Why should everyone live in Jozi when they're young?

If you can make it in Jozi, you can make it anywhere in the world.

A

s a millennial myself, I hate to say this, but: to those of you out there with millennial pink fatigue, we feel you! From clichéd Instagram shots of girls sipping cappuccinos in front of a bright rose-hued facade, to the constantly-Snapchatted all-pink cafés, bars and shops around Joburg (I still love you though, Flamingo Room!), dare we say that the millennial-favourite colour is tired. But just as Tumblr pink has begun to lose popularity, the Generation Z’ers have brought forward something between a marigold and the shade of French’s mustard that they’re calling Gen Z yellow. Pretty innovative, right? We decided to get inside the minds, lives and wardrobes of South Africa’s unconventional younger generation this June in light of Youth Month. After all, born frees are proving that they do it better! On the cover, we have 22-year-old super-vlogger and makeup maven Mihlali Ndamase, better-known as @mihlalii_n on the ’gram. She shares her super-inspiring story of how she’s just made her first R1m as an influencer plus her favourite hangouts in Joburg. Another born free on our radar is 20-year-old TV and social media personality Lasizwe Dambuza. Flip to Backchat to find out what ignited his passion for entertainment and why The Fanta Squad gig is his favourite yet. Born frees aren’t all that we’re celebrating this month – we’re also reinstating how the City of Gold certainly doesn’t hibernate during the colder months. Wine and dine at our Restaurant of the Month, the teeny tiny but totally cosy La Petite Maison, or head to one of our favourite winter night markets for shopping and snacking. If you thought summer had the cocktail game on lock, you’d be wrong – take a look at our Nightlife Hotspot, Malt Barrel and Fire, for proof. Not forgetting our dads who consistently go above and beyond, we’ve done the leg work for you, scouring the Internet to deliver some of the most unique Father’s Day gifts that are just a click away. As much as our city is known for gold mining, we’re showing the world that the people here, especially the youth, are the real gold. This month, let’s be inspired by the direction that the youth are going in and bundle up in our warmest clothes to see the city in all its icy splendour!

From a secret champagne garden to a no-frills craft bar, we’ve found the best Joburg rooftop bars open during the winter.

NO, I’M15 ways FROM CAPE TOWN’ to spot a Capetonian in Joburg Cape Town and Johannesburg – the cultural epicentres of South Africa’s opposing ends – are nothing alike. In Cape Town, residents deal with short-distance road rage, but Joburg natives face long-distance traffic. Cape Town inhabitants live amongst international model execs, while Joburgers share space with vermin of mixed species. And Cape Town’s daily weather report offers a grabbag of meteorological horrendousness; Joburg continually offers eternal sunshine.

3. They call the entertainment business ‘the industry’. And apparently literally every Uber driver they have is trying to be a part of that industry. 4. They start each day with a kale-apple-ginger cold-pressed juice. We get our immune-system boost from the big drop of air-conditioner leak that lands in our coffee inside the lipstick-stained mug from the office kitchen when we’re carrying it to our desk. Thank you very much.

5. Their standards of beauty are wildly different. To them, beauty is all about looking refreshed and athletic à la juice cleanses (AKA starvation), hikes up Lion’s Head (three times in one day) and a natural tan (secretly produced in a tanning bed). We want to look on the verge of death 24/7 and flaunt our malnourished figures proudly. Sorry, honey – this body isn’t t goes without saying that the mentalities of Capetonians versus Joburgers brought to you by kale and pilates! differ too – it’s no wonder there’s beef between the Mother City and the City of Gold! Well, from Cape Town’s side, at least – here in Joburg we 6. They refer to our main roads with a ‘the’ in front. You’re not driving on don’t greet newcomers by giving them incorrect directions to the city centre William Nicol. You’re driving on the William Nicol. and criticising the way they spread avocado on their toast. That said, as hard as us Joburgers try to like Capetonians – mainly because we all like being that 7. They’ll never give a straight answer about what they do for a living. guy who likes the thing everyone else hates (like Twilight and pineapple on They’re always between projects. They might be a personal trainer, a pizza) – there are some things Capetonians do and say that we can’t help but bartender or a pet psychic, but they’re also this close to getting a deal with laugh at when they’re visiting our city. so-so, which will catapult them to overnight fame. 1. They can’t go anywhere without discussing how they got there. Whether they’ve caught the Gautrain from Sandton to Rosebank to watch a movie 8. They aren’t familiar with first-come, first-serve at the cinema. At our bioscope we don’t buy specific seats. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with at Cinema Noveau or taken an Uber into the depths of Maboneng to visit you guys? Have you never heard of a first-come, first-served free-for-all in Market on Main. It just happens.

2. They’re always weirdly sleepy even though they haven’t really done anything. Being in Joburg must feel like a Xanax for them – like their limbs have been dipped in a vat of pudding. Perhaps it’s because they don’t have the ocean to gaze at. We, on the other hand, always feel like we’re halfway through drinking that cup of coffee we didn’t need.

lifestyle a dark room where everything is damp with synthetic butter? If you don’t get there early to wrestle for your seat, you’ll miss all the adverts and trivia about movies from seven years ago. 9. Road rage is a part of their genetic makeup. They almost feel uneasy if there isn’t a long line of red robots ahead of them. 10. They don’t get why we don’t have already ripe avocados. Get out of here with that nonsense! Our grocery stores put out five hundred petrified avocados and shoppers must squeeze every last one of them before buying the softest – but still rock-hard – option and then take it home and watch it go from unripe to rotten without ever being edible. That’s how Joburgers do avocados. 11. They don’t want their parking ticket validated. They’re from Cape Town and don’t know how to drive – they’ve told you this already. Now stop talking to them while they wait for their poké bowl and Uber driver. 12. They can’t believe we’re never outdoors when it’s ‘perfect weather’. Do you know what we’re doing on most of those days? We’re inside working because we’ve got too much stuff to do to care that it’s lovely outside. We only find out that it was nice at the end of the day, when we’re leaving our offices at 21h00 and a co-worker says something in the lift about the weather.

Words Candice May Images Supplied.

13. They don’t know the difference between ‘hike’ and ‘walk’. Do you know what we call a hike in Joburg? We call it walking – and we walk all the time. PS: all of our parks are absolute no-go areas. 14. They’ll never believe that you choose to live in apartment over a house. A two-bedroom house with a front and back garden? Psh. What do you need all that space for? Yoga? Living in small spaces builds character, whether it’s a state-of-the-art penthouse in the Sandton Skye or a bachelor pad above a warehouse in Bertrams. All of this ‘actual house’ business makes you soft. 15. They find it weird going into a grocery store without seeing pets in there too. And, before you say anything, it’s not service animals that they’re referring to. And... Capetonians know a good salad. Joburgers know a good pizza. Somehow this crucial difference is more telling than anything else. Hello Joburg • June 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

A GAME OF THRONES TREAT FROM JOHNNY WALKER

People of

Josh Moreira is one special kid. After his father bought him a guitar for his fourth birthday, he became utterly obsessed with music and knew from that moment that it would be a part of his future.Today, Josh is still trying to find his feet as a 16-year-old in the music industry, but can’t imagine his life any other way. Josh wrote his first song Lovesick at the age of eight and over the past eight years, he’s built an impressive collection of original music. This singer-songwriter has already caught the attention of industry heavyweights and we can’t wait to find out what he has ins store for us next. Fans can also catch his festival debut at Splashy Fen 2019. Q @jxm_official D @jxmofficial E Josh Moreira What drew you to the music industry? I went to a Bryan Adams concert when I was three and my passion grew from there. How would you describe your sound?   It’s definitely pop with folk acoustic melodies. I’m inspired by artists like Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Michael Jackson and Avicci. I think my music is defined by its authenticity and intimacy. How does social media play a part in your career? Social media helps with promoting and engaging with fans – a skill that I’m still trying to get good at. At the same time, it’s stressful to always have good content at the ready and there’s pressure to build the perfect image. Do you address any important topics in your music? Lately, I’ve been trying to incorporate messages about dealing with life and its hardships as well as self-belief and dealing with a broken heart. Tell us about your creative process. It varies depending on my mood. Sometimes a melody comes first, but it’s mostly chords or lyrics. What’s your favourite venue to perform at? Influencers have totally shaken up the social media landscape in recent years, but Mihlali Ndamase was dominating YouTube, Instagram and Twitter before glitter-flecked skin and smoky peach eyes were even a thing. The beauty and fashion social media star is an Instagram OG who’s made the impressive leap from bedroom beauty tutorials to a self-made millionaire at just 22 years young.

I

nspiration can strike at the most unlikely of moments. For Mihlali, that unlikely moment came when she was 15 and stumbled upon the likes of Nikki Tutorials, Nicole Guerriero and Aaliyah Jay (still one of her favourites today) on YouTube. The first seed had been planted. “These content curators inspired me to do my research on starting my own YouTube channel. In 2016, I’d saved up enough money to buy a camera and that’s when I started the Mihlali N channel,” she explains. Mihlali made the move from her hometown of KwaZulu-Natal to the busy city of Joburg in 2015 after finishing high school at St John’s Diocesan for Girls in 2014. “People often say that girls from small towns come to the big city, mix with the wrong people and lose themselves. I came to Joburg knowing what I wanted to achieve and motivated by the three most influential people in my life – my mother, my grandmother and my aunt,” she says. She did a short makeup course at LISOF and is now studying a BA in Strategic Brand Communications at Vega, which she feels will be beneficial on her journey to building her personal brand. “My degree will also help me manage current brand partnerships and be useful for future business ventures – I believe in having multiple streams of income.”

On making her first R1m... I owe my success to my determination to succeed. When I decided to pursue a career in beauty, many people questioned how I’d succeed as a makeup artist, so I owe it to myself – I worked extremely hard to become the best person I can be and to prove the doubters wrong. Being an influencer is hard work! You need to be in creative thinking mode 24/7 and dedicated to filming and editing. It can also be emotionally draining at times considering you’re putting yourself out there, which makes you vulnerable. My top tip for aspiring vloggers is to remain authentic, consistent and determined.

Words Candice May Images Phillip Santos

Mihlali’s first paid campaign was hosting NYX makeup masterclasses when the brand launched in South Africa. Since then, she’s been crowned the first face of Swedish watch brand Daniel Wellington in South Africa and the face of the Johnson’s Fresh Hydration range. Mihlali has also worked with beauty powerhouses including MAC Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, Inglot, Essence, Revlon and LUX plus fashion and lifestyle brands like Superbalist, Bata Shoes, Beauty Revolution, Bernini and Brutal Fruit. Along with her Daniel Wellington collaboration, Mihlali’s proudest career highlight to date was being on Cosmopolitan’s first-ever selfie cover for their March 2019 Influencer Issue. “Being on the cover of Cosmo was such an honour. To be recognised by this magazine for my craft was a blessing,” she says. However, Mihlali’s most exciting campaign hasn’t launched just yet. She spills some tea: “For now, all I can say is that it’s with a brand that I have a long-term relationship with. I love how they’ve incorporated my story into the campaign and communicated the message in a relatable way rather than just promoting the product that they’re selling.” In Mihlali’s opinion, ‘influencer’ is the best term to describe what she does as a content creator. “The great thing about being an influencer is that you get to be yourself. People follow you because they have a particular interest in you, whether it be your personality or your craft, and brands collaborate with you for you to incorporate their products or services into your

lifestyle to market them,” she explains, adding that the most important thing an influencer should stand for is what they believe in. Touching on the importance of being selective with brand collaborations, Mihlali points out that collaborations that influencers aren’t passionate about will always show through their content. “You won’t be as enthusiastic when sending out a message and this will confuse your audience,” she says. There are a number of bigname brands that Mihlali aspires to work with in the future, one of the main ones at the moment being Mercedes-Benz. “I love everything that the brand embodies.” E @mihlaliindamase D @mihlalii_n Q @mihlalii_n

On her signature look... My signature makeup look is a neutral eye and bold red lip with a nude manicure and a spritz of Pure Musc For Her by Narciso Rodriguez or Chanel Chance. In winter, my go-to outfit is a pair of jeans, a turtleneck sweater, a long, dramatic scarf and boots with my all-time favourite handbag, my Louis Vuitton Neverfull. My handbag essentials are hand cream, wet wipes, lip-gloss, sunglasses and an iPhone charger. When travelling, I always have foundation – either Essence Insta Perfect Liquid Makeup or Estée Lauder Double Wear – concealer, setting spray, mascara and lip balm on hand. On her favourite Jozi hangouts... My favourite restaurant is Gemelli in Bryanston – I’m obsessed with their pastas! I also like the newly opened Saint in Sandton, especially for drinks in the gorgeous bar area. When it comes to shopping, Sandton City is my go-to because they have everything from affordable to high-end brands. I love shopping local too though – Style Alert SA (check them out on Instagram) and Gelideli Fashion House both have amazing on-trend garments. If I were to ever move out of Joburg, it would only be because I’d been given the opportunity to live and work abroad for a few years. Hello Joburg • June 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

CANNABIS FOR...

EVERYTHING?

Sparks will fly when you enter this jazz and blues clu Welcome to the ABCs of CBD

Cannabis-infused beers, E-liquid and more If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably heard your friends or colleagues throwing around the words ‘CBD’ and ‘THC’. You’ve probably also noticed marijuana-infused beers like Durban Poison beer or E-cigarette liquids like CBDfx creeping into your social gatherings. The truth is that the cannabis industry is one of the fastest-growing areas in herbal medicine and has amassed a pretty substantial following of loyal believers in its benefits.

Both CBD and CBD have health benefits, but they also pose certain risks and should be used with caution just like any other drug. CBD has fewer health risks and added medicinal properties, which is why it’s more popular as a wellness supplement. Given the increasing popularity of medical cannabis, breeders have also started growing strains that contain a higher CBD to THC ratio to minimise psychoactive effects and rather focus on healing benefits.

As laws around cannabis changed in South Africa, so did the opinions of mainstream consumers and, as a result, the CBD craze was born. Avantgarde South Africans have swiftly jumped on the European and North American bandwagon, adding dagga bits and extractions into just about everything, from coffee and lip balm, to chocolate and bath oils. But what exactly are these products and extracts?

What the law states The laws around CBD related medical products are still unclear in South Africa and the effects on health-related problems and illnesses have not yet been thoroughly researched. As with any new wellness trend, we suggest you do your own research and use products responsibly.

CBD versus THC – know the difference! Marijuana has more than 100 different chemical compounds that all effect the human body differently. The two primary compounds are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

22

CBD has no psychoactive effects, while THC is the compound that’s responsible for getting you ‘high’. The effects of THC include relaxation, altered senses like taste and smell, fatigue, hunger and reduced aggression. On the other hand, CBD is said to cause no mental side effects, but rather contain properties that help with pain, inflammation, autoimmune conditions, depression, nausea, anxiety, ADHD and heart disease, to name just a few. Weed is now (sort of) legal and there’s been an influx of cannabis-infused products. Some promise to give you just a light buzz, while others claim they can relieve anxiety or even cure cancer. The question is: just how beneficial are these products really? We did a little exploring.

LA PETITE MAISON Channel Parisian flair at Melville’s new maison

Many assume that the best fine-dining restaurants in Joburg are of the stuffy French sort – that can’t be further from the truth. While there are plenty of Gallic classics, there are also downto-earth high-class spots. When a trip to France is impossible, head to La Petite Maison – just be careful not to blink as you drive past or you might miss it!

Tyeya worked at the Michelin-starred La Fiorida near Lake Como in Italy while Tim served his time in the kitchens of Greenhouse at The Cellars-Hohenort and Luke Dale-Roberts’ Test Kitchen. Their petite menu and wine list at Le Petite Maison focus on quality ingredients, seasonal suitability, natural methods and provenance. Each course on the map that is the menu represents a region. risotto. Brimming with butter and topped with Cape Malay spiced prawns and golden calamari coils, it’s wonderfully rich. For the main event, it’s a toss-up between the Kleinmond sous vide octopus and the Magaliesburg pork belly. The octopus, served with orange, Peruvian tomato pickle, couscous and harissa, is a feast for the eyes and palate – it’s a tantalising interplay between sweet and savoury. In the pork belly dish, complemented by slices of fresh fig and a glistening star aniseinfused demi-grace sauce, crispy skin gives way to slow-cooked strands of melt-in-your-mouth tender belly meat. Both dishes are cooked to perfection, hence why it’s hard to choose. Dessert isn’t up for discussion – order the irresistible Coffee Bay tiramisu with layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers and a rich, velvety mascarpone cream. You won’t be sorry! We highly recommend the wine pairing option, in which lesser-known grape varietals and small, independent new winemakers elevate what’s on your plate in every course. Three courses costs R550 with wine or R400 without, while five courses with wine is R800 or R550 without. For an extra-special spoil, splash out on the sevencourse tasting menu that will set you back R1100

ocated along the hustle and bustle of 7th Street, La Petite Maison is a teeny tiny sliver of a restaurant dressed up with inky blue walls, lush greenery, velvet banquettes and burnt orange cocktail chairs. It’s so narrow it feels like a railway carriage and can seat no more than 20 diners, but considering the rise in speakyeasy bars’ concepts and Instagrammable eateries, it’s clear that the off-the-plate experience is now just as important to diners as what they’re eating. This new French-inspired bistro owned by high-flying chef Tyeya Ngxola and friend and fellow Alma (one of the world’s premier cooking schools) graduate Timothy Stewart ticks all the boxes of today’s dining culture.

chef OF THE MONTH

Tapas: small in size, but – when done well – enormous on flavour. And Joburg’s hooked on the stuff – just ask chef Beatrix Thornhill. Spanish-style eating has never been more popular in the City of Gold, with sharing plates of kataifi-wrapped halloumi, herbed tempura artichoke hearts and deepfried squid fast becoming the new three-course meal at EB Social Kitchen & Bar.

The menu at EB Social Kitchen & Bar is a mix of cuisines. Each dish delivers a universal undertone with a South African twist – think homemade fish cakes served as tacos on toasted tortillas and rooibos crème brûlée with a lavender shortbread finger. Because our kitchen has a classic Josper oven, patrons can also look forward to a variety of smokey, fire-flavoured ingredients. But what really gives the restaurant an wow factor is the spectacular view! I’m happiest when I’m alone in the kitchen at 05h00. It’s during this time that I get creative planning dishes with the ingredients on hand. I enjoy listening to gospel while doing this – it inspires me to start the day with new ideas

he restaurant industry is nothing new to Marcel and Marc Cronje, whose father sent them to work in restaurants like Mimmos and Ocean Basket from the age of 12. In 2016, Marc joined Marcel at the restaurant he was working at, but that didn’t last long as the twins quickly realised that they wanted to open their own restaurant. After much conceptualising, The Royale took form. The Cuban theme was inspired by Marcel’s love for salsa dancing, which led him to think of Cuba, and the design was executed with the help of Ground Up Construction, Urban Eight Architectural Design & Management and close friend Petru Keyter. When it comes to the food offering, the twins are all hands on deck. They have the final say before any experiments make it onto the menu, which they try and change up at least four times a year. Their all-time favourite dishes are the Cuban Sandwich – a true classic finished with sweet mustard – and the Sloppy Joe Empanadas filled with beef and onion. Looking forward, Marcel and Marc are currently working on an exciting new venture, a 1950s New York/Chicago-style classic cocktail and oyster bar. HOTSPOT:

SOCIAL PARKWOOD Good fun ... yet slightly disreputable

S

pain’s tradition of kicking back with a glass of wine and small plates of tapas has become a welcome culinary fixture here in Joburg thanks to the city’s bustling, hurried lifestyle. Social Parkwood, the new spot on Parkwood Corner, dishes out rustic morsels like braai broodjies with hummus and chakalaka dip, plump sriracha grilled prawns and, best of all, golden beer-battered avocado fritters. It’s our new favourite place to share a lusty spread of small plates! The casually cool neighbourhood spot has taken the attitude of a shebeen and the essence of a canteen and flipped it on its head to bring you a colourful, contemporary African oasis in the heart of Parkwood. It’s neither what you’d expect a shebeen nor a canteen to be, but isn’t that what makes it fun?

Sneak into the space along the counter before selecting a cocktail like the F’Rosé made with frozen rosé or the Ho Lee Fook shaken with mandarininfused vodka. Then, supplement a dish of tapas touchstones like veggie spring rolls or jalapeño chilli poppers with a vivacious salted lamb rib or fritto misto number. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to drink as the clock hits five or you’re bar-hopping on the trendy corner, make a beeline for Social Parkwood – the clue is in the name! Lerato's CORNER A candid review … BA-PITA

I

f you’re a Gen X born and bred in Joburg, you’ve heard of Ba-Pita, the Middle Eastern takeaway joint that used to exist on Rockey Street in Yeoville. If you worked as a journalist, artist or musician in the late 80s or early 90s, you probably even ate there. Twenty years after shutting their doors when the area fell into disrepair, Ba-Pita has made a comeback at the top of Melville’s 7th Avenue. I was recently craving falafel, couscous and kebabs, so decided to check them out. A friend and I arrived at the bright and breezy new Ba-Pita for an early Saturday lunch and opted to sit in the courtyard at the back of the restaurant as opposed to inside, from where you can look out onto the busy street. The space was bigger than we expected with lots of seating, wooden furniture and vaulted ceilings. The décor is fresh and funky – think mosaic tiles, hanging plants and Moroccan lanterns. We kicked off our meal by both ordering a Buchu Gin & Tonic, which is available on tap along with Darling Slow Lager and Gypsy Mask. It was a tough call between a G&T or sangria, which is served by the jug. While this isn’t the type of place I’d order a glass of wine, it’s worth mentioning that the wine list is hand picked and the mark-ups aren’t too unreasonable. I liked that all options are available by the glass. We then ordered up a couple of small plates – grilled halloumi with muhammara dip, falafel balls on hummus, and cumin- and coriander-infused chicken kebabs – as well as a falafel laffa (a flatbread rolled and stuffed with falafel, fresh cucumber, tomato, grilled aubergine and tahini). The presentation of the food was nothing special, but the bright blue and orange plates that it came on made each dish Instagram-worthy in its own way. More importantly, the flavours were all on point – I would’ve liked the dishes to be a little more fragrant, but we could taste that everything was made in-house with love and that kinda made up for it. My favourite dishes were the wholesome falafel balls (smear them thickly with hummus for extra indulgence) and the unapologetically sticky chicken kebabs that were done in a lightly spiced satay sauce. We barely had space for dessert, but decided to end the meal with one of the oldest sweet dishes in the world, a small bowl hand-crafted Turkish delight, which was deliciously chewy with an exotic rose flavour. The small plates paired with a quirky setting, super-laidback vibe and swish service make Ba-Pita a place that ticks all the boxes for a casual meal with mates, a cool first date or even a family outing. If it were slightly more affordable, I’d probably be a regular at lunchtime (so it’s probably a good thing that it’s not!). Then again, the new Ba-Pita is by no means the tiny takeout spot it once was – today, it’s more like a Middle Eastern gem!

KEEP IT COSY The wines we’re hot for when the temperature drops

It’s time to break out your yoga pants, digital Yule log, toasted marshmallows and low-hanging Game of Thrones references – winter is coming! The forecast is looking bright with multitasking whites, enveloping reds and deliciously optimistic bottles. Cancel your plans and hunker down with our favourite wines for rich cuisine and evenings with Netflix.

Glenelly Lady May 2013 We can hear you now: “Thanks for the rec, Captain Obvious!” Still, just how awesome Glenelly’s flagship estate wine is this time of year bears repeating. Elegant and complex, fresh and vibrant, this is pedigree Stellenbosch cabernet sauvignon at its very best! The wine develops flavours of cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, touch of graphite and delicate spicy plum. It’s deeply coloured, perfectly balanced and displays an exquisite structure with velvety tannins and fantastic ageing capacity. The best part is that you never really know it – you just continuously rediscover it. We love drinking this cab sav in winter when we’re eating foods like duck, brisket, pepper steak, mashed potatoes and lentils, accumulating mass for hibernation. Fairview Viognier You’re probably wondering why on earth we’d recommend a classically flowery white wine in winter. While this Viognier (pronounced ‘veeown-yay’) is known for its honey and stone fruit flavours and typical spring blossom floral aromas, it’s also surprisingly versatile. And, let’s be honest: by the end of June, you’re probably going to need springtime in a glass. Bright and gold in colour, you’ll enjoy a rich, complex palate with layers of waxy honeycomb, apricots and orange followed by a charming creamy finish. If you love to brood over bolder whites like chardonnay, this is definitely something you’ll like to swirl! It works with a wide variety of seafood, roasted or grilled chicken, pork, spicy flavours and Asian cuisine. Our favourite winter dish to sip it with is a Malay curry with delicate spice and dried fruits. R105 from K www.fairview.co.za

Vrede en Lust Lady J Syrah 2012 ‘Tis the season for something rugged. Best described as showing clean fruit, ripe cherries, plums and white pepper on the nose, this appealing shiraz is a wine that’s the perfect example of how fruit from two different terroirs can harmonise to showcase the best of both regions. The shiraz grapes from Simonsberg-Paarl showcase violet and plums, while the Elgin grapes bring in a darker character. Fresh and intricate with smooth tannins on the palate, you’ll pick up spice, leather, some crushed herbs and a savoury finish that confirm the promise of this elegant wine. It isn’t for the faint heart or palate, but it’ll warm you up in a hurry! It goes well with grilled meats, venison, boar, leather club chairs and snow banks or simply biltong and a rugby game on TV. Joburg has chilly winters, but we take to the colder weather with gusto. While it’s tempting to spend the duration of June to September indoors, it’s far more fun to rug up and head to a night market – good tunes, the sizzle of saucepans as they hit the open flames, mulled wine, mouth-watering aromas wafting through the air and people jostling for a spot at a communal table (okay, that bit we can do without!). Jozi’s winter night markets make the most of the single-digit temperatures.

If you really want to tell your merlots from your malbecs, head to Publik Wine Bar, a mere 1.2km from the Rosebank Gautrain station. Natural or biodynamic, Old World or New, this neighbourhood wine bar focused on more unusual and interesting wines is great for a drop of the good stuff. OF THE MONTH

Our top tips for a next-level G&T:  U se a wide-rimmed glass to bring out the full aromas of the gin.  A lways choose a high-quality gin and a tonic with a low sugar content.  F ill your glass with lots of ice – it will keep your drink perfectly chilled without diluting the gin.  L ook at the botanicals used in the gin and choose a garnish that will complement or enhance those ingredients.

Limited Edition Mirari Celebration Gin

Let the celebration begin! About: Mirari Celebration Gin is a perfectly balanced gin that’s been handcrafted from a stellar selection of natural herbs, spices and fruits. Think a mixture of succulent Macedonian juniper berries, tart grapefruit, blood orange, sweet chamomile, liquorice root and floral saffron along with other fine botanicals. Not only is this gin beautiful to look at with its delicate touch of gold flakes, but with only 5,000 bottles available on the market it also serves as the perfect exclusively fashionable accomplice to any celebration. Gin has never looked better! Cool fact: The gorgeous touch of gold pays homage to Joburg’s history and the fact that the distillery is the first of its kind to be established in the City of Gold. Time Anchor uses real 23ct gold – instead of a composite gold – leaf making this bottle truly remarkable. The concept of the latest edition is a whimsical tribute to South African craft and artistry and embodies true celebration in every context. How it’s made: The gin is distilled by Time Anchor Distillery in a still named Charlotte and is created from all-natural botanicals in a mix of cold maceration and vapour infusion. Flavours: Plump, sweet and piney juniper flavours are the main characteristics of this spirit. Refreshing citrus notes develop onto the palate emerging along with a soft touch of saffron and a lovely, silky-coated mouthfeel.

Hangover cure: Had one too many G&Ts last night? Feeling a little worse for wear? This gin makes for the perfect twist on a classic Bloody Mary AKA a killer hangover cure – and the best is you can throw this together the next morning with little effort and items you already have in your kitchen. All you need is a tot of Mirari Celebration Gin, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt, pepper and a stick of celery. Available from: Norman Goodfellows and Makro for R390. arts&culture WHO STAGED IT BETTER?

When film and theatre don’t always translate

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied.

Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury in the 2018 biographical flick left die-hard Queen fans in tears and awakened a new love for the rock singer’s music amongst generations born long after The Live Aid concert of 1985. Now, the Bohemian Rhapsody sing-along experience is coming to Mzansi for four shows only at the Teatro and given the hype, tickets are bound to sell out fast. We’re doing a little reflection for those generations who are yet to experience some of the big show hits that have translated beautifully on stage and those that have, well, fallen flat. Dreamgirls Oh fam, there just ain’t no way to top Honey Bee and Jenny H (#soz). Let’s be honest: this rags-to-riches story about an up-and-coming 60s girl group that debuted on Broadway in 1981 was eclipsed the moment the 2006 movie version hit the screens. The reality is that no matter how great your cast or ensemble is, once the likes of Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson put their stamp on something, it’s pretty hard for anyone else to replicate a version worth talking about. When Dreamgirls came to Jozi stages, it was well supported and there were some rave reviews – but in our opinion, there’s just no topping the movie and its soundtrack.

baby lion cubs and talking warthogs, but only when South African producer and composter Lebo M arranged and performed the stage production did the hair on the back of theatre-goers’ necks stand up. Capturing the spirit of Africa with soaring vocals and incredible stage production, the live musical of The Lion King gets props for one of the better (if not best) adaptations of the original. PS: How many Gen Z’s even watch old Disney movies anymore? We mean – was there really anything before Frozen?

The Color Purple We’ll admit that this is a tough one. Both the movie and the stage adaptations have moved audiences in unexpected ways. With Danny The Lion King Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Now, here’s a show that came alive on stage Winfrey at the helm of the film released in for local audiences in an unprecedented 1985, it’s a seriously hard act to follow. The way 20 years ago (and still today). Walt power of the original cast’s performances Disney’s 1994 animated movie version won plenty of awards and the hearts of the elicited warm and fuzzy feelings for critics, but what award-winning director

Janice Honeyman got so right about the South African installment of the musical was the ability to tell the story beyond the big personalities. The unforgettable story of a woman who, through the love of other strong women, is able to triumph over hardship. PS: rumour has it that there’s another round of shows in 2020. By Frank-Lee in the front row Yes, Chicago the musical came back to the Mzansi stage, but actor South African Craig Urbani made the biggest comeback of the day.

W

ell, my fellow thespian fans, let me call a spade a razzle dazzle and tell you upfront that the most recent run of Chicago the musical at The Teatro certainly didn’t disappoint. The choreography, music and costumes brought the story of murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery to life with a serious bang and dash of laughter. With a slightly different stage arrangement with the band taking centre stage this time around, the show left little room for the performers to flap and sway. Perhaps strange at first for theatre traditionalists, but the composition truly made the soundtrack the hero of the show, forcing the performers to get creative and go big or go home – and big they went! Award-winning musical director Bryan Schimmel (Jersey Boys, Annie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert) lead the 11-piece orchestra like the musical magician that he is, interacting with the cast seamlessly and playfully. We must tip our hats off to comeback kid Craig Urbani who took the lead as ruthless lawyer Bill Flynn. The actor shot to fame playing musical prodigy Buddy Holly at home and then on London’s West End. He then went on to play Alec Matthews in Isidingo followed by a decade-long hiatus from the stage due to his battle with alcohol. Since playing this role 10 years ago, Urbani has completely turned his life around. Other great performances included Samantha Peo (Cabaret, West Side Story, Strictly Come Dancing) as Velma Kelly and Ilse Klink (Mamma Mia!, Show Boat, Isidingo) as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton. Well-cast, slick and sexy, Chicago can come back any day!

OLD SCHOOL COOL An 80s and 90s revival While this month’s issue celebrates Generation Z, it seems fitting to highlight that the older crew can still make waves. Don’t believe us? This month’s entertainment showcases how old school is now the new cool. Take a look at these new old faves to enjoy during your downtime!

The new season of everyone’s favourite weird series drops on Netflix on 4 July. You now have a month to catch up on seasons one and two of this American sci-fi horror series that follows a group of pre-teen kids as they navigate the 80s while having to deal with some, well, stranger things, in their tiny American town. We don’t know much about the new season yet, other than that it will see a time jump to 1985 and our favourite young heroes will likely be moving away from playing Dungeons and Dragons and more towards wrestling with the changes that puberty brings… and no doubt there will be monsters.

46

Play: Mortal Kombat Mortal Kombat was a video game that was released in late 1992. Dominating arcades everywhere, the button-mashing fighting game encouraged you to use a selected fighter with special abilities and fight to the death. Known for its violent nature, it became one of the most popular game of the generation and now, it seems, ours too. A new iteration of the popular franchise has dropped – Mortal Kombat 11 is now available for your PlayStation or XBox. The story is still the same: you choose a character, hit the buttons as fast as you can and hopefully you beat your opponent. More than 15 years on, expect the violence to be more vivid and the characters far more realistic. Hello Joburg • June 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Be influenced: Kween B Apparently being an ‘influencer’ is now a coveted career path by Generation Z, but it isn’t just a bunch of 20-something-year-olds posing in their underwear on Instagram! Joburg has its own oldschool-can-also-be-cool influencer. Sharon, a 40-something mother and businesswoman who blogs at kweenb.co.za, has chosen to share the insights, loves and struggles of a woman approaching 50. It’s an interesting take on an oversaturated world of young lifestyle bloggers with pretty pictures. If you’re looking for a new view, visit her blog.

Watch: Toy Story 4

On 21 June, Woody, Buzz and the rest of Andy’s favourite toys will jump onto the big screen again and entertain a whole new generation of kids with their silly antics. Can you believe that the original Toy Story was released in 1995? While this story will likely see a similar narrative – as the toys struggle to come to terms with being toys – there’s no doubt the characters we love will creep into the hearts of our kids as well. For the older crowd, this might be a nice way to reminisce about your younger years and chuckle about how the movies made back then just seem to last.

NOTA life STRICTLY BUSINESS! of leisure at the Radisson Blu Sandton For many, the words ‘corporate’ and ‘business’ come to mind when thinking of Radisson Blu hotels. However, when it comes the Radisson Blu in Sandton, this shouldn’t be the case.

From check-in to checkout, the smiley service that we received from all the staff was simply top-notch. We’ll get into that in a bit though – let’s chat food first! Checking in just after midday seemed fitting so that we could head straight to Vivace Restaurant for lunch. We were welcomed by a clean and contemporary space with pops of green, modern light fixtures and wooden floors plus awe-inspiring views of Sandton.

48

The menu offers a selection of scrumptious vegetarian, seafood and meat dishes with an international flair. To start, we were brought fresh Italian bread and olives – perfect amusebouche in our opinion. We then settled on a variety of starters to share, including the deep-fried calamari, tempura artichoke hearts and roasted beetroot, which made for a great tapas-style meal. Our only complaint was that we couldn’t try a bit of everything on the menu! We’ll definitely be back to try the cilantro and Hello Joburg • June 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

lime prawn stir-fry, Thai green chicken curry and ricotta gnocchi though. After lunch, we soaked up some sun on the glorious pool deck with a cocktail in hand and then headed to AE Spa for a Hydramemory Facial and a massage, which left us feeling ohso-relaxed and ready for a cosy movie night in. When settling into our beautifully minimalistic suite for the evening, the super-fast Wi-Fi was well appreciated. And remember what we mentioned about the service? The lovely guest relations team had even left a sweet surprise of hot Milo, chocolate brownies and a bottle of red wine in our room to ensure that we’d enjoy our night in. Room service and movies was on the agenda, so of course we had to order the ‘Movie Night’ option on the room service menu. A classic cheeseburger, bucket of popcorn, jelly babies and soft drink or Castle Lite – what more could you ask for? Breakfast at Vivace Restaurant the following morning saw us dig into a buffet of dreams that had every breakfast food you can think of. It was the perfect start to our day before a seamless checkout! #HELLORECOMMENDS

THE INDABA HOTEL

Wining and dining and a stayover spoil Last month, Hello Joburg Magazine teamed up with The Indaba Hotel, Conference Centre & Spa in Fourways and hosted 12 of Joburg’s top lifestyle influencers at an intimate #HelloRecommends event like none other for them to experience the revamped hotel and its brand-new bistro.

T

he event was attended by the likes of Steve Steinfeld of The Joburg Foodie, vlogger Jessica van Heerden and socialite Tshepi Vundla. Guests arrived at the charming hotel on a Thursday afternoon to check in and relax before an evening of wining and dining at the spankingnew Bistro 407, which honours the hotel’s countryside roots. Steeped in history as one of the oldest accommodation options in Fourways, the hotel wowed everyone from the minute they stepped inside – but little did they know that this was only the beginning of the surprises.

Words Candice May Images Crystal Muller.

The evening kicked off at the spruced-up Courtyard Bar, an outdoor café set below the tall trees of Joburg’s urban forest centred around an original farmhouse feature, a sweet 1950s-era fountain. Here, guests were treated to a gin tasting by Inverroche Distillery, where they were taken through an educational and exciting journey through the endless world of gin with the soothing sounds of a live saxophonist playing in the background. The real fun began when guests were taken through to Bistro 407 to tuck into a six-course degustation menu with wine pairing. Fun fact? The bistro’s name is a nod to the history of the hotel, as the property began its life located on plot 407 of the original farm, Zevenfontein – and you can bet that more heritage commemoration can be found in its food and drink offering! The meal began with sesame-coated smoked sirloin, followed by chicken samoosas, wild mushroom and sun-dried tomato risotto, grilled Scottish salmon and pan-fried lamb noisette. It ended on a sweet note with crème caramel accompanied by deep-fried custard, a strawberry macaron and chantilly cream. Some guests went on to sample some of Bistro 407’s signature cocktails like the 407 Lavender Piña Colada and the 407 Toasted Marshmallow Daiquiri, which features decadent toasted marshmallow flavouring and white chocolate sauce. They then returned to their rooms for a restful

night’s sleep and enjoyed a fresh breakfast buffet at Epsom Restaurant the following morning. The influencers took home gifts from NUXE, Sorbet, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Catrice, Essence, Sexy Socks, The French Lemon, FINO Cosmetics, SKN Logic, Garlict, Tinkies, Twix as well as gifts from the hotel’s Mowana Spa and Bistro 407. It’s safe to say that they were well and truly spoilt! With panoramic views of the breath-taking untouched wilderness surrounding the nature reserve, you’ll be able to enjoy and focus on the little things like the elephant shrew, scrub hare and rock hyrax. You’ll also be able to take in the most mesmerising sunsets! The suites are skillfully constructed to integrate with the natural sandstone formations – if you’re brave, be sure to book one of the open-air suites in which the milky way is your ceiling. THE MILLENNIAL MINDSET

How to engage the emerging generation  The millennial generation – that’s anyone born between 1981 and 1996 (ages 23 to 38 in 2019) – is taking over the workforce. By 2020, they’re expected to make up half the global workforce (crazy, right?). What this means for the meetings and events sector is that organisers need to make conferences millennial friendly. Here’s how to leave a lasting impression on younger attendees at your events, written by a millennial with tips from experts.

54

Make the hallway as appealing as the ballroom  Networking spaces adjacent to the conference venues are more important now than they were two years ago. Conferences that get Hello Joburg • June 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

good at connecting people and ideas will win over next-generation attendees, so make sure you build in dedicated networking time, activities (think exploring local attractions and volunteering) or downtime where attendees can connect. Keynote speakers usually drive registration, but moving forward the opportunities will play a bigger role in millennials’ decision to attend an event. Create Instagram-worthy moments  We’d be lying if said we didn’t attend events just so we have something to share on social media (well, mostly). Aesthetically-pleasing, high-impact décor, selfie stations and prominently displayed event hashtags have never been more important. Venue design, good lighting and ambience are other elements to consider when it comes to inspiring attendees to share their photos. One way to create

an Insta moment is with visually creative food offerings – the key is to think of new and exciting combinations. Believe it or not, potato chips and champagne like Veuve Clicquot go great together!  Be a problem-solver with charging stations  We love interacting with our mobile devices at events using social media and apps, so low battery power can be a major problem. By having charging stations at your event, you’re solving this problem and proving that you know your audience. Why not consider creating comfy lounges with integrated charging stations? This could be fantastic for networking as well. If you opt for lockable charging stations, attendees will be able to lock up their phones and walk around the event while they charge.

Words Candice May Images Supplied

Ace the first impression with speedy Wi-Fi  Understand that we cannot, under any circumstances, be without technology. First impressions count, and they’re especially important at a conference. The single most important thing that millennial attendees value is quick access to Wi-Fi and fast connection speed. Test the bandwidth of your coverage to ensure it can accommodate every attendee without delaying connections – and don’t even think about making your attendees pay for Wi-Fi if you want to avoid millennial upheaval.

The New

DARLING OF DESIGN Interiors, accessories, floors … if it’s yellow, it belongs here!

It’s time to bid a fond farewell to the subdued tones of millennial pink and celebrate the latest shade beloved by the trendy tribe. Bold, exciting, surprisingly versatile and – dare we say – cooler than its predecessor, Gen Z yellow is easy to incorporate into your existing décor. Here’s how to take it from the runway straight into your home for a burst of happiness all year round.

Paint your front door in the sunshiney hue If the thought of bright yellow walls is slightly too daunting, then a statement front door – one of the hottest trends of the year – is the next best thing. Add a fresh coat of yellow lacquer paint to your home’s most visible item to complement red brick perfectly, provide an eye-catching contrast to adjacent greenery and create a warm, welcoming entrance. Cheery yellow shades can take any boring item and turn it into something special – front doors, staircases, desk chairs and vintage chair frames.

Take your kitchen from meh to modern Shades of yellow in the kitchen is hardly a new concept, whether in the form of a bowl of lemons or in unexpected places like the ceiling. Use it in fresh ways by pairing dining chairs in a muted shade of yellow with a Persian rug or replacing your kitchen bar stools or chairs with a yellow punch. style fridge, Dualit NextGen toaster, KitchenAid stand mixer or Le Creuset Dutch oven. Add a zesty pop to your living room Look for zingy yellow in an area rug, throw pillows and artwork to add instant energy to your living room. Pairing saturated hues with contrasting charcoal grey and black furnishings (which are always on-trend) will give it a contemporary look. If you like to go big, use the colour in a large statement piece of furniture on a medium like velvet to bring a classic, timeless feel to the piece. A maximalist might dress up the room with additional prints, while a minimalist could just add a pillow or two. Accessorise with yellow on a smaller scale Subtle hints of yellow – think a quilt, lumbar pillows or a bedside bouquet – can make a cohesive colour statement together in your bedroom. This colour takes a much bolder tone against a black wall than when paired with a white wall. You can also try a daffodil-coloured headboard, lamps with yellow bases or golden curtains. To extend the permanent place of happiness to your bathroom, swap out bath towels, pick up a bold patterned bath rug or snag a funky soap dispenser.

Go all out with beigey-yellow walls Most designers recommend using yellow in small doses, but you can, of course, go all in and paint your walls. If you decide to do this, make sure you choose a slightly greyed down version of yellow – look for a shade that appears slightly more beige on the paint chip. Feeling creative? Shades of yellow can also work well as an ombré effect to create a strong but sophisticated accent wall. All you’ll need are three different colours from the same colour family – one light, one medium and one dark.

What ignited your passion for entertainment? I’ve always wanted to be an entertainer and to entertain. I didn’t know that I was naturally funny until I was put in a corner and discovered that humour was my copying mechanism.

meant to comment on everything that happens, whether it’s good or bad. I’ve learnt that keeping quiet is sometimes the best approach. When you express your opinion, people tend to express their opinions about you too, and it isn’t always nice.

What role did social media play in your success? Social media played a huge part in my success. I found a gap in the market and made it work for me. At the time, everyone around me was sticking to traditional media – you know, being a TV or radio presenter. I think I was one of the first artists to use social media in the way I did. People were intrigued by the content I was putting out.

If you could create your own media platform or app, what would it be?   It would be a media platform for young creatives to create and share content the same way I did when I started out.

What social issues do you aim to address on your platforms? Body positivity and being yourself as well as LGBTQ issues. I like to convey the message that we are all equal and have equal rights. Tell us about your favourite collaboration to date. Definitely The Fanta Squad campaign. It’s my second year being a part of it and I love it. We’re a family now!

What’s the most challenging thing about the career path you’ve chosen? Minding my own business. Social media has bred the idea that you’re Hello Joburg • June 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

In your opinon, how does social media affect the teenagers of today? There’s both positive and negative aspects. On the one hand, teenagers are able to make careers out of different platforms and are becoming social media influencers but on the other they are being adult content and peer pressure. Younger generations are being exposed to things that they should be experiencing later in life which isn’t a good or bad thing. It allows us to grow up quickly and learn how to juggle life better.
