Setting an example to others, especially the younger generation, Sahakar Self-Help Group from Gaunem-Bandora has done a good work in the agriculture sector by growing an abandoned paddy field admeasuring about 5000 sq mtrs at Patne-Gaunem, Marcaim. Even though, only three of its members of the total 20 had agricultural knowledge, it did not deter them from taking up the task. Infact, the efforts of the members have yielded good results. Its first paddy cultivation is ready for harvesting and a formal function was organised to mark the harvesting. In October, last year, the Sahakar Self-help Group took up the challenge to develop the abandoned field. Santosh Naik, the land owner, happily agreed and supported the idea. President Gajanan Naik felt that the government should come forward and encourage people to take up agriculture. “There are many such selfhelp groups and if they all follow us, then there will not be any abandoned agricultural land. I think the young genera-
tion is wasting time and energy on non-yielding tournaments and programmes, which won’t take them forward,” said Naik. “We as a group were thinking in that direction and decided to cultivate agricultural land in our own village,” added Naik. “If we start from now on-
wards and encourage youth and even the self help groups to take up the initiative to cultivate, then there won’t be any land in an uncultivated state. The government also plays a vital role and should come forward to help such activities,” stated Naik. Home Minister Ravi Naik was pleased to be present for such a function and assured that he would speak to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to provide assistance to develop abandoned agricultural lands. “I must congratulate them, as they have done a tremendous job. They have set an example and hope it will be replicated all over the State,” said the home minister. “I will speak to the chief minister and try to formulate a scheme, especially of such kind of work, not only for self help groups, but also for farmers. Political leaders also should encourage and try to help such groups,” added Naik.
