From the Editor

Making the Most of a New Year It’s no big secret that I’ve been exploring Universal Laws and many of the teachings of A Course In Miracles, this year. If you’ve also been exploring its teachings, you may already be aware that it teaches us that much of our surroundings, the conditions and circumstances of our lives, and even the people we interact with, mean nothing. They are nothing more than an illusion. They are entirely influenced by our thoughts and deepest-held emotions. Most of all, they are easily changed if only we are willing to put the work in to change the emotions and fears from which they take their roots. People who interact with us bring with them spiritual lessons for our development as well as elements of our own psyche, much like a mirror, held up for our own, literal, reflection and consideration. 2014 presents a time of a new moon - a new moon on a new year’s day. How absolutely timely. The best thing about anything new (whether it be a moon, a job, a relationship or an entire year) is the natural energetic boost you receive, simply by hearing of the news. It can set your day, your week, and even a year off to a good start. I like to use the New Year as a time for setting my coaching clients up with the right strategic MIND MAP - that’s right, programming your mind to know what you want so you can go out there and GET IT. 14 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Life’s not a dress rehearsal. It’s not a maze and you are not a mouse. Plan it. “Michelle, how do I plan a whole year when I don’t know what opportunities may present themselves?!” I get that one a lot. I’m not saying you should plan it in any grand level of detail. You wouldn’t want to live life that way, anyway. But if you coast through the year, and you do this every year, is it any wonder that perhaps you have yet to achieve happiness, a longheld goal, or simply seen your passions become your livelihood? Now, I know not all of us celebrate the New Year, but I encourage you to do ONE thing for yourself to get 2014 started right. It’s an easy task, if you give it a try and it really will help you find the clarity you’re seeking in your professional life, and in your personal life. I’d like to encourage you to write out the things that went well for you in 2013, the things you forgot or failed at, and the lessons you’ve taken away. Now list out the things that gave you joy. What did you enjoy? What gave you validation and that feeling of achievement? What did you miss but wish you did? Instead of resolutions, make a list of primal, deep wants which have yet to have manifested in your life and feel those feelings, just as though you had the feeling already in your life. Pursue opportunities, make decisions and goal lists, and most of all, include and exclude relationships on those feelings and you cannot go wrong. That is your 2014. Remember, your life is blooming all around you. Take notice of your growth, remarking as your beautiful petals spread and bloom, reaching for the sun.

Follow The Goddess’s Million Dollar Dream

Do you have a passion you want to share with the world and get paid for it? Are you following your dreams to get there? These are but a few questions you can ask yourself. Leonie’s life passion is to teach you how you can achieve your goals and be successful in your own business.

By Ann Pissard 16 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Leonie Dawson

I’ve only recently met Leonie through her high energy website, her many inspirational YouTube videos and travelling alongside her in her new “Blogging Biz Star Workbook.” You too, can be connected to her in her many different career experiences in her life journey, and feel you could succeed in your life and know the riches in life, not only in dollar amount, but in a connection of souls! Leonie’s dreams of success had some challenges and obstacles. Learn how she handled her challenges with triumphs, just by believing she had something so big to offer the world, and triumphed in her attempt. My hope is that you find your own valuable information that she offers to advance your path and follow your dreams, just as she was able to. Maybe she will be able to shorten your path getting there. It is my pleasure to share Leonie’s interview with you, in hopes you will find her a gentle and fun loving ‘soul woman’ who genuinely wants you to succeed, too.

Let’s Get Started! I’m glad that you are available to give us some of your valuable time, especially with a new baby coming. How exciting! Please tell us a little about who you are and where you’re from, so our readers have a sense of your passionate personality. Thank you so much! Delighted and honoured to be a part of Hat Trick! I’m Leonie. I’m a hippy soulpreneur philanthropist. I’m an addict of books, art and spirit. I’m the CEO of a business that’s close to cracking 7 figures a year. I live in the rainforest with my 18 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

hunky love, our mermaid daughter and our puppies. We’re a multigenerational household - my parents-in-law moved into our granny flat (which is AWESOME! HEYO! BABYSITTERS!) We’re just a

“I got asked by loads of others how I’d managed to create a six figure business doing what I was doing. So I started helping people know how to do that too.” couple of months away from welcoming our second daughter into our family. And I am steadfastly and deeply into work/life balance I only work about 15 hours a week. I totally believe in living my soul purpose through my business and through having a thriving life as well. Oh and I totally wanna be as huge in philanthropy as Bill Gates. Can you give the reader a short timeline of your work experience, before finally being able to live out your dream? What was your motivation to keep going? I was uber multi-passionate. I had no idea what I wanted to do - I just knew I was a creative soul, and I wanted to change the world. So I studied a butt-tonne of subjects I was interested in at university. I took a bunch of jobs and got to learn some really practical skills which ended up becoming massively helpful (i.e. being a legal secretary and financial administrator). Eventually I fell into being an editor at business.gov.au, the Australian Government’s website for businesses. And at the same time I started building my soul/creative business - selling art, running retreats, doing oracle card readings and healings. Eventually I started running online creativity and spirituality programs and meditations. After I got to six figures a year doing that, I quit my editing job. And I got asked by loads of others how I’d managed to create a six figure business doing what I was doing. So I started

helping people know how to do that too. It all just evolved beautifully. Honestly, there were no missteps. Sure, there were some really boring moments in cubicles when I craved doing something else. But it was just impetus to drive me forward and make sure it worked. And every job, every subject studied, every person I crossed added to that gorgeous tapestry of my life which ended up making my business even more deeper and more powerful. Today most women could not even imagine their passion, dreams, and family in one breath. Where do you find the balance for family, especially with a new baby on the way, whilst running your successful business? I didn’t have a choice but to imagine it that way. I quit my editing job when I gave birth to my daughter. I was so incredibly determined that my family would create a life that would resonate for us - that we would do what we wanted, not what everyone else thought was normal. I committed to making sure my business would support my family, asked my husband to quit his job, and we moved across the country to tropical paradise together. I’m determined that I get lots of time with my beautiful family. We only have this time once. And at the same time, I’m not content to just do that. I still want to live my passions and my soul purpose. So everyday I focus like a mofo, and I get done what needs doing to move my business forward in the shortest amount of time possible. I’ve created a great support team. We have great systems and procedures set up. Consequently, my business can keep going without me all the time. I’ve been ill with a pregnancy illness for the last six months and have been in and out of hospital. I really just haven’t been able to function and work like I usually do. But my business has continued to thrive. And that’s a real testament to having a good team, having 20 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

good systems in place, and getting a good business model set up. I really want women to know that YES it IS possible. That business doesn’t have to look like giving up the rest of your life. It can work together. And it can still be wonderously abundant. What fears or obstacles do you feel may have held you back in the beginning, and how did you overcome these to keep you on your path? At the very beginning I was so afraid that I’d never be able to actually quit my job. I just couldn’t work out a way how to make it possible for me to earn enough money doing what I loved. But I didn’t give up. I realised in that moment that other people were doing it, and so they must just know something I didn’t know. They must know business and marketing stuff that I didn’t know. So I committed myself to learning what works, and I did. And everything changed incredibly quickly from there. Did you find that you had your family and friends’ support? How important is having support? To be honest - not really. And that’s okay. Because the most important thing in the world is for you to be a #1 cheerleader of yourself. Be your own coach and believer. My hunky love and my friends and family - sure, they love me and want my dreams to come true. But they couldn’t see the vision I had. I just had to go ahead and do it. When you become a monk to your dreams, you are so in love with making them come true that it doesn’t matter if it’s just you doing it. Because you’re doing it with your own best friend in the world - yourself. And that’s a bloody glorious thing! What is your biggest distraction when trying to concentrate on the task at hand, and how do you over come that? 22 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Ha! I’m sure 98% of people have this problem: The Internet. How I handle it: Very simply. I use the Self Control App, and turn off access to any website which wastes my time. I focus, and get my important stuff done. In the beginning of your journey, how did you handle any negativity from others, and how were you influenced to set positive intentions? I’m still learning how to handle negativity to be honest! Here’s what works for me: not getting too caught up with what others think of me. Turning up and doing the very best I can every single day. Putting my blinkers on and concentrating on what I am supposed to be doing. I set very clear happy intentions about how I want to experience my business, how I want my team to experience it, my clients... I want the energy to be beautiful! And because I’m a giant hippy woo-woo, I use intuitive healers and kinesiologists to help me clear any negativity from my business. I can relate to only asking for what I need, but when we are faithful in asking for what we need, blessings flow into what our heart’s desire want. Do you agree? Absolutely. Learning how to communicate your needs is a really important lesson for humans. And also knowing that it’s okay when someone isn’t able to meet them. And that you can find other ways for those needs to be met. You mentioned on your website about having spiritual gifts. Can you please expand on this? I believe everyone has spiritual gifts - that we are each born with Leonie Dawson: Follow The Goddess’s Million Dollar Dream •

wisdom and talents that can help and heal the world. For me, I’m gifted at channelling wisdom, manifesting dreams into reality, reconnecting people with their souls and helping them share their magnificence with the world in a potent, powerful, abundant way. Where does your inspiration come from? Great Spirit. That shining, shimmering energy that makes life so beautiful. All the magic and faith and courage. Oh gosh, it’s so hard to describe. I just think life is the best adventure ever! Besides the blessings of your earnings, what are your heartfelt blessings from your readers and customers?

24 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Honestly, just knowing that it’s making a difference in their lives and businesses makes my spirit feel very fulfilled. And being able to pass on abundance to a range of charities to change the world. That gives me the major jollies too! Would you like to share anything new that’s happening in your life and business? I’ve just launched my 2014 Create My Amazing Year in Life and Biz workbooks, planners and calendars (www.amazingworkbook.com). It’s my fifth year in producing them - they are rainbow and radiant and holy moly, they are so powerful at helping you set goals and actually reach them. I’m so grateful for the miracles they’ve unleashed into the world! You are obviously no stranger to the advent of blogging and maintaining a strong online presence. Please tell us two of the most important things that we should know, in order to get others interested in blogging. If you love what you do, it becomes a ding dang joy. Yes, it takes work and effort. But holy guacamole, it is SCRUMPTIOUS to create. Don’t lose sight of that. Delight in creating and sharing and helping people. And listen deeply to your own voice. Don’t mimic success. It’s boring and doesn’t attract people. Be you. Crazy, wacky, weird, wonderful you. Really emanate your own essence so people get who you are and how you are different, and are effortlessly attracted to that. Can you tell the readers about your BIG dream and what it means to you? My big dream is twofold: Helping as many souls as possible have beautiful, joyful lives and abundant businesses that share their earth angel gifts. And making a major difference in the world through philanthropy.

Of all your writings, which is the most powerful in getting your message across? Everything matters. I blog, write books, create programs, share daily on social media. It’s all potent. The most important thing is turning up with a heart that wants to give, and letting yourself shine through your writing. Just for fun, what do you like to do when not running your dream business? Oh.so.much! I love having a full life outside of my business. I believe it helps make an even fuller, more sacred business when I can bring a full cup to it. So you’ll find me at the beach, having wee adventures with my gorgeous ones, making art, journalling, writing, woodwork, making felted toys, giving myself creative challenges! Is there something stirring in your dreams for the near future after your Blogging booklet? Now the 2014 Amazing Year workbooks are out into the world, I’m diving my head down into creating my next business intensive program. And popping that one out before I pop out a baby! It’s creation station around these parts! Just the way I adore it.

Turn your intentions into actions! You, too, can find your dreams, and if you are really serious, let her journey continue in your foot steps. The Amazing Biz and Life Academy will be there to help you find exactly what you need. As Leonie tells us, and I believe too, you are meant to help change the world by using your passions and positive intentions to help you get there! She doesn’t promise your experience and journey will be easy, but with her unlimited knowledge and informative learning materials, she can definitely help you get there. Believe in your passions and present it to the world! 26 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Business & Tech Tips

10 Tricks You Might be Missing

On Social Media You’ve got a Facebook page. You’re posting like a demon. You are writing clever content and trying your best to reach the masses. You manage comments and engage with people who interact with your posts. Maybe you could go viral? That’s a word, right? Right, that’s what you want. That’s what we all want. A viral page that reaches people effortlessly, communicates our purpose and our witty, captivating content (and why you should follow our cause, buy our product, or simply CARE). However, your likes haven’t increased and your post views are disturbingly low! What’s gives? There ARE some things you can do, however, to really boost your efforts and it’s in that spirit that I wanted to share my top 10 tips for boosting your efforts. 28 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Branding Isn’t a Show Stopper •

1.

Link it all together - from big picture to your content and your strategy. Find synergies between what you post on your blog, Facebook page and other social media accounts including LinkedIn and Twitter.

2.

Use tools like Hootsuit to save you about 100 years of your life posting across digital forums. Decide which platform will act as the starting point for driving social media traffic and originate your content there, and sync your other accounts around the web so that you only have to post content once and the rest automatically populates.

3.

Give Pinterest a sincere chance as a contender in your regime. If you post lots of photos and back stories, final outcomes and graphics, Pinterest is a great tool to get people noticing your content and ending up clicking through to its original source (which can be your blog or your Facebook page). Read: more traffic.

4.

Post at least twice a day. Pages with excellent fan reach and engagement post as often as four to six times per day. However, this year saw the rise of the “hide” function - hides and reports of spam are not your friends. If you have a lot of Likes and and decent post views, then it is safe to post more frequently. But if your post views are low, remember only around 6-10% of your likes may actually be seeing the content at a time and if you annoy them by posting too frequently, you could see your Like count decrease by 6-10% quite steadily.

30 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

5.

Cool photo + text = recipe for a win. Caution: there is a penalty, it seems, on posts that include a link which takes a user off the site. This changed in late 2013, although personally, I would still include it! An image plus words and perhaps a shortened link to content to your website, will attract interest from the newsfeed and the fan’s friends more effectively than text or a simple link with auto thumbnail alone. Fact.

6.

Don’t just paste a link alone or with a photo, and run. Don’t be dry. Be engaging! Call them to action and make it urgent. “Click here for more info!” “Just 24 hours left in the sale! Act now!” these are far more effective that simply a copy paste. Instead of just seeing a photo, they’ll be more inclined to CLICK THE LINK! If your goal is to increase post engagement and drive up likes, rather than getting people off Facebook and onto your website, that’s cool! Use calls to action like “Show Your Support With A Like” or “Share This With A Friend”.

7.

It’s OK to drive traffic to a Facebook page, if Likes are your objective but do try to consider driving it toward a website to remind traffic that you’re a business (or a cause) with more to offer than witty thoughts and amusing images. It’s about AWARENESS of your message! Doing so can increase your traffic substantially.

8.

If you notice a particular post has performed well, people are liking and sharing and commenting like crazy, it’s worth investing a bit of money to promote it. If your fans are finding you rather clever today, there’s an excellent chance that others will see it and Like your page.

10 Tricks You Might be Missing on Social Media •

31

9.

Similarly, you should check your statistics and if you notice you that a post you’ve paid to promote is getting negative feedback, immediatelystop the ad/promotion. All you’re doing is spending money to hurt your Edgerank and remember, that means that fewer existing fans will see your posts in the feed without having to pay for them.

10.

Another brand new, amazing, promising gadget to hit our pages is Graph Search. So what’s the fuss? Well, Google has always indexed pages but it has been on the basis of page name, keywords in the about, your custom URL and of course the name of your page. Graph Search is a game changer because it takes all of the above and syncs it with connections to your page, to calculate suggestions to how searches actually are conducted. We’ll run some tips on this later in the year, I’m sure, but you MUST optimise your page to take full advantage of this juicy feature. Edit your basic information to include category, choose concise key words which are on point to what you’re offering, and start tagging photos with your page name.

Magnificence; impressiveness, grandness, richness. Splendid or imposing in size or appearance; “the grandness of architecture”; “impressed by the richness of the flora” I love that line, “the grandness of architecture”. What I know for sure is that there is undoubtedly architecture involved in creating a magnificent life. If you are going to join me in declaring that this year, 2014 will be your year of splendid richness and magnificence, then you are going to have to architect it. Here are four tricks and tips to help you triumphantly create your killer year of 2014.

Rose Colored Glasses Off Let’s be honest, 2013 may have been a great year for you, or it may have been a total bust, but in either case you have to be willing to reflect on it for what it truly was. Take an hour out of your life, heck if you don’t have a full hour then take four, fifteen minute blocks out and evaluate what really went right for you and what really went wrong for you. This is a must, a have-to activity if you really are serious about declaring 2014 your year of magnificence. Ask yourself why? Did you give up too easy? Was it totally out of your control? Just be honest and real. Your inner guide will gently lead you through to the answers if you are willing and open to hear and accept them. We can’t architect this new year on a faulty foundation, and last year is a piece of our foundation.

Shift Out of Neutral Are you in neutral? Are you in a rut? Being in neutral generally The Year of Your Magnificence •

isn’t a comfortable place for most of us. If we find ourselves in this place we usually fight it. We think we can “snap” out of it with different self talk, a brisk walk, food, filling the space with activity or people. The real deal is, we all have been here and we will all be here again. Why? Simple. It is our creative self’s way of slowing us down, of giving us a much needed break. Try not to fight it. When you resist, your creative self digs its heels in, and I will let you in on a little secret... it always wins. The rut will last longer if you try to shake it, out run it, ignore it, or wish it away. There is only one way to shift out of neutral—emotionally and mentally—and that is to embrace it. For most entrepreneurs this is one of the toughest lessons to learn but I promise you are going to have to learn it. The simple ways I embrace the rut, the shift into neutral is:

1

Acknowledge it out loud and internally. Say it!

2

Write - each day I spend a few moments doing what I call a brain dump.

3

I practice good self-care by watching what I say to myself during the shift into neutral.

4

Rearrange – sometimes schedules have to be rearranged.

5

Rest when you are in neutral, know that it doesn’t last forever but it is your time to fill back up.

Ear Muffs & Kool-Aid Two things you have to do as an entrepreneur in order to have a kick-ass year! At some point (or maybe every hour depending on how hectic your day is proving) you will need to put on ear muffs! 36 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

You will need to distract yourself from your own self-talk. We of course can be our worst critics, and sometimes we need to be, but most often we are over the top rude, mean, unkind and our expectations are out of control. Monitor your self – talk and be kind to you. There are plenty of critics and people waiting to judge and pounce all over you, so don’t be the ring leader in that circle. Next, and this might sound a little contradictory, but don’t drink your own kool-aid! Maybe you are The Bomb.Com (yeah I said that) but don’t let it go to your head. The entrepreneurs that I see who are respected the most have the largest following, produce the most creative work and impact the most people, are the ones that are grounded. The ones that don’t take themselves too seriously. The ones that are approachable and real. So yes, celebrate your victories, know what you are great at and declare that, but keep in mind there are tons of great and creative people on the planet.

Warrior Circle Have you ever made New Year’s Resolutions, set new goals for the year, but by early February you have already forgotten them, fallen out of routine to accomplish them, and back to the same old same old? If you haven’t then you are in the minority because, truth be told, most of us do this year after year. Let’s stop doing that, deal? If we know that we do this and yet we make no adjustments to the goal setting or New Year’s resolution process, then why oh why do we think this New Year will be any different? It won’t! We have to fix, modify and change our process if we are going to have a year of MAGNIFICENCE! The change that has to be made is what I call ‘creating your Warrior Circle!’ Simply put, a Warrior Circle is a group of passionate people, filled with energy, love, and creativity, each sharing the same goal - to create their best year yet! The difference between a Warrior Circle and your peer group of friends (or your

b.f.f.) is that these people are committed to seeing that you have a year of Magnificence also. They are people that don’t think like you, don’t set goals like you, don’t tackle goals like you. They

These are people that will make you think through your goals for 2014 in a new way. They will force you to be more creative with how you are going to approach and conquer your goals. are the opposite of you! Generally we gravitate towards peers and friends because they are similar to us. In creating a Warrior Circle you link hearts and minds to people that are ready to keep you accountable, keep you focused, keep you on track, tell you when you are off track, challenge you to be bold, dig deeper, go farther. These are people that will make you think through your goals for 2014 in a new way. They will force you to be more creative with how you are going to approach and conquer your goals. These are the warriors that are going to help you usher in magnificence in every area of your life in 2014. A Warrior Circle isn’t neccessarily a large group. It is a group of four - you, plus three others. The key is finding someone in each strength category. There are the doer’s, expressives, thinker’s and the analyzer’s. You need one from each category. For example, if you are a doer then you won’t need someone to fill that space. Consider putting together your own group of entrepreneur’s for 2014. 38 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Create a Warrior Circle that will commit to one another so that when February rolls around, you are all right on track to realize the Declaration Of Magnificence in 2014! If you are eager to be involved in a Warrior Circle group, including tapping into your creativity to identify, approach, and fulfill your goals for 2014, we will be launching a Warrior Circle group mid January. We have limited space so if you are interested email me directly at andrea@andreasullenger.com. Cost will be $37 in total and you will be connected with entrepreneur’s from all around the world, in a program that lasts for the entire year! All program details will be sent out January 13, 2014.

This Year

Why not resolve to KEEP your New Year’s Resolutions?

Here’s How...

Before you completely shrug off 2013 and launch headfirst into 2014... how was it for you? Did you achieve your most important goals? Did you stay on track? Did you even set any?

By Sandra Cunningham 44 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Statistics say that about 75% of us stick to our New Year goals for at least a week after January 1st, but less than half of us are still on track six months later! It’s part of our human makeup. We just have trouble making good on our New Year’s resolutions! It happens every year to so many of us, and the more we fall short on our goals, the less likely we are to set new ones. Now that’s a BIG problem for those of us who actually want to better ourselves in some way in the upcoming months: mentally, physically, spiritually, financially, in relationships, careers, business... whatever. Because, as some unknown writer once said, “In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia.”

Why Goals are a Good Thing... In fact, we do want focus, direction and we want to have some way of knowing how to get there. Goals give us direction, something to reach out for as we move along from day to day, week to week, month to month, year to year. Without them, we can find ourselves drifting through life, at the mercy of outside forces, unclear about what we want, who we are and where we are going. When we are clear-eyed and committed to what we want to achieve, believe wholeheartedly in its importance and equip ourselves with the resources necessary for the task, we stand a high chance of success. When we don’t have goals, we can never achieve anything truly meaningful or satisfying, except by chance. We react and respond rather than take risks and face challenges. We go with the flow becoming part of another’s agenda, because we don’t have our own. We rarely experience the fear of failure or the thrills of success, and, in the words of Pink Floyd, we grow “comfortably numb.” Why not resolve to KEEP your New Year’s Resolutions? •

45

Why Goals are a Bad Thing... Often however the mere mention of the word ‘goals’ is a complete turn-off. We live and work in a culture governed by plans, targets, measurement and reporting. When we become over-ruled by process, it is very easy to lose sight of the real vision and purpose that underpins our efforts.

“Through pursuing our goals we can express our true selves, we can make the difference we want to make, and we can build progress.”

Life and work becomes more about mechanics and delivery rather than satisfaction and meaning; more about task and duty rather than passion and desire. We forget the ‘being’ in our ‘doing’ and overlook the human aspects of our functioning. We are encouraged to set stre-e-e-e-tch goals in order to develop and move forward, yet so often these actions involve doing things we dread or aren’t terribly good at, and so we procrastinate. Our energy and motivation fly straight out the window. It gets even worse when we don’t actually achieve our goals, making us feel totally discouraged and like a complete failure.

So What’s The Answer? Actually, I believe that goals help us - simply because they offer us a way to turn our ideas into meaningful action. Through pursuing our goals we can express our true selves, we can make the difference we want to make, and we can build progress. Once we see our own progress, confidence builds, we feel more encouraged and our potential becomes limitless. But, despite goals and 46 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

planning being such a significant part of our culture, I have rarely come across someone who is highly skilled in the process and consistently effective in implementation. More often than not, we set ourselves up to ‘fail’ before we even get off the starting blocks. But once you learn how to set goals that are right for you, things can change dramatically.

5 Tips that’ll set you up for Goal Setting Success By applying the right methods for turning goals into meaningful, motivating action, you will not only be more confident about your success, you will also enjoy and appreciate the journey more than you might imagine. You will create, you will produce, you will follow your passion... and you will achieve.

1

Accentuate the positive.Think about what you want to create rather than what you want to eliminate or reduce. Eg, “Balance work with other personal activities” rather than “Reduce the amount of time spent in the office”

2

Articulate your goal as an ‘end state’ rather than a process. Eg “ I want to have money left at the end of the month” rather than “I want to curb my spending habits.” Envisaging how your life will have changed once you’ve succeeded is far more motivating than giving yourself more rules to live by.

3

Think about what YOU want to create rather than what it says about you. If you do something because of some unwritten rule that says you should or because of what others may think of you, then you are less likely to succeed. Why not resolve to KEEP your New Year’s Resolutions? •

47

4

Avoid complicated goals and keep them as simple as possible. If you find it hard to get really clear on a goal, keep asking yourself, ‘what will happen if I get this?’. You will eventually arrive at your goal.

5

Figure out WHY each goal is important to you. If it really is meaningful (as opposed to just being something think you ‘ought to’ do) then you’re likely to experience an emotional zap or burst of energy at the thought of it. Once you can connect with the emotional essence behind a goal you will be more likely to succeed.

Remember, for most of us, the only thing that stands in the way of making our new year dreams come true is ourselves.

As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right.” And I believe we most definitely can! I wish you a successful and prosperous 2014!

“If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to help them build theirs.”

The School of

Hard Knocks I’m an advocate for whole person well-being. I include in that mental, physical and personal well-being. And because of my bent towards learning and development, I have a belief that in the workplace, we are all responsible to help support each other, and in particular, managers helping their staff.

There are a few points to this. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Sukh Pabial 50 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

How do we help managers recognise when our staff’s well-being is knocked? I’m drawn to thinking about programmes of mentoring from senior managers for high potentials to support talent management and succession planning efforts. What is mentoring if not helping provide the right advice and guidance on how to make yourself more resilient to upcoming challenges so that you can move up the proverbial ladder? The underlying assumption here (apart from some being more deserved of special treatment over others) is that we can’t all make it in life. It’s kind of the corporate version of ‘survival of the fittest’, but with a helping hand. I’m also drawn to thinking about the school of hard knocks. Life is life. We can’t account for everything that may come our way, and we can’t prepare for everything we may face. There is an image I see making the rounds on the internets which is like this…

Be kind because Well, ok, maybe not everyone. There are some who say life is great and they’re having the best time of their life, which I don’t doubt, and it’s something I wish we could all find. And finally I’m drawn to thinking about life today. Many older people will claim that the kids of today have never had life so easy, and to an extent this is true. There’s no world war to be concerned with. We’re fortunate to live in a modern western country in the UK, with modern facilities and all the promise of technology at our fingertips. We have a modern education system, and advancements in workplace policies and procedures which mean fair working for everyone, and we have modern medicine which can fight most ailments in life and help us live fulfilled lives. The School of Hard Knocks •

51

It’s all good, right? And here are the common things said about the school of hard knocks…

“I never had anyone show me how to do it, I had to learn as I went along.”

me things so , ht ug ta be n ca g hin yt er ev ot “N have to be experienced.” “If we teach everyone everything, what will they know about life?”

“Life is hard, we can’t make it easy.”

Except. If we have the capability to help and support our people at work in better ways, which give them the right thinking and mindset to manage in the future, why wouldn’t we do this?

So there it is. Come on, 2014...

You Have Just

Been Appointed

C.E.O

It’s true. I’ve just appointed you CEO of You, Inc. So from now

on you will need to make your decisions accordingly. I have given so many clients this advice and it is a game changer for them! Why? Because as unglamorous and chilly as it sounds, life is kind of like a company. You have the bosses, the employees, the mission and the message, the bottom line, the strategic planning, the SWOT analysis (assessing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) and even employee appreciation days. You have all of those things in your life.

As CEO of your company (aka your life) you have

incredible freedom and perks. You get to decide who you trust and enjoy enough to hire (bring into your life). You get to decide who is no longer serving the company and must be let go. You get to make the one year plan, the company mission statement, the workshops, and you are responsible for employee morale. I used to be a “yes man.” I said yes to everything, whether I wanted to do it or not. And what would invariably happen is that as the obligation drew near, I would get more and more irritated, maybe even start to resent the person I had agreed to help or meet and the energy of the day would plummet. I was just trying to please everyone so my intentions were coming from a place of purity and service. But it’s ok to consider YOUR best interests. Any competent CEO would. Let me tell you a very short story about the day I became the CEO of Gina, Inc. I had been invited to dinner. I really didn’t want to go as it was a group of people I had grown apart from and I was no longer comfortable in their company. The night of the dinner came. It was dark, rainy, my youngest child was sick, I wasn’t feeling 100%, my husband ended up working late so I was scrambling to find child care and with every passing hour that the dinner approached I was more and more irritable. But then something clicked. I went into CEO mode. I thought to myself “This is absurd. This is MY life. MY time. Time is the only resource that I can never replenish and I should get to decide how I want to spend every delicious hour of it!” I called the person who had organized the dinner and respectfully said, “Unfortunately I am not going to be able to make it. My family needs me tonight.” Period. End of story. No fake excuses. No contrived apology. This particular dinner was not in the best interest of my company You Have Just Been Appointed C.E.O •

57

or my staff (my home and my family.) I can’t tell you the amazing feeling of freedom you will feel when you no longer have to dream up excuses.

This is YOUR time. Your life. And sure you want to be in

service and there will be times you have to honor an obligation. But how many hours of your time have you given to the draining friend who keeps you on the phone for hours lamenting their dramatic love life? (When really the time clock was ticking and your company’s billable time would be better spent on a growth task?) How many hours have you spent at a monthly book club that you no longer enjoy at ALL? How many hours have you spent trying to preserve a friendship that had run its course, emailing back and forth, feeling misunderstood and unheard but hesitant to pull the plug? It’s perfectly ok, and I would argue imperative to your selfworth, to make decisions firmly and proclaim them confidently. And most people will respect you for it...

The ones who don’t will never be invited to join your company and they will miss out on the stock options, the perks and the company Christmas party.

Getting The Retro Look

On a Budget

An inexpensive & cheap pin up look… is it really possible? Everyone is under the impression you have to spend a ton of cash to get this look. This is a myth. Of course you can if you want to; shop for all brand new retro pieces or original vintage, but you can also do the pin up style on a budget. Quite commonly, you’ll hear people say that a perfect place to shop for this style is at thrift stores. But the reality is that most of us can’t dedicate endless hours looking for one or two amazing pieces to add to our collection.

Here are some tips that will get you underway without breaking the piggy bank. Getting The Retro Look On a Budget •

65

1. Use what you already have in your wardrobe If you are brand new to this look, you don’t need to throw away all of your wardrobe and start again. Have a good look at your existing pieces. Do you have a nice knee length flowy dress or skirt that you could just add a petticoat to underneath to give it a vintage look? How about anything with prints? Some great retro prints are cherries, animal print (leopard print is the most common), roses, bows, nautical themed, stars, polka dot, stripes, and sugar skulls are some of the most popular patterns for clothes and purses.

2. Invest in hair accessories Pin ups were known for their amazing hairdos and the extravagant hair pieces they had, including large hair flowers, bows and fascinators. Pair this with cat eye make up, well defined brows and some super easy pin up hairstyles and you have yourself a winner for the hair and make up side of things!

3. Be patient with this look If you are indeed on a budget, then you will need to have patience in finding the right pieces for your wardrobe. Quite often you will find big retail stores like Walmart and Target stocking the occasional pin up item like cat eye sunglasses, a retro cut swimsuit or a leopard print dress. Keep your eyes pealed.

4. It’s all about quality, not quantity 66 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

The pin up look isn’t like mainstream fashion, where you need to buy, buy, buy every few months to keep up with what’s ‘in’. My advice is to really look for timeless pieces which are good quality and you know you will wear over and over again by matching it with different items. So it’s good to buy pieces which you know will work with the rest of your wardrobe, and not a piece that you will need to buy new shoes and accessories for to match.

5. Shoe Simplicity The pin up look is great for the budget when it comes to shoes. I can honestly say that you will most likely be able to get away with two pairs of shoes for pretty much all of your wardrobe. They are black kitten heels (usually inexpensive as they are not part of the mainstream fashion) and black ballet flats. Easy!

6. One retro looking piece In your daily outfits, opt for just one piece which has the retro look, which will tie the whole outfit together eg. a swing skirt with a tank top, a knee length pencil skirt with a tank top, high waisted jeans and a tank top. By just incorporating one piece that is traditionally vintage, you will still exude the pin up!

7. Add the signature beauty spot This is super easy! Just draw on a small beauty spot near your eye or mouth (whichever feature you want to highlight on your face) and this will really give you just that little edge, combined with your other pin up make up.

Lots of love, Sorelle Getting The Retro Look On a Budget •

Healthy Travel Tips (Plus DIY Face Mist Recipe)

Smooshed in a middle seat in the deepest, darkest corner of Economy on a plane is a far cry from the golden age of travel. I love to travel. I hate flying. It’s a problem. (Especially living an ocean away from my family!). Part of my hatred is because I still can’t believe that planes can fly, and am convinced we’re going to crash at the slightest turbulence. The other part of my hatred is because of the hassle of airports, security, endless waits, delays, expenses and the fact that I always seem to catch a cold from a long flight! FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Amanda Cook 68 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Why do we seem to catch a cold on a plane flight? Two reasons: dry air, and lots of people in a confined space. At high altitudes, the air doesn’t have as much moisture in it, which dries out your respiratory system and makes it more susceptible to germs.

What can you do to stay healthy while flying? Stay hydrated – drink lots of water! They say to avoid alcohol and caffeine on flights because they’re dehydrating… but given my flight anxiety, having some wine with dinner really helps me relax. So I bring along a full water bottle and ask the flight attendants to refill it for me when empty.

Moisturize – hand and face moisturizer are always handy if your skin dries out. But I’m talking about moisturizing your nasal passages (fun!) For any flight longer than 5 hours, I’ve started using a simple saline nasal spray hourly during the flight. Might look weird, but it makes my nose feel so much better. I didn’t even realize it was so dry until I started doing this.

Be extra germ aware – wash your hands frequently, and don’t touch your nose or eyes. Bring comforting items – this is unscientific, but a personal belief – I think our immune systems are stronger when we’re relaxed, comfortable and happy (ie, not stressed). So bring some items to improve your flight experience – my travel kit contains: fuzzy socks, a good book, noise-cancelling headphones, my ipod, and warm scarf/wrap.

Healthy Travel Tips •

As a last touch, being the product junkie that I am, I now bring a homemade facial mist. In my less-green days I used an evian facial spray, or even more expensively, one of the fancy face spray products made for plane travel. But now I make my own. It’s super simple, you can customize the scent, and packs a double-punch of being antibacterial AND relaxing.

Jet Setter Facial Mist You’ll need: Rosewater (or distilled water) – Rosewater is moisturizing and soothing, so it’s perfect in this recipe. But you could also use orange flower water or distilled water. Essential oils (lavender, geranium, rosemary, or whatever you prefer) Small pump spray bottle (under 100ml for airline regulations!) How to: Add 50ml or slightly less than 1/4 c. of rosewater to your spray bottle. Add 10 drops of essential oil (I used 5 drops lavender, 3 drops rosemary, 2 drops geranium). Shake. Spray on your face or in the air in front of you on the plane (avoiding your seat-mates!!) Note: The ratio is 20 drops essential oil per 100 ml of water. Use any combination of essential oils that you want. I would include something purifying like eucalyptus, rosemary, tea tree, lemon etc. plus something relaxing like lavender, geranium, clary sage etc.

Lifestyle & Wellness

2014

The Year of the PowHERhouse According to Chinese astrology, 2014 is the year of the horse. That may be the case, but we believe 2014 is the year of the PowHERhouse. Our time has come.

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Charlene SanJenko

How many of you have been planting seeds, putting in the time and diligently working towards your goals? I know we have. So what does it take to get from ‘here’ to ‘there’? “One of life’s central challenges is to keep closing the gap between where we are and where we most want to be. This includes the connection between the work you do and knowing in your heart the actual difference your efforts are making in the world.” Robert K. Cooper, The Other 90%. And it is vitally important for women to continue to close this gap. According to Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In, “Women became 50% of college graduates in the United States in the early 1980’s. Since then, a meager 21 of the Fortune 500 CEO’s are women. Women hold about 14% of the executive officer positions, 17% of board seats, and constitute 18% of our elected congressional officials.”

1

Exactly how do we ‘close this gap’? PowHERhouse believes there are three simple yet critical steps:

2

Remembering your true talent and natural gifts.

3

Finding the confidence and courage to step-up and stepinto owning them.

Actively creating connection and collaborate with like-minded peeps who support and inspire you on your journey to greatness.

It sounds simple enough… so why do we continually choke? Women shy away from the word “leadership” like a lifestyle management client of mine trying to avoid me in the grocery store for fear that I’m taking inventory of her grocery cart - eyes diverted, narrow focus, sneaking around the outskirts rather than owning some middle ground. #1 – I’m not looking in your cart, I’m quietly cheering you on from the sidelines. And #2, these same women are playing a major leadership role within their family unit, in their children’s schools, in the workplace, and perhaps elsewhere in the community. They just don’t own it. Boiled down to its simplest form, PowHERhouse’s definition of leadership is, “Deciding to make a difference and doing something about it.” Whether that’s personally or professionally, locally or globally, leadership = making a difference. We are terming 2014: The Year of the PowHERhouse because we believe women are ready to make a highly impactful positive difference, and to own doing so. The world is desperately craving the same. I recently heard the question, “How will I foster my own well-being so I can continue to pursue my leadership and life aspirations with vigor?” My invitation to you is to spend some time this New Year’s answering this question with clarity and focus. Resolutions centered on weight loss and gym memberships are beneath you. Get to the core reason for doing what you need to do: Figure out your mission - a cause you can commit to. At PowHERhouse our tagline is, “The Muscle behind Your Mission.” Are we interested to see you achieve your health and wellness goals? You bet. Lifestyle Management is a key 78 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

component of what we do. However, that is not our ultimate purpose but rather a means to an end. The stronger you are in your body, the stronger you will be in your daily life. As your physicality improves with greater energy, groundedness and awareness of who you are in your body, other areas of your life will also begin to grow and expand. Your vibrancy and magnetism will grow and expand… and opportunities will show up well-matched to your Mission – which is why clarity and focus are so important. You ask, “All this from taking care of yourself?” Yes. PowHERhouse celebrates the convergence of lifestyle and leadership for this very reason. We are a community of professional women at all levels in their careers - from emerging to re-emerging. A place to connect, empower, envision and truly work as a community. Focusing on lifestyle as the essential pillar of true personal power. We actively participate in changing the way our communities work, by beginning with ourselves.

We’ve got a fairly aggressive vision. 2014 is our year: The Year of the PowHERhouse. We invite you to join us ~ locally or globally. We’d love to be The Mission behind Your Mission!

The Vitamin Cure Most Doctors Don’t Tell You About (Even Though it Can Save Lives)

As an orthomolecular nutritionist I specialize in preventing and healing disease through vitamin cures. Natural remedies can be incredibly powerful and one of my favorite vitamins is vitamin C, aka ascorbic acid. Most people know that it prevents scurvy, supports our immune system, and boosts skin health, but it can do so much more. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Nathalie de Ahna 82 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Last year, high doses of a vitamin C drink I mix myself, called liposomal vitamin C, helped me prevent pneumonia after catching a virus that came out of the blue, settled right in my lungs and within two hours made me sicker than I had ever been before. I took nothing but large amounts of this vitamin C drink and after three days I was up and running again, ready to take care of my husband who had also gotten sick. He stubbornly only took regular doses of vitamin C and was indeed diagnosed with pneumonia after a week.

Using high doses of vitamin C to fight infections is nothing new. Also, it is not a fishy miracle cure only nut jobs recommend. What I did is called ‘Vitamin C Megadose Therapy’ which is so effective that it saved a New Zealand dairy farmer who had contracted a very serious case of swine flu and whose doctors were convinced he would die. Unfortunately, conventional medicine often does not believe in simple remedies such as vitamin megadoses. The hospital where dairy farmer Allan Smith was laying even refused to administer him vitamin C in intravenous form, which is the most effective. The doctors there were convinced this wouldn’t work anyway. Luckily, the renowned US vitamin C expert Dr. Levy helped Allan’s family find a supportive colleague in New Zealand, the “declared dead” finally received vitamin C IVs and did not only come back to life a lot faster than anyone would have thought, he also recovered from Hairy Cell Leukemia which had been diagnosed during his time in the hospital. According to the independent non-profit organization, The The Vitamin Cure Most Doctors Don’t Tell You About •

83

Orthomolecular Medicine News Servicve, high doses of vitamin C have an antiviral, anti-bacterial, antifungal as well as an anticancer effect. Its digital archives contain dozens of scientific resources proving the potency of vitamin C and list tons of information on orthomolecular pioneers such as Frederick R. Klenner, who said that “failure to benefit from Vitamin C use is usually due to inadequate amounts being used for too short a period of time“, or Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling, who took 18 grams of vitamin C a day just for maintenance. (The Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin C is between 40 and 125 milligram a day.) Although my family and I follow a very good diet we all supplement with vitamin C on a daily basis. As soon as I discover a runny nose, we significantly increase the dose, which effectively fights off the nastiest viruses.

My kids haven’t been sick in years and also my husband has learnt his lesson. If you want to find out more about this incredible vitamin, as well as recommended orthomolecular dosages, check out this overview by Vitamin C Foundation. It could prove useful the next time you catch a nasty virus.

Artesan Craftsmanship, All-Natural Ingredients

Part of developing good taste is becoming aware of the characteristics of the stuff we see and buy and use. Become conscious of color and form and function. Learn to spot the designer’s hard work in simplifying things. It’s the big reason Posh Brats products are so loved and coveted: good, simple, elegant design. I also think it’s one of the main reasons why so many people are flocking to Etsy and buying handmade items....they are just classier and more beautiful than mass-produced crap.

Skincare Bath& Beauty

“If you mention taste nowadays, a lot of people will tell you that - Made in feels England “taste is subjective.” They believe this because it really that way to them. When they like something, they have no idea why. It could be because it’s beautiful, or because their mother had one, or because they saw a movie star with one in a magazine, or www.poshbrats.com because they know it’s expensive. Their thoughts are a tangle of unexamined impulses. “ - Paul Graham

Have You Got

A Book In You

So many of us have a story to tell, me included. It was about two years ago now when I eventualy got over my fear of judgement and being “out there”, and started my own novel, Twelve Lessons. Through the process of writing I learned alot about myself, and I faced fears that I didn’t realise I was holding on to! The real test for me came when I had finished my manuscript and it was time to get serious and start submitting to publishers. I had no idea where to start and naively thought that since I was sitting on the next literary phenomenon, that this would be easy. I googled agents and publishers that in my mind would snap me up, bought good quality paper for my printer and started my introduction letters. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Kate Spencer 86 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

It’s worth pointing out that this is a time consuming task, everyone seems to want something different from you! Before you start it’s useful to have a good covering letter, a brief synopsis about your work, and a good, tidy version of your submission. By tidy I mean obviously run a spell check, and if you have a lovely friend that will proof read it for you then this can be helpful, when you are reading your own work you can be too close to see errors or areas for improvement.

“...although an agent or publisher will know more about the industry than you will, you know your work better than anyone.” I submitted to about twenty publishers and about 5 agents, and I have one near miss with a very successful agent and a very big and powerful publishing house, but neither materialized into offers. This gave me confidence that my work was good and I kept going. I was picked up by a small independent publisher and I jumped at the chance to work together, after all this could be my big moment! It was several months in and just before my book, Twelve Lessons, was about to go to print that I had a bit of a reality check. Although my publisher was clearly doing her best, she had different ideas to me about promoting my work and moving it forwards. I admit of course that I am precious about my work, and that I have fixed ideas about who my reader is and how I am going to reach them, after all, it’s my book! And although I am not encouraging arrogance, I am encouraging you to use your intuition and your own savvy here, although an agent or publisher will know more about the industry than you will, you know your work better than anyone. Any publisher expects an author to be highly proactive and involved in marketing and sales, so no matter who you end up with Have You Got a Book in You •

87

this will always be the case, and in my case, I decided that if I was going to have to put that much work in myself, then I would rather have the creative freedom to go it alone and also make all of the profits myself.

I wrestled with the “self publishing” image for a

while, some people do think its a bit of a fail, or an exercise in vanity. From what I have read on forums, self publishing is often done on the cheap without enough professional input and can end up in an inferior product that really could have done with a good edit and better cover design. I decided then that my book Twelve Lessons was going to be a good quality book, and I invested in editorial help, a professional typeset and cover design and I went to print myself. I navigated myself through the minefield of ISBNs and the foreign language of printers (bounce, bleed and pantone?) and eventually came out of the other side with a printed paperback version of my book that I am proud of. It’s worth mentioning also that in the background I had been building a large social media platform that was targeted at my readership, so that when I had my product I could sell it through to the end user easily. My initial print run of 950 books was paid for within 2 weeks of me going live, and everything else was profit. Some say that I have been fortunate and I would agree with that to some degree, but I also think that I have been brave, creative, hardworking and forward thinking in this process and I know for sure I have learned a lot. Of course if someone came to me and made me an offer I could not refuse, I’d seriously consider it, after all, Fifty Shades and The Hunger Games were both self published initially, but for now I am happy being self published and having complete control, as well as all of the profit! 88 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Q

Dear Mellissa, thank you for this opportunity to have my letter answered. I have a child with my ex partner. His family do not know that we are apart, yet we live together. I have now met someone else. What do I do? Nicky

A

Hello gorgeous! You cannot afford to move out. You cannot afford to live a lie either. Do not have expectations to move in with your new man as he is not ready for a commitment just yet. He is a good man for you, but it needs more time. Your ex needs to come clear with his family about your relationship situation, and don’t worry, your ex won’t stand in your way of any new romance; your child is extremely important to him.

Q

Dear Mystic Sisters, I’m feeling so emotional as I write this. I went on holiday with my man recently. While he was in the pool, I used his mobile to text one of our friends, which is when I noticed a personal text to another girl from him. However, I didn’t want to confront him about this. What should I do? Is he thinking of leaving me? Distraught

A

Dear Ms Distraught, he is not thinking of leaving you. He was simply flirting and will continue to do so. He has that streak in him. He does love you and wants to make a commitment with you. He is a bit bored and restless in the confines of the relationship. Focus on you. Give yourself some TLC. A bit of self love and let it go.

Q

Dear Mellissa, my mum has a gorgeous new man who gives her everything. He is so attractive and, to be honest, I quite fancy him. My mum is a cow. What should I do? Strange Attraction

A

A mother gives you life. Respect that. He is not attracted to you. A female calf is an heifer. Lotsa love!

Food, Home & Family

Spanish

Rice

Over the Christmas holidays I was determined to try something new. After much thought I decided I would learn to make tamales by hand. My mantra has always been, “If you can read, you can cook” - My way of not letting myself off the hook just because a recipe didn’t fit my “Southern roots”. If I didn’t understand the food I would look it up or ask someone. Most people are very friendly if you ask them about the foods they love to make. So, I asked an international student at my school what his favorite tamale was. His answer was different than I anticipated. Bursting out of the room, he said, “Oh I love the pink ones! They’re my favorite!” I soon found out that tamales can be filled with just about anything and be any color. His were pink, sweet filled with raisins... ours were a little more traditional!

So, I found this amazing recipe. Rather, it’s creator found this blog via WordPress. I, then, found the Nerdsteak.com site and this recipe for Sriracha Brussel Sprouts. Readers, I don’t know if you know or not, but WordPress is its own neat community these days! When I first started blogging a year and a half ago, I always felt like I was talking to myself, but finding other blogs to read and realizing that others find this blog is pretty cool, now! Sriracha Brussel Sprouts! •

99

As soon as I saw his recipe, I knew I had to make it! I couldn’t find the exact spice blend that he uses at my local grocery store (I’ll look into buying it online; it looks like a cool brand of spice products), so I used what we, in this house, refer to as “Rooster Sauce.” It is the Huy Fong Foods SRIRACHA. The results were incredible, and what’s more, it was super easy to make!

Directions

• Cut Brussel sprouts into halves or quarters • Coat in olive oil, tossing in a bowl • Drizzle and coat in Sriracha in the same bowl (1/2 cup or so) • Spread onto baking sheet and add s&p, to taste • Bake at 350F for about 20 minutes • Stir in more Sriracha and coconut (1/2 cup or so) and almond slivers (1/2 cup) • Return to oven for an additional 5-8 minutes!

As we enter a new year it is so easy to look at it as a chance at a new beginning. Although we find it very hard to forgive or forget our past transgressions we love the chance to try to start fresh. I try to remember that each day is a new beginning, a chance to learn from yesterday’s mistakes or less than brilliant spontaneous impulses that seemed like a good idea at the time. There seems to be no shortage of those in my repertoire. Our entire life is made up of new beginnings or phases that we have to deal with, unfortunately for them, our loved ones have a front row seat to the show. One of the hardest phases in my life was when I hit puberty; little did I know it was even harder on my parents. Now as we experience the transformation of my two oldest children, as they travel down the long and winding road of maturing, I once again thank my parents for not giving me away. With two teenagers living in this house the amount of hormones flying around here are enough to choke on. The mood swings, pimples, growth spurts and voice cracking are happening at such a fast rate that there are times I do not recognize my own children. Then there are other times when, due to the mood swings, I don’t want to recognize them or even admit that they are mine. From what I have seen girls have a more noticeable emotional change then the boys do. Maybe it is because females are more open about their feelings to begin with, when puberty kicks in there seems to be an overload or maybe it’s a short circuit. I have seen my daughter doubled over, laughing hysterically into the phone and within seconds I hear the crash as she slams the receiver down with a furiousness equaled only by a mother bear New Beginnings •

103

after someone has taken her cub. By the time I make it to her room to see how she is going to pay for a new phone she is not just crying but sobbing breathlessly into her pillow. The “kid gloves” go on and after some time rubbing her back and promising her that it can’t be that bad I finally drag from her the reason of the emotional melt down...another girl just bought the outfit that she had been saving for. Even though I have experienced the transformation personally there are times I look at my daughter and try to figure out what alien species has taken over her mind. I think remembering puberty is like remembering childbirth, you know it was bad but you are unable to grasp the severity of the experience. There is a distinct possibility that memories have been intentionally blocked or should I say buried. What girl doesn’t have a story of her first period? Whether mother nature arrived at school, during a sleep over or while swimming on vacation we are never ready for it. Every female knows the feeling of dread in the pit of her stomach as she wonders if she is leaking or if it is just her paranoid imagination. We didn’t even need to use words, the universal look of fear to any female friend through out the day relayed the question and caused a quick “check” to make sure there had been no visible accidents screaming out to everyone from the seat of your pants. If I am having a hard time there is absolutely no hope that my husband will understand what she is going through. Men have a hard enough time understanding the female race to begin with but when you throw in an unbalanced adolescence you can’t tell which of the two is more confused. There have been many times I have had to explain to my husband that it is only the hormones when my daughter stomps from the room in an unintended imitation of Attila the Hun, then moments 104 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

later returns laughing without a care in the world. When she has a bad day I just hug her as my husband looks on questioning if a prescription of Prozac is needed. Once again I reassure him that she is not turning into “Sybil” (the woman diagnosed with 16 different personalities) only that she is becoming a woman. He is not happy about either option and requests that she just stay his little girl with bouncing pony tails forever. As he shakes his head he wonders how he is going to make it through the next few years. He has new respect for my daughter’s boyfriend who seems to be able to let the bi-polar behavior just roll off his back. I don’t have the heart to tell my husband that by the time we are done dealing with the kid’s roller coaster ride through puberty, it will be time to take a trip on the menacing menopausal high wire walk. I’m sure I will prove to be just as bad or maybe even worse. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

So cut yourself some slack this new year, yes set goals and attempt to empower and improve yourself but remember we rarely get things right the first time around for a variety of reasons. We don’t give up on the ones we love so don’t give up on yourself. Happy New Year!

Elegant,Delicate Floral Haute Couture

Maggie Austin by Cake Masters Magazine

Following her career as a classical ballet dancer, Maggie completed the prestigious L’art de la Pâtisserie program at the French Pastry School with honours. She brought her unique artistic vision to life when she launched Maggie Austin Cake in 2010. She has now reached a worldwide audience through extensive media coverage; including newspapers, magazines, blogs, and television. Most recently, Maggie was commissioned to create hand made sugar Vlower vases for the White House during Christmas 2013! We had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Maggie Austin and showcasing her beautiful cake couture in this Cake Masters Magazine exclusive. Tell us about your career in ballet and how that evolved into a career in the world of cakes. The career of a dancer is quite short, so I began a professional career right after high school. I worked with wonderful companies, where I was fortunate to perform both the standard classical repertory (like Nutcracker and Don Quixote) as well as new contemporary choreography. Ballet appealed to my love of the process: a methodical ritual that strives toward perfection. For me, the applause was not the goal. In general, dancers are not particularly goal-‐oriented people! Afternoon Tea Four Seasons Hotel ~ Hampshire

ISSUE 16 JANUARY 2014 AFTERNOON TEA

Travel ~ Taste ~ Try You know I love me some afternoon tea in London, but let's be real; unless you actually live in London or near-‐ish to it, it's oftentimes a long and sometimes expensive journey to get there, let alone the cost of some of the afternoon teas there. So I'm always on the lookout for fabulous afternoon teas outside of London (& nearer to home for me here in Berkshire). OK, who knew there was a Four Seasons Hotel in Hampshire, literally only half an hour from me by car?! A few kind friends had mentioned this hotel to me in the past, but once I discovered they served afternoon tea, well, you know I had to check it out! I'll start off by saying that despite the prestigious Four Seasons 'brand/name,' this is a reasonably priced afternoon tea at £27 per person for the traditional afternoon tea. This

includes a generous selection of delicious sandwiches (my fave was the trufKled duck egg and watercress on granary bread), fresh scones served with Cornish clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam, orange marmalade AND lemon curd, and gorgeous looking and tasting pastries. All of this scrumptiousness was served in beautiful china in the stunning setting of the hotel's library, which was originally Sir Henry Mildmay's Billiard Room. I love indulging in a traditional afternoon tea steeped in history!

There were plenty of teas to choose from, from English Breakfast, to Hampshire Blend, to organic chamomile, Lapsang Souchong, etc.; but the one that really caught my eye was the Hampshire Christmas Nutcracker Tea (a fab blend of black tea, vanilla and hazelnut). Although it's a festive season Klavour, I do hope they continue to serve this into the New Year, as it really was something special! I don't know about you, but I usually start with the savoury selection Kirst; but once I devoured the yummy Kinger sandwiches -‐ which are "seasonally Klavoured," as one of the other sandwiches served was roast turkey breast, chestnut stufKing, cranberry chutney

on white bread -‐ it was time to move onto the cranberry scone. I smothered mine in the clotted cream and strawberry jam to start with, but had to try it with the lemon curd as well. I hardly Kind scones life-‐changing, but the quality of ingredients both in the scones and in the cream, jam and curd made this experience all the more YAY! Last, but totally not least, I moved onto the pastries: beautifully presented sacher torte, nougat, banoffee cake, and coconut dacquoise with raspberry jelly. I'll share with you exactly what I told some friends immediately after my

tea experience here; "So inspiring, as these little morsels packed so much Klavour! Simple, elegant presentation and just bite-‐sized perfection!" It was one of those moments for me, when I wished I had worn stretch-‐pants or pyjama-‐jeans so I could have EATEN MORE! So here's the thing; I COULD have eaten more and could have drunk more (did I mention they also make the most awesome and glittery cocktails there?! The "Galaxy" cocktail they served me was out of this world!) because the very gracious and attentive staff offered top-‐ ups, more tea and really provided top-‐notch service.

Just as I have my fave afternoon tea spots in London, The Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire's afternoon tea rates right up there for me, and I have already recommended this lovely afternoon tea option to a number of friends in the area. It's just off the M3 and well worth a visit. If you have time, enjoy a walk around the stunning grounds. Oh, and did I mention that the parking is free?

Decorating our family Christmas cake with 'peaky' royal icing, sticking in some dodgy shop bought decorations and wrapping a funny, foiled, frilly ribbon around it. Also a fairy castle birthday cake with classic ice cream turrets. Where did you learn cake decorating? I was lucky enough to Kind amazing job in a shop (Cakes 4 Fun) with some lovely people who taught me all the basics and more. I then went to work for 6 months or so with Peggy Porschen, where I managed to practice lots of piping and making 'thumb roses'! I have also done a few day and short courses here and there to help me improve. Continued
