New HPU president outlines his priorities JANEL FOSTER staff writer Hawaii Pacific University’s next president says his goals during his tenure will include increasing international student enrollment; reaching out and forging stronger ties with the greater Pacific region; strengthening support for faculty research and scholarship; and finding the resources to create more scholarships and professional internships for students. In an interview with the Kalamalama Jan. 27, Dr. Geoffrey Bannister said among his chief priorities was strengthening HPU’s presence across the Pacific by recruiting more Pacific Island students through such programs as nursing, social work and marine science. Bannister, who will be on campus the week of Feb. 14 and officially begins his presidency July 1, repeated his pledge to “put students first” and said he wants, among other things, to improve classroom space on the downtown campus. Bannister told faculty in an earlier visit to Honolulu, when he was being interviewed as a finalist for the position, that he considers the study of the humanities to be the foundation of a university education. The College of Humanities and Social Services is on the downtown campus. Although such information has not been fully detailed, it has been confirmed by HPU Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. John Kearns that plans are being considered to improve student gathering space and access to student services

He was also the founding president of the Forum on Education Abroad, which focuses on overseas education. RECRUITMENT MATTERS In terms of increasing HPU’s presence in the Pacific region, Bannister said: “Last year’s freshman class brought in 41 international students. I think we can do better.
