EDITOR’S NOTE W

atch the water glide and dance as it fills the kettle. Press the button. As the water boils hear the thunderous roll and feel the warm steam as it rises. Making and drinking a cup of tea is one of life’s most simple and enjoyable pleasures. From around 4,700 years ago in China the beverage has been enjoyed in solitude, in ceremonies and at parties. With my tea steeping and your company, I can’t think of a better way to start a discussion on women’s health and being your best. Starting with tea, our first article is entitled the Virtues of Tea, which discusses the main varieties of tea and the wealth of health benefits each offers. Herbal and herbal formula teas offer even more flavourful varieties and can help with innumerable health conditions. Seek them out at your favourite health food store. Lack of adequate sleep (which is my current challenge with a seven-month-old baby), menopause, PMS, a life-change, fertility issues, over-work, an illness, a lack of exercise and good nutrition, and even aging can make a woman not feel her best. That’s why for this issue, I also invited naturopaths and other writers to share their expertise and health solutions with you. Are you at your best? You can be. Grab yourself a cup of tea and find a comfortable place to read and find out how. Yours in health and happiness,

A HEALTH INFUSION

The Virtues of

Excerpt from Tea: History, Terrors, Varieties Ever since Shen Nong discovered the stimulating and detoxifying properties of tea some 4,000 years ago, humans have been interested in its medicinal properties. It is these properties that first made it popular, at a time when it was considered a medicine. It was thought that its bitter taste stimulated wakefulness, good overall health and the acquisition of great wisdom. In Chinese medicine, during the Tang and Song dynasties, the medicinal effects of tea were recognized more and more. It was recommended to cure and prevent various ills, such as headaches, dark thoughts and bad digestion as well as to dissolve fats. A few centuries later, Li Shizhen (1518–1593), physician and author of Compendium of Materia Medica, claimed that tea could regulate the body’s internal temperature, calm anxiety, dissolve fats and improve concentration. Although the stimulating, diuretic and antibacterial properties of tea were recognized by Chinese medicine a very long time ago, it is only recently that modern science has confirmed these benefits. Because of its antioxidant effects, the health benefits of tea are arousing a lot of interest in the medical community, particularly in the areas of cancer prevention and the treatment of degenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Today, we no longer believe that tea is an elixir of immortality or has the mystical powers attributed to it by the Taoists of yore. However, it has virtues that contribute to longevity by stimulating heart function, strengthening the immune system and preventing cellular mutations. Of course, processing brings out new chemical elements in the leaves, which change their taste as well as their properties, and so each family of tea has its own specific qualities.

THE PROPERTIES OF WHITE TEA Refreshing and thirst quenching, in China, white tea is consumed mainly in the summer. According to Chinese medicine, it helps to counteract excessive heat and alleviates the symptoms of menopause.

THE PROPERTIES OF GREEN TEA According to recent studies, green tea appears to contain a higher number of polyphenols than other tea families, making it increasingly popular in the West over the last few years. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, green tea could prevent certain forms of cancer. Also said to enhance intellectual performance, green tea contains more iron, vitamins and catechins than black tea. The dehydration method used in the processing of green tea produces a higher polyphenol content in the leaves.

HDOct-NovOntario2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-09-21 4:33 PM Page 9

THE MAJOR PROPERTIES OF TEA • It supports the heart system. • It activates circulation. • It helps detoxification and the elimination of toxins. • It fights hypertension and reduces fatigue. • It slows the aging process. • It helps prevent certain types of cancer. • It helps digestion and reduces cholesterol. • It balances body temperature. • It strengthens the immune system. • It enhances concentration. THE PROPERTIES OF WULONG TEA Regular consumption of wulong tea (just over ¼ ounce/ 8 grams per day) is said to have a slimming effect by stimulating the metabolizing of lipids. Its relaxing, antistress, even euphoric effect is said to be due to the high concentration of aromatic oils, which are drawn out from the leaves during rolling.

THE PROPERTIES OF BLACK TEA The enzymatic oxidation undergone by the leaves during the processing of black tea converts some of the catechins into theaflavins and thearubigins and destroys some of the vitamins. On the other hand, the caffeine in black tea is released more rapidly into the bloodstream over a shorter period compared to green tea, as oxidation partially separates it from the tannins. This means that black tea is more effective as a physical stimulant than green tea.

THE PROPERTIES OF PU ER TEA Because of its specific properties, Pu er tea has long been used as a dietary supplement by many nomadic tribes and ethnic groups living in regions of Asia. As these people ate mostly very fatty yak meat, tea allowed them to balance their diet, counteracting the fat. Today the purging qualities of Pu er teas are recognized as helping specifically to regulate the body and stimulate digestion. Pu er also helps eliminate cholesterol from the body. Used with permission from Tea: History, Terrors, Varieties, by Kevin Gascoyne, François Marchand, Jasmine Desharnais and Hugo Americi, edited by Jonathan Racine, Firefly Books 2011, $24.95 paperback.

FOOD PASSIONS

BEEF IN WULONG TEA In our grandmothers’ time it was customary to deglaze a pan with tea, often a strong black tea, and so this is an affectionate nod to our ancestors and their traditional knowledge.

INGREDIENTS 2 (10-ounce/300 g) pieces of sirloin Salt and pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 6 to 7 tablespoons butter 1 cup (250 ml) water 2 tablespoons (30 ml) wulong tea (such as Shui Xian, Mi Lan Xiang or Qi Lan Xiang)

DIRECTIONS Season the pieces of beef with salt and pepper to taste. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat until it smokes. Add the olive oil and 4 tablespoons of butter. Place the pieces of beef in the skillet and cook until a crust forms, around 3 or 4 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness of the beef. Place the beef in a cold oven for 2 to 3 minutes, depending on the desired degree of doneness. Remove the beef from the skillet. Set aside. Wipe excess fat from the skillet. Melt 2 or 3 tablespoons (30 to 45 ml) of butter and cook until it turns hazelnut brown. Deglaze with water, scraping the bottom of the skillet to recover any browned bits of the meat. Reduce the liquid by half and add the wulong tea. Leave to infuse for 2 to 3 minutes, then pour through a fine strainer. Bring the mixture back to a boil and whisk. Slice the beef and serve with the wulong-flavored drippings. Serve the meat with a vegetable puree and seasonal onions. TOMATO COULIS WITH SENCHA INGREDIENTS 10 large ripe plum tomatoes Ice cubes 4 tablespoons (60 ml) olive oil 10 sprigs thyme 1 head garlic, separated into unpeeled cloves cut in half 1 cup (250 ml) water 8 teaspoons (40 ml) Sencha Haruno 1½ teaspoons (7 ml) sugar 1½ teaspoons (7 ml) salt

DIRECTIONS It is important to choose very ripe tomatoes, as they will be easier to peel. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and bring a large saucepan of water to a boil. Remove the tomato stems and, using a small paring knife, score the base of each tomato in the shape of a cross to facilitate peeling. Fill a large mixing bowl with ice and water. Plunge the tomatoes into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, pull them out then immediately plunge them into the bowl of ice water. Using a paring knife, peel the tomatoes starting at the scored base. They should peel very easily. Line a baking sheet with well-oiled parchment paper. Slice the tomatoes in half lengthwise and place them facedown on the lined baking sheet. Arrange the garlic cloves and the sprigs of thyme on top of the tomatoes. Salt and pepper to taste. Bake in the oven for 3½ hours, until the tomatoes are soft to the touch and slightly dry. Bring 1 cup water to a boil and infuse the tea for 3 minutes. Do not press the leaves during infusion because the liquid will become too bitter. Remove the leaves and set aside. Blend the still-hot tomatoes in a blender to obtain a smooth puree. With the blender still running, add the tea, sugar and a little salt and combine well. Strain the coulis through a fine strainer. Add pepper to taste. Serve hot or at room temperature with poultry, white meat or lobster. Natural Solutions For

Rejuvenating Sleep

By Janet McKenzie, BSN, MBA, ND Passion flower, valerian and hops are among the most widely used sedative botanicals. Their track record of efficacy is well known and long standing. But are these botanicals popular because they are the only options? As it turns out, the answer to that question is a resounding “No!” Here, then, is a short introduction to some other calming herbs with which you may not be familiar. The Chinese jujube or red date Ziziphus jujube, also known simply as jujube, is a staple in Asian medicine for soothing nerves and reducing stress. Current research suggests that its action may result from the modification of levels of the neurohormone serotonin, which is known to affect mood and sleep. Albizia kalkora – also known as silk tree or Albizia julibrissin, is a medium sized tree that is common in Asia. Although silk tree has a long history of use in traditional medicine, our understanding of how it works is limited. Research has shown that the seeds of silk tree contain a biologically active substance, albizziin, which is an analog of the amino acid glutamine. Glutamine has many physiological functions, including regulation of moods. While there is no direct evidence so far, it may be that albizziin exerts a calming effect by mimicking the action of glutamine in the brain. Biota orientalis - also known as Biota, is another plant that is used extensively in Asian medicine. It has many traditional uses and is known to be sedating. Biota appears to exert its effect by partially engaging a brain receptor for the neurohormone GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) . It has been reported that the actions of biota can be compared to some sedative/anxiolytic drugs. 12 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

You may have noticed a trend with respect to the actions of these herbs; they all act on brain receptors for neurotransmitters. Hops, passion flower and valerian do this too. Hops contains a constituent, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, which is believed to act on GABA receptors. Valerian extracts have several neurologically active constituents, including GABA; valerian has been shown to act on GABA receptors, and may also act on receptors for serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline . Finally, passion flower seems to exert its action on GABA receptors as well. When dealing with a condition like insomnia which can have many possible causes, it is important for treatment purposes to distinguish occasional insomnia from chronic. Each of the herbs above is traditionally used for the short-term treatment of occasional insomnia. The fact that some of them have different but complimentary methods of action means that they may act more effectively in combination then singly, and this would be a common approach used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, for example. There may be contraindications to taking any of these herbs, and one should consult a naturopathic doctor or licensed herbalist before taking them. Use them with caution until you know how they affect you, and do not use them at times when you need to be alert, especially when driving. Janet McKenzie is a graduate of the University of the British Columbia School of Nursing, Queen’s School of Business and the Canadian School of Naturopathic Medicine. She practices in Toronto, and has taught at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.

WOMEN’S HEALTH Finding Estrogen Balance for

Hormonal Harmony By Lorna Vanderhaeghe, MS

We are bombarded by environmental estrogens, also called xenoestrogens or estrogen mimickers. These man-made chemicals act exactly like estrogen in the body. Estrogen-mimickers are found in everything from plastics, cosmetics and pesticides to dry cleaning chemicals, dairy products and more. Too much estrogen upsets the body’s delicate balance of hormones. Some of the most common female estrogen-dominant conditions are PMS, endometriosis, abnormal PAP tests, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, cystic breasts, heavy periods, low thyroid, hormonal acne, severe menopausal symptoms, breast cancer and the list goes on. Too much estrogen can block the uptake of thyroid hormone, promoting low thyroid. Over 23 percent of Canadians take thyroid medication for low thyroid and an estimated 30 percent have undiagnosed low thyroid with symptoms that include hair loss, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, night sweats, recurring miscarriage, heavy periods, high cholesterol and so much more. Women need estrogen but not the toxic type found in the environment. Women are supplied with estrogen from their ovaries, adrenal glands and fat cells. When the ovaries take a much-needed rest at menopause, or if the ovaries are surgically removed during a hysterectomy, the adrenal glands become the main source of estrogen. The adrenal glands sit atop the kidneys and they also help us deal with stress and control water balance in the body. When our adrenal glands become exhausted from too much stress, hormone havoc ensues. Classic symptoms include insomnia where you fall asleep fine but wake up several hours later and can’t fall back to sleep, caffeine and salt cravings, no energy, difficulty handling stress and weight gain around the middle. The liver is the key organ for detoxifying excess hormones, breaks down and distributes estrogen and other hormones. Your liver decides if your estrogen is going to stay in the healthy form or be converted into cancer-causing estrogens. Our liver becomes sluggish due to a diet of too many bad fats (from lard, margarine and refined oils), sugars and artificial sweeteners, fried foods, and not enough vegetables and good protein. Regular alcohol consumption also negatively affects the liver’s ability to maintain hormone balance.

HORMONE HARMONY The liver, thyroid and the adrenal glands must operate at peak performance to ensure hormone harmony. The basis of a healthy hormone program is a diet full of cruciferous vegetables and lean protein from wild, free-range sources. There are also key herbs and nutrients researched to support the adrenals, liver and thyroid.

ADRENAL SUPPORT Eight hours of deep restful sleep will reverse adrenal exhaustion quickly. At bedtime, take a natural sleep aid containing melatonin, chamomile, hops, valerian and passionflower to help with sleep. The following herbs should be taken in combination to nourish the adrenals and help reduce the effects of stress:

HDOct-NovOntario2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-09-21 2:10 PM Page 15

Rhodiola increases the body’s resistance to all types of stress; enhances mental and physical performance; and regulates the heart by increasing oxygen utilization. Suma is called "para todo" which means "for everything.” It is considered a regenerative tonic for the nervous, reproductive and digestive systems and is used to treat hormonal disorders, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, and stress. Schizandra berry is a general tonic that promotes liver health and counters the effects of stress and fatigue. It is also used for insomnia associated with changing hormones. Ashwagandha increases energy to improve overall health and longevity. Studies have proven powerful antistress effects as well as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and immune-modulating properties. Ashwagandha not only supports the adrenals but has also been found to improve thyroid function too.

SUPPORT A LOW THYROID The adrenal glands and the thyroid are directly linked so once the adrenals become exhausted, the thyroid goes low. The following nutrients have been found to help support the thyroid. These nutrients can be safely taken along with thyroid medicines. Never stop your thyroid hormone drug without your doctor’s recommendation. Tyrosine is an amino acid necessary for the manufacture of thyroid hormones. Tyrosine assists a sluggish thyroid and can aid the loss of those unwanted pounds. Ashwagandha supports the thyroid gland. Studies show that it enhances thyroid function and produces a significant increase in T4 thyroid hormone. Guggal extract supports complete thyroid health while enhancing the conversion of T4 hormone to the more potent T3 hormone. Guggal extract and ashwagandha should be used together to support thyroid health. Potassium iodide is essential for the manufacture of thyroid hormones, and was initially added to salt to combat the epidemic of low thyroid in Canadians. Since many people now avoid salt for fear of high blood pressure, low thyroid and goitres are on the rise in Canada.

GLUTEN-FREE

The Smart Way By Kathy Smart It seems that going gluten free is the entire craze right now! I asked some of my clients and Facebook Fans why they went gluten free. The responses? Well amazing . . . here take a look.

ENVIRONMENTAL ESTROGEN PROTECTION We must avoid products containing environmental estrogens such as cosmetics containing parabens, plastics with BPA, synthetic hormones in dairy and meat, to name a few. Detoxification of these estrogens using saunas and dry brushing the skin will help to eliminate excess estrogens, as does eating organic broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. Supplementing with the following nutrients can help protect you from the dangerous effects of environmental estrogens and balance hormones. If you have any of the estrogen-dominant conditions mentioned earlier, you need the following food-based nutrients every day. They can be purchased separately or in combo. Indole-3-carbinol (I-3-C) is powerful plant nutrient from cruciferous vegetables. I-3-C prevents the conversion of good estrogens to cancer-causing estrogens. I-3-C maintains a healthy cervix, protects against HPV cervical lesions and controls abnormal cell growth found in those with uterine fibroids, breast lumps and endometriosis. It is very effective for heavy periods caused by a thickened uterine lining. D-glucarate is a powerful detoxifier of excess estrogens via the liver. It helps to maintain healthy hormone balance. Green tea extract contains polyphenols, catechins and flavonoids shown to be protective against estrogen-related cancers and it stops abnormal cell growth. Curcumin is the yellow pigment of turmeric. This powerful anti-inflammatory agent works to inhibit all steps of cancer formation: initiation, promotion and progression. Curcumin also supports the liver. Sulforaphane, has been shown to stimulate the body’s production of detoxification enzymes that eliminate environmental estrogens. Sulforaphane is a powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer age. Lorna Vanderhaeghe, MS, is Canada’s leading women’s natural health expert. She has authored over 10 books many of which are FREE at www.hormonehelp.com 16 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Lupus and Thyroid Disease Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis Extreme Fatigue and Low Iron Having a child with ASD and ADD Lyme disease. Terrible eczema and psoriasis Celiac disease Migraines Irritable Bowel Disease Stubborn Belly Fat Constant stomach aches and frequent runs to the bathroom Extreme bloating, hives, major gas, diarrhea and depression

The list went on and on . . . so going gluten free can help all of these issues and so much more but how do you go gluten free – the smart way?

1. STICK TO THE BASICS I tell my clients to eat as close to nature as possible. Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fresh meats, eggs and gluten-free whole grains like quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, brown rice and teff are all naturally gluten-free.

2. STAY AWAY FROM PACKAGED FOODS Many companies have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon and are simply switching out high glycemic, low nutrition white rice flour and white sugar ingredients and then slapping the glutenfree label on it. It may still be a processed food – gluten or not.

3. THINK TO YOURSELF Is this a food that is as close to nature as possible? Gluten-free foods can be healthy when you stick to food in its most natural state as possible. But what about bread and pasta? This is the question so many ask. And I say, what about it? You can make delicious low glycemic gluten-free bread out of bean flours, quinoa flours, brown rice flours and more. There are so many amazing gluten-free choices! The amount of gluten in wheat has sky rocketed. Our bodies weren’t designed to digest so much gluten. So removing it and replacing it with whole foods = health!  Kathy Smart is known as North America’s gluten free expert, is a TV show host, chef, nutritionist, cookbook author and a gluten free celebrity. When not cooking up gluten free goodness in her kitchen she can be seen on CTV, Rogers TV, CBC and traveling across Canada spreading the gluten free good news! Kathy will be appearing at the Gluten Free Expo, September 29th, 2012 showing her WORLD famous brownies. www.LiveThe SmartWay.com

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The New Superfoods By Renita-Alejandra Rietz It seems that everyday there is another hot new novel functional food that captures our attention and offers the fountain of youth or is the next panacea for all of our woes. It is often a question of weeding out the hype from the nutritional truth. There are a few new superfoods that stand out to be truly exceptional and will surely make their mark in the growing category of superfood nutrition.

SPROUTED CHIA POWDER, A NEW TWIST Most people have by now heard of chia. The Aztec running food has become a staple for many and rightly so. This humble little seed is one of the highest vegetarian sources of Omega-3. It is one of the most balanced superfoods providing protein, noteworthy vitamin and mineral profiles as well as both soluble and insoluble fibre and thereby can increase satiety, curb hunger cravings and balance out blood sugar levels when combined with a high glycemic meal. It is an indispensable staple superfood for those on any weight management program, for those with blood sugar issues or high cholesterol. What could be considered a new superfood however is sprouted chia” sold in a cold milled powder form. Yes, it is still chia, but it has undergone a very necessary transformation. Chia seeds are notoriously mucilaginous and so are quite difficult to germinate successfully. They require constant agitation and just the right amount of moisture and temperature to fully germinate into a living plant. It is this living plant form of chia known as ”sprouted chia” that is the true superfood for there has been an actual chemical shift in its nutritional makeup. Vitamins C and E go up by 900%, the antioxidant score doubles and vital enzymes are dramatically increased. It is also incredibly convenient to have a ready to go stable powder that you can add to everything you eat with double the nutrients of regular chia!

AUSTRIAN PUMPKIN SEEDS Also new on the horizon are Austrian pumpkin seeds, known as Styrian pumpkin seeds from the famous region of Styria, the southeast state in Austria known as Steiermark. They are thick, dark green and have a rich nutty flavour. These seeds come from the heirloom Styrian pumpkin, which was introduced to Europe over 9,000 years ago from Peru and Mexico. The seeds contain magnesium, iron, zinc, fibre, phytosterols, chlorophyll and carotenoids, such as lutein. These pumpkin seeds are unlike anything you have ever tried in North America and make an incredible superfood snack, seed butter, milk, trail mix and are great for smoothies.

LONGAN BERRIES Lastly, keep an eye out for dried longan berries. This succulent exotic fruit from Southeast Asia has been compared to the lychee fruit and has an exquisite flavour with notes of citrus, melon and mango. It is an excellent source of vitamin C and fibre. Longan has been used in Traditional Asian Medicine for strengthening the heart and spleen meridians providing increased vitality and energy ,as well as used to calm the Shen, thereby decreasing stress and increasing one’s life force and radiance. They are an exciting new superfruit easily incorporated in the daily diet in smoothies, trail mixes or simply enjoyed on its own. We are all searching for strategies for prevention and optimal wellbeing. Many of these superfoods surpass the nutritional profiles of many of the foods that frequent our daily dinner plates. They exhibit an impressive array of vitamins and minerals, high amounts of fibre and a range of unique phytonutrients that offer antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging compounds. 

Choose Life

Grow Young with HGH From the landmark book Grow Young with HGH comes the most powerful, over-thecounter health supplement in the history of man. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thought by the medical community to be necessary only to stimulate the body to full adult size and therefore unnecessary past the age of 20. Recent studies, however, have overturned this notion completely, discovering instead that the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age at which there is only a trace left in the body) and is the reason why the body ages and fails to regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.

in the blood at the same levels HGH existed in the blood when we were 25 years old.

There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are very comprehensive. Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985 under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treat dwarfism, was quickly recognized to stop aging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.

The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product which would cause your own natural HGH to be released again and do all the remarkable things it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the Modern medical science now regards aging as price of a coffee and donut a day. a disease that is treatable and preventable and that “aging”, the disease, is GHR is available now, just actually a compilation of various in time for the aging Baby diseases and pathologies, like a rise Boomers and everyone else in blood glucose and pressure to from age 30 to 90 who diabetes, skin wrinkling and so on. doesn’t want to age but All of these aging symptoms can be would rather stay young, stopped and rolled back by beautiful and healthy all of maintaining Growth Hormone levels the time. GHR DIV 2037839 ON

The new HGH releasers are winning converts from the synthetic HGH users as well, since GHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is very affordable.

GHR is a natural releaser, has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version and has no known drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is the direction medicine is going, to get the body to heal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift in medicine and, like any modern leapfrog advance, many others will be left in the dust holding their limited, or useless drugs and remedies. It is now thought that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it is today, where the computer industry was twenty years ago, that it will displace so many prescription and non-prescription drugs and health remedies that it is staggering to think of. The president of BIE Health Products, stated in a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting for these products since the 70’s”. We knew they would come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you want to stay on top of your game, physically and mentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionals who have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the state of the health care system in Canada which appears to be going into serious decline, it’s more important than ever to take pro-active steps to safeguard your health. Continued use of GHR will make a radical difference in your health. HGH is particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay independent in their own home, strong, healthy and alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communities. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers. HGH is known to relieve symptoms of Asthma, Angina, Chronic Fatigue, Constipation, Lower back pain and Sciatica, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration, Menopause, Fibromyalgia, Regular and Diabetic Neuropathy, Hepatitis, helps Kidney Dialysis and Heart and Stroke recovery. Soothing and Healing

Herbal Teas

By Sandrine Briatte, M.Sc. Herbal teas are well recognized to have an active effect on the human body. Depending on the plants used, their properties can be digestive, diuretic, soothing, antiseptic, circulatory and much more. Some herbal teas are the result of researched formulas from wild and organically grown plants to provide flavourful, health benefits. These herbal teas boast active ingredients that improve on our quality of life and help maintain a balanced body.

SYNERGY OF PLANTS FOR BETTER RESULTS Herbal formulas are designed to combine the synergy of plants. Some of them have special properties which can help reduce many discomforts. For instance, whorled mallow is known to help regulate the intestine. Its properties come from its mucilage which facilitates bowel movements without irritating the intestinal mucosa. Combined with other plants, whorled mallow can help us in different ways: it stimulates natural drainage and elimination of toxins; it eliminates substances that could contribute to the development of urinary system problems; it cleans the intestinal tract by its laxative action and it can be a remarkable ally for any weight-loss program.

MENOPAUSE AND HERBAL TEAS Moreover, infusions can contribute to our well-being during a key period of our life. Thus, the symptoms brought on by menopause are usually the same for everyone: hot flashes, profuse sweating, insomnia and anxiety. No matter how serious the case, there are ways to help reduce those effects by using herbal teas. Sipping a hot beverage isn’t usually what comes into mind when dealing with those symptoms. Yet, plant infusion allows us to extract its active substances. Once extracted, it can be taken cold or mixed with fruit juice, while still retaining all of its great natural properties.

In order to ease the symptoms occurring within this life-changing transition, some plants are especially recommended. Lemon balm and skullcap are renowned for their appeasing qualities. They help reduce anxiety and insomnia, thanks to their combined components. Sage works great on diaphoresis: it reduces profuse sweating. Its use could even result in memory enhancement according to some scientific researches. Peony, on the other hand, reduces those unbearable hot flashes. Finally, motherwort acts on palpitations by soothing the nervous system.

DURATION AND FREQUENCY OF USE Some plants can act upon ingestion (e.g. whorled mallow). But others are recommended to be taken on a regular basis to help reduce recurrent symptoms. Indeed, if you need to find a better sleep, for example, it will be more helpful to take an herbal tea on a regular basis. Herbal teas are also an important source of vitamins and minerals. So, they can contribute to improve your energy and your over-all health and well-being. Sandrine Briatte, B.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Sc. NATURAL BEAUTY

Supplements for

Autumn Skin Care

Get Beautiful Skin from Inside Out! By Nicola Kempinska, BKin, BA, ND After spending the summer months soaking up the sun’s rays, now is the perfect time to look at some of the best ways to nourish your skin, fight the signs of aging, and bring on a healthy glow, from the inside—and out! As well as naturally aging, our skin is continually exposed to the damaging effects of oxidative stress due to ultraviolet (UV) light and other environmental toxins. Such stresses reduce collagen, slow wound healing, thin the skin, and increase inflammation below the skin surface causing pigmentation. Eventually, collagen diminishes and thick tangled elastic fibres are formed – creating ‘Solar Elastosis’ – the term for classic sun-damaged skin seen in sun worshippers. The term ‘free radical’ is commonly used when discussing skin damage. Free radicals are volatile molecules that easily react with other molecules, resulting in potentially damaging effects. Fortunately, ‘antioxidants’ prevent or reduce damage caused by free radicals. Supplements containing antioxidants and other youthful properties can play an integral part in your daily “skin-care” routine, allowing you to get the nutrients you need to combat fine lines, age spots, sun damage, and the harshness of today’s external environment. Remember, antioxidants in = youthful skin! So, what are some of the key players in the game of supplement skincare?

VITAMIN C Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that both protects and replenishes the skin. This nutrient plays a key role in collagen 24 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

production, the main structural component of our skin. Collagen controls the strength, structure, firmness, and overall appearance of our skin. A higher intake of oral vitamin C has been associated with a reduction in wrinkle appearance, dryness, and skin atrophy. Additionally, when your skin has been exposed to UV rays, this savvy nutrient protects against UV-related free radical damage to the lining of cells. Topical application of vitamin C also protects the skin from UV light and improves the appearance of wrinkles.

VITAMIN A Research has shown that women with a wrinkled appearance have lower intakes of vitamin A. Supplementing with oral vitamin A stimulates collagen synthesis and counteracts free radical damage by protecting the skin so it can withstand injury. Vitamin A also improves fine wrinkles associated with the natural aging process, and helps decrease the appearance of under-eye circles. Topical vitamin A have been shown to work as an exfoliator, reducing signs of sun damage and skin aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.

VITAMIN E This fat-soluble vitamin is an essential part of the skin’s antioxidant defense, protecting it against UV radiation and environmental free radicals. Topical application effectively delivers the nutritional benefits of vitamin E, providing photo-protective and anti-inflammatory effects.

HDOct-NovOntario2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-09-21 2:10 PM Page 25

OMEGA-3 This fatty acid lessens the inflammatory response in skin layers after sun exposure, reducing damage to the skin. EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), commonly found in fish oil and indirectly from flax seed oil, is a key component for healthy looking skin. Research suggests that EPA reduces sunburn sensitivity and minimizes UV-damage. EPA helps skin retain its elasticity, prevents wrinkle formation, and stops skin thinning. EPA has also been shown to increase the proteins that rebuild the skin and improve its appearance.

ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID (ALA) This powerful antioxidant is unique in that it is both fatand water-soluble, easily absorbing through both the external lipid layers of the skin and into the water-based interior of the cell. ALA fights free radicals and regulates the production of nitric oxide, which controls blood flow to the skin promoting a glowing, vibrant complexion. Topical ALA has been shown to significantly improve clinical characteristics related to photo-aging of facial skin.

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID (CLA) Found naturally in sunflower or safflower oil, CLA has been found to have a variety of anti-aging effects on the skin. Taking CLA orally has been shown to modify skin composition, reduce overall photo-damage, decrease hyperpigmentation, and minimize lines & wrinkles. Topical CLA significantly improves the appearance of fine lines and the overall appearance of the skin.

GAMMA-LINOLENIC ACID (GLA) Evening primrose oil, blackcurrant-seed oil, and borage oil are rich in this essential fatty acid. As the skin matures, GLA keeps the skin hydrated by reducing water loss. It has anti-inflammatory properties counteracting inflammation caused by the sun’s UV light. As we get older, our bodies don’t utilize GLA as effectively, so oral supplementation can help to significantly improve skin moisture, elasticity, firmness, fatigue resistance, and skin smoothness.

FIT FOR LIFE No-Fail Fall Approaches for

Weight Management

Drop Pounds with Exercise and Nutrition By Chanel Cressman, BSc, ND When it comes to weight management, there are a lot of factors that come into play. Losing weight is a challenging venture, and those who try to lose weight sometimes end up feeling they’ve been set up for failure. It isn’t just about cutting back on calories – otherwise why would it be so hard? Once you’ve lost the weight, for many, keeping it off can be equally frustrating. There are many different factors that impact our ability to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Determining what your body responds to physically, and what your brain responds to emotionally, can be the golden ticket to your success. Naturopathic medicine has many modalities to help support anyone working to maintain a healthy weight.

NUTRITION With any weight management program, proper nutrition is foundational. In terms of calories, quantity as well as quality of calories plays a big role. Our cells need energy to function, and different cells require different fuel sources. Just like your car needs oil, windshield fluid, and gasoline to run smoothly, our bodies need proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Feeding our body these ingredients in specific amounts at specific intervals will help to optimize your body’s needs, leaving you feeling full and satisfied. 26 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

HORMONE BALANCING Understanding one’s hormonal balance also plays a big role in weight management. Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone all impact how much water we are retaining and whether we convert our food into muscle or fat. Our thyroid is the “master controller” of our body. It tells each and every cell how quickly or slowly to function. As a naturopathic doctor, I work with herbs, nutritional supplements, and acupuncture to help address any hormonal imbalances I see in my patients.

LIFESTYLE It is essential to consider our lifestyle habits when working to meet weight goals. Establishing a good routine that includes regular sleep, exercise, eating, and stress management techniques is vital. Since our lives are very busy, and many of us are burnt out all too often, stress can be difficult to manage from day-to-day. Having a personal coach to help you organize and support a balanced lifestyle can sometimes be the missing piece.

AN Natural atural Weight Loss Loss Weight WONDER WONDER !

... s t fi e n e B 3 1 capsule. PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH It is important to address and consider our underlying psychological and emotional habits and perceptions when it comes to food. Exploring our relationship with food as well as our examining our own body image, is an important step in setting appropriate weight management goals. Various and specialized counseling techniques form another important modality I use as an ND when working with my patients struggling with weight management.

GREEN TEA AND RASPBERRY KETONE SUPPLEMENTS Wouldn't it be lovely to just take a pill and be able to shed a few pounds? Unfortunately, it's not that easy. There are no replacements for exercise and a quality diet – but let’s examine some of the interesting research out there on a few products. Green tea is one supplement often associated with weight loss. Green tea contains two important compounds that help you burn fat: caffeine and catechins. Caffeine helps to stimulate thermogenesis, a process by which heat is generated, increasing energy expenditure. It also works to increase hormone-sensitive lipase (an enzyme) which promotes the breakdown of fat. Catechins in green tea help to slow the breakdown of norepinephrine (adrenaline), by inhibiting an enzyme. Consequently, this increases your sympathetic nervous system (SNS), resulting in an increase in energy expenditure, and the burning of more fat. Raspberry ketones are another “hot” weight loss product these days. Just like green tea, raspberry ketones have been shown to affect norepinephrine (adrenaline) increasing lipolysis (fat-burning). It does this by bringing hormone-sensitive lipase (a hormone required for the breakdown of fat) to the fat cells so it can activate on them. Raspberry ketones also improve weight loss by preventing the absorption of fat in the intestines. Weight management is certainly not a one-size-fits-all experience. Since everyone’s circumstances and needs are unique, we also need unique, personalized treatment strategies. Naturopathic medicine, with its many tools, can provide a wide range of options and approaches to help manage weight. Picking the right combination that works for you is what will ensure your success!  Chanel Cressman, BSc ND is a licenced naturopathic doctor with a private practice in Kitchener called Sage Naturopathic Clinic. Chanel has a strong interest in women’s and pediatric health. She has additional training as a Doula and is a member of the Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Having grown up on a farm, Chanel considers herself a real “foodie” and loves examining the relationship between food and health, and works to incorporate this into her practice.

Featured by the Ontario Trails Council (www.ontariotrails.on.ca) and Hike Ontario (www.hikeontario.com) the Caledon Trailway is 35 km long with trailheads at Terra Cotta and Highway 9, just north of Palgrave. Maps are also available on the town of Caledon’s website (www.town.caledon.on.ca), at local businesses in Caledon and at the town office.

The peaceful, scenic, packed gravel trail follows the route of the Hamilton and Northern Railway, built in the 1870s. Access and parking are available in Terra Cotta, Cheltenham, Inglewood, Caledon East and Palgrave. The trail is bordered by farm fields and woodlots over rolling countryside. It crosses a deep valley of the Humber River west of Palgrave, the Credit River in Inglewood, and smaller creeks at other locations.

THE HAMILTON TO BRANTFORD RAIL–TRAIL Drawing both cyclists and hikers and considered one of the best trails in southern Ontario for its long, stone dust trail and scenic views the Hamilton to Brantford Rail-Trail is 32 km in length. Built on the abandoned railbed of the former Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Railway, this entirely off-road trail is made up of two connecting trails, the West Hamilton – Jerseyville Trail maintained by Hamilton Region Conservation Authority and the Jerseyville – Brantford trail maintained by the Grand River Conservation Authority. View a map on-line at: www.grandriver.ca. The West Hamilton - Jerseyville trailhead and parking area starts on the west side of Hamilton, near McMaster University at the corner of Main St. and Ewen Rd. The trail passes through Dundas Valley Conservation Area and travels through Jerseyville to Brantford. The Brantford end of the trail crosses under Highway 403 into Brantford, and connects with Brantford's Gordon Glaves Memorial Pathway through the city. The Brantford Jaycee's trailhead and parking area is located on the eastern edge of Brantford, just south of Mohawk Lake on Mohawk Road. The Glaves trail in turn connects with the SC Johnson Trail from Brantford to Paris which then connects with the Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail. For those seeking serious distance, links to Paris and Cambridge extend the trail to 80 km.

THE ELORA-CATARCT TRAILWAY See Lake Belwood and the picturesque Grand River Valley on the Elora–Cataract Trailway a 47 km trail linking the Credit Valley Watershed to the Grand River Watershed and communities along the way. The Elora Cataract Trailway was originally the route of the Credit Valley Railway constructed in 1879. The Trailway is three meters wide with a stone screened surface which is great for walking with strollers, wheelchairs or cycling. Trailheads are in Elora on Gerrie Road and in Cataract on Cataract Road at Forks of the Credit Provincial Park. Parking lot locations are in Fergus, Belwood, Erin, Orton and Hillsburgh. View a map at: www.trailway.org. The Elora Cataract Trailway is owned by the Credit Valley and Grand River ConservationAuthorities and is managed by them in cooperation with the Elora Cataract Trailway Association. The trail passes through a glaciated landscape with forest and through farm fields. HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012 29

COLD & FLU Support Your Immune System to

Protect Your Health

By Jay S. Jacobs Winter is on its way, and you know what that means. No, not family, presents, big meals and skiing – though those are around, too. The winter is a time when your body is under attack from outside forces. It is a time when you are often outdoors, cold, or wet. It’s also the time when most colds and flus are spreading through your office or school. Luckily, you have a defender: the body’s immune function. Immunity is defined as “a biological term that describes a state of having sufficient biological defenses to avoid infection, disease, or other unwanted biological invasion.” Unwanted biological invasion. Sounds scary. So doctor, doctor, give us the news. What are we supposed to do to keep our immunity huge? “About a hundred years ago, when pollution in its many forms and various chemical toxins were not present, we could get all that we needed nutritionally from our food,” says Wayne Diamond, ND and owner of Diamond-Herpanacine Associates. “But as the twentieth century brought thousands of pollutants into our 30 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

environment, no longer is good food pure enough to supply what our bodies need to live. Quite simply, the human body cannot fully absorb nutrients that are continually intermingled with the vast amount of pollutants, toxins and pesticides that we face on a daily basis.”

VITAMINS, MINERALS AND HERBS FOR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM To counter-act nutritional deficiencies and to support the immune system Diamond recommends specific vitamins, minerals and herbs. Vitamin A-beta-carotene stimulates overall immune function by increasing the number of infection fighting cells in the body and fighting off free radicals. It is also helpful in fighting off infections and the harmful effects of stress. Astragalus, ligustrum and echinacea are strong supporters of immune function by increasing antibodies and white blood cell

HDOct-NovOntario2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-09-21 2:10 PM Page 31

while positively affecting interferon, one of the body’s natural viral-fighting substances. Zinc is also essential for a healthy immune system by helping to build infection-fighting cells. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant and immune builder. It works in the body to stimulate the production of good cells that help fight off bacteria as well as increase important proteins that help to destroy viruses and bacteria. Selenium boosts your immunity with its powerful antioxidant effect and protects the integrity of the cells. Last, but definitely not least, vitamin C is an extremely important immune booster for many reasons. When taken daily, studies prove this water-soluble vitamin can protect cells, fight free radicals with its antioxidant properties, and increase the production of white blood cells and antibodies. “Many of these wonderful ingredients have been used worldwide for thousands of years to heal and bring desired health results,” Diamond said. “I have been a strong proponent of their safe and successful results for many years.” When taken in a formula, all of those proven ingredients will work synergistically to help boost immunity and improve resilience against colds and illness during the winter months. Other fall and winter immune boosting tips are – get a lot of rest (that means stop surfing YouTube until two in the morning), avoid bad habits (smoking, excessive alcohol, excess spending), drink plenty of water (Chug! Chug!), try to eat healthy (no, lowfat Oreos don’t count), wash your hands regularly with soap and water and though baby, it’s cold outside, don’t forget to exercise! Wayne Diamond, ND created the award winning Herpanacine formula. For over 22 years, Herpanacine has offered clear outbreakfree skin as an added bonus to a healthy immune system. www.diamondformulas.com

A Naturopathic Approach to

Fertility and Pregnancy

By Ellen Simone, BPHE, HD, ND One day while discussing the topic of pregnancy a patient of mine said, “The ripeness of the fruit depends on the richness of the soil”. When I asked her what she meant she explained that in her culture pregnancy is described in terms of planting a seed in rich soil, nourishing the growth of a tree and harvesting the fruit. This analogy is a great way to describe the naturopathic approach to fertility and pregnancy. It demonstrates the need for preparation, care and attention during all stages of pregnancy to ensure that mom, dad and baby are the healthiest they can be. Naturopathic medicine can support you at any point along the way to help you produce rich and bountiful fruit!

PRE-CONCEPTION CARE: THE RICHNESS OF THE SOIL The richness of the soil refers to a women’s health status prior to conceiving. Ideally a woman should strive to be the healthiest she can be in preparation to fully support and nourish a growing baby. Key factors that are assessed and treated by naturopathic doctors when it comes to pre-conception care include: hormone imbalances leading to menstrual cycle 32 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

irregularities and miscarriage, women’s health conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome, and lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and caffeine intake. They also discuss mental and emotional readiness and concerns surrounding pregnancy and having children and treat high stress levels which elevate cortisol affecting hormone levels.

MALE FERTILITY: PLANTING THE SEED It takes two to tango! Male pre-conception care is just as important as female preconception care because the sperm is what carries 50% of the DNA needed to create your baby. One important fact to take note of is the cycle of sperm development takes approximately 64 days to complete. That means the quality of sperm released today, will be influenced by a man’s lifestyle choices up to two months prior. Key factors influencing sperm count and motility (sperm’s ability to swim) that are assessed and treated by naturopathic doctors include: lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and caffeine intake, as well

HDOct-NovOntario2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-09-21 2:10 PM Page 33

as, nutrition and nutrient status such as ensuring adequate amounts of vitamins A, C, E, B12, folic acid and minerals selenium and zinc essential to the production of high quality sperm. Naturopaths also discuss detoxification of heavy metals and other chemicals affecting sperm production and high stress levels which elevate cortisol and can decrease testosterone levels and negatively affect sperm production and libido.

PREGNANCY: NURTURING THE GROWTH OF THE TREE The nine months of pregnancy are similar to the process of a little seedling growing into a big, strong tree. Just as a seedling needs nourishment, love and support to grow, so does a pregnant woman and her developing child. Plants also need to be adaptable to their constantly changing environment. Each woman’s pregnancy is a unique and individual experience and naturopathic doctors can support a woman’s changing needs throughout the journey of pregnancy.

DELIVERY AND POST-PARTUM CARE: HARVESTING AND ENJOYING THE FRUIT Congratulations! The tree is fully grown and ready to bear fruit which now brings a host of change and challenges. Naturopathic doctors are available assist with delivery and postpartum care for mother and baby. The Association of Perinatal Naturopathic Doctors (http://apnd.org) is a great resource when looking for a naturopathic doctor who is also trained as a doula (birthing assistant) to be present at the delivery of your baby.

Tips for Optimizing Fertility 1. ASSUME YOU ARE PREGNANT There is truth in the power of positive thinking and setting the intention for welcoming a child into your life. It will also help you follow the next few tips!

2. SUPPLEMENT Take a prenatal vitamin and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement regularly. Speak to your family doctor or naturopathic doctor about the safety of your medications and natural supplements during pregnancy and change them accordingly.

3. ELIMINATE Eliminate alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods from your diet. Identify and eliminate environmental exposure to toxins and consider doing a supervised detoxification program with the help of your naturopathic doctor.

4. SMOKING & HEALTH CONDITIONS Quit smoking and recreational drugs. See your family doctor or naturopathic doctor for assistance. Visit your family doctor or naturopathic doctor to address existing health conditions.

5. COMMUNICATE AND MANAGE STRESS

6. TRACK YOUR MENSTRUAL CYCLE

Communicate with your partner about your feelings regarding having children. To manage stress, make time for self-care by doing something you enjoy like exercise, yoga, meditation, listening to music, etc.

The basal body temperature chart can provide important information to determine when you are fertile and identify menstrual cycle issues. More information visit: http://www.babycenter.ca

The Evolution of the Water Bottle

Hot and Cold For Hydration By Steve Swaisland Five or six years ago most of us were using refillable plastic bottles to keep up our daily hydration needs. A large percentage of the population really had no idea many of the vessels we were drinking from contained a chemical called BPA. Bisphenol A or BPA as it is commonly know acts as an environmental estrogen and once it is ingested it can disrupt proper hormone functioning, alter genes and interferes with normal physical and behavioural development. Once the news of BPA hit the headlines it was like an over night change and the eliminate the BPA fight began. Many companies came to aid of concerned consumers by creating bottles of all sizes and shapes made of stainless steel and glass. However, many consumers did not like the fact the outside of their steel bottle would get very cold, making it uncomfortable to hold on to. With all these cold bottles came condensation and this was wreaking havoc on our hands, clothes, bags and desks. Everything in the bottles path was getting soaked. Some companies came up with a cover to help remedy the cold issue but they could not solve the condensation issue. Consumers were still left looking for the perfect solution.

Since then, a few companies have developed a stainless steel double wall, vacuum insulated bottle that does away with the cold hands and wet everything. In fact these bottles can even be used for hot beverages, from tea and coffee to every cold beverage on the planet. Regardless of temperature of the bottles contents you can not tell on the outside weather it is hot or cold. Even on the hottest summer day the contents will stay cold all day long, which is something no single wall bottle can do. We had our bottle on vacation with us in the Caribbean, we were on the beach in full sun all day and our bottle still had ice inside after 8 hours! On the flip side the contents won’t freeze either, leave these types of bottles in your car on a cold winters night and the beverage will not freeze. Some even have included tea and ice strainers so the ice and loose tea stay in the bottle not in your mouth or the nozzle. The next time you are in the market for a new bottle visit your local health food store or go online and look for an insulated solution.

Feeling Low, Get a Lift from these

Mood Boosters

By Laura Stix, HBSc, CCHt, ND Life is splashed with a wonderful spectrum of colour, but sometimes we feel like our side of the palate is all blues, greys and blacks. The trick to embracing life with vibrancy and happiness lies in the mental framework we have created and how that impacts our perception of the world. Learning to move with, rather than against, the ebb and flow of life allows us to confront our lows with acceptance and learning, and move gracefully and easily into the highs with an even greater appreciation for them. Change your perception, change your world…both mentally and physically. Sounds cliché and idealistic, but neuroscience would disagree. The reality is that our mental framework sets the stage for how we perceive and respond to every person, event and circumstance in our lives, and more importantly, this framework is malleable. The more an individual states “This is the way I am” in reference to a negative behavior or feeling they wish to change, the more they have resigned themselves to that state of being. No different from the placebo effect: whatever you firmly believe becomes your reality. Our thoughts can affect our biochemistry and our biochemistry can affect our thoughts. So how do we shift this mental framework into one that bounces back from life’s hiccups and sustains a solid platform for health and happiness?

SELF AWARENESS Become aware of the words you use. Do you use negative vocabulary? Do you talk down to yourself? Do you use words that set negative limitations to who you want to be? Words like “I can’t”, “I’m awful at that”, “I could never do that”? We run on habits, so create new ones! Reword your statements into something positive and repeat them (if only in your mind). Take notice of your posture. Make sure you raise your chin, lift your chest and keep your eyes elevated when you feel low…and force a smile! Research shows we’re hard wired to emotionally match what we’re physically expressing. Wear clothes that make you feel good about yourself. 36 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

HDOct-NovOntario2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-09-21 2:11 PM Page 37

Are you ruminating over something that is bringing you down? Consider writing down everything you’re feeling or would like to say to someone and then burn the letter and allow your feelings to go with it. Or take 10 minutes to daydream what it would look like to put all those thoughts and feelings into perhaps a balloon and watch it drift away never to return…or incinerate them…or have them sink into an abyss…be creative and notice how much lighter you feel after choosing to release the negativity. The power of the mind, in part, rests on the fact it cannot discern a real experience from an imagined one.

BIOCHEMICALLY Force yourself to get active! Use exercise as a natural mood booster and allow the endorphins to bring you back into a positive high. Try a new activity you haven’t done before or join a team. As social creatures, touch is extremely therapeutic. Cuddling up with a pet, going for a massage, holding hands with a loved one, exchanging a hug…all of these ramp up the feel good hormone oxytocin, decreasing tension and boosting mood. If grey days seem to be getting you down, bright light therapy can be very beneficial. What’s more is that even nonseasonal depression, post-partum depression, and premenstrual depression have all shown favourable response to light therapy. Purchase a lamp and brighten your day! Throw your mood into artistic expression. Listen to music, sing, song-write, play an instrument…paint, draw, colour, photograph, design, build, create! Choose activities that release and lift your mood, not those that keep you brooding in it.

Give of yourself. Volunteer, share, give someone a surprise gift or an unexpected note of appreciation. When we warm another’s day, it can’t help but warm our own. Transform “misery loves company”, into “happiness breeds happiness.” The more you do this, the more the positive feedback loop will reinforce this new, feel-good behavior! Laughter is medicine…we all know this. So find a comedy club, watch funny flicks, meet up with a friend that makes you laugh, search YouTube for funny clips…anything that will make you chuckle. From a therapeutic standpoint, the body can’t tell the difference between a fake laugh or a real one; as before, forcing yourself to laugh also forces your mood and behavior to align with it.

If you find your efforts still leave you sitting in a rut that runs longer or deeper than expected, then it’s time to seek a medical professional. Naturopathic medicine is an excellent gateway to uncovering possible medical causes and can effectively bring the body and mind back into balance. Adjunctive treatment with clinical hypnotherapy has proven invaluable, as it can effectively uncover and shift problematic or limiting mental frameworks. Laura Stix, HBSc, CCHt, ND practices family medicine in Guelph and Waterloo, Ontario. WOMEN’S HEALTH A New Way of Thinking About

Breast Cancer By Alexander Mostovoy, HD, DHMS, BCCT I’ll get straight to the point – breast cancer, for the most part, is a preventable disease. Yes, you heard it right – surprised? How do we know this? Well, let’s take a look at the following statistics. Breast cancer rates in North America are twice as high as in South America, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. In fact, AICR scientists estimate about 4 out of every 10 breast cancer cases in the US and Canada could be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, drinking less alcohol and being more physically active. There is also convincing evidence breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer. Obesity rates throughout South America are considerably lower than in North America. In fact, according to WHO statistics, 55% of Brazilians, for example, are within the Body Mass Index “healthy” range of 18-24. Only 36 percent of North Americans are within this range. WHO figures also show the average adult in Brazil consumes about 1.2 gallons (5.3 liters) of pure alcohol per year. The average American adult consumes 2.1 gallons (8.1 liters) per year. When it comes to physical activity, the difference gets a bit more startling. The percentage of Brazilians who are highly active is 9 times the number of Americans -37% vs. just 4%. And finally, according to La Leche League, 93 percent of Brazilian mothers breastfeed their children, compared to 74 percent of American mothers. The fact breast cancer rates in South American countries such as Brazil are nearly half that of the US and Canada is a clear reminder the everyday choices we make about our diet and level of physical activity are completely relevant. We have spent decades creating awareness about breast cancer, including billions of dollars promoting screening and early detection – yet cancer incidence has continued to rise every year. Perhaps we should focus our resources on promoting prevention. We could get the message out that a better prevention prescription looks like this: women can reduce the risk of breast cancer by making basic lifestyle changes such as eating healthy, moving about more, staying lean, and drinking less alcohol. I propose that we change our focus in the month of October from breast cancer awareness to breast cancer prevention by providing more relevant and realistic information to assist women in developing a more healthy lifestyle, thereby proactively reducing their risk and incidence of breast cancer. Alexander Mostovoy is a writer, researcher and public speaker on women’s health issues. He is recognized as a leading authority on the application of clinical thermography. He is a Founder and CEO of Thermography Clinic Inc. Thermography is a safe screening approach to proactive breast health. Visit ThermographyClinic.com, or call 416.636.2916 to locate an imaging center nearest you.

Ask Your Naturopath about Nitric Oxide (NO) Level Testing

Nitric Acid – A Miracle Molecule WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT ENOUGH? Many symptoms of nitric oxide insufficiency occur with age: loss of energy, we begin to forget things, our sexual health and performance declines and we begin to develop aches and pains. The loss of nitric oxide may be responsible for many of these symptoms of aging and at the root of cardiovascular disease. Restoring your nitric oxide level is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

MORE NITRIC ACID, LESS ARTHRITIS PAIN NO is decreased in joints stressed by “chronic load-induced stress” (such as knee arthritis) and “biochemical change-induced stresses” (such as the oxidative damage in bones caused by diets high in saturated fat). NO-based intervention may produce substantial pain relief to people with painful osteoarthritis.

SEXUAL FUNCTION Adequate amounts of Nitric Oxide are necessary to produce dilation of penile arteries to allow sufficient amounts of blood to enter the penis. The same applies to women; without proper blood flow to the clitoris, they cannot experience orgasm or increased sexual sensitivity.

AGING IS THE RISK FACTOR By Nathan Bryan, Ph. D Imagine for a moment a “miracle molecule” that could dramatically improve your health.

THE NITRIC OXIDE NOBEL PRIZE Three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 for the discovery of the critical cardiovascular role of nitric oxide. The discovery of nitric oxide (NO) and its function is one of the most important in the history of cardiovascular medicine. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule. In less than a second, NO signals: arteries to relax and expand, immune cells to kill bacteria and cancer cells and brain cells to communicate. Truly the miracle molecule – it can: prevent high blood pressure, keep your arteries young and flexible, prevent, slow, or reverse the buildup of artery – clogging arterial plaques; help stop the formation of artery clogging blood clots, the result of plaques bursting – spilling their contents into the blood stream. By doing all of the above, it can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke, the #1 and #3 killers of North Americans. It can also reduce the risk of diabetes and disastrous diabetic complications, such as chronic kidney disease, blindness, hard-to-heal foot and leg ulcers, and amputations. 40 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

There are many risk factors for heart disease-high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history. But one risk factor that is common to everybody is reaching age 40. Aging is a risk factor for a heart attack or stroke because it leads to an accumulation of protein in artery walls, making them stiffer. As you age, so does your endothelium: you don’t generate as much NO.

RESTORING NITRIC OXIDE Thankfully, nitric oxide restoration is not only possible but easy! There are plenty of ways to generate more NO: a diet rich in NO-producing nitrate and nitrite (from leafy greens); NO-boosting supplements, NO-restoring regular exercise; and lifestyle factors that preserve and increase NO, such as sufficient sleep and stress control. Visit and learn more at : www.neo40.ca

ANTI-AGING Regrow Telomeres to

Live to Be 200? By Murray McMahon Live to be 200 years old? Impossible you say! Did you know, that thousands of scientists, doctors, movie stars, athletes, politicians and wealthy business people are taking a rare extract of an age-old chinese herb and they are betting it will allow them to live to be 200 years-old and beyond. So, what do they know that we don’t? In Dec 2010, Ronald De Pinho a researcher at Harvard gave aged mice (the equivalent of 80 human years) a natural substance and within a month those same aged, and on their last legs, mice were running around like 40 year-olds. They had put on muscle, grew back hair and were starting to reproduce. In the August edition of Elle Magazine, the headline on one of its featured articles reads, “Wanna Live to Be 200?” And in the same month, Popular Science magazine writes about an anti-aging scientist, Bill Andrews, Ph.D. in Molecular and Population Genetics and CEO of Sierra Sciences, who runs mega marathons (50 to 100 mile runs) and comes in the top third of the finishers. Andrews is 59 and fully believes he will run a 7 minute mile at 130 years old. Along with Andrews, thousands of people have been regrowing their telomeres for about 5 years, and they are finding their bodies getting younger and stronger, and their minds more agile. They sleep better, feel better, have fewer colds and flus and just generally are healthier. A new branch of biological science is studying the DNA of the cell and more specifically the shortening of telomeres as the cause of aging.

NOBEL PRIZE TECHNOLOGY In 1984 Elizabeth Blackburn and her assistant Carol Greider of the U of C, at Berkeley discovered the telomerase enzyme that causes telomeres in the chromosomes in the nucleus of the cell to lengthen. In 1999, Ms. Blackburn and Greider along with Jack Slozak were awarded the Nobel Prize in Biology. Move ahead to 1999 and we find Ph.D Bill Andrews, the mega marathoner, has led his research team at Geron, a US based biotech research company, in finding the gene that turns on the telomerase enzyme, which allows the telomeres to regrow. About that time, while searching for substances that would turn on the telomerase, they tested an ancient herb from Inner Mongolia. In a ground breaking manner they devised a patented method of extraction and testing of a single rare molecule, which has resulted in the world’s only available substance that will regrow telomeres. By 2002, a major investor in Geron licenced the patented molecule from them and commenced with 5 years of extensive testing. Double-blind testing showed the molecule not only grew telomeres in the chromosomes of everyone who took it but proved its safety beyond any doubt. The resulting nutraceutical is a natural extract form the herb astragalus. 42 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

THE END OF AGE RELATED DISEASES? Age related diseases start at about age 25 but don’t manifest themselves until about age 40. Arthritis, cancer, heart and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stomach and bowel disorders, erectile dysfunction, bone loss, failing eyesight, liver and kidney malfunction . . . you name it are for the most part linked to the aging of the body. Allopathic, conventional, medical doctors treat these diseases with an array of prescription drugs, surgery and radiation. Naturopaths, homeopaths and other natural health practitioners use vitamins herbs, special supplements, massage and other modalities to also control and bring relief to the human body. But, the clock keeps ticking. And, our cells continue to make their inevitable way to the day when they can’t divide anymore. Users of telomerase activator report improved eyesight with many having to have their prescriptions changed to a lesser power. One of the first experiences people feel is increased energy and stamina. They feel stronger, happier, and experience fewer colds and flu. Erectile dysfunction in men and osteoporosis in women are two age related diseases where great improvement has been reported. Not all astragalus extracts are the same. Telomerase activator (molecule #) 65 is a very rare occurrence in nature and does not exist in most astragalus species. After its introduction in 2007, a number of companies tried to jump on the bandwagon with claims of telomere lengthening at a much lower cost. They did not do the testing and verification of the molecule (or even find another source of the telomerase activator) but have tried to associate themselves with the result of the Geron technology. TA Sciences, the company that is the sole company licenced by Geron to make telomerase activator, tested 4 of the leading brands of astragalus extracts and found that there was absolutely no molecule 65 in any of the brands. Astragalus and its extracts do have many life enhancing benefits but growing your cell’s telomeres is not one of them. As Andrews says, the only telomerase activator he takes is telomerase activator (molecule#) 65. The reason is it works, is safe and is the only tested, proven, approved and commercially available telomerase activator in the world. So will we live to be 200 years and beyond? The verdict is still out and time will tell. What we do know is that those regrowing their telomeres report amazing regression of their age related diseases far beyond what any placebo could accomplish. TA-65 is available in Canada through licenced doctors, clinics and better natural health (food) stores. Core Natural Limited is the Canadian distributor for TA-65. For more information and the list of studies, news articles and where to buy, go to www.corenatural.ca or phone 289-217-3004.
