uerer disfrutar de unas vacaciones en Zahara y pretender, además, que estas sean en el mismo pueblo, sólo es posible en el Hotel Doña Lola Zahara, un cuatro estrellas situado en pleno pueblo, en la plazoleta, donde Zahara aún es Zahara. damos encontramos por sus pasillos. Dentro del hotel destacan dos restaurantes, La Casona y La Plazoleta. La Casona, construida a mediados de los años veinte, fue durante muchos años la casa más grande y lujosa de Zahara, de ahí su nombre. Ocupaba, además de la superficie actual del Hotel Doña Lola Zahara, numerosas construcciones adyacentes y, en particular, lo que hoy son las viviendas y apartamentos situados a ambos lados de la calle Thomson y las del lateral contiguo de la calle Prim. Además de sus variadas propuestas que recogen la esencia de la cocina del sur, aquí podrá degustar los exquisitos pescados de la zona y las carnes a la brasa. En las noches de verano, en su espléndida terraza, se puede cenar entre jazmines, al arrullo de los pájaros y envuelto en una aureola de sosiego y relax. En el restaurante La Plazoleta podrá saborear las frituras de pescaito frito típicas del verano gaditano, eso si, si consigue encontrar una mesa libre.

El bello jardín que rodea al hotel, con sus glorietas y su azujeleria sevillana de motivos renacentistas de principios del siglo XX, es el lugar ideal para pasear, tomar una copa o estar tumbado en las hamacas y disfrutar de las piscinas, configurando estas un singular espacio destinado al relax y al confort. El jacuzzi exterior, con una temperatura media de 32º, nos permite disfrutar del masaje del agua y del aire. Las habitaciones, por lo general muy amplias, han sido equipadas con todas las comodidades, destacando las dobles superior, que cuentan con salón, terraza con hamacas y jacuzzi. El establecimiento dispone también de apartamentos de dos y tres dormitorios y habitaciones familiares, dotadas de salón y espléndidas terrazas con vistas al mar o a la montaña. In addition to the current surface area of Hotel Doña Lola Zahara, it also occupied numerous adjacent buildings and, in particular, the houses and apartments located on both sides of Calle Thomson and the adjoining side of Calle Prim. In addition to its varied ideas that constitute the essence of southern Spanish cuisine, this restaurant also offers exquisite local fish and grilled meat dishes. On summer nights, customers can dine on its magnificent terrace amid jasmine plants and the cooing of birds, enveloped in an aura of peace and relaxation. At the La Plazoleta restaurant you can sample the pescaito frito, or fried whitebait, typical of the Cadiz summer; that is, if you can find a free table. The beautiful garden that surrounds the hotel, with its arbours and Seville tiling in early 20th Century renaissance motifs, is the ideal place for strolling, having a drink or lying in one of its hammocks and enjoying the pool in a unique space designed for comfort

and relaxation. The outdoor jacuzzi, with an average temperature of 32 ºC, means you can enjoy a massage of water and air. The bedrooms are generally very spacious and have been equipped with all mod cons. The superior doubles have a lounge area, balcony with hammocks and jacuzzi. levar más de diez años editando publicaciones de calidad no nos exime de seguir ilusionándonos como el primer día. Con la llegada del buen tiempo, cada temporada desde Grupo HCP nos ponemos manos a la obra para, página a página, dar forma a La Revista de Zahara. Este año, además, unimos nuestro trabajo al del gran fotógrafo Carlos Yebra para, juntos, conseguir crear un gran producto. Carlos Yebra es conocido por todos por su carrera profesional. Desde hace unos años, además, forma parte del pueblo de Zahara, donde vive y deja brotar su arte. Sus instantáneas ilustran, así, una revista que llega a sus manos cargada de magia para hacerles recorrer los rincones de una tierra en la que este fotógrafo ha encontrado su sitio. Bajo el guión de Yebra, la revista les ofrece un surtido grupo

de reportajes. De esta forma, a través de sus páginas, les invitamos a sumergirse en Zahara, a conocer sus costumbres más arraigadas, como la almadraba o la atarraya; a descubrir sus lugares más destacados, como el Palacio de Zahara; a vivir sus costumbres populares, como los carnavales, o a navegar por sus aguas para disfrutar de paisajes incomparables llenos de vida y repletos de historia. La Revista de Zahara les anima a conocer, asimismo, la vida zahareña, a través de sus bares, restaurantes, hoteles y demás negocios que hacen latir a este pueblo. En Zahara, la Atarraya es más un arte cultural que una pesca. Cuando su práctica, como todas las realizadas con red, fue prohibida y el famoso concurso del restaurante Casa Juanito no se pudo celebrar como siempre, los zahareños no dudaron en alzar su voz. Un año después, y gracias al trabajo conjunto con Rafael Quirós, alcalde de Barbate, Zahara está a un paso de salvar su Atarraya. Mientras llega la aprobación, el pueblo podrá festejar su tradicional concurso como todos los verano gracias a un permiso especial.

ste año el popular concurso que desde hace más de dos décadas organiza el restaurante Casa Juanito de pesca de Atarraya se celebrará sin problemas. No ocurrirá como el pasado agosto, cuando las leyes pusieron freno al desarrollo de un arte milenario. El certamen tendrá lugar con un permiso especial, mientras llega la aprobación definitiva de esta pesca. Un tema muy importante para los jóvenes tarrayeros, que ha supuesto todo un año de trabajo para Rafael Quirós. Según explica el alcalde de Barbate, Rafael Quirós, cuando en 2009 un grupo de tarrayeros y caras conocidas de Zahara se reunió con él para solicitar su apoyo y conseguir que la atarraya no se perdiese, no dudó en ponerse a trabajar. El objetivo no era otro que conseguir encontrar una vía para salvar esta pesca. Para ello, elaboraron un informe exhaustivo y una propuesta que hicieron llegar a la Consejería de Medio Ambiente. Entre otras medidas, Quirós argumenta que solicitaron la aprobación de una veda similar a la que se tiene la caza, de dos o tres meses al año, con un número de horas al día, y una serie limitada de licencias. Así, el impacto sobre la fauna sería mínimo y los amantes de esta práctica

podrían conservar su arte. Desde la Consejería consideraron el trabajo presentado, y comenzaron a estudiar la fórmula para que esta práctica pudiera continuar siendo una parte arraigada de la cultura zahareña. De esta forma, después de elaborar nuevos estudios, esta vez para analizar las especies susceptibles de ser atrapadas por la atarraya, y para regular qué tipo de luz de malla se podría usar para evitar la captura de piezas pequeñas, la atarraya está muy cerca de regularse. Cuando esto suceda, el alcalde explica, no obstante, que la práctica tendrá que ceñirse a una serie de normas. Así, se especificará una veda que abarcará desde la desembocadura del río Barbate hasta Pajares y que estará vigente dos meses al año, agosto y septiembre, de seis de la tarde a nueve de la noche. La pesca, asimismo, requerirá de licencia, aunque Quirós indica que la idea es que los permisos sean rotativos para que, de este modo, todos puedan utilizarlos. Mientras llega la aprobación definitiva, los zahareños podrán seguir con su arte gracias al concurso del restaurante Casa Juanito, que ya calienta motores para ser, como cada año, todo un éxito y una garantía para que el pueblo no pierda sus tradiciones.

The traditión survives in Zahara

In Zahara, the Atarraya, or casting net, is more a cultural art than a form of fishing. When practising this kind of fishing was banned alongside all other methods using nets and the famous Casa Juanito restaurantʼs competition could not be held as it always had been, the people of Zahara soon raised their voices. A year later, and thanks to a joint effort with the mayor of Barbate, Rafael Quirós, Zahara is one step away from saving its Atarraya. While waiting for the official go-ahead, the town will be able to hold its customary competition like it does every summer thanks to its special permit.

his year the popular casting net contest, which has been organised for over twenty years by Restaurante Casa Juanito, will be held without any hindrance. It will not be like last August when the law stopped them from practicing this ancient art. The contest will take place with a special permit while they await final approval for the fishing. It is a very important matter for the young tarrayeros and has meant a year of hard work for the mayor of Barbate. According to the mayor, Rafael Quirós, when in 2009 a group of casting-net fishermen and well-known Zahara residents met him to ask for this support and prevent the atarraya from being lost, he immediately got to work. The aim was to find a way to save this kind of fishing. With this in mind, they prepared an exhaustive

report and a proposal which they sent to the Regional Environment Ministry. Among other measures, Quirós argued in favour of a close season similar to the one for hunting, lasting two or three months of the year, with a certain number of hours per day and a limited number of licences. The impact on sea life would be minimised and lovers of this fishing method would preserve their art. The Regional Ministry took into consideration the report they submitted and started to assess how this method could continue to be a deeply rooted part of Zahara’s culture. After carrying out further studies, this time to analyse the species susceptible to being trapped in the casting net, and to regulate a mesh span that could be used to avoid catching small creatures, the atarraya is very close

to being regulated. However, when this happens, the mayor explains, the practice will have to abide by a number of rules. A close season will be specified for the area between the mouth of the River Barbate and Pajares, which will be in force for two months of the year, August and September, from six to nine in the evening. The fishermen will require a licence, although the local council have indicated that the idea is for the permits to rotate so that everyone can use them. While they await final approval, Zahara’s inhabitants can continue their art thanks to the Restaurante Casa Juanito competition, which is already making preparations to make sure, as ever, that the event is a resounding success, ensuring the town does not lose its traditions.

Y es que Zahara de los Atunes es uno de los pocos espacios de la península que todavía conserva un litoral vírgen de fina arena y aguas cristalinas donde, por suerte, el paisaje natural impera sobre el de hormigón y cemento. Además, es uno de los pocos parajes en los que es posible contemplar cómo el verde de la

naturaleza se funde con el azul del mar ante un horizonte excepcional con vistas al continente africano y que cada tarde se tiñe de naranja para despedir al sol. La belleza no es, sin embargo, el único atractivo de este pequeño pueblo de pescadores al que el turismo de calidad ha coronado en el mapa como enclave privilegiado y que ha sabido mantener su esencia a pesar del incremento de visitantes. Así, quién acude

a Zahara encuentra también un pueblo con arraigo en el que perderse, pasear, tomar unas cañas o degustar el mejor pescado, ése que atrapan con mimo los marineros del lugar para llenar los mostradores de decenas de bares y restaurantes que pueblan la zona. Zahara cuenta, por otra parte, con una amplia historia en la que se entrelazan influencias de distintas culturas, que lo enriquecieron y que dejaron a

su paso construcciones tan fascinantes como el Palacio de los Duques de Medina Sidonia. Éste se creó en la primera mitad del Siglo XV y desempeñaba las funciones de castillo defensivo contra la piratería turco-berberisca; palacio residencial de los Duques de Medina Sidonia mientras duraba la temporada de la almadraba, y chanca, factoría donde se troceaban, salaban y preparaban los atunes. Hoy es el único

espacio con estas características que se conserva en todo el mundo. La exclusividad también tiene su espacio reservado en este paraíso. La urbanización Atlanterra es una de las zonas de mayor expansión turística del lugar. Está enclavada en un o de los parajes más hermosos de España, en una montaña con vistas al Atlántico. El complejo cuenta con restaurantes, hoteles y otras infraestructuras, pero, en su justa me-

dida, sin sellar entre ladrillos la belleza natural del entorno. Si a todo esto se le añade el trato afable y alegre de sus gentes, es fácil comprender porqué Zahara es el destino elegido por multitud de ciudadanos de toda Europa como lugar al que acudir para pasar sus vacaciones. De ellos, no son pocos los que quedan embrujados por la magia zahareña y deciden quedarse para siempre a su ‘vera’.

ocated in the Straits of Gibraltar area between the towns of Tarifa and Barbate, life in Zahara is different. Or at least, this is the assertion of those who are lucky enough to live in this incredible part of the Cadiz province, which owes its name to the tuna (‘atún’ in Spanish), the fish that reigns over this place with a long seafaring tradition. The legacy continues today, although on a smaller scale, thanks to the many families who make their living from the sea. Those who have the good fortune of ex-

El restaurante Porfirio es uno de los establecimientos con más solera de la zona y el lugar idóneo si se busca saborear el marisco más fresco. Esta filosofía les ha valido para que, cada año, desde Semana Santa hasta pasado el Puente del Pilar, el establecimiento cuente con una nutrida clientela. Quienes van a Porfirio suelen decantarse por el marisco. Y es que este restaurante tiene en su carta productos que no se encuentran en muchos kilómetros alrededor, como las gambas blancas de Huelva o las almejas de Isla Cristina. Además, es un lugar idóneo para degustar las mejores cigalas de tronco, langostas de Tarifa o carabineros pescados cerca del Cabo de San Vicente. Sin duda, los amantes de la buena gastronomía saben que en este lugar se come bien, y no pasan por alto cualquier oportunidad para sentarse en su terraza y saborear un bogavante a la

plancha, algo que sólo está bueno si es fresco de verdad. En Porfirio, sin embargo, no todo es marisco. Sus propietarios cuentan con una carta completa pensada para todos los bolsillos, gustos y preferencias. De esta forma, algunos de sus platos estrella son los pimientos del piquillo rellenos de centollos y puerros o las ortiguillas, que se fríen al instante de ser pedidas para que no pierdan ni un ápice de sabor. Se trata, en resumen, de un restaurante familiar, cercano y, sobre todo, accesible para todos, al que acudir para darse un auténtico festival de sabores del mar.

Restaurante Porfirio is one of Zahara’s most oldest and its history spans several decades. For the past nine years Juan José Torrejón Pacheco and family have been at the helm, working day-today to offer their customers quality food. “We like to serve delicious fish and seafood, as though we were going to eat it ourselves”, Juan José explains. This philosophy has meant that every year, from Easter until well into October, the establishment is always busy. Those who go to Porfirio tend to opt for

seafood. The restaurant’s menu includes produce unavailable elsewhere in the vicinity, like white Huelva prawns or Isla Cristina clams. It is also the ideal place for sampling the best crayfish, Tarifa lobsters or carabinero prawns fished near the Cape of San Vicente. Undoubtedly, lovers of good food know they will eat well at this restaurant and will never pass by an opportunity to sit on its terrace and sample a grilled lobster, a dish that is only good when it is truly fresh. At Porfirio, however, it’s not all about the seafood. The restaurant offers a complete menu aimed at all budgets, tastes and preferences. Its star dishes include the piquillo peppers stuffed with spider crab and leeks or the ortiguillas (anemones) ,which are fried to order so they retain all of their flavour. In short, this relaxed and family-oriented restaurant is, above all, a place where anyone can go to enjoy a true festival of seaside flavours.

Zahara es fuente de inspiración para muchos artistas, que encuentran en esta tierra del sur un espacio perfecto para desarrollar su obra. Es el caso de Maureen, una artista francesa afincada en la zona con una creatividad sorprendente. Utilizando viejas maderas, esta pintora es capaz de dar forma a obras de arte con una originalidad extraordinaria.

l contemplar la obra de Maureen uno no se encuentra con un cuadro al uso. No se aprecian paisajes, no se observan retratos, ni detalles, ni escenas de ningún tipo. El arte de Maureen es radicalmente distinto a cuanto se ve en las galerías. Quizás sea precisamente esta originalidad la que hace que su trabajo guste tanto. Para esta francesa cada obra es como si fuera la primera. Su técnica requiere de esfuerzo y, sobre todo, de mucho tiempo y dedicación. Cuando decide crear sale a la calle en busca de alguna madera vieja. Puertas antiguas, palés abandonados, listones, y todo tipo de piezas en madera, a los que ella denomina ‘de recuperación’, son la base sobre la que desarrolla sus trabajos. Así, antes de ponerse a pintar, esta artista dedica horas a adecentar la madera y prepararla para que, de alguna manera, le sirva de lienzo. Sobre

la materia Maureen crea. Confiesa que sus cuadros son evolutivos y que nunca sabe cómo van a resultar hasta que los termina. Lo cierto es que son obras de arte con una fuerza impresionante y que trasmite sentimientos distintos a según quien los contemple. Su colección no se enmarca en ningún estilo concreto, aunque sí respon-

de al suyo propio. Y es que en todos sus cuadros predomina el juego con la materia, las texturas y las formas, tres constantes de su colección, siempre realizada en acrílico. Aunque no cree en la inspiración, Maureen reconoce que sus pinturas albergan todo cuanto siente o ha sentido. La luz de Zahara, por ejemplo, dice dar-

le energía e influirle en sus obras, en las que destaca la fuerza del color. A pesar de su creatividad, reconoce que su obra es, sobre todo, trabajo, pruebas y bocetos en busca de creaciones completas. Nunca se queda con un cuadro si no le llena al cien por cien. Tal vez ese afán perfeccionista sea lo que convierte a sus pinturas en únicas.

Zahara is a powerful source of inspiration for many artists, to whom this southern land is the perfect place for engaging in their work. This is the case of Maureen, an astonishingly creative French artist based in the area. Using old wood, this painter is able to produce extraordinarily original works of art.

o contemplate the work of Maureen is to look at a painting of our age. There are no landscapes, portraits, details or scenes of any kind. Maureenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work is radically different to the other art that can be seen in the galleries. It is perhaps precisely this originality that makes it so popular. For this Frenchwoman, every piece is as though it were her first. Her technique

requires hard work and, above all, a great deal of time and dedication. When she decides to create she goes out in search of old wood. Old doors, discarded pallets, battens and all kinds of pieces of wood, which she calls â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;reclaimedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, are the base on which she carries out her work. Before painting, the artist devotes several hours to sprucing up and preparing the wood so that someway or an-

other it can be used as a canvas. Maureen then creates her work of art on this material. She admits that her paintings are evolutional and she never knows how they will end up until they are finished. One thing for certain is that they are works of art with incredible power, transmitting different feelings depending on who is looking at them. Her collection does not fall within a specific

style, although it does have a style of its own. All of her paintings feature an interplay between material, textures and shapes, three constants in her collection, always painted in acrylic. Although she does not believe in inspiration, Maureen admits that her paintings contain everything she feels or has felt. She says, for instance, that Zaharaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s light gives her energy and

influences her work, in which strength of colour predominates. Despite her creativity, she admits that her art is, above all, hard work and trial and error in search of complete creations. She never keeps a painting if it does not fulfil her one hundred percent. Perhaps it is this element of perfectionism that makes her paintings unique.

Un lugar en el que en otro tiempo se regentó la antigua botica del pueblo y en el que hoy es posible sentarse a comer envueltos por la magia de una construcción rehabilitada que, al igual que el Palacio de Jadraza, data del lejano siglo dieciséis, época de auge de las almadrabas del Duque de Medina Sidonia. Con su forma abovedada, La Botica confortaba a la guardia del Duque y al personal que, en aquellos años, acudía de todo el reino a trabajar o subsistir gracias a las prósperas almadrabas. Un arte milenario del que hace mención Miguel de Cervantes en su novela ‘La ilustre fregona’ y que aún hoy se conserva en la zona para deleite de los paladares más exigentes. Así, uniendo pasado y presente en un mismo espacio, La Botica se abre al visitante como parte viva de la historia de Zahara. Un lugar de referencia en el que degustar exquisitas elaboraciones culinarias realizadas con el mejor atún rojo de almadraba, pescado de la Bahía, pescado de roca o carnes de retinto, entre otros suculentos manjares que aguardan entre los muros de un restaurante con sabor a historia.

In the place occupied in another era by the old town pharmacy, today it is possible to sit and eat enveloped in the magic of a restored building which, like the Palacio de Jadraza, dates back to the Sixteenth Century, a time when the trap-net fisheries of the Duke of Medina Sidonia were at their peak. With its domed shape, La Botica would provide comfort for the duke’s guards and the workers who, at that time, would come from all over the kingdom to earn a living from the prosperous trap-net fisheries. This ancient art, mentioned by Cervantes in his novel La ilustre fregona (‘The Illustrious Kitchen Maid’), is preserved to this day in the area to the delight of the most discerning palates. So, uniting past and present in one place, La Botica is open to visitors as a living part of Zahara’s history. Los primeros faros no tenían nada que ver con lo que hoy conocemos. La ayuda a la navegación nocturna se realizaba a través de hogueras, que intentaban mantener siempre encendidas para seguridad de las embarcaciones. Desde entonces, esa luz nunca volvió a apagarse y los faros fueron evolucionando al compás de los siglos y formando parte del paisaje costero mundial. Para las embarcaciones que desde antaño surcaron las aguas del

Estrecho de Gibraltar, las costas de Marruecos y Cádiz alzaron torres privilegiadas con las que iluminar su viaje. Trafalgar, Camarinal, Espartel, Punta Malabata o Punta Carnero son algunos de los lugares a los que acudir para contemplar aquellos viejos faros que aún hoy permanecen en guardia en lo alto de la costa soportando temporales y observando ‘mudos’ el pasar de la historia.

From the oldest of all, the Pharos of Alexandria, to the most modern, lighthouses have always been magical buildings and an integral part of the seafaring tradition. t the dawn of history, sailing was always done with the coast in view and by day. If they decided to sail off it would always be in daylight and they used distinctive details such as beaches or trees in order to navigate. Later on, with method proving to be unsafe, seafarers decided to erect small towers with signals or identifying marks. When it was discovered that the stars were a good guide, man began to sail by night, giving rise to the invention of lighthouses. The first lighthouses were nothing like those we know today. Nocturnal sailing was assisted by bonfires, which they endeavoured to keep alight so that vessels would be safe. Since then the light has never gone out and lighthouses evolved over the centuries and became part of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coastal landscape. For the boats that since days of old have sailed the waters of the Straits of Gibraltar, the coasts of Morocco and Cadiz erected fine towers with which to illuminate their voyage. Trafalgar, Camarinal, Espartel, Punta Malabata and Punta Carnero are some of the places to visit to see the old lighthouses that remain on guard today at high points along the coast, withstanding storms and silently observing the passage of history.

With the shop’s cosy and pleasant ambience, customers become friends thanks to Helena’s magic, her ‘Bohemian Chic’ style and the curiosity aroused by the almost daily arrival of new clothes. Reproducir la realidad con más ﬁdelidad y objetividad que la fotografía es a lo que en arte se le denomina hiperrealismo. En Barbate, José Rivera es todo un maestro de esta técnica. Sus cuadros parecen escenas robadas al tiempo para contar a quien las contempla historias que nunca acaban. El mar, la almadraba, el sol y todo lo que encierra su tierra sirven a este artista de inspiración para dar forma a realidades dibujadas a pincel.

osé Rivera es uno de esos artistas que lo son de nacimiento. Con sólo 14 años hizo su primera exposición y, desde entonces, no ha cesado de crear. Durante años tuvo que compaginar su arte con otros trabajos con los que se ganaba la vida. Hoy, sin embargo, este autodidacta tiene la suerte de que su vida esté totalmente centrada en su gran pasión: la pintura. No hace falta preguntar a Rivera su técnica, aunque, si se hace, éste, humilde,

se presenta como un pintor realista con aspiraciones de dominar, algún día, el hiperrealismo. Sea como fuere, lo cierto es que sus cuadros llaman la atención por ser auténticos calcos de la realidad, apreciándose en ellos detalles que, seguramente, se escaparían de algunas miradas si se observase la escena real. Para lograr tal precisión, este artista, admirador de Antonio López, explica que hay que dedicar, sobre todo, tiempo, esfuerzo, paciencia y contemplación.

Así, para lograr cuadros que parezcan instantáneas de la realidad, a Rivera le gusta vivir en primera persona el momento a la par que capturarlo con su cámara fotográfica para poder, después, estudiarlo con esmero hasta conseguir dibujarlo tal y como él lo percibió. Como no podría ser de otra forma, la inspiración a este pintor se la da su tierra. No es de extrañar, al ver la belleza de la zona, que José Rivera cuente con una amplia colección de cuadros de

De entre todos ellos, destacan las obras que este barbateño ha dedicado a la almadraba, pinturas en las que los atunes parecen aún temblar entre las manos de los pescadores al salir del mar. Aunque el blanco y negro lo trabaja casi a la perfección, sobre todo llaman la atención sus elaboraciones a color, óleos con una fuerza y una luminosidad impresionantes. Su buena mano con la pintura le ha valido a este andaluz para que sus obras estén en muchos

hoteles de la zona a través de grandes murales pintados por él para engalanar sus muros. Asimismo, Rivera posee un extenso curriculum de exposiciones en salas de Madrid, Marbella, Fuengirola, el Puerto de Santa María, Conil o Barbate, entre otras. En breve, este amante del dibujar tiene previsto abrir una escuela de pintura para poder iniciar a pequeños y a mayores en el mundo de la pintura e inculcarles su pasión por un arte que a José Rivera le da, cada día, la vida.

osé Rivera is one of those artists who was born as one. At just fourteen years of age he organised his first exhibition and since then he has never stopped creating. For years he had to combine his art with other jobs that earned him a living, but now this self-taught artist is fortunate enough to live a life centred entirely on his great passion: painting. There is no need to ask Rivera what his technique is, but if you do this humble artist describes himself as a realist painter aspiring to master hyperrealism some day. Whatever he is, one thing for certain is that his paintings catch the eye as true carbon copies of reality, depicting details that would probably escape the attention of many looking at the real scene. To achieve such precision,

this artist, an admirer of Antonio López, explains that above all one needs time, effort, patience and contemplation. To achieve paintings that look like snapshots of reality, Rivera likes to experience the moment firsthand as well as capture it with his camera, so that later he can study the picture closely in order to depict it just as he saw it. As one would expect, this painter’s inspiration is his land. It is no surprise, given the beauty of the area, that José Rivera has a sizeable collection of paintings with a marine theme. Among these, the Barbate artist’s paintings of the almadraba, the trap-net fishing, are particularly outstanding: works of art in which the tuna fish look like they are trembling in the hands of the fishermen as they come out of the sea.

Although he works to near-perfection in black and white, his colour paintings are especially eye-catching, oil paintings with incredible power and light. His amazing ability has meant that this Andalusian has paintings in many local hotels in the form of large murals painted by the artist to decorate walls. Rivera also has an extensive résumé of exhibitions at galleries in Madrid, Marbella, Fuengirola, Puerto de Santa María, Conil and Barbate, among others. Soon this art lover plans to open a painting school so that he can begin to introduce kids and grownups alike to the world of painting and instil in them his passion for an art form that José Rivera lives with every day of his life.

ablar de Atlanterra es hablar de Puerto Zahara. Y es que la labor de esta inmobiliaria en el desarrollo y promoción de esta zona fue, además de pionera, decisiva para que hoy Atlanterra sea lo que es. Así, siempre han trabajado con distintos planes de actuación, como la negativa de construir edificios de más de tres plantas, respetar la primera línea de playa, colocar tablas de madera para acceder al litoral o la instalación de contenedores de basura en los diferentes accesos a la misma para que la basura se deposite allí y no en la playa, entre otros. Su buena labor les ha servido para ser todo un referente del sector y para consolidarse como un ejemplo a seguir. Por ello, pese a los tiempos difíciles que corren, Puerto Zahara ha seguido crecien-

do y expandiendo su actividad siempre para y por el cliente. Puerto Zahara siendo líder del sector, ha expandido su mercado a otros campos, como el del alquiler, con la empresa Zahara Alquileres, o el de mantenimiento y gestión de servicios, con Zahara Servicios y Gestiones. Straits Coasts. Summer campaign. The Zahara Magazine offers us a spectacle which takes place out of our sight every day of the year, which we can experience on dry land. We explore the seabed asking the same question that thousands of divers ask when they reach the chosen point of immersion: is there life?

ust a third of out planet is land. The remaining two thirds are water. Vast and unexplored territories, the seas and oceans harbour the secrets of the life that saw our birth as a species and other big mysteries that are yet to be resolved. The Straits and the surrounding coasts are the only natural connection between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The difference between the densities of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, which has a higher salinity, makes the water from the former enter our coasts on the surface, while the water from the latter empties into the ocean along the bottom, thereby creating a unique ecosystem, the only one of its kind in the world. On our coasts we can see species that live only in the less salty and colder waters of the Atlantic and, at a lesser depth, we can see species that live in the Mediterranean at depths at which immersion is unadvised.

From large fish, molluscs and crustaceans to mammals like the bottlenose, striped and common dolphins, pilot, killer and sperm whales and the second biggest whale of the seas, the blue whale, cleave through our seas and regularly visit our coasts. We just have to respect our environment and see ourselves as mere visitors and not the owners of what we are looking at in order to enjoy this incredible natural spectacle. The seas and oceans occupy the majority of the world’s surface, they are a source of energy and food and they provide us with medicines that improve our health, they regulate the temperature and provide us with a privileged setting to enjoy, and nevertheless we insist on calling our home Planet Earth. Would it not be more correct to call it Planet Water?

no de los lugares que recomiendan de Zahara es La Morada. Siguiendo el refrán de ‘donde fueras haz lo que vieras’, no dudé un instante en visitar este local, y la experiencia fue más que aconsejable. El poder tomar un mojito viendo atardecer desde una espectacular terraza, cenar a la luz de las velas, o disfrutar de una buena copa es, sólo, una pequeña parte de todo lo que convierte a La Morada en uno de los sitios de moda. Al subir las escaleras que conducen a La Morada sorprende encontrarse con un lugar mágico en el que la arquitectura se alía con el diseño para proporcionar un espacio perfecto en el

que dejarse llevar. Tras despedir al sol en la terraza, la parte más espectacular del local, decidimos quedarnos a cenar. Nos da la bienvenida el chef y gerente del lugar, un joven argentino llamado Peter que nos cuenta la historia de La Morada, el resultado de un proyecto conjunto con su gran amiga Agueda (dueña del centro de masajes Pléyades, en la playa de Zahara) de unir diseño y arquitectura con buena gastronomía. Le preguntamos entonces por la carta y con el semblante sereno nos confiesa un poco de su vida. Peter lleva desde los dieciséis años trabajando en cocina y viajando. A pesar de su juventud este argentino ha estado en lugares como Ibiza, Sierra

Nevada, Inglaterra, Sudeste Asiático y, así, hasta treinta países diferentes. De todas sus estancias fue recopilando sabiduría gastronómica, que ahora plasma en La Morada con elaboraciones que dan forma a una carta internacional con platos orientales entre los que destaca el sushi. Tras una agradable cena a base de cocina mediterránea de autor con influencias asiáticas y amenizada con un show de tango, nos resistimos a marcharnos. El local tiene embrujo y nos dejamos seducir hasta altas horas con buena música. No es de extrañar que en sólo un año La Morada se haya convertido en el lugar favorito de muchos. Sin duda repetiremos.

ne of the most highly recommended places to go in Zahara is La Morada. Observing the saying ‘when in Rome...’, I did not hesitate to visit this bar and the experience was more than recommendable. Sampling a mojito while watching the sun go down from its spectacular terrace, enjoying a candlelit dinner and drinking a cocktail are just a small part of what makes La Morada one of the ‘in’ places to go. Climbing the stairs that lead to La Morada, a magical place appears before you in which architecture is married with design to produce a perfect space for entertainment. After sundown on the terrace, the most spectacular part of the bar,

we decided to stay and have dinner. We were welcomed by the chef and manager, a young Argentine named Peter, who told us the story of La Morada, the result of a joint project with his great friend Agueda (the owner of the Pléyades massage centre, in Zahara Beach), to combine design and architecture with good food. We asked for the menu and with serene look on his face he told us a bit about his life. Peter has been working in kitchens and travelling for seventeen years. Despite his young age this Argentine has already explored places such as Ibiza, Sierra Nevada, England, South-East Asia, up to thirty different countries in all. On all his travels he went about collecting culinary wisdom,

which he now offers at La Morada in the form of an international menu with oriental dishes, including sushi. After a pleasant dinner of signature Mediterranean cuisine with Asian influences and a tango show to boot, we were compelled to stay . The bar has charm and we let ourselves be seduced until the early hours with some great music. It’s no surprise that in just one year La Morada has become many people’s favourite place. We will most definitely return.

Carlos Yebra, nacido en Lérida en 1951, y trasladado a Madrid en 1970, tras veintisiete años de experiencia profesional, una impresionante cartera de clientes y producciones y una no menos abundante lista de premios y galardones nacionales y extranjeros, siguen excitándole los desafíos de los directores artísticos y la ampliación de los confines territoriales de la fotografía. Desde que, a mediados de 1993, decidiera dar el salto de las técnicas tradicionales a las posibilidades abiertas por la tecnología digital, su proyección, incluso su propia concepción fotográfica, han tomado un nuevo derrotero. Una senda que él gusta de definir como “el camino más puro de la fotografía”, por la que transita a los mandos de sus dos estaciones de retoque digital con scanner de tambor y su filmadora de alta resolución. Asentado en la vanguardia de la práctica digital y, más importante todavía, en el selectivo club de la digitalización de grandes producciones, Yebra ejerce así de nuevo Magallanes en su conquista de continentes inexplorados, ricos de luces tan ciertas como inexistentes, geografías y colores imposibles. Un Dorado en el que conviven simultáneos el sol y la luna, la civilización y la barbarie, la perfección de la utopía y la fullería del hechicero.

Tanto poder tenía que llamar, naturalmente, la atención de los poderosos. Hoy, asu puerta, acuden los más incluyentes mercaderes, consignatorios y monarcas del imperio con los fondos suficientes para costear nuevas singladuras a lo quimérico pero ya fatalmente posible: Mercedes, Ford, Jaguar, Nestlé, El Corte Inglés, CocaCola, J&B, Passport, Loewe, Swatch, Telefónica, Repsol, Renfe... Y parte de nuevo. Magallanes cuando embarca, Carlos Yebra acabará transformándose al final de su regreso en el Spielbert de Santorcaz, cuando en el duermevela de su laboratorio digital, la electrónica y la cirugía de la imagen hagan latir por fin la imagen soñada, liberándola por calles, cabinas y periódicos. Antiguo estudiante de Bellas Artes, Yebra sigue pintando con su lápiz digital desde su irrenunciable condición de fotógrafo -que reinvindica con mayor fuerza que la de cineasta, su otra disciplina publicitaria-, la realidad aparentemente inútil, poniendo aquí y allá una u otra quimera y colores sobre el gris. Con una perfección tal que lo hace todo verosímil y fascinante. Algunos elementos sobreviven sin embargo al empeño transformador de nuestro personaje. Uno de ellos tiene como marco la Asociación Española de Fotógrafos de Publicidad (AEFP), de la que es presidente desde febrero de 1997, y cuya experiencia le ha producido una profunda desilusión, que confiesa sin querer entrar en mayores detalles. La otra, sobre la que sí se extiende, guarda relación con la premura y la urgencia de estos tiempos hostiles a la reflexión, un ejercicio imprescindible para los creadores publicitarios que, como él prefieren las tierras de frontera, alertas siempre al horizonte o, quizás, por el contrario, tan sólo ensimismados en el tránsito digital del paisaje a escenografía.

arlos Yebra, born in LĂŠrida in 1951 and a resident of Madrid from 1970, after 27 years of professional experience, an impressive portfolio of customers and productions and a no-less-abundant list of national and international prizes and awards, still gets excited by the challenges set by artistic directors and the broadening of

the horizons of photography itself. Since he decided in mid-1993 to take the leap from traditional techniques to the possibilities opened up by digital technology, his renown and even his very conception of photography have gone off in a new direction. It is a road that he likes to call â&#x20AC;&#x153;the purest path in photographyâ&#x20AC;?, which he travels along at the

helm of his two digital retouching stations with a drum scanner and his high-resolutionfilm camera. Positioned at the cutting edge of digital practices and, more importantly, in the select digitalisation club for big productions, Yebra is a modern Magellan searching for unexplored continents, rich in lights as real as they

are non-existent, impossible geographies and colours. An El Dorado where sun and moon, civilisation and savagery, the perfection of utopia and the sorcery of the conjurer live side by side. Having so much power, naturally, had to catch the eye of the powerful. Now, the most influential marketers, consignees and monarchs of the empire knock at his door with enough money to fund new journeys to the chimerical but now fatefully possible: Mercedes, Ford, Jaguar, NestlĂŠ, El Corte InglĂŠs, Coca-Cola, J&B, Passport, Loewe, Swatch, TelefĂłnica, Repsol, Renfe... And off he goes again. A Magellan when he embarked, on his return Carlos Yebra will become the Spielberg of Santorcaz (his village in the Madrid region), when in his digital laboratory electronics and image surgery finally give birth

to the ideal image, releasing it to the streets, projection rooms and newspapers. A former student of fine art, Yebra continues to paint, with his digital brush, in his inexorable capacity as a photographer (which he asserts with greater power than his capacity as film-maker, his other advertising discipline), an apparently pointless reality, positioning one chimera or another and colours on the grey. And with such perfection that he makes everything plausible and fascinating. However, some elements survive the transformative efforts of our artist. One of them falls within the framework of the Spanish Association of Advertising Photographers (AEFP), of which he has been the chairman since 1997, and his experience of it has led to profound disillusionment, which he ad-

mits without wanting to enter into more detail. The other, on which he does expand, is related to the pressure and urgency of these times that are hostile towards reflection, an essential exercise for advertising creators who, like him, prefer the frontier lands, with their sights set firmly on the horizon, or perhaps, conversely, are merely absorbed in the digital journey of the landscape to scenography.

a Asociación de Conservación, Información y Estudio sobre Cetáceos, CIRCE, lleva años desarrollando proyectos de estudio y conservación de cetáceos en el Campo de Gibraltar, Mar de Alborán y Golfo de Cádiz. Continuamente, realizan campañas en las que se dan cita centenares de voluntarios para avistar delfines, rorcuales y otras especies. Enmarcado en el Proyecto de Conservación de Orcas del Sur Peninsular, actualmente CIRCE realiza una nueva campaña, esta vez de avistamiento de orcas desde el Parque Natural de la Breña. Se trata de un proyecto que cuenta con la colaboración de la Junta de Andalucía, a través de la Consejería de Medio Ambiente. Una gran iniciativa en la que participa un gran número de amantes de la vida marina llegados desde numerosos rincones de Andalucía, España y Europa.

as campanas para avistar cetáceos que organiza Circe reúnen a centenares de voluntarios en busca de orcas, delfines, rorcuales y otras especies que surca nuestros mares

Situados en un punto estratégico del Parque Natural de la Breña, con una visión privilegiada de toda la ensenada, de la Almadraba y del entorno, los voluntarios esperan el paso de las orcas, un acontecimiento espectacular y muy frecuente en esta época del año. En la montaña, el equipo de CIRCE y los voluntarios trabajan con diverso material para poder sacar el máximo rendimiento a la campaña. Con un medidor de ángulos llamado teodolito y el programa Cyclops, logran captar la posición del animal, a través del ángulo vertical y horizontal y ayudados, además, por varios juegos de prismáticos y un teleobjetivo.

Horas de esfuerzo en la montaña, buscando animales en el mar, poco a poco, van dando sus frutos. Tanto es así, que en el tiempo que lleva en marcha este proyecto, con el apoyo de la embarcación de investigación Elsa, de CIRCE, ya han logrado tener dos avistamientos, algo muy importante si se tiene en cuenta que el grupo avistado no se veía desde hacía, al menos, ocho años. Con los datos que extraigan de esta campaña, se podrá conocer más sobre las orcas de esta zona del Estrecho, o del Golfo de Cádiz, estudiar sus movimientos, sus tácticas de caza cuando persiguen a un atún, así como tratar de indagar, aún más, sobre los diferentes grupos de orcas que se encuentran en este entorno marítimo tan lleno de vida.

or years the Association for Cetacean Conservation, Information and Study, CIRCE, has undertaken projects to study and protect cetaceans in Campo de Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea and the Gulf of Cadiz. They continually organise campaigns involving hundreds of volunteers spotting dolphins, finbacks and other species. As part of the Southern Peninsular Killer Whale Conservation Project, CIRCE is currently undertaking a new campaign, this time spotting killer whales from the Breña Nature Reserve. The project is backed by the Andalusian Regional Government through the Regional Environment Ministry. A large number of lovers of marine life are taking part in this great initiative, flocking from various parts of Andalusia, Spain and Europe.

Located in a strategic part of the Breña Nature Reserve, with a privileged view over the entire cove, the Almadraba (or trap-net fishing site) and the surrounding area, the volunteers wait for the killer whales to pass by, a spectacular event and a very frequent one at this time of year. Up in the hills, the CIRCE team and the volunteers work with various kinds of equipment to make the most of the campaign. With an angle-measuring device called a theodolite and the Cyclops programme, they capture the position of the animal using the vertical and horizontal angles, assisted by several sets of binoculars and a zoom lens. Hours and hours of hard work up on the hills, looking for animals in the sea, have gradually borne fruit. In the time the project has been underway, with the support of CIRCE’s research vessel Elsa, they have already had two sightings. This is very significant given that the group that was spotted had not been seen for at least eight years. The data extracted from this campaign will be used to learn more about the killer whales in this part of the Straits or the Gulf of Cadiz and study their movements and their hunting tactics when they go after tuna. The aim is also to find out more about the various groups of killer whales located in this marine environment that is so full of life.

omo buenos gaditanos, los zahareños son carnavaleros. La fiesta comienza una semana después de acabar en Barbate, a finales de febrero o primeros de marzo. Cuando el calendario marca la fecha, Zahara en pleno se disfraza para disfrutar de días de diversión, música y, sobre todo, buen ambiente. Durante varias jornadas las calles se transforman para albergar a sus habitantes, que toman el pueblo ataviados con todo tipo de disfraces confeccionados con el arte y la imaginación que solamente pueden aportar los gaditanos. El carnaval se convierte, de esta forma, en un homenaje a la imaginación y en una gran excusa anual para olvidarse de todo al ritmo de las mejores letrillas carnavalescas. Cada año la cita cuenta con un amplio calendario de actividades, preparadas para que no decaiga el ambiente ni un instante. Pequeños y mayores cuentan con todo tipo de actos para divertirse al máximo en sus días grandes, como la tradicional cabalgata, llena de humor y descaro, o el baile de disfraces. Destaca, asimismo, por su arraigo y por la emoción que suscita entre las jóvenes, la elección de la Atunera y de sus damas de carnaval, que se pasean con sus cintas y sus coronas por las calles del pueblo. Otro de los momentos importantes de la fiesta de Don Carnal es la lectura del pregón de apertura de los carnavales, realizado siempre por importantes y simpáticos pregoneros tales como Salvador Estudillo, que fue el primero, el actor Paco Álgora, Paz Padilla o Manuel García Lozano, que tuvo el encargo de abrir la fiesta de este año.

No faltan, además, otras citas populares, como la mejilloná o la tortillá, donde el arte y la sátira se dan la mano en torno a la gastronomía. Risas, música y ‘cachondeo’ son las notas predominantes en estas dos ‘juergas’ carnavaleras. Los protagonistas máximos son, no obstante, los disfraces y las agrupaciones, que animan con sus coplas cualquier rincón de Zahara. Y es que el ingenio gaditano late en este pueblo con fuerza a través de canciones llenas de ironía y contenido, creadas con mimo por sus coplistas durante el resto del año para hacer vibrar a Zahara por carnaval.

Carnival reigns supreme in Zahara. For its inhabitants it is one of the most enjoyable times of year. Dancing, costumes, carnival groups and a boisterous atmosphere ﬁll the streets of a town where the ﬁesta of Don Carnal, as it is known, is enjoyed to the full.

ike all good Gaditanos (‘Cadiz provincers’), the inhabitants of Zahara love a good carnival. The party starts a week after it ends in Barbate, in late February or at the beginning of March. Whatever the date, all of Zahara dresses up to enjoy the fun, music and, above all, the great atmosphere. For several days the streets are transformed into a big party and the locals take over the town dressed in all kinds of costumes created with the artistry and imagination that can only come from a people of the Cadiz province. The festival becomes a wonderful tribute to the imagination and a great excuse to let oneself go to the rhythm of the best carnival music. Every year the event has an extensive programme

of activities, organised to make sure the atmosphere is ever-present. Kids and grownups enjoy all kinds of entertainment, such as the customary parade, full of good humour and brazenness, or the costume ball. Due to its tradition and the excitement it arouses among youngsters, one of the main attractions is the election of the carnival queen (known as the Atunera, the ‘tuna fisherwoman’) and her damas, or ladies, who parade with their ribbons and crowns through the town’s streets. Another important part of the festival is the opening speech, which is always given by prominent and entertaining speakers such as Salvador Estudillo, who was the first, the actor Paco Álgora, Paz Padilla or Manuel García Lozano,

who was responsible for getting the party underway this year. Other popular events include the mejilloná or the tortillá, in which art and satire are combined with gastronomy. Laughter, music and tomfoolery are the main features of these two carnival feasts. The big stars of the show, however, are the costumes and carnival groups which liven up every part of Zahara with their coplas, or carnival ballads. All the ingenuity that Cadiz is famous for is brought to life in the town in songs full of irony and inflammatory content, lovingly created by the coplistas throughout the year in order to bring vibrancy to Zahara at carnival time.

Hoy en día la gestión sostenible del agua es un tema que preocupa a todos. ATLANTERRA AG (S.A.), promotora de la urbanización, fue pionera en el buen uso de este preciado recurso. A principios de los años 80, cuando nadie se preocupaba por dónde iban las aguas residuales, en esta urbanización ya depuraban. Desde 2005, además, también poseen un sistema para la reutilización del agua. Todo, siempre, en pro del medio ambiente. Y es que, al contrario de los que muchos se empeñan en asegurar, Atlanterra es un lugar sostenible.

n algunas ocasiones se ha criticado el desarrollo urbanístico de Atlanterra. Lo que no se sabe es el tipo de política medioambiental y el amor por la naturaleza que desde su inicio han tenido las personas que la habitan. Son ellas, precisamente, las primeras que se ha preocupado desde hace décadas por mantener la esencia del lugar, desarrollando conductas de respeto ambiental aún cuando nadie hablaba de sostenibilidad. Es el caso de la buena gestión del agua, algo de gran actualidad pero que, en Atlanterra, controlan desde hace muchos años. A principios de los sesenta, comenzó a habitarse Atlanterra. En aquella época en la zona no existía ningún tipo de infraestructura y todo se tuvo que empezar desde cero, incluido el

abastecimiento del agua, un bien muy abundante en aquella tierra, que nunca ha sufrido restricciones en épocas de sequía y en la que proliferan las piscinas. Así, la urbanización desarrolló un ciclo integral para suministro del agua, que iba desde la extracción, transporte y distribución, hasta el saneamiento y la instalación de una depuradora. Aquella depuradora fue la primera que existió en la provincia de Cádiz y una de las primeras de Andalucía. Con el paso de los años y el crecimiento de la urbanización, esas instalaciones se quedaron pequeñas y a la par que se realizó una ampliación, se aprovechó para dar un nuevo paso pionero e incorporar a la depuradora un sistema para la reutilización del agua. De esta forma, desde 2005, el agua en Atlanterra puede aprovecharse en varios

ciclos y servir para otros usos como, por ejemplo, el riego del futuro campo de golf proyectado en la zona. Además, diseñada para 22.500 habitantes, la depuradora es una de las plantas mas completas actualmente en la región y está dotada de otros novedosos sistemas, como el ideado para la eliminación de olores. Hay que matizar, no obstante, que la autosuficiencia de Atlanterra se debe al esfuerzo de la iniciativa privada, que es la que, en este caso, a través de la promotora ATLANTERRA AG (S.A.), fundadora de la urbanización y a cargo de la misma desde 1962 hasta nuestros días, se ha mostrado solidaria con el medio ambiente y ha apostado por métodos sostenibles para el funcionamiento de una urbanización que vive tranquila y en armonía con el medio que la rodea.

Nowadays sustainable water management is an issue that concerns everyone. ATLANTERRA AG (S.A.), the developer of the resort, was a pioneer in using this precious resource efﬁciently. In the early eighties, when nobody cared where wastewater went, at this resort they were already treating it. Since 2005 it has also had a system for reusing water. The idea has always been to protect the environment. The fact is, unlike many insist on claiming, Atlanterra is a sustainable destination.

n occasions the property development in Atlanterra has been criticised. What people do not necessarily know about is the environmental policy and love of nature that the people who inhabit the area have had since the beginning. It was the residents who were the first to concern themselves decades ago with maintaining the essence of the place, developing environmental rules of conduct when nobody was even talking about sustainability. This was the case of the good water management practices that were adopted, a very topical issue which, however, has been under control in Atlanterra for many years. Atlanterra was first settled in the sixties. At that time there were no infrastructures in the area and everything had to be started

from scratch, including the supply of water, a resource that is abundant in this area, which has never been subject to restrictions during times of drought and where swimming pools proliferate. The resort developed an integrated water supply cycle which included extraction, transportation and distribution, sanitation and the installation of a treatment plant. That treatment plant was the first in the Cadiz province and one of the first in Andalusia. Over the years and with the growth of the resort these facilities became insufficient and as the development expanded the opportunity arose to take another pioneering step and incorporate a system for reusing water into the treatment plant. As a result, since 2005 it has been possible to use Atlanterra’s for other purposes such as

irrigating the future golf course planned in the area. In addition, the treatment plant, designed for 22,500 residents, is currently one of the region’s most complete facilities, equipped with innovative systems such as the one designed to eliminate odours. It has to be said, however, that Atlanterra’s self-sufficiency is down to the efforts of private initiative. In this case, the developer ATLANTERRA AG (S.A.), the founder of the resort, which it has overseen since 1962, has shown a great sense of responsibility towards the environment, backing sustainable methods to run a resort that lives in peace and harmony with its surroundings.

l Palacio de Zahara o de las Pilas, denominación esta con la que también se le conoce y que hace alusión a los recipientes utilizados para la conserva del atún en salazón, data del siglo XV. Probablemente fue mandado construir por Juan de Guzmán, primer Duque de Medina Sidonia, fallecido en 1468, o por su hijo Enrique, fallecido en 1492. Es de planta sensiblemente cuadrangular y constaba de tres torres: dos angulares, la de levante y la de poniente, y una central semicircular, donde estaba “la campana para tocar los rebatos”. De los tres torreones sólo se conserva el de poniente, que era donde vivía el casero. Se conservan parcialmente los restos de la Torre de Levante, a nivel de sillería de arranque. En fotografías de los años 1909, 1916 y 1932 se observa que la torre de levante era de mayor altura que la de poniente, probablemente por estar destinada aquella al atajador, es decir, al encargado de dirigir la vigilancia costera. De los tres huecos actualmente existentes en la Torre de Poniente se consideran originales la puerta de entrada y la ventana tronera, que servia para controlar el acceso al recinto. La ventana que

da a la calle Palacio de las Pilas – antigua Gobernador Sánchez González- fue abierta entre 1909 y 1932. El conjunto de la fortaleza esta formado por una muralla de sillarejo de ripios de piedra ostiónera y arenisca, recibidos con cal. En su interior había un enorme salero, hoy Iglesia, donde se almacenaba la sal que, casi siempre, se traía por mar desde El Puerto de Santa Maria, almacenes de pertrechos, de barcas y de maderas, carnicería, caballerizas, pozo, dependencias para el alojamiento del Duque y su séquito, hornos para amasar, piletas, etc. En la planta superior se encontraba los cuartos del capitán de la almadraba, del “veedor mayor”, del tesorero, del contador y de sus respectivos ayudantes, así como el oratorio y una cocina con despensa. La finalidad principal del recinto era servir de industria y residencia, aunque cumplía también una función defensiva. Ante todo era una chanca. Es su marcado carácter fabril posiblemente la nota más singular y característica de este complejo, por encima de la defensiva, y la justificación de su origen. En los Diarios de la almadraba se hacían constar,

año por año, las capturas de la temporada. El Diario más antiguo que se conserva en el Archivo de la Casa Ducal de Medina Sidonia es el de la temporada 1.554, donde figura que se pescaron ese año un total de 52.663 atunes. Luis Bravo de Laguna, probablemente en 1577 según José Regueira, dejó testimonio del carácter defensivo del Palacio, indicando que su muralla está cercada “de cantería en cuadro; por la parte de tierra tiene dos torres con sus trabucos y en la una dellas tiene tres piezas de bronce muy buenas y bien encabalgadas. Todas estas piezas tienen muy buen recaudo de munición de pelotas y pólvora”. Por su parte, el Teniente Coronel José de Ribas escribió en 1859 que podía ser de gran utilidad en el caso de una guerra marítima, ya que podía “servir para cuarteles de infantería y caballería, para pabellones de Sres. Oficiales, para almacenes de efectos, y para otros usos de utilidad para la guerra“, ya que “los edificios que actualmente existen habitables en el castillo de Zara prestan suficiente capacidad para alojar considerable número de tropa de infantería y caballería, y que en sus espaciosas plazas

dentro de murallas pueden formar en batalla á 3 de fondo para revista ú otros actos militares de 3 á 4000 hombres de infantería y de 300 á 400 caballos. Estas ventajosas proporciones que ofrece el castillo de Zara le recomiendan muy particularmente para el establecimiento de la batería que dejo propuesta, y que habiendo, como hay, algunos edificios disponibles, puede efectuarse á poca costa. Esta batería podrá ser de grande utilidad, porque cruzando sus fuegos con la torre de la Plata y con la que propondré establecer en el cerrillo de Barbate, pondrá en completa seguridad las grandes ensenadas y fondeaderos de Zara y Barbate, y protegerá sus playas.” Dentro del recinto, en el lienzo oeste y con fachada a la actual calle Doctores Sánchez Rodríguez, adquiere cierta importancia una obra realizada por el Consorcio Nacional Almadrabero. Se trata de una edificación en forma de palacete, elevada sobre parte de la muralla preexistente, de dos alturas más un mirador, netamente

diferenciada del resto del recinto y ejecutada en torno a 1930. Para Mª Teresa Pérez Cano y Eduardo Mosquera es probable que esta obra

fuera iniciativa de Serafín Romeu, Conde de Barbate, que había afrontado algunos años antes con el arquitecto jerezano Francisco Hernández la realización de una serie de edificaciones en la zona,

como la construcción de una Iglesia, la escuela y el proyecto de traída del agua potable a Barbate, encomendándole igualmente la realización de fábricas de salazones en San Fernando y en Isla Cristina. Este palacete fue inicialmente concebido para residencia del capitán de la almadraba y oficinas. Es probable que este arquitecto proyectará también la antigua escuela de Zahara ubicada en la calle Almadraba, realizada en 1932 por Serafín Romeu. Desde 1936 hasta 1974 el edificio se utilizó como cuartel, primero del ejército y después de la Guardia Civil. Dicha actividad fue compatibilizada con otros usos, incluido el residencial, habitando dentro del recinto varias familias del pueblo y destinándose también a taller de carpintería, panadería y estación de luz para abastecer a Zahara, de ahí el sobrenombre de el motor con el que aún es conocido el Palacio y que es debido al motor de luz que allí estuvo instalado.

THE PALACIO DE ZAHARA SIX HUNDRED YEARS OF HISTORY

In 2003 the Palacio de Zahara was given Place of Ethnological Interest and Asset of Cultural Interest status as a monument. It was the first building in Andalusia to earn this double recognition. Now it is an iconic and inalienable part of Zaharaʼs cultural and architectural identity.

he Palacio de Zahara, also known as the Palacio de las Pilas, alluding to the containers used for salting tuna (pilas meaning ‘basins’), dates back to the 15th Century. Its construction was probably commissioned by Juan de Guzmán, the first Duke of Medina Sidonia, who died in 1468, or by his son Enrique, who died in 1492. The building is appreciably quadrangular and had three towers: two angular towers to the east and west and a central semicircular tower, which housed the ‘bell for raising the alarm’. Of the three towers, only the western tower remains, which is where the keeper lived. The remains of the east tower are partially preserved at the base. In photographs from 1909, 1916 and 1932 the east tower is higher than the west one, probably because it was the one used by the coastal watchman. Of the three cavities that the west tower currently has, the main door and porthole window are believed to be original features, used to monitor access to the site. The window onto Calle Palacio de las Pilas, formerly Calle Gobernador Sánchez González, was opened between 1909 and 1932. The fortress complex comprises an ashlar wall of oyster stone and sandstone bound with lime. It housed an enormous salt ware-

house, now a church, that stored the salt that was usually brought by sea from El Puerto de Santa María, storerooms for munitions, boats and wood, a butcher’s, stables, a well, accommodation for the duke and his entourage, ovens for baking, washrooms etc. The upper floor housed the quarters of the captain of the trap-net fishery, the veedor mayor (the ‘senior overseer’), the treasurer, the bookkeeper and their respective assistants, as well as the oratory and a kitchen with a pantry.

The main purpose of the site was as a factory and residence, although it also had a defensive function. Above all it was a chanca, a fish salting factory. Its marked manufacturing character is possibly the most unique and characteristic feature of the complex, over and above its defensive function, and was the reason for its construction. The catches of the season were published in the trap-net journals every year. The oldest Diario that remains in the Archive of the Ducal House of Medina Sidonia is that of the 1554 season, when a total of 52,663 tuna fish were caught. All these cannons are very well provisioned with balls and powder”. Lieutenant Colonel José de Ribas wrote in 1859 that it could have been of great use in the event of maritime war, since it could “act as barracks for infantry and cavalry, quarters for officers, supply stores and other applications useful for war”, since “the buildings currently inhabitable at the Zara castle are big enough to house a considerable force of infantry and cavalry and the spacious yards within the walls are big enough for battle formations three-deep and for inspections or other military exercises with three to four thousand infantry and three to four hundred cavalry. These advantageous proportions offered by the castle of Zara make it highly recommendable in particular for establishing the battery I am proposing, and since some buildings are already available it could be done at little cost. This battery could be of great use because crossing its fire with the Plata tower and with the battery I propose to establish at the Barbate mill, it would provide complete security for the large inlets and anchorages of Zara and Barbate and will protect their beaches.” Inside the site, on the west wall and facing what is now Calle Doctores Sánchez Rodríguez,

a building constructed by the National TrapNet Fishing Consortium is an important element. This building constitutes a palacete, a small palace; it was erected on part of the pre-existing wall and has two stories plus a watchtower. It is clearly differentiated from the rest of the complex and was built in a round 1930. In the view of María Teresa Pérez Cano and Eduardo Mosquera, it is likely that this building was commissioned by Serafín Romeu, Count of Barbate, who a few years before had taken on the task, together with the architect from Jerez Francisco Hernández, of building a number of structures in the area, including a church, a school and the drinking water supply for Barbate, as well as salting factories in San Fernando and Isla Cristina. This palacete was initially conceived as a residence for the captain of the trap-net fishery and offices. It is likely that the same architect also designed the Zahara’s old school located on Calle Almadraba, built in 1932 by Serafín Romeu. From 1936 to 1974 the building was used as barracks, first for the army and then for the Guardia Civil. This function was combined with other uses, including residential ones, with several local families living on the site, and it was also used as a carpentry workshop, which led to its nickname el motor, by which the Palacio is still known, owing to the generator that was installed there.

e esta actividad muchos hicieron su forma de vida, acogidos a las Reales Ordenanzas. Tres son los elementos esenciales que definen la actividad legal de los corsarios: 1.- Tener “patente de corso” expedida por su respectivo gobierno. 2.- Abonar una fianza para cubrir posibles daños y perjuicios que podrían derivarse de l a transgresión de las normas. 3.- Todo barco neutral apresado tenía derecho a protestar su detención e iniciar un proceso contra sus apresadores ante los tribunales de Marina.

Porque la guerra de corso se ha definido como “la empresa naval de un particular contra los enemigos de su Estado, realizada con el permiso y bajo la autoridad de la potencia beligerante, con el exclusivo objeto de causar pérdidas al comercio enemigo”. Los primeros ordenamientos legales se remontan al siglo XIII, pero alcanzaron su auge con los grandes descubrimientos marítimos. El descubrimiento castellano de América traerá como consecuencia el desplazamiento del eje comercial mundial del Mediterráneo al Atlántico y con ello la ampliación a este ámbito de las actividades corsarias por parte de otras potencias marítimas europeas interesadas en acceder a la riqueza americana. > >

La actividad corsaria en el Estrecho de Gibraltar ha sido muy bien estudiada por el historiador algecireño Mario Ocaña y reflejada en diversas publicaciones referidas a los siglos XVIII y XIX. La última de estas publicaciones es el estudio de la actividad corsaria en nuestra zona en las Guerras Napoleónicas, en donde hace un muy pormenorizado análisis de las empresas corsarias españolas que actuaron en el ámbito del Estrecho y que tenían su base en los puertos de Algeciras, Tarifa y Ceuta. Eran en su mayoría miembros de la pequeña burguesía mercantil local dedicados al transporte marítimo de cabotaje, propietarios de pequeñas embarcaciones dedicadas en tiempos de paz al transporte de diferentes tipos de mercancías entre las poblaciones costeras. Cuando se producían conflictos internacionales y ante las necesidades de la Real Armada, transformaban sus barcos mercantes en corsarios al servicio de la Corona. Se utilizaron diferentes tipos de embarcaciones, aunque la predominante fue el jabeque, de casco muy fino y arbolado con tres palos: trinquete, mayor y mesana. Describe Ocaña tanto el tipo de embarcaciones como otras muchas peculiaridades de esta actividad. Lo primero que tenían que hacer era obtener la Real Patente de Corso, para lo que necesitaban un aval, disponer de una tripulación adecuada con la que el armador establecía una contrata en la que se detallaban las normas a seguir, los

salarios, los deberes de los tripulantes, el reparto de las presas, castigos a los infractores, etc. El barco, naturalmente, tenía que ir armado. El corso quedó oficialmente abolido en la declaración de París de 1856 a escala internacional y a excepción de España, Estados Unidos y México. Concretamente en el período inicial del siglo XIX el corso en España se regía por la Real Ordenanza de 1801 para “procurar por todos los medios posibles que cesen los funestos desórdenes que produce en la Europa una guerra larga y sanguinaria…valiéndome para ello de cuantos medios dicta la experiencia… promoviendo y fomentando el Corso particular en todos los mares… y auxiliando a todos los individuos que puedan hacerlo baxo aquellas leyes que autoriza el Derecho común…” Los barcos autorizados para practicar corso tenían que inscribirse ante notario y fue en los archivos notariales, sobre todo en el de Algeciras, donde Ocaña realizó una exhaustiva investigación y así, para el período entre 1801 y 1814, incluye numerosos cuadros en los que figuran el nombre del barco, del armador, tipo de barco, tonelaje, nombre de los barcos apresados, nacionalidad, procedencia, destino, carga y un largo etcétera de datos que dan idea de la gran actividad corsaria en el Estrecho.

Although privateering activity has often been confused with piracy, privateers had completely different proﬁles to pirates. Privateering was a legal activity that was highly regulated by the state authorities, in this case Spain.

any made this activity their way of life under the umbrella of the Royal Ordinances. There are three essential elements that define the legal activity of corsairs: 1. Holding a ‘privateering licence’ issued by their respective government. 2. Payment of a deposit to cover potential damages that may derive from infringing the regulations. 3. Any neutral ship captured had the right to dispute their detention and begin proceedings against their captors before the Naval Courts.

Privateering warfare has been defined as “the naval enterprise of a private individual against the enemies of the State, conducted with the permission and under the authority of the belligerent power, with the exclusive aim of causing losses to enemy trade”. The earliest legal edicts date back to the 13th Century, but reached their heyday with the great maritime discoveries. Castile’s discovery of the Americas resulted in the transferral of the world’s trading hub from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, the upshot of which was the expansion of privateering activities to this new domain on behalf of other European maritime powers wanting to gain access to the riches of America. Privateering activity on the Straits of Gibraltar has been studied in depth by the Algeciras historian Mario Ocaña and documented in various publications of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The most recent of these publications is a study on privateering activity in our area during the Napoleonic Wars, which offers a very detailed analysis of the Spanish privateering enterprises operating on the Straits and based at the ports of Algeciras, Tarifa and Ceuta. The majority of them were members of the local commercial petite bourgeoisie involved in coastal trading, owners of small vessels that in times of peace transported various kinds of goods between coastal towns and villages. When there was international conflict

and in view of the needs of the Royal Armada, their merchant ships were transformed into privateers in the service of the Crown. Various kinds of vessel were used, but the xebec was the most common, a very lighthulled ship with three masts: foremast, main mast and mizzenmast. Ocaña describes the types of vessel and also many other characteristics of this activity. The first thing they had to do was obtain a Royal Privateering Licence, for which they required a guarantee and a suitable crew with which the shipowner established a contract detailing the rules to follow, salaries, crew members’ duties, dis-

tribution of loot, punishments for breaking the rules etc. The ship, naturally, had to be armed. The privateer was officially and internationally abolished in the Paris Declaration of 1856 with the exception of Spain, the United States and Mexico. In the early 19th Century, privateering in Spain was regulated by the Royal Ordinance of 1801 in order to “prevent by any possible means the terrible disorder created in Europe by long and bloody wars… to which end whatever means experience dictates may be employed… promoting and encouraging privateering on all seas... and assisting any

Consequently, for the 1801 to 1814 period, Ocaña provides numerous tables featuring the name of the ship, the shipowner, the type of ship, its tonnage, the name of the captured ships, their nationality, port of origin, destination, cargo and many more details that give an idea of the intense privateering activity on the Straits.

Criada entre cámaras de fotos, carretes y sesiones de revelado, a Mary Guillén el amor por la imagen le viene de dentro. Aunque domina todas las técnicas fotográficas, el retrato es su pasión y, según confiesa, cada día descubre en él nuevas posibilidades de expresión. Así, cuando esta fotógrafa se coloca frente a un rostro es para inmortalizar no sólo una cara, si no una historia, un sentir y, en resumen, una vida. A todo ello le suma, siempre, una pizca de sus propios sentimientos, que también quedan plasmados en cada una de sus fotografías en forma de luces, sombras y otros detalles que varían según su estado de ánimo. En sus trabajos domina el blanco y negro. Para ella, este tipo de imágenes, con las que se crió, transmiten con mayor exactitud los detalles del rostro, aunque matiza que el color también esconde infinidad de genialidades. Lo que es cierto, es que la mayoría de sus obras están teñidas por la ausencia de color, tal vez para centrar, así, toda la atención en las historias que narran las personas fotografiadas. Gente del sur y del norte, de lugares lejanos o de muy cerca, hombre y mujeres a los que esta artista es capaz de hacer decir en silencio todo lo que llevan dentro.

Miradas que esconden desamor, arrugas que marcan sufrimiento, sonrisas que expresan esperanza, y un sin fin de escenas más conforman el trabajo de esta andaluza que, desde su estudio en Mairena del Alcor (Sevilla), se abre al mundo para captar la fuerza de cada rostro. Un empeño que le ha valido para obtener diversos reconocimientos, como la estatuilla de bronce que simboliza el máximo galardón fotográfico del Principado de Asturias, y, sobre todo, para poder dedicar su vida a su gran amor: la fotografía.

his is how Mary Guillén explains the raison d’être of her art. For this great photographer, taking photographs is not just about capturing a face in a snapshot. On the contrary, it is the result of a combination of feelings, thoughts and life itself, a connection between the model and the photographer. Having been brought up among cameras, films and developing sessions, Mary Guillén’s love of images comes from within. Although she has a command of all of the photographic techniques, portraits are her passion and, she confesses, every day she discovers new expressive possibilities within this art form. When this photographer positions herself in front of a face her aim is not just to immortalise it, but also to tell its story and give expression to a life. A pinch of her own ideas are added to every photograph in the form of lights, shadows and other details that vary depending on her frame of mind.

Black and white photography is one of her favoured techniques. In this kind of image, which she was brought up with, Mary believes the details of the face are transmitted with greater precision, although she stresses that colour can also be used for many fabulous effects. One thing for certain is that most of her work is characterised by an absence of colour, perhaps to focus the attention on the stories told by the people being photographed: people from south and north, from far-off places or nearby, men and women whose innermost self is brought out by this artist. Their faces might show a coolness, wrinkles that indicate suffering, smiles that express hope and endless scenes that make up the work of this Andalusian artists who, from her studio in Mairena del Alcor (Seville), is open to the world to capture the strength of each face. Her hard work has brought her various acknowledgements such as the bronze statue that symbolises the top Principality of Asturias photographic award and, above, it has meant she can devote her life to her great passion: photography.
