underclassmen are our biggest classes. We have six seniors, 12 juniors, 13 sophomores and 15 freshmen. We

have a relatively small senior class. Our numbers are in our freshman, sophomore and junior classes. “Our 14 returning lettermen are being challenged by our freshmen. We have a lot of talent in our freshman class. They had a lot of success at the junior high level.” The virus and all of the problems it has caused has been tough on everyone, and it has also made it tough on freshmen adjusting going from junior high to high school. O’Brien said his freshmen have risen to the challenge so far in the offseason. “They have adjusted to what we are trying to do,” he said. “They are working hard. They are pushing the upper-

classmen for time on the field on offense, on defense and on special teams. We have a lot of talented freshmen. They have caught on really quickly. I am proud of our underclassmen.” Edison had difficulties on both sides of the ball last season, as it was outscored, 469-116. This season, the Wildcats need to find a way to increase their offensive production. They scored fewer than 12 points per game. They managed to score a season-high 35 points in a Week 9 loss against Jefferson County and Buckeye 8 North Division rival Buckeye Local at Cartwright Memorial Field. “Offensively, we have to be disciplined,” O’Brien said. “We moved the ball at times last year, and then we would shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties or turnovers. We have to be disciplined. We have to make sure we put ourselves in good positions.” Defensively, the team gave up points in bunches, as Edison’s opponents averaged nearly 47 points per game. “Defensively, we were inexperienced last See WILDCATS Page 39

Wildcats year,” O’Brien said. “We showed flashes of good things. We had some success on defense, but we were not consistent in our ability to stop teams. This year, we will have more experience, and we will also have more speed and athleticism.” Though they recently have been able to step onto the field for practice, the Wildcats have pretty much decided on who all will be starting for the team once the season finally gets started. “For the most part, I would say we have settled on the positions,” O’Brien said. “We know who our top one or two guys are at the positions. There has been a lot of competition. We have guys who have stepped up. We still do have some battles for some starting positions.” Sophomore Gage Cline and senior Tyler Shrieve are competing to see who will be calling the signals when the Wildcats open up the season “Gage started some for us last year as a freshmen,” O’Brien said. “They are competing for the starting spot.” Sophomore Ethan Waggoner and junior Tyler Griffith will see plenty of time at tailback. Senior Vinny Marcino will once again start at fullback. Seniors Izack McClurg and Jayden Sanders will be the team’s wide receivers, while juniors Kaden Miller and Jacob Cusick will serve as the team’s slot receivers. Sophomore Matt Parson will start at tight end. “We have a sol-

id group of running backs,” O’Brien said. “We will have a good rotation with our running game. We have added speed and athleticism. That speed and athleticism will help us on offense and on defense. Our skill players will be much improved. We will be faster on defense. We will be more athletic.” Three starters return on the offensive line. Sophomore Jayden Clancey will get the starting nod at left tackle, while either junior Noah Snyder or senior Jacob Fenske will man the left guard position. Sophomore Isaac Firm will start at center. On the right side of the line, junior Kolten Hanlin will play right guard,

while juniors Hunter Russell and Nathan Black battle it out for the starting spot at right tackle. There also are some younger players in the mix for time on the line. “We want to control the ball,” O’Brien said. “We want to establish the run. We have added some tweaks to our offense which will help our running backs. I think we have a talented backfield. We have three guys who can carry the ball. We are going to have some deception. We are going to use our athleticism and our speed. We are going to be balanced, but we do want to establish the run.” Edison has made some adjustments on

the defensive side of the ball heading into this season, switching to a base 4-4. On the defensive line, Firm and Russell will start at defensive end, while the tackles will be Hanlin and Clancey. “We have a number of other guys who may rotate in at defensive tackle,” O’Brien said. Griffith and Marcino are the team’s inside linebackers, while Cusick, Miller and Waggoner all will see time at outside linebacker. In the secondary, McClurg and Cline will be the squad’s starting cornerbacks, while Sanders will start at free safety. Freshman Mason See WILDCATS Page 41

Wildcats Montgomery and Sanders are competing for the kicking duties, while Sanders and McClurg are battling it out to be the team’s punter. Shrieve, Cusick and Griffith will return kicks, while Shrieve will be the team’s top punt returner. Griffith also will serve as the team’s long snapper, while sophomore Cole Jackson will be the team’s holder. The Wildcats are looking to get off to a good start and are hoping to put their 11-game losing streak to bed as soon as possible.

“It is definitely important for us to start the season off on a good note,” O’Brien said. “We open the season with (Toronto). That kind of gives us a fresh start. We want to play well in Week 1.” While the future remains uncertain, the Wildcats are preparing to play a 10-game schedule once again this season. For now, they are excited about being able to be out on the field together as a family. “It is great to be together as a family again,” O’Brien said. “It is great to be able to

be back with everyone on the field. We are putting in a lot of hard work. This is a great experience.” O’Brien will be assisted by Jason Fogle, Al Johnson, Bruce Palmer, Mike Collopy, Nolan Marcus and Collin Skeeles. “We are excited,” O’Brien said. “We are just taking things day by day. We have a Week 1 game, and we hope we are able to get the season started. We just want to take advantage of the opportunities we have.” What is in store for this year is not known, but there is a

From Page 39

lot of excitement about the future out at Edison as several improvements will be made for athletics out at the high school site. “Absolutely, we are excited about everything that is going on,” O’Brien said. “We were able to practice on the new turf. That was an amazing experience. It is a blessing. We are looking forward to all of the new things that will be happening at the school. The underclassmen are really looking forward to the future. They are really excited.”

Arneault: We want everyone fighting By RALPH COX Sports correspondent

We Have You Covered

NEW MANCHESTER — When Ted Arneault became the head football coach at Oak Glen four years ago, he began a culture change. The results of the seeds that he planted began to blossom last year when Arneault’s Golden Bears went undefeated through the regular season, finished with the sixth ranking and reached the semifinals of the state Class AA playoffs. Getting beat 38-7 by eventual state champion Bridgeport was a disappointment for sure, but that team can take pride in having the first undefeated regular season and the best overall record of 12-1 in school history. While there are challenges, the 2020 Golden Bears head into the season with 15 tournament-tested and seasoned lettermen, so expectations at the northern most high school in West Virginia are high. The coronavirus pandemic, perhaps, is the biggest challenge. There are many health safeguards and protocols that Oak Glen and all high school sports teams

must comply with, making a new normal that is vastly different from ways coaches and players did things up until now. Arneault is confident his veteran club, with the new culture now established, can get through the COVID-19 challenge. The on-field challenges of replacing the inside linebacker corps that departed through graduation and a shortage of depth that might be needed to make it through a 10-game regular season also are obstacles. That includes the addition of five Class AAA teams, along with a perennial power in AA. The Golden Bears had the top defense in terms of yards allowed among the 11 schools in the

Herald-Star/Daily Times coverage area. A trio of inside linebackers gone in Preston Brown, Seth Mozingo and Connor Adams could be a challenge. The defense yielded only 1,595 yards. Mozingo and Adams also were key figures in the offense at tight end and guard. Perhaps the bigger shoes to fill belong to Michael Lemly, the first-team all-state defensive back, whose outstanding play earned him the Cecil Lee Award as the best defensive back in the state. Arneault also is looking to replace Zach Taylor, who was a stalwart the past three years as a receiver. In his senior season, he snared 26 passes for 556 yards. He also will have to find

a kicker to replace the departed Matt Wright. The Golden Bears had the second-best offense in the area based on the 4,373 yards gained. With most of the skill players returning this year, along with a veteran offensive line, Arneault feels his team is as good as any in the state’s AA ranks. “We’ll have to stay relatively injury free,” he said. “We don’t have the depth I’d like to have in some positions.” He’ll put the ball into the hands of senior and four-year starter Nick Chaney. The talented quarterback returned this year in the best shape of his career after leading the Golden Bear offense to lofty heights as a junior when he completed 97 of 159 passes for 1,690 yards, 20 touchdowns and only five interceptions. “He is leaner this year, and we’re looking for him to be more agile and able to run with the ball in certain situations,” said Arneault of his talented signal-caller, who has 5,045 total passing yards during the past three seasons. “He’s also much wiser, and we trust him with reading the opposing defenses See BEARS Page 45

Bears and making changes to plays at the line of scrimmage.” The Patterson cousins, Hunter and Gage, again will be counted upon to do a lot of the running and receiving in Arneault’s offense. Hunter Patterson gained first-team all-state recognition as a dual threat last year. He was Oak Glen’s leading receiver with 38 catches for 633 yards and seven touchdowns, and he also was the leading ball carrier with 89 rushes for 981 yards and 16 touchdowns. Gage Patterson caught 27 of Chaney’s tosses for 501 yards and eight scores. Rounding out the backfield is Paxton Shuman at fullback. Called upon by Arneault to get the short yardage with his power running, the 250-pounder paced the Gold-

en Bears with 794 yards on the ground on 119 carries last season. He reached pay dirt 13 times. “We don’t have real big linemen, but what we have are athletic linemen,” Arneault said. “We probably average about 210 pounds on our offensive line.” The veteran all-senior offensive line is led by 185-pound guard Kyler O’Connor, who earned allstate honors last year. The other guard returning is Danny Bealles, who gained a lot of experience rotating into the position off the bench. Matt Malick returns as a threeyear starter at center. He was second-team all-state in 2019. Jeremy Taylor and Ethan Hooker also are three-year starters at tackle. Taylor is the biggest of the linemen at 236 pounds. “These guys saw a lot of action last year, but we have some talented guys right behind them battling for playing time in juniors Gage Logston and Jordon Morris

and sophomore Josh Blake,” Arneault said. “I told everyone when we began summer camp that as far as I was concerned, all positions were open. Just because they were starters last year doesn’t mean someone might beat them out. “That’s part of our culture. We want everyone fighting for playing time.” The defense has plenty of talent returning, too. Gage Patterson returns at outside linebacker. At 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, he was the leading tackler for the Bears last year with 120. “He is very physical, quick and hits hard,” Arneault said. “He’s also our punter.” Senior Brayden Mineard returns at cornerback, where his nine interceptions garnered him second-team all-state laurels last year. Evan Geisse, a senior letterman at cornerback, has been impressive in early practices. Arenault said those battling for playing time on the defensive side are juniors Dylan Conley and Jordan Morris, along with sophomores Kholton Goodlin, Mat Green-

lief and Tristen McCauley. The Oak Glen coaching staff remains basically unchanged. Chris Hill is the defensive coordinator, Arneault coordinates the offense, Pat Chaney is the “offensive boss man” and offensive line coach Brian Cunningham is the first assistant. Ted Arneault Sr. is special teams coordinator, Tyler Ossman coaches defensive backs, Ethan Delekta the inside linebackers and running backs, Vance Miller the defensive line, Jason Wiley is quarterbacks coach and Scott Pryor coaches the outside linebackers. Arneault summed up his 52-man squad this way: “This team has playoff experience and a proven capacity to win. They raised the bar last year bringing more expectations to this year, along with higher goals. I think the biggest change here has been in the culture and relationships between the players among themselves and also with the coaches and players. That has brought a sense of trust and accountability within all of us.”

Franke: Our message was for the players to enjoy it By AARON PETCHAL Sports correspondent

TORONTO — The two biggest questions facing the Toronto football team this season are what will the Red Knights do for an encore following last season’s successful campaign and will they even get a chance? After missing the playoffs for three straight seasons, the Red Knights returned to the postseason last year for the first time since 2016 as the third seed in the Division VII, Region 25 playoffs. The home game against sixth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas was close in the first half, but the (other) Knights eventually found a way to pull away, en route to a 35-0 victory. Despite the loss, Toronto third-year head coach Josh Franke considered his team’s 2019 season a successful campaign. “Last year was absolutely a successful season,” he said. “When you lose that game 35-0, it leaves a sour taste in your mouth. You think about it all year. There was a time in that game when it was 0-0 in the second quarter, and we had the ball at the 1. You

think if we were able to pound it in there, would it have been a different game? With kids, their mental stability can be fragile. It could go either way.” That disappointing loss serves as fuel to the fire this season, as the Red Knights look to get back to the playoffs for the eighth time in school history. “We lost that game, but we understand what happened,” Franke said. “Now, we want to try and overcome that. We want to get to Week 12. “We set goals after every season, and all of our goals was to play in Week 11. We wanted to play in Week 11, and we wanted to host a playoff game. As a coach, I think what happened was we achieved our goal and we were able to host a playoff game, and I hate to say it, but I think we were satisfied.” To reach that goal, some players are going to have step up for the Red Knights. They will be without the services of eight seniors who graduated. However, Franke knows that comes with the territory at a small school. Following last year’s disappointing season-ending loss, the

Toronto players turned their attention to this season and got to work on trying to make the 2020 season even better. But, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Red Knights had to alter their plans. After months of uncertainty, Toronto was finally able to take the field for a practice on Aug. 1. It was an opportunity Franke and his team was looking forward to for months. “Our message (on Aug. 1) was for the players to enjoy it,” Franke said. “We give kids updates every day about high school football. We tell the kids all the time that we can only control the things we can control. We cannot control the governor. We cannot control

other people. We cannot control the OHSAA. We cannot control the health departments. We need to control what we are doing. We have to protect ourselves. We have to be careful what we are doing socially and what events or things we go to. “We are ahead of the curve. With COVID-19, we are taking every precaution necessary. We just had our first practice, and I think if we had to play a game tomorrow, we would be fine. Our kids know what they are doing. We had kids fill in last year who saw significant time. We are in a good place.” Though a lot has changed since Toronto last stepped on to the field for a game, not everything has gone by

the wayside. “Toronto football is tough,” Franke said. “We are tough mentally and tough physically. If we lose, you are going to have to beat us, and it is not going to be easy. We have a lot of pride in ourselves. A team may be more athletic than we are, but we are not going to quit. You are not going to be more physical than us. You are not going to work harder than us. You are not going to be as tough mentally as us. “We have 34 kids. We are usually around that number. We had 31 at the end of last year. We are right about where we have been the last two years.” With the exception of the incoming freshmen, everyone else (26) on the roster earned a letter last season. As a result of Toronto’s success last year, its underclassmen received a good bit of playing time on Friday nights. All of that experience will prove to be a big strength for the Red Knights this season. “I would say a strength is our offensive line and our backfield,” Franke said. “All five of our starting linemen started at some point

last season. We have a 1,000-yard rusher in Garrett Dozier. We have a 600-yard rusher in JoJo Savage. I would say our biggest strength would be our experience. Our quarterback — Caleb Leasure — threw for 1,400 yards last year. We have a good core group of returners.” Some spots need to be filled, but Franke believes some players on his team are ready to step up and fill those key roles. “We do have to replace our receiving core and our defensive backfield,” Franke said. “I would say nine of our 11 starters on offense are set, and I would say eight of our 11 starters on defense are set.” Leasure, the team’s senior signal-caller, returns as the team’s starting quarterback. Leasure had a solid season last year. The Red Knights have a solid 1-2 punch in the backfield, as seniors Dozier and Savage return. Another senior, Ryan Matyas, will lead the way for the dynamic duo as the team’s fullback. Talented junior Shane Keenan is expected to play a vital role in the passing game this

season. The tight end is drawing attention from some Division I schools. The new wide receiving core will consist of Devin Corrao, Brant Reeves and Bryson Anderson. Corrao and Anderson are seniors, while Reeves is a junior. Senior Nathan Haines will man the left tackle spot, while sophomore Ashton Ellis will line up next to him as guard. Senior Chris Parker returns at center. Senior B.J. Pearson will handle the right guard duties, while junior Josh Fancher serves as the team’s right tackle. “We are not going to try and do anything different,” Franke said. “Why fix what isn’t broke? We had a lot of success last year. We had a productive offense. We are going to do some different things. Our wide receivers are all seniors. Shane Keenan is going to more of an integral part of our offense. He is a 6-7, 290-pound tight end. He is going to get a lot of Division I offers. He is going to get a lot of targets this season.” On the defensive line, Fancher will play left end, sophomore Landon Thomas will be the team’s nose tackle and

Pearson and Keenan are also ends. At linebacker, senior Jack Rawson and Reeves will play on the outside, while Matyas and Parker will handle the inside responsibilities. In the secondary, Corrao and Savage will be the cornerbacks, while Anderson will serve as the team’s safety. As far as the special teams go, Pearson will handle the kicking and punting duties. Corrao and Savage will handle the jobs of being the kick and punt returners. Anderson will be the team’s long snapper. Junior Aiden Mick will be the holder and also is expected to have a Taysom Hill-type role for the offense. “Aiden Mick is our backup quarterback,” Franke said. “He is going to see time on the field on Friday nights. He will see time at either quarterback or running back. He is a very athletic kid. He is going to be on the field often. There may be times when he and Caleb Leasure are both on the field at the same time.” Another versatile player expected to see time when Toronto has the ball is freshman Cam Baker, while senior Jayden Olesky is expected to contribute

on defense. Toronto was originally scheduled to open up the season at arch-rival Wellsville. That game has been moved to the final week of the season. The Tigers defeated the Red Knights, 26-15, in last season’s opener at Clarke Hinkle Field. The Red Knights now open with a home contest against another rival, Edison. “We know it can come to an end at any time,” Franke said. “We are going to continue to work and continue to prepare ourselves every single day. No matter what happens, we are going to be prepared for it. Every day we tell the kids, especially the seniors, this could be your last high school football practice. We tell them to give it their all every day. We can only control what we can control.” Though Toronto began last season with that defeat, it quickly righted the ship with a five-game winning streak. The team ended the regular season on a three-game winning streak heading into its playoff game. Though the Red Knights quickly rebounded from the loss to the Tigers last season, Franke hopes his team is not forced

to have to do the same thing once again this season. Matt Ludwig (defensive coordinator), Dave Dozier, John Parker, Ricky Daugherty, Mike Conlon, Blaine Rawson, Earl Heaton and Josh Wilson will serve as the team’s assistant coaches. Franke will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator. The familiarity between the coaching staff and the players have played a key role in helping the team during these unpredictable times. “Absolutely, especially when it comes to the players,” Franke said. “We have a ton of seniors, and they will start on both sides of the ball. Things are night and day from my first year. If we had to play a game tomorrow, 85 percent of our playbook would be in use. There might be some wrinkles we have not added in yet, but if we had to play a game tomorrow, we would be ready to go. “If we had to deal with COVID three years ago, when I was trying to implement a new system, and the players had to learn and understand a new playbook and if we had to break in a bunch of new starters, it would have really been

a struggle. I feel bad for all the coaches who are in that position of having to break in a bunch of new players along with everything else. We are very fortunate with how things are for us right now. If we had to play a game tomorrow, I think we would play really well.” As the days move on in advance of the season opener against Edison, the Red Knights are excited for what lies ahead. “The kids are ready to roll. We are hoping we are able to have a high school football season this year,” Franke said.

has good numbers, and we’ve got a big eighth grade group.” Of the remaining 30 players, 12 are freshmen, 11 are juniors and the other seven are sophomores. Hayes said the time in which the players weren’t allowed at school facilities during the global COVID-19 pandemic may have been beneficial to his group of coaches. “Once the OHSAA allowed skilled training to go on, our district put a plan in place and we’ve followed it,” Hayes said. “In athletics, we share so many athletes within the district, we have a good relationship with all the other coaches. We rotate the kids around from football to basketball to wrestling to baseball, etc. “As tough as the pandemic has been on people mentally, I think it has made us as a staff more efficient as coaches. I think it has made us realize we needed a shakeup ... we needed to do things differently. It kind of forced our hand on it, so overall, I’m very pleased with where we are on both sides of the football.” Injuries at key positions the last two seasons

also have forced Hayes’ hand. However, he is hoping that experience pays off this year. It also helps to have a veteran quarterback returning, and Harrison Central certainly has that. The Huskies have one of the best talents around in senior Kobe Mitchell. He was a third-team All-Ohio performer last season as a defensive back and has lettered three times. “One of the best around. I’m biased, of course, but if he isn’t the best player in the Ohio Valley, he’s darn close. That’s not taking anything away from anyone else,” Hayes said. “This will be his third season as the starting quarterback, so he’s got 20 games under his belt. He’s also started since he was a freshman on the defensive side of the ball. “This year, I’ve noticed a physical change in him. He’s gained about 25 pounds and he has grown about 2-3 inches. He also is more vocal than he has been in the past and he is, without a doubt, the leader of this team. We’re on the same page. He knows what I am thinking before the play is even called. He sees the same

thing I see, so he will have a lot more freedom this year with checkdowns and audibles at the line of scrimmage.” Mitchell passed for 1,336 yards and 15 touchdowns a season ago on 104 of 188 (55.3 percent). He also threw eight interceptions. Sophomore Jace Madzia and freshman Hayden Cassidy are the backups. Harrison Central lost its top two running backs from a season ago, but Hayes has confidence in the group he has assembled this year. Junior James Brooks was a strong point late last season and will get the bulk of the carries when Mitchell’s not slinging the ball all over the field. “He really came on strong for us the last five games,” Hayes said of Brooks. “He’s very athletic and deceivingly fast. He played some slot for us last year.” Sophomore Caleb Cowans is another explosive threat. “He was our starting inside linebacker for us last year when he blew his knee out on a freak play,” Hayes said. “He was running down the field on kickoff coverage against Martins Ferry and nobody even

touched him. He’s also very strong and athletic.” Others in the backfield are juniors Riley Kubic and Nik Evans, sophomore Drake Watson and freshmen Jeramy Malcomb and Nate Frye. Juniors Trevor Carman and Jonathon Vermillion return at wide receiver and tight end, respectively. Both have lettered twice already in their careers. Senior Clayton Nunez adds depth at the wideout position. Other possible receiving targets are: Seniors Kanyon Coleman and Brian Hendershot; juniors Gabe Marbais and Daniel Thornton; sophomores Josiah Jones and Wyatt Pierce; and freshmen Parker Hutton, Alex Fluharty, R.J. Belon and Clayton Vermillion. The Huskies return senior Ron Pauley at the right tackle spot. He is a three-year letterwinner. “He is one of our smallest offensive lineman, but he’s been our most consistent lineman,” Hayes said. “He’s a great leader up front.” Junior Matt Smith returns at left guard. “He kind of got thrust into action last year and started all 10 games for us,” Hayes said. “He See HUSKIES Page 55

took his bumps and bruises early on, but he ended up being one of our better lineman at the end of the year for us.” Freshman Lucas Thomas will start at center, and sophomore Cabot Arbaugh will be the left tackle. “Lucas is a wrestler/football player. Very strong kid,” Hayes said. “Cabot was injured all of last season. He’s very athletic and has good feet.” Junior Nathan Bertolino will be the right guard. “He started at middle linebacker last year for us. About halfway through the season he moved to right guard and did a great job,” Hayes said. “He probably put in the most work at home during the pandemic than anyone — at least it looked like it. He bulked up and came into camp ready to go. He’s one of the fastest kids on the team and he’s gained about 25 pounds.”

Also listed as offensive linemen are juniors J.T. Wagner and Derek Roghelia, sophomore Lukas Soos and freshmen Nick Malone, Nic Fluharty, Hunter Boals and Colton Tanner. Defensively, the Huskies plan to mix their schemes up in an effort to confuse the opposition. “We’ll mix it up. We’ll start with a four-man front and jump to a three-man front if we need to,” Hayes said. “We have so many hybrid-type players that we feel very good about. We’ve got a lot of kids that look alike physically. They are big, strong kids.” Roghelia, who is out for the team for the first time in a while, will be a force in the middle of the down line. He will be joined on the interior by Arbaugh, Pauley and Thomas. Backups are Malone, Nik Fluharty, Wagner, Boals, Soos and Tanner. Smith will be starting his

third season at one end. Jonathon Vermillion returns at the other. Clayton Vermillion is a backup. Bertolino is back in the middle at linebacker. “He’s a little undersized but has had to play his first two seasons,” Hayes said. Cowans is another returning starter, while Brooks and Pauley will also see time. Frye also is in the mix. Carman returns at one corner and Coleman the other. “Kanyon is a track kid who is really fast,” Hayes said. “He can get to the ball.” Mitchell will start at safety and probably play at corner some, according to the head coach. Hutton has earned playing time during camp. Marbais, who took a year off, has come back a little bigger and stronger, Hayes said. Other defensive backs include Madzia, Cassidy, Nunez,

Kubic, Jones, Pierce, Watson, Hendershot, Evans, Alex Fluharty, Thornton, Belon and Malcomb. Special teams is an aspect of the game that Hayes is really confident about. Madzia returns as the placekicker after booting 20 point-afters last fall as a fresh-faced freshman. “People don’t talk about kickers much because it’s not a glorious position and either nobody claps for you or you get booed,” Hayes said. “You don’t really appreciate them until you don’t have one.” Mitchell will once again do the punting. Due to the abbreviated schedule, Harrison Central was left scrambling to field a formidable slate. Instead of playing Claymont in the season-opener in what Hayes referred to as “The Battle of Tappan Lake,” the Huskies See HUSKIES Page 63

Martins Ferry who will be taking over the role of starting quarterback. Trey Hoover is a talented sophomore who will be leading the offensive unit this season. At the end of last season, Herbert bid farewell to a good group of 11 graduating seniors. That group included four-year letterman Seth Richardson, along with Lane Herbert, Ethan Powell, Gino Barber, Corban Westfall, Walker Doty, Charlie Smith, Zac Cesario, Sam Sabo, Garrett Cesario and Andrew Toto. That group was the basis of the first three teams that Herbert had at Buckeye. Now in his fourth season, he begins to rebuild off those first three years. “Depth will be our shortfall,” Herbert said. “I like our interior line on both sides of the ball. They bring a lot of experience. We also have a couple seniors who will be back after lettering the past three seasons. “Our strength will be in our experienced line, but our weakness will be in our depth. Just as always, we will be hoping to stay away from injuries that could force us to dip into our more inexperienced players too soon.”

Starting the new season, Herbert will welcome back seven seniors that include quarterback/cornerback Taylor, running back/linebacker Danny Nation, fullback/linebacker Austin Langford, wide receiver/safety Andrew Wharton, running back/ defensive back Jacob Zanes, tight end/linebacker Tyler Donahue and center/nose tackle Alexio Morales. Buckeye will be suiting up a large group of junior players that includes some with considerable experience from a year ago. Juniors donning the Panther jerseys are running back/linebacker Jacob Anderson, wide receiver/defensive back Johnny Leput, wide receiver/strong safety Brian “Bub” Palmer Jr., wider receiver/defensive back Seth Lewis and running back/linebacker Trevor Herbert. Adding to the junior contingent are two-year starters in two-way end Luke Darrah and tackle/ defensive end Hunter Darrah, along with running back/linebacker Ayden Krupinski, center/ defensive end Corey Olinski, tackle/defensive end Colin Lucas, guard/ See PANTHERS Page 59

defensive lineman Justin Driscoll, guard/defensive lineman Hayden Mort, guard/defensive lineman Hunter Ruckman, center/defensive tackle Kolby Keyoski, two-way tackle Mariah Pelkey and two-way tackle Michael Kuzmicki. Herbert’s sophomore class is small in numbers, but it brings some good players to the table, including running back/ linebacker Dylan Palmer, Martins Ferry transfer quarterback/linebacker Trey Hoover, kicker/ defensive end Wyatt Kalman, two-way tackle Isaac Chandler and twoway tackle Randy Wade. Eight freshmen will on the sidelines for coach Herbert. The group has quarterback/linebacker Skylar Ebright, wide receiver/defensive back David Kirk, wide receiver/defensive back Brayden Risden, running back/defensive back Noah Kourim, fullback/ linebacker Dewey Mort, two-way end Carson Basich, center/linebacker Nathan Long and tackle Zane Cunningham. Herbert indicated that offensively, he will be going with Hoover at

QB, with Taylor as an experienced backup that will be more of a wildcat. Zanes will be running at tailback, with Taylor, Palmer and Leput also in the backfield and as wideouts. Donahue will be the tight end. His O-line will include the Darrahs at the tackles, Morales at center and Chandler and Driscoll at the guards. Keyoski will be backing up those front wall positions. Defensively, the Darrahs will be manning the ends, Morales, Driscoll and Chandler will be on the interior. Nation and Langford will open at linebacker, with Donahue, Hoover and Herbert called on a great deal. In the secondary, Buckeye will have Zanes, Palmer Jr., Leput and Taylor. Dylan Palmer is expected to see a lot of time in the secondary. Kalman will handle the kicking duties and Luke Darrah will be the punter. Herbert has a staff that includes Kyle Solar, Chuck Watson, Lee Heisler and Dylan Stickler. Herbert added another key piece to his staff by bringing in former Buckeye North and

UNION CEMETERY ASSOCIATION

Eastern Michigan standout Jim Hoover, who will serve as the defensive coordinator. Along with the staff changes, Buckeye welcomes a new athletic director in Jason Merryman. “Our schedule has been downsized to fit the size of our team and school,” Herbert said. “Drops in enrollment have just about everywhere being a Division VI school, and considering that at one time we were Division II, that’s a healthy drop.” Buckeye Local’s schedule took a bit of a hit just as all Ohio school’s did. After opening with a home contest with Barnesville, the Panthers will follow with road trips to Union Local and Toronto and then back home to host Indian Creek, Monroe Central and Shenandoah. Toronto replaces Oak Glen on the slate, and Monroe is a replacement for Riverview.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Brett McLean has seen and done a lot in his tenure as head football coach at St. Clairsville High School. As he prepares for his 19th season, he’s faced with a challenge that he and his team have faced before. For the second-straight season, the Red Devils will need to find a way to replace a large number of graduation losses. “There has been some attrition because of graduation, and now we have one of the smallest senior classes we’ve had in my time here,” McLean said. While every coach is concerned about seemingly everything before a season and/or a game, McLean feels a little bit more comfortable because of the 10 seniors’ ability to play and lead. “Hidden in that number of 10 seniors is the fact that they are very, very good players,” McLean said. “Most are threeyear starters, all of them have lettered multiple times and we’re going to rely on them. We had a very small senior class in 2007 and lost in the regional final, so you can be successful without having 100 seniors, but each of those kids needs to understand how vital

his role is on the field because they’ll have to assume a greater role than even in years past.” Mix the senior class’ talent and leadership with a strong group of juniors and sophomores and the Red Devils, who are coming off an 8-3 season that ended with a loss in the Division IV playoffs at John Glenn, are feeling pretty good as they enter Friday’s opener of a sixgame sprint with Carrollton. While McLean likes the make up of his squad, those aforementioned concerns that each coach maintains haven’t totally vanished by any means. “One of my main concerns is how we approach each week,” McLean said. “We have to prepare well each week for game night and then during the game how we handle the adversity that comes our way will be key,” McLean said. “I am excited about the kids we have returning. A lot of them have played a lot as juniors and sophomores, so we have veterans sprinkled in at a lot of spots. And while you’re always concerned about the new guys who are playing, it’s their time to step up and we expect them to rise to the challenge.” Speaking of challenges, every team in Ohio and basically the country has faced plenty as their

controlled our attitudes and worked as hard as we could within the guidelines we had with as much as passion and energy as we could. The kids have really been awesome throughout the summer. I honestly think (the shutdown) gave every athlete a breath of fresh air because of the down time and they learned how much they value sports and being part of a team.” As for the Red Devils on the field, McLean and the St. C. offensive staff plan to rely, offensively, on their backfield. “We’ll have some ground influence, espe-

cially early,” McLean said. “We’ve hung our hat there the last two and almost three seasons. We have a lot of veterans in our backfield.” Leading the way there is senior quarterback Tyler Tonkovich, who is adept at running and throwing. He passed for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He also racked up 500 yards and scored nine touchdowns on the ground. He’ll be joined by speedy junior Jacob Jordan, who carried 88 times for a solid 663 yards and 12 touchdowns a season ago. Senior Will Balgo is an imposing force at fullback and will help pave the way. Following Jordan will be junior Logan Shields and classmate Carson Woodford. Junior Mason McCort also is a candidate. Splitting between a fullback and tight end will be senior standout Reese Skaggs and senior Luke Jozwiak. Juniors Austin Porter and Clay Espen also are vying to get into the mix. “We’ve got some interchangeable pieces between our fullbacks and tight ends,” McLean said. “Having Tyler back is a huge plus and not just because he can throw and run it effectively. His knowledge of the offense is a huge plus.” The Red Devils receiving corps is solid and deep despite the loss of leading pass catcher Brett Vike to graduation. Junior Colin Oberdick is back after hauling in 16 receptions for 266 yards and scoring twice. Senior Austin DaRe will take on a bigger role, as will junior Jaren Starks. Senior Domenic Pane-

pucci is looking to make an impact on the outside as well. Junior Drew Sefsick is one of the most versatile contributors for the Red Devils’ offense. He will see time at receiver, back and also serves as the back-up QB. McLean also pointed out senior Mark Benda, as well as sophomores Kyle Biery and Andrew Vera, who could get into the mix at receiver. One of the chief reasons for the Red Devils’ shift to a primarily ground-and-pound offense has been the offensive line, which has been immense to say the least. However, St. C. must find three new starters in the trenches after the graduation of Ja’Von Lyons, Austen Angus and Colton Grimm. “We lost three guys, but we have three guys, who played a lot, returning, so that will help,” McLean said. “I am not sure what we’ve done right, but we’re rich in linemen. We have a bunch of kids there. We have some kids who have great size, but they do still need some time to develop and gain experience on the field.” The Red Devils feature a pair of book-end tackles in junior mainstay Avery Henry, who is embarking on his third season as a starter. On the left side is senior Jalen McCall. Junior Will Smith, who was a versatile back-up at all five line spots a season ago, is set to anchor the line at center. Junior Joey Balgo and junior Jason Davenport are ticketed for the right and left guard spots, respectively. Junior Nate Nguyen is the top backup and can play all five spots. WHEELING — The last three years at Wheeling Central have been a whirlwind. The Maroon Knights had to overcome obstacle after obstacle. Yet, here they are, entering the 2020 football season in search of their fourth-straight state championship trophy. Three years ago, the Knights began the season 0-2 before winning the crown. Last year, all-state quarterback Curtis McGhee was lost for the season with a leg injury, and they had to go on the road for every postseason game. No problem. So, how will the valiant Knights deal with the unpredictability of the upcoming football season? “Just like everything else in this game,” Central coach Mike Young said. “If you run the option in football, you have to read, react and run. It’s the same thing in this pandemic. We are going to read, react and run and we are running forward. We’re moving forward because that is what we do at Wheeling Central. Whether we lose our starting quarterback or we lose two games to start the season and rally back, we’re going to rally during this pandemic the best we can and come up with as much positivity in terms of our programs, our kids, our parents, our coaches and our student body. We’re going to do as much as we possibly can to overcome these adversities.” Young and his coaching staff will be tasked with filling key roles left behind key graduates such McGhee, three-time Huff Award winner and two-time Howley Award winner Adam Murray at linebacker, all-state wide

Wheeling Central Maroon Knights receiver Jalen Creighton and clutch, state-champion quarterback Jacob Rine, who came off the bench seven games into the season to lead the Knights to a three-peat. “We lost some great kids,” Young said. “There’s no doubt about it. Losing McGhee and Murray, along with Jacob at quarterback and placekicker definitely leave some spots to fill. “We lost Michael Horan (OL, DE), Hayden Manns (OL, DL) and Kyle Brown (OL, DL). They were all integral parts of our program.” In seven games a year ago, McGhee threw for 546 yards and seven touchdowns, while rushing for 657 yards and six more scores. After McGhee’s injury, Rine kept the train on the tracks with 904 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. He also added a monster performance of 214 yards passing, four touchdowns and a 25-yard field goal in the state championship. What can’t be said about Murray? He’ll go down as one of the greatest to put on a Central uniform. He finished his senior year with a team-high 158 tackles, a team-leading four sacks, a forced fumble and two recoveries. He also ran for six touchdowns and hauled in a TD on offense. Creighton paced the receiving corps with 48 catches, 784 yards and 13 touchdowns, including a miraculous 62-yard touchdown reception from Rine with 7 seconds left to defeat Tolsia in the first round of the playoffs last year. Central lost a total of 11 seniors to graduation but for the Knights, it’s next man up. “We do have some great

MARTINS FERRY After starting 1-3 last — fall, Martins Ferry reeled off five victories over the final six games to finish 6-4. However, the Purple Riders fell just shy of making the eight-team Division V, Region 17 playoff field, as they finished ninth and less than one point behind Magnolia Sandy Valley. Watching the playoffs unfold without them hasn’t sat well with the 47 players, the coaching staff, the student body and the community. Well guess what, folks The Purple Riders are back and they are looking to make some noise in the abbreviated six-game schedule recently introduced by the Ohio High School Athletic Association due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. They have 16 lettermen returning for another season, including 10 on the defensive side of the football. Martins Ferry will debut on Aug. 28 when Shadyside travels north

to the Dave Bruney Football Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. “We return a lot of guys that played on both sides of the ball last year. I don’t whether it’s because of the COVID-19 stuff or the fact that everybody has been cooped up, but the kids have been excited about practicing,” third-year Purple Rider head coach Chaz Yoder said. “It’s been different ... our routine has been different, but the kids are excited to be out here practicing.” He added that the team and staff have done whatever has set forth. “We’ve been following the advice and guidelines of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association and the government in Ohio. We’ve been doing everything they’ve asked,” he said. “It took some time because you get in a routine that you are used to and then it changes. Now our kids are used to it. We’re making the best of a crappy situation.” As far as shortening the schedule goes, Yoder

just wants the kids to have the opportunity to take the field. “Anything that gives us a chance to play I’m for,” he said. “The kids understand that. We just want to play. It seems that things have been changing daily ... weekly but we’ll roll with the punches. Just give us the opportunity to play. That’s all we’re asking for.” Another change this season will be the color of the helmet the players strap on. Instead of the traditional white helmet with a purple horseshoe on each side, the colors will be reversed. It will be the first time Martins Ferry has worn purple helmets since former head coach Dave Bruney’s senior season of 1969. “I kind of like the purple helmet, but I left it up to the kids,” Yoder said. “It’s a change of pace. I brought it up and the seniors made the ultimate decision. The kids love it.” Martins Ferry lost 11 seniors including Jake Probst who was a 4-year starter at quarterback and standout wide receiver Dasyn Hores. Also picking up their diplomas were Chase Ward, Jarrett Bolinger, the Olson twins — Caleb and Cody, Richard McFarland, Pedro Nunes Bastos, Gage Kwiatkowski, Jervon Thompson and Donte Lewis. The Purple Riders will once again line up in the pro-style offense with senior Logan Smith (6-5, 195) calling the signals at quarterback. He has played wide receiver the past three seasons. “Logan is a dual threat guy. He may be in his first season as the

starting quarterback but he will be starting on defense for us for his fourth year,” Yoder said. “There’s not too many kids that have done that, so football-wise I don’t look at him as a new starter because he has started in other places. He understands football. He has a high football IQ which will help him immensely. “He has good size and great arm strength. The ball just pops out of his hand.” Senior Jack Weir now is settled in after transferring from Linsly prior to last season. “It has taken Jack a couple of weeks to get used to our offense because it’s different than he was used to at Linsly,” Yoder said. “He’s been making big strides and don’t be surprised if you see him in the game, as well.” Freshman Baron Lucey is in the wings. He also could play wide receiver. “Baron is picking up the offense really well. He’s going to be a good player for us down the road,” Yoder said. The backfield returns in tact, as seniors Chase Goff and Trevor Hanson lead a talented trio at tailback that includes promising sophomore George Hulsey, who saw quality time as a freshman. “All three of those kids run hard,” Yoder said. “They are also hardnosed kids.” Senior Evan Carpenter will be the fullback. He played there the final five games last year and was a spark to the team’s turnaround. Others in the mix at tailback are junior Quamari Lacy, sophomore Jackson Carte

and freshmen Andrew Leifer, Kaden Archer and Shayden Fogle. Junior Coltin Larkins, who is the backup at fullback, is battling with classmate J.T. Hill for the tight end job. Senior William Bailer also is listed at tight end, as are junior Michael Davis and sophomore Johnny McFarland. The Purple Riders return four players who saw time at wide receiver last season, while another has decided to return to the sport after some time off. Senior Alex Bennett headlines the returnees, along with classmate Cole Sztary. Juniors Colton Redinger and David Skvarka also saw time last year and have shown promise in camp. Junior Jaizen Miles adds depth in his return. “Alex and Cole saw a lot of time a year ago and both have good speed. Miles hasn’t played in a while but has good size and Skvarka has looked good so far,” Yoder said. “Redinger played first five games last year after transferring.” Also listed at wide receiver are juniors Tyler Donaher and Kolton Goddard, sophomores Mason Caniff, Dominick Shrodes, Dylan Ward, Domenick Tedeschi, Matthew Fox, Landyn Hores and Devon Green, and freshmen Ryan Theaker, Carter Bennett and Nathan Ferron. Martins Ferry returns four starters along the front line. Senior Noah Duck will move from center to a guard slot this year. He will be joined there by junior Zeke Bruney who started on both sides of the football at times last fall. The tackles will be

senior Preston Thaman and junior Peyton Hores. The center is junior Zak Dobson, who started at defensive end as a sophomore. “We have good size and good athleticism. We are not huge across the board but we’ve got athletes on the line,” Yoder said. “Larkins will see time at guard, as will (sophomore) Matthew Collette.” Yoder added that junior Jesse Nagel has been a pleasant surprise in camp. “He’s a big boy. He has good feet.” Senior Ryan Meeker is the backup center while junior Josh Dagan is listed as a guard. Tackle prospects are sophomore Alex Finsley and freshmen Camren Beasley, Travis Trout and Stephen Cole. Defensively, the Purple Riders will run a 4-3 scheme with Carpenter roaming the middle of the field at linebacker. The returning first-team all-stater is a talent. “The sky is the limit,” Yoder said of Carpenter’s potential. “He’s getting some (college) looks, but he should be getting offers. Not because I am biased, but all he needs is some school out there to take a chance on him because they are going to get a talented player. He loves contact and is emerging as one of our leaders, along with Logan. Carpenter will be flanked by Hanson and Duck. Hanson will be starting for his fourth season. Other linebackers are Hulsey, Lacy, Leifer, Archer, Landyn Hores, Hill and Ferron. Dobson and Larkins See RIDERS Page 63

Devils Springer and junior Jacob Saffell also are vying to get into the mix. McLean is also high on sophomores Jamarcus Webster, Drue Jozwiak, Logan Fry and Marcus Rector. Special teams should be a strength for the Red Devils with the return of senior kicker Jake Bolyard. He connected on 42 PATs and a field goal a season ago. Sefsick was an All-Ohioan at punter last season, averaging nearly 40 yards a boot. “Jake is now a fourth-year starter at kicker and will handle all of our kick-off and PAT duties and Drew just has a cannon for a leg. Obviously, I am mad when we have to punt, but if we have to punt, I am excited to have Drew back there.” Bolyard’s top backup is junior Lucas Otto. Defensively, the Red Devils will be breaking in more new faces than on the offensive side. “We have some places defensively where people are going to have to step up and fill the void,” McLean said. “We lost some good seniors.” Leading the list of returnees is Will Balgo at inside linebacker. He finished with 80 tackles a season ago. Woodford will join him at inside linebacker. Shields and Sefsick are expected to handle the outside backer duties. Shields logged 43 stops a season ago.

Huskies From Page 60

Up front, the Red Devils return Skaggs and Drue Jozwiak at ends. Henry will be asked to go both ways and play one of the tackles along with McCort. “We could play up to six or seven kids at defensive tackle,” McLean said. “They all bring something to the table, but someone has to rise to the top.” In the secondary, DaRe and Oberdick are back at corners with Starks pushing for time, too. Vera is expected to roam at safety. Panepucci is also making a push for secondary action. The balance of sophomores, who will be ticketed primarily for jayvee or special teams duty include Chyron Fillion, Jacob Walker, David Pugh, Josh Cox, Rece Spomer, Nathan Witsberger, Jaiden Zebbs, Luke D. Porter, Zachary Vickers, Luke A. Porter, Grant Swider, Vin Roach and George Harrison. A large group of ninth-graders will primarily play at the freshmen and/or reserve level. The group includes Marcus Bush, Hunter Hoffman, Colt Westlake, Caleb Walz, Tearyn Dukes, Cole Thoburn, Brennen Stout, Ben Stewart, Ryan Newton, Owen Phillips, Civin Murray, Sammy Phillops, Chris Sommerville, Perry Patrone, Toby Miller, Cody Steczyk, David Gordan, Griffin Fogle, Jacob Thornton, J.R. Adams, Alex Smith, Kevin Costilow, Jordan Clemons, Harrison Kazmirski, MaKenna Booth and Jacob Meager.

The OHSAA’s alteration of the football schedule caused some stressful moments for all coaches, including McLean, and athletic directors. Whether or not games with rivals Bellaire and Union Local will be played after the tournament ends remains to be seen at press time. The one change to the schedule occurs in the opening six weeks. Meadowbrook is no longer on the slate and that Week 3 spot continues to be open for the Red Devils. “I have a suspicion more teams will be open in that spot that make sense in terms of location, ability and comparability,” McLean said. “We’re just clinging to hope that the virus doesn’t cost us any other games.” Other graduation losses include: Jake Elerick, Blake Gretchen, Joe Burdyn, Tyler Brookover, Noah Trubiano, Nate Fusco, Aaron Jordan, Derek Witsberger, Corey Naylor, Isaak Myers, Jacob Saffell, Anthony Ocohoa, Jeremiah Burdyn, Mason Thornton and David Taylor. The Red Devils coaching staff includes Donnie Giffin, Ben Frye, Kevin Sacco, Eric Gay, Vern Ridgeway, Steve Hicks, Anthony Skrabak, Mike Jacob, Chris Balog, Jeremy Schafer, Chris Patrone and Gary Hull at the varsity level. Working with the junior high are Chris Fogle, John Kutcher, Abbey Maroon and Zach Musilli.

Special teams is an area that Yoder hadn’t settled on after losing veteran placekicker and kickoff specialist Cody Olson and punter Probst. The varsity staff includes Anthony Reasbeck (offensive coordinator), John Bennett, Gregg Bahen, Nick Stankovich, Taylor Yoder, Greg ware and Greg Kumse. Only Bahen and Kumse aren’t Purple alums. The junior high staff is comprised of Zack Coole, John McFarland, Lucas Agnew, Jon Bodkin, Hunter Bodkin, Robert Harris, Shane Krob and Drake Dobson. In addition to the season-open-

er with Shadyside, the Purple Riders host Linsly (Sept. 4) and Union Local (Sept. 11). They hit the road to end the brief campaign with games at St. Clairsville (Sept. 25); Harrison Central (Sept. 25); and Weir High (Oct. 2). He said the SPARKY rivalry game with long-time rival Bellaire is also an option with the new OHSAA rules. “The possibility of playing Bellaire is good. You are allowed to play one extra week. The only way we wouldn’t play is if both teams make it five weeks deep into the playoffs,” he said.

now will host Catholic Central on the artificial surface at Wagner Field. That is followed by another home game with Toronto. A pair of road games at Bellaire and Union Local are slated for Weeks 3-4 and precede home contests with rivals Martins Ferry and St. Clairsville. The coaching staff includes Ty Kenny (WR/RBs), Bill Bryant (DL), A.J. Barsch

(DC), Mark Smith (OL), David Nameth (DE), Ian White (WR) and Willie Walker (WR). John Stillwagon is in first year. open its season against Hickory, Pa. It now will travel to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney. Steubenville was scheduled to test always-tough Bishop McNamara from Forestville, Md., in Week 2, but that game has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Big Red also was looking for a Week 3 foe since a game with a team from Canada has been scratched. That has been replaced with the second of two home contests against Linsly. The home opener is the week before against

Dover. Big Red then finishes the regular season with road games against New Philadelphia, Wheeling Park and Austintown Fitch. Saccoccia has made one change to his varsity coaching staff, as Brenton Colabella moved up from the junior-high level. The rest of the veteran staff includes Matt DeAngelis, Gus DiMarzio, Dan Filtz, Jason Kernahan, Todd Filtz, Anthony Pompa, Ian Whittington, Jo Jo Saccoccia, John Arlesic and Anthony Saccoccia.

Riders will man the ends. Backups are Davis, McFarland, Fogle, Nagel, Collette and Bailer. Thaman, Bruney and Peyton Hores will rotate at the down tackles. Others in the mix are Beasley, Trout, Finsley, Meeker, Dagan and Cole. Bennett returns at one corner with Redinger and Miles battling for the other. Weir, Lucey, Shrodes, Skvarka, Carte, Ward, Carter Bennett, Donaher, Goddard, Tedeschi, Fox and Green are the other corners. The safeties will be Smith and Sztary. Goff, Caniff and Theaker will also see time.

Josh Franke TORONTO

Anthony Hayes HARRISON CENTRAL

Roger Herbert BUCKEYE LOCAL

Brett McLean ST. CLAIRSVILLE

Franke is in his third year as head coach of his alma mater. The Red Knights reached the playoffs last year for the first time since 2016 and were 4-6 in backto-back campaigns before a successful 2019 season.

Hayes enters his third year as Harrison Central’s head coach after back-to-back 4-6 campaigns. Both times the Huskies have finished strong down the stretch. The look for their first playoff action since 2015.

Herbert’s third season with Buckeye Local was his most successful, as the Panthers ended their long losing streak and gave their boss his first wins. The Panthers hope for even greater results in 2020.

McLean has been the St. Clairsville head coach for what will be the 19th time. For the second-straight season, the Red Devils must find a way to replace a large number of graduated seniors from last year.
