Kayaking the Keys

Fri, Mar 11, 7:30-9pm Henrico County Administrative Board Room. Free.

Chesterfield native Sam Perdue has hiked, canoed, and kayaked all over the world, from paddling in Thailand to trekking in the Scottish Highlands. Tied to a day job like so many others, he constantly looks for what he calls “accessible adventures”- point-to-point journeys that can fit in a 2-3 week window to satisfy his thirst for the great getaway without sacrificing his need for retirement security. In April of 2015, Sam and a longtime friend drove their kayaks down to the Florida Keys, pushed off from Key Largo, and paddled 115 miles to Key West. Both adventurous and accessible, the trip fit the required criteria; and while it lacked off-the-grid seclusion, it more than compensated with scenery and paddling diversity. Sam will share his experiences and offer logistical tips for those seeking an alternative to driving the Overseas Highway.

Exploring South Greenland

Fri, Mar 18, 7:30-9pm Henrico County Administrative Board Room. Free.

Experience the powerful and majestic forces of South Greenland with Tricia Pearsall as she treks and travels along the southern coast of the earth’s largest island. Travel hours by inflatable boats between fjords, camp beneath massive slab walls, kayak among blue icebergs, hike around large fins on a growling glacier, and chill out in hot springs, all under the swirling dances of the northern lights. Though the ice cap covers 80% of the island, much of the coastal lands are jagged mountains and green pastures.

Fri, Mar 25, 7-10pm Henrico Theatre. Free. Mountainfilm is a dynamic organization and festival of films about people, stories and ideas that celebrate indomitable spirit. Mountainfilm on Tour is coming to Henrico Theatre bringing a selection of films shown at the annual festival in Telluride, Colorado. The author will visit for a public talk at Glen Allen High School on April 13 at 7 PM. See page 55 for more. • Every year during our March Diaper Drive, we accept your donations of disposable diapers on behalf of Capital Diaper Bank to support area families undergoing crisis or disaster. Donate at any Henrico Library. See capitaldiaperbank.org.

Chitra Divakaruni April 13, 2016 at 7PM Glen Allen High School

Public admission. No tickets required. A book signing will follow the event.

“[This] suspenseful tale of nine souls who suddenly don’t know if they will live or die is a tribute — on many levels — to hope and survival … [and] a ringing rebuke to rushes to judgment …” — Amy Canfield, Miami Herald “Writing with great sensitivity, Divakaruni presents snapshots that speak volumes …” — Library Journal

About this year’s featured title

One Amazing Thing tells the story of nine men and women of diverse ages and backgrounds who are trapped in the Indian Consulate of an unnamed American city after an earthquake. As they wait to be rescued, each person is challenged to tell “one amazing thing” from their lives that they have never told anyone before. And as their surprising tales of romance, marriage, family, political upheaval, and self-discovery unfold against the urgency of their life-or-death circumstances, the novel proves the transcendent power of stories and the meaningfulness of human expression itself.

About the author

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning and bestselling author, poet, activist and teacher of writing. Her work has been published in over 50 magazines, including Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, and her writing has been included in over 50 anthologies, including The Best American Short Stories, the O.
