Brazil has invested in tourism certification since 2002. Though things started with sustainable management of accommodations, this has branched out to other parts of the tourism supply chain. Brazil is a leading force in safety management for adventure tourism activities and is also implementing sustainability for tour operators. Some of the key people involved will be sharing their experiences. Representatives nationally and internationally will share their certification experience and provide an overview of successes, challenges, and thoughts on the future of certification in sustainable tourism

What can participants learn from Minca Colombia? But, like in all life cycles, there comes a time when the organization founder(s) wants to hand over the business to a successor. Finding the individual or organization willing to and able to continue building on the innovative “inheritance” is not always easy. Hitesh Mehta and Ariane Janér will facilitate a panel with 4 renowned ecolodge owners, who will share their insights. The results of a TIES survey on succession planning will also be presented.

Authentic Ecolodge Planning and Design Workshop (April 26, 2014, from 8:00-18:00) You will learn how to plan and design an ecolodge, with emphasis on creating a sense of place for the visitor and interpreting the environment and the culture, and gain an insight into examples of authentic ecolodges in Brazil that have successfully operated and marketed their unique product.

Margi Moss, who has roots on 3 continents, is one of the most well traveled people in the world. With husband Gerard, she has flown around the world in a single-engine aircraft and visited the four cardinal points of the American continent. Since 2003, the Moss team has focused on a key natural resource: water. Their innovative projects “Waters of Brazil”, “Seven Rivers” and “Flying Rivers” aim to promote a better understanding – amongst adults and children – of the importance of water to society whilst highlighting the connections between forests and rain, communities and rivers, clean water and healthy living. Margi is just back from completing two legs of an overland journey by Land Rover, from Europe to Mongolia and latterly Vancouver to Panama.
