Ask us here at Greengate what one of our biggest sources of inspiration is, and we’ll sing “ICE CREAM!!!” in unison. And not just in Summer, and certainly not any ice cream. For Hansens is a family-run ice cream maker here in Denmark which has spanned four generations and blossoms happily, despite being such a little flower in a big field. The reason why is easy to see – and taste. The Hansen family has a loyal fanbase like no other, because they adhere lovingly to their traditional recipes and methods, and always put quality before profit, Indeed, there are a few who have been fans for some ninety years now! So it is no coincidence that we at Greengate are such admirers of the Hansens’ way, especially now that we have our second generation of family and friends helping us to blossom too. And, let’s face it, it’s not every day we get to take charge of an ice cream van in the name of research and inspiration! 4
Imagine it! It can’t be just us who had the childhood dream of scooting around in their very own ice cream van, being able to serve up fresh cones to friends and delighted strangers alike? And even now, the distant jingle-jangle tones of a van’s siren wafting though the summer breeze is enough to send one all the way back to those endless days. A hopeful look at mom, who (yippee!) responds by proffering the magic coins, sending a clutch of ecstatic kids skippety-hopping down the road to fetch their treat. And who says dreams can’t come true? While we may now prefer a blueberry milkshake over a dripping cone drenched with red syrup, it’s a thrill to don the Greengate aprons and see who drops by for a sip and a smile.
