The Beach

The Big Fire

A Christmas Present for Barney Bunny

Rick Sampedro Anna is very happy. It is a beautiful day. A perfect day for the beach. But Nina is not happy. She is on a boat, far from the beach. This is the story of two little girls, and how a place can mean very different things to different people.

Rick Sampedro It is a lovely day in the jungle. The grass is green and the sky is blue. The animals are all happy together. But, what is that? Now the sky is orange and there is smoke. Oh, no! There is a terrible fire. Can the little birds stop the fire? And who can help them?

Maria Cleary It’s Christmas Eve and Mother Bunny is busy getting everything ready for Christmas. The bunnies aren’t helping so she sends them out to play. Barney, the baby bunny, can’t play any of the games. But on Christmas Day Mother Bunny has a special present for him and all her other children.

Meet the Author Hi Rick, why did you become a writer? I want readers to become aware of• important issues. When people are aware of problems they can help change them. Changes can then make a better world for everyone. What other interests do you have? I love music and I have a huge• collection of music. I enjoy listening to different types of music, from classical to rock to punk. I really like songs with good lyrics• and a special message. I also enjoy the beach very much. I live in Galicia, in Spain, with my family. There are great beaches here and we love going swimming. Other passions I have include sport (rugby), travelling, reading and watching films, but my number one passion is my family. They make my life complete and I enjoy every minute I spend with them. What does cultural awareness• mean to you? In my own family we are related to lots of different cultures: Argentinian, Brazilian, English, French, Spanish and even Luxembourgian! I believe growing and raising• your children in a multicultural environment is an absolute bonus•.

Glossary • become aware of: learn about • bonus: positive extra thing • cultural awareness: knowing about other cultures

Holly’s New Friend

In her dream, Holly stops and listens. Lap, lap, lap. What is that noise? It sounds like water. Is it rain? But Holly can see the sky and it is clear and blue. Is it a river? Or a stream•? Lap, lap, lap. Holly walks towards the sound. Lap, lap, lap. The sound is quite loud now. It seems very close. Lap, lap, lap. Holly wakes up and rubs• her eyes. She isn’t dreaming. But she can still hear the sound. Lap, lap, lap. Holly turns on the bedside lamp and sees Eco. He is drinking from her glass of water! He wags his tail, jumps onto the bed and licks her face.

Real characters the readers can identify and grow with.

Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark – and it is so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He pulls on the lead, stops, sniffs•, pulls again, sees a black cat, tries to chase it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet•! He sees a huge dog and tries to play with it (the big dog is quite frightening). And then he chooses a tree. Eco stops, sniffs at the tree trunk, looks up, sniffs again, and makes a decision. This is the perfect place! Holly looks away and waits. When Eco is finished, she takes a plastic bag from her pocket and picks up the dog mess•. Yuck! 36

In the little town of Vevey, in Switzerland, there is a most comfortable hotel, which is seated upon the edge of a clear blue lake. The shore of the lake has a range of establishments• of this type. One of the hotels, however, is famous, being distinguished• from many of its neighbours by an air both of luxury and of maturity. In this region, in the month of June, American travellers are extremely numerous. There is a flitting• here and there of ‘stylish’ young girls, a rustling• of muslin• frills, a rattle of dance music in the morning hours, a sound of high-pitched• voices at all times. You receive an impression of these things at the excellent inn• of the ‘Trois Couronnes’. I hardly know what was in the mind of a young American, who, two or three years ago, sat in the garden of the ‘Trois Couronnes’, looking about him, rather idly, at some of the graceful objects I have mentioned. He had come from Geneva the day before by the little steamer•, to see his aunt, who was staying at the hotel – Geneva having been for a long time his place of residence. But his aunt had a headache – his aunt had almost always a headache – and now she was closed in her room, so that he was at liberty to wander about.

Soon Michael knew every centimetre of the island and he could recognise most of the flowers, birds and animals that lived there. At first he missed• the company of other children, but as time passed he got used to playing by himself. Sarah and George loved their new life. An interview with the author adds interesting information on how the story was written.

Meet the Author Dear Jack, tell us a little about yourself. I was born in the North of England and studied German and Russian at Liverpool University. After graduation• I spent several years travelling around the world, teaching English to finance• the trips. I then went back to England to do a postgraduate• course at London University. I came to Brazil in 1976 and have lived and worked here, teaching and writing, ever since.

When did you start writing stories? My first story was published in 1999. This is now my tenth book.

How do you think of your stories?

rarely take much notice of them. Stories seem to find me, rather than me consciously looking for one. My inspiration often comes from a real event.

What is the message in this story? There are several messages in the story, but I think the most powerful one can be summed up• in the words of the English teacher in the film Dead Poets Society - “Seize• the day! Make your lives extraordinary!” We can

change things. We can live the life we want and realize our full potential.

Have you any other stories planned for the future? Yes, I have a file full of ideas for stories. 38
