Dear Everyone, The last four weeks have certainly been a roller coaster ride for me and I am happy to say that I am gradually finding my way around the community, school and computer system. Last week I visited the Kenepuru & Wakamarina combined Camp at Pine Valley and enjoyed a great day tramping with the children, teachers and parent helpers. A camping experience is so beneficial to the children because it is truly education outside the classroom, combining practical learning experiences with social skills. Children willingly helped in the dining area around the camp in general. Vicki and Nardia did a wonderful job in planning and running the camp programme. They certainly deserve our thanks for giving of their time and energy. It is one thing to have the children in the school context where they go home at three o'clock. It is another matter altogether, when they are on duty 24 hours per day! I must also mention the role that the parents played in this wonderful experience. They too, abandoned their other commitments to attend. I saw some wonderful moments where parents gave so much of their energy into making things happen. I can still see one dad sitting in the flying fox platform, supervising each and every keen adventurer! This week Pelorus is on camp and I hope to spend Thursday with them. The weather forecast is somewhat gloomy but we all know that the forecasters can get it wrong. Have a great week. Kind regards, Tony

Christmas is coming...

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM OUR LSM

Over the last months the Board and Staff have undertaken a series of developmental workshops with Catriona Dempsey, Student Achievement Function Practitioner. The nature of the workshops has been to examine our current practices and form a ‘Change and Improvement Plan’. These sessions have been very beneficial and we have now moved to a more advanced stage in our planning for next year. With time at a premium, we now need to schedule a large block of time to come up with our finalised plan. The Board has supported a request to hold this session on Friday 24 th November from 1:00pm. We plan to close the school at 12:45 and ask that children be able to go home at this time. We are conscious that there are students who travel home by bus and that some families may have difficulties in arranging supervision at home. We will process these issues over the next week or so. Everyone in our Havelock School community will benefit from the planning we have undertaken and we ask that you support us if you possibly can. Kind regards, Janet Kelly

STOP PRESS! Bus arrangements have been made. The bus will be at school at 12:45 to take children home.

Wakamarina has incorporated ‘colouring-in’ as part of our daily routine. Research has shown there is a link between colouring-in and the development of the fine motor skills necessary for accurate letter formation, neat handwriting and attention to finer detail.

Snippets from the Pine Valley Camp

Links to Feuerstein are also evident as the students must plan their use of colour to attain the best effect as well as their pride in displaying a colourful piece of art.
