School Year Highlights

Henderson County Public Schools The Henderson County Public School District is the 27th largest school district in North Carolina and the second in Western North Carolina, comprised of 13 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 4 high schools, 1 early college and 1 education center.

School District has 12th Highest SAT Score of the 115 LEAs in North Carolina The Henderson County Public School District had the 12th highest SAT score of the 115 Local Education Agencies in the state of North Carolina in 2015. According to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction’s annual SAT report, 43.8% (or 374) of HCPS high school seniors took the SAT in 2015, scoring an average of 1028 (when the Critical Reading and Mathematics scores are combined) and a 1524 Grand Total score (when the Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing scores are combined). Fifty-nine percent (or 58,022) of North Carolina high school seniors took the SAT college admissions exam in 2015, and scored an average of 1002 and a 1478 Grand Total score. Our district’s Grand Total score was 34 points above the nation’s Grand Total score of 1490 and 46 points above North Carolina’s Grand Total score.

14th Highest Graduation Rate in State The North Carolina Four-Year Cohort Graduation Rate reflects the percentage of ninth graders (their cohort) who graduated from high school four years later. In 2014-15, Henderson County Public Schools had a graduation rate of 90.5%, compared to the state average of 85.4%. With the 14th highest graduation rate in the state, the school district maintained its 8-year trend of exceeding the state graduation rate. The HCPS 2014-15 rate was also the highest graduation rate for school districts with 1,000-1,999 in the graduating cohort across the state of North Carolina.

District & School Achievements Graduation Rates Recognized by State Superintendent Henderson County Early College and West Henderson High were recognized for their high graduation rates in 2014-15 by State Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson in October 2015. The Early College achieved a 100% graduation rate last year, and West Henderson High was one of two schools with the highest graduation rates with cohorts of students in the 200-299 range. National Beta Club “School of Merit” Designation Hendersonville Middle was designated a “School of Merit” by the National Beta Club, recognizing the school’s dedication and commitment to academic excellence and involvement of all eligible grade levels in the Hendersonville Middle Beta Club – sponsored by teachers Jill Jackson, Lisa Rogers, and Melinda May. Westwind Yearbook wins Pacemaker Award West Henderson High’s 2015 Westwind yearbook, “This Is What We Do,” won the Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press association in April 2016, making it the second yearbook in the school’s history to win top honors from the NSPA, North Carolina Scholastic Media Association, National High School Journalism Convention, Southern Interscholastic Press Association, and Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

16th Lowest Dropout Rate in North Carolina For the eighth year in a row, Henderson County Public Schools’ dropout rate in 2014-15 remained below the state average and is approaching a zero percent dropout rate. At 1.37%, our dropout rate was 1.02 percentage points below the state rate of 2.39%. Since 2007-08, when HCPS had a dropout rate of 3.04% (compared to the state rate of 4.97%), the local rate has decreased by 1.67 percentage points.


Early College Redesignated as NC New Schools “School of Innovation and Excellence” Henderson County Early College was among 16 North Carolina high schools recognized as a School of Innovation & Excellence by NC New Schools/ Breakthrough Learning, identifying it for the second year in a row as a leader in academic excellence and innovative practices. 2016 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year Regional Winner Peggy Marshall, Principal of Sugarloaf Elementary, was named one of eight regional winners in the Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year competition, winning $1,000 for her school and another $1,000 for personal use. Before becoming a regional winner, Marshall was chosen to represent the district as Principal of the Year for HCPS. She was selected by her peers because of her commitment and dedication to the students and leadership in service of Sugarloaf Elementary. Principal at Sugarloaf Elementary since 2013, Marshall has been with HCPS since 1992 and spent 16

years at Dana Elementary as a teacher and instructional coach before serving as Lead Teacher at Hillandale Elementary and Assistant Principal at Rugby Middle. 2016 Henderson County Public Schools Teacher of the Year Elena Barnwell, first grade teacher at Hendersonville Elementary, was nominated by her peers to represent her school as teacher of the year. She was then selected from the 23 individual school Teachers of the Year for the designation as Henderson County Public Schools’ 2016 Teacher of the Year. Barnwell has served HCPS for 24 years as a teacher at Hendersonville and Glenn C. Marlow elementary schools.

Bruce Drysdale, Clear Creek, Hendersonville, Hillandale, and Mills River Elementary Schools Earn PBIS Recognition Bruce Drysdale, Clear Creek, Hendersonville and Hillandale elementary schools earned the designations of Exemplar Schools in the North Carolina Positive Behavior & Support (PBIS) Initiative Annual Recognition. Additionally, Mills River Elementary earned designation as a Model School. The schools met all the requirements for these designations and demonstrated the results that the schools and PBIS school teams achieved by working together, using school data to implement research-based practices and developing supportive systems to teach all students new behaviors.

Order of the Long Leaf Pine & Congressional Record Recipient Retired (June 2016) Superintendent David L. Jones was honored for his 38 years of service to Henderson County Public Schools with the North Carolina governor’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and a Congressional Record read by Rep. Mark Meadows in the House of Representatives. North Carolina Rep. Chris Whitmire nominated Jones for the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest honors granted by the governor of North Carolina, bestowed upon individuals who have displayed exemplary service to their North Carolina communities and to the state as a whole. Whitmire nominated Jones for his dedication to public education and the preparation of youth for leadership. United States Congressman Mark Meadows also honored Jones’ service to HCPS as a teacher, coach, principal and central office administrator with the official statement he read in the House of Representatives during the second session of the 114th Congress, forever commemorating Jones and listing his accolades in the Congressional Record.

2015 NASSP State Principal of the Year East Henderson High’s former Principal Scott Rhodes was named 2015 Principal of the Year for the State of North Carolina by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The designation follows Rhodes being named 2015 HCPS Principal of the Year and representing Western North Carolina as the 2015 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year Regional Winner. Oxford University’s Choral Institute Conductor Selection East Henderson High School’s Choral Director, Anna Marie Kuether, was accepted into Oxford University’s summer Choral Institute as a “Full Conductor,” a designation meaning that Kuether not only attended, but directed the Institute’s chorus.

NCBA “Award of Excellence” Winner North Henderson High’s Band Director Stephen Sigmon received the “Award of Excellence” from the North Carolina Bandmasters Association, a division of the North Carolina Music Educators Association. Since 2008, under Sigmon’s direction, North Henderson’s bands have received only Superior ratings at the State Concert Festival (MPA), enrollment in the band has grown from six to 115 members, and the Concert, Marching, and Jazz bands have won National 2016 AFJROTC Outstanding Instructor of the Year and Regional competitions. N.J. 2016 Papa John’s Teacher of the Year Michelle Mays, 2nd grade teacher at Edneyville Elementary, won one of three 2016 Papa John’s Teacher of the Year Awards, after being nominated by student Danna Godoy. Mays was the only winner in Henderson County.

N.C. School Public Relations Association 2015 “Blue Ribbon Awards” Winner Molly McGowan Gorsuch, HCPS public information officer, earned three Blue Ribbon Awards from the N.C. School Public Relations Association for public relations work in 2015. She won a gold in the “Digital Media Engagement” category for last year’s #HCPSsnow Twitter campaign, a silver in the “Publications” category for the HCPS Life newsmagazine created last year, and a silver in the “Excellence in Writing” category for her story on East Henderson High students tracing a Holocaust-era letter to living relatives in Florida.

Highest Microsoft Imagine Academy Pass Rate in State For the second year in a row, Hendersonville Middle’s technology teacher Larry Wagner’s 8th grade class had North Carolina’s highest pass rate (93% this year) for the Microsoft Imagine Academy in middle schools.

N.C. State University Park Scholarship Winner Kathryn Rose Speese of Hendersonville High was a recipient of the four-year Park Scholarship at N.C. State University, which is valued at $98,000 in in-state tuition, and includes a computer stipend, grants for research projects and conferences, and a mentorship program.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Scholarship Winners Jose Robles and Liliana Rangel-Parra were selected for the Gates Millenium Scholars Program 2016, and received the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Scholarship, which supports the cost of education by covering tuition that is unmet by other scholarships or aid.

“Platinum” Score on ACT WorkKeys Exam Spencer Dudas of North Henderson High earned an ACT WorkKeys Exam score in the Platinum range, the highest level in the skills assessment’s scoring. The Platinum level requires a minimum score of 6 (on a scale of 1-7) on each of the core areas: Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for Information. N.C. Poet Laureate Writing Contest Winner Louise Cummins of Hendersonville High won 1st Place in the grades 6-8 division of the N.C. Poet Laureate Writing Contest (while in middle school the previous school year). The contest is sponsored by the N.C. English Teachers Association and winners were recognized by N.C. Poet Laureate Shelby Stephenson.

Boys & Girls Club 2016 North Carolina Youth of the Year Winner Sarah Parker of North Henderson High was named the 2016 North Carolina Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for her academic excellence, leadership, and service. She will receive scholarships totaling $10,000 from BGCA and the North Carolina Area Council of Boys & Girls Clubs, and serve as a community leader and teen ambassador.

Carl Sandburg Poetry Contest Winners Three Henderson County Public Schools students were invited to present their winning poems at the public reception for the 2016 Carl Sandburg Poetry Contest in April 2016. In the 6th-8th Grade Division, Aaron Owens of Flat Rock Middle won the Peoples Choice Award for “Bear Hunt,” and Journee McMinn of Hendersonville Middle earned Honorable Mention for “Living Up to the Legacy.” Hendersonville High’s Erin Justice won the People’s Choice award for “The Locket” in the 9th-12th Grade Division.

N.C. Science Olympiad Regional Winners Flat Rock Middle, Rugby Middle, East Henderson High, Early College High, and West Henderson High sent teams to compete in Divisions B and C of the N.C. Science Olympiad Asheville Regional at UNC-Asheville in February 2016. Among other awards, teams from Flat Rock Middle, East Henderson High, Henderson County Early College, and West Henderson High earned 1st Place Overall in various experiments, advancing them to the state championships. 16th Annual Kiwanis Spelling Bee Champions In April 2016, Fletcher Elementary sent a team of 5thClear Creek Elementary’s spelling bee team of 5thgraders to compete in the Division A regional olympiad, graders and one 4th-grader won the 16th Annual Kiwanis earning three 1st- and two 2nd-place awards. North Carolina DECA State Competition Winners East Henderson High’s Annabelle Cram won 1st Place in the “Principles of Business” category and Mackenzie Hill won 1st Place in the “Marketing Management” category at the North Carolina DECA State Career Development Conference in Greensboro. Western Carolina University’s Foreign Language Contest Winners Janeissa Romero, Janet Contreras, Alexla Perez, and Ariana Sosa of Henderson County Early College took 1st Place in the Native Speakers Quiz Bowl at WCU’s 34th annual Foreign Language Contest for high school students. Early College students Hanna Blankenship, Keith Bradley, Ryan Good, and Brianna Rogers took 2nd Place in the Non-Native Speakers Quiz Bowl, and Maria Campuzano, Holly Lane, Alexla Perez, Ariana Sosa, Lisette Bedolla, Ana Manzano, Isaac Turner, Ryan Good, Brianna Rogers, Andrew Wilson, Emilee Garren, Heather McGrann, and McKenzie Brinkley earned 2nd Place in the Dance competition.

Regional MATE ROV Competition Winners Edneyville Elementary’s “BUZZ BOTS” Underwater Robotics Team took 2nd Place in their first tournament, the 2016 Southeast Regional MATE ROV Competition at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary in Savannah, Georgia, where they competed against six other teams.

FIRST Lego League Robotic Competition Winners Hendersonville Elementary’s 4th- and 5th-grade “Hendobots” team competed in the third annual FIRST Lego League Robotic Competition at Blue Ridge Community College in November 2015 and won the Innovative Solution award. Western North Carolina Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Gold & Silver Key Winners From West Henderson High, Michaela Bradly won a Regional Gold Key and Sarah Rhinehart won a Regional Silver Key for Poetry. Nathaniel Kuykendal, Maija Lacey, Megan Palmer, Annalyse Wilkins, Cheyanne Williamson and Parker Young each recieved Honorable N.C. Letters About Literature Contest Winners Cate Boyette of Hendersonville Elementary won 1st Mentions for their poetry collections. Place in the grades 4-6 division of the N.C. NCCTM Western Regional Math Fair Winner Madeline Miller of Hendersonville Elementary won 3rd Place at the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics Western Regional Math Fair held at Appalachian State University in April 2016, and advanced to the 2016 State Mathematics Conference in Greensboro in October. Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award & Scholarship Essay Winners Tameron Hill of Hendersonville High won 1st Place in the Daughters of American Revolutions’ 2016 Good Citizens Award & Scholarship Essay Contest. Cassie Brackett of North Henderson High won 2nd Place, and Celine Skrivanek of Henderson County Early College High won 3rd Place in the contest. 2016 NCHSAA 3A Wrestling State Champion Josh Blatt of North Henderson High won the 2016 North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 3A Wrestling State Championships in the 106-pound weight class. 2016 NCHSAA 2A Discus State Champion Amy Yarborough of Hendersonville High won the 2016 North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 2A Track State Championships in the discus event, and finished state runner-up in shot put. 2016 NCHSAA 1A/2A Pole Vault State Champion Emma Laughter of Hendersonville High won the 2016 North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 1A/2A Indoor Track & Field State Championships in the pole vault event, with a height of 8’0”. NCHSAA “Heart of a Champion” & “A.J ‘Tony’ Simeon Courage” Awards Winner Demetrius Smith of Hendersonville High won both the “Heart of a Champion” award and “A.J. ‘Tony’ Simeon Courage” award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. The “Heart of a Champion” award honors athletes who exemplify oustanding citizenship and sportsmanship, and the “A.J. ‘Tony’ Simeon Courage” award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exemplary character and athletic performance in the face of diversity. NCHSAA Scholar-Athletes Hendersonville High’s women’s cross country team members earned the highest GPA in the sport statewide for the 2015-16 school year and were honored as ScholarAthletes by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association at its 2016 Annual Meeting in Chapel Hill.

NCHSAA Commissioner’s Cup Winners For the second year in a row, North Henderson High’s Lady Knights basketball team was awarded the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Commissioner’s Cup, which recognizes athletic and cheerleading teams for their community service efforts. Winning teams identified needs within their communities, conducted service projects, then submitted one-minute videos explaining how they served. Blue Ridge Conference Track Champions For the second year in a row, the girls’ track team at Rugby Middle won the Blue Ridge Conference Track Championships held at North Henderson High in April 2016. Western Carolina University High School Track & Field Championship Winners The boys’ track and field team at North Henderson High won the 1st Place Team award in the 2016 Western Carolina University High School Track & Field Championship, held at WCU in Cullowhee in April 2016. Times-News Male Athlete of the Year Michael Schmidt of Hendersonville High was named Times-News Male Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row in June 2016. Excelling in basketball, football and baseball, Schmidt finished his senior year by rushing for 1,051 yards and 14 touchdowns, and throwing for 3,312 yards and 31 touchdowns (football); averaged 11.4 points, four rebounds and two steals per game (basketball); and hit .566, hit two homers, scored 15 runs, drove in 24 RBIs, and stole nine bases (baseball). Times-News Female Athlete of the Year Caroline Marsh of North Henderson High was named the 2016 Times-News Female Athlete of the Year in June 2016. Excelling in both basketball and volleyball, Marsh finshed her senior year seasons with 522 kills, 29 aces, 79 solo blocks and a total of 145 blocks in volleyball, and averaged 11.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and two blocks per game in basketball. St. Louis Heritage Festival “Gold Award” Winners The Hendersonville High Combined Band performed in the St. Louis Heritage Festival and was judged by three world-class conductors on the students’ abilities as an ensemble. They earned a Gold Award, the highest rating ensembles can earn, and Mary Olivia Baer was awarded the Ovation Award recognizing her leadership in the school and the band program. North Carolina All-State Honors Band Selections From North Henderson High, Patrick Darnell was selected as 8th chair trombone in the 11th- and 12thgrade 2016 North Carolina All-State Honors Band. Jeremy Farmer and Nathan Duckett were selected as alternates for clarinet and trumpet, respectively.

Western District Bandmasters 2016 All-District Band Selections The following students were accepted into the Western District Bandmasters 2016 All-District Band and performed memorized scales and a solo, and sight-read for a panel of judges – competing against students from all over Western North Carolina. From Apple Valley Middle: Colby Clark, Jake Jenson and Gianna Spada. From Flat Rock Middle: Paulina Lopez, Jolie Bakken, Erika Waldrop, Hunter Sherman, and Mackenzie Savage. From Hendersonville Middle: Chelsea Hermansen, Emily Perry, Mirelle Soss, Noelle Swift, Juliana Hill, Javier Zuniga, Arturo Sanchez, and Devin Horton. From Rugby Middle: Madison Broome, Keegan Owens, Elina Misiyuk, Matthew McGlinsky, and Rachel Stephenson. From East Henderson High: Brett Levi. From Hendersonville High: Michaela Kolarova, Carle Greedy, Carol Kowald, Eve Sainsbury, and Meredith Kraus. North Carolina All-State Chorus Selections Chloe Corpening, Chris Saucedo, Cheyenne McCall, Sean Mahaffey, and Emma Sherer of East Henderson High were selected for the 2016 North Carolina High School All-State Choral Festival in Raleigh held in April 2016. High School Mock Trial Competition Regional Award Winners Two West Henderson High teams competed in the Asheville Regionals of the N.C. Advocates for Justice High School Mock Trial Competition and the team consisting of Ari Sen, Leah Dorn, Alexis Whiteside, Casey Brewer, Benjamin Pruitt, Connor Awald and Hunter Coch advanced to the finals and were the Asheville Region Runners-Up.
