Ashley McKean and Joel McPherson

A hidden ring and a surprise proposal

Jforoeleight McPherson kept an engagement ring hidden months and never told a soul he planned to propose to his girlfriend, Ashley McKean. He finally did drop down on one knee and pop the question during a backpacking trip to Europe. He’d carried it with him for days and never stopped worrying about losing it. When he was finally able to slip it on McKean’s finger, the sun was just setting over Florence, Italy, strong rays highlighting the buildings in Michelangelo Plaza while bells in a nearby tower chimed the 9 o’clock toll.

McKean said yes, and they celebrated with a bottle of wine at their campground up on a hill while nighttime descended on the city. They called their families the next day, and for the rest of the trip, McKean kept talking about their wedding. “Even though we’re experiencing Europe,” McPherson said jokingly. It is a wedding the two decided to plan with professionals in Klamath Falls.

Finding each other ... The moment when McKean said yes had been three years coming. Maybe even longer than that. McKean and McPherson had known of each other in middle school and became friends in high school. Since their last names were so similar, they always sat next to each other at school assemblies and events, and their graduations. “I think I was always interested,” McKean said. They parted ways after high school, she traveling to Southern Oregon University, he to the University of Oregon. McKean eventually transferred to U of O and the two started dating. Their relationship would be put to the test about six months in when McKean traveled to Guadalajara to teach

English in a study-abroad program. McPherson visited, but it was a relief for both when she returned home. Both agree keeping their relationship intact during her absence was a turning point. McPherson almost revealed his secret about the engagement ring once before their Europe trip. He left a jewelry catalogue open to the wedding rings section on his counter. When McKean approached him about it jokingly, he responded with, “Oh yeah, that came in the mail,” and changed the subject. McKean dropped it, unaware of just how violent her soon-to-be fiance’s frightened heartbeats were. He’d almost been made, but he pulled through and kept his plan under wraps.

Ashley McKean and Joel McP herson said planning their wedding with local resour ces is important to both of them. “Most people just have this we ird assumption they can’t get it here,” McPherson sa id. But they have, and from the dr ess to the flowers to the location, the now-engage d couple has turned their Aug. 20 wedding into an alm ost exclusively local event.

Finding the dress ... McKean had a dress picked out from another company in Portland, but changed her mind when she found another at Formal Elegance in Klamath Falls. The store has been at its current downtown location at 600 Main St. for the last two years and was on Ninth Street for 11 years before that.

Owner Miyoko Adkisson said spring is one of the busiest times of year. Promgoers, brides and bridesmaids are all in search of dresses for upcoming events. But finding the dress is key, and most know they’ve found it right away. “When they find it, they feel it,” said Formal Elegance manager Emily Ketchum.

Finding the tuxedo ... Joel McPherson found his tuxedo at Bogatay’s, at 119 S. Eighth St., in downtown Klamath Falls. He said he liked their selection. The visual in the front of the store displaying all available colors and styles was also helpful in his final decision.

“You have every color right there,” McPherson said. Owner Tom Golden has operated out of the Eighth Street location for eight years and said he’s really enjoyed it. “I have a lot of fun with this business,” he said.

Finding the tuxedo ... The busiest times of year for his store are during the summer when most weddings happen, the winter for winter formals around the city and during late spring for proms. Business is tough right

now, and Golden said it has the potential to get much worse because of how little water is available for area farmers. “We’re hoping for a better year this year,” he said.

The flowers ... McPherson said he got a great feeling as soon as he stepped inside Botanica Creations, the couple’s choice for the wedding’s flowers. “I could tell they have that touch with their clients,” he said. Owner Dawnielle Tehaman said she’s been in business for about 13 months at her downtown location at 823 Main St. The experienced florist studied under a master florist in Arizona

for two years, from 2002 to 2004. She later purchased the business in Arizona. She moved back to Klamath Falls, her hometown, when she found out her second child was on the way. Tehaman said business is steady right now. She has clients scheduled through September and is looking forward to more. “The bridal business is good this year,” she said.

The ceremony and reception ...

H&N photo by Ty Beaver

Joel McPherson, Ashley McKean and Running Y Ranch Resort wedding coordinator Cathy Henderson go over plans for the couple’s wedding reception scheduled for August.

Your special day deserves a special cake...

The couple decided to host their wedding ceremony and reception at the Running Y Ranch Resort. The wedding will take place outdoors on a large, green lawn. “It’s so pretty,” McKean said. “They had a lot of options, just good options. It’s just beautiful.” Their 200 guests will enjoy the reception in one of the many event rooms. After their search, they concluded the location would be able to suit all of their big day’s needs. “We just tried to look at everything,” McPherson said. Wedding planner Cathy Henderson said the convenience of the location contributed to the decision. An on-site caterer, rooms for out-oftown guests, and areas for the wedding ceremony and reception made it a good decision for McPherson and McKean. “We have everything here,” Henderson said.
