Festivals, fundraisers and fish and chips!

W

HeReveR I Go, it feels like people are gearing up for the coming of spring. The frosty mornings and cold nights are on the wane, so enjoy those fires and hearty stews while you can! Putting us in the mood for an impending season change, August is full of festivals and creative events. The Horizon Festival brings ten days of everything in the arts, including many local events you will find peppered throughout HT. We have the Winter Theatre Festival and the Maleny Music Festival, The Bunker Spoken Word Series and the Maleny Youth Festival, to name but a few. So, we’re certainly not short on entertainment. I am yet again amazed by the stories I hear each month and the indefatigable nature of those we interview: Bob with his near-death experience in the Solomon Islands, Robyn with her knack for reinvention, Anne for her ability to create the best bookshop in Queensland, and John for his strength

of character in the face of great loss. our In Brief section is crammed full of organisations who are fundraising and doing good things in society, and would love you to join them. Montville Market constantly inspires with their Young entrepreneurs selling handmade and homemade goods to support our Great Barrier Reef, our environment and our ABC. For those who are feeling aches and pains or the weight of winter (mental or physical), our health pages bring physio tips and wellbeing suggestions, and the Range Community Gym in Mapleton has a Healthy Living Seminar coming to help motivate you into action. Saying that, it’s time for me to grab my trainers and get out there – spring is on its way and I need to be ready for it. Although I might visit Maleny Seafoods first for some fish and chips...

Hey Warrior

The Rapids

by Karen Young

by Sam Twyford-Moore

Anxiety is a tricky thing to understand, especially for our little people. Understanding why anxiety feels the way it does, and where the physical symptoms come from, is a powerful step in turning it around and helping children to feel empowered. The text in this book is factual and truthful which offers children the knowledge and power to help them take charge of their own wellbeing. Powerful in its message and delivery Hey Warrior offers this as its parting quote - “ Always remember, anxiety is a sign that you’re about to do something really brave.” A worthy reminder for us all.

Writing and mental illness make excellent bedfellows – for better and for worse. This courageous memoir reflects on mania and bipolar disorder in popular culture as well as Twyford-Moore’s own life experience. He looks into the work and lives of artists such as Carrie Fisher, Kanye West Delamore Schwartz, Spalding Gray and Paul Thomas Anderson to name but a few. Twyford-Moore also delves into the condition of bipolar disorder in our digital age, where someone’s manic episode can unfold in real time with millions of on lookers. Using different literary styles – everything from lists to streams-of consciousness to imitate the thought processes of a person’s brain in the throes of mania - The Rapids is clever and widely researched offering insights into a condition that effects thousands of people.

Beneath the Mother Tree by D.M Cameron Set on an island off the coast of Queensland, this debut novel by D. M Cameron blends Irish mythology and local Quandamooka traditions and history. Ayla has lived on the island her whole life, growing up with her grandfather’s tales from Ireland as well as the history of white settlement and Indigenous stories. Layered with fantasy and imagination, this book is brimming with nature in all its glory. Peppered with fantastic Australian characters you feel you’ve surely met before, the book unravels as both a chilling mystery and a contemporary love story. A dark yet magical exploration of the boundaries of love and our concept of belonging, Beneath the Mother Tree is a modern fairy tale written by a bold new voice on the Australian literary scene. MAKING NEWS

Winter

TheaTre FesTival For Maleny

M

ALeNY ARTS CoUNCIL has brought together a winter theatre festival for the cold months taking advantage of new, exciting plays from Australian theatre companies. President Professor Peter Lavery shared, “Reflecting the NAIDoC theme, ‘Because she did we can’, the first two plays concern the stories, both hilarious and poignant, of strong indigenous women; but the third is a piece of sheer tongue-in-cheek fun for those who love opera, as well as those who find the obligatory

death of the leading female character somewhat droll. “We are delighted also to announce that the second play, Rovers, has been included in the Horizon Festival coming to Maleny in August.” The Winter Theatre Festival opens at the Maleny Community Centre on August 18 at 7.15pm with Which Way Home, a play from Australia’s leading and longest running Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Theatre Company. There will be a Q&A session after the performance. Adding to their impressive list of inspiring and challenging plays, author/actor Katie Beckett (Redfern Now) who also plays the lead character, Tash, created Which Way Home from her own

story growing up with a single Aboriginal dad. The second play in the season, Rovers, is a twohander and will play in Maleny at the Community Centre on Sunday, August 26 at 2pm, after which patrons will be able to join the cast and crew in their traditional drinks, finger food and discussion. The third show, Death by Soprano, on September 16, 2pm at the Community Centre, is a complete contrast, embracing a loving irreverence for opera.

For tickets, visit: www.malenyartscouncil.com or the Maleny Information Centre. Non-members can secure season tickets for members price by arranging a block booking of six; they should phone John Marsden on 5495 2584.

Robyn and the Red couch As a local writer, Victoria McGuin keeps informed through contacts across the range, word-of-mouth, emails and social media. It was thanks to the latter that she came across Robyn Cook, her family, Lucy the cat and Stories from the Red Couch.

O

N A ReGULAR BASIS, via Facebook, I have been enjoying one-on-one interviews taking place on a red couch in Palmwoods. Not only are they focussed on local entrepreneurs, but they look professionally shot and well lit. Curious to know more about the team behind this enterprise, I contacted Robyn Cook who interviews all those who sit on this increasingly well-known two-seater. Soon, I was enjoying tea and conversation at the kitchen table with Robyn, her partner John and their youngest son, Matt. “Stories from the Red Couch has come about after many years of different ventures,” explains Robyn. “It’s a family

creation. John is a professional photographer and great with lighting and framing. Matt is learning about filmmaking and the technology that goes with it.” John and Matt are clearly relishing in their roles buying second-hand equipment on eBay to create their compact Tv studio. “Last year we were doing some live streaming at the Hinterland Harvest Market,” says Matt. “Then I saw this livestream gadget online, by Blackmagic Design, and thought it would be a great investment.” This gadget looks like a small black box to me. Matt laughs, “everyone looked at it and said, ‘What does it do?’” They soon found out. Set up with a camera, Matt filmed Robyn reading a book, “in a newsreader voice” with the help of the mini-recorder. This was followed by the first podcast, Clucking Chooks. “The sound was out, and initially there was a time lag,” says John, “but as we have gone along we’ve tweaked

things – the light, colour grade and sound synching and, we now use three cameras.” After two episodes of the podcast, Robyn came up with the idea of interviewing locals. “I was over 50, finished in a rewarding role with a mountain of experience but no formal qualifications. I had kids and in-laws next door to support. “I realised I was one of the ‘sandwiched’ generation and I still needed to work part-time. So, what to do? Start your own business. “I knew there were many women, and men, in my boat trying to reinvent themselves, so I decided to start interviewing them.” So far, the family have filmed 45 interviews and people are lining up to sit on that red couch. But perhaps, the most famous character in each episode is Lucy, the cat. This friendly feline settles herself in front of the camera without fail for every interview. “one time, we

had some tea and cake in front of us and she started on the cake… I couldn’t stop her until we’d filmed the segment!” Robyn and John’s guests find the whole thing amusing – many having known the couple for a long time since their move to Palmwoods 17 years ago. “I set up the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden project at Chevallum State School,” says Robyn. “It was the first one in the national program on the Sunshine Coast.” Robyn worked as Queensland Project officer for two years, then travelled the country for another two years training school principals. “overall, I trained 600 adults,” she shares. “It was exhausting but rewarding.” During this time John stayed home for the kids, “I was Captain Dad for a few years,” he smiles. Before their life in Palmwoods, the family lived at Cotton Tree Caravan Park where Robyn and John collaborated on a venture of a culinary kind. “I looked around for a camping cookbook for when you have a young family,” explains Robyn. “I could only find things about freeze-drying or cooking kangaroos over a fire! I really wanted something in the Women’s Weekly style and thought, ‘how hard could it be?’ “So I began to write my recipes, living in the environment I was writing about, and John took the photographs.”

“We had a guy In Mapleton put it together; we used local businesses wherever we could,” says John, “but there was no social media or online system for selling back then.” Robyn had a strategic approach for where to place her cookbook. “At a bookstore, 100 people walk in, and ten might be into cooking, one into camping – but at a camping store, 100% need to eat!” Robyn also rang the Today Show for three days in a row until the producer finally answered and she convinced them to interview her. “We were ahead of our time, appearing on the emerging shows promoting outdoorsy stuff.” Back to the present day. The family (except eldest son, Lewis) is involved with the old Ambulance Station in Nambour whose mission is to build a sustainable creative practice for those in the arts and media. “I joined the board last year,” shares Robyn. “Matt manages the budget and space for the Media Makers and the council gave us money to buy studio equipment. “We are helping others and Matt is developing a whole range of skills in live broadcasting and recording,” John says. “With this and Stories from the Red Couch, our mantra is to get better every week.” Robyn adds, “And from our red couch, I want to show people they can start again, create a business, run with a new idea, at any age.” With Robyn’s knack for reinventing herself, there is no one better suited to championing those who are doing the same.

NNe BRoWN is a name synonymous with Rosetta Books and the Maleny literary scene. As a regular HT contributor with her ‘Book Bites’ reviews, we knew we couldn’t let her leave without a proper editorial send-off. Anne grew up in Blackall in Central Western Queensland where her parents had a cattle and sheep property. Reading became an obsession from a young age with no television as a distraction. Anne and her four siblings had a wonderful childhood before heading off to boarding school from grade seven. once her schooling finished in the mid-1970s, Anne made the big trip over to London to explore europe and there she found her travelling feet. “I hitchhiked around europe for a few years back when it was done by everyone. I enjoyed picking chestnuts in the south-west of France, spent months lazing around Greek Islands, worked in London and generally did what one did in the ‘70s.”

Anne returned to Brisbane and worked a variety of retail jobs throughout the late 1970s and ‘80s before marrying and having two sons. Raising her young family, Anne took an interest in natural health and studied a naturopathy course while juggling work and family life. Life changed course with school-aged children and a divorce and so Anne moved into retail roles at Dymocks Books and Angus and Robertson stores. “I learned the ropes at this time on what was involved in running a bookstore and hadn’t dreamed that one day I would be doing it myself.” Advancing her skills in operations and book buying activities paid off for her future, but that was not on the horizon just yet. Anne met her partner, Geoff, and bought a farm in Conondale as a weekender. “Geoff moved onto the farm and I moved there once the boys had finished their schooling in Brisbane.”

Anne started out as a casual bookseller at Rosetta Books in 2009, “I felt at home in Maleny and enjoyed meeting the locals and being part of the community.” She took up the opportunity to buy the Rosetta Books store that year. “In the early days the bookstore was in the small space next to Monica’s Café, and then I moved us in 2011 to the bigger space in our current location.” The 2011 move didn’t come without its fears. “I was concerned about it being a big space to fill and a huge outlay…” However, the move paid off and the store became frequented by more and more locals and tourists. “What we found was that the tourists were drawn to the store and the local community felt a sense of ownership of it right along with us. I just love this community and the support it offers.” A new layout was designed and the space took shape. “We developed the new store with the community and families in mind. We are all very proud of the children’s area with its comfortable reading nooks and cosy feel.” The famous large copper coffee machine used in the café came from an online purchase from Norfolk Island. It sat boxed for two years before the opening of the cafe section in 2013. “The large leather lounge suite became a real focus point of the shop but unfortunately it had to go through lack of room and people falling asleep on it. Some people have not forgiven me yet for removing the lounge!” All the furnishings and design layouts make the store comfortable, but Anne says it is the staff that make Rosetta Books a shining success. “I have had staff throughout my whole time at Rosetta Books who have had my back and a lot of fun in our everyday work. They make the store what it is with their knowledgeable, friendly and professional manner. “I can say from my heart – I would not have wanted a business anywhere else. This community is incredible. People make the choice to choose us. We survived Amazon, Kindle and Booktopia and are still going strong due to community support.” I ask Anne what she will be doing in her days now that she is no longer treading the boards of Rosetta Books. “I’m in my sixties and I am ready for a slower pace in to semi-retirement. I want to do a lot more reading by the fireplace and reading for pleasure rather than recommended sale lists.” Rosetta Books will continue as the lovely local bookstore

that we have come to know and love. The new owner, Jan Cornfoot, has taken over the reins with the sale completed on July 4. The regular book reviews in the popular ‘Book Bites’ section and support for local authors will continue. “The only thing that will be missing will be me and my dulcet tones! Don’t worry, you will see me around town drinking coffee and looking well-read and well rested.” Where will Anne’s travelling feet take her next? “I’d like to get back to Morocco where I visited last year and I will just see where my next adventures take me. Maleny and its community will always be in my heart wherever I go. “I started in Blackall and have ended up in the Blackall Ranges where I have found my tribe. Thank you for making me so welcome here.”

oBeRT (BoB) ALLeN loves cricket. The demise of the sport in Montville is clearly a disappointment to him. “There used to be regular cricket matches on the village green, it was an oval, but when they moved the road, it cut our ground too much in size. “A lady called Mrs Glover had ten acres where the Montville Sportsground is now. She donated it to the village Association but I’m not sure what happened with it in the long run. We set up the cricket there until someone said the area was substandard and we were turfed out to make way for a soccer field. “Before we left, we held the last cricket match in Montville in 1989. It was ‘Montville’ versus ‘The Rest’.” Robert shows me the list of names, many long-standing locals who shaped the town. For some reason, Robert’s name is on the list for ‘The Rest’. “I’m not sure why that happened,” he says, “And look at my score – shocking! I was usually a good player.” Robert and Joan Allen have been part of the Montville fabric for many years, buying land, renovating properties long before the ‘flipping’ craze, and even shaping the landscape. “It was the early ‘90s and myself and a few others became aware that Montville needed more than a shopping village to entice visitors. A walk from Lake Baroon to Kondalilla Falls seemed a good start.” The Montville village Association accepted the idea and a group with skill sets to help, started planning.

Supplied by Bob Allen

After financial contributions and much red tape, Bob, Bryan McLennan, John Taylor and John Watkins were able to plot a course. “We had to do a lot of faffing around, and Judy Pippin, a Montville local, managed to get hold of a group of ‘work for the dole’ people to help. “I had a team of boys working on the track. It was quite funny as they thought it would be a breeze but I certainly kept them going. one fella said, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’.” Bob recalls the track had to be wheelchair accessible, “over creeks and gullies…we did it all, got it working, and then Council came out and said, ‘oh, you can have steps now’!” The Great Walk is a testament to the tenacity, vision and perseverance of many people, but there is no doubt Bob was one for the driving forces. We look through a memory album Bob’s daughter recently collated for him, and see photos of a busy life, much of it involved in sport, land, and renovation. “It began a long time ago. I’d been on a dairy farm with a partner, milking cows, and I didn’t enjoy it. “The farm had a brilliant house on it, set high on a hill and I thought I could make something of it. I built a huge fireplace, sanded the floors, improved everything possible. When we decided to sell, a fella who came to look at the farm ended up buying it because his wife loved the house!” Bob worked in real estate for three years before buying

the farm so he regularly attended auctions and began to buy and sell property. Bob and Joan met and married in Mornington but eventually moved the warmth of Noosa. “I couldn’t believe you could swim in winter!” However, they soon felt it was a place to holiday but not to live and moved to Montville. “It used to be just Misty’s, the post office and a service station where the newsagent is now. We were living in Balmoral with views from Caloundra to Double Island Point, but it was too windy for me! We sold up and bought in town opposite the hotel where there was a big gallery. “Joan used her four-year diploma of needlecraft skills and opened a shirt shop in the space. She designed and cut, and found brilliant sewers to make up.” Joan’s shirts sold all over Queensland and interstate for 13 years - it was, by all accounts, a very successful business. The couple also built the landmark Montville Chalet on the main street in the late ‘80s before finding three acres in Western Avenue with a house on it. “Council had extended the village precinct and we were able to split it into four sections. My son built our house which is just right for the two of us.” After Montville was a joint winner of the Tidy Town award in 1993, Bob and Joan became Tidy Town judges for two years. “They paid us to travel around, visit towns and have

morning tea. They even flew us to Thursday Island. It was fun for a while but the driving got too much.” As I climb into my car, Bob casually shares a memory from their property buying days. “We were looking at buying on the Solomon Islands. Joan and I were on a little canoe with our guide, William, when a storm came in. The rain was horizontal and we had no idea where we were. “Joan looked at me and said, ‘William’s stopped rowing!’ I looked up and William was slumped, accepting inevitable death. I thought, what would our kids do? So I told him to keep rowing and made the decision to head into the storm. “After what seemed an eternity we saw a light – there were people out looking for us. one of the local women gave Joan a massive hug when we climbed out of the canoe. We decided not to buy after that!” Bob and Joan survived, much to the relief of their children: daughter Debi, a farmer and breeder of Connemara ponies, and two sons, Scott and Ross, who are both builders. I drove away, thinking I had only just scratched the surface. The dedication from Bob’s children in his memory book says it all: he has lived a lot, read a lot, dreamed a lot, and fitted a whole lot in between. With a wonderful woman by his side.

a decade of gumboots and garden gates It has been ten years since John Jeffery took over the helm of Maleny Town and Country Supplies, a small rural store previously owned by Dairy Farmers and catering for the Maleny District dairy industry. John grew up in victoria in the 1950s and ‘60s, where he developed a love for family, football and a taste for adventures. “I met my wife, Paula, in victoria and we enjoyed many adventures in faraway places, from outback cattle stations to tropical resorts over our forty-five years together.” The couple raised a family of two sons in both Papua New Guinea and Australia through John’s banking and hospitality careers. In that time John enjoyed a long association with Maleny, having been a regular visitor to friends as far back as thirty years ago. “Maleny was one of the places we liked to visit in our travels and I accepted the manager position of the rural supply store in 2007, when it was still fairly small.” John went on to purchase the business in 2009 and he and the team have worked hard over the past ten years to continuously adapt and expand to match the community’s needs.

Town and Country Brendan and John welcome customers with a smile Image Angela Reedman-Polinski

“our vision was to develop the business to where it is today, a highly sought after store that meets the needs of a wide range of customers. We wanted to make it friendly and comfortable to everyone.” “To stay in business, we had to diversify and that we did. It meant that our rural supply to over 300 dairy farms has changed dramatically, so much so that there are now only about a dozen dairy farms in the immediate area.“ Tragically, in the early stage of ownership of the business, Paula fought Motor Neurone Disease through to January 2016 where sadly she lost the battle. John lovingly shares the stories in his book Paula & Me, in an uplifting, positive and honoured style celebrating their amazing life together. “I felt like my heart was torn from me when I lost Paula, but I was humbled by the support from my family and friends. My store manager, Brendan Hicks, took the helm of the store and handled all day to day operations for me. This gave me precious relief and time to support Paula and eventually return to my role.” After a few years away, John returned to his daily life at the store and being amongst the familiar faces. Like the customers, he enjoyed being back amongst the smell of hay in his nostrils and the community that keeps the local store active. John is most proud of the friendships, loyalty and supportive

efforts of all his staff team. The owner and manager relationship is working well and staying strong as this dedicated team continue facing the everyday business challenges. “The store is in good hands. Brendan and the staff still operate it today like it’s their own, I owe them big time for their support over the years and I appreciate them so much for being there for me.” The focus now is on growing the business and diversifying, whilst still providing continued personal customer service. “We know the time spent with our customers is an important value of the business and I like that we get to know them personally.” I ask John what he has loved the most about being the owner of Maleny Town and Country Supplies for the past ten years. “I take great delight in showing new customers the full range of products available, so they can see first-hand what we have to offer. We get plenty of laughs, we even have customers that bring their dogs in while they are shopping.” “I also like that owning the store provides me with plenty of opportunities to support our local community. We provide our goods and services to the Maleny Show Society, the Maleny Garden Club and we are there to support our local tradies too.” This one-stop shop really has it all. You can drop in and say hello to John and Brendan, pick up some new work boots, and maybe even leave with a jar of fresh local honey and seasonal fruit! John is a firm believer in bolstering the local community. “I know how we can support each other by buying and shopping locally. If we have it here, we can produce, purchase and provide locally to support the community.”

DYING WITHOUT A WILL WHAT HAPPENS? In the last two issues of Hinterland Times I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”. Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries. One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death. The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples: •

If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;

If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child

If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.

In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you. Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.

Dinner brings delight K

ATRINA AND ALex Freeman tell us, “At the Lions Welcome Dinner we found many kindred spirits. We found families, couples and singles who, like us, felt they bought in paradise. “Brindabella, our small farm purchased through Ray White Maleny, was named after our children, Bryan, Belinda and Bella BR INDA BeLLA. Katrina says, “Maleny district appealed to us because we originally came from rural NSW and needed to feel our home was in a rural environment. “We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere as we integrated into the community loving the hinterland feeling, the abundance of opportunities for leisure and the environmental beauty. “We purchased a Queenslander homestead overlooking Lake Baroon. The pleasure and joy it brings to my life is immense. The hours spent in the garden are magical...watching and listening to the bird life and the peace of the valleys”. Katrina goes on to say, “At the Welcome Dinner I sat at a Ray White Maleny table and the first question I was asked by the people on this table was ‘which home did you purchase?’ “I pointed to the picture of my home and the lady next door said, ‘You’re my neighbour, we purchased the block next to you’. “This was an instant connection and a friendship between families has blossomed, we’ve vowed to spend our future years being great friends, neighbours and support through difficult times we all face.” Hosted by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions, the 13th annual Welcome Dinner is on Wednesday, September 19 at the Maleny Showground Pavilion. Catered for by The orangery and supported by major sponsors Maleny IGA and Sunshine Coast Council. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased from Maleny optical and Maleny Realty. Palmwoods Community Kindy Fair

He MALeNY PLAYeRS are bringing Reginald Rose’s classic play ‘Twelve Angry Men’(adapted by Sherman Sergel) to the stage. This intense drama takes place in a hot, stuffy jury room. Twelve strangers are locked up together to decide on the guilt or innocence of a young man on trial for murder. It soon becomes clear that they are a very mixed bunch with different backgrounds and personalities. The play is unusual in that almost all characters are on stage throughout. The tension rises as tempers fray and opinions swing back and forth. Director Barry Harber commented that the play is not static. As in the film, the actors move about the room and converse in different configurations rather than just sitting at a table. Performances will be in the intimacy of the Maleny Playhouse on Friday, August 10 at 7pm, Saturday, 11 at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday, 12 at 2pm. Tickets: $20 at Imelda’s on Maple Street, Maleny or www.malenyplayers.com/bookings

The

Principal Questions

Mapleton State School Principal, Julianne Emmert, in the welcoming grounds of the school with some of her students

Our Hinterland schools are pretty special, and some of them have relatively new principals to steer them forward. We thought it would be interesting to talk to the person at the helm and this month it’s Principal Julianne Emmert from Mapleton State School.

1. How are your family with the move to this area? My family is very happy with the move and enjoy visiting as much as possible. I feel extremely fortunate to be here. It is such a beautiful area with so much to see and do. The surroundings are serene and peaceful. 2. What do you do on your days off? I love to renovate and often grab the Makita tools. I enjoy patchwork sewing, working in the garden or just pottering around at home. I also enjoy exploring the Hinterland and Sunny Coast, and love to go for a stroll along the beach and have a coffee with friends and family. 3. Is this your first Principal role? I have been a principal since 2006, working in a variety of different schools and settings within the Central Queensland region. I have learned various skills and thoroughly enjoyed the journey and experiences along the way. 4. Why did you choose to become an educator? It was my dream ever since I was in Year 2 to be a teacher. There was never any question which career path I was going to follow as I enjoy working within the whole school community with staff, parents and students. I love my job. 5. What are the strengths of the school community? At Mapleton we have very strong links within the local and wider community and a very supportive parent body

which is wonderful. We have experienced, skilled staff who are very dedicated hard workers and always give 110%. The students are very caring, considerate and polite to one another and respectful to staff and parents. 6.

What are your plans for the next year for the school? Wellbeing will continue to be a focus for staff, parents and students. If children are feeling happy and safe they are more equipped to focus on their learning. We also have some creative and exciting ideas on how we can improve our various gardens with the students, staff and parents, and build our environmental education program. 7. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Building a positive, supportive environment which enhances learning and strengthens relationships within the school community. I think it is important to acknowledge others’ efforts and accomplishments. 8.

What has been the most valuable lesson you have learnt along the way? Be flexible and always listen to others.

9.

Did a teacher or principal inspire you when you were a student? Yes, Mrs Broome, my Year 2 teacher. She inspired me from a very young age. 10. What is your motto or favourite quote? every Child Matters every Day. For previous Principal Questions, visit www.Hinterland Times.com.au

ALMWOODS WARRIORS FOOTBALL CLUB (soccer) has 40 years of proud football history in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. They also have a proud history of producing State level players and this year is no exception.

After the recent QLD Churches Soccer Association State Titles held at Redbank Plains, five Palmwoods players have been chosen for QLD teams. These include Courtney Davey (women’s), Daniel Powell (U/18 boys), Erin Powell (U/16 girls), Tristan Bailey (U/14 boys) and Luke Smith (U/14 boys). This is quite an amazing achievement for such a small club. “We are incredibly proud of our state players,” said President Jon Walton. “They have worked hard at club and representative level. They are a real asset to the club and should be extremely proud of their achievements.” All five players are busily fundraising to get themselves to the National Titles that are being held in Redcliffe during the September/October school holidays. Each player needs to raise about $1600. They have been spraying player’s hair green and gold, making cupcakes and washing cars, and would appreciate any offers of help or sponsorship from the local community or businesses. Please contact their club via the Facebook page, Palmwoods Warriors FC, if you’d like to help out. Their next home games on August 4 and 11 will be a great opportunity to get your car washed or buy a cupcake or snag to help them on their way.

ANIS MARTIN was born and raised in Maleny. Now 24 years old, she began work experience as a student at Maleny Jewellers in 2009.

“From there Jim and Sandra Goulton offered for me to stay on as a school-based trainee in retail,” Janis explains. “After school, I became a full-time employee and then store manager for Maleny Jewellers and after that, Beerwah Jewellers.”

This is no surprise for those who frequent Maleny Jewellers where Janis’s warm smile and friendly service make customers return time and again. I have had rings re-sized, watches repaired and bracelets fixed – and, I’ve been sorely tempted by a few items inside those glass cabinets!

The jewellery business is clearly something that appeals to Janis. “I have been lucky enough to have had numerous learning opportunities, including completing my diamond training in Sydney in 2017.” Admitting she was ready to learn something new, and always having had an interest in the manufacturing side, Janis signed up as an apprentice under Jim in March for a four-year apprenticeship. 'I am really enjoying working on the bench and have a new appreciation for the amount of work that goes into the smallest things,” Janis admits. Maleny Jewellers is located at Shop 4 Riverside Centre, 2 Maple Street, Maleny

Restoring a legacy

Small House Project

UNSHINe CoAST Council has begun a $250,000 Cultural Heritage Levy funded project to restore the state heritage-listed shed at Bankfoot House that was built by William Burgess in 1935. The condition of the shed had deteriorated significantly in recent times due to building materials used, timber decay, termite infestation and ground water damage. After months of planning, a 3D photogrammetry study and archaeological investigation, the restoration will involve the careful replacement of building fabric that is beyond repair, repair and re-use of fabric that can be saved, and the sensitive incorporation of new material. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the shed restoration was an important part of Council’s ongoing work to protect and promote our region’s heritage and is, “an important legacy for current and future generations as it helps to ensure the story of this site is retained”. Restoration work is due to be complete in time for the Bankfoot House sesquicentenary celebration event on october 14, 2018. The above image, courtesy of Picture Sunshine Coast, shows Bankfoot House circa 1895.

HASM is a local community group tackling housing affordability in the Hinterland in partnership with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC), working on several projects together. CHASM organisers are ramping up fundraising efforts to build the first of ten relocatable dwellings known as The Small House Project. The Pilot project will be located in the Maple Street Co-op’s community garden in Bicentenary Lane, Maleny. The group aims to reach $50,000 with the help of the community, and CHASM’s first raffle is underway with a $100 hamper from Maple Street Co-op, to be drawn at the end of August. BRIEF

Good cause, great prizes!

Can you help?

Shed the Light

Montville State School is a small school with 87 students in four multi-age classes who are extremely proud of their school and love being a part of the Montville community. The school has an active P&C who have been focussing on making the learning areas climate-controlled. They hope to raise $5000 to air-condition their library. Secrets on the Lake is helping by holding a raffle with fabulous prizes - tickets are only $2. Please support the school and buy a ticket or two - call 5478 5888 for information. The raffle will be drawn on August 31.

Congratulations to Pia Buick Real estate who successfully obtained a Realestate.com.au Advantage Community Grant 2018 on behalf of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, amidst an overwhelming amount of quality submissions. The grant provides $1,500 to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to assist them in supporting our community. MNC supports local vulnerable families and individuals. It has had a significant drop in donations this year making it difficult to meet our obligations to deliver programs and support to our local community. For more information contact Nooreen, Centre Coordinator on 5499 9345.

Shed the Light began in Kenilworth raising funds through their op shop for a children’s home in Nepal supporting 21 children. Since then it has grown to 52 children and after much negotiation has a lease on land for 25 years and have started building a forever home for the children. Staffed by a great group of volunteers, their Maleny store sells clothing and goods from Nepal. Shed the Light would welcome more volunteers and members. Their AGM is coming up next month and anyone who is a member (membership is $15) can come on the committee and help with this rewarding pursuit, just call 5499 9003.

Rally round Many Sunshine Coast Communities are feeling the identity, heart and soul of the entire Sunshine Coast is being destroyed in the name of growth. People are writing to us from Palmwoods and surrounds, frustrated by what they believe to be inappropriate re-zoning, density and height increases, loss of wildlife, corridors and habitats, increased road congestion, and building on Flood Plains. The Friends of Yaroomba Inc are asking those in the hinterland who have concerns to join their peaceful rally at Tickle Park, Coolum at 9.30am on Saturday August 11. Kaye Leach k

AYe LeACH’S love of the arts began many years ago in Darwin where she gained her Associate Diploma in Ceramics and for many years produced and sold pottery at Mindil Beach Markets.

ART WORKSHOPS - MALENY

Kaye Leach creates exquisite pottery

Involved with various artist cooperatives as well as exhibiting in local galleries, Kaye went on to study Interior Design and then began painting, looking at figurative elements with movement and flow. Since moving to Maleny, Kaye rediscovered her love of clay and her eye is continually drawn to the colours and shapes of nature. Flowers, with their infinite shapes and intricate structure fascinate Kaye. She loves the process of experimenting with clay to express her understanding of this wonderful aspect of nature.

Art has never been made while thinking of art ... art is made by doing art! Have you been wanting to try your hand at something creative but not sure what to do or where to start? Join local Maleny artist Kim Herringe in small group printmaking art workshops. From beginners to advanced, 1 and 2 day workshops run year-round in Maleny.

Call or visit the website for more information ...

Kaye creates a range of pieces from individual flowers to Wall Art and tabletop vessels. Some are instinctive while others are painstakingly sculpted where each flower is made by hand, so that none are identical. Kaye is continually experimenting with the 3D sculptural norms by pushing the boundaries of flowers to float and grow off the surfaces they inhabit. Kaye’s studio is based at 363 North Maleny Road, and is part of the Gallery Trail.

Strauss in da Haus A 50-year-old woman, separated from her husband, has lost her job and finds out that she is going to be a grandmother. She is slowly being pushed to the outskirts of society then accidentally runs into the great love of her youth. This is a witty, poignant, feel-good film, with an endearing heroine. ABC Radio National’s Jason di Rosso described it as, “A gem. Authentic, delicate and astonishing.” This French film has received a slew of four-star reviews, so don’t miss it! ‘Strauss in da Haus’ invites you to attend an intimate viennese concert experience reminiscent of Austrian palace charm. Prepare for luxurious melodies from the old-world capital of classical music including the lilting waltzes of Strauss and Shostakovich, the sparkling highs of viennese operetta and art song by Lehár and Schubert and the exciting dance music of Brahms, Monti and Bernstein. This unique show is coming to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with an afternoon concert at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, August 12 (3-5pm). Admission is $25, tickets at the door, or booking by phone on 3166 9067.

Johanna De Maine has been a Landsborough resident for over three decades but has a truly international reputation for her porcelain artworks. Johanna was invited to hold a workshop in Arita, Japan and through this, met Master Potter, Tatsuya Tsutsui. This meeting of two quite different worlds, but with one ceramic focus, has led to a partnership which has naturally influenced Johanna’s art. ‘Fragments of the Sublime’ is an exhibition at Art on Cairncross from August 4-26, which clearly shows her wonderful progression. There are interpretations of cherry blossom and maple trees, but all in Johanna’s unique style. More details can be found at artoncairncross.com.au

Bags of beauty Joanna o’Brien (pictured), the face behind Juwel, was born and bred in england. After training at The London College of Fashion and working in the industry, Joanna decided to travel and finally ended up settling in Australia where she now resides in Queensland. With a passion for colour and a curiosity to see how different patterns and shades work together she began to combine unique fabrics to create limited edition handbags. With the more recent addition of fine leathers her range is one of quality pieces that bring you a little bit of luxury with distinct style. Joanna’s beautiful work can be found at Peace of Green Gallery in Maleny.

Richo and the Home Grown Killers Richo and the Home Grown Killers (photographed here by Jody Gilchrist) formed a year ago off the back of Richo's first EP release Troubled Man. The band consists of all local musicians (hence the name Home Grown): Max Sportelli (drums), E'Rod Kelly (bass) and Big Willy Styles (guitar). They have an organic rock/dark country sound, think Johnny Cash mixed with some Chris Isaac and some ‘90s grunge and you might be close! They're a high energy toe tapping original's outfit that very obviously look like they love what they do. See them perform with a guest artist on September 1 at 7pm, Finbars.

Music on a Sunday

Historic Gheerulla Hall, 2184 eumundi-Kenilworth Road, is the venue for live music featuring Robyn Brown and friends on Sunday, August 19. Smooth and soulful, this unassuming artist has blown audiences away with her warmth, style, creativity, and sense of fun. Her performances bring a blend of jazz, blues, latin, gospel and original material. The afternoon will include a mix of smooth swing, bossa (Brazilian) and blues, working with many different amazing musicians. Starts at 2pm, and tickets are $20, www.trybooking.com/xBCN, with bar and refreshments available.

Please note Steve Miller returns to Finbars with his live and energetic acoustic show on Friday, 24 August. As a former front man for one of Tasmania’s leading rock outfits through the ‘80s and ‘90s, Steve loves to get the crowd involved. “You can be the best musician going around but if you are not interested in talking to and engaging the crowd, you may as well be a jukebox on stage. I love seeing people having a great time.” From his own original tunes to Tom Petty, CCR and Noiseworks, there is a genre that most people will get their teeth into! Come and check it out, you won’t be disappointed!

The image used for the NAIDOC information in Creative Cuts, July 2018, was 'Hunted, the Land Remembers' by artist Jane Nicol. This image was originally given to the Hinterland Times to promote an exhibition in Maleny during NAIDOC Week in 2016. Jane was not involved in the recent use of this image in HT, it was an artistic in-house decision, and HT was unaware that Jane is not an indigenous artist. Our apologies to those concerned.

Guarding your Stock

Y

oU CAN PLANT without Tree Guards but when it comes to planting in open areas they can be a valuable aid in protecting the time and money you have invested in your planting. Tree Guards protect your trees from several threats including Weeds (why can’t our trees grow as fast!), Weeding (oops did I just spray my tree too!), Frost (cold enough to freeze your leaves off!) and last but not least - Grazing animals (always up for a free feed!). There are a wide range of Tree Guards available on the market from Polyurethane Bags, Cardboard Guards and Coreflute Guards. We’ve been experimenting with many, over the years, but have settled on two types that we are very happy with. At the bottom end of the scale we use a 2 Ltr Juice/Milk Carton. These guards are quick to install, cheap and provide short term protection for fast growing trees. We use these with a bamboo stake and this combination can provide good visibility for your planted stock if the weeds get away over the summer and you have to brushcut or spray. They last about 6 months and are only 300mm high, so don’t provide much protection from grazing animals. For plants that we really want to look after and make sure they get off to a good start we use the Pink Tree Guards. These Guards cost more initially but can be re-used several times because of

Spring

T

He NIGHTS may be cold, but the glorious sunny weather certainly makes up for them. It could, however, be a long dry season so watch water use and take advantage of any soil moisture when planting. Mangoes know it’s the dry season as they’re starting to flower. Spring is definitely on its way with the lovely blue flowers of native Hovea, Hovea acutifolia, adorning every branch of these small to medium shrubs. They’re easy to propagate from seed and often self-sow in the garden. Wattles of course commenced flowering earlier and will continue as each species decides it’s time to display its gold or cream blossoms. August is wildflower season so take advantage of one of the guided walks organised by the Sunshine Coast Council during the Wildflower Festival. It’s a really good way to learn more about our local vegetation while enjoying a social outing.

HINTeRLAND TIMeS – AUGUST 2018

The cold nights and dry days do help to slow weed growth so it’s also a good time to do a final catch-up on maintenance tasks. Hopefully most landholders had a chance to control at least some glycine before it set seed. Glycine produces vast numbers of seeds with the dry pods opening explosively, scattering seed in all directions; the

sound is quite audible. Putting a generous layer of mulch on bare ground will retain moisture and help any rain to infiltrate. Bare soil can form a surface crust from which the rain just runs off. Fig birds have been busy feeding in several species of fruiting tree so make sure these are included in any planting program. Fig birds don’t limit themselves to figs and are heard and seen in Native olive, Olea paniculata, and Three-veined Laurel, Cryptocarya triplinervis. Both grow into large and attractive trees with a shady, spreading canopy. The spectacular gold and black Regent Bower Bird has also been around lately and is no doubt making use of connections to planted and regenerated forest. It’s a great time of year so make the most of it.

their rigid construction and provide many years of protection. These guards come in a range of sizes and you may see them on several revegetation projects around the range including Mary Cairncross, Maleny Precinct and the Woodford Folk Festival site. “Why Pink?” I hear you ask. visible light can be split into a spectrum of colours. Green leaves absorb light from the red fraction to drive photosynthesis. Research has demonstrated that the colour pink reflects and focuses the red fraction, concentrating this photosynthetic energy to enhance plant growth – well you did ask! I also like the Pink Colour of these guards for their high visibility. We often maintain some weed cover on our sites to provide soil protection and improvement. These guards stand out and provide great protection during weed maintenance runs. Tree Guards are great for protecting stock in the summer months when the ground really heats up and some plants can get cooked at the base. After a recent planting on our property, I thought I’d get away without guards in this patch but after a few weeks reprieve it quickly became apparent that guards were urgently needed to protect the plants from wallabies and hares, a timely reminder on the importance of guarding your stock!

FRANZ LOORS

IRE PITS have become a central part of our outdoor living, evolving from the days of caveman and campsites (out of necessity) to a myriad of modern designs to suit each individual application. There is something primeval, mesmerising and calming watching flames in motion. Most fire pits are fuelled by wood or charcoal with some designs operating on gas. Not only is it a place to gather and chat with a drink of choice but also a means of cooking, using skewers, grill baskets, cooking grate, cast iron skillet of rotisserie.

I

WoULD LIKe to use this article to thank all of my clients. For more than 20 years now I have been allowed to indulge my passion for pruning and shaping the treescapes of this beautiful plateau, and it is only because of the generosity of spirit and a shared love of trees and nature that all my clients have displayed, that have allowed me to do what I do. I find it amazing that me, a grown man, have been actually paid to climb trees and play with the latest cutting, climbing and rigging technology for a living. I have to pinch myself nearly every day that I go to work and find myself in yet another beautiful garden, working with yet another

beautiful tree. I have a very long relationship with some of my clients, and their trees, and also with particular properties, even though the owners have changed. Sometimes I don’t visit for eight or ten years, but that is all that is needed to keep their trees safe and stunning. I’m also so thankful to all the businesses in Maleny who support me and keep me rolling – the mower shops, mechanics, auto spares, and petrol station in particular.

So what... WELL, what was all that about? After nearly three months of unremitting angst, barely restrained hysteria and several shitloads of money, we are precisely back to where we started. every single one of those turfed from the House of Representatives over the dual citizenship imbroglio is now back in the parliament or in the case of David Feeney, replaced by a colleague from the same party. So no changes to the parliament, and most importantly no real effect on the government, either way. And as necessary corollaries, no early election and no leadership spills. Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten can forget their immediate concerns for the moment at least and go back to what they do best – abusing each other. In the Prime Minister’s case, this has become something of a vocation, if not an obsession: as the climax of the campaigns approached, his screams of liar, liar, pants on fire became progressively shriller and less coherent. And, it appears, less convincing. Which is why, despite all indications to the contrary, Super Saturday was not merely status quo Saturday, as the estimable Peter Hartcher rechristened it. Turnbull’s Kill Bill approach has now demonstrably failed, most crucially in his most vulnerable state, Queensland.

The catastrophic collapse of the LNP vote in Longman at the hands of both Labor and one Nation cannot and will not be ignored, and to attempt to fix it and the other five marginals in the Sunshine State will require not just a bit more tweaking of the message but a major revamp of just about everything. Turnbull’s campaign style emerges on three distinct levels. We have already mentioned the negative bit and its lack of traction: whether the voters actually believed that Bill Shorten lied about health policy (or anything else for that matter) a majority were clearly less concerned about the precise figures than the fact that they wanted more of it. Turnbull could inveigh until he was hoarse (and in fact did) about how his government had been wonderfully generous to the hospitals in the area, but the punters knew that the previous Abbott government had cut them and they weren’t prepared to forgive and forget just yet. And when Turnbull ranted on about Shorten’s connections with the unions, especially the dreaded CFMMeU, it was even more of a turn off; why didn’t he want to talk about their issues instead of his own? It all fed into the narrative of the Mr Harbourside Mansion, the exbanker multi millionaire who is hopelessly out of touch with the ordinary, hard-working Australians he governs. Then there is the hands-on Turnbull, the man in the fluoro vest or the hard hat or both who invades carefully selected small businesses and interrogates the

Finding your Perfect Class in the Hinterland There are so many wonderful classes running in the hinterland. But discovering the best classes, deciding if it’s the right class for you, and fitting it into your schedule can be overwhelming. Sometimes, you simply don’t have time to manage it all. That’s why we were excited to speak with local mother of two, Raeleen Kaesehagen, who founded mudputty: an online community that helps you easily find and book activities in your local area.

mudputty has hundreds of classes to choose from including music, dance, art, fitness, yoga, swimming and surfing lessons, as well as cooking classes, health workshop and finance classes. New activities are added regularly, so you’re bound to find something that suits.

class through word-of-mouth, and wonder why nobody else knew about it. As a busy mother of two, I wanted a central place to find all the activities in my local area.

What inspired you to create mudputty? I noticed that the best classes for my family and me were often the hardest to find. I’d spend hours searching for the perfect class, but often come up empty-handed. Later, I’d hear about an amazing

HINTeRLAND TIMeS – AUGUST 2018

And the long-running push for corporate tax cuts was always unpopular but has now become poison: Shorten’s Longman line about money for hospitals and not for banks has almost certainly despatched it for good. It will be a difficult backflip for Turnbull to negotiate and will be seen as a betrayal by some of his colleagues, including the indefatigable Matthias Corman. But it has now become a matter of survival. And finally, there’s Turnbull’s big picture campaign, the one he relied on to replace Abbott with such bravado, but which now, like everything has else, has become problematical. We don’t hear much these days about innovation and agility, it’s more about just keeping going, and hanging on for the very long haul. The now moribund company tax plan was part of the caution and incrementalism: it was to be legislated as soon as possible but would not take effect for many years, assuming it was not repealed in the meantime. The personal income tax plan is destined for the same delay and uncertainty. These big policies were enshrined under the slogan Jobs and Growth, which Turnbull boasts as his great success story; but really only half of it is true. There have been a lot of jobs created, although the boom is now stalled – in that sense there has indeed been some growth, within the jobs market. But the wider economy is still pretty flaccid: the Reserve Bank inflation measure is still a long way from becoming sufficiently positive to push up interest rates. And of course the biggest worry, as the bank has confirmed, is the continued stagnation of wages. Turnbull’s solution is classic trickle down – pass the corporate tax cuts and all will be well. If there was a hope that this was going to sway the masses last Saturday should have dispelled the illusion.

our leader was happy enough to agree that the byelections were at least partly a test of leadership; of course he meant Shorten’s rather than his own, and he has no intention of resigning after Saturday’s voters rejected him in four states, so the referendum between the two has been declared invalid.

How does mudputty help?

You can search classes by location, age, time, and category — so it’s easy to find the right class near you. You can book online, get reminders, view classes with your calendar, and message the class host. Everything is at your fingertips.

Quite apart from the fact that such occasions are clearly staged and inherently improbable, for most workers they miss the point: it’s all very well for the boss to be doing well, but how about a wage rise, of perhaps even moving from casual to permanent shifts?

Turnbull is hardly a natural retail politician, but if he is to reconnect with the voters who had such high hopes for him all those years ago, he would be wise to spend more time with the employers and less with their bosses – there are, after all, a lot more of the former than the latter.

What activities can the Hinterland Community find on mudputty?

mudputty is a huge time saver. It offers a central place to discover and book the classes you love most, while taking the stress out of managing logistics like payments and schedules.

complaisant owners about how much they love his government for showering them with largesse.

Where can people sign-up to mudputty? Go to mudputty.com to discover and book a great range of classes, activities and workshops on the Sunshine Coast. It’s free to join and easy to use.

But it cannot be denied that Turnbull and his chosen candidates are, at the very least, diminished. Big Trev has shrunk, Middle-sized Brett has dwindled and Little Countess Georgina has been reduced to the commonality. Shorten calls the result a signpost to a Labor win in a general election, which is a fair call, but it is only a signpost, not an irresistible surge. The point is that after all the sturm und drang, nothing much has actually changed, and in Turnbull’s case it has to, and quickly. Millions of words will be spent analysing the outcome, but for the moment, there is just one undeniable truth: Shorten won and Turnbull lost. That is the harsh reality the coalition will have to confront as it prepares for yet another poll – this one being the only one that counts. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

“If you only attend when you have pain or a large hole in your tooth, you will end up paying more for the complex treatment required to save it or worse, paying to have it extracted.

A dentist may also save your life, with many serious illnesses being detectable such as anaemia, jaundice, sepsis, thyroid issues, acid reflux and everyone’s nemesis, cancer. Staying Balanced in Winter

A

YURveDA IDeNTIFIeS winter as vata time of year. We see an increase in the light, dry, cold, changeable qualities of vata dosha. Wendy Rosenfeldt Skin and hair can become dry; circulation can become weak, resulting in stiff joints and cold hands and feet; and we can experience fluctuations in our energy levels, digestion and sleep cycle. excess vata can also increase insomnia, forgetfulness and changeability in the mind and emotions. The light, irregular, dryness of vata can make us crave heavy, sweet, unctuous food. We may gravitate towards pizza and hot chocolate. We may try and pacify our vata by hibernating under the doona or staying indoors next to the heater. While this may temporarily soothe the spaciness of vata, eating too much heavy food and not getting enough exercise can cause heaviness and lethargy in the mind and body making us feel unmotivated and even depressed. It is important to listen to our cravings for warmth, heavier foods and rest. These qualities do pacify vata however these desires can be fulfilled in a way that doesn’t create imbalance and leave us feeling down. Airy vata is balanced by having a regular routine with plenty of rest; staying warm and keeping your head and neck covered; favouring warm, nourishing, cooked food with predominantly sweet, sour and salty tastes; gentle exercise such as walking and yoga; and a massage with warm sesame oil. We naturally steer away from cold food, drinks and salads in winter, favouring soupy, unctuous dishes. Nature provides grounding, vata pacifying, root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, beetroots and carrots. Warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, cloves and turmeric help to warm the body and provide immunity against winter coughs

and colds. Adding oil to our diet, in the form of ghee and olive oil, helps to balance the drying effects of vata in the environment. As the weather cools down our bodies have to work harder to maintain temperature. We may notice that our appetite increases, as our bodies are crying out for more fuel for the fire. our digestive system is usually stronger in the cooler months allowing us to comfortably increase our intake of dairy products and nourishing grains. Rice, pasta, quinoa and couscous are all suitable for balancing vata. People in vata time of life, roughly 60 years and older, are more likely to get out of balance during vata season. vata related disorders such as anxiety, insomnia, weak digestion, poor elimination, forgetfulness, arthritis, brittle bones and poor circulation are generally more common in the elderly. However the more balanced you are moving into vata stage of life, the easier this transition will be. Don’t wait till you are 60 and experiencing these imbalances before taking care of your health. our fast-paced, information overloaded society is predisposed to vata imbalances. Travel, especially by plane, constant stimulation from phones and computers, rushing and not enough rest or time spent in nature aggravates the already light, changeable qualities of vata. Soothing vata with rest, routine, warmth, and oil (both externally and internally) can minimise the characteristics of out of balance vata. As you move into the later part of life, you can enjoy the positive attributes of vata such as enthusiasm, light heartedness, dry sense of humour and flexibility in mind and body. What is Our Best Medicine

W

e ARe eNeRGY BeINGS. We know this, we feel this. Science shows that each cell has an energy field, each finger, each toe is an inlet and outlet of energy flows that correspond to acupuncture meridians. even each tooth relates back to an organ or a meridian. We know that preceding most illnesses there is a shift in our thinking or our emotions, even if the shift is actually a switching off, a tuning out and functioning on autopilot, so that we are no longer distracted by what we feel or what our inner voice is telling us we need to thrive. Sometimes it’s just that our lives are so busy or so unstimulating that we lose our connection to nature and the fields that she is able to regenerate within us. We have such wonderful lives, we have so much to be grateful for, we live in a wonderful country, we have great freedom, yet many feel isolated and disconnected with the greater purpose and meaning of their existence. Sometimes our body will strongly bring our attention to our need for something more, some assistance beyond our routine, something to help put the spark back into our day. We try many things but often they are sourced from out there, wherever that is for each one of us.

And wonderful as those things, whatever they are may be as a temporary measure, they often don’t feed our soul, they just help us on a surface level. Look at a child’s face when it’s being hugged and given undistracted attention and you will see healing taking place, think about what makes you feel joy, what softens those places of tension in your body, the thoughts that balance out the scary responsibilities of life, or even just bring a little balance to the negative or disconnected internal dialogue that we absent mindlessly play into our subconscious without even noticing. I suggest that just as you consider popping a vitamin or changing your diet, be open to the benefits of a nurturing hands on healing session to bring you back to a part of yourself that your may have misplaced somewhere as you were growing up. The feedback that I get from patients who experience a healing session with me is wonderful as it brings them back to themselves and they see not just their body, but their lives begin to show wonderful improvement. Cloudy Eyes and Cataracts

Shoulder PAIN

One of the inevitable parts of aging is that things in our body wear out. When we talk about vision, that can have a serious impact on the quality of our lives. One of the most common age-related conditions is cataract. I’m sure you’ve heard of it! What is it? Many people who present to me describe it as a “growth over the eye”. Close, but not perfectly correct. Cataracts are actually a cloudiness occurring inside the lens of the eye. It has the effect of looking through a dirty or stainedglass window. There are degrees of cataract which means it can be worse for some than others. The main cause is simply age, but UV rays are also involved. Almost everyone over the age of 50 has cataract to some degree but it takes time for visual impairment, including increasing blur and glare making it more difficult to read, drive, watch television, etc. Cataracts can be easily detected, monitored and managed by optometrists until eventually surgery is required, a fairly simple procedure these days performed by an eye specialist.

o

Ne CoMMoNLY TReATeD condition by physiotherapists is shoulder pain. There are three main subdivisions into which shoulder disorders nearly always fall, including rotator cuff tears/impingement, instability (dislocations) and capsular problems (frozen shoulder). only a smaller number of these should require surgical management. Knowing more about rotator cuff tears can be useful. Ultrasound scans of the rotator cuff tendons often demonstrate partial and full thickness tears, even in people who do not experience pain in their arm! Degenerative rotator cuff tears are often a picture of ‘age-related wear and tear’ in the shoulder. Pain develops after an increase in load or trauma to the arm – e.g. repetitive overhead activities – window washing, hedging, falling onto an outstretched arm or falling onto the shoulder. Pain may be felt on/around the shoulder, down the outside of the upper arm and even further down the

arm. early diagnosis and treatment through physiotherapy will produce quicker improvements in the majority of patients. Physiotherapists are trained to assess the underlying causes of your injury or condition and provide effective treatment. Don’t put up with pain. Call Maleny Physiotherapy now on 5494 3911. Appointments are available with Tim, Mary and Andrew.

At Maleny Optical, we have the sophisticated equipment to check your eyes for cataract and make sure the quality of your life is not hampered by the onset and progression of cataract. We can make recommendations to slow down the progression by proper UV protection. So, for everyone over 50 or if you haven’t had an eye test for a while, do yourself a favour. Make an appointment today. Till then, Paul Brown
