Some simply take the proverb as a reminder not to be snoopy, nosy and gossipy. “See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil” perfectly encapsulates the mantra “Mind Your Own Business” and is also used to describe someone who does not want to be involved in a situation.

Historically, and found today in every Japanese temple, there was a fourth monkey, covering his crotch, who symbolises the principle of “Do no Evil” which was banned from Europe in the Middle Ages. Kandabi wanted to pay homage to it, so it has been abstractly depicted in this piece by a deliberate placement of the light source in the middle monkey’s abdomen.

We like to think that we came about, as a result of a combination of the two. Hat Trick Strategies is a firm based in the UK and with a presence in the US and parts of the EU. Since the late 90s, too many were left behind by a technologydriven age, where less was made with hands and ‘lingo’ prevailed.

On the other polarity, we have told young people to ‘degree-up’ now, while the job market is poor, producing more graduates and post-graduates than ever who fall into the “over-qualified, underskilled” trap. With complicated and seemingly endless routes into employment, many of which offer no guarantee to an actual paid position, throw into the mix a challenging economic situation, children (or simply, life!) and it can be difficult for many to know what skills are valued in the workplace. For those who finally get there, how does one progress up the ladder?

In sharing our skills and expertise, we help close that gap for those ‘learning to fish’, while recognizing those who have achieved their dreams. By Veronica Fowler Hat Trick Special Feature Have you ever had a dream or a desire that always seemed to be unattainable? That no matter how hard you tried, you just ended up hitting that proverbial wall? Well , I am here to tell you that YOU can make ANY dream or desire come true if you are willing to work towards that goal. Nothing ever happens without some sort of effort. You must be willing to do the work. Here is an example which I personally experienced, and if I can “do it” …..so can you!

It has been a lifelong dream of mine to write an publish a book.

Writing has always been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. For me it was an outlet that gave me the opportunity to create something…..something that was all mine. I never seriously worked towards my goal, always thinking to myself, “it won’t happen anyway” or “ I am not good enough”. I can tell you that pessimism never got anyone anywhere. I have learned that to always stay positive even in the face of adversity usually has a much better outcome. You will never know what you can accomplish if you don’t try. Right?

Actually , this is a funny story. One of which many will find insane and others, perhaps, cute . I prefer interes*ng…

Years passed, many attempts were made but the inspiration was never there. I had many good ideas but nothing ever developed or came to light. Here is where my story begins…..my journey to fulfillment…..

A few years ago, there was a new book/movie released called “Twilight”. A love story of sorts between a vampire and a human girl. A new twist on a love story for today’s teens. I had my “Dirty Dancing”, these teens have their “Twilight”. A friend of mine had told me that I “needed” to see the film. Another said I”needed” to read the book. I just laughed to myself and told them that I am not interested in “that” teenie stuff. After many attempts to persuade me, I gave in and viewed the movie(I will add that at this time I had been riding an emotional roller coaster that never seemed to slow down). After watching the movie, all I could think to

myself was, “WOW! What a great love story!” You see, I am one of the biggest, sappiest romantics out there and I saw beyond the teen angst and saw the central story…..a love story. I immediately bought all of the books and delved into them, losing myself in someone else’s emotionality. Here’s where my journey takes a spin……

At the time, I had some pressing engagements where I had to sit alone for hours at a time everyday with nothing to do. So every day I brought paper and a pen with me. I thought maybe I’d write some letters or something. Then “ it” just happened. The story of Bella and Edward had crossed my mind and the words to “ My Cell” just jumped out of me and on to the empty page. I wrote for 3 straight hours, poem after poem, thought after thought and then that day after day.

Finally I had a collection of poems and thoughts inspired by Twilight. I really wasn’t thinking of printing. At that time it was just an escape for me. A few of my friends read what I had written and they convinced me to publish…..If not for me, then for the Twilight fans. So, I took the standard route, started looking for an agent and publishing house. I sent my manuscript out to a few and received some very nice rejection letters. To be honest, I was really expecting them. With the volume of books being sent, I imagine a new author with such a book of poems isn’t exactly what most houses are looking for.

I had almost given up on my idea until a friend of mine reminded me that she orders books online called E-BOOKS. Being inept in the digital world, I had no idea that this option existed. So I did some research and found a company called “ebookit.com”. I wrote a few emails in search of information on how I could publish my book. They guided me to their website where everything is clearly explained. It was actually very

easy to do. As long as my book was digitalized, it could be made for sale to the public on the most popular e-book websites. For a fee of under $200, my book was digitalized, made for sale and sent to the biggest e-book sellers in the world. I paid the fee, they did the rest.

I thought to myself, “ for a small investment, I can make my dream of publishing my work a reality. I have nothing to lose”.

SO I jumped off the deep end, got my feet wet and now I am swimming in cyberspace…..enjoying every moment.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. You CAN and you WILL! Take that dream of yours and MAKE it your reality. You’d be surprised what a little bit of hard work, dedication and believing in yourself can do.

I will close with this…..

I received my first book review from a stranger…. 5 stars and a glowing review.

Now that makes it all worth it for me.

Navigating The Waters (and Laws) Of Email Marketing

by Michelle Fitz Editor-In-Chief Email marketing seems easy: compile a list of recipients, choose a provider (perhaps you have free campaigns through your email provider), build your campaign and SEND! It’s a lot more complex than that, these days. Since new legislation came into effect in the United States and the United Kingdom, anti-spam regulations are tighter than ever and so are penalties.

Couple that with the fact that there are a number of providers, each with different strengths and weaknesses, and it can be a stormy sea to navigate.

The main players with a hat in the ring include iContact, Aweber, MailChimp, Constant Contact and of course, service companies like Go Daddy who take their piece of the market. Since iContact is pretty much considered one of the least user-friendly options, despite being a paid service, I’m going to focus on Aweber, Mail Chimp and for completeness, I’ll tell you about Constant Contact.

Legislation & Due Diligence Since the 90s, website privacy policies are less courtesy and increasingly essential in the battle to prove compliance with anti-spam laws. If your website doesn’t have one, get one. It is illegal to collect and/or retain data of a personal nature without express awareness/permission from the end user and a mechanism/process for the end user to opt out.

Your privacy policy should indicate exactly how data is collected and also how it will be used, once obtained. This includes that which is collected via direct input through the likes of web forms as well as that which is obtained indirectly, such as the use of location services and cookies or via a paid/affiliate 3rd Party.

I bring this up first and foremost, because if your website is working smarter, it will be one of the key tools in which you obtain analytics to help you understand and improve traffic to your site. Your website is also a key method to directly obtaining and collating subscriber information so between these two tremendously powerful marketing opportunities, right there within the capabilities of your website, you can easily fall

victim to data privacy compliance issues, if you’re unaware of the duties of care required of your site and your organisation.

Regardless of your intention or legitimacy, senders face penalties for unsolicited email, particularly where it is reported directly by a recipient as being junk/spam. It’s important to appreciate the gravity of violations to spam laws and how they are enforced locally and also by your domain registrar.

The rules and penalties will apply, regardless of whether those leads were purchased via a 3rd party, sent to you from an affiliate (even if the person opted into that service), were transferred through acquisition, or organically obtained directly from your end user.

Quality versus Quantity, Imported Subscriber Lists, Penalties So yes, in short, buying leads can be futile, so make it your goal to have quality leads rather than quantity. If you do decide to purchase leads, ensure that the list you invest in consists of people who will at least appreciate the information you have to present..

Moreover, include apologies and concise information to prevent reporting the email and, instead, simply opting out of the list in the future. You’re only a handful of reported emails away from domain suspension, particularly on services like Go Daddy, so bear this in mind when striking the balance between quality and quantity.

Look at it this way - Quality leads look forward to your correspondence, particularly if infrequent but regular and especially if they do not always contain strictly sales pitches.

They are also less likely to unsubscribe and, more importantly, less likely to consider/ report your correspondence as ‘spam’.

Email marketing providers do allow customers to import lists obtained from other sources.

For example, perhaps you have chosen GoDaddy as your preferred email marketing campaign provider because it comes free as part of your hosting package. As part of the service, you have collated a combination of voluntary subscribers via a subscribe button on your website, Facebook page and your contact form, and you also some contacts you purchased via an email marketing list, and perhaps others you have collated via a mixture of networking events (business cards) and further information request forms you have collected via postal service.

Go Daddy will allow you to upload all contacts into the back end of their campaign manager. However, there’s a catch – more than ever, email marketers are paying hefty fines for email marketing campaigns reported to the marketing host as unsolicited or containing ‘spam’ content. Having too many reports via a Go Daddy campaign can result in a complete suspension of your domain name, with penalties of $250+, as a warning, to reinstate the domain.

Marketers are expected to retain records indicating how leads were obtained in order to adequately challenge reports of violations to spam laws, and though this may come as a

shock to some – even if you purchase data from a 3rd party, you can be held liable for violations of anti-spam laws and in fact, most providers will pick these types of leads up in their validation exercise of imported lists and simply remove them anyway.

Growing Out of Your Email Marketing Provider Keeping the same example, let’s say you decide to graduate beyond the realms of Go Daddy’s free email marketing provision. And quite rightly; after all, as you navigate your way through, trying to find the right ‘fit’, you will decide to leap at various points depending on things like: Many people start out with providers like Go Daddy, who, thanks to their own email marketing - Your level of comfort and familiarity with campaigns advertising HTML and CSS benefits to having all your - Decreased reliance on templates and more services ‘under-onedesire to construct campaigns with a look roof’ (domain registration, and feel which is more aligned to your email, email marketing, branding hosting, etc), take up the - Understanding of options and service email marketing campaign function which leaders/providers in the market is often included with - Budget and grasp for balance between hosting (capped at 1,000 providers who allow for free services per month), and uses versus those who charge a fee for their templates which take the service hassle of code away.

However, once you familiarise yourself (and it really is only a matter of time), you will soon find that certain providers do a better job at certain services than others and you may find that you have outgrown the need for rigid, template-based solutions and seek more control over the design of your campaigns.

It’s important to note that it is best to choose a provider that is capable of growing with you but if growth wasn’t anticipated or perhaps a change of provider is simply inevitable, a word of caution: service providers will perform a vet of data imported to their services to verify their source. As a provider they also play a role in complying with anti-spam laws, both where you are located as well as where they are hosted/operate.

Let’s go back to that collated marketing list you have built up for yourself. It’s easy to export your list from your existing service provider, and from there it is nearly as easy to import it into a new service. The question however, is what happens to the data and which provider will serve you best?

The Options We’ve already covered the fact that your list will be vetted by your new service provider.

It’s important to note that you will probably lose some of your subscribers as part of that transfer. It’s part of the due diligence they will impart upon the list you attempt to import and without fail, at least some of your list will seem less than wholesome and simply won’t make it over.

There’s nothing you will be able to do; it’s a part of the hassle for everyone making the jump to a new provider, so just buck up and accept it for what it is – a part of the process.

This is why we recommend going with a provider who will grow with you both in terms of subscriber numbers and the inevitable maturity of your own abilities.

The next decision you need to tackle is whether you want to utilise some of the free options available or paid services.

For Me, There Are 3 Main Front Runners Mail Chimp – this service is a great one for beginners; in fact there are a good number who simply choose to stay on with the service ongoing because of its ease of use and compatibility with common platforms.

Users have access to templates, which is an asset to those who are less comfortable with code and wish to simply get on with creating effective campaigns. It is a free service for up to the first 2,000 subscribers, and seamlessly integrates into popular mediums like PayPal, EventBright and Facebook, and even has simple auto responders which align to the date your subscriber has signed up to your list. It’s also fun. But a word of caution: free services are usually possible due to a lack of service provision to end users, meaning: you are pretty much on your own and other than FAQ (frequently asked questions) and hitting up the likes of Google, if you are on the free service there is limited to no support. On the subject of templates, though those will be handy at first, some will find that the lack of ability to create your own from scratch to be constraining. But if you like Mail Chimp, it is an example of a platform that will grow with you. Max out your 2,000 free subscribers and it’s easy to bump up to a paid plan or to export your list and import to the next provider. You should also know that Mail Chimp will apply its branding to your campaigns, but then again so will most free providers (Go Daddy included for its free plans). It’s on every email you send, and for those of us who are in the business, the view is that this can take away from your core brand and the focus of your subscribers’ attention. To me, it confuses the message: “Oh look at this great update! Oh wow!

Look, I can get free email marketing from Mail Chimp!” Another limitation is the download speed – face it; the more you pack into a single email, the longer it will take to load and display properly. Consider Mail Chimp branding, plus any images you statically upload to your email and suddenly load time can be long and arduous for the end user. The key word here is can. There are plenty of Mail Chimp fans who never experience a blip – just keep things like bandwidth and mail size in mind when you are building your email campaign.

Aweber – This is a paid service, but also a trusted one and highly reliable. That means that instead of junk email folders taking a good chunk of your correspondence, recipients will actually receive your emails first time around. Personally, I rate Aweber. It’s a bit more grown up than Mail Chimp, meaning you that you can choose to use their templates or you can make your own from scratch - and Aweber also integrates with the big players like Facebook, EventBright, etc (like Mail Chimp) but it doesn’t apply all that branding non-sense to your emails. According to Which?, their auto-responder rates above all others and they are much more intelligent that of Mail Chimp. This is where the marketing magic happens - far better than an isolated (and potentially lengthy) email correspondence, take advantage of tempting subscribers to a free mult-part series containing information or facts pertaining to the service or product in which you are selling or specialise. With Aweber, you can time a series of emails in sequential order in advance, saving you both time and effort in communicating with new subscribers while managing ongoing contact with your existing subscriber base. Unlike Mail Chimp, however, there are some changes you should expect to your ways of working. With Aweber, you cannot load images (they must be hosted elsewhere like Flickr or Photobucket) and there are no wizards to set up a new campaign.

Constant Contact – So to recap, Mail Chimp is free for up to 2,000 subscribers whereas Aweber is a paid service from the start. So is Constant Contact, and although it’s not a bad service, I’m not as keen to promote it as I am Aweber. Before I go down that road, let me tell you some good things about Constant Contact. It’s roughly the same price as Aweber and unlike Aweber, you are able to embed images without the use of a hosted link (like Flickr or Photobucket). You can also use their templates (like Mail Chimp) or make your own (as Aweber also offers the option to do so); however my one dislike for Constant Contact – my main gripe is its lack of integration with other apps like Facebook, Paypal and so forth. Now Constant Contact may well be your cup of tea, but for me, my time is of the essence. I appreciate any opportunities for synergies across platforms.

This one failure is a huge, crippling, ‘miss’ in my book. However, it does come with an autoresponder (although it doesn’t make sequencing a very easy task) and it also makes attempts to be a bit more Mail Chimp but without all the branding. Lastly, Constant Contact is not for the new or faint hearted. Although, like, Aweber, support is available, the interface leaves much to be desired and can be difficult to navigate for most users.

Yeah, yeah. I know that sometimes we’re all buried with too many assignments, but even these need to be managed, communicated, and prioritized. As a project manager I’m always stumped when it’s the same people that are late with work over and over. And, ha-ha, it’s the same people I see on Twitter all day posting comments about “how freakin busy” they are. Really? Too busy for work, but not too busy to Twitter about beer and donuts? In case you haven’t picked up on the theme, yes, I have someone who works with me that Twitters about beer, donuts, football, too much work, and other nonsense… and then they’re late with assignments.

Whining doesn’t do anything for you and especially for others. Suck it up and get it done. It’s called work for a reason. In fact, I think things would be much better if we mandated a project ground rule of “No whiners. No pouters. No crybabies.”

2. Do the hard part first.

Usually the thing we dread the most is the thing we need to do the most. When you’re buried with assignments you have to prioritized, but usually the most important thing is the hardest thing. Do that one first. Or as Mark Twain allegedly said, “Eat a live toad first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen the rest of the day.” In other words, once you get the thing done you’ve been whining about, delaying, and dreading, you’ll be more productive the rest of the day.

3. Create goals.

Goals are a great way to plan your day, your life. Create objectives, write ‘em down, and then get it done. Chunk out your day and set accomplishments for each chunk of the day: I’ll get this report done by 10. I’ll complete these calls by 11AM. I’ll finish this assignment by noon.

4. Be productive.

Productivity and efficiency aren’t the same thing. If you had to paint 600 identical rooms in a hotel the first few

rooms might take you seven or eight hours each. As you become more efficient, however, you’d develop a system and do the work faster. This is the learning curve – as tasks are repeated efficiency goes up.

Productivity, however, is what you produce per day, per week, or whatever time period you want. The fallacy of the learning curve is that just because you’re more efficient doesn’t mean you’ll be more productive.

With the painting analogy, you can paint more efficiently, but if the customer is only expecting you to paint one room per day you might kick off earlier, take your time, or snooze a little. My point being, when you’re efficient find ways to be more productive too.

5. Single Task.

Everyone gets excited when they talk about multitasking. It’s a myth. If you’re writing a report and doing email at the same time look again. You’re working on the report now. Now you’re reading email.

The report is waiting for you to hop back over and finish. And then there’s the Internet, the phone calls, the meetings.

Forget it. If you want to get things done pick one thing and do just that one thing.

Shut down your email. Shut off your phone (GASP!). And get to work.

So there. Now quit whining and get some work done. And if I see one more Twitter post about beer and donuts I’m going to do the hard part and singletask someone’s day.

In a run of different posts lately from various bloggers, there’s been something to consider about the way we work which has been bugging me. Doug Shaw recently talked about how an old teacher told him he would fail, and what this meant for him. David Goddin picked up on this and wrote about how school children are meant to make mistakes and they shouldn’t be punished for this. And here’s where I really start to get stuck.

got our hat on backwards, and have had it so for many years. Complete project X successfully and you’ll be rewarded with a bonus. Achieve Objectives S through to Z and you’ll get a bonus. Implement program B and D and you’ll get a bonus. And if you don’t, you get nothing, your credibility will drop like a lead balloon, you’ll likely not get selected for other projects, you’ll be branded a failure and your name will be mud for a while. So, do a good job, ok? Wow, that’s a shit storm you never considered having to deal with.

Quite a statement for someone in L&D? Well let’s narrow that focus some. Two things become paramount when you think about what is it that drives organisations.

Wealth, and the fear of failure. The adage goes something like… “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”. And this is what I fear.

For all the wealth of knowledge available on wellbeing, diversity, positive psychology and engagement, the challenge isn’t in selling these in to organisations.

The challenge lies in making organisations do better because there are better ways to act.

So what would happen if this were thought about differently? Let’s take some things into consideration:

Many organisations already do a good job of trying to help the work environment be a better place. L&D plans, CSR plans, management training plans, objectives and appraisal plans – all good stuff. But they’re not rewarded in the right ways. When it comes to motivation, reward and recognition, we’ve just

- companies want profit first and foremost - they want people to be successful so they can make this profit - they need to invest in people in order to help them get successful Ok, I can accept those things are a given and won’t change. So what does need to change? The way we fundamentally deal with failure at work. Bob’s been given a project to deliver. He’s had all the right perceived resources he needs to make it a success and doesn’t deliver.

There is a school of thought that will argue that he needed to have been set up for success before the project began/during the project. But let’s assume that happened, and still he failed. Then what?

Response A would say – get him on an improvement plan, don’t give him another project until he’s capable again. Response B would say this. We are all capable of taking someone through the mill and berating them on what a bad job they did and what impact it had to the business. What needs to happen is not a run down of all the good things/bad things that happened. What needs to happen is Bob has to be given a chance to do some scenario planning using the same project, with a coach and together they go through as if it were a fresh project. This would likely take between 1-3 days of coaching in this respect. And the learning that Bob would go through would be immense. Feedback about the seriousness of the failure would form part of this, but is not the focus.

You have to have the fear that if you don’t perform you’ll be sacked don’t you? Well I say yah boo to that.

And if you want to talk engagement, you’re looking at a far more effective way of engaging and motivating a workforce because you’re truly showing that you’re investing in them. The bad times are just as important as the good times, and how we deal with them is what defines us as an organisation, and as a people.

We know we learn from mistakes. We also know that when you’re motivated to do work, you will produce a better quality of work than if you’re not. I also know I’m talking in ideals above, and the likelihood of this forming reality would take serious commitment and investment.

In these austere times, that won’t happen. Even during the boom times I’m not saying this is the only solution to dealing with failure. With it probably won’t happen. But here’s what I do know. Whatever ‘it’ is – some more banging of heads, I’m isn’t happening now. sure we can come up with more options. But hopefully it illustrates the point I am trying to make.

If you then consider the influence this has on the wider team, then you’re looking at a highly positive transaction taking place. Team members would see that Bob was given responsibility to accomplish something. They see that he hasn’t delivered. And they see that as opposed to being beaten up for it, he’s encouraged to learn from it to do better next time. Wait a Page 28

The good ways mean you enjoy the work you do, you have a reason to be motivated, and the output you produce will be better. The bad ways mean none of that happens, and generally things are very selfish. I’m in the camp for doing things the right way.

Even though our home decor overall is primarily a range of contemporary and traditional, if you read my belt chair tutorial, then you’ve heard that I like to have a few interesting “character” pieces of furniture in each room, too. In addition to our “regular” furniture, I try to have something antique, something mid century mod, and something a little funky in each room. I like contrast. Well, our master suite is not an exception. Our chests of drawers are contemporary, lamps are traditional, flooring style is modern, dark espresso, and the settee that we reupholstered is antique. Really antique; like early 19th century Italian antique. Also in our master suite is a vanity, now a funkier vanity. I’ll get around to photographing the rest of the room soon, but for now, I just want to talk about this deco vanity.

This vanity isn’t from a resale shop; it’s actually been handed down through the family.

Perhaps my grandmother could tell us what its original stained finish looked like, but I’m pretty sure it had long since been painted over prior to my lifetime. By the time it was given to me, it was wearing a coat of pea green paint and had spent its last several years in my dad’s garage storing my little sister’s costumy “dress-up” stuff from her childhood. I really liked the lines and heft of the vanity. It’s BIG for a deco age vanity, and structurally it is in great shape, especially for being almost a hundred years old! Shortly after receiving it, several years ago, I painted it black. The sides and drawer fronts are FLAT black latex, and the top surface and hardware are HIGH GLOSS enamel.

Recently, I saw a few dresser conversions that really caught my eye and I just KNEW I had to add a bit of typography to a piece of furniture. (If you want to see what inspired me, hop over to Bliss Ranch and check out Bliss’s Libation Station created from an old dresser and her Kodak dresser! Amazing aren’t they?! Love it!) I was inspired by Bliss, but given that I have a one year old daughter underfoot, finding the time and space to paint by hand the way she does is difficult impossible for me at this stage. So, I did it MY way, with vinyl sign lettering that I cut using my sign machine. You know that in addition to being a stay at home mom, I freelance, selling and installing vinyl signs and vehicle graphics, right?

I wanted to stick with the “vanity” theme on the “vanity.” I brainstormed: Vanity. Primp. Groom. Beautify. Smarten. …with a dashing flourish…Then, I created and installed the graphic. If you were just wanting to see the dresser and hear the history, you can stop reading now. However, if you want to see the sign vinyl process, here you go: Page 32

1) I designed the graphic in Adobe Illustrator.

2) I put the design in FlexiSign and sent it to my cutter.

3) Here is my machine cutting. It can cut any graphic up to 30 feet wide by 300 feet long.

We keep our sign cutter in an armoire that used to hold our tv, but now all of our tvs are mounted to walls. It is a great way to hideaway the machine when it’s not in use, this is especially important to me, since it is in our front room/library/office at home.

4) I “weed” the cut image. See, the machine doesn’t print; it cuts. The material is like big roll of stickers on a sheet of waxed paper backing. Through precision adjustment, the machine’s blade is set at an exact pressure that it will cut through the sticker (sign vinyl) without cutting the paper backing. So, I pull the excess away, by hand, leaving only the Page 33 cut graphic on the waxed paper backing.

5) Here is what it looks like after the weeding process.

6) I “mask� the image. I cover the entire graphic in masking tape. Really wide masking tape. This is an essential step. It would be impossible to move and install each little piece individually and expect it all to line up properly. Covering it in masking tape allows me to move ALL of the letters at once.

7) It is a total of three layer at this point: paper, sign vinyl, and masking tape.

8) I peel away the waxed paper backing. Now, it is just the sticky sign vinyl and masking tape.

9) I stuck it to the side of the furniture and used a squeegee to smooth it all into place.

10) I slowly pull away the top layer of masking tape. See, the sign vinyl’s adhesive is MUCH stronger than the adhesive on the masking tape, so the masking tape pulls away leaving the sign vinyl stuck in place. Neat, huh? Now, you know.

11) The glittery, gold sign vinyl lettering is permanently adhered to the vanity!

At home, non-commercial, I use my sign machine for quotes on mirrors, labeling, kids’ projects, etc. I’ll show you some of that stuff later; for now, I’m tired of typing.

I started my professional life as a mere cosmetologist at the age of 17. I moved into the field of professional make-up artist within the arts and entertainment field. It wasn't until later in my life I sought a formal education and I am from Biloxi, Mississippi which is a professional qualifications. has always seemed to be a series of events that opened whatever door I was meant to cross through at the time.

My background was one that was steeped in dire poverty and severely broken home. I knew that whatever I ended up doing with my life I KNEW I did not want to 'settle' for anything less than spectacular. I couldn't wait to shake the dust off my shoes and escape the confines of that small Southern town and narrow mindset. My dreams were bigger than anything my hometown could have ever provided for me as it stood in those days. I didn't know WHAT I wanted to be but I knew it had to be exciting, out of Biloxi, not involve marrying some 'Good Old Boy' and having a passel of kids,

and definitely out of the poverty I grew up in. I'd say the biggest influence my humble beginnings gave me was that it made me unafraid to try (and possibly fail or lose my shirt). I knew no matter what mistakes I made, even if I went bankrupt and lost everything; I would NEVER again be in the hand to mouth existence I had grown up in.

You've lived in a variety of states and even moved continents!

Can you tell us a bit about that? Â So many of our readers have started over, again and again. Â How did you find the experience of moving around while trying to get your foot in the door professionally or as an entrepreneur?

I left home shortly after I turned 21. I got on a plane to Honolulu, Hawaii with $250. in my pocket and absolutely no clue what I was going to do or where I would live once I got there. Why Hawaii?It was the furthest away I could get from my Mississippi life without leaving the US. It sounded exotic and exciting to me.

That began the love affair for me with travel and that constant Pioneer Spirit that I still struggle against. It's hard for me to stay in one place for more than a couple years. I get hungry to experience more and more. If I hadn't had children I'm sure I'd still be living a nomad existence. I think in many ways I was addicted to the excitement that followed moving to new places and forging your path there. It was almost like being re-born each time it happened. I can't say I'd recommend such a life to anyone else because you're never truly building anything solid.....you're throwing down a foundation and a wall or two and then moving on to do the same thing in another place. That's not building a life; it's avoidance of it all becoming too real. It took me years to learn that I was pretty much Peter Pan. Professionally all that did for me was give me a very long and varied resume.

out as a company that imported a handful of select American bath & body brands such as Villainess, Arcana, Possets, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (BPAL), and a few others. I had no intention of building my own line back then. Of all those brands from the early days, the only brand I still carry and will always carry (in addition to Posh Brats) is Villainess. Â I saw a demand for natural products and I belonged to an online forum of people that were obsessed and excited by natural products for various reasons. For some it was the only thing they could use on their skin, for others it was a matter of supporting small business, for others it was about being green and environmentally conscious and all of us didn't want to support products that used animal testing.

Through this forum I was introduced to new product lines. The forum was UK and European based so the search was always there for exciting companies that could feed our respective addictions.

I saw a trend in that there was such huge demand for these products from the US and so very few British brands that were doing anything new and exciting. I started to import and it snowballed quicker than I could believe. My entire house was filled with boxes of beauty products and my husband suggested I get Many people assume that a woman a little retail shop. She's in your face with her femininity and you just can't deny her appeal and she makes people smile.

She may have been based on me but Lady Posh has become her own entity.

She represents real women with real curves and real desires for the best.

It's all very tongue in cheek. Back home in Mississippi my girlfriends and I always referred to one another as 'brat' in an affectionate way as a greeting. I was always the 'brat' with the big dreams and expensive tastes....always obsessed with haute couture, champagne living and anything else that seemed to represent the complete opposite of what I had grown up with. So early on I started jokingly referring to myself as the 'Posh Brat'. So while many folks think that it's a reference to a certain level of society...in actuality it was all about me poking fun at myself. I'm the Posh Brat....through reputation and deed and sheer desire. (lol) The name came first and I knew I needed an amazing logo to go with such a name. I've always admired the artwork of a great American artist named Les Toil. He does the most beautiful bombshell style art but in a totally unique way of showcasing real women with real bodies....not some stick thin "ideal". I contacted him and we threw

How much would you say your qualifications and training paved the way for your success of your line, versus trial and error in applying some of the basic skills you learned through your training?

Cosmetic Chemistry gives me the scientific know-how to take A, mix it with B and come out with C.....it's the bones. However, that alone doesn't give you much advantage when you're trying to create a natural line because the beauty industry I cut my teeth in wasn't about natural...it was all chemical. It was exactly what Posh Brats today isn't. Â My chemistry background comes in handy for me when I want to work out things like percentages or to be able to look at a list of ingredients and know what each role is and how they work together...like what are surfectants, emulsifiers, saponifers, lipids, etc.

Recipes for creams, scrubs, soaps, etc are not unlike cooking. Once Page 41

So can't rely on we took the last bit of our savings, I wrote up a business plan and we took it to our bank manager and got financing.

It still amazes me we were able to get financing. At the time I didn't even have a permanent spouse visa for the UK so no credit profile or banking history here at all. I sat down in that office at Royal Bank of Scotland and poured my heart out to the business banking manager. I told him about my dream and my vision, I threw projections, formulas and what few numbers I had at him and bless his heart, he took a chance on me. At that point my husband and I had sunk over 30k of our own money into Posh Brats. The bank gave us 20K more and that's what I went into production with. It sounds like a lot but when you're building an entire line and producing it, getting toxicology reports for it and all the rest...that is bare bones. I have to hand it to my husband because without him Posh Brats would never have been born. He believed enough in me to take money from his savings account and to borrow against some of the equity of our home to get me started.

You have recently sought PETA certification; how important is this to Posh Brats and to you personally for your brand?

Now it's easy for me to say I'll never use, nor have I ever used animal testing; but this extends so much further. this commitment also means that we won't deal with any companies for our raw materials or ingredients that have not also taken this pledge.

Your network quickly becomes very small because you'd be surprised how many companies out there claim to be cruelty-free and yet they buy raw materials from companies that still use animal testing.

We have seen trends of customers departing from chemically-derived products and those which have been mass-produced, to that of locally sourced and what we call "the Etsy Effect". Why do you think consumers have been drawn to locally produced and more old-fashioned manufacturing techniques?

I think there is a huge push of people out there that want to return to simpler times when things were handmade, the quality was better, Animal testing is something that has and you knew exactly what was going into always bothered me....always. As something. People are much much as I used to love all those designer more aware now of what they are putting brands I refuse to buy them into and onto their bodies. I any longer because most of them still test don't think it's entirely different to on animals. PETA is a major someone preferring that player in the business industry and they home-baked loaf of bread with a tiny bit of work tirelessly to promote burnt crust that Granny animal welfare and rights. Companies makes to that chemical laden fluffy white listed with them either signed loaf that won't go stale for PETA’s statement of assurance or two weeks. in the same way soap had been made for centuries. It was made with love and care by someone who has taken the time to learn these ancient methods and by someone who personally CARES if you like it and you come back for more. People love that...they love that connection with you. It's a very personal thing in a time when the internet has made our lives much more impersonal.

To be honest I don't worry about the big brands...we are apples and oranges. They are chemical laden, animaltested, mass produced detergents with big budgets and no soul.

They have their consumers and I have mine and the two rarely mingle.

As far as other companies that do what I do; the beauty of this industry is there are so many ways to make something unique to you. Was having your own line always your dream and if so, how long did it take you to put it into action? Â When you did really start pursuing this as a career, how long did it take you to really come into your own and start to be successful?

I think my dream was to create something bigger than me that would outlast my time on this Earth.

It's always been my dream to carve my niche into the world but I can't say it was in product form. I always thought it would be in some form of art, music or written word. I spent about 2 years developing the Posh Brats product line and it's on-going. To be competitive in this market you are pressed to always create something new, something different, something exciting. Your basic formulas don't really change but the way in which you present them is constantly changing...just like fashion. Scents and ingredients come in and out of vogue. At Posh Brats we tend to forge our own path and try to set trends rather than follow them. I see lots of companies coming up around us that are obviously influenced and it's nice to know we've inspired others.

First of all I would have believed in myself earlier. I wouldn't have wasted so much time and money investing into importing so many brands.

That first 30k that went into Posh Brats was a complete waste of money...I may as well thrown it into a big pile and lit fire to it. It was all about self-doubt and fear. It took me reaching the brink of knowing I had to shut my doors as Posh Brats the company who imports other brands and re-open as Posh Brats the company who produces their own brand. Laughingly, my determination NOT to ever work for someone else again got me off my hind-end and made me put my formulas onto the shelf. They talk about putting the 'fear of God' into someone, mine was the fear of 'The Man' and having to go back and work for him.

Do you ever have internship/work experience opportunities and if so, what kinds of skills could an intern learn from your organisation?

At this time that is not something we offer.

We've done work with the Princes Trust in the past and helped train young people in the area of retail management but production isn't something I've allowed outsiders into at all. That's my domain.

What advice would you give to young Posh Brats has only this past year actually aspiring businesswomen, no matter what their industry or skill, when finally gone into what can it comes to getting started be deemed as 'success'...so that was 4 on such a big dream and putting a plan years into our journey. I only just now am starting to feel like we'll be in place to make them reality? around for the long run and I don't have to go out and get a 'real' job. Be prepared and willing to give up your life as you know it....maybe not forever but for a good portion you will If you had to do it all over again, what be eating, sleeping, wearing, and living would you have done differently in getting Posh Brats started? your business. No one else can do it

justice the way you can. Don't expect it to build itself overnight...it takes work beyond all possible imagining to forge your way. Research is your friend, social media is priceless, you cannot have too many contacts.

Make friends with people in your industry, know your competition, guard your trade secrets closely, get all the certifications and memberships with guilds within your industry that you can. Get to know your account manager and business bank manager personally and keep in touch with them. They will go to bat for you when you need it, for good or for bad keep them up to date on where you are and what your plans are. Most importantly never ever ever forget your customers and provide the very best customer service you can; sometimes at your own expense too! Make every person feel like they are valued.

What legacy would you like to leave either for your progeny or your field of specialism, through your work or your company?

Neither of my children hold any interest in Posh Brats so I doubt they'll follow my footsteps. I hope that when I depart this life, Posh Brats will be one of those brands that continues on as a major contributor in bringing the beauty industry back to the basics and celebrating the perfection of nature. Nature provided everything we will ever need for our bodies, inside and out.....there is no better way.

I was featured in a book called 101+ Things To Do with Glitter - I was really honoured and enjoyed the experience.

Confidence is nature's unspoken signal for women. It says 'I am not weak!' When you display a body language and speak with certainty, you are putting across to all and sundry that you are not to be trifled with. At the same time it can and will change you from the inside out; by putting that into practice not only will you appear as a confident and strong woman but you will also feel it. The more you feel it, the more you are able to empower yourself to do more. Every woman needs to take charge of herself because no one else will do it for you.

Your products have such great, fun names! How do you come up with the names for your products?

I have no idea. I read too much....I design products in my dreams. I have gotten out of bed and driven to my workshop in my nightgown to make something I dreamt about. I keep a pad of paper by my bed to scribble things on in the night. Some mornings I wake up and it makes NO sense.

I think the Olympic games will do a lot for sports. My kids have been more interested in getting out and enjoying their favourite activities since we watched the games as a family, especially Tennis. Never have I seen such a transformation in our family. My Ian puts his DSi down now regularly on a Saturday just to make time to play. Really hoping it sticks! - Amile, Provence (FR).

It was good to see the U.S.A. represent so strongly.

I attended the men’s 4x100 relay and even though Michael Phelps missed out on the gold, the atmosphere was electric and inspirational. Great to see such sportsman(and woman)ship and a great example for all of us. - Alicia, Dallas (USA).

I didn’t get to go to the Olympic games, although I did put our family’s name in for tickets, but I cannot tell you how much the games affected this nation! London Paralympics 2012

Well, well, well. Just when I thought I'd never see another Olympics, I was lucky enough to see the Paralympics!

This time was different because instead of going back to Olympic Park, we (my Olympics friend Justin and I) went to the ExCel Centre in London.

For me personally, because I'd already been to Olympic Park, the ExCel Centre experience wasn't quite as exciting. Once you were inside you stayed inside, unlike Olympic Park where you could walk around outside and explore the area.

Still, the day pass for the ExCel was great because it allowed you to see any of the events which were there that day. It was general admission seating so as long as you got to your event early, you could get a good seat.

We were booked into a specific session to see men's sitting volleyball. First we saw Russia vs. Morocco and then Iran vs. Boznia and Herzegovina.

Russia beat Morocco after only 3 sets (there were 5 sets in all). Â One thing I learned is that unlike regular volleyball, in sitting volleyball a player can hit the ball with any part of his body. When I saw someone kick the ball I thought I was seeing things!

The moment Iran Won

Iran vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina was a lively game, due in part to the very enthusiastic Iranians in the crowd! After awhile the Bosnians were making themselves known as well and it got very loud indeed. But Iran won the game.

The game for the gold medal was a few days later, and both teams played each other again.

Iran was expected to win but Bosnia and Herzegovina won and beat them to the gold.

Sitting volleyball was fantastic. I must admit that having never seen it before I thought it would look odd. But after they began playing I completely forgot that they were sitting. It just looked like a regular volleyball game to me.

The only criticism I have is that between every volley, when there was a gap in play, loud thumping music was blasted to fill the void. It was totally unnecessary because the gaps were only for a few seconds each time. I suppose it was their way of pumping up the crowd, but we didn't need any help!

After the volleyball we decided to see wheelchair fencing. I'd never seen fencing and had no idea of the rules.

Each match was only 3 minutes long and was won after one person scored 15 hits (or "stabs" as I would call them!) in one match, so the matches were quick. We were able to see some of the medal ceremony which was wonderful!

The Paralympians showed that anyone can do anything despite physical limitations. And one thing's for sure: the word "disabled" didn't cross anyone's lips that day.

Irelan Tam Irelan Tam FCMA, CGMA, regional FD for Johnson & Johnson Medical Asia Pacific, began her career at Hong Kong Jardine, and moved to various accounting functions across different companies before joining Johnson & Johnson Hong Kong as accounting manager in 1992.

During the past 18 years at Johnson & Johnson, she has worked across a variety of functions, including warehouse and delivery, supply chain, OTC, purchasing, finance, general administration, HR and IM. She finished her Doctorate in business administration in 2005 when she was working on the efficient health care response project with a local health hospital authority.

Currently, she has taken up an assignment for SAP and business performance management implementation for Johnson & Johnson Medical Asia Pacific.

In Leadership Johnson & Johnson Medical Asia Pacific Brought to You By Dealing with a demanding job Work-life balance is always a challenge when working across multiple time zones. My existing assignment is related to ERP and BI implementation which requires me to work with colleagues in different geographical areas – Australia, India and Hong Kong – so I often work late and am away from home a lot. I also have two young children and I find balancing my working life with my family life to be the biggest challenge of my career.

Since we have time and budget constraints, there is a lot of stress. The main way I deal with the stress is by exercising every day. Going jogging in the morning gives me fresh air and a clear mind to plan and think over issues, and it makes me feel more energetic for the rest of the day.

Glass ceiling?

My organisation focuses a lot on diversity and I don’t see any discrimination. We have a lot of women leaders in the organisation – we have three major lines of business and two of them are run by women; the company group chairman is female. In most countries Johnson & Johnson is involved in, at least half the board members are women; the exceptions are Japan and India.

Training and development I was lucky enough to be selected for my company’s leadership programme and this has helped me to develop skills in different areas of the business, such as project management, sales and strategic marketing. The training programmes also focus on ‘situation leadership’ – looking at the role of the leader in different situations, how to work with employees, and how to communicate well especially with different cultures.

I’ve had many good bosses during my career who’ve taught me a lot and given me many opportunities in different functions, including supply chain, warehouse, HR and IT systems implementation. They have also given me a lot of coaching, have encouraged me to study, and provided a lot of support and guidance. I am still learning to be a patient and good listener, in order to capture the ‘voice of the customers’ for my project.

When working across different countries, I had an unofficial mentor in the sales and marketing field working with me on a project with the local health authority. She helped me a lot in understanding how sales and marketing works.

This has really encouraged me to realise the importance of making the customer central to our business, and therefore focus on creating value for our customers by providing quality products and service solutions.

Broadening horizons Management accounting now is very different from previously: it has become more strategic and focuses on partnering with various organisational functions on driving business performance. Therefore, it’s critical to understand the industry you work in and not just the finance function.

For example, when we’re working on efficient health care response, I have gone to hospitals to learn about the hospital supply chain business process; talking to nurses and supply chain professionals helps me understand their ‘pain points’ at work. In order to become successful in our jobs we have to understand the business processes of the company’s different functions and how we can create value for our customers.

'For women in industry, the most important thing is to continue learning' Also, we have to fit in with the culture of the organisation. We have to understand the company’s strategic imperatives and how to contribute to the organisation’s success as an individual business unit interacting with the whole organisation.

For example, my organisation focuses on customer satisfaction, so, rather than just thinking about accounting and finance functions, we have to think about how to partner with various functions and to apply our skills to achieve customer satisfaction.

I think for most women working in the industry, the most important thing is to continue learning. It really broadens my scope when working across different Page 56

cultures and different business functions.

Setting goals When working up the career path, we must have our aspirations and a positive attitude. I always believe that when I have an inspirational goal, I work towards the goal despite all obstacles and challenges – that’s been my mantra for many years.

We have to go after opportunities and seize them. Whatever assignments have been given to me, I always work with my boss to determine the key tasks and how to achieve them. For example, when I was made responsible for the supply chain, I set some goals for myself – for things I needed to learn and how I can get help from experts in the organisation.

Managing people It’s important to collaborate with different functions and build trusted relationship with others but managing people is not an easy job. What I’ve learnt when working with a diverse team is to identify each person’s strengths and weaknesses and determine how to exploit their talents in the areas that can maximise their potential.

Through the company leadership programme, I have learnt about how to motivate and empower people to achieve their goals. Sometimes, we have to take risks and let our employees make their own decisions and perhaps let them fail so they can learn from their mistakes.

I really like working with people in various functions as I am always fascinated with the innovative ways in which people deal with difficult and challenging situations.

Thus, to be successful in your career it is vital to build successful relationships and inspire others to aim for the same goals for driving company success.

I have a long way to go to feeling whole again, but I know that losing some of this weight would really give me the boost I need. Patti, how can I stop compulsively eating? It’s ruining my life. ” Love is Not Ice Cream Dear Love, This is a complex question. There are no magic fixes in weight loss and in fact, I’m not even going to say “calories in, calories out” because the truth is, everyone has a system, a method or a trick that makes weight loss work for them. Our Wellness Editor, Charlene SanJenko is a great person to start with, if you need a fitness and nutrition plan. Notice, I said nutrition - not diet.

I’m not going to push one plan over another. Charlene is a colleague and a fitness professional, so I think her column should be a great help to you, with new tips and tricks for you every month and right here in the magazine too, which might prove fairly convenient!

But to give you my views on how to get through this, as a counsellor I’d like to invite you to decipher why you have taken on these behaviors and what exactly compulsive eating does for you. Does it make you feel whole? Do you feel less empty? Are you nervous or anxious about something? Our emotions play a huge part in ending a bad habit, whether it be something serious like drinking to fill a void or even nail biting or eating. Over eating, or compulsive eating is doing something for you whether it is filling a void or comforting you, so let’s work on breaking that together.

This is the hardest part.

You need to become aware of what you are doing and once you do, you need a plan in place to do something else instead of resuming old habits. Some people have screamed into pillows, listened to music, gone for a walk, etc. The best advice I can give you is to find something healthy that replaces that behavior. For some people, chewing gum helps. For others, I’d like to caution that sometimes chewing gum can cause you to feel hungrier due to stimulation of gastric juices. One of the best things I’ve heard anyone recommend was to try and associate exercise with stress release (even if you have to lie to yourself - fake it till you make it, or really give yourself a pep talk in the early days). Think of exercise as an indulgent activity you do, just for yourself.

Time alone that only you benefit from and which gives you immense relaxation. This is going to be your number one hurdle, but I know you can do it, with practice. Even if you struggle for a while or have false starts, remember it took you a while to develop this habit. Commit to a few months of breaking it and you will increase your chances of success.

Next, I want you to connect your mind with your stomach, and then both with your hands.

That may sound funny, but right now, your eating is mindless. You are no longer responding to physical hunger. You are in a habit of reaching for food either when you literally see it in front of you or when you feel something (anger, remorse, sadness, etc) and you are not able to recognize physical hunger. So to reconnect your mind with your stomach, and again with your hands, I want you to make a habit of carrying a small notebook or record in your smartphone and writing down every single thing you put in your mouth for two weeks. Don’t lie to yourself.

Write it all down. You will start to see the large volumes of calories that you are actually consuming. Try to use the feeling of actual hunger as your signal to eat instead of time, or simply habit.

I recommend a great app for your iPhone (you can use it online too) called Calorie Count by About. It is an online database of foods and calories which makes logging your calories very easy. Next, find an online calculator for BMR - this is the number of calories you burn if you stay in bed all day. Eat less than this number and you will lose weight. Add on physical activity, and lose even more. Don’t worry about losing weight, focus on the success made every day that you stay below that number when you eat. Try to eat as clean as possible, meaning eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables and generally eating foods as close to how nature intended as possible. If you struggle with portion control, try healthy microwave meals so that your portions at dinner time are pre-measured (something you may struggle with at first). Lastly, repetition.

You need to do this every day and live the rest of your life healthfully. There will always be sweets and sinful foods. Love, you already know what those taste like. You don’t need those anymore! Visualize yourself in that outfit or at a special event and remind yourself that achieving that will be SO MUCH more satisfying than any food could ever be.

I know that you have a masters degree, but how did you balance your time around all the things in your life?

Did you ever lack the confidence to start school? I don’t know why I am feeling this way but it is all overwhelming.”

Alisha Sibert, Alaska Dear Alicia, I want to commend you for making time for this important step in your life.

You’re suffering in the confidence department, but that’s fixable! Whether it’s fear of failure or perhaps someone has told you things in your past that made you doubt your own capabilities, you need to decide for yourself that you are worthy and capable of accomplishing your dreams.

You covered a few areas in your question and a little tip I found handy when I was at school was to accept that I was human and was going to have a life, but that I needed to schedule myself to make sure that I could estimate the time needed to do each task or activity I was committing to do.

Sometimes, I had to prioritize but having my week planned out in a calendar really helped. Go ahead and block out class time, lunch and any other parts of your routine schedule. You can make this as detailed as you want. Some medical students even put in times they shower!!

The key is, put it down on paper and so you can see at a glance where you are supposed to be, when and how much time you have that is ‘yours’ which can be prioritized throughout the week or the academic year. Be sure that you write down times for rest and any vacation times and always honor those as sacred, non-negotiable times because you deserve them! When you feel tempted to procrastinate, etc, start counting down to your scheduled down time.

“Only 2 more hours and I can leave the library and sleep!”

Sometimes when we are lacking in confidence, it really helps to force yourself in front of a mirror or lie down as you tell yourself of other achievements you’ve made in your life. It’s hard to see our achievements sometimes but I assure you that you have had at least one in your lifetime. Think back to something that was difficult and how anxious you felt before you started, and contrast that feeling to the way you felt when you mastered it. Focus on that feeling and tell yourself you are going to achieve this too!

Musings From A Life Lived Well

Old Wives’ Tales There are many things that people have in common, from family to family, generation to generation, even country to country. Since time began people have passed down advice or directions and warnings to their loved ones for different situations.

If you were to randomly pick a family; chances are that they will have at least one old wives tale that has been handed down through the years. No matter how crazy these tales are someone always believes in their authenticity and creditability. Once again it is another instance of kids learning by example, with some of the stories we have told them I can understand how they would think there was a chance of us believing their far fetched out of this world "I didn't do it" explanations. These tales are a part of our family history and in turn, a part of us.

When it comes to pregnancy and babies there are hundreds of these tales that range from sensible to totally outrageous.

If a suspended needle and thread over a pregnant belly swings around in a circle it’s a girl, if it goes back and forth in a Page 68

straight line it’s a boy. Carrying the baby high means pink is in your future and carrying low means you will need to buy blue.

Some of the more far-fetched old wives tales include the one about having a knife under your bed while in labour will ease the pain. The only way I can see this tale being true is if the woman finds comfort in the fact that if the pain gets to bad she can just grab the knife.

My Grandmother told me that if you cut an infants fingernails with a nail clipper before they are a year old they will grow up to be a thief. If this turns out to be true then I better start saving for bail instead of college.

If a baby has its days and nights mixed up (sleeping in the day and awake all night) you can turn the baby head over heels once and it will straighten out their schedule.

According to some old wives if you tickle a baby’s feet too much the baby will grow up with a stutter.

Of course there are the general old wives tales dealing with everyday life. Putting a hat on a bed or shoes on a table will bring bad luck. Never rock a rocking chair with no one in it or there will be a death. You must leave a house through the same door you entered or you will have bad luck.

On the other hand, if you carry around an acorn it will bring good luck and ensure a long life.

If you have a wart cut it off and bury it in the backyard with a penny and it won’t grow back.

(If it does grow back do you bury it again with a dollar? You know, inflation and everything.)

If you sew a swan’s feather into your husband’s pillow it will ensure his faithfulness to you. If it were only that easy!

Since Halloween is only a few short weeks away this article would not be complete without some good ol' fashion spooky superstitions.

The stage has been set as well as the mood with store shelves full of candy, costumes and creepy decorations. Horror films are saturating the movie theaters as well as the weekend television line up.

Children are drooling as they dream about the abundance of candy coming their way at the end of the month and somehow reach a sugar high just on the anticipation.

Before sunset on October 31st walk around your house three times backwards

and counter clockwise and this is said to ward off evil spirits.

I think I have succeeded judging by the number of clients who sit comfortable in the sofa playing the guitar, taking inspiration from artfully displayed objects or having fun with my Spanish maracas”. Eva’s goal is to encourage people to be far more adventurous and have fun when decorating their homes, with a ‘no rules’ instinctive approach to putting interior schemes together. “I believe that if you only buy what you absolutely love, your home will somehow come together, pulled by the invisible but powerful thread of your personal taste. Kitchen Sink Soup It is officially Fall, or Autumn, in the Northern Hemisphere. You can feel the air getting cooler; well, you could if you actually lived in a place that gets cold, but here in the south what we call fall is when the temperature drops down into the 80’s. But hey, we can still have cool weather food (as we run the air conditioner). One of my favorites is Kitchen Sink Soup. My youngest daughter asked me once why we called it Kitchen sink soup when we don’t put the sink in it. Kids! They do say the darndest things. Yes I replied we throw in everything but…(I had to actually finish the sentence. Even then, I got a quizzical look.)

As with all things tasty, it’s the basics that determine how the main thing turns out. So the broth is the main thing.

Put in the broth sautéed onions & garlic; carrots, butter & the lowly celery cut up. Cut the tops with the leaves off and use them to flavor the soup but take out after the soup is done.

(Because of its antispasmodic properties, celery is good for all lung conditions, including asthma and bronchitis.

Not only is celery good for you it goes great with Southern staples such as Pimento Cheese spread, Peanut butter and my new fav Pepper jelly with cream cheese. Really, I could eat the entire bowl. Whoops I did that already.

Now stew the broth with veggies as you get the meats ready. I use left over meats that I have stashed in the freezer cause the purpose of this soup is to: Use. Up. Leftovers. I throw in the meats as I unwrap them. In this soup I used turkey, pork chops, chicken & whatever I had in the freezer. btw, If all you have is Spam, DO IT. Do not say gross until you have been so hungry that Spam is a delicacy.

Hint: Cut up your meat into little pieces, because frozen cooked meat tends to become “less” tender. If it is cut up small enough, you can still get the flavor and protein and chew with one chomp. (Your kids will think you are a gourmet cook who can do anything in the kitchen.)

Add to the meat, extra water if needed, tomatoes (cause in the south we love our tomatoes in everything-see cheese dip) and anything else you can find (leftover mac & cheese). I had some corn on the cob, so in it went. Salt & pepper to taste.

Cook on simmer. Look and stir.

Now begin your corn bread mix. We love cornbread muffins cause they are fun. You can buy iron cornbread pans in all sorts of fun designs and the kids love it. I use “Bakers Joy” spray to make sure

the muffins come out of the pans in tact.

The butter melts on the bottom and the top goes into the soup. You want the soup to be hot and the cornbread to be fresh from the oven.

7. It is the Southern way to have condiments or sass as my mom called it.

This means a choice of pickles, olives, peppers, green onions, or what I call “Ref’d cucumber-onion pickle. (Cut up cucumbers, & onions put in jar with vinegar, water, sugar, salt & pepper. Has to be in refrigerator at least during the day for it to be considered sass.)

8. Serve with fresh Southern Tea & lemon plus I love to have stewed apples or apple sauce with my soup. Just seems fittin’. Enjoy!

We all want beautiful skin. When we see someone with a clear porcelain complexion our brains automatically associate them with heath and youth.

Unfortunately, perfect skin is not easy for most of us to achieve. A recent article I read estimated that Jennifer Aniston spends over $100,000 a year on her face and body each year. Don’t have an extra 100K in your pocket? No problem. There are some great medical procedures, as well as some basic things to do at home, that is cost effective and can have a huge impact on your skin.

There are 2 skin care products that are a must have for everyone. The first is a retinoid. Retinoids work by improving the way your skin sheds and renews itself, therefore increasing collagen production.

When used consistently, retinoids can decrease acne, even out skin tone, and soften lines and wrinkles. The various forms and strengths of retinoids make it easier for most people to find one that Page 108

works for them. If you’ve never used a retinol before, or have sensitive skin, I would suggest starting with an over the counter product. These ingredients will be listed as Retinol, retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate. Skin care lines are coming out with a variety of different formulations of types and strengths of retinoids. This is to help you get the most cell turn over and collagen stimulation with the least irritation.

The second must have product is sun block. This is really important. Everyone, regardless of your ethnicity, should wear a daily sun block of at least SPF 30. A sun block is a physical barrier, versus chemical, against the most harmful of UV radiation, UVA and UVB. An easy way to remember

is A – aging, B – burning. Look for products that have titanium and zinc as their active ingredients.

Got skin care products covered and looking to do more change to your skin? A great place to start is a fotofacial. The term fotofacial refers to an IPL, or Intense Pulse Light.

This is an older technology in the field of laser medicine, but still works like a charm. It is a series of full face (or neck, chest, arms…) procedure using a broadband of light wavelengths. Typically you do a treatment every 3-4 weeks, for a total of 2-5 treatments. The IPL is fantastic at improving age spots, pigmented lesions, broken blood vessels, rosacea, sun damage and acne. There is also some collagen stimulation, which improves fine lines and shallow acne scars. Downtime is minimal and this procedure is generally cost effective.

I am a big proponent of what you eat makes a difference in how you look and feel. If you don’t take care of yourself with good nutrition and exercise, you can’t expect your body in return to look and act its best. Not a lot of studies have been done to directly examine food and skin health. We do know that foods rich in antioxidants are not only good for your skin, but your entire well being. Foods that are highly processed, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats promote skin aging.

Dr. Lawrence E. Gibson, dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic, suggests the following skinfriendly foods: • • • • • • •

Carrots, apricots and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables Spinach and other green leafy vegetables Tomatoes Blueberries Beans, peas and lentils Salmon, mackerel and other fatty fish Nuts

This is a snap shot of some good and easy changes you can make. If you want to improve the look of your skin, I encourage you to start with one item, one change. This could be simply committing to adding more greens in your diet or it could be making that call to your dermatologist or local skin professional, for a consultation.

Inside the 'swiss cheese'. This was made with a white velvet recipe for a lovely moist cake. I used madagascan vanilla bean paste for extra flavour, then layered it with thick swiss milk chocolate ganache.

Top tier: a Cornish Yarg

cheese wrapped in nettles, in the shape of a heart.

Handmade sugar Calla Lilies, Lilac roses and veronica sprays to bring the wedding theme onto the cake.
