A modern‐day Greek tragedy about money, power, lies, family, truth and consequences.

LIFE INSIDE THE MADOFF FAMILY

TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES LAURIE SANDELL In December 2008, the world watched as master financier Bernard L. Madoff was taken away from his posh Manhattan apartment in handcuffs, accused of swindling thousands of innocent victims‐ including friends and family‐out of billions of dollars in the world's largest Ponzi scheme. Madoff went to jail; he will spend the rest of his life there. But what happened to his devoted wife and sons? The people closest to him, the public reasoned, must have known the truth behind his astounding success. Had they been tricked, too?

LAURIE SANDELL has written for Esquire, GQ, Glamour and InStyle, among others, and has contributed cartoons to New York, Glamour and The Wall Street Journal. Her first book, the graphic memoir The Impostor's Daughter‐about her own experiences with her eccentric, secretive father‐was nominated for a 2009 Eisner Award.

With unprecedented access to the surviving family members‐wife Ruth, son Andrew and his fiancée Catherine Hooper‐journalist Laurie Sandell reveals the personal details behind the headlines. How did Andrew and Mark, the sons who'd spent their lives believing in and building their own families around their father's business first learn of the massive deception? How does a wife, who adored her husband since they were teenagers, begin to understand the ramifications of his actions? The Madoffs were a tight‐knit‐even claustrophobic‐clan, sticking together through marriages, divorces, and illnesses. But the pressures of enduring the massive scandal push them to their breaking points, most of all son Mark, whose suicide is one of the many tragedies that grew in the wake of the scandal. George Harrison 10 Years Later

From the editors who have previously brought forth best-selling illustrated biographies on the Beatles as a group and John Lennon in particular, now comes Remembering George Harrison: 10 Years Later. He was the quiet Beatle only in that he was standing alongside two louder-than-life characters and in front of a guy playing drums. He held many strong opinions-on Beatlemania, on global want, on his right to privacy, on his God-and gave firm voice to most of them. But George Harrison was certainly the most reluctant Beatle, wanting out almost as soon as he was in. He often said that his luckiest break was joining the band and his second luckiest was leaving it. The standard line is that George Harrison was an enigma, but perhaps he was transparent: a terrific guitarist, a fine songwriter, a wonderer, a seeker and, overriding all, a celebrity who hated and feared celebrity. George Harrison died at a friend’s home in Los Angeles ten years ago, in late 2001, at age 58, losing his last battle with cancer. He was beloved, and had been for a long time. He had thrived in the aftermath of the band’s breakup, becoming a recording artist on the level of his former mates McCartney and Lennon. He became as well the Happy Mystic, leading his legion of fans-of followers-toward a more meaningful way of living. As would be expected from LIFE, it is all here in pictures-the Hamburg days, the Cavern Club, the craze that was Beatlemania, the fun movies, the psychedelic period, the solo years (replete with Harrison’s reaction to Lennon’s death, and the subsequent attack on him and his wife at his English estate). The photographers who knew George and the Beatles best-Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg; Terence Spencer in the UK; Harry Benson in London, Paris and the U.S.; Bob Whitaker as the band’s official photographer during the halcyon years; LIFE’s John Loengard and Bill Eppridge throughout it all-are all here, as they were in our book on Lennon. This is an intimate look back, with many visual surprises. The narrative is largely written (by and the book is edited by) LIFE managing editor Robert Sullivan, who wrote Time magazine’s cover story on George’s passing 10 years ago. One of the many marvels of the Beatles was that, although they all emerged from working-class Liverpool backgrounds, they were such distinct and fiercely individualistic personalities. None more so that George Harrison, who started well in the shadows and came to stand for something very large, and beautiful. This is his book.

Final and most ambitious undertaking...

THE PALE KING DAVID FOSTER WALLACE "Wallace's finest work as a novelist...A bravura performance worthy of Woolf or Joyce."—Lev Grossman, TIME The agents at the IRS Regional Examination Center in Peoria, Illinois, appear ordinary enough to newly arrived trainee David Foster Wallace. But as he immerses himself in a routine so tedious and repetitive that new employees receive boredom survival training, he learns of the extraordinary variety of personalities drawn to this strange calling. And he has arrived at a moment when forces within the IRS are plotting to eliminate even what little humanity and dignity the work still has.

DAVID FOSTER WALLACE wrote Infinite Jest and The Broom of the System and the story collections Oblivion, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, and Girl With Curious Hair. His nonfiction includes Consider the Lobster, A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, Everything and More, and This Is Water. He died in 2008.

THE PALE KING remained unfinished at the time of DAVID FOSTER WALLACE's death, but is a deeply satisfying novel that has been called "his most emotionally immediate work" by Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times. It grapples directly with ultimate questions —questions of life's meaning and of the value of work and society—through characters imagined with the interior force and generosity that were Wallace's unique gifts. Along the way it suggests a new idea of heroism and commands infinite respect for one of "the greatest American writer of [our] generation."—Esquire

In his 2008 cover story for the magazine entitled "The Genius Behind Steve: Could Operations Whiz Run The Company Someday?", he predicted that Tim Cook, then unknown, would eventually succeed Steve Jobs as CEO. GRAHAM E. FULLER is a professor of history at Simon Fraser University and a former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA. Fuller’s cover story in Foreign Policy on this topic was picked up by the the Wall Street Journal’s web site and was one of the most discussed think pieces of 2008.

What if Islam never existed? To some, it's a comforting thought: no clash of civilizations, no holy wars, no terrorists. But what if that weren't the case at all? In A WORLD WITHOUT ISLAM, Graham E. Fuller guides us along an illuminating journey through history, geopolitics, and religion to investigate whether or not Islam is indeed the cause of some of today's most emotional and important international crises. Fuller takes us from the birth of Islam to the fall of Rome to the rise and collapse of the Ottoman Empire. He examines and analyzes the roots of terrorism, the conflict in Israel, and the role of Islam in supporting and energizing the anti‐imperial struggle. Provocatively, he finds that contrary to the claims of many politicians, thinkers, theologians, and soldiers, a world without Islam might not look vastly different from what we know today. Filled with fascinating details and counterintuitive conclusions, A WORLD WITHOUT ISLAM is certain to inspire debate and reshape the way we think about Islam's relationship with the West.
