A couple of weeks ago I took part in my very ﬁrst golf competition - ‘Kings and Queens’ at Helsby Golf Club. The King had to be a golfer, accompanied by a Lady ‘non-golfer’. So I teamed up with my golﬁng son, Charlie and had a great time. Thank you to Graham Tonge who provided me with some very snazzy golf shoes! Unfortunately I was pipped at the post from taking the Queen’s crown for the least number of putts but hey there’s always next time!

I don’t know how he does it. When it comes to packing for holidays it takes Chris four minutes flat. I look enviously at his relatively small pile of shorts, T-shirts, trousers, shirts and underwear and wonder where I am going wrong, as I wrestle with zips and straps in a determined effort to squeeze everything in! Many of us do it - pack too much when we go on holiday, then end up wearing the same few items all week. So how can we make the job easier, quicker and (with ever stricter baggage allowances), cheaper? The answer apparently is to remember that ‘less is more’ and to take only things we really love to wear in a capsule wardrobe that will cater for every occasion. Apparently the first step is to envisage how you see yourself spending your holiday. If it’s mainly sunbathing, all you need for the daytime is swimwear – a couple of bikinis per week plus a well cut swimsuit for genuine swimming or diving – flip flops (apparently not my 4 pairs!) and a loose fitting shirt for on the way to and from the beach or pool, or just when you are nipping to the bar or loo! (Who wants to be seen in the same every day? So we’ll change that to several cover ups.)

Finally, take an oversized tote bag onto the plane and afterwards use it for the beach, or when you go shopping. Follow these tips and you shouldn’t go far wrong, but if you do, after your holiday write down all the items you ended up wearing (or that you wish you could have worn!) and use this as a guide next time you pack. If you plan on sightseeing or shopping, pack some comfortable sandals or pumps and a pair of shorts, cut off trousers or a skirt (neutral colours would be most versatile), and a selection of coloured tops. Before deciding on which ones, lay them out and match them up. Choose colours and styles that go together, so that you can make up multiple outfits simply by switching items around. Sarongs are also a great choice as they are both lightweight and versatile and may be used as a skirt, dress or wrap, depending on how they are tied. 10 Top tips for a successful marketing true in marketing material. Don’t rely on the spell check in Word (a word spelt wrongly in plan for non-marketers 1. Clear goals: Understand what you want to get out of it. Is it more visitors to your website, is it people registering for a service or information or is it people spending more with you per transaction? You won’t know if your marketing efforts have been successful if you aren’t clear about what you want to achieve 2. Why you? The fact that you are running a business must mean that people are coming to you for a good reason – do you know what it is? Why are you better than your closest competitor? Once you understand this – it can be your best weapon for successful marketing. Make this central to your marketing messages. 3. Don’t promise the world. There are so many marketing messages bombarding people every day, that you need to be clear, concise and to the point. Don’t try to pack too much into one piece of marketing. Try the 3 second rule if someone doesn’t understand your main marketing message in a 3 second glance, you need to change it. 4. Do you want history to repeat itself? What have you done in the past? Was it considered a success or not – don’t just repeat something you have done before if it didn’t work. In contrast, if your previous activity went well – what were the best bits? How can you build on this? 5. Consistency. Your brand is more than just your logo – it is everything people associated with your logo: photos, signs, websites, fonts, colours. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but a marketing will be much more effective if people can recognise all the elements of your brand in different places: eg: your website looks similar to your adverts, which look similar to your signage, which look similar to forms or emails you may send out. In a crowded market place, a professional, consistent image can often sway a buying decision. 6. Check, check and check again. We all know how important good spelling and grammar are on a CV when applying for a job - getting it wrong can mean instant rejection. The same is 32

Think about which may work for your customers or how you could adapt something for your business. 9. Join up your marketing. If you have a promotion or a new product etc add it to all of your marketing channels – your website, your adverts, your points of sale, your social media pages. Get the mileage out of everything (in a consistent way – see no.5!) 10. Have patience. Most marketing activity doesn’t deliver instant results, it will take a little while to see the impact, so keep at it and keep monitoring the results. Ask for feedback and perhaps tweak it… but give it chance to work. A Good Day, for a Bad Back! Land of Beds team up with McTimoney Chiropractor

In 2012, British businesses lost an estimated 4.9 million work days through work-related back pain. Bad backs now account for the 2nd largest reason for long-term absence from work. A survey carried out by the British Chiropractic Association showed that of those experiencing back pain, 27% of women and 24% of men said that their pain was brought on during a night’s so-called “rest”. Whilst Facebook works really well to engage with consumers, and LinkedIn is considered the ‘corporate big brother’, Twitter is where you will find small to medium sized businesses and entrepreneurs. Twitter is quite fast paced and people will rarely look back over many days or weeks of posts as they may do on Facebook because of the fast pace of Twitter it is only your last few tweets that most people remember or look at. Here are some tips for running your Twitter social media: 1) Setting up your Twitter account properly is crucial. Use a short Twitter name that is simple and memorable. Don’t forget to enter your website in the website box as Twitter will display this as a clickable link back to your website which is valuable. Many people use a brand logo for the Twitter profile image, but remember—people buy from people so a photo of a person is much more likely to promote engagement. 2) Generally I don’t advise businesses to post their Twitter feed to Facebook. This is because you generally want prospects and customers to follow both and if they constantly see the same content they will stop following you. 3) Spelling, punctuation and grammar all count and this can be difficult when you only have 40 characters to play with. Don’t use ‘text speak’ to cram in more characters, it looks unprofessional and will make your tweets unreadable to those who don’t use it. 4) Most of us welcome retweets because it gets our message to a larger audience. Always leave some spare characters for this (say use a maximum of 120) because Twitter will add your Twitter name and the characters RT to the message. On a similar note, always shorten your links using something like bit.ly or Hootsuit’s built in shortener. 5) As with Facebook—you don’t want to over promote as it switches people off. Try to get a balance between tweets, links to useful content, replies, and re-tweets so you don’t look as if you are always promoting products and services. Aim for quality not quantity– whilst you

can reasonably tweet a lot more than you can post on Facebook, you don’t want to annoy your followers with endless chatter. Research suggests that more than two or three tweets an hour can decrease engagement. If you are having an on-going conversation with someone, consider taking it offline or using direct messages— unless the content is generally interesting. 6) Don’t forget to use hashtags to help others find your comments on a specific topic or event. Hashtags can be found using Twitter’s search facility. Stick to one of two hashtags per tweet and remember that #longoneswillbereallyhardtoread. Tweeting with keyword rich, hashtagged content means that your message is more likely to appear in Google’s search results too. 7) Because Twitter is dynamic and fast moving and your followers will check their feed at different times of the day, make sure that they don’t miss your most valuable content by posting the same important content several times a day. Most followers won’t notice (or even care) but your message will reach a lot more of your followers.

Plant of the month - Abelia Abelias are a medium sized, colourful shrub with white to pink trumpet shaped flowers appearing at the stem ends in groups of 1-8. They like full sun and are pretty hardy, enjoying well drained soil and a little bit of shelter. This is a great option for a smaller garden being evergreen in mild winters and providing a splash of scent and colour during June and October. The leaves are dark, glossy green turning purplish -bronze to red in the autumn in the deciduous species (more common in the colder climate species). These shrubs are slow growing reaching a spread of between 2.5 and 4 metres and are generally pest and disease free.

Joining Jacks Team - an up date from Jack’s mum, Natalie ..... The Son-Rise programme to help with Jacks autism will take years but we are seeing improvements in him, which is heart warming. The number of hours spent with Jack each week applying the strategies and techniques is influential towards his development and a better quality of life. It is important that we achieve at least 45+ hours per week in the specially adapted Son-Rise room at our home. To achieve the number of hours we asked for volunteers, who have been fantastic. Jack progress to date has really been amazing and has impressed everyone who comes into contact with him. He now... • Has increased eye-contact and looks to maintain our attention • Is starting to copy some simple facial movements • Spontaneously points at what he wants and shakes his head for NO! • His speech is starting to become clearer and is learning to speak when requested • Jack speaks to get his needs met • Jack has an average attention span of 1020 minutes • Jack is also working on imagination play • Jack now participates in interactions • He also verbally participates in interactions • Jack’s interest in other people activities has greatly increased He has the most amazing sense of humour and fun and has a greater interest in his brother and his brother’s friends and world around him.

Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appeal 2013 Annual Fundraiser Helsby Golf Club recently held their annual fundraising day for the Powered Wheelchair Appeal and with approximately 150 supporters playing a round of golf, it was very well supported and despite the regular and often heavy rain showers everyone had a great day! The golfing honours on the day were as follows: Ladies competition – Janet Richards and Val Pritchard. Men’s competition – Chris Harrison and Neil McLeod.

After the golf there were various fundraising activities including raffles, auctions and a bottle tombola (The Appeal committee are once again very grateful to members of the golf club and supporters of the Appeal who donated these bottles over the course of the last couple of months!) The main focus of the evening was the presentation of 5 powered wheelchairs to local deserving youngsters and this brings the total number donated by the Appeal to 314 over the last 31 years. The Appeal were delighted to be able to present five wheelchairs on the day to local deserving youngsters - Joe Blease, aged 15 and from Middlewich, Jason Brotherton, aged 11 from Barnton, Liam O’Neil, aged 13 from Beswick, Manchester, Courtney Taylor Hayhurst, aged 12 from Widnes and Aaron Lambert, aged 22 from Northwich. A fantastic sum of approximately £15,000 was raised on the day and the club and Wheelchair Appeal would like to thank all the local businesses in who supported them with donations and prizes. Particular thanks must go to the event main sponsor Jigsaw Law and special generous donations by Electrorod Uk and Natwest. Of course a huge thanks must also go to the golfers who braved the weather and these included members from Helsby Golf Club and other local clubs and also regular supporters from farther afield in Yorkshire, London, Scotland, the Midlands and Norfolk.

The Knoll Surgery in Frodsham has recently started its own Patient Participation Group formed by a group of volunteer patients. The group is still in its infancy, but the members are very keen to bridge the gap between patients and the surgery. As well as this group there are more than 100 patients who act as a virtual patient group and are available to help with surveys etc. The group hopes to help promote health by fostering the highest possible standard of Primary Care. One of the ways it plans to do this is to improve communications between patients and the surgery as well as helping to determine the needs of the community and building it in to any future improvements. Health Education is vital in making sure that patients understand what’s expected of them as well as what they might expect of the surgery, and the group feels it can make major contributions in this area. It’s early days, but one way in which the group feels it can make a contribution is to promote Incredible Edible at the Princeway Health Centre. This initiative has already been started by other groups in Frodsham and involves the planting of vegetables in communal areas where passers-by are free pick produce. Frodsham Downhill Run 2013 Frodsham Community Association is delighted to announce that the 2013 Frodsham Downhill Run will take place on Sunday 7th July. 300 runners will tackle the exciting 1.3 mile course to finish at the Rotary Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Festival in the Park. The start will be at 12.30pm from the Memorial Field by Forest Hills Hotel and follow a route to Castle Park down Howey Lane. Local borough councilors Lynn Riley and Andrew Dawson have sponsored the event with funding from their Council budgets and local MP Graham Evans will start the race. The first runners will finish in the amazing time of around 6 minutes and then they and the other runners can relax with their supporters and enjoy the fun and entertainment for all the family at the Festival. Last year over 2000 people attended.
