BRIEF TITLE

Manchester Book fair.

The Brief Using quotes from Preston and Chantelle’s most recent interviews in OK magazine, take the quotes out of context and produce a book consisting purely of type as image.

Background A book is a set or collection of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment or other various materials, usually fastened together to hinge at one side – but not always.’

Concept/Proposition Reflect upon the literal meaning of the words and what the interviewee intended them to mean.

‘Artist’s books are works of art realised in the form of a book. They are often publishing in small editions – (like the ones being produced for the book fair.) Artists books have employed a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs, concertinas or loose items in boxes.’ Wikipedia.

Also reflect upon the current trends/ styles in popular ‘type as image’. Considerations The style doesn’t have to directly link to the gossipy nature of OK magazine, the quotes are just a starting point.

Mandatory Requirements All work/images should be supported by a range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and notebooks.

BRIEF TITLE

The Guardian.

The Brief

Background

Produce one illustration every week to accompany the ‘Diary of a disappointing daughter’ article and the ‘This column will change your life’ article from The Guardian weekend on a Saturday for 10 weeks.

An image rarely exists out of context. What an image is in response to or the environment it is placed in (or a combination of the two) will define the context.

Considerations Think visually. Consider what is the visual essence of your subject matter (the article) and how to best communicate this. What are the obvious responses? How can you move beyond these? How subtle can you be? Do your ideas operate as a set, series or sequence?

This is clear within editorial illustration/ photography/print making etc...you are responding directly to a body of given text and it will set within a publication (its environment).

Practical Considerations

Mandatory Requirements

There are no media restrictions. You can work photographically, across three dimensions, collage, incoporate print making methods or combine all of these processes...however you will must be able to record these in a two dimensional (flat) form for the final outcomes.

All images should be supported by a broad range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and notebooks.

Target Audience

Deliverables

Readers of The Guardian and its supplements.

10 editiorial illustrations and mock ups showing them in context.

Tone of Voice

Studio Deadline

In keeping with each article.

The final images should be saved alongside the article.

To what extent does subcultural style explain identity? Garry Barker

In the third year I aim to focus much more on image, specifically illustration and type as image and try new styles in an attempt to discover my own and give my portfolio a clearer direction. I will work on improving my photoshop and illustrator skills so that my work is of a higher standard and can be used at different scales without losing quality. I don’t want to focus on working for a set product; I will focus more on the content with the hope that it can then be applied to a wide range of products. As I ultimately want to be freelance, it is going to be important for me to develop contacts who produce work that admire and have a client list that I aspire to have. "Driven by type as image, illustration and design for print with the intention to engage and entertain." Statement of Intent All of the briefs that wrote had an underlying theme that I was interested in, but the four that I have chosen to pursue for the first module will provide me with more portfolio pieces and enable me to focus on developing my software and design for print skills. Each brief focuses on illustration or type as image, the intention being that the outcomes I produce will all be portfolio worthy pieces and provide me with a professional, directed portfolio. Once I have work that I feel fulfils my rationale and umbrella statement, I will put together a digital portfolio and email more freelance artists for feedback and advice and contact other professionals with the hope of getting some live briefs.
