I’d like to thank everyone involved in the “Who’s New at the Zoo-2” Welcome Dinner. Fi organised the food and more, Suzie liaised with our wonderful estate agents, Barb with Council for all the necessary permits. Tony and Nige sorted the bar. Heatley and Bec cooked up on the BBQ, Wolf brought the ping pong, Kristie greeted all. Thanks Brooke, Shane, Mark, Tanya and everyone who came along. There’s some photos for you to find in the paper, too. Not nearly as popular as last year, I am still pleased we welcomed about 10 new locals to town, and caught up with lovely longer-timers in Rainbow. We listened to Joel Mak’s songs, tasted yummy selections from the Surf Club, Rainbow Fruit, IGA and Rainbow Meats, and everyone packed up quickly before the storm hit us. Except the RBCT committee, who said they had to ‘keep an eye’ on the eskies. One backpacker tried to cook up their dinner in the downpour. He dodged the lightning to ask us if it was safe to walk
Owners: Heatley & Michelle Gilmore home to the backpackers. We said, ‘No, mate. Come and join us.’ (We had more shelter). We also had excess hot sausages, rocky road (who brought that yummy container full?) and some BBQ chips. Two Danes, two Dutch and one Swede dripped over to us. It didn’t matter they were half our age, or that we had aprons draped over us to keep out the almost horizontal rain. As we rode the storm out, they taught us some things about their countries and Little Fat Lamb (which we resisted trying). In the cultural interchange, they received lessons on how to eat sausages in Australia (that is with tomato sauce, not mayo) and why stubbie holders were vital. (I’d never thought about them being irrelevant in a land where winter reigns.) The rain eased, we said our goodbyes - heart warmed, I realised that was what the welcome dinner was all about. To all, a Merry Christmas xxx

Festival of Small Halls
OR THE second year in a row, local Brooke Bignell has secured one of the best tours to stop into Rainbow Beach. The Festival of Small Halls will be here on Wednesday December 12, and tickets are limited. Brooke invites, “The Community Hall doors will be opening at 5.30pm, with the show starting at 6pm. Come down early for a bite to eat, before the show.” There will be a BBQ dinner and cash bar. Limited tickets will be available at the door, so be sure to bring cash. Brooke has secured opening act, Maleny regular, Rob Longstaff, who is back on home soil after a European tour. Followed by Old Man Luedecke and Lucy Wise, chosen not only because of their beautiful musicianship, but because they connect with people through storytelling, their ability to tell a joke, as well as real interest in visiting places a little off the beaten track, like Rainbow Beach! “We would love to invite the Small Halls tour here again next year (and I’m sure they’d appreciate their days off in paradise again), and we can only do that with your support,” encourages Brooke. “Children under 13 are free, and we’ll have the games table set up again. Lucy Wise has delighted audiences across Australia and internationally with her soulful voice, masterful storytelling and intricate ukulele, guitar and Appalachian dulcimer playing. Lucy grew up with a lot of musical instruments around the house, performing at Australian folk festivals with the Wise Family Band until she moved to Melbourne in 2009. Having toured two albums and and two EPs in Australia, New Zealand, USA and the UK over the past eight years, Lucy has developed a great reputation for her songwriting, which weaves together traditional folk and pop influences with a strong focus on storytelling. She has played to packed venues at Sidmouth Music Week (UK), The National Folk Festival (ACT), Port Fairy Folk Festival (VIC) and Woodford Folk Festival (QLD). Lucy’s third album, Winter Sun (2018) draws upon Lucy’s experiences touring and meeting people from all over, as well as her times spent at home, walking the streets and creek paths of Melbourne. In her solo show, she explores themes of love, joy and sadness, friendships and the relationships people form with their environment.
A two-time JUNO Award winner, Old Man Luedecke’s songs are melodic gems blending oldtime sensibilities with an unusual vision and poetic sense. His music belies someone more than slightly ill at ease with modern life and he performs with a gentle and endearing charisma, stories littered with a canny oblique humour; he’s a sly entertainer with almost a hint of contemporary vaudeville about him and he plays a mean claw hammer banjo clearly derivative of the old time and Appalachia. He’s a revelation! From the music rich maritime province of Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada, a banjo songster like Old Man Luedecke is a rare type of musician. A songwriting one of such hopeful goodness, rarer still. In the tradition of solo banjo men and women of days gone by like Doc Boggs, Old Man Luedecke sings his songs accompanied only by his loving five string, foot stomps and the occasional yodel. This is a bizarre type of music Doc Boggs might have made if he’d studied poetry.

Carols coming to Cooloola Cove
A simple idea at a Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends meeting has come to creation of the Cooloola Cove Community Christmas and Carols. A partnership between the Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends, Cooloola Wesleyan Methodist Church, Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall and YAP has resulted in an afternoon of family fun that will have something for everyone. A free jumping castle for the kids, big games to play, competitions with a Christmas theme and old fashioned fun, BBQ, cake and coffee, raffles, entertainment, craft, carol singing and a visit from Santa will be on offer. Wanting to bring the community together, the Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends coordinated the activities with the anticipation it will become an annual event. It’s free to attend, so come down to the hall beside Woolworths from 3pm Saturday, bring a chair/blanket, torch and singing voice to enjoy the carols from 6.30pm.

A masquerade party
Dress to impress and make a night to remember at the Tin Can Bay Country Clubs New Years Eve! The Shades of Grey ‘Masquerade Party’ has free entry – no charge and no set menu. The Chinese restaurant is open as normal and there is no set dress, people can dress formal if they wish. The music starts at 7.00pm Shades of Grey promise honest classic rock, played with plenty of heart and soul and probably a little too much sweat! Shades of Grey is an old school rock band. Together they have almost 100 years of combined performance experience, most of which they can’t remember! Based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, the band members all have their own musical influences from 60s rock and roll, blues and Australian rock, to some slightly obscure bands.
They have put together an eclectic mix of songs that will bring back great memories of going out to see live bands in the old days.
VER WANTED TO ride on the biggest travelling Ferris Wheel in Australia or race a lap with your mates on the massive Dodgem Cars circuit? Maybe win a few prizes in the show games or get a sugar fix with fairy floss and snow cones? For over two weeks during the festive season there will be good old fashioned family fun to be had down in Lions Park on the Tin Can Bay foreshore. From December 22 to January 6, the Tin Can Bay Christmas Carnival will come to life from 5pm every evening, apart from being closed on Christmas Day. “We’re hoping to stamp this carnival on the Cooloola Coast calendar to keep visitors and locals entertained during the holiday period,” Tin Can Bay Chamber of Commerce President Jess Milne exclaimed. There are numerous rides for all ages including the Cha-Cha and Bungee Trampoline, sideshow games and classic carnival food on offer so bring the family down and enjoy some fun by the water.
Fireworks Double Day in the Bay As part of the awesome Tin Can Bay Christmas Carnival there will be crackers of epic proportions. Christmas Eve will feature a visit from the red suited Father Christmas with his big sack of giveaway goodies then the sky will light up with a colourful fireworks display about 8:30pm. To bring in the New Year sit back and enjoy some local entertainment while the kids let loose in the carnival. So the whole family can enjoy the spectacular, the traditional fireworks will let fly about 9:30pm. For those in the Tin Can Bay area with pets, keep them safe and secure during both fireworks events to avoid the heartache of a furry runaway.
The Bowery Boys at the Sports Club
Hard hitting Rockabilly trio, The Bowery Boys are based on the Sunshine Coast Queensland. With guitar, double bass and drums, this little band has a big sound. Enjoy live entertainment from 8pm till late, with free entry and a courtesy bus available. See you at the club!

Craft Vintage and Recyclables Fair and more at the Hall
F
OR AN END-OF-YEAR clean out or stock up, there will be a Craft Vintage and Recyclables Fair in the hall on December 8, book a table at the centre. The Rainbow Beach school end-of-year concert is on December 11. Community Centre action sees the return of the Festival of Small Halls on December 12, featuring Aussies Rob Longstaff and Lucy Wise and Canadian Old Man Leudecke - be there for an evening of fine entertainment. The Community Centre committee met with Gympie Council’s parks team and discussed the forward program that Council has for Rainbow Beach as an exploration of possibilities for partnership. Relevant activities are that Council is tendering for a concept design for a town sports oval and will be undertaking related
public consultation over the coming months to scope out the project. Beach access for the mobility impaired is also currently under consideration, and there is an ongoing program in Laurie Hansen and Phil Rogers parks to improve toilet and recreational facilities. The concept of a bike path from town to Carlo Point was noted and will be considered as part of road improvement in coming years, and a bike path to Inskip Point, whilst recognised as a real benefit, will need significant input from state and federal levels. A ‘movies in the park’ night is proposed for early in the new year, January 10 or 12 mooted as possible dates. Something to look forward to, confirmation of details in the next issue.

HE LOVE STORY for Justin Platt and Manuela Pepinghege began at Rainbow Beach Hotel. “We never thought that this would have ever happened, meeting our true love in a pub!” smiled Manuela (known as Ella). Their chance meeting was in September, 2014: Ella was catching up with a friend after a trip to Orange; Justin had gone in to watch the football. Then they set eyes on each other. Justin struck up some conversation with Ella, who was from Germany, and it went quickly to talking about where they were from. “Justin was very surprised that I knew exactly where Bathurst (near his hometown of Lyndhurst) was, and about the Bathurst 1000.” Since Justin is a pilot in Houston, Texas, and Ella is a hair stylist at Rainbow Hair and Beauty Studio, it is just as well they have, as Ella says, “Totally have figured out how to survive a long-distance relationship”.
When the time came for Justin to propose, he made it one to remember - in Surfers Paradise, after a fantastic weekend at the Gold Coast 600. Zaneta Fitzgerald officiated at their ceremony on Rainbow Beach. Said Ella, “We had a lot of weather challenges, but the rain made it even more fun and memorable for everyone.The sky was so dramatic - amazing for the photos! When the time came to sign the papers, the sun came out!” The couple celebrated their event with a small reception on the Deck at Sea Salt. There’s no honeymoon just yet, said Ella, “I dropped Justin back to the airport two days after the ceremony. We both have to work.” They look forward to being happy anywhere in the world, together.

HEN GREG LEWIS decided to move on from his high-flying corporate career he shifted gears to a more leisurely sea change to Rainbow Beach. “We thought, right well, we have the chance to live in our favourite holiday destination, so we should take it! We bought a house here in about 2013 and then moved here at the end of 2015.” Greg and his family have always enjoyed holidaying in and around the Fraser Coast. “I was born and raised in Maryborough, finished my schooling and moved down to Brisbane to further my studies and do a Bachelor of Business in Leisure Management. I also did an associate diploma in Marketing as well.” Greg always had a love of tennis but knew his real talents lay off the court and in the boardroom. “As a Junior I used to play, but I was smart enough to realise I was never going to make a dollar playing the sport, so I went the other way. I ended up working for Tennis Queensland for about ten years.”
When a teaching opportunity become available for Greg’s wife Sandy in the Gulf of Carpentaria, they jumped at the opportunity. “We had our four-year stint on Mornington Island, it was amazing! Between my tennis and Sandy’s softball, we both spent time in indigenous communities, it was something we were both interested in. “Sandy’s teaching is what got us up there and I was using that time to upgrade my qualifications. I did a post grad in Psychology. I also had a job managing the Health and Well Being Centre. We would look after all the fly in, fly out, health services up on the island.

“At that time we didn’t have any children and we thought, what an amazing experience to be able to go and have. We only had to do two years. We stayed four!” It was shortly after this that Greg and Sandy decided to move to Rainbow Beach. “That’s when I first met Glenn Wiggins the owner of Surf and Sand Safari and I had the opportunity to start driving. Even with a young family and renovating a house, it all works in quite well around each other. “When I met Glenn he had only just started expanding the business to include the full day tour out of Noosa via the Great Beach Drive 4WD Tours. That’s where we have seen a considerable increase in the
business.The internationals that are coming through are probably doubling year-on-year but we have a very healthy domestic base too.” With the silly season right around the corner and two beautiful kids, Zali and Hayden, keeping him on his toes, things are starting to get pretty busy for Greg and the team. “The main thrust of our business is personalised, intimate and flexible touring experiences. Those are the things that we find are working really well, our private tours are becoming more and more sought after. A lot of people want to avoid the crowds and maybe have a bit more of a say in how their day looks.” Public access to Double Island Point lighthouse is limited to walking trails but Surf and Sand Safari can save your legs and deliver you there in air-conditioned comfort, being one of the few operators with direct access to the lookout. “It’s not just the lighthouse that make the tour such a hit; whales, dolphins, turtles, manta rays, goanna’s and bird life are all regulars on our tours. YMPIE REGIONAL Council is seeking your views on RV (Recreational Vehicle) tourism to attract and encourage visitors to the Gympie Region. There is a survey for travellers (locals too) or businesses and non-RV travelling locals. The Cooloola Coast is included. One question asks if we should have major sites located to give visitors the option to stay in the Mary Valley, Cooloola Coast, Western Region and Gympie, with minor sites at key destinations (eg Kinbombi Falls). Comments are now being sought to help shape Council’s RV Strategy to plan for the increasing number of visitors from this growing tourism sector. First local’s open water course in two years S
UMMER IS HERE and we have fantastic diving at Wolf Rock this month, including two newly qualified locals! Congratulations to Scott Higham and Crystal-Lee Lewis who completed the PADI Open Water Course with Wolf Rock Dive last month. This is the first Open Water Course we have completed since our take over of ownership two years ago, and it went really well. The guys completed the theory element in the shop, the confined exercises in the Sports Club swimming pool and their first two Open Water dives at the shallower ‘Round Bommie’, off Double Island Point. The conditions were favourable and we managed to finish the last two dives at Wolf Rock! Even with a limited maximum depth of 18 metres the guys still saw grey nurse sharks, leopard sharks and all manner of rays. We even saw a pair of mating octopus! We have a lot of male grey nurse sharks on the site swimming up very closely to the divers, the males are now looking to mate so are pretty inquisitive, giving our guests an up-close interaction! We have also seen large ‘fevers’ of eagle rays up to 40 in number, hanging around in the blue around Wolf Rock. These graceful rays are named Mobulas and are the smaller relative of the majestic manta ray. The site has been showing us a huge variety of different species this month. Not only sharks and eagle rays but also manta ray, sea snakes, leopard sharks, bull rays,

ORD HAS GOT around about the dolphins at Tin Can Bay with a steady stream of visitors everyday. Unfortunately we have been having a few issues with a couple of pelicans wanting to be in on the act of fish feeding. We try to scare them off with waving flags, but they can be very persistent. Christmas will be upon us very soon so we are preparing for a bumper season. Let’s hope the dolphins will accommodate and visit regularly during the festive season. We wish everyone a wonderful family Christmas and a happy new year. A reminder that we will be feeding the dolphins on Christmas Day even though the cafe will not be open for general trading.
Rainbow Beach underground power update

OUNCIL ALLOCATED a budget of $340,00 this financial year as part of the Capital Works program. This Capital Works budget is to go towards placing the power lines underground and install new street lights in the main street of Rainbow Beach (between Clarkson Drive and the foreshore). This project is in partnership with Energex and details are still being worked on regarding the logistics of placing the power underground. Once confirmed, Council will update the community, including the design and dates for construction.

HE PARKING overflow area on the corner of Rainbow Beach Rd and Green Valley Drive was identified as part of the “Our Towns” consultation process undertaken in 2016. Residents who participated in that process identified the need for better pedestrian and cycling routes, as well as improvements to the streetscape in the main street as the highest priorities. The parking overflow area is part of a longer term vision for the area. There is currently no funding allocated to it.

Stealing from Gympie to feed the Coast? I don’t think so Michelle Gilmore

HE GYMPIE REGION Tourism Discussion Paper was endorsed by Council in late October. The paper delves into data and observations on what’s working and what could be improved for tourism in our region. Unfortunately, it was published in November, as the paper was delivered, and comments were due in before December, despite advising Council of our coastal deadlines. The report claims that our coast is “stealing share” from Gympie City, and that sub-regions are “cannibalising” marketing initiatives. Why would a report that it is trying to create harmony across each corner of the region, use such inflammatory words?

Tourism business owners on the coast do work collaboratively, and those who I have spoken to would agree with the report that a “visitor dispersal strategy is about growing the entire pie for the benefit of all sub-regions”. The fact is, travellers know the names Rainbow Beach or Tin Can Bay, Gympie is not on their radar yet. As the report suggests, “Gympie City increasingly has become a utility destination where visitors drive ‘through’ rather than drive to”. It stresses that it is vital Rainbow Beach’s visitor numbers are not jeopardised, and that their maintenance or growth are of “equal priority” to visitor dispersal region wide. The report asks that each area get behind the “ONE message”. I guess as long as that means we aren’t confusing people with the *The Gympie Region Tourism Discussion Paper 2018

regions in attracting international visitors from UK and Germany (12,000 and 10,000 visitors respectively).

word Gympie, when we market Rainbow Beach or Tin Can Bay, that should work out fine! They want us to focus on experience development as opposed to marketing, so more travellers stay longer. For instance it says that a Kilkivan Church should be moved to Phil Rogers Park and refurbished with a “Montville Chapel” style. This would position Rainbow Beach as one of only “two” true beach-located churches in our state. It mentions the proposed Tin Can Bay Jetty, and the Mary Valley Country provide other backdrops for the lucrative wedding industry. The report calls for more paid tourism experiences in Mary Valley Country, Kilkivan and Goomeri to capitalise on the emerging food tourism or bike trail destination credentials we have.
Definitely, RV travellers at the Gympie Rest Areas are guests of the region (it is not illegal as the document states). Correctly, the report does suggest they should be receiving the best of welcomes, and that Council find ways to extract more spend as they travel here. They ask us to consider the best location(s) for the region’s future Visitor Information Centres, as the highway is upgraded further, remove billboard signage and consider names of places. I believe the idea listed of changing the name of the Cooloola Great Walk, to the Great Beach Walk does capitalise on the success of the Great Beach Drive, and I like that the proposed Australia’s Nature Country works with our Australia’s Nature Coast. If only he’d listened to his mum...

HIS TIME last year I penned an article outlining the poor driving behaviour and attitudes I’d witnessed that month. Now, 12 months on, I think I could almost write the same article again. During a routine patrol of Teewah Beach last month I met up with a young ‘P’ plate driver who had been putting on a show for his mates sitting up on the dunes. His display of ‘fishtails’ and ‘donuts’ was being enthusiastically cheered on – until everyone caught sight of the police car approaching. Now, as a police officer I am quite partial to a good doughnut – but not the kind that this young fella was offering. His ‘donut’ was not only putting his own safety at risk,
but also that of some nearby families and fishermen. The fact that his breath alcohol concentration was 0.116% certainly didn’t enhance his driving ability - or his memory for that matter. According to his recollection he was simply moving his car out of the way, so his mate could drive to Freshwater to use the facilities; and that was the version he valiantly stuck with until I pointed to my dashcam. As he sat in the back of the police car with his head in his hands - being consoled by the same idiots who had been cheering him on minutes earlier - all he could say was, “the last thing Mum told me before I came up here was don’t drink drive”.
I know I go on about road safety in my articles, but these are the kind of people you are sharing the road and the beach with. Not only do they have little regard for traffic and other laws, some are actually proud of their efforts to break them; and in the process they compromise the safety of other road users. Safety on our roads and beaches will be a priority for police as we approach the Christmas school holidays. So please, if you are travelling over the holiday period, don’t drink and drive, be patient, drive safely and stay alert. It could save your life!

HE LOCAL Ambulance Committee is keen to ensure that members of our community keep as safe as possible throughout the year. With the hot summer weather already making its presence felt, the committee has again arranged for the distribution of Heat Stress flyers to some outlets in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach, as well as both libraries. The flyers are free and offer some very helpful hints on how to prevent heatrelated illness for seniors, babies and children in particular. Practical measures such as drinking small amounts of water every 15-20 minutes, wearing lightweight

clothing and avoiding strenuous activity are some of the suggestions for avoiding heat stress. There is also advice on the early signs of heat stress and remember if it progresses to heat stroke, it is a medical emergency and you need to call triple zero (000). The Ambulance Officers have again reported problems with identifying house numbers stencilled on driveways particularly at Rainbow Shores. Please ensure that leaf litter is cleared from the house number and that it is kept clearly visible at all times. HE COOLOOLA COAST Youth Activity Project has had a very busy 2018. The regular activity program has included some outstanding events such as the creation of a youth section in the Art Show, another section Champion at the Flower Show, outstanding performances at the Cooloola’s Got Talent showcase and Sound of Teen Spirit concert. President, Jess Milne, would like to thank all the community groups, individuals and businesses that have supported YAP over the past year. “Without the generosity of the community our organisation wouldn’t be able to continue to provide safe social and mentoring opportunities for youth on the Cooloola Coast. “I would also like to take a moment to thank the YAP volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver our motto of encouraging, supporting and empowering the next generation. From early morning market set up, selling raffle tickets, busking for change or helping at activities their enthusiasm glue holds YAP together,” Jess exclaimed. Looking into the future, YAP is open to any organisation that has an idea for a youth activity that will offer a chance to sample something new. “We have solid partnerships with several organisations providing very successful activities on an annual basis and we are hoping to expand. LIMBING PLANTS do not have strong stems, so in shaded places they require some support to reach the light they require to thrive. They climb in various ways. Some use their stalks or stems to twist their way up; others use tendrils, roots, thorns or spikes to attach themselves. There are also semi-climbers - plants that can be trained to climb or be left as sprawling shrubs unless pruned into shape. Consider the attachment method when choosing your climbing plant to ensure it suits your purpose. Apart from trellises, climbers can be used to cover fences for privacy or as a windbreak, or just to enhance the appearance. Climbers look great over a pergola, may hide an unattractive aspect
of the garden, screen off an area or be left to grow horizontally as a trailing ground cover on banks. We have many attractive climbing plants in our area and our plant of the month is Elaeagnus triflora (Millaa Millaa vine), a strong climber or spreading shrub that attracts birds, has leaves with silvery undersides , scented white flowers and edible red, globular fruit. OW THAT I have entered the fourth year at trying to help families affected by drought, I’m sure that you will all be aware of the serious mental consequences people in Western Qld are experiencing. Only last week two generations of the same family walked off their property and suicides continue. Since my last report there has been no rainfall, with dams and town reservoirs quickly evaporating. As an example Longreach has had 7mm of rain since March 5! There is very little stock left in south west Queensland to feed. Last month I sent a semi load of hay and two pallets of cattle meal to the Barcaldine area, and last week
another load of hay and sheep meal went to the same farmer. The area I am providing food supplies to is between Barcaldine - Winton - Windorah - Blackall and as far north to Muttaburra and Aramac. If you are donating to appeals please make sure your funds are going to the right area. Questions are being asked of some charities that are funded and there will be more heard about this. At least we have no admin costs. ELBOURNE CUP DAY lunch at the Cooloola Bowls club provided great entertainment and fun for the over 60s. All sorts of colourful fascinators, hats and outfits were on display and the girls in our group certainly didn’t disappoint in looking the part.
The brief for models participating in the fashion show was to find pre-loved clothes for the parade. Lovely dresses, tops and pants were shown by models of all sizes; some outfits costing as little as four dollars. Of course, everyone enjoyed the lunch, dabbled in the sweeps as well as everything else that makes Melbourne Cup a fun day! OVEMBER WAS A big month for the Tin Can Bay Camera Club which saw the Annual Presentation Night and the judging of the annual Tewantin-Noosa Shield photography competition. Held annually for PSQ-affiliated clubs, 9 clubs from around south-east Queensland entered this year’s TNS. TCBCC has entered the competition every year since 2008, with a best result of 6th in 2017. This year, the Club once again had entries in all four categories – Pictorial, People, Nature and the Special Subject – Looking Down. The three judges each scored images out of five, for a total score out of 15 points per image. Tin Can Bay images scored consistently high to record a total Club score of 232 – the Club’s highest ever score in the competition. This result put them in first place to take out the Tewantin Shield for the first time, ahead of
Peninsula Camera Club from Brisbane, which finished in second place, 5 points behind TCBCC. As if winning the Shield wasn’t enough, club photographer Cheryl Murphy also took out first place and Champion Image for her entry in the Nature category. Other notable mentions include John Murphy who was awarded second in the Pictorial category with a perfect score of 15 points (the Club’s highest individual score). Paivi Lobigs was awarded second in the Nature category, and Cheryl Murphy was also awarded second in the Looking Down category. The result is the Club’s first win in a major competition and members were thrilled by the result. Our small regional club was definitely punching above its weight, beating many larger clubs, and the high standard of the Club’s images is a testimony to the efforts club members have made during 2018. All are now fired up and looking forward to 2019 and new photographic challenges.

Mark is a Personal Trainer, has been a Rainbow local for over two years, and at Rainbow Beach Gym since the New Year. He has been training people for over 23 years, as well as Muay Thai (kickboxing) and MMA Fighter and Trainer, he is qualified in Exercise Physiology from Griffith University. Mark says, “My biggest thing with what I do, is functional movement. FTER HAVING some nice warm days at home, going back to chilly nights and cooler days was a little bit of a shock for us. We knew we would be in for some cooler weather because Moss Vale is situated in the Southern Highlands of NSW. But it was still colder than we expected. It’s a shame we were a month or two too late for the spring with all the new shoots on the trees. I hear that it is truly magnificent to see the new leaves bursting into life. The only day we had free was on the Wednesday before the show. Even though it was a miserable rainy day, we took ourselves off for a little drive around the area. Moss Vale is part of a closely settled region that includes Mittagong, Berrima and Bowral and lots of tiny communities. One of these very small towns is Burrawang. With the misty rain, interspersed with quick heavy showers, we were reminded of a typical little English village with lots of very tall leafy trees and quaint cottages tucked behind hedges and massive flowering gardens. Of course, we just had to have lunch at the pub and chat with some of the locals. There have been a number of industries in this area, the first of which was cattle grazing in 1819. the first land owner in the district and established a cattle property. With its rich volcanic soil and good rainfall, the area was home to sheep and many agricultural industries such as potato growing and dairying. Today, Moss Vale is mostly lightto-medium industries with the dairying industry taking a back seat. There is so much to explore in the area and very close to the south coast of Nowra, Wollongong and Bateman’s Bay. When we are going past next time, we are going to pop in to the Sir Donald Bradman Centre to check out the cricket museum. I hope you make time to enjoy this part of our beautiful country. Satellite TV reception If you are holidaying at Inskip Point, Freshwater Campgrounds or Rainbow Waters Holiday Park at Carlo Point, you will find that the TV reception from our local TV transmitter is very poor. The best way to get TV reception in those areas is with a satellite dish. This will give you TV reception anywhere in Australia as long as you have clear view of the northern sky - no trees in the way. We have been selling satellite systems for 15 years and helping travellers get their favourite programs while they enjoy their 12-volt camping. HERE HAS the year gone? We breakup on the Tuesday December 4 and we come back on January 15, 2019. I think most of us are finishing off Christmas presents, I know I am. We have had quite a good year and we have been on a few trips and we have done quite a few projects. We have a trip coming up in February 2019, so that is something to look forward to. We will be celebrating our Christmas break-up at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club on December 11, who do a great lunch for us. Not only do we make quilts of all shapes and sizes, we do make smaller items such as bags, cup holders, table
runners, placemats, etc. So it does not have to be a quilt you make if you want to join us. You do not need an expensive machine if you are learning, just a straight sewing machine is good enough. We have quite a few interesting projects in the year, as well as a few bus trips, so if you are interested please come along. Science in the Hall C
OOLOOLA COASTCARE and Gympie Regional STEM Hub are joining forces on December 8 to bring you another Science in the Hall event, this time in Tin Can Bay. At 2pm the panel of speakers will be presenting how to manage urban runoff to minimise the impact on fishing in the area through water-sensitive urban design. We’ll also hear about the exciting next step by Cooloola Coastcare extending the research to explore the biodiversity in the urban and non-urban creeks and around the moorings in Tin Can Inlet. Funded by the GRC Environment Levy, it is aimed at understanding the causes of the diminished fish populations in the Inlet. Join us at 3pm for the Cooloola Coastcare AGM where you’ll hear reports about our projects including the Cooloola BioBlitz, WaterWatch, Coastal and Marine Debris Collections, the National Science Week STEAMzone Festival and youth
programs, and the new TurtleWatch project and EcoFilm Club. Join us for refreshments at the RSL Club after the meeting. Coastcare members are pictured at the Who’s New event last month.

OOLOOLA COVE Residents and Friends Inc. are happily reporting that last month our long-awaited meeting with GRC took place. By now our members are up to date with the outcomes and are moving forward with our gained knowledge on the list of concerns we aired. On behalf of the Management Committee and myself, I would like to thank GRC representatives Pauline Gorton, Dimitri Scordalides, Lynn Blandford and Cr. Mark McDonald for such a positive and productive meeting, with no questions and answers off limits. Thanks to you all. The petition for the medical facility is in full swing and will hopefully surpass
what is required. We have again this year donated to support our local P10 state school and we are asking that the award be presented to a child who has put in extra effort to achieve a great result for their ability. Plans for the ‘Cooloola Cove Community Christmas and Carols’, family afternoon for December 8 is starting to come together and we trust you will bring your children and yourselves along to ‘the Vets’ Hall’ for games, craft, food and drinks, culminating with Christmas carols at 6.30pm. In Brief Join the Coolabay Choir The choir has started up again and very keen to spread the word to those who enjoy singing as well as joining in with other groups. So far we have had five members join their voices for the BIGSING2018, with a performance in the Brolga Theatre Maryborough and The Gympie Singers in the Remembrance concert in Gympie. Tin Can Bay drainage project Gympie Regional Council takes the responsibility of environmental protection seriously. As such, work has temporarily ceased at the Groper Street (Tin Can Bay) drainage project after the discovery of the Cooloola Sedge Frog, a near-threatened species of frog. The Cooloola Sedge Frog is native to our region and its protection is legislated under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act. To ensure the protection of this species, Council is working with the state government to prepare a Species Management Program.

The purpose of this program is to establish measures to mitigate the impact the project could have on the Cooloola Sedge Frog population during works and to ensure the species is protected moving forward. The formulation of a Species Management Program can be a lengthy process. Council will inform the community of the recommencement date of the drainage project once the Species Management Program has been completed in accordance with legislation. Cooloola Coast Probus News We were saddened to lose one of our foundation members recently - Pam Leslie. She served as our Welfare Officer for many years in spite of failing eyesight. At our monthly meeting many members paid tribute to her. She was a great lady and will be greatly missed, not just by us but by the whole community. The Melbourme Cup celebrations at the Cooloola Bowling Club were so much fun. Some even came home a bit richer due to their winnings on the sweeps. One of our members, John Olson won the prize for the Best Dressed Male. Two of our members, Val and Graham McClurg, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently. Congratulations! Resource Centre Update It has been a very tumultuous year for the Resource Centre but it has finished on a good note. We are all settled into our new location under the wing of the Community Church at the Centrelink building in Tin Can Bay. It has shown us that there is definitely a need in the community for our service and will be especially needed over the Christmas/New Year period, as for some people this can be a very difficult time. We can offer food vouchers for those in genuine need (Centrelink Income
Statement Required) or fuel vouchers for those who need to travel to Gympie or elsewhere for medical appointments (please bring your doctor’s appointments with you). We can also offer referrals for various other organisations to assist you with budgeting, child and family connect, carer support and many more. We are located at the Centrelink Building in Buchanan Street, Tin Can Bay. Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch Inc News Finally, we have come to the end of the year, it seemed to come up very quickly. Last month we lost someone very close to the RSL, our very dear and feisty Pam Leslie. She will be missed by both the members of the sub-branch and the P-10 Tin Can Bay State School where she visited regularly to update the children about the workings of the military and the RSL. Tickets will be available right through to the day of the drawing. Also, our ham raffles are going well on market day, only one day left on December 19, with five more hams up for grabs. Our drop-in centre will be open each Tuesday and Wednesday (9.30 to 11.30) if anyone wishes to come and discuss any issues they have. Once again, all welcome! Superheroes and Pre-Preps at Rainbow Beach State School Danny Staneig - Principal
S
TUDENTS ARE busy in the classroom completing units of work and assessments, as well as preparing for Christmas concert items. The student council will organize some games for the Prep, 1 and 2 students over the coming weeks on a Monday and Wednesday playtime and some aspiring DJs will pump out some tunes during lunch breaks. I have discussed with our Year 5 students the opportunity for them to nominate for student leader positions for 2019. We talked about the roles and responsibilities of RBSS leadership positions and what makes a good leader. Students that have shown an interest in these positions will bring an application package home for you to peruse and discuss with them. At this stage, we have sixteen year 6 students for 2019, all of which have demonstrated leadership qualities during their time at Rainbow Beach State School. It is for this reason that the year 6 students will participate in a leadership camp in Term one 2019 at Tallebudgera Beach School Camp on the Gold Coast. It is a five day camp with the theme of ‘Hero’s Journey’ based on students leaving behind their familiar surroundings and journeying to an exciting ‘new world’ where there are risks, challenges and new problems to be solved.

There was a great turn out of students at last Thursday’s Breakfast/Fitness club for the word had passed around that the Principal of school wasn’t going to be there and instead, some young, exciting and fit instructor (Mark from the Gym) would be taking the activities. Furthermore, there were rumors that a
celebrity chef (Matt and Bernie from the IGA) would be cooking and the food was going to be great; bacon, eggs, hash browns, coco pops and nutri-grain. This was great! The kids loved it and they come in droves. I thank our volunteers for their time and effort but now the regular chefs and fitness instructor will be there this week and I am concerned about the students’ disappointment!

Our school swimming program is on December 3 to 7, each day for the week. Swimming is a part of the school HPE curriculum and the expectation is that all students will participate fully. The school will fund the program. Thanks to the tuckshop team!
The role of our tuckshop and the people who provide nutritious food and drinks for students and staff is very important to our school community. I hope after each shift our tuckshop helpers feel their contribution has been appreciated by the students and the school. Although we have various people helping throughout the year, it is BJ and Kirstie that are rock solid every Friday. As a parent it is a great feeling knowing that you don’t have to get up and make morning teas and lunches on a Friday. The students, parents and staff thank you for your delicious food and smiling faces.

Tin Can Bay School News Remembrance Day
The memorable morning was attended by community members and representatives from the TCB RSL Sub Branch. Wreath laying accompanied by a minute’s silence gave reflection to the significance of Armistice Day and the sacrifice made by those lost to the war. A special tribute was paid to Mrs Pam Leslie who gave service to the community and made special contribution to the school.
20-year celebration The hall was alive with fun and laughter on November 13 when past and present came together. There were stalls, food and
student competition finals that included some outstanding performances. The afternoon ended with the opening of the time capsule. The TCB Craft Club also gave a generous donation and the school is looking to air condition one classroom with the funds raised.
Christmas Concert On December 13 the annual Christmas concert will give students from Prep to Yr 9 a chance to let loose. Each class will dazzle with a performance onstage and there will be a few sea creatures making a guest appearance.

Chappy Karen has spent her first term getting to know the staff, students and some of their families and is looking forward to the new year. “I am hoping to start up lunchtime craft and possibly friendship groups,” Karen explained. By being on hand to talk to students, staff and parents about any issue, problem, life event or just a listening ear,

Karen is committed to providing support any way she can. She also loves getting in the classroom and assisting students with work or before school crafts in the library and crochet club on Thursdays. Karen came to the Cooloola Coast eight years ago with her husband John and fell in love with the area and community. When not enjoying the surf, sand and natural surrounding, Karen is keen to keep supporting school families and the staff who hold the entire school together. Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131. Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture. Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona. Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness. Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark. Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

I ALL, well it’s been a tough month with weather and have only managed a handful of trips in. Those trips have been very productive with a great variety of Rainbow Beach reef fish and good quality. Pearl perch have been solid as they were also this time last year. Snapper have slowed a little, however still finding

In the straits, flathead have been in great numbers and size and absolutely loving the plastics, Jacks are also really starting to fire up.
Cobia have also been giving punters a bit of arm-stretching fun. Well, it should be any time now for the Mahi Mahi to start showing up, we caught some crackers last summer; so looking forward to some real sport with these guys.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Update ATCHES HAVE been reasonable lately, in spite of the winds, with reports from members of bream, flathead and cod being landed inside, plus plentiful whiting reported for those keen enough to rise early and get onto their favourite spots before the sun is up. Catches of Tailor have been also reported along the beaches at Inskip and Fraser and a few being caught on the inside, just south of The Bluff. The Club’s Annual Awards Presentation Day and Christmas Party was held at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club on Saturday November 17 and all 75 attendees had a great lunch and very enjoyable
afternoon social. The winners of the 23 various sections, hotly contested in some cases, were all rewarded with trophies as mementos of their efforts. Our special thanks for their ongoing support and attendance goes to Mayor Mick Curran and his wife Sue, plus Councillor Mark McDonald. The Club takes it a bit slow during the Christmas period due to the numbers of members away visiting family and family visiting here. Our activities liven up from early February with our first meeting for 2019 being programmed for February 12

Table Tennis has a new format T

ABLE TENNIS fourth and final competition for 2018 is underway in a new format where all players play two singles and two doubles games in the 6 to 8.30pm timeslot. Doubles partners are selected by the draw, so players have different partners every week, and also get to play all the other competitors in singles over the five week competition. Two groups of 12 competitors, graded level one or level two, are battling for glory, and despite some initial misgivings about the new arrangements, are now enjoying the extra competition experience. The new format means players are spending more time playing and watching games, which has provided more opportunity for mentoring, support and general barracking. Wednesday morning table tennis remains popular, and provides an excellent opportunity for some exercise and social engagement, 9 to 11am Wednesday mornings.

OW, IS ALL I can say every time the centre event competitions are held. Training sessions are really paying off as athletes in all age groups are improving in both skill and competition rules. Simple things like walking out the back of the throwing circle after shot put and discus are becoming second nature, which will ensure that every go counts and will not be lost to a technical foul. All track and field events will be recorded by the end of the first half of this season
and will be measured against achievement targets for Green Awards. Athletes are always reminded that despite competing in age groups the only times and measurements they need to beat is their own. In the recent 200m sprints there were several personal bests smashed and after several pleas to do so, even young Tiny Tot Bonnie Bate even ran the whole ‘big race.’ The Christmas Break up will be on December 15 where mid-season

Achievement Awards will be presented. I would like to thank all the parent helpers that assist with the Centre either setting/ packing up, taking on coaching roles, scribing records of events, photographing, administration and being a positive influence for the youth athletes. S THE 2018-2019 Gympie One Day Reserve Grade competition continues, Rainbow Beach Cricket Club is currently sitting top of the ladder, with a slight lead over Western Gympie. A forfeit win in round 2, bye in round 3, and a strong 46 run win over Harlequins in round 4 means Rainbow are in a brilliant position, come this point of the season. Harlequins put up a decent fight in the field keeping Rainbow Beach down to only 155. The run chase began and an excellent bowling spell from Richie O’Donohue (3-16) and Andrew Simpson (2-19) meant none of the Harlequins batsman could get the run chase going.
The win was confirmed when “Dazza” Timms took the important wicket of Slayter Murray (37) to wrap things up. Round 5 unfortunately ended in a loss for Rainbow Beach as Gympie Wests bowled and fielded well enough, so only Andrew Simpson (49) could make an impact with the bat. A Little Humour BAD WATER A Yorkshire farmer sees a bloke drinking from his stream and shouts, “Ey up, tha dunt wanna be drinkin watta frum theer, it’s full o’ hoss piss an’ cow shite an’ it could kill thee”. The bloke says: “Sir, I am a lawyer from the city, can you be speaking clearer, and slower please. ”The farmer replies: “If....You.... Use.... Two ...Hands.......You.... Won’t.... Spill ...Any.” GONE FISHING Two friends rented a boat and fished in a lake every day. One day they caught 30 fish. One guy said to his friend, “Mark this spot so that we can come back here again tomorrow.” The next day, when they were driving to rent the boat, the same guy asked his friend, “Did you mark that spot?” His friend replied, “Yeah, I put a big ‘X’ on the bottom of the boat.” The first one said, “You stupid fool! What if we don’t get that same boat today?” POLICE Driving to work, a gentleman had to swerve to avoid a box that fell out of a truck in front of him. Seconds later, two policemen came by. While one pulled the gentleman over, the second stopped traffic and recovered the box so as to avoid any further mishaps. When they opened the box, they found it contained large upholstery tacks. “I’m sorry sir,” the first trooper told the driver, “but I’m going to have to write you a ticket.” Amazed, the driver asked, “For what?!” The trooper replied, “Tacks evasion.” CAREER ADVICE “When I finished school, I took one of those career aptitude tests, and based on my verbal ability score, they suggested I become a mime.” - Tim Cavanagh
BLONDE ON A PLANE On a plane bound for New York the flight attendant approached a blonde sitting in the first class section and requested that she move to coach since she did not have a first class ticket. The blonde replied, “I’m blonde; I’m beautiful; I’m going to New York; and I’m not moving.” Not wanting to argue with a customer, the flight attendant asked the co-pilot to speak with her. He went to talk with the woman, asking her to please move out of the first class section. Again, the blonde replied, “I’m blonde; I’m beautiful; I’m going to New York, and I’m not moving.” The co-pilot returned to the cockpit and asked the captain what he should do. The captain said, “I’m married to a blonde, and I know how to handle this.” He went to the first class section and whispered in the blonde’s ear. She immediately jumped up and ran to the coach section mumbling to herself, “Why didn’t someone just say so?” Surprised, the flight attendant and the co-pilot asked what he said to her that finally convinced her to move from her seat. He said, “I told her the first class section wasn’t going to New York.” PARACHUTE JUMP A sergeant in a parachute regiment took part in several nighttime exercises. Once, he was seated next to a lieutenant fresh from Jump School. He was quiet and looked a bit pale, so the sergeant struck up a conversation. “Scared, Lieutenant?” he asked. “No, just a bit apprehensive.” the lieutenant replied. “What’s the difference?” asked the sergeant The lieutenant answered, “The difference is I’m scared with a university education.”

Hello again to all in Rainbow Beach land. As another Christmas approaches, it seems like only yesterday that we were at the last one. As you do get older it, I'm sure comes around quicker.
The start we needed with a win in the T20, hopefully will keep that record in tack, even with our top players si�ng on the sidelines a�er ge�ng caught, just a few to many cameras around to be doing that sort of thing.
I was surprised to see how many schoolies made Rainbow their des na on (even though it is not an official des na on), all appeared to be well behaved and having a good me.
With the coaching merry-go-round in the NRL it does seem a bit of a joke, wouldn't it be beneficial for both clubs to do the swap now.
It's definitely different than being down the Gold Coast, but you only generally leave school once, so as long as you have a happy and safe me. The weather has certainly turned it on for them and anyone else staying here at the moment, with the odd a�ernoon storm to cool it down, it's a pre�y good place to come to. Our thoughts do go out to the farmers doing it tough, the weather maybe good for us but they're in dire need of rain. We have had a new store manager start recently, (Kylie) with Bernie, who may be small in stature but certainly makes up in drive and personality, so if you're a�er anything specific, come in and ask for her.
As with Val Homes going to try his luck in the NFL, I thought it was a bit rich for Paul Gallen to give him a bit of a spray, but what more do you really expect of him. Good luck to him, maybe he won't crash and burn like the Hayne plane, and there's another story for some other me. Not much to talk about in the F1 ll next year, when hopefully the compe on is a bit closer and anyone else but Lewis wins. Well that's it for this month, the next le�er will be for January 19, can't wait?

We have been here for a few years, and never really had a problem with any storms or weather events, up un l recently. One lightning crack overhead and there goes the fridge, washing machine, TVs, pool pump and a few other things. Funny now we have surge protectors on everything! Now to the sports report.
