COMPANY HISTORY HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
A GLOBAL PLAYER
The company was established by David Turner in 1896, at a time when Ox wagons and sailing ships were the primary modes of transport. Then called Turner and Company (Shipping) (Proprietary) Limited, the business operated as a Customs Clearing agent from the newly established Port of Durban.
Today, Turners Shipping is arguably the biggest privately owned clearing and forwarding company in South Africa. We look beyond our borders and our global network enables us to provide a comprehensive valueadded logistics service on a door-to-door basis, to and from any location in the world.
ACKNOWLEDGING OUR FOUNDING FATHERS In 1909, tragedy struck when David Turner, his wife and five children boarded the luxurious passenger liner the SS Waratah intending to visit their ancestral home in England. The Waratah was the most advanced vessel of its time and was regarded as unsinkable. The ship, with 221 passengers and crew, left Durban on July 26, 1909 but never reached Cape Town. No sign of the ship or its passengers was ever found. David Turner and his family were among those who died at sea. John Cochrane-Murray, who joined the company in 1901, had lost his business partner but decided to keep the business going, retaining the Turner name in memory of his friend. In memory of all those who lost their lives on the Waratah, Turners Shipping has models of the illfated liner displayed at all their offices.

IMPLEMENTATION
We have introduced various measures at our offices which reduce energy consumption. We harvest rainwater, and have a programme to recycle and manage our waste. Looking to the future, we evaluate new technologies as they become available.
Ours is a proven and established project with tangible results. Over the past decade we have gone from concept to implementation and today are enjoying the benefits of the programme. END RESULT The programme started at our Head Office and is being introduced throughout the Group of Companies. Most satisfying is that some of our staff have taken some of these practices into their homes. This initiative gives Turners Shipping a concrete way to practice what we preach, while calling attention to the efforts of our employees to create and enjoy a more environmentally friendly workplace.

AFRICA DEPARTMENT The Africa Department was established in response to increasing trade with the rapidly developing economies and markets throughout Africa. Turners Shipping’s specialised Africa Department is perfectly positioned to allow customers access to all African markets by air, sea, or overland freight. This dedicated freight service offers a complete export package. The range of facilities includes: • • • • • • •

CORE SERVICES PROJECT FREIGHT Turners Shipping Project Freight division is managed by specialised and experienced people who are well versed in out of gauge and abnormal cargo, for air, sea and road freight requirements.
AIR FREIGHT Turners Shipping is an accredited IATA airfreight agent, and operates on a worldwide basis to and from all International and Domestic Air ports in South Africa. Our services include international import and export facilities on an express, standard, charter, and part charter basis.
CUSTOMS BROKERAGE Turners Shipping is an accredited customs broker with SARS and operates from facilities at all the South African ocean and air ports. To accommodate this requirement Turners Shipping provides for a dedicated Customs Entry Department manned by highly qualified personnel. FREIGHT FORWARDING Turners Shipping, in conjunction with our worldwide network partner BDP International, is able to provide freight forwarding options to and from any Global location. Services include Airfreight, Charter, Sea Freight LCL and FCL, Bulk Rail & Road and Project type Shipments.
ROAD AND RAIL Turners Shipping’s dedicated “Transport Desk” handles all landside transport requirements in RSA and for over border shipments. These include consolidations, cross docking, mode selection and load integration.
SEA FREIGHT Turners Shipping provides for a full range of freight services which include full container load (FCL), out of gauge, refrigerated, less than container (LCL) and consolidated Seafreight shipments. TRADE FINANCE Turners Shipping is able to offer a Trade Finance and Logistics package that has been specifically designed for the South African Exporter and Importer.

VALUE ADDED SERVICES AFTER HOURS SERVICE Our key staff are readily contactable on a 24/7 basis. Their cellular phone numbers are made available to Clients should the need for after-hours service arise. CUSTOMS TARIFF CONSULTATIONS South Africa has one of the more complex customs systems in the world. Some of our tariff consultants are experienced ex-customs officers with years of experience both in customs and in the freight forwarding industry. We are therefore well equipped to provide professional advice to ensure our Clients have the competitive edge. DETAILED ESTIMATES We offer a detailed estimate of costs for all cargo handled by us at no additional cost.
DOCUMENT AUDITS We undertake document audits to ensure that our Clients utilise the correct tariff item numbers.
DOCUMENT DELIVERIES On completion of each shipment the relevant shipping documents are delivered by email.
The client simply completes a Request for Estimate document and sends via email which is attended to promptly.
DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE We offer door to door services for imports and exports irrespective of the size of the consignment or the mode of transport.
DISBURSEMENT FINANCING Turners Shipping is able to offer Finance to cover the clearing and forwarding costs either on a short or extended term basis. Terms of up to 120 days may be negotiated subject to credit approval. DISTRIBUTION Strategic alliance partnerships with leading transport organisations provide for full and part load distribution services.
EDI FACILITIES We are able to provide software which gives our Clients access to the many user facilities on our IT System. These include: • Customs Tariffs • Status Reports • Container Packing Calculator • Rates of Exchange and details of shipments being handled by us. It is also possible for Clients to finalise costings on shipments processed by us.

VALUE ADDED SERVICES EXCISE CONSULTANCY Our Excise Division provides specialist services and credible guidance with in-depth knowledge of the relevant industries and legislation. Our supportive infrastructure, dedicated resources and innovative systems promote high levels of tax compliance. A team of highly skilled and qualified professionals provide a dedicated service to clients. This includes: • • • • • •
LOGISTICAL SOLUTIONS In consultation with our Clients, we design logistical solutions and manage them. Our services include full management of all aspects of logistics including warehouse-to-warehouse services. These are backed up by excellent tracking systems providing constant status reports. MARINE INSURANCE Turners Shipping, in partnership with JLT Marine (Pty) Ltd, understands that Marine Insurance is an essential ingredient in all Logistics requirements. In this regard, highly qualified persons are employed to ensure that our Clients receive the best possible advice, service, and rates. IMPORT & EXPORT PERMIT APPLICATIONS As part of our on-going commitment to customer service, we have established a specialised permit office in Pretoria.
Premiums are charged on a per shipment basis which allows for easy and accurate costings.
INTERNATIONAL CROSS TRADE Through our network of overseas offices we are able to provide our Clients with trading opportunities with countries outside South Africa.

VALUE ADDED SERVICES MOBILE SHIPMENT TRACKER Our web application has been developed to allow real-time monitoring of shipments using devices such as smart phones, tablets and computers. The software gathers information from our systems: shipping movement reports, customs, airlines departure and arrivals, providing clients with a level of reporting that has not been possible before.
NEWS BULLETIN Our bulletins keep Clients up to date on relevant local, international, and company news and developments. These bulletins are subscriber-based, and sent via email on a you-need-to-know basis.
PERSONALISED ELECTRONIC ACTIVITY REPORTS Through our comprehensive IT system, we are able to personalise electronic reports regarding our Clients’ import/export activity under our management. For example, the activity report could list Import Permits and reflect the balances and expiry dates of the permits. We can also provide statistics per tariff item imported. All statistical information that we process can be formatted into an easy to understand report for our Clients’ use.
PORT SUPERVISION We provide staff members to supervise Port activities as required by our Clients both locally and abroad.
ONLINE SHIPMENT STATUS REPORTING SYSTEM Turners Shipping’s reporting allows our clients to view real time and historical data on all their shipments. Access to electronic copies of documents are conveniently available for download from the system. PERSONAL CONTACT Turners Shipping encourages our senior management and professional staff members to be available at all times for our clients. We understand that in a fast moving business environment our decision makers and advisors are an integral part of our Client’s success.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT/FORWARDING In conjunction with our international freight forwarding network partnership, we are able to provide for Project Forwarding on a worldwide basis. We employ and manage organisations within the supply chain to ensure that projects are finalised as per the Client’s requirement.

VALUE ADDED SERVICES PURCHASE ORDER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (POMS) The POMS report operates in conjunction with the individual Shipment Status Report, but deals with the organisation’s entire shipment portfolio. Pertinent details are recorded i.e. each shipment’s identification, expected delivery time, actual arrival date and final delivery.
SLA AND SOP Service Level Agreement (SLA) and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) are recommended prerequisites to ensure that service expectations and standards are being met.
This provides the Client with a total shipment update, which is essential for accurate planning purposes. The POMS report is submitted at intervals as required by the Client.
STATUS REPORTS We automatically generate a status report for each shipment, which is then delivered electronically to the Client at regular intervals until final delivery is achieved. This ensures that the client always has reliable and accurate information at their fingertips.
ROAD TRANSPORTATION Through strategic alliances with major Transport Operators in both South and southern Africa, we are able to offer a first class service for our Clients at very competitive rates.
TRAINING ACADEMY The Turners Training Academy aims to provide training and skills development to both employees and Clients, to provide for a holistic understanding of the industry and their role in the logistics supply chain. Many businesses do not have the resources to conduct extensive in-house training, so our Academy is the ideal option. WAREHOUSING Turners Shipping is able to provide both bonded and general warehousing facilities in key locations throughout South Africa.
SCHEDULED CLIENT MEETINGS In addition to regular service follow-up calls, we arrange meetings where all role players are present to discuss progress. Minutes are taken and action points made, followed-up and resolved.
In this regard, we have strategic alliances with specialised companies equipped to handle a full range of storage, handling and distribution requirements.
