The World Health Organization and the American Institute for Cancer Research estimate between sixty-seven and seventy-two percent of all cancer cases are preventable and that prevention offers the most cost-effective, long-term strategy for the control of cancer, as prevention of a chronic disease is infinitely less expensive than treatment.

Several of the risk factors for cancer such as tobacco use, diet and obesity, activity levels, occupational exposures, alcohol use, and UV exposure are within our individual control for the most part.

Some cancer risk is out of our control and there are no guarantees either. Cancer doesn’t discriminate as those with the

healthiest of lifestyles can still develop this feared disease, but significantly reducing risk is within reach.

With respect to reducing risk, there’s no shortage of confusion. It seems you can’t turn on the TV, surf the net, or poke around on social media without being inundated with the latest tip, supplement, so-called superfood or fear-mongering that’s either going to spare you from cancer or cause it. It’s extremely important to not lose sight of the forest for the trees and get bogged down with the minutia of dietary dogma, others’ philosophies, rules, and hyperbole. Rather, focus on what the bulk of the evidence from well-designed research has shown and make small, meaningful changes every day that will give you the biggest return on your investment.

The World Cancer Research Fund’s report Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Prevention of Cancer. A Global Report is the culmination of a review of 7,000 rigorously designed scientific studies by 21 world renowned scientists who distilled the findings into nine general recommendations and specific recommendations for two subgroups. It’s worth noting, that on the surface these may seem like common sense or perhaps too good to be true; if reducing almost three-quarters of all cancers was this simple, then everybody would be doing it. The fact of the matter is most Canadians routinely miss the mark. As a specific example, the average number of servings of fruits and vegetables Canadians are getting every day is about 4 ½ or about half of the recommended 7 to 10 per day.

The World Cancer Research Fund’s Nine General Recommendations 1) Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight.

2) Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day. Limit sedentary behaviour. 3) Avoid sugar drinks. Limit consumption of energy/calorie-rich foods.

4) Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, 100% whole grains, and pulses (chickpeas, lentils, dried peas and beans). 5) Limit consumption of red meats and processed meats.

6) If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to 2 for men and 1 for women a day.

7) Limit consumption of foods with a lot of salt and highly processed foods with salt (sodium).

8) Don’t rely on supplements to protect against cancer. 9) Avoid tobacco including smoking or chewing it.

Recommendations for Two Sub-Groups

1) For new mothers, try to exclusively breastfeed for up to 6 months and then add other liquids and solids.

2) For cancer survivors, follow the recommendations for cancer prevention.

Other Considerations

1) Avoid excess sun exposure, avoid burning. 2) Minimize stress. While stress in and of itself isn’t a risk factor for cancer, being under stress may be a barrier to making healthier choices, can cause to derail from our regular routine, skip the gym, eat on the run, use alcohol to destress; in short, put our self-care on hold.

Cancer is not simply the result of having ‘unlucky genes’; most cancers develop through the interaction of our genes and the environment. While we can’t change our genes, we do have some degree of control over how our environment interacts with them. Cancer risk is estimated to be attributed to 31% for tobacco use, 31% for poor diet and obesity, 5% for physical inactivity, 3% for habitual alcohol and 2% for excessive UV exposure, meaning you can lower cancer risk by a whopping 72%. t

How to Make a Fresh Start this Spring By Rosanna Lee, PHEc., MHSc., BASc.

Many of us flip the house upside down during this season to tidy our rooms, kitchen cabinets, desks, garden beds or closets – to refresh and to reorganize our living and work spaces. Yet, it can also be a time to reevaluate and “tidy up” our personal health and make new or additional changes to our diet, physical activity and other lifestyle factors. If you have not already made changes, ideas like quitting smoking, drinking less alcohol, reducing personal stress, getting enough nutrition, planning healthier meals, and, or scheduling for more leisure time are great ideas that can help you stay on track with your health goals.

However, the reality for most of us is that it is harder to accomplish these things when we are constantly juggling between work, family and personal responsibilities. Not everyone is able to meet the daily dietary or physical activity recommendations as encouraged by Health Canada… and this is understandable. Truth is, we sometimes need help. This is perhaps the reason why over 47% of Canadian women today use nutrition supplements on a regular basis to maintain their health and to prevent the onset of illnesses like osteoporosis, vision problems, joint pain and other health issues.

For the majority of us with a healthy appetite and a nutritionally-balanced diet, supplementation is not necessary. However, under certain conditions, nutrition supplementation can be beneficial if:

• You are nutrient deficient • You are elderly • You are pregnant, lactating and, or breastfeeding • You are food insecure • You are on a special diet (vegetarian and vegans) • You are on special medications • You are a chronic drug user • You are a chronic alcohol drinker • You have certain chronic diseases (that may prevent you from getting adequate vitamins, minerals or specific nutrients)

There are always other special conditions where nutrition supplements and fortifiedfoods may be necessary.

Calcium

As most of us know, calcium is essential to the maintenance of strong bones. Women are more likely at risk than men to have less bone density and to develop osteoporosis with increasing age.

According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), women between 19-50 years of age should aim for 1,000 mg per day. Pregnant or lactating women between 14-18 years of

age should aim for 1,300 mg per day. Those that are pregnant or lactating between the ages of 19-50 should aim for 1,000 mg per day. Meanwhile, women over 51+ years of age should aim for 1,200 mg per day. When choosing supplements, opt for smaller dose tablets (500 mg or less), as calcium is better absorbed in smaller quantities throughout the day.

Vitamin D

In addition to helping your body absorb the needed calcium, vitamin D has been found in some studies to reduce one’s risk for breast cancer, while offering protection from both ovarian cancer and diabetes. Vitamin D also plays a key role in promoting muscle function, preventing rickets, reducing inflammation, promoting cell growth and maintaining healthy immune function! If you’re not getting enough vitamin D from food sources, you can always supplement. The great thing about vitamin D is that you can also get it from natural sunlight. uuu

Folic acid or Folate

This is a B vitamin that is often found in prenatal multivitamins to support pregnancy. Folic acid or folate are essentially the same thing, except folic acid is a manmade form of folate (also perfectly safe). The reason why folate is of concern is because women tend not to get all the folic acid they need from food alone, particularly when it comes to supporting a healthy pregnancy. Getting enough folic acid before and during pregnancy can help to prevent major birth defects like spina bifida where the baby’s spinal column does not close to protect the spinal cord or anencephaly where most or all of the baby’s brain does not fully develop.

Vitamin B12

If you are planning, or are on a vegetarian, vegan, or reduced-animal protein diet (of any degree), you may want to look at your vitamin B12 intake. Since B12 is naturally found in food sources of meat, fish, egg, dairy products and yeast extracts (like brewer’s yeast), it is common to see inadequate levels in women who have low or no animal-based protein in their diets. Lack of B12 can cause anemia and reduce the number of red blood cells in your body. Women who suffer from bulimia or anorexia nervosa can also experience B12 deficiency and should see a dietitian, psychologist and, or counsellor for help.

Iron

Iron does a lot for our bodies – it carries fresh oxygen to our tissues, assists in the production of red blood cells, supports healthy immune function, brain development, regulates our body temperature and is also essential for proper growth and maintenance. Women should be concerned whether they are taking enough iron because every month. Iron is lost through menstruation (your period). The History of ESSIAC Tea ®

Every year, all over the world, approximately 14 million people are diagnosed with cancer. This year – just as in every other year – more than half of those 14 million people diagnosed are going to die. There’s an ongoing information war between “conventional” cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery) and “alternative” cancer treatments (using foods, herbs, and other natural modalities). Whatever your thoughts on conventional medicine or your personal choice about following standard medical advice, there are available holistic therapies you can use in conjunction with your current cancer treatment to increase your chances of surviving. Saving lives should be everyone’s goal by any means necessary. We need to stop fighting so we can stop people from dying.

This is a fight a Canadian nurse understood well. Rene Caisse treated her patients with an inexpensive, natural tea for fifty years – free of charge – and had the support of many renowned scientists, respected doctors, and cancer survivors until her death in 1978. A mixture originally used by the Canadian Ojibwa tribe, was recreated by Nurse Caisse and administered to her patients starting in the 1920s. Patients who were told there was no hope by their doctors were able to beat their cancer. Despite attacks to her reputation, legal trouble for her treating patients without a license, and being dragged into court countless times, Nurse Caisse never stopped helping her patients. The fact she wasn’t charging for her tea is probably the only thing that kept her out of jail.

In 1939, she received more than 55,000 signatures on a petition to allow her to continue giving her tea to patients who were told nothing could be done to treat their disease. Thousands of people swear by the results they got from this natural tea. Meanwhile there were many doctors who called it nothing more than the “placebo effect” in action. When people survive what is considered unsurvivable cancer… we need more of what helped them do that.

More specifically, a plant-based diet that is low in animal proteins and processed foods and instead is focused around fresh organic fruits and veggies and alkalinizing plant proteins like nuts, seeds and legumes. It is truly an empowering concept: that we hold the key to living a long, cancer-free life and all we have to do is enjoy delicious, wholesome foods every day! Ready to start your prevention diet? Here are some of my favourite cancer-fighting superfoods:

1. Broccoli

The age old advice from mothers everywhere to “eat your broccoli” is even more valuable when it comes to cancer prevention. While all cruciferous veggies (think cauliflower, cabbage and kale) contain cancer-fighting properties (and a host of other amazing nutritional benefits), broccoli is the only one with a sizable amount of sulforaphane, a particularly potent compound that boosts the body's

protective enzymes and flushes out cancer-causing chemicals. How much is needed to reap the benefits? My advice is the more broccoli, the better! Add it wherever you can, from salads to omelets to the top of your pizza.

2. Berries

Nature’s version of candy (or is that raisins?), these sweet treats are hard to beat. And not just on taste! All berries are packed with cancerfighting phytonutrients, but black raspberries in particular contain very high concentrations of phytochemicals called anthocyanins, which have been shown to slow down the growth of premalignant cells and keep new blood vessels from forming (and potentially feeding a cancerous tumor). And it only takes adding just a half-cup serving of berries a day to help you fight the big C (although of course I recommend more!). Toss some in your Greek yogurt, morning oats, or simply enjoy on their own as a delicious dessert.

3. Tomatoes

These red, juicy fruits (yes – fruit!) are the best dietary source of lycopene, a carotenoid that gives

tomatoes their red hue. Why is this important in cancer prevention? Because lycopene has been found to stop the growth of certain cancer cells in recent studies. The biggest benefits come from cooked tomatoes (think pasta sauce or warm tomato soup), since the heating process increases the amount of lycopene your body is able to absorb. Finally – an excuse to eat spaghetti! Just stay away from processed white pasta and instead opt for whole grain or brown rice varieties.

4. Papaya

Like tomatoes, papayas also contain the cancer fighting compound, lycopene. But papaya has another cancer fighter, the cartenoid beta-cyrptoxanthin. Carotenoids fight free radicals, helping protect cells and membranes against damage and disease. And ladies, listen up: studies have shown that eating one or more papayas a week can lower your cervical cancer risk. I guess they are called the “fruit of the angels” for a reason!

5. Garlic

I know, I know – I put garlic on pretty much all my superfood lists.

This is because it contains antioxidants called catechins, which may help prevent cancer in a variety of ways, including keeping free radicals from damaging cells. Furthermore, lab studies have also found evidence that catechins in tea can shrink tumors and reduce tumor cell growth. Both green and black teas contain catechins, but you’ll get more antioxidants from green tea, so add a cup or more per day in your anti-cancer diet.

On top of a nutrient dense, plant-based diet, there are many simple lifestyle changes you can make to greatly decrease your chances of getting cancer. Here are some of my favourites:

Meditation

We’re often told that being happy, meditating and mindfulness can benefit our health. Now researchers in Canada have found the first evidence to suggest that support groups that encourage meditation and yoga can actually alter the cellular activity of cancer survivors. It is also amazingly effective for managing stress, which has long been connected with poor health and disease, thus making it a great tool for cancer prevention. Commit to just 15 minutes a day and you’ll reap the rewards.

Sunlight Therapy

There is scientific evidence you can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels (which is crucial to proper immune function) with appropriate sun exposure. And when real sunlight isn’t abundantly available (like for those of us who live up here in the Northern hemisphere!), sunlight therapy can be a great alternative. It has been shown effective in treating many mood disorders such as SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and now studies have linked it to cancer prevention as well.

The bottom line: you can give yourself a real fighting chance against cancer with a few smart food and lifestyle choices. Simply combine a whole, mostly organic plant-based diet with some positive vibes, sunshine, plenty of restorative sleep, and proper stress management, and you’re on the right path to a long, happy cancer-free life!t

1) 1. Make red curry peanut dressing. Combine coconut milk, soy sauce, sugar, peanut butter, ginger, and red curry paste in a blender. Blend on high speed until smooth. Set aside. 2) Assemble the bowls Divide spiralized zucchini evenly among four serving bowls and top each with 2 tbsp (30 mL) of dressing. 3) Top each with equal amounts of the following: red pepper, cucumber, grape tomatoes, bean sprouts, micro arugula, and grilled tofu steaks. “High raw” is a new concept in the world of raw food, meaning almost all raw or as raw as possible. I think it’s a great development, since eating all raw all the time is difficult, and this makes it easier to embrace the parts of raw food that I love—tons of raw veggies and highly flavoured sauces. If you don’t have a turning slicer (Spiralizer) to make the spiralized zucchini, either use a julienne peeler, a regular peeler, or a knife to cut long, thin strips. Serves 4.

Red Curry Peanut Dressing

1 cup coconut milk ¼ cup gluten-free soy sauce or tamari 3 tbsp coconut sugar or sweetener of your choice ¼ cup natural peanut butter 1 tbsp peeled and minced fresh ginger 1 tsp red curry paste (we prefer Thai Kitchen)

They go well on everything: salads, bowls, tacos, wraps, sandwiches… At the restaurants we grill them, but at home you can either cook them under the broiler, on a panini grill, on a barbecue, or in a frying pan with some oil. Makes 16 tofu steaks.

Ingredients

½ cup tamari 2 cups water 2 tbsp ground coriander 4 tsp garlic powder 1 block extra firm tofu

Directions

1) Combine tamari, water, coriander, and garlic powder in a bowl. 2) Cut block of tofu in half lengthwise, then cut each half into four slices, and then cut those slices on the diagonal to form 8 triangular steaks. Add to marinade. 3) Cover and set aside for at least an hour, or overnight, to marinate (refrigerate if overnight). 4) To cook, either grill or pan-fry with 1 to 2 tbsp (15 to 30 mL) of oil over medium-high heat until browned on both sides.t

Omega-3s, From the Sea to Your Smoothie

Is your smoothie missing something? Chances are your morning meal could use a healthy addition of omega-3s. Cod liver oil contains four key nutrients for health. Cod liver oil has been taken as an elixir for general wellness since the mid1800s. But the cod liver oil that our grandparents gulped is not what is sold today. Today’s stringent processing and purifying techniques equate to a finished product that tastes delicious and is highly nutritious.

So what makes cod liver oil so health supportive? Most notably, it’s a concentrated food containing several essential nutrients to human health. These include DHA, EPA, vitamin A and vitamin D. An added value is that because cod liver oil is a fat, the fat soluble nutrients, namely vitamin A and D, are better utilized and absorbed by the body than when taken without a fat. This synergistic combination of nutrients is exactly what mother nature intended.

DHA and EPA are the two most recognized and studied constituents of omega-3s. Omega-3s are considered essential because your body needs to obtain them through diet or supplementation. Omega-3s are building blocks for cell membranes in the body, and key components of the brain, eyes, and heart. Omega-3 fatty acids support: cardiovascular health, brain and nerve

health, vision health, immune system health, joint health and skin health. Both DHA and EPA are present in nearly equal amounts in liquid cod liver oil. Our bodies rely on each of them; however, they offer unique benefits.

EPA supports healthy cardiovascular and immune systems, a balanced inflammatory response, and joint health, and is shown to be effective in lowering elevated triglycerides. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends 2 to 4 grams of EPA and DHA for elevated triglycerides. Recent studies also link EPA to emotional health, including depression and other mood related disorders.

Vitamin D is involved in many bodily processes. It is essential in bone health with it’s role in assisting in calcium metabolism. Higher concentrations of vitamin D in the blood are associated with strong bones and good health. Vitamin D is involved in supporting a healthy immune system. It activates antimicrobial peptides which work at fighting off a wide range of infections.

DHA is found primarily in the retina of the eye and in the brain. It supports brain, nervous system, and vision health. The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) recommends that pregnant and lactating women get at least 200 mg of DHA per day. This supports the child’s developing brain and nervous system.

Vitamin A is necessary for proper vision, healthy skin, strong bones, and a resilient immune system. When the body is deficient in vitamin A, the eyes begin to

Sustainable Gardening

in Small Spaces

Food for birds, pollinators … and yourself. Gardening in small spaces can be a challenge. Every inch of space counts and there are limits to the types of plants you can use. However, with the right plant choices even the smallest yard or patio can turn into a mini oasis that may even yield tasty edibles for you and your family. But let’s not forget the birds, butterflies and other pollinators that share our yards and are important for the environment. Adding native plants, those that evolved locally before European settlement, can attract birds and butterflies to your yard, resulting in a truly sustainable garden that benefits us as well as local wildlife.

BLACK-EYED SUSANS

We asked the folks at Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) about sustainable gardening in small spaces. CVC is a community-based environmental agency committed to showing residents how to garden more sustainably by selecting the right native plants for their yards. Since local wildlife evolved along with native plants over millennia, they have come to depend on each other to survive. With CVC’s help, we’ve pulled together a list of native plants perfect for small gardens.

The edible flowers and leaves of wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) make an excellent tea, reminiscent of bergamot (the flavour in Earl Grey tea).

WILD BERGAMOT Wildflowers

Not all small yards have room for shrubs. Wildflowers have a smaller footprint and some native varieties have edible properties.

This tall, mauve flower looks great in a sunny location at the back of a garden, but can spread easily. Keep it tame in a small garden by removing unwanted plants as they appear and dividing a growing clump in spring if it has started to spread. Pair it with milkweed, which provides sustenance for beautiful monarch butterflies.

For the smallest yards, include some native violets in your garden or in a container in front of a window. Common blue violet (Viola sororia) and yellow violet (Viola pubescens) add early spring colour and return each year to surprise and delight.

If you can bear to remove a few of these beauties from the garden, impress guests by throwing some raw flowers and leaves into a salad, or release your inner pastry chef and candy a few to adorn a cake.

Tiny wild strawberries are among of the most delicious late spring delicacies. They can be used as a groundcover, even in small areas. Combine with other groundcovers or low growing flowers such as nodding wild onion, blue-eyed grass or butterfly milkweed. The early spring flowers attract butterflies.

Blue vervain and black-eyed Susans do not provide food for humans, but goldfinches, cardinals and sparrows will all visit your yard to eat the seeds of their beautiful flowers. They add colour to a patio or balcony and can be grown in containers.

Shrubs

Smooth rose (Rosa blanda) and Carolina rose (Rosa carolina) shrubs feature striking pink roses through June and July, perfect for a sunny border along a fence or driveway. The rosehips can be used to make a tea that is high in vitamin C, or left to feed birds such as cedar waxwings. Both varieties send out suckers that you can clip back to control growth.

Raspberry – Who knew the beloved raspberry is a native plant? There are many cultivars out there, but the native plant Rubus idaeus is widely available at native plant nurseries. Birds such as indigo bunting, white-throated sparrow and brown thrasher, love to eat raspberries. Purple flowering raspberry (Rubus odoratus) has larger, attractive flowers and still produces abundant fruit for the birds, although less palatable for human tastes. For early spring blooms, serviceberry shrubs reveal an array of delicate white flowers just before their leaves emerge. There are several serviceberry shrubs that produce delicious berries, also known as Saskatoon berries or June berries. Locally native smooth

Vegetable Garden Helpers

serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) will grow in most soils and has some of the best tasting berries. Serviceberry also supports a large variety of birds such as cedar waxwings, thrushes (including American robins), catbirds and Baltimore orioles. The delicate white flowers provide nectar and pollen for early spring pollinators such as bumblebees. Meadowsweet is a small flowering shrub perfect for moist locations. Its cone-shaped clusters of white flowers often last from June into early August, leaving behind attractive seed-heads that provide food for American goldfinches, black-capped chickadees and sparrows. Meadowsweet is host for the shimmery blue Spring azure butterfly. Historically, a tea tasting similar to green tea was made from the leaves. The beautiful New Jersey tea shrub works in sandier soils and provides nectar for pollinators. The leaves of are said to make a refreshing tea. Butterflies such as spring and summer azures commonly visit this shrub and hummingbirds are attracted to the abundant white clusters of flowers. At a maximum height of one meter, New Jersey tea is an excellent choice for a small garden.t

To help pollinate a small vegetable garden or other plants in your yard, these native plants are known to attract bumblebees, butterflies and other pollinators to your yard. This can help increase yields of many of your favourite crops. To ensure you always have one or two plants in bloom, select at least two plants from each seasonal category. Plant several species in clumps or swaths to make them easier for pollinators to find.

Early Season: wild geranium, wild strawberry, wild columbine, false solomon’s-seal, wild lupine Mid-season: milkweed, lance-leaved coreopsis, wild bergamot, purple coneflower, culver’s root, New Jersey tea (shrub)

Late Season: boneset, asters, dense blazing-star, shrubby cinquefoil (shrub)

Herbs Pollinators Love

Planting herbs such as mint, lavender, chives and parsley will also attract pollinators. These can be planted in your garden, or in planters to take up less space or keep aggressive plants, such as mint, under control. For a dash of colour, combine with something like the native violas and keep them on the edge of your deck, or even on your front porch.

Aloe Vera

Aloe is one of the oldest known medicinal plants, prized for both external and internal use for a wide variety of health issues. Amongst other things, aloe is a natural joint healer, chock-full of antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant components. Plus, it contains plant steroids and salicylic acid (closely related to aspirin) that help to decrease inflammation. Aloe can be consumed or applied topically to swollen, painful joints. Aloe is a warm climate plant, so it can be grown outdoors during the warmer months, but move it indoors once the temperature starts to drop.

Dandelion

For all you gardeners out there, maybe it’s time to take a new look at the dandelion. Believe it or not, these pesky weeds can actually soothe arthritis pain. What’s more, this herb is packed with the vitamins A, B, C, and D, as well as iron, potassium, and zinc. Dandelion greens can be used in salads, teas, and even smoothies. If you’re looking to reduce pain and inflammation, add oregano to your list of garden herbs this spring. A versatile spice, oregano comes in a wide variety of species.

Parsley

Parsley, a popular addition in many dishes, should be far more than a garnish. This little herb packs a powerful punch of vitamins C and K. The attraction of nutrition bars as a quick and convenient way to provide your body with good sources of protein, carbs and other macronutrients has made this one of the fastest growing categories in the food industry. In fact, 2013 reported sales were 2.2 billion dollars and analysts expect it to steadily increase right through to 2018.

Much of the growth can be attributed to active individuals of all ages looking for a convenient source of protein to tide them over between workouts and meals. This increase in demand has flooded the market with literally thousands of nutrition bars. The abundance of options is a good thing as everyone’s criteria for the ideal protein bar varies drastically from one individual to the next. For example, there are high protein low carb bars, high protein moderate carb bars, meal replacement bars, workout / energy bars and these are just a few of the categories available. To complicate matters even further you can refine your search criteria within these categories to find bars that are all-natural, organic, glutenfree or vegan. The list is extensive.

However, what if you or a family member has a nut allergy? Or, what if your child’s school or your workplace has policies in place restricting nuts due to individuals that are anaphylactic? With thousands of bars available on the market a simple internet search for “nut free high protein bars” surely will provide several options to choose from? If you have tried this before, then you were most likely as surprised as I was with the results. There is a huge void for nut free, high protein low carb bars and even high protein moderate carb bars.

There are options available that are moderate protein and high in carbs, but for those trying to avoid carbs or trying to keep their blood sugar balanced throughout the day, these options are not desirable.

Luckily, a new protein bar is available in Canada that is not only nut free and high in protein, but also, all natural, gluten free, and high in fibre. Best of all, the main carbohydrate source is glutenfree rolled oats, a complex carb that is great for helping replenish glycogen levels, is a high source of fibre and is considered heart healthy as well.

When first reading the packaging, I thought the bar was just called Protein Bar. I thought, it’s kind of boring, but it works and it’s to the point. Then after reading it again, I saw the bar was actually called, PrOATein Bar, with “OAT” in capital letters. Very clever I thought as it pretty much sums up the bar’s two main and most important ingredients, protein and oats. However, I wasn’t sold on the bar yet as many high protein bars use sugar alcohols or sweeteners to make them taste better and also use sources of fibre that have come under scrutiny from several nutrition experts in the industry. After thoroughly reviewing the ingredients I concluded the bar is actually better than I expected. Is Your Oregano Oil GMO-Tainted? By Cass Ingram In the late 1990s this author was contacted by powerful people in the research community. Their request or,

rather, demand was simple, ‘Help us market our new scientific creation. It's genetically engineered oregano oil. We figured out how to force the plant to do what it won't do in nature – make extraordinarily high amounts of the primary active ingredient: carvacrol. They continued, essentially, we know you're the oregano guru. Help us market this novel oregano oil.”

Here is what we are doing, this scientist continued, “The oregano is grown in a hothouse. Then, the stalks of the plant are injected with a GMO version of the bacteria, Pseudomonas aureugenosa. This stresses the plant, forcing it to make massively high levels of carvacrol. It's unbelievable what we have done. We can make a plant that gives 80% or more carvacrol every time it is distilled. Everyone will want this product.”

Of course, this is paraphrased. Yet, in its basics there is nothing about it that isn't true. It was a kind of demand that they made, demonstrating the ultimate in arrogance, that is ‘You need to join us.' There was no joining on this end.

By 2002, GMO-corrupted oregano oil became commonplace as a health food store supplement. Then, people started having reactions, though not aware of the reason. Common symptoms of toxicity from GMO and/or imitation oregano oil supplements include upset stomach, stomach-ache, pain in the liver area, head pain, and migraines. In virtually all cases the use of the true wild oregano oil and/or

the whole crude herb complex with Rhus coriaria purges such symptoms. GMOtainted oregano oil is being sold routinely, and the major outlets include health food stores, private label brands, and the Internet. Wild oregano oil has a specific chemical profile. That profile is absolutely reproducible within small limits. Any deviation from it, particularly any great deviation, is proof of fraud. Or, it may be proof of an imitation brand made from a non-oregano species.

Three Ways Oregano Oil can be Corrupted:

• It is distilled from a non-oregano species, like marjoram or Spanish thyme, and, therefore, has the wrong chemical profile. • It is distilled from either the correct species or the wrong one and is then spiked with false carvacrol.

• It is distilled from GMO-corrupted oregano or marjoram, the most readily identifiable corruption of all.

In addition, there is the issue of thymol. This substance cannot be consumed in large quantities, as it has toxicity to the liver as well as the heart. In tiny amounts thymol is a synergist, such as less than 1.2%. If it is too high, that is above 4%, the oregano oil should not be consumed internally, at least not on a regular basis.

Regarding GMOs, the entire premise is false. In nature there is a balance of active ingredients which all work together in a synergy. Some scientists haughtily believe

they can alter this balance for the better based on some mere presumptions. With oregano the presumption is the higher the carvacrol the better. This is simply not the case. Wild oregano oil contains up to 30 active ingredients, and all such ingredients have novel functions. Such alterations and manipulations are never the case with the wild oregano oil produced by North American Herb & Spice. It is always natural, always 100% wild, and always safe for human consumption. Importantly, it is also the only kind of wild oregano oil which is recommended for daily consumption and can be, if necessary, consumed with impunity, that is consumed in large amounts.

Garcinia cambogia is a tropical species of garcinia native to Southeast Asia, coastal Karnataka, India, and west/central Africa. People call this “brindall berry” and “Malabar tamarind” as well. It is characterized by a fruit that looks like pumpkin, but orange to grapefruit in size. Its white flesh, with a sweet and sour flavour has a texture and taste similar to that of persimmon. Garcinia cambogia has many food and medicinal uses. Perhaps the most common usage of garcinia cambogia is in the preparation of curries. When cooking sour curry or fish curry, garcinia cambogia is an essential ingredient. In Kerala Indian cuisine where fish is an integral part of the meal, garcinia cambogia, called koampuli, serves many purposes. Fish is cured in kodampuli for at least 24 hours before cooking to maximize the taste. Nadan Meen Curry, the traditional fish curry, almost always uses kodampuli to bring out the flavour of fish.

The Health Benefits of Garcinia Cambogia

Indian traditional medicine has used various species of garcinia plant for many conditions. Garcinia cambogia fruit has been used as a digestive aid. Garcinol, a less commonly known component of garcinia cambogia helps body fight inflammation and infection. Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a key component of garcinia cambogia. Crazy for Cranberry By Renita Rietz

Just the mere mention of the word cranberry can create an instantaneous flow of juices in the mouth as one thinks of the unmistakably tart taste of this powerful red berry. We may conjure up images of cranberry sauce, a staple at every Thanksgiving dinner or think of the ever-popular unsweetened cranberry juice. Whatever our initial association is, we all know that this super berry is incredibly healthy for us.

Cranberries have long been revered in the diet and in traditional medicinal preparations, particularly in the Native American tradition. Although they have an incredibly sour taste, they can be easily added to recipes with a touch of natural sweetener to soften the astringent nature of this fruit. Fresh or frozen, they can be used to make smoothies, sauces and jams. They are a lovely addition to oatmeal, baked goods and even salads. From a nutritional standpoint, whole cranberries contain vitamin C, fiber, phospholipids and omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, as well as an abundance of antioxidants. One antioxidant in particular that has gained significant attention are PACs or proanthocyanidins. This polyphenol is really the star compound in

cranberry associated with anti-bacterial activity. Cranberries have been used for centuries for the maintenance of optimal urinary tract health. Not only has research shown that PACs or proanthocyanidins may prevent pathogens from adhering to the uroepithelial tissue of the urethra and bladder, but research has shown that PACs may decrease adhesion of uropathogenic bacteria at the level of the gut, increase their clearance from the body and thereby contribute to the subsequent prevention and reduction of acquiring a urinary tract infection.

Proanthocyanidins in cranberry have been shown to reduce inflammation of the gums, bleeding of the gums and inhibit plaque formation, thereby contributing to optimal oral health. Cranberries also contain numerous other antioxidant polyphenols such as anthocyanins, flavonols and hydroxycinnamic acids, which act as free radical scavengers, thereby reducing the level of oxidative stress in the body, which is associated with accelerated aging. Not all cranberry products are created equal. Cranberry powders are sometimes blended with other polyphenol rich products such as grape seed extract. There are often vast differences in quality, processing and potency. Many products do

Breast thermography can be used with all types of breasts and breast conditions, and it has been approved by FDA since 1982. It is an adjunctive test; it’s not a stand-alone diagnostic test. We all have microscopic tumors in our bodies. However, this is not something that is life-threatening. Only when these tumors connect to a blood vessel do they become dangerous. In order for a tumour to grow and multiply it needs nutrients, that become available by connecting with a blood supply source. This is called angiogenesis. If angiogenesis is the tipping point between harmless and harmful, my question is, wouldn’t it make sense to know at the earliest possible time if you are at risk?

This is where breast thermography plays a vital role by detecting asymmetrical blood supply in the breast tissue. These suspicious findings can be investigated further with other imaging tests or followed up with thermal imaging over a longer period of time to determine stability or progression of suspicious development. By the time something is detected with mammography it usually has been developing for close to a decade. Thermography, in contrast, provides information about what is happening now and what is about to occur that may lead to potentially dangerous changes. One of the repercussions of mainstream farming practices is the profound depletion of the soil’s vital nutrients due to the over use of the land as well as the aggressive utilization of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
