Dear Friends, It was back to Boot Camp for me this month and I have to say that I’m really enjoying getting into it again. There’s deﬁnitely a feel good factor in exercising outdoors early in the morning!

So what’s new this month? Bridge Timber who feature on this month’s front cover have a new range of kitchen work tops in their showroom, just a stone’s through away in Runcorn and I also spotted some gorgeous oak doors when I was there last week. Panda Blinds have introduced fabulous faux wooden blinds to their range which look very much like wood but are cheaper and more durable and NYK have lovely new sliding mirror doors on display in their showroom. We have several new advertisers joining us this month, so a big welcome to them. Elizabeth Arnold by Dawn Farrell Elizabeth Arnold dressmakers, established at Lady Hayes Craft Centre since 2004. This is testament to Dawn’s passion and flair for sewing. Dawn has over 28 years experience, having started her career when she was just 16. Dawn’s main training has been in Bridal Wear and curtains but she can turn her hand to anything and absolutely loves a challenge and the joy of the finished product. From re-covering loose cushions on a conservatory suite or altering an outfit, Dawn enjoys every aspect of her work. There’s no job too small or unusual! Prior to opening her own business Dawn worked for seven years as head machinist at Abbey Gowns of Chester, making and altering wedding dresses for shops such as Aristocrats of Chester, Wedding Belles in Frodsham & Thelma Bridal in Ireland. She also worked as a sample machinist for Marks & Spencer (who have very high standards) and then for local designer, Carol Ryder. It was during this time that John Moores University

approached her to teach their students the art of sewing but Dawn remained with her passion and went on to full fill her dream by opening ‘Elizabeth Arnold by Dawn Farrell’. Ideally located at Lady Hayes, there is plenty of free parking and you can drive right up to the door which is very useful with heavy loads or inclemental weather! “I want to do that!” By Dave Ford

I’d flown radio-controlled electric planes and gliders off and on for years and I’d seen model helicopters at various sites and clubs. They always seemed to need a lot of setting up, hover for a while and then crash! A couple of months ago I was at the local flying field when I saw a large electric helicopter. Lots of carbon fibre bits and high tech electronics. It was clean, quiet and performing the most amazing aerobatics it really did seem to defy gravity doing various manoeuvres including one that I learnt was called the ‘chaos’. It was spinning end over end, while rolling sideways, while also spinning round and round. The guy flying it was totally concentrating - his hands constantly moving the controls on the transmitter. I immediately thought “I want to do that”! A few days later I wandered into my local model shop, spent about an hour talking about the various options/choices and came out (several hundred pounds poorer) with an electric helicopter kit and new radio control set (oh, and all the other bits you need, special batteries, an electronic gyro etc).

I fitted a training undercarriage (a large white plastic cross with a giant ping-pong ball at each corner) to make it more stable, and followed the advice in the kit instructions. You don’t just open the throttle and take off (unless you’ve got more money than sense!). You sort of skate it around and get used to what all the controls do, before doing little ‘hops’ off the ground, and eventually hovering in one spot, about 2 foot off the ground.

The simple avocado is receiving lots of attention from researchers examining inflammatory health problems such as arthritis. Healthy, quick, simple to prepare and delicious! Try this recipe of Mexican origin - guacamole. Making your own gives this dish a new dimension much superior to the supermarket's version.

2 avocados 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh tomatoes (2 golf ball sized) 2 mild chillies chopped (sweet bell or cherry peppers are mild) 1 tablespoon chopped coriander 1 onion finely chopped 1 tablespoon lime juice 10 ml (2 teaspoons) water Salt and pepper to season to taste

Equipment: Pestle and mortar or wand blender. Number guide: Allow 1/2 an avocado per person and adjust the other ingredients accordingly. Method: Use a pestle and mortar if you have one and make a paste from the tomatoes, chillies, coriander, onion and lime juice. Add a little salt and the water. Mash in the avocados. Choose how smooth or chunky you prefer the consistency to be. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with tacos, savoury biscuits, bread sticks and/or a selection of prepared raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumber and celery.

Courgettes—sow, grow and harvest

There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with! Jobs for May:Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green. If you’ve planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up. As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or on into grow bags. Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later.

If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. Hales and Gleave's Garden Centre, who are both based in Frodsham sell a range of Vegetable plants, so pay them a visit.

wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted to turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag.

May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to six leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d

With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they may have suffered with the very cold weather. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.

Jobs Fair - Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale During this difficult time for the economy, I am acutely aware of the problems faced by many of the people in Weaver Vale who are in low income jobs or who are jobseekers. The natural progression for job seekers is to have an opportunity to meet employers in the area and possibly find out about companies that they would not normally look at as potential employers. These introductions could provide the opportunity needed for those searching for work. That’s why I am holding a Jobs Fair in Daresbury Science & Innovation Campus on Thursday 16th May 2013. It will give local businesses and job seekers the opportunity to showcase themselves to one another in person. It will help young people with CVs and winning at interview. Everyone in our community has a valuable part to play in helping boost the local economy. The Weaver Vale Jobs Fair is an exciting event that will bring together our quality employers and talented people looking for work, last year we had 40 companies, with 400 jobs and 700 job seekers at Mid Cheshire College, I hope for a similar event this year at Daresbury. Extra Calendar Girls date in Kingsley – by popular demand

Kingsley Players’ production of Calendar Girls has proved so popular at the box office, the group has decided to add an extra performance into the schedule. Tuesday 14 May, at 7.30pm, will now see the players on stage performing the internationally-renowned play by Frodsham playwright Tim Firth, in addition to the planned four night run, Wednesday 15 – Saturday 18 May. The popular show and supper nights on Friday and Saturday sold out almost immediately and there are now only a few tickets left for Wednesday. Calendar Girls director Malcolm Barker said: “The response has been absolutely amazing. The show has only been released for 18 months to amateur dramatic societies in a bid to create a new performance world record, and several local groups have already performed the play. We have a strong, talented cast and rehearsals are going really well. It promises to be a cracking show”. Design your own bee and let the community decide whether you have the winning idea as they vote for their favourite bee at Frodsham’s Bee Festival on Saturday 11th May at Castle Park. The winning bee will be used to promote Frodsham, be featured in newspapers, on packaging and online. The competition is open to everyone and costs just £2 to enter.
