A choc-full Easter edition 100

YEARS FOR MONTVILLE MASONIC LODGE. We barely touch the history for this ‘foundation’ of Masons. (Aren’t collective nouns clever?) It is the month for birthdays - we also celebrate 20 years for Maleny Physiotherapy and 25 for the Maleny Swap Meet. Motorcycle Congratulations all! Joyce Newton also deserves our applause. So many years of selfless service to our community. I thank everyone who has contributed to this issue. I know like me, there's a few out there who had a late night writing, or scrambled through their photos to help us get it right. As a result - you can read about businesses, markets, events, a scholarship, exhibitions and a day of harmony. Once again, there's so much to choose from on the Hinterland. Personally, I'm looking forward to Alexander McCall Smith talking about the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books. Last night, our book club discussed one of the Women's Murder Club books by James Patterson. Well, it had his name on it, but we're wondering if he even read the thing - his 'co writer' made it so hard to believe!

I had about three pages to finish, but chose to bring McCall Smith's The House of Unexpected Sisters to our caravanning trip, rather than tarnish our weekend away. It was a good choice, well done Mma Ramotswe! Thank you to the schools who have contributed this month. If you haven't yet - please add my email to your school newsletter list. From under 5s to our teens, there are stories here for you, including some fun holiday ideas. Look out for nominations opening for your favourite business (newspapers are included)! 'The Glassys' open up again this month ready for a gala celebration in May. Until next month, enjoy the chocolate (Easter services are listed inside as well) and, I hope, a cooler first month of autumn,

AST MONTH THE Welcome2Maleny group hosted a special lunch and activities at the Neighbourhood Centre for many Karen refugee families. Lou Walsh from Welcome2Maleny said, "There are 128,000 Karen refugees living in camps on the Thailand-Burma border. "The day was a great success and friendships were established. Members of the Maleny community enjoyed sharing music, delicious food, activities and listening to stories with our new visitors. “This was a very special experience for the whole group and their time in Maleny will be a fond memory for a long time to come.” Harmony Day will be held on March 21 and this year all schools in Maleny – The River School, The Independent School, Maleny High School and the Primary School will be singing to the community as a united group. The theme for Harmony day this year is that We All Belong and To Say No To Racism. “Some of the High School students will be singing one of the songs for their musical this year, We're All In This Together, with the River School and State School kids joining in.

harmony

“The students will be performing in the middle of town next to Maleny Realty and Peace of Green at 9.30am,” said Lou. “Please come along and show your support.” Maleny State School and the High School will be holding a free dress day for Harmony Day in March. “Money raised last year was used to buy phone cards for people in detention on Manus and Nauru, as well as paying for a teacher's salary for three months to work with Rohingyan refugees that are being held in refugee camps overseas,” shared Lou. Funds raised this year will be donated to Welcome2Maleny, so that more welcome days can be offered to other refugee groups, and to also provide funding to help other displaced people in impoverished camps around the world. “Our Maleny community truly makes a difference!”

All along the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are architectural gems: buildings with character, homes that make a statement, Heritage-listed shops and halls. One house you can’t miss as you drive through Flaxton is the ‘A-Frame’ at the turn-off for Kondalilla Falls – but how did something so different arrive in that spot? HT writer Victoria McGuin went to learn more about the building and the family within it.

INDOW BOXES FULL of dahlias decorate the balcony and the patio of Les and Leonie Gittins’ home in Flaxton, a building with a roof that seems to extend from the ground to the sky, complete with ornate ironwork along its border. The house reminds me of a Swiss home, but Leonie found the design in an American magazine. I was curious to see inside, with visions of dramatic, sloped rooms and purposebuilt furniture to fit the space. The reality is slightly different, with internal walls created to give the main living areas a more rectangular look. The second floor, however, which houses the bedrooms, has plenty of vast, sloped wooden ceilings. And yet, it’s a cosy, intimate space - I feel like I should be in a period drama, writing with a quill by the window under the eaves!

Les spent most of his life as a professional welder, only retiring a few years ago. “We moved here in 1973 and built this house ourselves,” he tells me. “I did all the steel work, made the A-frame. “We hired a carpenter and a builder at times,” Les continues, “but we did the whole thing in fits and starts, when we could afford to. It’s still not finished! The outside needs work.” We are sitting in a bright, breezy kitchen with views to the ocean, although the trees over the road are slowly hiding parts of the horizon. “One day we won’t be able to see the ocean,” says Leonie, “but that’s okay, we’ve had many years with this lovely view.” When Les and Leonie first came to Flaxton, the land was a dairy farm. “We were trying to find a block for our first home,” explains Leonie. “Everywhere was too steep, and then we saw this. We went to ask the farmer if we could buy some land from him.” “He said, ‘Nah, not interested’,” Les continues. “But a few weeks later he said he was dividing the land into five blocks, so we bought our block.”

Opposite page: A house made with love Above: At the Deb Ball, Maleny School of Arts 1966 Below: Les and Leonie enjoy their green and pleasant land

“Over the road used to be all bananas and paw paws down the mountain,” says Leonie. “The landscape has changed so much.” Les is a Hinterland local, born in Maleny, with his parents running a farm in Conondale. “I spent most of my primary years in correspondence. “My mother was a teacher and didn’t think the local school, tucked up in Conondale, was good enough at the time, although I eventually went for a while. There was a bus which had to cross the creek 14 times to get us to school!” Les eventually went to the Maleny Rural School and would travel on the open-back, ex-cream truck. “I was horsing around one day and threw a friend’s hat across the bus and it flew off. “Ronnie Watt, the driver, had been in the Navy and was an Australian heavyweight boxing champ. He stopped the bus, threw the hat back… then he walked across the paddock and pulled a branch off a tree and stomped over. Luckily, he just gave me a good tongue-lashing, but I’ve never forgotten it! Big brute carrying half a tree over his shoulder!” he laughs. Les and Leonie met as members of the Maleny Junior Farmers group, which later became Rural Youth. Les says. “It’s state-wide organisation, mainly for training young country people in farming, cattle, judging – it was a social thing really. “I remember we put on a display of the casein product at the Nambour Show. It’s used as a coating for quality papers and glossy magazines, so we showed people how it began as milk one end, and casein came out the other.” “There are probably records of the process in the old Butter Factory in Landsborough,” adds Leonie. The couple married in Maleny 50 years ago, living on the farm owned by Les and his parents, where Baroon Pocket Dam now sits. “We lived there for seven years,” Les shares. “The original cottage was made of pit-sawn beech. “We sold up a few years before the dam was down there, and the cottage was dismantled and put in a shed by the next owners – it might still be there.” Les taught himself to weld on the farm, then worked with Hoopers Engineering in Montville before buying a business in Kunda Park. “Steel, framework, tanks and fabrication – I had a workshop for 18 years.” “He has a welder at home,” Leonie says, “So he is still often making, adjusting and fixings things for people.” As for the A-frame, Les found it simple to make in steel. “I put up the frame first, then the roof and the lining, although it wasn’t smooth sailing, with awkward angles to cut.” “Also, inside the house the angles were too sharp for furniture, so we had to modify them. And there still aren’t enough flat walls for my quilts!” Leonie laments. Indeed, quilts, patchwork and sewing all factor heavily. Leonie has a long-arm pulling machine and over 20 antique Singer sewing machines on various shelves throughout the ground floor. “I worked as a governess for a while, then did dressmaking and sewing, working part-time in a few shops. Once the children (they have five) were all grown I worked in fabric and sewing machine shops, and I taught sewing classes.”

PRINTMAKING ART WORKSHOPS

Leonie makes quilts, bags and clothing for the Sunshine Linus Club, the Women’s Refuge and many other groups. Her work is prolific and varied, some taking her a few weeks, others a few years. Everything here it seems is a labour of love – from the house itself and the vegetable gardens, to Leonie’s quilts and the furniture Les had made to accommodate his wife’s artistic work. And so, this building is no longer just the ‘A -frame’ or ‘Swiss house’ to me, it is the ever-evolving home of the Gittins’ family: full of memories, hard work, imagination and love. Long may it stand.

AMILY, BUSINESS AND community are intertwined for Tim and Mary Bagshaw, two of Maleny’s favourite physiotherapists. It has taken years, twenty to be exact, to build the standing they hold in Maleny. “I was living in Goondiwindi when I bought the practice,” said Tim. “Stephanie McLennan was selling Maleny Physiotherapy, and I decided Maleny would be an ideal place to live.” He began in a small building, not more than a garage, behind Maple House then, in 2000, Mary left her position at

Royal Brisbane Hospital to marry Tim and join him in the practice. When their first son, David, was born in 2002, Mary’s parents moved to Maleny. When George came along in 2005, Tim’s parents followed. Running a successful business for 20 years is quite an achievement, let alone one that involves a husband and wife team. I asked Mary how she coped as a young mother of two boys. “We owe so much to our extended family,” said Mary, “they were really supportive. Always prepared to help out with the boys. We could not have done it without them”.

This support enabled Tim and Mary to achieve their ideal of being able to not only run their practice, but also to give to the community they loved. A lot of their community involvement stems from the boys’ activities. Tim took on the post of president while they attended kindergarten. “When the boys were old enough to play sport, we joined an AFL club in Kawana and I coached the team for ten years.,” he said. As a youngster in South Australia, Tim had played AFL. “We moved to Queensland when I was ten, and I went on to play hockey and rugby, but I have always really liked the AFL program.” Mary and Tim also provide physiotherapy support for the Bushrangers Rugby Union Club at Witta, and Mary was president of the Maleny Gym for six years where Maleny Physiotherapy holds weekly classes for members of Blackall Range Care Group and, every day for the past 20 years,

Tim has spent time at the Maleny Hospital. Tim’s other passion is the Apex Club. “I joined when I first came to Maleny after being asked by a friend that I went to University with. I started at Maleny Physio on March 2, 1998 and went to my first Apex meeting that night!” He remained in Apex for 18 years until he turned 45 and was no longer eligible to be a member. “A highlight for me was organising the Apex Qld State Convention in 2007. We had 300 delegates for three days in Maleny and had a great time. Kevin Borich and his band played on the Friday night and apparently, they could hear him at Witta! “Mary and the boys have both been part of the Maleny Apex family, and we have made some great friends through the club.” He is now a Life Member. Mary continued: “He has been deeply involved for all the time he has lived here. Everything from being MC for the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremonies — for which he has to undergo training every year; they are very formal affairs — to cooking prawn kebabs at the street carnival. “And then there’s cooking breakfast at the showgrounds on Australia Day, organising the bar for the Maleny Show, the list is endless.” Other organisations also value this man. The Rotary Foundation named him a Paul Harris Fellow “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world”. Tim and Mary each have their specialty areas: Tim focuses on back pain, sporting injuries, orthopaedics and injury prevention; Mary, with a Master of Physiotherapy Studies in Cardiorespiratory, enjoys treating general areas of physiotherapy including orthopaedic conditions, lymphoedema, and general physiotherapy. Over the years the practice has expanded to include a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, vestibular rehabilitation

physiotherapist and podiatrists. For the past 12 years, Tim has also worked tirelessly towards the realisation of a community hydrotherapy pool in Maleny. As a committee member, he has been through times of frustration when the goalposts kept moving, but he is reasonably optimistic that the pool will become a reality “within the foreseeable future” when the community pool is relocated to the Precinct. I left Tim and Mary to get on with their busy lives, a little in awe of the energy and drive this couple maintain, and the very real difference they are making to the people of Maleny.

Would you donate your body to The word ‘donation’ conjures up the idea of giving to charity. It is something a person chooses to give away: money, goods, services. It’s usually a feel-good process. However, in the case of a loved one donating their body to science, the bequest may unlock the proverbial Pandora’s Box.

If someone says !"#$%!&'($$!)*+%"(%,-. ... ask me!

ETTY ERRINGTON WAS a woman who knew her own mind even at a young age. Her daughters recall that she was Australia’s first woman radio announcer at 3BO Bendigo in the 1930s; then moved to Cairns against her father’s wishes, established a women’s club and hosted women’s and children’s sessions at 4CA. When war broke out, Betty joined the WRAAF and held the position of Recruitment Officer. She flew around Australia in Lancaster Bombers to recruit women. Maleny sisters, Bev Hannam and Ruth Drynan, shared stories about their mother’s end-of-life choice to donate her body to science. Ruth was first in the family to become aware of their mother’s decision.

“One day after work, I popped in to visit Mum. She was sitting at the table with her friend, Connie, they were having a gin and tonic and laughing. The table was strewn with paperwork. They said, we’re glad you came, we need a witness. “They told me what it was about but it was all very lighthearted so I signed, witnessing their signatures as requested. I didn’t think too much more about it until the news filtered through the family.” Bev, who worked in the medical profession had a vastly different reaction. “What happened and how it works is that a spokesman for the Faculty of Medicine at Queensland University was a guest speaker at the retirement village. He provided key facts about the process of body donation. As far as I know, Mum and Connie were the only two who signed up quickly.

“I remember Ruth and the others thought it was an honourable thing to do but I was a nurse and never comfortable with the idea. I also lived at St Lucia which was near the university where her body would be taken. That alone was unsettling.” While speaking with Bev she reflected on the friendship between her mother and Connie. “Mum was aged 86 and Connie 96 when I first knew of their decision to donate their body to science. “They had been friends since their 20s and lived in a retirement village. Each Monday night, Connie would usually make her way to Mum’s place in the dark assisted by her walking frame. They would have dinner and Mum would walk back home with her. They were great mates.” Universities body donation programs provide students the opportunity to examine and dissect human bodies. It’s that hands-on experience that supports biomedical science, groundbreaking research and creates surgeons of the future. While daughter Ruth initially accepted her mother’s end of life choice, there was a delayed reaction. “I had my moments because I’d never thought about somebody close to me doing this. It would hit me all of a sudden but I kept it to myself. As it got closer I found the idea quite confronting. “Mum had a stroke when she was 88. Then a year to the day, she had a second stroke and was taken to Redcliffe Hospital. She died five days later.”

Bev, who was still struggling with the idea of her mother’s choice, had accepted the inevitable in honour of her wishes. She elaborated: “The doctor said he would ring the university and update them on the situation. After discussion, they rejected the body on the basis that in the year since her first stroke she’d become wasted.” On hearing this news Bev felt relieved. However, the acceptance then rejection created a sense of chaos amidst dealing with immense grief. “We had gotten to a point where all had accepted Mum’s wishes and then all of a sudden it changed. Then we had to make arrangements that we’d not previously thought about. “It was a shock to realise we had to change tack very quickly. Add to that the fact that Mum always said she didn’t want to be present at her own funeral,” said Bev. Reflecting on the process of her mother’s passing Ruth acknowledged the value of such an altruistic act as her mother had intended. “It’s important for the person making this choice to speak with their family who in turn should educate themselves to the pros and cons of such a decision. Also know that things can change from when you sign on the dotted line to when you die.” Betty died in 2006 and Connie in 2010 when she was 99 ¾. Ruth and Bev visited Connie just prior to her passing, shared stories and laughter. Her choice of donating her body to science came to fruition.

In speaking with Ruth and Bev I am left with a sense of two amazing women who forged a friendship and blazed a trail in spite of war, raising families and distance. Their ‘wise woman’ years were effulgent. I have a feeling that somewhere in the great beyond Betty and Connie are quaffing a gin and tonic, leaving a trail of laughter and mischief in their wake. HE ELDEST OF THREE, Joyce Ann Eisnaugle was born in 1949 in Ohio, USA. Her childhood was one of piano lessons, Sunday school, choir and Girl Scouts. Joyce’s school years were an educational adventure. During grades 4 – 6 she went to summer school for two years to learn Spanish. She recollects: “In junior high I wanted to be a doctor, entered a science fair project on genetics and won!” A ’straight A’ student in high school, Joyce was accepted into Miami University, Ohio. In December ’71 she travelled to Athens, Greece to complete her student teaching as a high school science teacher at an American Community School. “After touchdown at Milan airport, my two girlfriends and I met a tall, handsome Kiwi. His name was Gregory Philip Newton. He decided to see what Americans do overseas, came with us and stayed for two days. “On the last night he proposed saying he was going to have a farm in Australia one day. He asked if I wanted to come and live with him on the farm. I said, yes!” Greg and Joyce Newton immigrated to Australia in July 1974. A month later they found their way to Maleny.

“Colin Cork showed us some farms for sale. Our parents loaned us start-up money and the farmer let us pay off the rest. Greg milked 25 cows in the first milking but could not fill the two-gallon bucket. “You could see through the floorboards to the ground in our farmhouse but it was cool in summer. In winter, I used the oven to warm my hands so I could type. “They took bets in town as to how long we would last but didn’t count on the Education Department hiring me to teach at the Maleny State School. “We lived on the other side of the Obi Obi Creek with a cement crossing. When it flooded I had to use a flying fox to get to the school bus. It terrified me. I used to turn up to school in gumboots and jeans with my clothes in a bag. Later, Greg built a swinging bridge which made it a bit easier.” Four children completed the Newton family between 1978 and 1985. All were born in the old Maleny hospital the youngest being the last before it closed signifying the end of hospital maternity in Maleny. Joyce resigned from the Education Department in favour of family, then turned her attention to community matters. “In the late 70s we started raising money for a community pool. A decision was made to put it in the school grounds since the Education Department offered the land in partnership. This was the first public/government partnership of its kind.

Dr Tasneem Sultana to the practice “Greg and I were on the committee. We raised money from talent shows, auctioning cows donated by farmers and things like ‘buy a sign on the diving blocks’. In 1983 we opened our school/community pool. The community raised $120,000.” During the early 1980s Joyce ran the Maleny Blood Bank each month at the hospital, and with a young daughter in tow, little Jennifer handed out biscuits to those who had donated. Relentless in her endeavours Joyce Newton was also instrumental in setting up a nursing mothers group in Maleny, followed by the establishment of a playgroup and kindergarten. The 80s continued to be a whirlwind for Joyce.“While secretary and then vice president of Maleny Swimming Club, I worked on improving pool facilities. We built the first LTS (Learn to Swim) pool and swimming club house. I’m now an Honorary Life Member. “I was also on the Maleny Soccer Club executive for over 10 years and awarded life membership in 1995.” Life for the Newtons wasn’t all rose gardens and family celebrations. Their farm at Baroon Pocket was under threat with the prospect of a dam. Greg Newton formed the Baroon Pocket Landholder’s Group but to no avail. “In 1986 Greg and I took the Water Board to the Land Court and won. We even got salvage rights. We sold our house, donated soil to the primary school to sell as a fundraiser and moved to Witta. Baroon Pocket filled with the first storm in December, 1987.” Joyce’s tornado-like energy continued and from 1988-92 she was District Leader for Maleny Girl Guides. As president of the Maleny State School P&C she instigated ‘room mothers’ and ‘meet the teacher’s night’.

Year book editors Kathy Haas and Joyce Eisnaugle - 1968

“The proudest achievement in my educational career was while teaching at Maleny High School. We implemented RTC (Responsible Thinking Classroom). Children were not told how to act but taught how to think about their actions. This was transformative for the culture of the high school and is still used today. “In ’98 as president of Maleny High School P&C, I helped finish fundraising and drawing up of plans for the Maleny Indoor Activities Centre and saw it to completion.” Due to a downturn in the dairy industry the Newtons bought a sheep/beef property in Tenterfield. Joyce didn’t want to leave Maleny and struck a bargain with her husband to return in five years. After being honoured with Citizen of the Year Award by Caloundra City Council in 1999 Joyce Newton graduated from USQ the following year with a Masters in Educational Guidance Counselling. Joyce thrived on committees and in 2005 was elected onto the Maleny Community Centre Management Committee which led to her input on the building sub-committee. She also contributed to the Council’s Cultural Precinct Study but left in favour of her interest in politics. “In 1986, I founded the Maleny/Conondale women’s branch of the National Party.” Joyce became secretary of the Glasshouse State Electoral Council, then Chair from 2008 until May 2017.Greg and Joyce are Honorary Life Members of the LNP. In various ways Joyce was a driving force behind the Maleny Community Precinct which planned to include an aquatic facility. In 2014, Maleny and District Indoor Aquatic and Fitness Centre steering committee was formed. “I re-joined the Maleny Girl Guide’s Support Group early in 2016. Grants were obtained and money raised through raffles to remove asbestos and refurbish the hut. The group honoured my years of service with a ‘Golden Friend of Guiding’ award.” In February 2017, Joyce was diagnosed with MND and lost the ability to speak. However, always one to meet a challenge she progresses with the support of her husband and family. An adoring grandparent of six, Joyce is now an executive on the ‘grandchildren committee’. She can be found at swimming and soccer carnivals, theatre and class presentations and of course grandparent’s day at school. Joyce Newton, a woman whose unrelenting drive made a difference. One whose grandmother was half Shawnee Indian, seems to be encapsulated in this native American Indian quote: A strong woman knows she has strength for the journey, but a woman of strength knows it is in the journey where she will be strong.

DEFAMATION BEWARE

DEFAMATION concerns the public communication of words, gestures, images or acts that are likely to lower the esteem of the person to whom such communication is targeted. The Queensland Defamation Act of 2005 applies to defamatory information published on or after 1 January 2006.

100 years FOR THE

The Freemasons have historically been shrouded in mystery to the uninitiated, so it is good to read how a local Lodge was formed, thanks to the information garnered from Wor. Master John Watson.

F

For a message to be defamatory it must be communicated in some way and the Act has defined such methods of communicating as: • •

• • •

an article, report, advertisement etc. communicated by a newspaper, magazine or other periodical; a program, report, advertisement etc. communicated by television, radio, internet or other forms of electronic communication; a letter, note or other writing; a picture, gesture or verbal utterance; and any other material or means by which something may be communicated to a person.

The message is deemed to be defamatory if it: • • • •

lowers the concerned person’s reputation; leads others to think less of that person; makes others shun or avoid that person; and cause others to ridicule, hate or despise them.

There are several distinct defences to an action for defamation which are all noted in the Act and some of these are: • •

JUSTIFICATION – the truth alone is the defence here; ABSOLUTE PRIVILEGE – this defence is available when one can prove that the document was published on an occasion of absolute privilege such as parliamentary matters and publications; PUBLIC DOCUMENTS – this defence is available if the publication is from a public document and the information was published honestly for the advancement of education or for informing the public ; QUALIFIED PRIVILEGE – if the recipient of the defamatory matter has an interest in the information contained in the publication such as a scenario where the information was published in the course of giving that information to that person; HONEST OPINION – if the publication expresses an opinion that is honestly held by the author as opposed to a statement of fact and the opinion was based on proper material that is substantially true; TRIVIALITY – where the aggrieved person is unlikely to suffer any harm.

It is also worth noting that an apology made to an aggrieved person will not constitute an admission of fault or liability.

Tove is Easton Lawyers’ full time principal lawyer and also the Hinterland’s longest serving principal lawyer serving since January 2004. She specializes in all commercial law matters as well as wills and estates, leases, partnership and company matters. She has always had a policy of providing the first consultation free of charge. That gives clients peace of mind that they are not up for legal fees before they have even had advice on their questions.

MONTVILLE MASONIC LODGE

Wor. Bro. W.H. Harvey, Foundation Master of the Lodge, made the land available on which the Lodge stands today - the title was bequeathed by his wife

REEMASONRY IN THE Blackall Range/Sunshine Coast region was established early in the 20th century at Waverley Lodge (Woombye) 1906, Palmwoods 1915. Montville was at this time served only by a primitive road to the Palmwoods railhead. It was therefore inevitable that Montville Freemasons would eventually seek to establish a Lodge on the Range. On October 4, 1917 at the Montville School of Arts (now the Montville Village Hall) at least six of these Freemasons met, presided over by Worshipful Brother W.H.Harvey. It was decided (proposed Brother C.H.Bundy, seconded Brother D.G.Unwin) "that a Masonic Lodge be formed under the Scottish Constitution". The Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge of Queensland was petitioned to grant a charter to this yetto-be-born Lodge, together with seeking his concurrence that the School of Arts Hall be used as the Lodge's venue. The meeting adjourned for 14 days to await a response. The Lodge was consecrated on March 9, 1918. The District Grand Master (Right Worshipful Brother Thomas J Burstow) travelled to Palmwoods by train, and thence by buggy to Montville to conduct the ceremony. He was assisted by Worshipful Brother Harvey and a full complement (14) of Grand Lodge officers. The Lodge was designated "Montville Lodge Number 1173, Scottish Constitution".

Right: The Grand Lodge team are pictured outside Montville Masonic Lodge in 2015, at the Wor. Master John Watson's Installation ceremony Image Ross Robertson

Below: Four members of the Butt Lodge dynasty: Wor. Bro. G.J. Butt Senior was a Foundation member, his son G.J. Junior and grandson Harry were members with his great grandson Graham, active in the Lodge currently

Among those invested was Brother GJ Butt, Great Grandfather of W Bro Graham Butt, who continues an unbroken line of Butts from inception to today. In 1921 the Lodge transferred from the Scottish Grand Lodge to the newly created Queensland Grand Lodge. In the same year the Lodge removed from the School of Arts Hall to a new building on the present Lodge site. As part of the transfer across, the Lodge was designated first as Lodge Number 189 (provisional) and then to its present identity: Lodge Number 260. In 1965 the Lodge was burgled: five bottles of beer and eighteen of soft drink. Possibly not organised crime – even in those days. By 1980 the new Lodge building was not so new, and in 1981 a new building was erected. The foundation

stone was laid by Right Worshipful Brother (RWBro) Harry Butt and the lodge was consecrated on September 25, 1982.In 1987 an award was created, the Harry Butt Memorial Citizenship Award, and has thereafter been presented to a pupil leaving Montville State Primary School. On March 6, 1993 the Lodge celebrated its 75th Jubilee. On March 17, 2018 at 2pm the Lodge will celebrate its Centenary. The Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland and a team of his Grand Lodge officers will formally conduct a reconsecration of the Lodge. This is an open meeting to which the non-masonic public are welcome. Gentlemen attending are requested to dress accordingly. A tie would not be out of place.

Irish inspiration at Finbars

Rob Longstaff is a New Zealand-born, Australian-bred, Berlinbased Soul/Pop musician and he's playing on St Patrick's day at Finbars Maleny

ATURDAy MARCH 17 is a time to celebrate all things irish for St Patrick’s Day, at Finbars in Maleny! The Guinness is flowing, there is a fine selection of irish whiskey to warm the belly, and the wood-fired pizza oven is roaring, so come down and enjoy the atmosphere! From 11am- 2pm you can enjoy the sounds of traditional irish instrumentals. Mark Dunbar says, "We have a fortnightly Celtic music session at Finbars, and we're expanding on that with an opportunity for any musicians to come along and have a play - an inclusive session. "With irish music, people tend to learn a body of tunes and they play and sing informally. This traditionally happened in pubs in ireland and now all over the world. Enter at your own level or ability and have a good time!” (The Celtic sessions take place on the first and third Sundays of the month, if you’d like to take part in the future.) Then from 2pm to 9pm join Max Sportelli and Rob Longstaff for an afternoon and evening of all your favourite soul, blues, reggae and pop hits, some solid originals and of course a little irish folk. See you there!

That’s one and a half million kilos, about 715 cars, or four jumbo jets! Unfortunately aluminium doesn’t degrade easily, it actually contaminates the soil for 500 years. Add

to this the waste of plastics, colour tubes, cut hair and more, and you soon see that beauty at any price is no longer an option. "I believe businesses must act responsibly in their communities. Our sustainability program can reduce waste, allowing us to do our small part to improve the global situation, locally." After joining Sustainable Salons Australia (SSA), Oneroom2 on Maple now recycles 95% of its waste. Rather than contaminating the waterways, excess shampoo and hair colour waste now go to a chemical recycler. Plastics are also recycled into construction material and gardening equipment. What’s more, proceeds from recycling benefit the community through several programs. Every kilo of recycled aluminium helps Oz Harvest fund four meals for the homeless. Ponytails go to the Variety Charity to provide wigs to children with alopecia, while cut hair is made into containment booms used to absorb oil spills. So, make a visit to the team and combine an indulgent experience with creating the perfect look for you - and look after our environment!

After the storm comes the clean up!

A

Jewellery Laurisha Jewellery

FtEr dodGInG a few storm fronts - last month we saw a wild storm cut a swathe through Montville and parts of Flaxton and dulong. apart from the phenomenal light show, this storm packed some serious gusts causing considerable damage to our leafy villages. Soon after the battering, locals, the Fire Brigade and our local Montville rural Fire Service were out inspecting the damage and clearing away some road debris. the leaves had barely settled and we had Energex crews up removing trees and reconnecting lines. Whilst most of us were nestled inside, the SES were helping those in need. Saturday morning saw leaves and limbs scattered far and wide and a mammoth response from the Sunshine coast council with arborist teams lining the Main Street

and razorback. With extensive tree damage, Main roads shut down hunchy road and kept our visitors away from the danger spots. Visitors were able to enjoy their visit as the teams worked flat out. Sunday saw even more tree service teams complete with cranes and mulchers arrive. at one stage there was close to 50 arborists in the village along Main Street, in the school grounds and in russell Family Park. considering the ferocity of the storm, there was very little structural damage to our infrastructure. Whilst huge boughs fell from our magnificent Moreton Bay Figs, they barely grazed our heritage halls and St Mary’s church. What is even more fortunate is the way in which the community and the local authorities pitched in so Montville was open to welcome visitors over the weekend. So often we find reason to complain but in this instance the court of public opinion has given all those who contributed to the clean up a huge thank you for a job well done. congratulations to all those who pitched in to help neighbours and clean up our beautiful village and in particular a thumbs up to the Sunshine coast council who organised many of the contractors.

IVE VEry different hinterland artists are coming together in a fascinating exhibition of works on or with paper, to be held at the old Witta School on Easter Saturday and Sunday (March 31 and april 1). ‘Paper 2’ is the second incarnation of artists Peter hudson, donald Greenfield and atto Zazura, joined this year by corrie Wright and david Bongiorno. the narrative running through these works continues the tradition of uncompromising artistry established in the inaugural ‘Paper’ in 2013. this visual feast will feature mixed media works from hudson that comment on and question our relationship with the earth and nature. Greenfield’s collages are a pivotal development in his use of paper, promising to captivate and reward intense scrutiny.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz The Trauma Cleaner

Visiting You

by Heather Morris

by Sarah Kranostein

by Rebecka Sharpe Shelberg

there have been many books about the holocaust and there will be many more. What makes this one so memorable is Lale Sokolov's incredible zest for life. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two Slovakian Jews who survived auschwitz. In that horrid place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival. terrible though this story is, it is a story of hope and of courage and almost unbelievably- it is a love story. Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified and shaking, was a young girl. For Lale, it was love at first sight, and he determined not only to survive himself but to ensure that Gita did, too. his story - their story - will make you weep, but it will also uplift you. It shows the very best of humanity in the very worst of circumstances.

Before she was a trauma cleaner, Sandra Pankhurst was many things: husband and father, drag queen, gender reassignment patient, sex worker, small businesswoman, trophy wife. . . But as a little boy, raised in violence and excluded from the family home, she just wanted to belong. now she believes her clients deserve no less. this is a remarkable debut. Both in the quality of the writing and the treatment of the subject matter; trauma and its impact. Krasnostein considers the question of human trauma and its aftermath through a compelling and empathetic biography of Sandra Pankhurst, a woman who creates order for people who have experienced trauma, a woman who has experienced her own deep traumas. But she does more than just clean for them. She listens to them with genuine compassion and without judgment, talks to them as whole people who have a place in the world and who deserve care, and creates order in their houses. an extraordinary book about an extraordinary person. The Trauma Cleaner has been chosen as the ‘Big Book Club Book’ for 2018 Celebration of Books.

Setting out to visit a loved one, a child curiously asks a fellow commuter, "Who are you going to visit?" In answer to this simple question, the child learns about the love and loss in the life of a stranger: a father who lives apart from his small daughter, a husband who has lost his wife, a granddaughter who is forgotten by her grandfather, and a mother who fears for her son’s recovery. after each conversation, the child understands that the other commuters have someone in their lives that they love "as much as I love you," and discovers that we all are bound by the common experience of love, that appearances can be deceiving, and that it’s our similarities, not our differences, that matter most.

S

EVEn Story SEatS have been built, and there are three more planned across the region - why not head off on an adventure to find all ten? as ht is being delivered, the latest story seat will be officially opened in Kenilworth town Park by councillor Greg rogerson, with artwork from Bertha and Bear by christine Sharp. already on the hinterland, we have a story seat at Pioneer Park, Landsborough and Montville's was launched last month. Well-known children's books have been chosen for the artwork, and in russell Family Park, you'll find that The children who loved books by Montville's very own children's author, Peter carnavas, is featured. Published in 2012, his story is a celebration of books and the way they bring us together. award-winning author and illustrator, Peter's books sell internationally, translated into many different languages and even on aBc’s show Play School. community Portfolio and division 5 councillor Jenny McKay said the story seats were a great part of the First 5 Forever early childhood literacy program.

“Families with children under five can explore the magic of storytelling at the purpose-built story seats,” cr McKay said. “Sunshine coast Libraries has been granted $1 million over four years by the Queensland Government to implement the First 5 Forever program. “the aim of this universal family literacy program is to support strong language and literacy environments for young children from 0–5 years and their families. designed by council’s Parks and Gardens area, the colourful seats invite families to engage in storytelling, active play, singing and reading. So set your map and find them all, take a picture with the seats and share on social media using the hashtag #Storyseat. Visit council’s library website for more details.

Aren liVeS in a crooked cottage on Sydney’s north Shore where her studio overlooks parklands dotted with the headstones of Sydney’s early settlers. Amidst an array of random curios, amassed because they are interesting and accompanied by her pug Bronte, she paints worlds that explore connections and disconnections. Prior to living in Sydney, Karen lived on an isolated farm in north Western Victoria, a land of huge clear blue skies and endless expanses of flat red soil. The soundtrack of her life then was sheep, birdsong, sheepdogs, cattle, the whinny of horses, distant rumbles of headers and tractors and the wind singing through the she-oaks. She has painted obsessively her entire life, filling sketchbooks with great menageries of animals and feels the need to paint every day. The paintings incorporate landscapes of places she knows well that have an emotional resonance, and she uses these places as ‘theatres’ for her characters to tell their stories. every aspect of Karen’s paintings has symbolic meaning for her, the lonely chair in the landscape refers to a red bentwood chair she once saw standing in an arid paddock on a Wimmera farm while there with a shearing team. She found it beautiful, and odd and inexplicably moving. Horses are a subject she returns to over and over, a profound love in her life, and symbolic of freedom and power and a link to her Scandinavian heritage and the horses of norse myths. Karen’s pugs are constant companions throughout her life, and appear in her paintings regularly, always happy to model and pose, their tragic faces and clownish behaviour and absolute loyalty making them irresistible. Karen’s paintings are shown permanently at Montville Art Gallery, 138 Main Street, Montville 4560 and are also shown on our website: www.montvilleartgallery.com.au

Local children's author, Peter Carnavas, helped launch Montville's story seat where pages from his book The children who loved books are featured

Suicide prevention workshop Maleny neighbourhood centre has been involved in Suicide Prevention for almost 12 months now. the aim of our local working group, Maleny Wellbeing Group, is to educate as many locals as possible with tools and resources around Suicide Prevention. SafetaLK is a 3-hour training workshop, to increase suicide alertness, which will contribute to a suicide-safer community at 9.30am, March 10. this training is available to any persons over the age of 17 years. no specific background experience or qualifications are required, $15 per person at Maleny rSL. If we could get one or two people from each organisation to participate over this year at any one of the four sessions, it would make a significant impact on our local hinterland community. Mungo MacCallum

Adani B

ILL ShortEn has finally taken a firm position on the adani coal mine: procrastination. the opposition leader tells us that when (not if – there can surely be no doubt of it) Labor becomes government, he will make a decision. and as is almost always the case with our alternative prime minister, it is not clear just what that means. Shorten has virtuously ruled out tearing up contracts, which removes at least part of the sovereign risk involved the venture. Instead he has apparently discussed ways of means of finding further loopholes in the Environment and Biodiversity conservation act, which may be somewhat more difficult. over the years adani has negotiated its way through a myriad of objections by various activist groups, most recently the Wilderness Society, and the company has eventually won, achieving both the federal and state permissions needed. the idea that there can still be more wiggle room may be wishful thinking. But the mere fact that Shorten has been talking about it – even if semi-privately – will give Gautam adani and his fellow moguls something else to worry about, and of course that was the real point of the exercise. the revelation came from the philanthropic greenie Geoff cousins, a long time opponent of adani who took Shorten on a working trip (not, in spite of Malcolm turnbull’s attempted put down, a junket) to the Great Barrier reef and beyond in an attempt to get the ultra-cautious politician off the fence; to make him say, in the manner of Bob hawke with the Franklin dam, that he would do everything in his power to scuttle adani. and he would make it an issue in the next election. Shorten, no Bob hawke, has not and will not do so – at least not without overwhelming support in the polls, or at least enough of it to blunt any backlash from regional Queensland. So he continues the line that adani is dubious but mining is fine. the implication seems to be that if he can just get adani off the table, the rest of the Galilee Basin can be exploited without hindrance. this, of course, would be deeply unsatisfactory to the green movement, which wants, at a minimum, a guarantee of no new coal mines and ultimately the demise of those which are already operating. obviously this will not happen in the foreseeable future, so for the moment the attention is on adani, and there are some signs that the conglomerate is starting to weigh up whether to cut its already considerable losses. the company’s normal business model is to work through compliant governments to extract concessions, subsidies and whatever perks are available in order to rape and pillage the local economy – to demand feather bedding to the point of corruption. It has had great success in its native India, but its tentacles have spread among many vulnerable economies across the world. thus when it cast its beady and greedy eyes on australia, it assumed that the pattern would be the same. and at first it appeared that all was going to plan. the feds were enthusiastic: there was a promise (well, at least a wink

and nudge) that a lazy billion dollars could be found for a very cheap and probably never to be repaid loan to finance a railway from the mine to abbott Point before shipping the coal across the reef and wherever it could find customers. the Queensland government instantly offered a long financial holiday so no actual royalties had to be paid. the fantasy of an El dorado in an economically deprived area was promulgated: someone pulled the figure of 10,000 new jobs out of a hat, a number which has been tirelessly repeated in spite the fact (admitted by adani itself ) that the reality would be little more than a tenth of the propaganda. the public had visions of the new, endless reprise of the resources boom for the lucky country. It was all go. But then things started to turn sour. the demand for coal, and especially for dirty thermal coal, was not endless: if it had to stand on its own merits (which adani had no intention of doing – why break the habit of a lifetime) the mine might not be quite the bonanza the spin masters were spruiking. Local banks, encouraged by a forceful and effective campaign from environmentalists, decided that perhaps there were wiser and less controversial investments for their funds. then, unexpectedly, the Queensland government kyboshed the Infrastructure Fund’s billion dollar loan to the railway. Given that adani had previously maintained that it didn’t really need the money anyway, this should not have been a deal-breaker, and in itself it wasn’t; but it was another stumbling block on what was meant to be an untroubled way to an offshore tax haven. and the anti-adani movement was ramping up; the company had already deferred its starting date seven separate times, with the prospect of more to come. So there is little doubt that if Shorten was prepared to announce that Labor was off the cart, it would be a serious blow. cousins certainly thought so, which is why he was putting the screws on Shorten to take the plunge: he has said that if this happened, the project would be killed stone dead. the theory was that Shorten would not have to explain how or when he would act in government: the mere fact of a wellpublicised withdrawal of any support for adani would be sufficient, and the theory may well be right. Shorten is not yet ready to test it; however, sooner rather than later he may have no choice. turnbull and his troops have apparently convinced the public that the opposition leader is two faced, prepared to say whatever suits his audience, is devious and untrustworthy and must therefore be rejected by the voters. Shorten can probably wear the opprobrium, as long as his polling holds up, but the hard heads in the aLP backrooms may be less sanguine. there is an old schoolyard joke which goes thus: Question: how do you keep an idiot in suspense? answer: I’ll tell you next week. the voters will not be taken for idiots forever. Procrastination may be a tactic but it is not a long term strategy, must less a policy. one way or another, Shorten has to decide.

We are very proud of the entire year 6 for their public speaking, which some find quite nerve-wracking, and for the excellent leadership qualities and kindness they already display. What wonderful examples they set for the younger students! the School Leader ceremony was completed with all of the year 6 students on stage reciting their declaration to everyone present, followed by applause, cheers and a big slice of cake!

Myrtle Rust Seventh Anniversary

I

t’S BEEn 7 yEarS since a small, but extremely aggressive fungi by the name of Puccinia psidii (Myrtle rust) arrived in South East Queensland. this introduced fungi skipped past Biosecurity about 8 years ago, arriving first in central nSW and then quickly spreading. Its impact on many species from the Myrtle Family, particularly some of our less common rainforest myrtles will continue for decades and centuries to come. Public and Political response has been insignificant in the face of such a devastating arrival, after all it has no obvious direct impact on us. no effects on our food crops or livestock, no damage to our forestry industries (yet), minor inconveniences in the garden (with a few plants having to be removed), little effect if any on our economy. But in the rainforests and woodlands of the real australia it’s a different story. Myrtle rust attacks foliage, flowers, stems of many members of the Myrtle Family MyrtacEaE. the most obvious distinguishing feature is the yellow spore present on infected leaves. Some plants such as native Guava Rhodomyrtus psidioides, thready-bark Myrtle Gossia inophloia and Scrub Ironwood Rhodamnia rubescens have lost the majority of their foliage and either died, or are barely hanging on. Many plants are stricken to varying degrees, that may range from a few spots

on the leaves to only the new growth being affected. however even plants that are infected in a minor way on their foliage, may be rendered infertile, with reduced energy production for flowers and fruit. no flowers, no fruit, no seed means they are the living dead, with extinction around the corner... not all species of the Myrtle family appear to be susceptible to Myrtle rust, yet. For example, our Eucalypts, Melaleucas and many other woodland and heathland myrtles are unaffected or only suffering very minor damage. In the rainforest and gardens our ever popular Lillypilly’s are also ok. as horticulturalists were also selecting Myrtle rust resistant individuals from affected species that are still able to fruit and seed, so that we can assist to produce new generations of Myrtle rust resistant plants. It’s a big job and very much undertaken at a grassroots level, with very little planning or support on a national level. time for me to get of my soap box and back to work, selecting, growing and planting. this summer for the first time in 7 years we’ve collected seed from one of my favourite Myrtles - Silky Myrtle Decaspermum humile. they are very tasty for humans and fauna alike, and we need to get these food plants again available for our wildlife, as they are struggling to find a decent feed at the best of times.

Devil’s Claw Fig

S

IncE BarunG drEW attention to this nasty woody weed in 2015, also called Giant devil’s Fig and devil’s apple, it has continued to spread. Following the wet weather latish last year and the heat that followed, it flowered and set seed, as these plants do. Seedlings are now appearing in our gardens and other relatively open areas. When small, they do not have thorns near the base and are easy to pull out. the leaves are grey-green, not unlike wild tobacco, but developing lobes. once the plants are larger, and they can grow up to 2m in height, they have large coarsely lobed leaves, whitish flowers and lots of thorns. Spines measuring 4-10mm are present on the under-surface of the leaves, mainly along the midrib and lateral veins. It’s hard to miss, especially if you attempt to handle it. Wear thick gloves! hence, remove the seedlings wherever you find them.

It is not a fig but a member of the Solanum family, which includes wild tobacco, deadly nightshade, tomatoes, potatoes and Kangaroo apple. a native of central america, it is now naturalised along the east coast in higher rainfall areas from the nSW central coast to Queensland’s wet tropics and is usually seen growing along roads, in rainforest clearings, and now in gardens. Globular orange fruit 20-35mm in diameter contain many seeds, which are spread by various means, probably including birds, once the ripe fruit falls to the ground. unfortunately, the shrub also has a spreading root system from which young plants can appear some distance from the parent. It is really important to get rid of it before it fruits and before it becomes too large and hard to handle, literally.

If large plants are found, bag and bin any fruit. It is susceptible to herbicide but how it is applied will depend on the size of the plant. as it becomes more widespread, it will be increasingly difficult and costly to deal with. there are enough imported weeds here already!

hE VIoLEnt lightning-rich storms towards the end of February saw lots of trees down again this month across the range. the list of species that failed includes – Liquidambers, Wattles (acacia melanoxylon), Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosafolia), Poinciana (delonix regia), Brushbox (Lophostemon confertus), Lilly Pillies (Syzygium sp.), some big Eucalypts, and coral trees (Erythrina sp). ‘how can we avoid these calamities?’ I hear you ask. Well the answer is simple. have your trees checked, and if necessary, pruned, before the storms arrive. they come

every summer. It is not rocket science. I lost the top of a coral tree at home here, but I didn’t mind because I know someone with a woodchipper, a 4Wd tip-truck, and a team of willing workers, to clean it up. I pruned it every year or two to ensure that if it failed, it would fall away from the house, which it did. I love it when a plan comes together! I feel truly blessed to live amongst the tight-knit, supportive community of Maleny. It is a unique place, so it disturbs me to see more and more tree crews from out of town working around here. there are several local tree contractors, and we generally

hE Sound oF soul is the topic for discussion at Eckankar in March. Wendy rosenfeldt talks about the difference between stress and challenge, and Marisa Kliese launches a series in her columns of different chakras and the organ functions that compliment these, as well as their effects. then we have Mary and tim Bagshaw and using the slider for rehabilitation of Gluteus Medius tendinopathy and dr Edwin Kruys’s article on addiction. A pAinful topic:

addicted to painkillers

J

ESSIca LIVES WIth her husband and two kids in a typical suburban household. her codeine addiction began when a dentist prescribed opioids after pulling her wisdom teeth. Jessica continued with an over-the-counter combination of codeine and anti-inflammatory painkillers. She was unaware that she had become addicted. When she didn’t take codeine she felt down and couldn’t do anything. It was like she needed the medication to cope, to be able to manage the days. It helped her feel normal. But over time Jessica began to lose weight, and she became depressed. one day she developed a stomach ulcer and severe anaemia as a result of the medication. Jessica’s family convinced her to visit the family GP and she eventually received the treatment and support she needed. Jessica wants to share her story, which can be found on the website of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (racGP). People from all walks of life are dealing with an addiction to codeine and other opioids like oxycontin

Stress, Creativity and Intuition

W

E May BE familiar with the romantic idea of the suffering artist or the top executive Wendy Rosenfeldt that thrives on stress to achieve deadlines. however stress is counterproductive to success and shuts down the brains ability to function. While the memory of the experience of emotional or physical pain can be drawn on in order to convey a feeling in a film or painting, being under the influence of suffering does not enhance the creative process. When you are really depressed you may find it hard to get out of bed in the morning, likewise high levels of anxiety cause the mind to flit from one thing to the next without the ability to focus long enough to achieve anything. to compose a musical piece, write a screen play or creative a beautiful art work, the ability to focus on the detail while keeping sight of the bigger picture is essential. creativity demands an expanded state of awareness which is the opposite to a stressed brain. creativity comes from inspiration and goes hand in hand with intuition or inner knowingness. Intuition depends on our ability to notice subtle signals from the brain. Intuition is enhanced by contact with deeper mental levels. this is more likely to occur when we are quiet or take time out for ourselves. We take in a lot more information than we consciously process and therefore if we only have access to the conscious thinking level of the mind we are limited in the amount of possible information that we could have about people and circumstances in our life. you may get a gut feeling about something but when the mind is anxious or you are feeling scatty this intuition is often dismissed by the

more concrete observations of the intellect. People that are successful, whether it is in the business or art world, often attribute their great ideas to intuition and the ability to think outside of the box. this comes from coherent brain functioning and a state of inner calm. In situations of high stress, executives often overreact, blow up at people and make poor decisions. there is a difference between stress and challenge. In challenging situations, the brain stem floods the brain with the biochemical noradrenalin. this speeds up the brains processing and allows for finer perception and better ability to distinguish details. however when the challenge becomes overwhelming the brain shuts down and we go into fight or flight. the frontal areas of the brain which were working optimally during the challenge now get turned off and the awareness is dominated by fear. david Lynch, director of twin Peak and many films, is recognised as one of the most creative film directors. he attributes his creativity to his twice daily practise of transcendental Meditation. recognising the potential of tM to change lives, david has set up a foundation to sponsor teaching transcendental Meditation to at risk groups such as schools students, war vets, people in prsions and people with PtSd. Bob roth the director the david Lynch Foundation will be speaking in Brisbane on March 12th at 6.30pm at the Stamford hotel. If you would like to come book at www.eventbrite.com.au Bob roth Brisbane. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

There’s more to you than meets the eye

M

any oF uS don’t know what our liver or heart or any of our bits and pieces really look like and what an amazing array of functions take place behind our level of awareness. not understanding or knowing what these are, it then follows that we are unlikely to know how we can best support them. yet we are magnificently designed and if we make the right choices, not out of habit or programing then we feel wonderfully alive. there is an orchestra of cooperation, extraordinary chemistry and timing that is unfolding second by second within us. We need to become interested in looking after our bodies they are our best investments. We need to learn what healthy food really is, and to take the time to introduce healthy habits, so that we break the current trend of 1 out of 3 people suffering from cancer or other debilitating diseases. We might also loosely understand that our thoughts, emotions and life practices or lack of them have varying effects on how we feel, yet often we are too busy to really give ourselves any attention. We are also energy beings, having electromagnetic fields that respond to external influences as well as to our thoughts and feelings. the problem once again is because we have not been

taught to understand or experience these fields, when they have been thrown out of balance, we might not make the connection why it is we feel tired or disheartened or perhaps we don’t heal as well as we know we should. the chakras are energy centers within the body that correspond to the major nerve plexuses From these power points, energies are collected and relayed to various body organs and systems. the health and balance, of your chakras are essential to the health of the organs that rely on the energy that travels along the nerve pathways and influences the correct operation of specific organs. We live in an environment of man made fields of energy that have the capacity to disrupt the delicate balance of this flow and just as what we eat and how we treat our bodies has the capacity to disrupt the balance and function of physical body so too does our energy environment. Lateral Hip Pain isn’t always what it seems by dale Jacobsen

If you are concerned about any pain, consult a professional.

o

nE oF thE MoSt common reasons people see their physiotherapist is hip pain that extends down the leg. the pain increases when walking, climbing hills or stairs, and gets in the way of a decent night’s sleep. What was once (mis)diagnosed as bursitis is more likely to be tendinopathy – that is, damage or compression of the tendon; not inflammation. In place of stretching and massaging, modern treatment involves activation of deep hip muscles and targeted weight-bearing strengthening, which includes the use of the tWS slider. It is the invention of dr alison Grimaldi from the university of Queensland whose Phd focussed on conditions of the hip including Gluteus Medius tendinopathy. things not to do for hip pain: ● rest completely – it decreases the ability of the tendon to take load ● passive treatments – in the long term, the tendon needs to be able to take load ● injection therapies – unless you have not responded to an exercise-based program ● ignore pain – exercise within the boundaries of pain ● stretch tendon – this adds compressive loads damaging tendons ● massage tendon – if tendon is already irritated, massage can worsen the pain and ● take short cuts with rehabilitation – tendons needs to build strength and capacity again.
