OPENDOEK verwelkomt je hartelijk op de dertiende editie van Spots op West en biedt je daarbij een programma vol amateurtheater en gezelligheid van de bovenste plank. Spots op West wordt dit jaar grootser dan ooit tevoren. Op 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 en 12 juli is Westouter het toneel voor het grootste internationale amateurtheaterfestival dat ooit in Vlaanderen plaatsvond. Dat theaterfeest organiseren we samen met IATA, de internationale amateurtheaterfederatie. Tegelijk vindt het Forum en de Algemene Vergadering van IATA plaats in Ieper. De hele regio zal gonzen van het internationale amateurtoneel. Meer dan 20 internationale en meer dan 40 Vlaamse gezelschappen brengen gedurende het festival meer dan 150 voorstellingen op 15 verschillende locaties. Er is voor ieder wat wils: (internationale) creaties, kinder- en familievoorstellingen, muziektheater, improvisatie, verteltheater, … Het wordt een mix van het vertrouwde concept met theatergroepen en voorstellingen van over de hele wereld, nieuwe locaties, … en vooral veel theater. Kortom: een leuk aanbod voor iedereen op het gezelligste en charmantste theaterfestival van het land.
OPENDOEK vzw offers you a very warm and hearty welcome to the thirteenth edition of Spots op West and offers you a program full of outstanding amateur theatre. Spots op West will be grander than ever. On 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th July, Westouter becomes the stage for the biggest international amateur theatre festival that ever took place in Flanders. This theatre happening is a collaboration with IATA, the International Amateur Theatre Association. At the same time, the Forum and the General Assembly of IATA take place in Ypres. Flanders fields will become a vibrant region with plenty of international amateur theatre. Over 20 international and 40 Flemish companies will bring over 150 performances to 15 different locations during the festival. There’s something for everyone: national and international creations, children’s and family performances, music theatre, improvisation, storytelling, … It is a mix of very familiar theatre, presented by theatre companies and performers from around the globe and in lots of new locations. In short: a beautiful program for everyone at the most cozy and charming theatre festival of the country.

Namens de Internationale Amateurtheater Associatie (AITA/IATA), begroet ik graag de organisatoren en de theatergroepen en pen ik met plezier een paar woorden van dank neer.
On behalf of the International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA/IATA), I am happy to greet the organizers and the theatre groups and to write a few words of gratitude to you all.
Na de verwoesting van WOI was BelgiĂŤ een van de landen die belangrijk waren bij de oprichting van onze organisatie. De oprichters wensten begrip en educatie via theater te promoten. Dit festival en andere AITA/IATA evenementen tonen dat we ons nog steeds engageren voor deze hogere gedachte.
Following the havoc and desolation of World War I, Belgium was one of the countries that was contributional in the founding of our organization. The founders wished to promote understanding and education through theatre. This festival and other AITA/IATA events show that we are still engaged in the promotion of these lofty ideals.
We zijn aanwezig op het platteland waar zo vele mensen, moedige soldaten en burgers stierven tijdens het bloedbad dat WOI was. Het is terecht dat we hun herinneringen honderd jaar later nog steeds koesteren. Dit zorgt er voor dat we worden herinnerd aan de noodzaak om bij te dragen tot de ondersteuning en het onderhouden van de vrede in onze tijd.
We are present in the countryside where so many people, brave soldiers and civilians died during the carnage of WWI. It is but only right and fitting that we cherish their memory a hundred years later, but doing so reminds us of the need to continue to make our contribution to the support and maintenance of peace in our own time.
De organisatoren van ons internationaal festival hebben wijselijk gekozen voor het thema “On the Run�. Dit stelt alle deelnemers van de vele landen in staat om dit thema te uiten in al zijn diverse theatervormen. Ik kijk alvast uit naar de voorstellingen. Tot besluit, wil ik onze Belgische vrienden hartelijk bedanken om dit ongelofelijk theaterfestival, de Algemene Vergadering en het Forum 2015 van AITA/IATA te organiseren.

Igor Bauersima schreef dit stuk naar aanleiding van een waar gebeurd verhaal. Julie zoekt op de chat een partner voor de dood en ontmoet August. Het leven vinden ze pure schijn en de wereld hypocriet. Ze besluiten dan ook samen er een eind aan te maken. Hiervoor reizen ze naar Noorwegen om daar zelfmoord te plegen en dit door van een 600 meter hoge klif te springen. Het stuk werd meteen een internationaal succes. In 2000 werd het gespeeld door 't Arsenaal met Nathalie Meskens en Tom Ternest. Nu door OSEA met Philippe Van Deyck en Anouk Lambrechts, in regie van Nick Delafontaine.

Oxra and Stoine, a newlywed couple with a baby on the way, are experiencing the cliché relationship problems. After giving birth, Oxra decides to go back to the army. Stoine, as an unemployed housedad, does not like the thought of becoming a single dad. The man-woman conventions come into play when Oxra and Stoine start a cat-and-mouse game, where they fight over the love for their baby and each other. This interesting conflict will lead to a bizarre, awkward, but very recognizable play.

Dit stuk kwam tot stand tijdens workshops bijgewoond door studenten. Het is een reflectie door de huidige generatie jongeren. Het gaat om ruimtes waar ze b.v. wachten op een trein. Het is een metafoor voor het leven van jongeren, die op het punt staan beslissingen te nemen over hun toekomst (werk, identiteit, geloof,…). Ze wachten op het volwassen leven. En het is niet duidelijk of ze dit passief ondergaan of het juist een moment is om creatief hun persoonlijkheden en karakters te vormen.

The play "The Waiting Room" is a result of the work of students who regularly attended workshops offered by Teatr Brama in Goleniow, Poland. The show is a reflection on today's generation of young people. The words "waiting room", in addition to specifying a location in which the young people meet to wait for a train, also become a symbol which takes on many meanings. Waiting thus becomes a metaphor for the teenagers’ life to date, as they approach a period in which they must begin to make decisions about their future (work, identity, beliefs ...). They are "waiting to join adulthood." It is not clear whether they are doomed to wait out a passive activity, or if there is a chance for creative attitude

“Naamloze gebeurtenis” is een moderne tragedie over liefde, vriendschap, en overmoed, in een modern en absurd sausje op het scherpst van de snee. Het stuk is een ode aan drie loners op de vlucht: Beer, Prinses en Travolta. De drie zijn op de vlucht voor hun verleden, en zoekend naar een zinvolle toekomst. Ze hebben een driehoeksrelatie om U tegen te zeggen, en bevinden zich op een vlak dat steeds maar vervaarlijker gaat verder hellen. Hun vriendschap is onverbiddelijk, ook al hebben Travolta en Prinses een zevental jaar geleden een mislukte moordpoging op Beer beraamd... Resultaat: Travolta in de gevangenis, Beer half verlamd. En dan is er nog dat ander lumineus plan: Beer wil een koeknuffel bedrijfje oprichten om de plastische chirurgie van Prinses te financieren. Multatuliteater brengt een volwassen sprookje met verbale steekspellen aan een razend tempo. Het is een maatschappijkritisch stuk over consumptie, liefde en het heersend markteconomisch denken.

Three loners (Bear, Princess and Travolta) are running from the past, searching for a meaningful future. They have a grim friendship because Bear and Princess already tried to kill Bear seven years ago. Travolta went to jail and Bear was injured. And you also have to know that Bear is starting a business in hugging cows to finance Princess’ plastic surgery. Multatuliteater brings you a modern fairytale for adults at high speed. They don’t hesitate to question consumption, love and the ruling economy.

Vreemde personages op zoek naar geluk. Zij voelen zich niet begrepen. Zij zijn soms ook gewoon onbegrijpelijk ! In hun zoektocht naar wat misschien onvindbaar is, houden zij er bizarre gewoonten op na. Zij zijn beangstigend, gevaarlijk zelfs, maar evenzeer kwetsbaar en om te koesteren. Het zouden je buren kunnen zijn of je naaste familie. Maar geen nood : morgen is er nog een dag ! Na “Why am I in Scotland ? I have no reason to be in Scotland !” (2006-2008) dat zij in 2007 op het Spots op West-festival in Watou speelden, ging deze groep van Vlaamse, Nederlandse, Estse en Letse spelers opnieuw aan de slag. De regie is in handen van Maaike Tubex, die zelf als actrice meespeelde in de 1ste productie van de groep.

After they met at Spots op West in 2007, these group of people from Belgium, the Netherlands, Estonia and Latvia meet again. Maaike Tubex who was an actress back then is now directing the play.

Het jaar onzes Heren 1900 – een oceaanstomer tussen Europa en Amerika, op weg van het Oude Continent naar de Nieuwe Wereld – een nieuwe toekomst tegemoet. Danny is trompettist in het scheepsorkest. In de balzaal van de eerste klasse vindt hij een baby, te vondeling gelegd in een doos op de piano. Hij geeft het jongetje de welluidende naam Danny Bootsman DD Lemon 1900. '1900' groeit uit tot de grootste pianist die ooit geleefd heeft, maar zal het schip en de oceaan nooit verlaten. Wat moet 1900 doen als het schip oud en op is, de sloop dreigt en hij niet langer onderweg kan zijn.... Onderweg? Of op de vlucht? - maar van wat dan?... Is ook zijn reis dan ten einde? De aarde, dat is een veel te groot schip voor mij, zegt hij.

1900, an ocean steamer heading towards a bright future between Europe and the US, the old and the new continent. Danny plays the trumpet on board. He finds a baby, left behind in a box on the piano in the ballroom. He calls him Danny Bootsman DD Lemon 1900. 1900 will grow up to become one of the greatest pianists who have ever lived, but he will never leave the ship, nor the ocean. What will he do when the ship is too old and has to be destroyed? Will he keep on travelling? On the run? Is his journey also over? Earth is too big a ship for me, he says.

Dit werk is gecomponeerd in 1980 door drie volksliedjes uit Toyama te bewerken. Het wordt op een fantastische manier opgevoerd door een orkest en koor. Eén van de liedjes is “Ecchu Owara”, genoemd naar een festival in Yatsuo. De bewoners van Yatsuo dansten hierop gedurende drie opeenvolgende dagen en nachten voor een goede rijstoogst. This number was composed in 1980 by arranging three folk songs peculiar to Toyama Prefecture in Japan. It is played by orchestra and mixed choir in a fantastic way. One song is called “Ecchu Owara”, named after a festival in Yatsuo. People in Yatsuo dance to this song for three consecutive days and nights, praying for a large harvest of rice. In geval van mobilisatie worden de militairen met onbepaald verlof via radio, aanplakbiljetten of individuele wederoproepingsbevelen onder de wapens geroepen. Zij moeten zich dan zo vlug mogelijk bij hun eenheid voegen. Over het project: Van in Lombardsijde, over Soest, tot diep in Duitsland stonden Belgische legerkazernes. Tienduizenden jonge mannen en een handvol vrouwen hebben zich daar klaargemaakt voor de volgende oorlog. Of zij nu dienstplichtig waren in de jaren ‘50 of in de jaren ‘90, of zij patatten hebben gejast, tanks hebben gekuist, of uit een vliegtuig zijn gesprongen; wij noteerden hun verhaal… De publicatie “De miliciens van Menen” hebben we afgelopen seizoen reeds succesvol gepresenteerd. Op de theaterwandeling van het lokale gezelschap in september 2014 werd een eerste performance, gebaseerd op het boek, gepresenteerd. In de zomer van 2015 presenteren we op Spots op West een nieuwe voorstelling gebaseerd op getuigenissen uit het boek. Het wordt een avontuurlijke voorstelling waaraan het publiek actief participeert! Het project over “De Miliciens van Menen” is het vijfde erfgoedproject van De Figuranten. Tegelijk is het onze bijdrage tot de herdenking van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Tekst/text

Reservists are called to action receiving letters, posters or hearing by the radio. They have to check in as soon as possible. About the project: Everywhere you’ll find Belgian military bases. Thousands of young men and some women are prepared to go to war. We will tell their story. Based on a publication (The Troops of Menen), this play has already been performed last year by this local theatre company. They’ll make a new adaptation based on the testimonials in the book. It will be an adventurous performance involving the crowd.

“Transportable Refugees” is a research-based and thoroughly reflected performance. It is about trying to understand what it means to be a refugee on the run. The performance plays in the storage box of a parked van, where 15 audience members are packed closely together on benches at the sides. They share this space with the performers, who are performing over, around and beneath them, and with the thousands of refugees who have been transported this way. Be preparared for an intimate experience in a very small space.

Ze besluipt haar slachtoffer als een gevaarlijk gas dat ongemerkt, maar onomkeerbaar het zenuwstelsel aantast. “Iets om van te huilen” is een verrassende voorstelling die u alle hoeken van de kamer doet zien. Het stuk belicht het verhaal van onze voorouders, vanaf de stichting van de hoofdstad, tot aan de dood van Ayapin, die vervolgd, gevangengenomen en gedood worden in opdracht van de Spanjaard Vásquez de Coronado. Hierdoor werd het hevige verzet gebroken. De legende gaat dat het bloed van Ayapin zorgt voor de rode kleur van de zonsondergang in Culiacán.

They have a lot of things to do in their small floating territory: it is necessary to advance, they have to eat, they must believe in the other shore so they don't sink into despair. “Déjà vu” is the story of that journey; and it is a scream for giving peace a chance.

The Babylonian youths Pyramus and Thisbe love each other, despite being seperated by a wall, and the feud between their families. They decide to elope and meet by moonlight in a nearby cemetary. An unfortunate encounter with a lion puts a tragic twist on their romantic plans.

En waar ons gezegd wordt dat WOI toch een ‘speciale’ was, en mensen die blijken dat te weten zeggen ons dat, willen wij onszelf de vraag stellen wat er dan minder speciaal is aan die andere oorlogen (het zijn er 513 dacht ik; of nee, 625 oorlogen hebben wij er gevonden. 889? Zou ook kunnen. Er is alweer een nieuwe? 890 dan, ja, het steekt op geen één). “Ze hebben zo’n raar eten”. Een theaterproductie met tekst, spel, beeld en livemuziek. Een theaterproductie met een ratelende verhaallijn. Een theaterproductie over oorlog, maar vooral over mensen. Theater met humor ook. Met een oorlog moet ge ook kunnen lachen, nee ? In deze workshop stel je hardop levensvragen. Je maakt scènes waarin je prutst met dingen om je heen, expres onhandig bent en waarin de logica soms zoek is, net zoals in het echte leven. We kunnen allemaal wel mooi dingen zitten bedenken maar wat zijn we intussen aan het prutsen! Maar misschien vinden we na veel gepruts een eigen logica. En wordt dit plots absurde humor. Of een surrealistische scène. Of een heel sterk theatraal beeld. Of, graag zelfs, een oplossing voor al onze problemen! Coach Sarah Moens maakt voorstellingen die een combinatie zijn van filosofie, slapstick en absurdisme. Af en toe willen er ook wel eens rare dansjes in voorkomen. Maar dat is per ongeluk. Tijdens Spots op West gaat ze aan de slag met 14- en 15-jarige jongeren.

In this workshop we ask ourselves the ‘big life questions’. We play with the things around us, we practice at being clumsy, without any logic, just like in real life. Maybe, after so much clumsiness, we’ll find our own logic? And is this suddenly surreal humour? Or a surrealistic scène? Or a strong theatrical image? Or maybe… it might be just the solution to all our problems! Workshopleader Sarah Moens always makes performances that are a combination of philosophy, slapstick and absurdity. And strange dancemoves, that too. By accident. During Spots op West, she will work with 14- and 15-year old theatre-lovers.
