All of these gentlemen were in the twilight of their careers. Orvis Ford and Keeney were pushing 80; Fields was in his mid 70s. Kenneth Ford was in his lateKenneth80s. wanted a high production small log mill that would produce studs as well as longer export metric lumber for Japan. As they turned concept into reality, Kenneth, Orvis and Keeney traveled to several mills, but focused on Stimson Lumber’s mill in Forest Grove, Ore.; that’s because Stimson was running a stud mill with a sharp chain feeding a bandmill, which had started up in the 1980s, designed and engineered by none other than Keeney, who was working for Stimson then.

cousin Orvis Ford would serve as project manager. Orvis had worked at Roseburg from the 1950s into the early 1980s, sometimes as a plant manager, before “retiring” and continuing to consult with other mill companies, before coming back to Roseburg.

Kenneth Ford died in February 1997 at age 88. The mill started up a year later and in another year was averaging in excess of 250MBF per shift and reaching 350MBF—with a Coe and Keeney sharp chain, 6 ft. USNR twin band and Coe chipping heads, Coe optimized gang-edger and another Coe optimized edger, twin USNR horizontal resaw, USNR trimmer and USNR 21 bin sorter and stacker, with Douglas fir logs averaging 8.5 in. diameter.

Especially when you consider that 25 years ago, Kenneth Ford, who built Roseburg’s wood products Western empire from scratch, had visualized one last sawmill project, a stud mill, and he had invited some pretty acclaimed people to help him put it together. Ford had built and started up a sawmill at Dillard in the midKenneth’s1940s.

The Dillard project required lowering some of the floor and moving floor beams around. But before any machinery was put in place, and while remodeling of the building was still going on, Kenneth was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “He came in one morning and said I’ve got cancer and I’m not going to live very long,” Keeney once recalled. “I was hoping he would live until he got the thing running. He was really into it. But he didn’t make it. When it started up I was disappointed because he wasn’t there.”

Fred Fields was called upon to supply the sawmill machinery through his company, Coe Manufacturing. Again, no surprise, as Fields and Coe had worked with Ford and Roseburg for years, especially supplying machinery to Roseburg’s plywood operations.

This writer was fortunate to visit the mill when it hit its stride in early 1999, and talk to the likes of Orvis Ford, Keeney and Fields. But the person most prevalent in the mill wasn’t even there, Kenneth Ford. By the way, Orvis, Keeney and Fields all died basically within weeks of each other during November 2011 to January 2012, all having lived long and full lives.

The existing Mobile sawmill was operated by Gulf Lumber and the Stimpson family for many years, before Gulf Lumber merged with Scotch Lumber, which subsequently sold to Canfor.

COLLINS NAMES INSKO

Canfor Corp. plans to invest $210 million USD to build a state-of-the-art sawmill at a greenfield site in southern Alabama, reportedly north of Mobile in the community of Axis along Highway 43.The sawmill will have an annual production capacity of 250MMBF on a twoshift basis and will provide a modern work environment for approximately 130 people who will be employed directly, in addition to sup-porting significant indirect jobs. In alignment with the company’s sustainability goals and decarbonization targets, the facility design includes investment in a biomass-fueled lumber drying system. Startup of the facility is anticipated in the third quarter of 2024.

The new facility will replace the existing operation in Mobile. Following the construction and startup of the new facility, an orderly wind down of the Mobile operation will be undertaken. All current employees will have the opportunity to remain with the company.

Insko’s manufacturing experience spans plywood, composite panels, lumber, and laminated beams. He has also worked extensively in forest policy and management, log and fiber procurement, sales and finance. He is currently a commissioner on the Oregon Business Development Commission and previously served two terms on the Oregon Board of Forestry.

Calvert is one of the oldest glulam manufactures in the U.S. and has more than 60 years of experience producing high quality glulam beams in multiple species, including Douglas fir, southern yellow pine and yellow cedar, for industrial, commercial and residential projects around the world. Calvert has manufacturing facilities in Washougal, Wash. and Vancouver, Wash. with a combined annual glulam capacity of approximately 35MMBF on a two shift basis. Calvert’s operations employ 60 and produced 13MMBF of glulam in 2021 on a single shift basis.

WESTERN FP EYES MASS TIMBER BIZ Western Forest Products Inc. announced that a wholly owned subsidiary of Western has entered into an agreement to acquire certain assets of Calvert Company, Inc. located in Washington State for US$12 million.

Softwood Lumber Board published its 2022 Q1 Report, which recaps key SLB progress points in continuing to break down barriers in positioning wood as an economic, biophilic, and sustainable material, based on credible environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data and reporting. The SLB, in partnership with its funded programs—the American Wood Council (AWC), Think Wood, and WoodWorks—are making a concerted effort to provide education around the use of wood products for their climate benefits, increase timber usage, and capitalize on emerging construction trends.

HIT owns, among other things, 100% of a timber processing and value-add pallet production facility in Torgau, Germany and a wood processing facility in Dahlen, Germany that produces garden products.

Canfor President and CEO Don Kayne commented, “Despite the pressures on North American lumber market fundamentals this was a strong quarter for our lumber business, as our results continue to far exceed pre-pandemic levels and we continue to capitalize on our global diversification strategy. In our North American operations, ongoing global supply chain constraints resulted in the difficult decision to reduce operating schedules at our Western Canadian sawmills during the second quarter and into the summer months.

About 10 acres of the site will be used for buildings and processing facilities with the rest for log storage. The new plant will include the sawmill building and rough lumber sorter, dry kilns, and a planer mill and sorter to finish lumber for shipping. In total, the buildings will cover 25,000 sq. ft. Annual production is expected to be 50MMBF.

“This project came about because there was no reasonable market for salvage logs and thinnings from the Tahoe Basin or from the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest,” says Jon Shinn, CEO of TFP. “A local sawmill is one of the critical missing links in beginning to address forest health and resilience, not to mention critical post-fire cleanup efforts from catastrophes like the Caldor Fire.”

INCOME WAS DOWN, BUT STILL STRONG For the second quarter of 2022, Canfor reported operating income of $531.6 million (Can), down $210.3 million from the operating income of $741.9 million reported for the first quarter of 2022, largely reflecting lower lumber segment earnings following the strong earnings in the previous quarter, offset to a degree by improved pulp and paper segment results.

NEW SAWMILL WILL PROCESS SALVAGE LOGS

Northern Nevada and California were severely impacted by wildfires, which were fueled because forests have not been thinned, cleared or maintained for almost three decades, according to Washoe Tribe. Initially, TFP plans on processing mostly large fire salvage logs removed from the recent Caldor Wildfire, but eventually they plan to also add a small log line to effectively process thinnings, which hopefully will help to reduce the number of wildfires in the area.

Logs will be processed into a wide range of products, including dry-surfaced 2 in. construction lumber, timbers, fence posts and landscape products from wildfire damage, and boards and “factory” lumber for windows from the pine. Additionally, bark will be sold for landscaping and other uses, chips and sawdust will be sold to agricultural end-users and to power plants, while planer shavings will go for animal bedding.

Tahoe Forest Products (TFP), in a partnership with Washoe Development Corp., an affiliate of Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, announced they have leased 37.2 acres and plan to build the first major sawmill in the region in decades near Carson City. Salvage logs have been purchased and a log deck is visible at the site.

Weyerhaeuser reported second quarter net earnings of $788 million on net sales of $3 billion, compared to net earnings of $1 billion on net sales of $3.1 billion for the same period last year and net earnings of $771 million for the first quarter of 2022.

Our financial position is exceptionally strong, and we remain committed to delivering operational excellence across our unmatched portfolio of assets.” With regard to the timberland business, In the West, fee harvest volumes were moderately lower than the first quarter due to unseasonably wet weather. Domestic sales realizations were moderately lower and per unit log and haul costs were significantly higher as harvesting operations transitioned to higher elevation units. Export sales realizations were moderately higher and export sales volumes were significantly higher, driven by strong demand in Japan. In the South, sales realizations for sawlogs and fiber logs were slightly higher, and fee harvest volumes increased moderately. Per unit log and haul costs were significantly higher, primarily due to fuel-related costs. Forestry and road costs in the West and South were seasonally higher.

North American market fundamentals experienced downward pressure principally driven by the impact of elevated interest rates and rising inflation. These economic headwinds weighed on lumber market demand in the current period, prompting a modest decline in new home construction activity in the U.S., particularly for single-family units. Decreased demand combined with relatively steady inventory levels in the supply chain resulted in a significant drop in lumberLookingprices.ahead, global lumber market fundamentals are anticipated to be relatively solid through the third quarter of 2022. New home construction activity in North America is projected to weaken in the wake of high mortgage rates and decreasing housing affordability, particularly for first-time homebuyers, while activity in the repair and remodeling sector is estimated to be steady. Offshore lumber demand in Asia is anticipated to face continued downward pressure in the third quarter as high inventory levels in the region continue to exceed consumption. Results in the third quarter are anticipated to reflect the continuation of reduced operating schedules across the company’s Western Canadian sawmills.

Weyerhaeuser anticipates third quarter earnings will be lower than second quarter 2022. In the West, the company expects comparable fee harvest volumes and significantly lower sales volumes due to export. Sales realizations are expected to be moderately lower, and per unit log and haul costs are expected to be lower. IDAHO PLANTSPROJECTSEEDLINGS

Converting an all-but-dead timberland at risk of significant wildfire into a strong future forest is a massive undertaking, but the Idaho Dept. of Lands (IDL) is one step closer to achieving that in the Packer John State Forest. This spring 610,300 seedlings were planted over nearly 2,000 acres. Now those baby trees are growing thanks to a nearly $300,000 grant from the Arbor Day Foundation.AmajorDouglas fir tussock moth infestation peaked in Packer John in 2019 and was the final blow to the forest’s health after several years of drought and previous insect damage. This was also devastating for Idaho public schools, as these schools are the owners/beneficiaries of the land and the funding grown out of timber. The forest was made up mainly of Douglas fir, subalpine fir, and grand fir, which are susceptible to tussock moth damage. With that in mind, the IDL was quick to sell the damaged timber for wood products in what are called salvage sales. That made it possible to get as much value out of the trees as possible, as well as remove the significant wildfire risk. All trees within the salvage sale areas were harvested except for ponderosa pine and spruce trees, which are not preferred by tussock moth. Those species make up a small percentage of trees within the harvest areas, leaving a mostly blank canvas for a new forest. The new trees will be more ponderosa pine and western“Whatlarch.weare doing is very unique because the vulnerable trees are gone and will be replaced,” says Tyler Nelson, Idaho Dept. of Lands Forest Management Program Manager. “It will take time for these trees to grow, but as they do, they will hold strong against the insects and disease which are natural to these areas, but don’t feed off of the new trees.”Agrant from the Arbor Day Foundation totaling $296,600 covered the cost of the more than 600,000 trees. IDL was selected for the grant because of the unique nature of the project, which is to ensure that land impacted by the tussock moth outbreak can be restored to a healthy and functional forest by essentially starting over with tree species better adapted to the site.

A roadbuilding contractor working on an easement road across state land to a private tract scheduled for harvest by Humboldt Redwood Co. had an excavator destroyed by the flare incident. No one witnessed the act, but just prior to the fire individual protesters were spotted in the area, which had seen several protests and demonstrations over the years.The fire also resulted in the release of 80 gallons of diesel onto the site that now has to be remediated, not to mention the luck that responders were nearby and able to ensure the blaze didn’t spread into the surrounding forest. No group has taken responsibility for the act, and CalFire officials are treating it as an arson investigation.

The TRP calls for traditional ground-based logging systems for about twothirds of the work. The TRP is expected to generate $2.28 million in revenue after subtracting costs of logging, hauling and roadwork, which will help fund the restoration treatments, according to FS officials.

ARSONIST ACT DESTROYS MACHINE Authorities are still investigating an environmentally damaging and potentially disastrous fire in early August after a protester allegedly tossed a road flare under an excavator near an area in Humboldt County in northern California that has been the focal point of anti-logging demonstrations and protests.

Forest health operations should begin next year following final approval in late July of the Twisp Restoration Project (TRP) on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in north central Washington. The project seeks to improve forest health and wildfire resistance across 24,000 acres, focusing on the wildlandurban interface and ensuring a network of safe and efficient roads for travel and evacuation.TheTRP includes treatments on 550 acres of private land and 40 acres of U.S. Bureau of Land Management lands. The project size was reduced by more than half after fire activity during the planningProjectstages.scope includes harvest of 5054MMBF across 8,100 acres, roughly 75% Douglas fir, followed by ponderosa pine. In addition, PCT operations on almost 14,000 acres will target stems under 10 in., leaving 50-75 trees per acre. Four years later a reengineered and rebuilt end-dogging system with related breakdown equipment was added. The state-ofthe-art sawmill facility broke the 400MMBF production mark in late 2013.

“We used to hire ‘sawmill people,’” says Dillard Lumber Operations Manager Marshall Ledbetter. “Now, we hire leaders and train them to do the job and give them what they need to do it.”

The original flat-roof concrete kilns received new peaked roofs in 2011 to inLog yard holds up to 20MMBF and merchandising line feeds sawmill and adjacent plywood plant.

● In 2014-2015 several key investments were made, the first in July 2014 by adding a new USNR sawmill stacker that utilizes the MillTrak camera control system to monitor backlog and overall lumber flow. The system can lay up to 19 courses/minute while automating stick placement and replaced an older stacker that was running full speed just to keep up.

Some of the mill’s most recent equipment and system upgrades include:

● In 2019 the mill added its third American Wood Dryers (AWD) 84 ft. double-track kiln, this one with the Thermo-Vent feature that reduces moisture and also gets the kiln up to temp quicker and helps hold it there, Ledbetter says. Roseburg also took the opportunity to make several key upgrades to its overall drying capacity, which includes eight older concrete USNR kilns and three AWD double track aluminum kilns.

Timber Processing last visited in 2005 after the major upgrade, Roseburg has pursued a compelling strategy of maintaining sawing technology and system upgrades along with investments in technology that empowers team members and helps build a stronger teamwork culture.

Today, the dual-line design and much of Roseburg’s Dillard Lumber mill flow remains, but the level of technology and overall capacity surrounding and supporting the mill are light years ahead of Mr. Ford’s time. With the facility now capable of breaking 500MMBF in annual production of 8-, 9- and 10-ft. studs among the unprecedented challenges of a pandemic that helped create the highest lumber prices ever, Mr. Ford would no doubt be impressed with what his legacy hasSincewrought.

● The #2 board edger received an optimization upgrade in 2021, with a new Goldeneye scanning and optimization package from MiCrotec. The edger’s older system was running on a PC and on its last leg with frequent reboots and no backup. The new Goldeneye provides a much denser scanning field and better productivity, Ledbetter says, noting better overall recovery and less waste on sideboard processing. “We also have a lot more support, and after we tweaked a few things it’s running great.”

crease air flow, as well as new crossshaft fans that improve air circulation among lumber charges. Also in 2019, the mill added the SDS wireless Kiln Scout moisture content detection system, integrated across all three AWD kilns.

Altogether, the improvements have significantly lowered steam requirements and costs while reducing drying times by almost half. “We’re now drying more with less,” says Steve Walker, dry end areaSeparatingcoordinator.heartwood from sapwood in the sawmill also boosts drying operations, with the aid of Atlas Density Graders, with weigh bridges installed just upstream of the sorter infeed. Medium and light moisture content boards are routed to the newer AWD kilns. The moisture sort at the sawmill is a key part of reducing drying times and getting the right wood to the most efficient kilns, Walker says. “In addition to reducing drying time the sort helps us tighten up deviation and also improve overall drying quality.”

In July 2021, the mill implemented a new preventive maintenance system where operators can put in work requests, get feedback, make sure PMs are getting done and a whole lot more.

“If you weren’t an iPhone user before, you are now,” says Mike Lawless, green end area coordinator, adding that “We’re also using it to help build the culture as well, empower people to raise concerns, and team members are also getting communications and can see how millwrights and maintenance personnel are responding. It helps keep the culture positive.”

In mid 2020, the mill had begun using iPads to implement its CMMS; by July 2021 all maintenance personnel were using iPads and were trained in a structured program to take time daily to respond to and validate requests and approvals for work, and if not report why. The old paper-based maintenance system was prone to having issues slip, Lawless remembers. “But now things aren’t falling through the cracks, and if a request is rejected, (the operator) knows when and why.”

The mill also added an operator metrics dashboard module that provides real time data and performance information for each machine, one for each operator who was logged in and running it. The report shows production as well as any downtime and why. “Our team members want to know what it takes to win, and what a good day looks like— and you can’t over-communicate that,” Ledbetter says.

Another example is monitoring bearing vibration and temperatures at the bandmills, looking to spot issues before they become failures as part of an inhouse developed saw deviation monitoring system that was implemented eight years ago.

Mill technical personnel are also using the system as a diagnostic tool: One example is monitoring motor amperages to head off any problems before they become failures, such as identifying motors that are pulling incorrect amperages but still running. It’s taking a while to set it up since amperages vary so widely, but the idea is to greatly reduce emergency repairs while becoming more preventive overall.

downtime data and overall performance of any machine a given team member may have logged in to. It helps in training, tracking downtime and boosting team member performance, Lawless says. “People want to know where they stand at the end of the day, and everyone can see what we’re measuring.”

Ledbetter says continually building and occasionally rebuilding teams is a sign of the times now, compared to the traditional seniority-based system that rewarded time spent and also provided ready replacements. Those “sawmill people” are harder to find, and developing leaders is a priority. “Now we are looking for leaders who can be servants and support the people who drive the mill,” he adds.

The Dillard Lumber division cuts all Douglas fir, and specs a log down to 5 in. small end and up to 22 in. large side. The log yard holds up to 20MMBF if needed. A Wagner L90 log handler and Caterpillar 988 wheel loader unload trucks and feed two debarkers.

Logs entering the sharp chain are tamped on and fed through a set of chip heads (Iggesund) and USNR twin band.

Cants flow to an 8 in. USNR curve-sawing gang and sideboards go to a Lico board edger. Multiples are routed to a USNR horizontal resaw that takes material from both lines. Logs processed on the end-dogger line are fed to a USNR quad band, with cants going to a USNR vertical shape sawing gang and sideboards going to the USNR edger with recent Goldeneye optimization upgrade. Multiples are routed to the resaw.

The mill is in the process of adding double tracks to the older block kilns to increase throughput and reduce lumber handling requirements.

Lumber drying is accomplished with the three newer AWD aluminum kilns and the older yet refurbished USNR kilns. Two of the AWD kilns run with AWD Drystar controls; one runs R&L Engineering kiln controls. The block kilns run with USNR Kiln Boss controls.

The two-line planer mill features two Stetson-Ross planers feeding their respective sorters and stackers, though the #1 planer line gets most of the wood. “This allows us the ability to run different products on the same shift, and also four-inch material if needed,” Walker says. A Si-Cam board measuring system monitors board width at planer outfeed and shuts the system down if more than two consecutive boards are off-size. Boards hit a landing table and pass by a manual grader before going through the Comact GradeEx lumber grader.

Both the sharp chain and end-dogger lines have their respective trimmers and sorter-stacker systems. The two sorters are 25 and 28 bins, respectively, and run a combined 300 lugs/minute (130 and 170). The #1 line features the new camera-controlled USNR stacker and also handles 1 in. and 4 in. material if needed. Transfers allow the flow to be swapped if one of the stackers goes down.

Our cover story in the May issue was the renovation of the former Anderson-Tully hardwood sawmill at Vicksburg, Miss. into a high production southern yellow pine sawmill by Vicksburg Forest Products. It was no small task to say the least. And the ownership entity, Claw Forestry, about the same time that the Vicksburg mill started hitting its stride, announced it is building a greenfield SYP mill in Gloster, Miss., and followed up that announcement with another one where its Southeastern Timber Products operation in Ackerman, Miss. is teaming with Tolko Industries on a major investment and production expansion of the Ackerman sawmill. We’re not sure those projects will be as great a challenge and accomplishment as the Vicksburg conversion was, which is why we feel the Vicksburg mill deserves a second look, with some photos not published with the original article in the May issue. Kiln enclosures, both package and track types, are designed for each application and can be all-aluminum structures with ALCLAD aluminum panel surfaces and R20 insulation or all-stainless steel in special cases.

Continuous kilns are typically a combination of aluminum construction in the cold sections and steel in the hot section for economy of material costs. The Continuous Dry Kiln (CDK) design has become especially prevalent in the southern yellow pine industry. This design provides increased throughput and higher efficiency by taking advantage of both the stored heat in the lumber and the chamber humidity to preheat the entering lumber while conditioning the exiting product.

Over the years, many customers in the Portland show territory have put their trust in our equipment, and often more than once, such as Sierra Pacific, Idaho Forest Group, Mercer, Interfor, Hampton, WKO, RSG, North Fork and many more.

Cutting only 500 logs per day and opening the log on only two sides could potentially increase the number of lines saved by 1000 lines per day. This time-savings equates to a substantial production increase with no loss of recovery. In addition, the machine can act as a “reman” machine for off thickness lumber either located directly behind the edger to correct thickness issues created by upstream sawing centers, or to reprocess lumber rejected by the trimmer due to thickness variations outside of normal acceptable limits. With a small footprint and simple infeed and outfeed requirements, the machine can generally be installed in the existing production flow with minimal modifications to the mill floor and existing equipment at a substantially lower cost than other modifications such as a horizontal resaw to accomplish these tasks.

Over the past three decades, Gilbert has striven to be a first-class world leader in the planer mill industry. Since its first installations in Quebec in the 1990s, Gilbert has succeeded in installing more than 200 planer and upgrade projects worldwide. In 2002, Gilbert participated in the Portland show in Oregon. This was the first time Gilbert visited the West Coast with its planer equipment. LogProfitability runs require a single user operation to select the log sources to be processed in the run, after which the analysis for all sources is completed in a single system run. The efficiency of the process frees up the user’s time to be spent analyzing run results, rather than making the runs.

The boiler vessel in each of these systems is a two pass hybrid design incorporating a water-tubed boiler type water membrane and a two-pass fire tube scotch marine vessel. These boilers’ advantages over standard water tube boilers include a much larger steam disengagement area providing high quality steam, larger steam storage capability for quicker response to sudden steam demand, and much larger thermal storage that provides fast demand response times and safer operation. These models are particularly suitable for heating applications in lumber dry kilns, veneer log vats, veneer dryers, greenhouses, factories, schools and commercial buildings.

The First Nations owned Meadow Lake Tribal Council Bioenergy Centre has started their ambitious project of generating carbon-neutral green power by building a 6.6 MW power generation system that is fueled primarily by sawmill biomass residuals. This for Saskatchewan Canada first-of-its-kind green energy biomass project will combine environmental improvement with thermal efficiency, while improving the economic outcome for this nine-member First Nations council. Heat loss requires the kiln to use more energy to bring the chamber back to temperature, as well as causes delays in the schedule resulting in added drying time. Nyle believes that their Heat Recovery Vents, or HRV, can become a valuable addition to any kiln. The vent utilizes the heat being vented from the kiln to warm the incoming air, minimizing the need for “reheating,” reducing the overall fuel consumption and increasing overall production quality. These cameras were mounted beside conveyor belts which had hard rock tunneling waste transported at high speed past the camera. It was not uncommon for small and medium sized rocks to hit these cameras on the lens and body. They stood up to this punishment 24-7—and the only thing replaced occasionally was the protective glass on the camera enclosure.

Booth: 151 OPTIMIL Optimil’s canter-profiler log breakdown system has a feed section that consists of a heavy duty auto rotation conveyor, a log turner and a skewing-slewing-tilting infeed. Our extended (DLI) length infeed precisely positions the log to achieve maximum yield, as calculated by our optimization software. Logs are fed through the infeed system on a pneumatically tensioned, high-speed roller chain and work in conjunction with the coupled overhead hold-down rolls to maintain control of all log sizes and to ensure accurate log transport. In order to pre-position spiked rolls and control the log as it enters the bottom head chipping assembly or sharp chain system, linear positioners are seamlessly incorporated along the line. The two-sided canter systems, typically used in conjunction with secondary horizontal curve-sawing systems, use conical side heads to produce two-sided cants in which logs feed through on a sharp chain. These conical disc chipping heads are positioned on the log 30 degrees sideways, incorporating low friction linear bearings to produce high quality chips and achieve optimum accuracy. Our patented non-rotating anvil provides superior log guiding and minimum deviation throughout the chipping section.

Our four-sided canter utilizes drum type heads and a mini spline guiding to offer feed rates of 750 FPM while maintaining chip quality. Low friction linear bearings are used to achieve fast accurate sets on the cutting tool and longer wear life. The new four-sided canters have been developed to promote dust and chip containment. We have added more feed rolls to ensure better control through the entire system and all chip heads and feed roll are driven by U joint drive shafts and operated through remote Rex gear boxes. Side board profilers can be added to both two- and four-sided canters to help eliminate the load at the board edger system. These heads are positioned by the optimized solution sent by the scanner located in the extended length (DLI) system. The heads are fully adjustable to machine the desired board on either or both sides on the center cant. The side board solution can be skewed up or down the side of the cant.

The new Balance Cut saw box features a unique method of setting the saws to balance the depth of the cut on cants being processed, which in turn allows for an increased output. The Optimil system connects the upper and lower saws and shifts both vertically at the same time. The re-positioning of the saw guides decreases the feed roll center, enabling better control of the cants as they are processed.

For example Planetworks Consulting Corp. engineer Colin Savage chose the CCO2 as the video monitoring solution for the $800 million SeymourCapilano Twin T, a two 3.8 m wide, 7.1 kilometer long tunnel project bored under Grouse and Fromme mountains for water infrastructure enhancement. Savage said: “I would challenge others to find a harsher environment than a tunnel boring machine. We used cameras at multiple locations along the TBM to view progress and as indicators for material conveyance.”

The initial idea was to “break down” the machine frame into pieces to facilitate log handling, enabling customers to modify debarkers flexibly as their needs changed. By continuing the machine frame with an additional frame piece, it is easy to add to the machine; for example, a second debarking rotor or a butt-end reducing rotor. As a result of this design development Valon Kone has introduced two completely new types of modular machine frames—the VK5000 and the VK8000.

Valmatics 4.0 means modern TC continuous kiln functions can be put to full use. All the kiln operator needs to know is the incoming and desired outcoming moisture content—the system does the rest. This frees up time for more important operations such as saw planning, quality control and sampling.

It is possible to install all the debarking rotors manufactured by Valon Kone to the new machine frames VK5000 and VK8000. The VK5000 frame modules are designed for hydraulic rotors 480 and 620 and Air Seal rotors 5044 and 5056. The VK8000 frame modules are designed for hydraulic rotors 480, 620 and 820 and Air Seal rotors 5056, 5068 and 5092. Valon Kone manufactures feedroll modules equipped either with two or four feedrolls. As VK debarkers are always built according customer specifications, feedrolls are engineered according to the length and quality features of the log. This same flexibility is reflected in the selection of critical components for power transmission in the Basic or Heavy Duty equipment category. For high feed speeds, the Heavy Duty category is always equipped with an active hydraulic system. A simpler, closed circuit hydraulic system can be used for lower feed speeds.

Cleereman Controls has sold more than 167 different systems since coming to market in 2019. Cleereman Controls offers optimized carriage and edger lines along with debarker, trimmer, and stave controls.Cleereman says its carriage and edger optimized lines are seeing 8%-10% gains in yield versus non-optimized lines.

Jon Ritcher of Shamco Lumber in Iron River Mich. both replaced existing manual edgers with Cleereman optimized edgers. Both of these mills average more than 40MBF feet per day with Cleereman optimized carriage lines. They chose Cleereman for the edger because Cleereman is not only close by, but provides great customer service after the sale.
