HENRY ART GALLERY FISCAL YEAR 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

Henry

A LET TER TO OUR COMMUNIT Y The Henry has championed new artists and new work since our doors opened in 1927 as the first art museum in the State of Washington. During fiscal year 2021 we acted upon our mission to engage all people in the transformative power of contemporary art and ideas through a robust roster of exhibitions, programs, and collaborations with regional partners—onsite, online, and in our community. During the pandemic, we delivered art across Seattle with Set in Motion, a citywide public art exhibition, featuring works by ten artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, which were displayed on King County Metro public buses. Our outward-facing engagement also included a drive-in art movie series held with On the Boards, and robust online programming, such as our Re/frame collection highlight series, which deepened our support of artists and attracted new audiences. On February 27, we reopened our doors with new exhibitions, including Illustrating Injustice: The Power of Print that highlighted the impact of printed material to communicate social and systemic injustices; Plural Possibilities and the Female Body, which took up questions of beauty and gender binaries; and the experimental film essay and installation Bambitchell: Bugs & Beasts Before the Law. A new commission by Gary Simmons provided a platform for residencies by Seattle musicians; new work by Elaine Cameron-Weir reflected on the nature of human vulnerability; and Hostile Terrain 94 engaged with human rights and American immigration policies. Our holdings of over 27,000 objects were enhanced by 256 gifts, including works by Mary L. Bennett, Martin Soto Climent, Fiona Connor, Catherine Opie, Amanda Ross-Ho, and Carrie Yamaoka. We continued our efforts to shape an equitable organization, diversifying our staff and board, and inviting a broad range of voices into our artistic program and collection. Throughout the year, we worked to advance knowledge about the creative practice, in collaboration with over 40 partners across campus and our region. The Henry is small enough to be nimble and large enough to be bold, which allows us to respond to the cultural moment. At this time of evolution and change, we are able to grow with the support of our members, peers, UW colleagues, artists, and friends who share our vision of a world where art leads everyone to discover new possibilities in themselves, others, and the world around them. Thank you!

A YEAR IN REVIEW

F I S CA L Y E A R 2021 (J U LY 1, 2020 – J U N 30, 2021)

The Henry believes in the power of art to challenge norms, transform hearts, and build community. Artistic innovation and creative inquiry are critical to advancing a progressive, contemporary culture. We seek a world where lives are enhanced by first-hand experiences with living artists and original works of art, and where dialogue and debate about the complex ideas of our time are encouraged.
