This joint publication provided by the County of Henrico offers a variety of services, events, classes, and programs available through the Division of Recreation and Parks and the Public Library. Our Mission
The Division of Recreation and Parks exists to enhance the quality of life and to foster a sense of well being and community for the citizens of Henrico County. This is accomplished through management of resources and by facilitating leisure services and recreational opportunities in safe and well maintained environments.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission
Historic Preservation Advisory Committee
The Henrico Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission represents the citizens of Henrico County and provides them with a voice in parks planning, programs, activities, and services. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Human Services Building.
The Committee advises the Henrico County Board of Supervisors regarding the identification, interpretation, rehabilitation, protection, and preservation of historical and cultural resources located within the County. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 8:30am at the Human Services Building.

• Registration may be accepted up until one business day prior to the start date, if space is available and class has not been cancelled. • Participants must be the required age by the first day of the program unless otherwise stated. • Paper copies of the guide are sent to customers who have requested a mailed copy and registered for a program in the past year. • All customers (on our email list) are notified by email when a new guide is available and also provided a link to the online version.

Limited financial assistance is available to Henrico County residents who qualify. Required information must be approved prior to enrollment for each program guide season. Refunds: Written requests for refunds must be received 10 working days prior to program start date. *The processing fee charged with an online transaction is nonrefundable. Satisfaction Guaranteed! If our program does not meet your expectations, write us. We will gladly refund your money. (No refunds allowed after first scheduled day of play for adult sports leagues.) BLACK HISTORY Month
50’s Dance: Remembering Tommy Edwards
Fri, Feb 12, 6-9pm. Eastern Henrico Recreation Center. $15.
Ages 18+. Dance the night away on the heart strings of love, 1950’s style, as we pay tribute during Black History Month to Tommy Edwards and his multi-million selling song, “It’s All in the Game.” “Many a tear has to fall, but it’s all in the game. All in the wonderful game that we know as love.” “Tommy” was born Thomas Jefferson Edwards on October 15, 1922 and attended Virginia Randolph Training School. He died October 23, 1969, and is buried here in Henrico at Quioccasin Baptist Church Cemetery. Come out and celebrate this award-winning Henrico County African-American Trailblazer. Program #4720. African Americans at Dabbs

Kayaking the Keys

Chesterfield native Sam Perdue has hiked, canoed, and kayaked all over the world, from paddling in Thailand to trekking in the Scottish Highlands. Tied to a day job like so many others, he constantly looks for what he calls “accessible adventures”- point-to-point journeys that can fit in a 2-3 week window to satisfy his thirst for the great getaway without sacrificing his need for retirement security. In April of 2015, Sam and a longtime friend drove their kayaks down to the Florida Keys, pushed off from Key Largo, and paddled 115 miles to Key West. Both adventurous and accessible, the trip fit the required criteria; and while it lacked off-the-grid seclusion, it more than compensated with scenery and paddling diversity. Sam will share his experiences and offer logistical tips for those seeking an alternative to driving the Overseas Highway.
Exploring South Greenland

Experience the powerful and majestic forces of South Greenland with Tricia Pearsall as she treks and travels along the southern coast of the earth’s largest island. Travel hours by inflatable boats between fjords, camp beneath massive slab walls, kayak among blue icebergs, hike around large fins on a growling glacier, and chill out in hot springs, all under the swirling dances of the northern lights. Though the ice cap covers 80% of the island, much of the coastal lands are jagged mountains and green pastures.

Feb 5-14 Three one act plays featuring the winners of the HTC Playwriting Competition. The area’s oldest one act festival will once again feature the winners of the annual HTC One Act Playwriting Competition. These world premiere productions promise to be unusual and compelling. Winning titles will be announced in December. Tickets available starting Jan 4.
From the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, colorful characters and a bright score combine to make Guys and Dolls a celebration of American musical theatre! High rolling gamblers, mission dolls, 14-year engagements and an infamous floating Craps game all come together for a fun-filled romantic comedy based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon. Jul 8-24 A comedy by Caroline Francke, from the novel by Edward Streeter. Daughter Kay announces her engagement out of nowhere. Mrs. Banks and her sons are happy, but Mr. Banks is in a dither. The guest list grows larger by the day, a caterer is called in, florists, furniture movers and dressmakers take over, and the Banks household is soon caught in turmoil – not to mention growing debt. Come and volunteer with Henrico Theatre Company! We are always looking for volunteers to help with set construction, props, backstage crew, costume sewing and ushering.

The group produces live broadcasts of 1940s radio shows and is also interested in developing and performing original works.

Spring Break Fun Spring Break Basketball Camp
Ages 8-14. Don’t miss Eastern Henrico’s 5th Annual Spring Break Basketball Camp. This camp will be a great place for any young basketball player who is willing to improve his/her skills, work hard, make new friends and have fun! We will work on many basketball skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding and defense. There are about thirty different Launchpad themes to choose from, most designed for ages 3-5 (pre-K to K). You can check out and take home a Launchpad for two weeks. Art Looted in the Nazi Era
Mon, Mar. 21, 7:00 PM Karen Daly of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts provides a historical overview of art looting in the Nazi era and the subsequent response of the museum community. Furthermore, she considers how recovery and restitution efforts have evolved to the present day including a discussion of VMFA’s experiences in resolving two art restitution claims. This program has been organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is supported in part by the Paul Mellon Endowment and the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund.

About the author
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning and bestselling author, poet, activist and teacher of writing. Her work has been published in over 50 magazines, including Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, and her writing has been included in over 50 anthologies, including The Best American Short Stories, the O. Henry Prize Stories and the Pushcart Prize Anthology. Her books have been translated into 29 languages, and several of her works have been made into films and plays. She has two sons in college, and lives in Houston with her husband.
