trail design in the contours of metropolitan infrastructure Seattle, Washington Thesis Work, 2009-2010 Thaisa Way, Ben Spencer, Joel Loveland This thesis explores the existence and potentials of “vacant and interstitial lands in urban centers as they might participate in the sustainability of the urban landscape, particularly those spaces that emerge at the edges and junctions of metropolitan scaled infrastructure systems. With the intention to maintain design as a minimal intervention in order to retain the character and richness of these places, I have chosen to focus on the potential of the path - as a minimal move, as a thread that weaves together spaces, making place, without erasing existing character and yet offering access of a kind.

design provide support provide compos allow fo

a trail experience that allows for multiple histories and interpretations e spaces for active, loose, engaging play and wonder t and provide local community gathering spaces e through-ways for interurban bicycle commuters e sensitive and supportive responses to natural processes or exposure to and shelter from infrastructure forces

design research of the IBA model in Seattle Seattle, WA Spring 2009 Nicole Huber, Ralph Stern The project presented here is the result of a quarter-long collaborative studio, where students worked in a series of teams to: first, explore and analyze design revitalization strategies used in three German Internationales Bau Ausstellung projects -- IBA Hamburg, IBA Sachsen-Anhalt, and IBA Emscher Park -- and second, to develop comparable strategies for the Duwamish River basin area of Seattle, Washington. The primary focus of this studio was research and analysis, with a focus placed on understanding and graphically communicating the information gathered. The last two weeks of the studio were dedicated to visually exploring theories for revitalization through „quick win“ images and catalogues. Both portions of the studio process are represented here.

DESIGN IN SEATTLE: QUICK WINS ALONG THE DUWAMISH

CONTAINER MARKET

BRIDGE PARK & KAYAK LAUNCH

live art studio Pioneer Square, Seattle Fall 2008 Nancy Rottle, Kathryn Merlino The proposal for this site is to create a small public park in a historic building footprint now occupied by a parking lot, and to open a view from First Ave to the Seattle waterfront by the restructuring a warehouse building that is currently blocking access. To enhance the safety and vitality of the site and of Pioneer Square, the intent of the design elements and the site program are to draw street performers and artists into the area. The flexibility of the design will allow the space to be used on a daily basis by local residents and visitors, as well as providing multiple “stages for intimate public events, concerts, and outdoor movie screenings.

This project is portion of a larger team project with the concept of „Slow City.“ The Heritage Trails of Marsascala are intended to raise awareness and appreciation of the area’s natural and historic features, the trails include those historic sites identified in the Marsascala Action Plan as key heritage sites, but also include additional sites that capture the image of the area and the unique character of the city. A defined trail of 1.5 meter to 2.0 meters in width is provided. This trail is surfaced by packed gravel and lined with a raised ribbon of pressed concrete. In areas where the trail passes along or over existing paved areas, this concrete band helps maintain the continuity of the trail experience.

cactus garden Marsascala, Malta Spring 2008 Tancredi Capatti, Rainer Schmidt This project is portion of a larger team project with the concept of „Slow City“ - a city perceived through contrasts of experience. The approach I took for this particular site is one of minimal programming and flexibility of use that can be recognized in all seasons. The location should act as a quiet but vital space within the neighbourhood and Marsascala, providing space for interaction as well as introspection. To keep the spirit of the site, as well as acknowledge the influence of the nearby sea and agricultural fields, low limestone walls, existing site vegetation, and topographic changes (curving “terraces”) serve as the primary design palette.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam | 2009

king street visioning project Seattle, Washington Winter 2009 Jeff Hou

This studio was geographically centered on the King Street Corridor of Seattle’s International District, and our class collaborated with and presented to staff of the Inter*Im Community Development Association. Students divided into teams for the duration of the project; I worked together in a team whose role it was to oversee and coordinate the studio process. We coordinated with community partners, designed and led community action meetings, developed outreach and educational materials, guided and facilitated the design teams, and initiated a successful competition entry for the International.

A key portion of our work was the facilitation of community meetings, where we developed activities and exercises that were designed to engage the public. Here I present a mapping exercise that I designed and that we used in meeting of community elders and youth. Participants were asked to map their daily routes in the district, through the use of sticker icons representing specific activities or destinations (eg, visiting the doctor, going grocery shopping). We aggregated the maps to produce a map that represents the most heavily used routes in the districts, as well as key nodes and transitions.

CONSTRUCTION + DETAILING

Merit Award | WASLA Student Awards | 2009

lit stair/bench Fall 2008 Daniel Winterbottom, Ben Spencer This assignment called for the detailed exploration of a site detail and materials through the construction of a scale model. I worked on the detail of deck bench for my studio project (see “live art studio). The stair/bench is constructed from reclaimed wood and an asphalt-filled wire and steel cage. The cage was then lit from behind, creating a dappled lighting effect.

shelter art

Winter 2009 Jeff Hou; in collaboration with: S. Ferreter, M. Lewis, E. Berg In the project presented here I worked together with a small group of students to explore the issue of shelter in public space. We designed a series of installations throughout Seattle, Washington, highlighting “leftover” spaces alongside bridges and overpasses through the placement of small, translucent umbrellas. During our first installation along a public bike path we realized that the more serious message we hoped to explore was eclipsed by public reactions to the installations – happiness, amusement, and wonder at the umbrellas’ whimsy and fragility. We explored and enjoyed this new meaning of our project. You are invited to watch a short video of this work on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/ w a t c h ? v = i p P N 0 v Q J a To ) (compiled by S. Ferreter).

CAD case study Seattle, WA Fall 2008 Ben Spencer

These images represent a portion of a site study of the design of the Kreilsheimer Promenade (GGN, Seattle, WA). These were produced during a quarter-long CAD introduction class. This assignment included site documentation, analysis, and interpretation. These images were produced entirely with Bently Microstation. I built a 2-D plan and then 3-D model through on-site measurements and photos, scaled plans, and GIS data.

MAPPING + ANALYSIS

Grand Prize | KSA Intern Competition | 2007

planning on farming ohio? Columbus, Ohio Spring 2007 Jill Clark

The study presented here is one way to identify those counties in Ohio which are in relatively critical need of collaborative strategies to address farmland preservation. Jill Clark (Director, CFFPI) and I developed a model to determine the level of priority for action based on the weighted comparison of the answers to six study questions. These questions were developed according to limitations of reliable, consistent data sources. The study would ideally consider factors such as: acres of preserved farmland, presence or absence of zoning ordinances related to agriculture, and/or local policies which directly impact agricultural practices and lands.

The six questions this study asks are: • Is the county facing high levels of development pressure? • Does the county have a high percentage of prime soils? • What is the average market value of the county’s farmland? • How many AEPP applications have been filed with the ODA? • Does the county have a preservation task force and an agricultural preservation plan? • Is there a local land trust working in the county with a focus on preserving farmland?

DOCUMENTATION

eastlake prep

Seattle, WA Spring 2009 Jamie Fleckenstein, Chad Wichers; in collaboration with P. McCleary, J. Blanco The project presented here is a sample from a non-studio class project in which I collaborated with a small group of classmates to complete a conceptual design and accompanying project documentation for a local preparatory school. In an attempt to represent a “real-world situation, we were given strict guidelines for the project, including number of parking spaces, location of emergency access, and location and scope of primary circulation. We produced a CD set that included sheets for: demolition/TESC; layout plan; grading plan; planting plan; and, specifications for 15 construction details. This page includes details whose design I was responsible for. I produced a digitally rendered perspective for a portion of the design, and also designed our team logo that can be seen in the title block.
