Dear Friends of Hebron: On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your tireless commitment to Hebron Academy. During Patrick Phillips’ initial year as Head of School, Hebron has made tremendous progress in key areas, including higher faculty retention and greater philanthropic support. Just over this past fiscal year, Hebron increased the total amount of money raised, number of donors, and number of first-time donors. In honor of its 50th reunion, the Class of 1972 set a new bar for class fundraising as it raised over half a million dollars exceeding their goal in just over six months to establish the Class of 1972 Center for Academic Excellence at Hupper as well as the Hebron Independent School Fellows program. This effort and its outstanding result represents the ideal collective dedication in providing an exceptional and highly individualized educational experience that prepares our students for success in higher education and beyond. As we near the completion of a year-long strategic planning process, we wish to continue and expand this positive momentum. Our strategic plan will underscore Hebron’s clear needs and optimize its significant potential. We will be bold as we move forward to fulfill our most important short and long-term objectives, from leading educational, residential, and athletic facilities to increasing a robust endowment supporting both our talented students and faculty. Throughout my first year at Hebron, I have enjoyed the opportunity to speak with dozens of alumni, parents, and past parents. I have learned about a wide range of experiences, from Hebron in the 1940’s, prior to the arrival of Claude Allen, to the adventures of the Class of 2023, our newest alumni who are now in their first year of college. It has been a privilege to hear so many Hebron stories. I have gotten a window into how Hebron has changed and evolved over the last century. All of these stories highlight a common theme: Hebron is a powerful force of education, connection, and lifelong friendships. Hebron has changed the lives of those who have spent time here, most often in a positive and enduring way. Whether it was four years or just a single year, Hebron graduates emerge stronger, with the confidence and competence to succeed in whatever comes next. It is these personal accounts that make me excited and optimistic about our future. Thank you for the vital role you play in sustaining and elevating Hebron Academy. This school continues to change lives because you continue to pay it forward with your generous time, talent, and financial resources. Why I Give SUE HADLOCK ’75 Adrift during her freshmen and sophomore years of public high school, Sue Hadlock ’75 admits she lacked direction and focus. Concerned about their daughter’s lack of joy in learning, her parents searched for alternatives. “My great parents saw that Hebron Academy might provide opportunities that would engage and motivate me,” she says, “It was the total package, and what I needed at the time.” She fondly recalls skiing, field hockey, horseback riding, new friends, and teachers who recognized her potential, engaged her interests, and challenged her to explore her talents and develop her skills. “Thanks to Bill Hiss, I learned to write,” Sue says. Today Sue is among the Hebron Academy graduates and supporters who are consecutive-year donors ensuring that the rewards of a Hebron education are extended to future students. Having experienced the dedication, scholarship and community that fostered her success, Sue now gives annually, and has for 39 consecutive years. “I want to support the school that did such a great job of supporting me.”

Leadership Gifts Hebron’s 1804 Leadership Society honors those alumni, family, and friends who have contributed $1000 or more to the Academy within a single fiscal year to bolster the operations of the school. Hebron relies on the generous gifts of these donors, and it celebrates their vision and faith in the mission of the Academy. The 1804 Leadership Society is composed of five donor recognition categories and a sixth one intended for young alumni. CENTER FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE at Hupper
Vision The Class of 1972 Center for Academic Excellence at Hupper is a place where all students, faculty, academic coaches, and tutors can gather inclusively for the purpose of enhancing their learning experience. Through equitable, innovative, and personalized approaches to learning, the Center helps every Hebron student learn in ways that work best for their individual journey.
HEBRON’S TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Hebron’s mission is to educate a stronger and more independent student: one who is aware of their strengths and challenges. Students learn to manage their academic work, advocate for themselves, and access academic tools best-suited for their success. While the Academic Guidance Center (AGC) has been the program driving this commitment, Hebron aspires to expand its academic support programming to serve more students. The Center will build on this mission and continue Hebron’s tradition of academic excellence.
OUTCOMES • Expands the Academic Guidance Center (AGC) and academic support programs, including teaching staff and resources; • Repurposes Hupper for highest and best use, in full alignment with the school’s strategic direction; • Builds strong and independent life-long learners, aware of their strengths and challenges; • Incubates, continuously improves, and adopts diverse, equitable, and inclusive teaching best practices, schoolwide; • Provides essential training for faculty to grow and sustain initiatives that support the academic excellence of every student and teaching excellence throughout Hebron’s diverse faculty; • Differentiates Hebron to draw and retain talented students, regardless of their backgrounds and unique needs; • Sustains Hebron with steady enrollment, distinguished college admittance, and loyal alumni.

n just over six months, the Class of 1972 surpassed its $500,000 fundraising goal. On Saturday, September 30, 2023 Hebron held a dedication ceremony to celebrate this vision becoming a reality. Through the generosity of 19 donors who came together to contribute $511,350, Hebron has established the Class of 1972 Center for Academic Excellence at Hupper as well as the inaugural Hebron Faculty Fellowship Program.
The idea of teachers being partners in the educational process, as opposed to task masters, is so appealing. The idea of tutors and academic coaches helping to find ways to make learning easier, as opposed to insinuating one isn’t trying hard enough, is equally appealing. The Class of 1972 Center for Academic Excellence at Hupper is where we have an opportunity to help make these ideas a reality for current and future generations of Hebron students. Hebron has helped me as I have an adult who understands me. When I was in public school, I got extra help but the teachers treated me like I didn’t understand things. Here, my teachers have taught me about how my brain works, about brain science, how my brain develops, and how my ADHD brain is different. When you have something that not everyone else does, it is isolating and it is nice for me to know what is going on. Every coach has been really good and I’m grateful.
Hebron has given me the opportunity to reflect on my learning to find methods to improve and better myself. If I don’t understand something, I can talk to my academic coach when I need extra help and they can communicate on my behalf with my teachers. I had extra help from teachers in the past when I was in public school, but it’s much more personal here. It’s the best aspect of Hebron.

Any academic achievement I had at Hebron resulted from long hours of hard work and fear of failure. Programs such as envisioned for the Class of 1972 Center for Academic Excellence would have helped me work smarter – getting better results with much less stress. Hebron Academy Faculty Fellowship Program The Hebron Academy Faculty Fellowship Program is an excellent opportunity for those seeking experience living, learning, and working at a residential school with a collaborative and supportive community. The Fellows teach or co-teach one or two classes under the mentorship of a teacher leader; assist in residential life as dormitory faculty; and lead or assist in an afterschool sport or activity for one or two seasons. Outdoor Education Fellow
Jackson holds a BA in International Business from the University of Cincinnati. Jackson is an avid outdoors person who has served in various outdoor education roles, including tree climber, forestry crew, camp counselor, teacher, and gear manager. He was born and raised in Ohio.

Jessica will be teaching music for grades 6 and 7, working in The Center for Academic Guidance, serving as an assistant coach for the ski team, and working on the Spring production. Jessica holds a BFA in Theatre Education and Performance from Emerson College. She was born and raised in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Sarah holds a BA from Allegheny College and most recently worked as a student teacher at Meadville High School. Sarah is from Bethesda, Maryland and is very excited to integrate herself into the world of education.
CAMERON JAMES STEWART English Fellow
Cameron holds a BA in Philosophy from Goucher College and will be teaching English. Cameron previously served as an Assistant Director of the Outdoor Education campus at Brunswick School. He is from Lebanon, New Hampshire.
With the Class of 1972’s gift, we have established a faculty fellowship program to propel the expansion of our academic enrichment initiatives and support the continual improvement of all our students. Our initiatives incorporate evidence-based best practices in holistic and inclusive education, opening the door for the diverse range of our students to fine-tune study skills and learn strategies individually tailored for their academic success and personal development. As an incubator for educational innovation and excellence, our faculty fellowship program will not only elevate our students’ educational experience today but will also prepare them for the complex demands of their future. THE GIFT OF TIME
Giving is More Fun Than Receiving Cynthia Reedy returned briefly from retirement this past year to cover several middle and upper sections for a colleague. For those who met her, it was an unexpected encounter with an exuberant and multi-talented teacher who had served Hebron faithfully for more than thirty years. Celebrated as a French, Latin and German teacher during her tenure, Cindy had also offered classes in mathematics and science, a truly renaissance woman of the faculty. Cindy always sought to broaden the scope of her classes by infusing her students’ language experiences with song, poetry, games, acting and cross-disciplinary studies while her science students were treated to innovative lab work, experimentation and field studies. She expanded her own experience by studying at Dartmouth with the innovative language teacher John Rassias, immersed herself in Acadian culture at a Miquillon Island institute, and spent a semester in Morocco teaching and learning as a Fulbright Fellow. But it is Cindy’s unwavering devotion to Hebron that we celebrate here. When asked to rejoin the faculty for a term to fill a need, her response was immediate and joyful. Ever the teacher, she volunteered to arrange classes and activities for Hebron’s Middle School Health & Wellness curriculum, and her students had the chance to experience Cindy’s irrepressible good spirits and creative approaches to learning and to life. Hers truly was a gift of time and experience, yet another instance of Cindy’s joy in service to Hebron. This note is our community’s attempt to voice a great ‘Thank You’ for your kindness, creativity, and service to all.

Endowed Financial Aid SCOTT SMITH ’87 SCHOLARSHIP At Hebron Academy, the memory of Scott Smith ’87 is a symbol of dedication, scholarship, and unity. The loss of this dynamic student in the summer before his senior year left a void in the entire Hebron community. In 1996 Scott’s parents, Gene ’43 and Lois Smith, established the Scott Smith Scholarship as a testament to their enduring support for the Academy. The scholarship assists students who share Scott’s love for Hebron, his involvement in athletics and outdoor activities, his dedication to academics, and his ability to enhance the quality of Hebron life with humor and goodwill. Gene and Lois chose to remember him in a way that not only honors his memory, but also enriches the lives of Hebron’s students. It affirms the power of giving back, and the lasting bonds that connect us all as members of the Hebron Academy community. As we remember Scott, we celebrate the profound impact of scholarships in preserving the school’s spirit. The Scott Smith Scholarship offers future students a chance to model Scott’s embodiment of dedication, scholarship, and community. In 2023 the Smith Scholarship was awarded to Noah P. from Groveland, MA. Noah is a four-year student who enjoys hockey, hiking, soccer and lacrosse. He is a proctor, and a member of Green Key. Endowed scholarships, like the Scott Smith Scholarship, invest in the academy’s future by providing opportunities for dedicated, active students such as Noah, and ensure that the legacy of a Hebron experience continues for generations to come.
Endowed scholarship funds are a permanent investment in Hebron Academy, allowing Hebron to attract and retain a strong and diverse student body. An endowment is a gift that will exist in perpetuity, ensuring the stability and quality of Hebron for generations to come. Endowment assets (the principal) are invested and each year, a portion (~ 5%) of the value of the fund is paid out to support the fund’s purpose, and any earnings in excess of this distribution are used to build the fund’s market value. Endowment provides relief and flexibility in the annual operating budget, making it a critical tool to build long-term financial health. Hebron has 18 endowed scholarship funds which are invested for long-term growth as part of Hebron’s overall endowment. In 2022–2023, donors gave a total of $497,800 in new gifts to endowed scholarship funds. The annual draw of Hebron’s endowed scholarship funds provided just under $200,000 in scholarship support to Hebron students. In the competitive independent school market, even a $2,000–$5,000 scholarship award can sway a family’s decision to choose Hebron over another institution. Gifts to endowed financial aid provide students with the opportunity to benefit from Hebron’s lifechanging education every year.

Planned Giving You don’t need to choose between providing for your loved ones and supporting Hebron Academy. You can make a difference at Hebron while reducing taxes for you and your heirs by including the Academy in your estate planning. With thoughtful consideration, estate gifts preserve money for your family and, in some cases, may actually boost an inheritance. BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS Beneficiary designations are the easiest way to leave a legacy. They are made by assigning a percentage of assets to Hebron using a form that is separate from your will or living trust—hence no need to engage legal counsel. These gifts pass outside of probate, directly to Hebron. Designations can be made on a variety of financial instruments, including: • Retirement accounts • Investment accounts • Bank accounts • Donor-advised funds (a/k/a charitable giving account) • Life insurance policies Designations on retirement accounts can be a tax savvy way to leave a provision for Hebron and other nonprofits you care about, as these assets pass tax-free to charity, while non-spouse heirs will pay income tax on the assets.
IRA ASSETS – GREAT FOR CURRENT, ANNUAL GIFTS The IRA Charitable Rollover allows individuals who are 70.5 years old or older to direct qualified charitable distributions (QCD) from their IRA account to qualified domestic charities each tax year, up to an annual limit of $100,000.
Rollover donors can avoid taking their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) or lessen the income they must recognize from their RMD, by directing their IRA Plan Administer to make a QCD to Hebron. Because QCDs go directly from the Plan Administrator to the donor’s designated charity, the donor does not recognize any income from their tax-deferred IRA and cannot take a tax-deduction for the gift.
BEQUESTS AND DESIGNATIONS Bequests and beneficiary designations signify what is important to you and affirm the values you consider most essential. These revocable gifts provide ways to support future generations of Hebron students that have no effect on your current finances. Bequests A bequest is a gift anyone can afford, and it offers many options for leaving a gift that is meaningful to you. Here are four ways to consider making a bequest to Hebron • Specify an amount of money • Specify a percentage of your estate • Identify specific gifts such as shares of stock; art; real estate; personal property • Specify the remainder (all or a percentage) of your estate after all debts, charges, and other bequests have been honored
