Library Staff Feature: Reference and Instruction Librarians Meet our Part-Time Reference & Instruction Librarians! The R&I Librarians take on many different roles, including providing reference and research help services inperson and via chat, email, and Teams meetings, being embedded as a support service in courses on Blackboard, assisting with development of the Library collection, teaching information literacy sessions, serving as liaisons to academic divisions, creating instructional guides and tutorials, coordinating library events, and much more! The R&I Librarians always go out of their way to help students, faculty, and community members in any way they can. Librarians are available online and in-person at the first floor service desk Mon-Thurs. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. , Fri.,10 a.m. to 2 p.m.., and Sat. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop by and thank a librarian today!

Library Reopening After nearly 18 months of having no or very limited in-person services, Library staff returned to fully in-person work and reopened the Library with limited services on Aug. 16, with a full reopening beginning Aug. 23. Staff members hit the ground running with an “all hands on deck” approach to processing nearly 1,000 student ID cards for new students as well as returning students who

did not receive ID cards last year due to the pandemic closing. Over the summer, while the building was closed to campus and the public, Library staff members came in to the building to complete some important projects, including a major weeding of materials from the collection, and installing a brand new RFID system that required tagging each circulating item in the Library. Along with the RFID system, new security gates were installed at each entrance of the Library. In addition, the Library had to get creative with staffing its service desks this semester, moving reference services down to the first floor. There were also some changes to office spaces, and the College Archives moved to the old Public Safety space (see page 2). Const

Between these changes and the plexiglass barriers and masks, things look a little different at the Library this semester, but we are happy to see students and colleagues again!

The College Archives The College Archives has a new home on the first floor of the Library! Although the new shelving area is somehow already full, this move also provides crucial space for the College Archivist to process and sort incoming material. We look forward to more accessible and digitized items soon!

Welcome Back with Constitution Day and Voter Registration events September 14 & 15! By: Andie Craley, Manager for Technical Services & Government Documents Librarian Double the celebration! HCC Library will have a two-day Constitution Day event on Tuesday, September 14 and Wednesday September 15 to welcome everyone back to campus and the Library! Constitution Day and Citizenship Day had its roots in 1940 with a joint resolution passed by Congress with originally the third Sunday in May as "I am an American Day." In 1952, Congress repealed that resolution and passed a new law to designate September 17 as Constitution Day to recognize the signing that occurred on September 17, 1787, retaining the designation of "Citizenship Day" to this day. Effective May 24, 2005, Congress passed legislation that all educational institutions observe Constitution Day with programming on or around September 17. HCC Library has been providing free access to government resources through its participation in the Federal Depository Library Program for 54 years. Check out tables set up on the 2nd floor of the Library in front of the Circulation Desk with voter registration applications, government resources from the Government Publishing Office, pocket constitutions, goodies such as festive pens, GovInfo Post-It notes, Ben’s Guide bookmarks and temporary tattoos, voting stickers, puzzle and activity sheets, and delicious cookies! Other activities include: •

Meet a Founding Father and Paralegal students as they make appearances around campus in the Library and in classrooms to hand deliver pocket constitutions! You can also find pocket constitutions and goodies at all 3 services desks in the Library!

Receive voter registration help from a Harford County Board of Elections representative from 10 AM to 2 PM on BOTH Tuesday September 14 and Wednesday September 15 at the tables on the Library 2nd floor! They can assist with submitting new voter registration, checking voter status, submitting election judge applications, and providing information on general elections. Stop by to spin their prize wheel, answer some election & voting trivia questions, and win a prize!

Remember: National Voter Registration Day is coming up on Tuesday, September 28 (https://nationalvoterregistrationday.org/)

Check out the displays on the 2nd floor of the Library related to the Constitution, 1st and 2nd amendments, and recent government issued reports and resources on human trafficking.

Find additional resource links, videos, and PowerPoints on the Constitution Day LibGuide (https://harford.libguides.com/ government_information).

In addition to the activities at the Library, the Behavioral & Social Sciences Division is planning to have a Panel Discussion on “The Constitution, Voting Rights, and Federalism” on Tuesday, September 14, 12:30-1:30 PM in Student Center, Rm. 243.
