The Hepatitis B Community Education Project was a targeted grants program to fund Hepatitis Australia’s eight state and territory member organisations to work with community partners to deliver hepatitis B education to priority populations identified in the Second National Hepatitis B Strategy 2014-2017. The aim of the Hepatitis B Community Education Project was to engage with at risk priority populations to raise awareness and knowledge of hepatitis B and encourage access to testing, appropriate management and treatment for chronic hepatitis B infection.

The Hep B Family Tree Hepatitis Queensland created the Hep B Family Tree to assist in starting conversations about hepatitis B with families and communities. In many cultures trees are a symbol of life, energy, and the support given by strong roots. The Hep B branches are an extension of this symbol and each branch provides a simple awareness message that shines a light on hepatitis B and help start conversations. An interactive Hep B Family Tree website has also been created to provide additional resources about hepatitis B. To maintain the legacy of the hep B family tree, a suite of merchandise will be used for future HQ workshops, training, and community events.Â

Brisbane South PHN Chinese and Vietnamese education project Hepatitis Queensland engaged with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds most at risk of hepatitis B (HBV) to raise awareness and knowledge of HBV and encourage people to access testing, appropriate management and treatment for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection. Language barriers and cultural differences are often cited as the two main challenges that adversely affect the diagnosis and management of HBV, and stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier for many CALD communities in accessing information and services. HQ developed a range of targeted activities to address these barriers and challenges.

“Though it's light-hearted and evocative story-telling, Dancing in the rain communicated the importance of monitoring ones health in regards to what is a serious health issue. I deeply enjoyed watching this awareness raising film and have the upmost confidence that the outreach to the population in which this film pertains to will be vast!”

Congratulating Dancing in the rain actors for their contributions and hard work in bringing this film to life.

The resource B Aware: Let's talk about hepatitis B was adapted from the film 'Dancing in the rain'

Brisbane South PHN Sub-Saharan African Community Education Project The purpose of this project was to identify the best ways to provide hepatitis B information to African communities living in QLD. Hepatitis Queensland made a decision to utilise the 'Dancing in the rain' film as a platform to engage with the African community and begin educational conversations during, and following, its launch. This led to the adaptation of the film into a storybook. The resource was disseminated to community health services and GP practices across Brisbane South PHN. HQ also delivered education sessions to several African communities.

QLD South-East Asian Community and SubSaharan African Community Education Project The Living Well with Hepatitis B literacy health resource was developed in collaboration with TAFE Queensland to serve a dual purpose in assisting people in learning English, and secondly, to encourage priority populations to undertake hepatitis B testing, vaccinations, and if found to be living with chronic hepatitis B, to engage in regular monitoring and treatment as required in the hope to reduce liver related illness and cancer. This resource is accompanied by a teachers' workbook. The resources were distributed across TAFE campuses in Queensland. HQ would like to acknowledge Julie Haysom, Illustrator and Matt O'Sullivan, book designer for their contributions to creating this fantastic resource.Â

The Far North QLD and Torres Strait Hepatitis B Community Education Projects The Far North QLD and Torres Strait Hepatitis B Community Education Projects engaged with people at risk of, or living with hepatitis B. Workshop locations included Yarrabah, Bamaga and the Torres Strait Islands. These workshops raised awareness and knowledge of hepatitis B and encouraged access to testing, appropriate management and treatment for hepatitis B in their communities. Hepatitis Queensland was supported by the BBV, STI & Chronic Disease Project team - Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service in the delivery of the Torres Strait Island workshops. Utilising art as a medium for education, a flip-board presentation covering hepatitis B testing, vaccination and check-ups was delivered. A hepatitis B transmission card game was also incorporated into the education which showed pictures of how hepatitis B can be transmitted. Community members were asked to place the cards in order of high risk to no risk. At the conclusion of the education session, the Hep B Family Tree branches were traced onto individual painting boards and community members were encouraged to paint their own story of what hepatitis B means to them, their family and their community.

QLD HBV Positive Speakers Community Education Project Hepatitis Queensland is very proud to introduce and share with our community two beautifully animated videos. Through digital animated storytelling, Yvonne shares her experiences of living with hepatitis B. The key messages in each animation include the importance of hepatitis B testing, treatment, monitoring, stigma and discrimination. Since the release of the films in May, HQ have achieved a combined reach of over 5400 views on YouTube. Two key feedback comments were received from Jack Wallace and Robert Kemp (Communicable Diseases Branch – Queensland) citing the animations as the best stigma and discrimination animations they had ever seen.
