conventional use of idioms is well-known in the literature (Kovačević and Mihaljević 2004; Naciscione 2010). It has also been shown that expressions created by non-conventional use reflect conventional conceptual mappings (Cacciari and Glucksberg 1991; Glucksberg 1993; Omazić 2008). This proves that the non-conventional use of idioms is not only a linguistic, but also a conceptual phenomenon (e.g. the idiom gurnuti u vatru koga ‘be thrown in at the deep end’ reflects the force-dynamic schema). The aim of this paper is to examine creative modifications of Croatian idioms using electronic corpora, in order to show that there are universal mechanisms underlying such changes. More specifically, we will show that an idiom has a schematic, fixed element (the core) which reflects conceptual mappings and remains stable in its non-conventional use, thus ensuring the expression’s recoverability. The study was performed on 230 idioms in the Croatian National Corpus and a total of 1473 creative modifications were found. The results show that lexical changes (e.g. substitution and addition) are more frequent (83%), while structural changes (e.g. word order, adjective comparison, etc.) occur in 10% of the cases. This indicates that the structural element has a direct connection to the core of the idiom (because of its schematicity; Langacker 1987). Isti se jezik različito govori, djelomice i različito piše, ovisnosno o govorniku i sugovorniku, komunikacijskoj situaciji, vremenu i mjestu u kojemu se ostvaruje. Posljedica je neminovno jezično raslojavanje koje se ogleda u varijetetima, jezičnim posebnostima više ili manje različitima od standardnojezične norme. Od četiri temeljna jezična varijeteta (društveno, vremensko, prostorno i funkcionalno raslojavanje), u radu je ponajprije riječ o vertikalnome dijastratičkom raslojavanju (socijalna dimenzija) i horizontalnome dijatopijskom raslojavanju (prostorna dimenzija) u leksiku hrvatskih osnovnoškolaca.
