In the spring, Harvey students are asked to look ahead and select classes for the next academic year. With so many Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes available, many often have trouble choosing a balanced but challenging schedule. In most cases, underclassmen have never taken an AP course and are oblivious to the amount of work and dedication required for a college-level class. Harvey’s current curriculum offers 11 AP courses: English, American History, European History, Macroeconomics, Spanish, Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science. Although students are not required to take an AP class, there are many benefits to enrolling in a collegelevel course during high school. According to the AP Central website, students in Advanced Placement classes “learn essential time management and study skills needed for college and career success.” Even when students sign up for classes in a field they don’t intend to pursue, the skills that are taught in an AP class will help for the remainder of their academic life.

A GUIDE TO APs

This explains why it is easy to fall behind. CONT. ON P. 19

DEAR EDITOR, Earlier this fall, an art exhibition titled “Treasured Ornament: 10 Centuries of Islamic Art” was set to open at the Frick Pittsburgh on Nov. 4. However, this display never met the eyes of museum goers in November. Instead, executive director Elizabeth Barker postponed the exhibition’s premiere to late summer 2024. Barker told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that she worried the exhibition would be offensive to the city’s Jewish population and that “a forgiving person would call [the exhibit] insensitive, but for many people, especially in our community, [it] would be traumatic.” This very comment contradicts the exhibition’s purpose statement, which reads: “Treasured Ornament evokes the rich history of the Islamic world, and the shared human experiences that bind us, transcending borders and boundaries.” The decision to move the exhibition’s opening date only divides us more, instead of binding us together, by censoring other cultures. It is especially offensive to restrict religious or cultural art for fear of it being “traumatic.”

The Pittsburgh Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held a meeting with the administrators of the Frick Museum to discuss the situation. To learn more, The Pulse reached out to the executive director of CAIR, Christine Mohamed, to request a statement. To our delight, she quickly responded and earnestly stated that this ordeal actually “provides an opportunity for cultural exchange, understanding, and appreciation” because of the amount of attention it drew. On its website, the Frick Museum posted an apology written by Barker. She truthfully stated that her “words gave the offensive and utterly wrong impression that I equated Islam with terrorism and that I saw Jews and Muslims — communities with millennia of peaceful interconnection — as fundamentally opposed.” I do not believe this museum administrator should be lauded for her apology. Yes, it is kind that she made the effort to apologize, but that is what’s expected when so many are watching. And, although this lengthy statement steeped in regret is posted on the museum’s official webpage, the truth is that the exhibit remains postponed to August 2024.

This is a time when we need the exhibit more than ever. Cultural tensions are on the rise — due to a lack of understanding and sincere effort to bridge our divides. What we need now is the ability to listen and hear one another in a safe space. And what is a better way to connect with one another than through art? After all, art is the most primal way of expressing ourselves in response to the world around us. Claiming that the exhibit would be found traumatic by the Jewish community only continues to pit these two groups against each other and promote an absence of cultural appreciation and learning. In a social and political climate with so much misunderstanding, this exhibit could have been a bridge to liberation from prejudice — at least within the museum’s immediate Pittsburgh community. Why should it be expected that the Jewish community would have a “traumatic” response to a collection of Islamic art, especially when the art has absolutely no ties to Hamas, terrorism, or violence in any capacity? In fact, there is even no mention of Israel or Palestine, as many pieces were crafted centuries ago and find their origins in other corners of the Islamic world, such as Syria, Turkey, and India.

Additionally, Islamic and Jewish art have much in common. According to Halakha, or Jewish law, it is typically forbidden to create images of God and, in many traditions, human beings in general. Islam has a similar standard, which is what inspired the beautiful geometric and calligraphic designs, in place of human beings, which are now synonymous with Islamic art. This exhibit could have served as a forum for cultures to recognize their shared sacred traditions and for others to learn about the art of Islam in a building designed specifically for this kind of education – a museum. On the museum’s official website, the institution proudly boasts that “the core principles that guide our actions” are “curiosity, authenticity, empathy, [and] service.” Yet, by making this decision, The Frick has abandoned each and every one of its so-called core principles. Instead of promoting curiosity, Frick officials have chosen to censor. Rather than being authentic to their own values, they have contradicted themselves time and time again to do whatever they deem most favorable in the eyes of the public. And, all empathy is lost – the museum failed to understand the impact of their initial actions. Most importantly, the museum has done a disservice to its community by withholding the pure knowledge and enrichment that comes from viewing centuries worth of cultural art.

Sincerely, OLIVIA BARSKY

VIVA ESPAÑA

JOURNEYING THROUGH THE HEART AND SOUL OF SPAIN Last year, The Harvey School International Program brought many amazing students into our community. One of those students, Jaime Mendoza, came from Madrid, Spain as a 10th grader last year, and we became very close friends. Throughout the year, I knew him vaguely, but near the end of the year, he started staying at my house every weekend during the last three months of the school year. After that time, Jaime talked to my parents, recommending that I should go to Spain for a week or two to stay with his family, essentially returning the favor of our having him stay at my house. Finally, we decided on a date, and I left from June 18 to July 5, having a very long and entertaining trip. When I arrived in Spain, everything was different. Public transportation was like a completely different world. Instead of there being cars all over the streets, there are trains and buses everywhere for much cheaper prices than we have in America. The first day, to get to the Mendoza house, we took a train to the closest stop and then we walked a few minutes until we arrived at his home. There, his dog Apple approached me. Jaime lives with his sister, brother, and parents. The house has no air conditioning, just fans, which is typical for Europe. It was also the hottest summer Madrid had ever experienced.

PAGE 3

By Dylan Gueli Since it was the first day of my trip, jet lag was horrible. My day ended with me knocking out early to catch up for the long day of traveling. But after that, my schedule was back to normal, waking up at the same time and getting breakfast with Jaime at different places. The best experience that happened was when Jaime and I went to breakfast and ate churros con chocolate. It's a very common dish that is delicious, as the chocolate just melts into the churro. Also, a memory that I will never forget is eating Jamón in Spain every day. It's a special type of ham that they have in Spain, which is probably one of the best cured meats I have ever eaten. Usually, Jaime would cook a nice meal for me every day, but one time, we decided to go get dinner, just the two of us. This is where I was introduced to croquetes, which is probably one of my favorite dishes to this day. Most types of croquetes consist of cheese melting with a crispy outside. For example, ham is my favorite type.

After the beginning weeks of Madrid, Jaime's family and I took a trip to Menorca, a small island off Spain. The language spoken there is primarily Spanish with only some people speaking English. This is one of the most beautiful islands. The population is low, so it's more of a peaceful and quiet relaxing time with friends and family. After the quick hour flight, we ended up going to get pizza. The pizza was amazing but a little different from my usual pizza in New York. The other thing that was unique to me was they don’t cut the pizza for you, so you have to cut it with a knife yourself. On the island, we would hang out with his family and go on the boat that they owned, going to small islands off Menorca. Also, this was one of the first times that I was on a sailboat, so learning everything to do on it in Spanish was a little bit difficult at first.

Another student from Harvey, Iliana Hellinger, was in Spain at the same time as I was with another former international student named Gabriela Pastor. We ended up meeting them one day and going for tapas, which is a common way to eat in Spain. But before that meal, we ended up going to a museum in Spain.

After getting into the groove, it was probably the best experience in my whole life. I was rocking back and forth and gliding across the water. Then after that long boat ride we would jump off the top of the boat into the beautiful water, swimming and going deep underwater.

Also, a famous soccer team in Madrid called Real Madrid had their stadium about a five minute walk away from Jaime’s house. So, we ended up taking a tour of the stadium, and it was absolutely gorgeous. We saw all the trophies they have won over the years and could see the whole field without any fans in the way.

My favorite part was getting to do a cliff jump with Jaime because it was an adventure to get to this spot. We had to climb up to a point, and when we got there, we jumped soaring through the sky and then boom into the water.

Bullfighting is a tradition in Madrid. As we were walking around the main parts of the city, we went past the Las Ventas, which is the name of the famous bullfighting stadium that people frequently go to. It had an antique look to it, making it hard for me to stop looking at it.

Also, since we were on an island during my last days in Spain, we had dinner at a seafood restaurant. The fish was amazing, as it was so fresh and perfect, making me not want to stop eating. Finally, after all these adventures, the time had come for me to go home to America.

Walk Like an Egyptian By Olivia Barksy Larana, Inc

On Dec. 15, 2023, I embarked on a journey to Egypt with my mom, grandparents, uncle, and cousin. Though the flight felt as long as a lifetime, the trip was a whirlwind. When we landed in Cairo, we were immediately greeted by Hossam, a Caireen logistics coordinator from the tour agency, Kensington, who quickly whisked us through customs and passport control, helping us with our visas. The initial drive through Cairo from the airport was an overwhelming experience. Through jetlagged eyes, I saw illuminated minarets and signs and billboards embellished with lilting Arabic calligraphy. As well as swerving cars – Hossam pointed out that lanes in Cairo were more of a suggestion.

Looking back on my trip, I feel as if I am back in that car, watching memories and stills from Egypt zip past me like the cars and neon signs of Cairo. Now that I am able to look back on this surreal experience, I have been able to sift through all of my memories to discover the must-sees on a trip to Egypt. While I wasn’t able to visit the entire country, I had the amazing opportunity to travel down the Nile and see many of the monuments that line Egypt’s life source. The first must-see should come as no surprise: The Pyramids of Giza. Looking back, I realize kicking off my trip with The Pyramids may not have been the best decision, as they are such a showstopper. The only surviving wonder of the ancient world, The Pyramids were built in honor of the Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. These larger-than-life monuments were built around 2,550 BCE. The Great Pyramid can be marveled at from the inside, as well as its exterior. Getting to travel through the slim, dimly lit ramp ways of The Pyramid and into the burial chamber was an unforgettable experience – even though my knees ached for days after!

CONT. FROM P. 4 Though not as synonymous with Egypt as The Pyramids may be, The Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor was undoubtedly a standout moment of my trip. As the largest structure for religious purposes ever built, Karnak is a testament to human achievement. Construction of the temple complex spanned 2,000 years and one can see colossal statues, epic obelisks, and the famous “Avenue of Sphinxes,” a 1.7-mile-long road lined with sphinxes and rams that connects one temple to another. Perhaps what is most enchanting about Karnak is walking through the rows of impossibly large columns, still vibrant with the untouched multimillennia old color, allowing one to fully imagine the original glory of the religious center of the ancient Egyptian world. Also in Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens provide the opportunity to explore the ancient burial chambers of Egyptian royalty, as well as illustrate how much the Egyptians honored their dead. Each tomb was perfectly preserved – as if it had been new two years ago. Polychrome scenes of the Egyptian pantheon wrapped around the walls, in addition to hieroglyphic excerpts from The Book of the Dead. To ensure eternal life, royalty underwent the elaborate process of mummification and were equipped with the goods they would need to thrive in the afterlife. While we obviously cannot say for certain where these spirits dwell, their tombs are still being visited and their names are still being said after thousands of years. In that way, they really have cemented immortality for themselves.

PAGE 5

It’s not Egypt without mummies! Back in Cairo, The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization holds a significant collection of royal mummies. One can visit famous pharaohs such as Ramses II, Amenhotep I, and Thutmose I. Many of these mummies still had braided hair or manicured fingernails. However, my favorite mummy was Hatshepsut. I have been fascinated by Ancient Egypt since I was a child, and Hatshepsut, the longest reigning female pharaoh, has always been near the center of my interest. I’ll admit that getting to view her mummy and stand within inches of her made me tear up. After years of learning about her and then visiting monuments erected by her and her mortuary temple earlier in the trip, I felt like I was meeting her. Throughout Egypt, but especially in the hall of the mummies, οne cannot help but feel the presence of over 5,000 years of civilization all around them. The ancient wonders of Egypt never ceased to amaze me, but I also got to experience the very modern aspects of Egypt, as well. As an American tourist, I experienced quite a few culture shocks. When I was at Karnak, a few young girls asked to take a selfie with me. Once I agreed, they immediately called over about 30 of their friends – no exaggeration. These girls, from more rural areas of the Middle East, were thrilled with the opportunity to each get a picture with an American. I found it very surprising that they wanted a picture with me. This happened at other sites, too. Tour groups of younger children would walk by and some would start taking pictures of me or blowing me kisses! Another feature of modern Egyptian culture that I experienced was hospitality. Every time that I walked into a shop, the owner would immediately offer me any beverage of my choosing. Everywhere I traveled in Egypt, locals would ask where I was from or how I liked the country so far – each local was genuinely warm and welcoming in a way that, honestly, most Americans are not when meeting tourists. My tour guide in Cairo, Ramadan, even gifted us a book about Islam, explaining that part of Islam is to learn about and respect other religions.

Although Egypt may be known for its ancient, polytheistic religion, Islam permeates through modern day Egypt. Every morning, we could hear the beautiful call to prayer chanted by an Imam. And, since in Islam one is required to pray five times a day, every building we entered – mall, restaurant, or museum – had designated prayer rooms readily available. In the airports, security was separated by gender so that only female security guards can pat down female travelers, and the same with men. Before I left for Egypt, many of my friends and family raised safety concerns given the recent war in the Middle East. Yet, I felt completely safe the entirety of my trip. Everyone I encountered was so nice and wanted to be helpful and told my family that we should return to Egypt or tell our friends to come. Unfortunately, because of the conflict, many tourists did cancel their trips, so most sites were at even less than half capacity. This was nice for my family because we experienced amazing ancient marvels almost all to ourselves, but for the Egyptian tourism industry, it is absolutely devastating. Overall, this was the trip of a lifetime, and I urge anyone and everyone to go. Traveling through Egypt with my family was an unforgettable experience that I will always hold close to my heart.

The new year has arrived, and I hope everyone had a very fulfilling Winter Break. During this two-week long vacation, everyone must have had different holiday experiences. So, let me share highlights from my holiday. This Winter Break, I traveled to different cities in China. The first part I want to write about is my journey in Beijing. I met my former classmate Dora in Beijing, and we went to Xidan Joy City. Xidan Joy City is a very high-quality shopping center. First, we had Korean cuisine on the second floor, which consisted of fragrant fried chicken, sticky baked rice cake, and some salty and spicy noodles. In the flower shop on the first floor, I bought a handful of flowers and gave them to Dora. The staff tied a beautiful and fresh bouquet, with a few drops of dew hanging on the petals and branches of the flowers.

EXCITING

HAPPY HOLIDAY By Cindy Wang

I also made a few flowers with wires in the DIY area by hand. I gave them to my friend, and after strolling around the boutique for a while, I went to a very delicious tomato scrambled egg mixed rice dinner with my friends. We said goodbye and ended the day together. After resting for two days, I went to Shenzhen to meet a friend named HeYaoYao. Shenzhen is a very bustling city with unique urban characteristics and styles. When night falls, the lights are always on here, just like a city that never sleeps. We went to Wutong Mountain and then went down to see the night view in the nearby outdoor restaurant.

Next, Lily Zhou and I mixed incense. In the dazzling entertainment activities of Xidan Joy City, my friends and I immediately fell in love with our own fragrance mixing activity. I mixed sweet flower and fruit notes. The top note is mainly orange, the middle note is mainly lavender, and the end note is mainly violet. After mixing together, red bright powder is added, which smells fresh.

I'd like to introduce readers to Wutong Mountain, a special scenic spot in Shenzhen. The road signs on the mountain and the map navigation are consistent, indicating that this mountain has an elevation of 958 meters above sea level. It is a national scenic spot in China with an excellent green environment, and it is the main distribution area of natural evergreen broad-leaved forests. There are also many small animals among them. In addition to wild animals, there are also some introduced foreign species, but we only saw little squirrels. My friend and I spent three hours climbing the top and then more than an hour descending the mountain in Shenzhen.

My friend mixed a light smelling aquatic flavor. The flavors are seaweed with a slightly heavy top note, water lilies with a slightly elegant middle note, and sea salt with a slightly aftertaste in base note.

We had grilled meat and fruits. Here, I enjoyed the prosperity of Shenzhen. At 11 p.m., almost every household and store still had the lights on. Under the lights, Shenzhen was like it was during the day, making it a city suitable for night owls to live in.

At last, I met another friend, Simma. Their school was having a Christmas activity. She applied to the school for an off-campus visit and took me to visit here. She also performed a theme song about Elysia, the game character. After enjoying rap, gentle singles, anime songs, and the host's speech, we ate a little and left the school. We are two otaku, friends who like anime, and we met in a game. We have known each other for five years and have seen each other many times. So, after leaving school, we went to the game console experience hall for an afternoon to play "It Takes Two." It was really enjoyable at the YiYou·WeiJing console game experience hall in Beijing, and we had a very smooth time. After more than six hours, we played until the fifth chapter was almost over. Unfortunately, we did not pass the seventh chapter and could only continue playing again next time we met. This meeting ended with her parents calling her home. In the end, I returned to The Harvey School. Although the holiday has just ended, I am already looking forward to the next exciting holiday. Going out with friends during those days was the most enjoyable activity in the world.

JA MORANT’S COMEBACK STORY Professional basketball player Ja Morant was a former No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft, playing his college days at Murray State University. He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies and has been one of the best players on their team since being drafted. He was even awarded Rookie of the Year. During his few years in the NBA, he has been a top-caliber athlete, being his team’s best player and helping them advance to success. During his rookie season, Morant put up amazing stats, having 17.8 points, 7.3 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. Morant has progressed over the years, having his stats increase each season. Morant is also considered one of the top dunkers and athletes in the NBA at this moment. He has a high vertical and always tries to put the other team in the highlight tape when he goes up for a dunk. During the 2022-2023 season, the Memphis Grizzlies ended up getting the second seed in the west, which is near the top, making them one of the best teams in their conference. But they didn't end up winning the championship, as they fell short to Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. But this shows the impact Morant has made, because in just his third season, he is putting in top-caliber stats. He has been an All Star twice in just the few seasons he has been in the NBA. All this fame and being one of the most popular players in the league ended up going to his head, leading to him making some poor decisions.

By Dylan Gueli

A story later came out on Instagram for the opening of the 2023 season about Morant. Morant appears on Instagram live with fans watching him talk. According to the New York Post, Morant was caught with a gun on Instagram Live in a strip club, which led to him getting an eight-game suspension. Even after getting in trouble, he decided to do it again weeks later. He was in his car on Instagram Live once again, where he took out the gun again and started dancing with it in his hand. After the second incident, Adam Silver, the league commissioner, enforced a 25-game suspension, having Morant out for a quarter of the year. With Morant out for the first 27 games, the Memphis Grizzlies had a terrible start to the season. Their record was seven wins and 20 losses. This is one of the worst possible records, making them a below-average team. When Morant came back, the Grizzlies went on a hot streak with him leading them to a 6-1 record. In the nine games that he played this season, he averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.6 rebounds. These stats were top tier in the league when he was not injured. According to ESPN, he was even named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for his performance for the week he returned.

Sadly, through all the controversy Morant had this year, a game against the Phoenix Suns this year looked like it would be his last of the season. On Sunday, Jan. 6 against the Phoenix Suns, Morant suffered a terrible, season-ending injury. The doctors confirmed after an MRI that Morant indeed tore his labrum in his right shoulder. This is a painful injury that will make him have played only seven games this whole season. Ja Morant’s fifth year of his career will be ending because of this injury, making it very hard for the Grizzlies to succeed this year, because without him, they have been one of the worst teams in the NBA. After recovering for the rest of the year, Morant’s return will be highly anticipated next year.

THE RETURN OF JOE FLACCO Professional athlete Joe Flacco took the league by storm this season at an age most would consider too old to play. When Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with a season-ending injury, the team needed someone to step up in that spot. After this injury, the Cleveland Browns signed 38-year-old Joe Flacco to their practice squad. This was a chance to prove he still deserves to be on an NFL roster. Joe Flacco was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 after a stunning two-season career at Delaware, where he set 20 school records. According to NFL.com, Flacco immediately impacted the Ravens, “taking a team that went 5-11 in 2007 to the playoffs in 2008, where they finished with an 11-5 record.” Flacco won the NFL Rookie of the Year honor, showing how beneficial he was to this team. In 2012, Joe Flacco brought the Ravens to Super Bowl XLVII, defeating the San Francisco 49ers in a 34-31 final score. After 11 years with the Ravens, Flacco was traded to the Denver Broncos, where he only spent one year. After Flacco got to a certain age, he bounced around the league as a backup quarterback. From 2020-2022, Flacco was on two more different teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets.

By Brandon Levine With Flacco going from roster to roster over the years, it looked like it would be the back end of his career. Flacco had other thoughts and was ready to prove every analyst wrong. The narrative about Flacco at this point of his career was, that he could be a backup quarterback and nothing more. According to Bleacher Report, Joe Flacco said, “I still think I can start, I do believe I am still good enough to be a starting quarterback.” In the 2023-24 season, the Cleveland Browns signed Joe Flacco due to the injury of their quarterback, Deshaun Watson, who would be out for the remainder of the season. In his third week as a Clevland Brown, Flacco impressed with 374 passing yards and two touchdowns, leading the Browns to a 20-17 win over the Chicago Bears. This was Flacco's time to write off the people who didn't believe in him and his age. Another impressive week for Flacco was against the Houston Texans. He threw for 368 passing yards and three total touchdowns, leading the Cleveland Browns to a 36-22 victory. After this game, Flacco expressed what it meant to be back. According to ESPN, Joe Flacco said, “I feel like a 10-year-old kid again.” Flacco was expressing his gratitude for showing he still has gas left in the tank.

According to ESPN, Joe Flacco said, “If I messed up in high school, I could have been one of these guys' fathers.” Instead of letting his age mess with his mind, Flacco has fun and isn't worried about what the media says about him. As reported by Spectrum 1 News, one of his teammates, linebacker Anthony Walker Jr., said, “He's a great leader for us, a great veteran presence at that quarterback position. We’re happy to have him, a steady hand that we needed. He's doing a great job for us.” Former tight end Dennis Pitta told the website called The Athletic, “I’m not surprised that Joe is back playing and playing well … Watching him play, he looks like he’s 28 out there. It looks like the Joe I know. I don't want to speak for him, but he could probably play another handful of years. With that arm, why not?” Football fans should take this 38year-old quarterback seriously. Joe Flacco has reached levels no one thought would be possible at his age.

A LOOK INTO BOYS HARVEY VARSITY BASKETBALL After getting off to a hot start to this season, the boys varsity basketball team is looking to build momentum and live up to the expectations of this season. The Cavaliers won everything imaginable last year, taking the HVAL championship , as well as going all the way to Boston to secure the Class C NEPSAC title. The boys are looking to continue this winning culture and do it all again this year. Although they lost a few key players when last year’s seniors graduated, they still have their point guard, junior Jonah Kass, to rely on. Jonah is one of the two captains of this team, as well as the leading scorer, averaging 15 points per game. The Pulse asked Jonah about how he felt about this group of teammates, and he went on to say, “Playing with this group of guys is extremely special. I’m surrounded by talented players, and each day, we make each other better. We hold each other accountable to make sure that we work toward our goal of winning another championship,” showing great confidence in yet another successful season. The Pulse then went on to ask a couple of players how they feel so far. Senior Dylan Gueli was asked what his favorite highlight of the season is so far, and he stated, “Winning the tournament at Horace Mann was amazing because last year we had lost, so having a comeback this year felt great.” This is something other players have mentioned, as well.

By Luke McCarthy Junior Brandon Levine was asked the same question, yet his answer was somewhat different. He said, “The most exciting thing for me so far was probably making varsity. Although winning the tournament was amazing, I feel that making varsity has been the biggest highlight for me,” still touching on the fact that his team won the first tournament of the season but also the fact that he became a first-time varsity player. This is a huge accomplishment for young athletes. The team continues to grow as players and as people, as they’ve been supporting other Harvey basketball teams' games by showing up for girls varsity, both JV teams, and even the middle school team. They’re really pushing the narrative that Harvey basketball is more than just a team but also a family. Gueli also told The Pulse, “Overall, we're better as a team. There's more of a connection between teammates. It feels like everyone is getting opportunities, and he believes that as a team, they show a lot more promise that way. As somebody who has been to multiple varsity games so far this season, it’s safe to say that this team has a lot of confidence together, and they are really willing to do whatever it takes to win games and make it all the way back to the HVAL and even NEPSAC championship games.

I’ve been on the courts taking pictures for a project I’m doing, and a key moment I can remember from one of the games is a block by sophomore Cam Spruils. As I was standing in the corner of the gym, the other team had stolen the ball. Cam was chasing down the opposing player, who had a free lane to the basket, yet Cam flew from behind him and got a massive chase-down block. This play sparked huge momentum for the Cavaliers and made what was thought to be a close game a blowout. The Cavs would go on a run after that block, making their lead greater and greater as time went on. From seeing games last year and watching more games this year, you can tell that the team is really different from past years. Captain Olaf Gorski was asked how he felt about this team compared to the last. Olaf said, “One of the biggest differences is age. Our team is younger than last year, with many new people coming to varsity. Also, we only have five seniors playing this year. Despite that, I believe we are a balanced team, and last year, players were replaced by fresh talent.” Olaf, being one of the leaders of the team, portrays a bunch of confidence in his team and shows zero doubt in the young player's ability to score and help win games. The Cavaliers have had a strong start to the season, and they look to keep pushing throughout the year and defend both of their titles in HVAL and NEPSAC. Everything so far points to yet another confident team that isn't afraid of any challenge they come across, and from being friends with a lot of the players, they are determined to win.

C.J. STROUD: TAKING THE NFL BY STORM An up-and-incoming rookie from the Houston Texans took the league by storm and formed a respectable name. C.J. Stroud, a rookie quarterback selected with the second overall pick in the NFL’s 2023 draft, is a name all football fans should keep an eye on. C.J. Stroud has endured many hardships to get to where he is. His father, Coleridge Bernard Stroud III, is serving a 38-year prison sentence in upstate California. According to Sports Illustrated, Stroud’s father pleaded guilty to charges of carjacking, kidnapping, robbery, and misdemeanor sexual battery related to a drug incident that ended in him evading the police by jumping into San Diego Bay. This incident ruined the relationship with his 13-year-old son. Stroud’s family was left with no money following this incident. He spent his high school years living in a small apartment and was the youngest of four children. On the positive side, Stroud grew into a talented quarterback prospect. Stroud still didn’t have money off the field for new cleats or contact lenses. Sports Illustrated said things were not much better on the football field. C.J. entered his junior season, throwing about 50 pass attempts and only received one scholarship.

By Brandon Levine

C.J. ended up having a breakout senior year. He went from a three-star recruit to third in his class. With this emergence from Stroud, he ended up receiving many more scholarships. By the middle of his senior season, it became apparent that Stroud was one of the nation’s best quarterback prospects. According to the website On3, that fall, Stroud received offers from Ohio State, Georgia, and USC in addition to Oregon, which had offered in August. Stroud officially visited all these schools before signing with the Ohio State Buckeyes. C.J. Stroud’s stats at Ohio State were impressive. He threw for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns in only two years of play. These stats got the media noticing this young star on the rise for Ohio State. Anthony Treash, a college football analyst, said, “He has a big arm, his numbers are off the charts, and his overall physical profile is precisely what the NFL is looking for '' This is what people see in this young quarterback. When the Houston Texans selected Stroud, both sides were ecstatic about the opportunity, and Stroud knew he was built for this chance. After getting drafted, Stroud said, “I have the armor of God on me.” Stroud always thanks the man above for everything and knows he can't do this alone.

As reported by ESPN, Stroud has some historical weeks in the 15th week of his rookie year. In his ninth week as a quarterback, Stroud had a historical outing. He put up 470 passing yards, five touchdowns, and an outstanding 71% completion rate. He helped the Texans beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 39-37. All rookies have yet to be able to put anything near to these stats in their rookie year. Another impressive week was in only his second NFL game. The Houston Texans were matched against the Indianapolis Colts. Even though the Texans lost this matchup, Stroud had an excellent game. He threw for 384 passing yards and two touchdowns. After this game, the hype was getting real for this young quarterback. Stroud won Rookie of the Year, building upon a most outstanding rookie campaign. Stroud had a combined 3,631 yards, 26 total touchdowns, and only five interceptions. These stats show the excellence of this young quarterback. Every NFL fan should be taking note of this unique talent!

WEMBANYAMA VERSUS CHET HOLMGREN This NBA season, two of the most anticipated and talented rookies took the courts by storm. Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren are both 7-foot super athletes who have dominated all levels of basketball leading up to the NBA. Although Holmgren was drafted last year, he sustained an injury before he could even play, nullifying his first season and still making him a rookie. Wembanyama, from France, surfaced as the greatest NBA prospect since LeBron James. He's had everybody’s eyes on him going into the draft. Wembanyama was taken No. 1 overall in this year's draft by the San Antonio Spurs, who have not been a very good basketball team for quite some time. Wembanyama’s debut was something everybody was waiting for. He had a nice debut for a rookie’s firstever game, but based on expectations, it could be looked at as underwhelming in some aspects. He scored 15 points in 23 minutes and shot well from the field, shooting 66.7%, as reported by ESPN. Everybody watching expected him to be dominant on the boards. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Wembanyama only accumulated five rebounds that night.

By Luke McCarthy Chet Holmgren was taken No. 2 overall in the 2022 draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder haven’t been a great team in the past few seasons, but they’ve only been going up. Their progress is not something to overlook, as they have one of the best players in the league in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. They have a great young core, and adding Holmgren into it has only made them better and scarier. Although Holmgren had to sit out a whole year last year, he still qualifies as a rookie this year, making this NBA Rookie of the Year race one of the best in a while. Unfortunately for Holmgren, he didn’t start as strong as Wembanyama. Being that Wembanyama is the No. 1 option for his team offensively, it’s easier for him to score more points in games. Holmgren is not the No. 1 option like Wembanyama is. Gilgeous-Alexander is the main player on the Thunder, as he is considered a top 10 player throughout the league by most people. According to ESPN, Holmgren started off with an off game, only scoring 11 points and getting four rebounds in 25 minutes. Yet, the next game, he would respond greatly with a 16-point and 13rebound game. While also shooting extremely efficiently from beyond the arc, making 75% of his 3-point shots.

Over the course of his next games, Wembanyama improved certain aspects of his game. He was getting more rebounds, according to ESPN, averaging 8-10 boards a game. However, other parts of his game started to decline. He started shooting poorly from behind the arc.

Holmgren continues to sit around the 15-18 points per game mark while also averaging around eight rebounds a game. This isn’t the highlight of his season so far, though. Holmgren has had two 30+ point games so far into the season, not just against some team with a poor record, but in an overtime win against Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors and in a close loss to Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers. In the game against the Warriors, according to ESPN, in 37 minutes, Holmgren scored 36 points, had five assists, and recorded 10 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. This is an absurd stat line for a rookie. It’s not every day you see a young player, or any player for that matter, filling up the stat sheet like this. This would push his team to win in overtime 130123. For one of the most anticipated Rookie of the Year races, the start of the season has been nothing short of amazing. Both rookies have been playing extremely well and helping their teams win most of their games. Although their situations are quite different, we can only expect to see a hard-fought race all the way until the end of the season. Maybe a different rookie surfaces and takes the league by storm, but as of now, these two are the clear dominant favorites with extremely bright futures.

WILLIE NELSON: AN AMERICAN ICON TURNS 90 By Connor Harrington

The red headed stranger, Willie Nelson, turned 90 years old on April 29, 2023. The illustrious country singer celebrated his birthday on stage, performing alongside the equally laidback Snoop Dogg and other music icons, namely, Keith Richards, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young. On Dec. 17, 2023 the cultural event was televised on CBS. Nelson was born on April 29, 1933 in the small farming town of Abbott, Texas. According to Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Nelson and his older sister, Bobbie Nelson, were raised by their grandparents and were encouraged to take up music from a young age. By the age of 6, Nelson was taking mail order lessons for the guitar. He would also sing gospel songs in a Baptist Church with his sister. Nelson would write his first song at only 7 years old, and he began to play in a local band by the age of 9. By the age of 13, he started playing at dance halls with German and Czech polka bands to help earn money for his family. Nelson became popular locally, and some local girls even formed a Willie Nelson Fan Club, as reported by PBS. By the 1950s, Nelson was writing more polished songs such as “Night Life” and “Family Bible.”

PG AE G E1 31 PA

In 1960, “Family Bible” became a hit, prompting him to relocate to Nashville to become a staff writer at Pamper Music. There, he established himself as one of the most gifted songwriters in the Nashville music scene. He would continue to score hits such as “Crazy” and “Funny How Time Slips Away.” In 1962, Nelson released his debut album, “... And Then I Wrote” after signing to Liberty Records. The first 10 years of Nelson’s career he was forced to dress conservatively, have slicked back hair, and shave his face. Liberty records forced these changes on Nelson, since the real Nelson did not fit into the Nashville music scene of the 60s. As a result of the changes imposed on Nelson, his music felt insincere and inauthentic, leading to mediocre sales. On Nelson’s eighth album, “Good Times,” he was featured on the cover in a polo shirt and khakis on a golf green with a girl in a high skirt. Nelson left Nashville in 1972 to move to Austin, Texas, where the “hippie” scene prompted him to fully embrace himself in his style and his music. He would grow out his hair and beard, and he began wearing blue jeans and T-shirts, which became the “outlaw” look he is known for today. Willie even began to push the gender norms of the time by beginning to wear his hair in braids in 1978. Nelson recalled in his 2015 autobiography, “Felt good to get onstage wearing the same jeans I’d been wearing all damn day. As I look at it, I was turning exactly into the person I was.”

The American people found something they all could enjoy in the real Willie Nelson. His career took off after his metamorphosis, releasing some of his best work from 1973-1975, specifically, “Shotgun Willie,” “Phases and Stages,” and “Red Headed Stranger.” Nelson went on to become known as one of the best “Outlaw” country singers along with the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, who later formed the supergroup “The Highwaymen.” His new grandeur was not directly countercultural, but with this style, he united the greatest divide in American politics: The Republicans and the Democrats. In 2015, Nelson was awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. In the crowd applauding Nelson was Representative Kevin McCarthy and Representative Nancy Pelosi, two politicians in opposing political camps sharing the same praise for one individual, Willie Nelson. The Texas Tribune cited Nelson as, “The only person who can bring Democrats and Republicans together in the nation's capital.” One of the most infamous Willie Nelson stories occurred in 1979 at the White House. THE SECRETS OF THE IDAHO COLLEGE MURDERS: 1122 KING ROAD

In the notorious case of the Idaho College murders, four University of Idaho students (Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves) were fatally stabbed between 4 a.m. and 4:25 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022 in an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. A month later, on Dec. 30, Bryan Christopher Kohberger, age 28, was arrested as a suspect on four allegations of first-degree murder and one allegation of felony burglary. The question in the dark is that of the motive – some prosecutors say they connected Kohberger to the murder through his vehicle and cellphone records, as well as traces of DNA evidence found on the knife sheath at the crime scene (more on this later). However, Kohberger is without a known motive or criminal record.

The police are baffled about whether or not Kolberger was targeting a specific victim and then impulsively proceeded to kill the roommates, or if he truly had an intention to kill all four victims. According to The New York Post, many believe Kaylee Goncalves was the target of the quadruple murders because of her significant wounds.

By Annissa Khanna

When Kohberger made his first appearance in a Pennsylvania Courtroom, close to where he was arrested, his mother broke down into tears among his family in the front row of the courtroom, while Kohberger did not break eye contact. Yet, when he was brought to court in Idaho, he didn’t turn around, likely because he knew the victims’ families were behind him and he could not face what he’d done. The affidavit, which lays out the evidence against Kohberger, shows he was stalking the four victims, but no one quite understands why. Sara Azari, Los Angeles criminal defense attorney and NewsNation legal analyst, finds herself appalled by the state of the case. She told Court TV reporters, “It’s absolutely disgusting that Kohberger does not have a presumption of innocence, he has the assumption of guilt.” Azari says she is “not at all worried” about the DNA on the knife sheath, as according to her, the evidence is “insufficient to place him in that home, let alone to place the murder weapon in his hands.”

According to Court TV, the DNA found on the knife sheath under Madison Mogen’s body was the piece of the puzzle investigators needed. Detectives used DNA from the Kohberger family’s trash cans, which turned out to be a match.

Vinnie Politan, former prosecutor and a lead anchor for Court TV, stands on the opposite side of the case as Azari. He calls the DNA on the knife sheath “game over DNA,” describing it as “not just any DNA, but single-source DNA.” A single-source DNA profile is the most informative type of profile that can come out of a crime scene – it almost exactly matches the perpetrator’s DNA to the event of the crime, removing the doubt of the DNA being from another instance, such as a party from the past. Tiffany Roy, a forensic DNA expert with more than 17 years of expertise, says DNA can be found on items that have never been touched, in rooms where people have never set foot. Roy told Court TV, “He [Kohberger] may have never touched that sheath, and his DNA may have been transferred there by some contact with another item or person. We cannot tell how it got there, nor can we tell when it got there.” As a result, attorneys are saying if Kohberger states he was in the house before, the whole case will change, as his DNA will no longer be correlated with the event of the murder.

Azari continues to believe the evidence supporting Kohberger’s case is weak — though Kohberger’s phone records prove otherwise. His phone was not receiving signal around the time of the murders because he allegedly turned it off, yet it was picking up a signal directly before and after the murders. Azari said, “We don’t know it was off. It could have been in airplane mode or simply not have picked up a signal during that time.” Why Kohberger’s phone would’ve been on airplane mode exactly during the short window of the murders (while he was on land), is unknown. Additionally, there was a white Hyundai Alondra, identical to the one Kohberger drives, driving past 1122 King Road multiple times the night of the murders, but then suddenly, during the window of the murders, it disappeared. Azari claims it’s problematic to assume the car is the suspect vehicle due to the lack of knowledge we have about it, while many others believe that the lack of knowledge is precisely the reason the Hyundai Alondra is the suspect’s vehicle. Perhaps the most baffling element of the case is the eyewitness account of Dylan Mortonson, one of the two surviving roommates, reporting that she saw a man around the time of the murders dressed in black with a mask and bushy eyebrows, walking past her down the hallway. Mortonson shut herself in her room and did not call the police for eight hours — an alarmingly long time, which even Azari claims is “highly unusual,” sharing it will not make sense to the jurors.

1122 King Road was a college house, notoriously known as a party house. Oftentimes cops would show up at parties with a noise complaint, but none of the guests knew the homeowners. Jeremy Regan, the victims’ neighbor, told the media “there were a ton of people going in and out constantly.” Prosecutors and defense attorneys, therefore, wonder if the amount of people entering and exiting the house factors into the case against Kohberger. There were hundreds of individuals in this house in the nights before the murder, possibly including Kohberger. What is certain is the list of suspects extends far and wide, due the the number of people who has access to the house before Nov. 13 with the motive to kill, many of whom Xana, Madison, Kaylee, Bethany, and Dylan don’t know. Kohberger received his doctorate in criminology, and at the time of the murders, was a teaching assistant. A few of his students came forward, pointing out a difference in his behavior after the murders. Student Hayden Stinchfield said, “Around that time, he started giving everybody one hundred and seemed preoccupied.” Another student said he would come in for 10 minutes and leave without saying a word.

Steve Goncalves, Kaylee’s father, has been at the forefront of the investigation. Earlier in the case, he found Hunter Johnson, victim Ethin Chapin’s frat brother and close friend. Johnson gave his eyewitness account to Steve Goncalves, who then knocked on the doors of all the neighboring houses of 1122 King Road, where the murders took place. Megyn Kelly of “The Megyn Kelly Show,” who is leading the coverage of this case, said, “The biggest question to Steve Goncalves was why this nightmare enveloped his family’s life. Without this knowledge, nothing in his life after Nov. 13. would make sense.” Steve Goncalves thought jealousy, perhaps, may have been the driving factor. He told Court TV, “The girls were always happy. I think maybe he’d just seen that happiness and something inside him made him jealous of the fact that two people could love each other and be the best of friends, and that rubbed him wrong.” Though motive is not an element of crime, and is therefore not an element of murder, every inquiring mind, including that of the jury, wants to know why Kohberger would do this to innocent victims. The state could go to trial without motive but likely will not. Yet, the question remains of whether there even is a motive, or even a connection. The judge presiding over Kohberger’s case has banned news cameras at the trial, but the case will be live-streamed front and center in 2024 for the public.

However, for men, the movie was received very differently. Ryan Gosling’s Ken is nothing more than an accessory to Barbie, and he doesn’t have anything going on unless Barbie invites him to a party. As narrator Helen Mirren describes, “Barbie has a great day every day. Ken only has a great day when Barbie looks at him.” When the two enter the real world, Ken finally feels seen, noticed, and powerful, while Barbie is cat-called. The film portrays Ken as a bumbling bimbo, flipping the roles from what Barbie has always been seen as. As expected, men did not like this portrayal. Calling out the patriarchy, an already touchy subject, in such an outright way, as the Barbie movie does is obviously going to elicit criticism. But many men watched the movie and instead of seeing how it simply flipped the power dynamics, they saw it as an attack. A review on Rotten Tomatoes written by blogger Jim Schembi read, “For the first 30 minutes or so Barbie is a fun, featherweight satire …Then the stuff about the patriarchy kicks in and the film turns into a thinly disguised #metoo rant, trading comedy for man-bashing and a lot of confused point-scoring about sexism.”

PAGE 16

As a man, seeing yourself represented as the silly and incompetent sidekick that is Ken won’t feel great. But that doesn’t make the movie anti-man, as so many critics have claimed. Women have been portrayed as blonde bimbos throughout the history of film; just look at Marilyn Monroe’s entire career. Flipping the script is not an insult. The film is far from anti-man; it’s anti-patriarchy. Ken’s best friend, Alan, portrayed by Michael Cera, is charming, funny, and kind, because he’s not a Ken. He is the healthy version of masculinity. The “Barbie” movie is not a man-hating film. It’s a toxic masculinity-hating film. While the film hardly addresses all the ins and outs of feminism, it’s a good start, and has opened so many eyes to the reality of being a woman. Even some men, those willing to listen, were affected. As a man named Ibrahim shared to marieclaire.org, “As a young man, it made me think about the pressures women face to conform to societal standards of beauty and perfection.” If you’re mad at the “Barbie” movie, remember: all Gerwig did was hold up a mirror to reality. In the end, the negative reactions only prove the movie’s point. It’s either anti-man or not feminist enough, just as Gloria’s monologue tells us.

CONT. from P. 13

Willie Nelson's crossover success is the result of his country roots in Texas while simultaneously pushing for progressive ideals and voicing his love for America. Turk Pipkin, who wrote two books with Nelson, stated, “He united the hippies and rednecks.” Nelson still records albums to this day, even winning best country album of the year last February for his album “A Beautiful Time.” At 90 years old, Nelson has yet to kiss the stage farewell, going on tour in 2024 with 15 scheduled dates. Despite his old age, Nelson has no plans of retiring. When AARP asked Nelson if he has any plans of retiring, Nelson jokingly responded, “I retire after every tour. But I’m always ready to go back again.” Nelson has ventured outside of music throughout his career and is considered an activist in some regards. Farm Aid, Nelson’s most prominent cause, has been active for close to 40 years, beginning in 1985 as a benefit concert for farming families. Nelson is also a co-chair of NORML, an organization attempting to reform laws of a specific plant, which Nelson has been advocating for since the 70s. His progressive politics don’t end there, as LGBTQ Rights, R.A.I.C.E.S. (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services), and biofuel are focal points Nelson has openly supported throughout the years.

Nelson’s politics, beliefs, and personal life have regularly collided. He drives a pickup truck with a gun rack on the back, yet he owns a biodiesel processing plant. He owns a house in Hawaii, yet he owns and operates “Willie’s Place,” a truck stop in Texas. He teaches Sunday School, and he has praised the “hustler energy” in Las Vegas. As Willie Nelson put it in “It’s a Long Story: My Life,” his autobiography, “I’m a man of many parts.”

BEYOND BING: REMEMBERING MATTHEW PERRY On Oct. 28, 2023, 54-year-old actor Matthew Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home. He was best known for playing Chandler Bing on the hit show, “Friends,” which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004. It followed the lives of a group of six young friends living in New York City. Chandler was often considered the lovable comic relief of the show with sarcasm and one-liners. Perry was even awarded a Primetime Emmy for the role in 2002. While Perry will be widely remembered for his role as Chandler, there is so much more that made him the man he was. Perry was born Aug. 19, 1969 in Massachusetts, and according to The New York Times, “Following his parents’ divorce, he was raised by his mother in Ontario… His stepfather is Keith Morrison, the longtime anchor of NBC News’ ‘Dateline.’” When he was 15, he moved with his father to Los Angeles, where he found his true calling: acting. In his 2022 memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir,” he wrote, “Fame would change everything, and I yearned for it more than any other person on the face of the planet. I needed it.”

By Ellie Florin

“Friends” quickly became the most popular sitcom at the time, and it eventually became the most popular sitcom of all time. This was partly due to the fact that the six costars, Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt Le Blanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Perry, were all equally close in real life as they were on the show. Perry wrote in his memoir, “From [the] first morning we were inseparable. We ate every meal together.” However great the community was, Perry struggled with many personal battles both during the show and following.

On the same podcast, he said he would much rather be remembered for helping others rather than for playing Chandler Bing. “The best thing about me, bar none, is that if somebody comes up to me and says, ‘I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?’ I can say ‘yes’ and follow up and do it,” he said. “When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing that’s mentioned. I want that to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m gonna live the rest of my life proving that.”

Following his death, the Matthew Perry Foundation has been launched Perry recalled Aniston coming to his trailer to support people suffering from one day and telling him that it was clear he had addiction. In a statement on the been drinking too much. She told him, “We can foundation’s website, their mission is described as, “The realization of smell it.” Matthew’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the Perry wrote, “The plural ‘we’ hit me like a disease of addiction.” sledgehammer.” Perry was often candid about his struggles with drug addiction. He battled addiction at the height of his career on “Friends” and said during a “Q With Tom Power” podcast in 2022 that due to this being so obvious to him, he wasn’t able to watch the show. Later in life, Perry focused much of his energy on using his experience to help others with their sobriety.

When he was still a teenager, Perry made his film debut alongside River Phoenix. Following that film, he appeared on several sitcoms, but nothing made him the star he yearned to be until “Friends.” Matthew Perry in "Friends." Photo Courtesy of Everett Collection

In late October 2023, Perry, at age 54, was found “unconscious in a stand-alone jacuzzi,” a representative for the Los Angeles Fire Department told CNN. On Dec. 15, his cause of death was determined as “acute effects of Ketamine.” Perry affected so many people in his life, both those he knew directly and those who simply watched him on television. The core six of the “Friends” cast released a joint statement to ABC News which read: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.”

2023:

MUSIC GUIDE By Connor Harrington Disclaimer: This is NOT a “Best Albums of the Year” list. This is a guide to great music released last year. The Pulse tried its best to include something for everyone. 2023 was a year full of incredible music, particularly for hip-hop. The categories for each album are alternative, metal, hip-hop, R&B, and singer-songwriter in order to introduce more variety. Many albums were taken into consideration, but the LPs featured on this list were placed for three reasons: creativity, accessibility, and quality (as well as having a school appropriate title or cover). Alternative: “Ooh Rap I Ya” - George Clanton Lush, serial, dense. The fourth studio album by Virginia native George Clanton is a deeply layered and psychedelic experience. While the name suggests this is a rap album, Clanton does not rap at all throughout the record. The album begins soft for a few seconds before transporting you into another universe through the beautifully layered beats and Clanton’s voice. The layered beats do not take away from the experience of Clanton’s voice, although there are points where the two seem to fuse, which only adds to the atmospheric experience. This album is depressive yet glorious, resulting in a unique listen.

Metal: “PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation” - King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Pure Progressive Thrash. The Australian-based band King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard distributed a progressive thrash metal album after the release of their album “Changes,” a psychedelic pop album. Although the major change in style may cause many to question the quality of the album, the collective has become known for their rapidly changing concepts. The group has touched upon multiple genres of music. While it has not always been their best work, they almost always bring a fresh sound to a tried-and-true genre. This album is no different. While it is everything to expect from a thrash album, the sounds are still new. Through the obscure time signatures, occasional layered vocal parts, intricate riffs, and constantly changing tempos (speed), the album sounds unlike any of the thrash albums of the 80s and 90s. Yet, the LP simultaneously reminisces the sound of raw power of 80s and 90s thrash.

CONT. FROM PAGE 18 Hip-Hop: Voir Dire - Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist The first collaboration album between MC, Earl Sweatshirt, and producer The Alchemist, “Voir Dire” is a lethargic, raw, and drumless hiphop album. The beats on this album are stripped back and minimal, adding to Earl’s tired and somber voice. Earl Sweatshirt rapping is everything to be expected from the former “Odd Future” member. Sweatshirt tackles socially conscious topics throughout the record. While the rawness and fatigue in his voice could turn some off, this has become a defined part of his identity. MIKE and Vince Staples also lend their vocals for some stellar features on the tracks “Sentry,” “Mancala,” and “The Caliphate.” The album is consistent throughout and is possibly one of the Alchemist’s greatest collaborative efforts. R&B: Lahai - Sampha After releasing his debut album in 2017 and giving no release date for a follow-up, it seemed as if Sampha would never release another album. Yet on Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 album, “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” treated us to a Sampha feature on the track “Father Time.” This year Sampha, the UK artist, has finally given us his follow up, “Lahai.” Sampha’s voice is heavenly throughout the record as it is accompanied by beautiful piano, synthesizer, and drum parts, all of which were provided by Sampha.

Sampha’s voice is also layered with backing vocals which he, too, provided the vocals for, as well as some other backing vocals provided by other singers. The vocals between the background and Sampha’s lead vocals combine for some soothing back and forth parts on the album. Anyone interested in artists such as SZA, Mac Miller, or Frank Ocean could find a lot of enjoyment in this LP. We could be witnessing the rise of a future R&B legend. Singer-Songwriter: “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We” - Mitski Despite the rumors of Mitski possibly retiring from music, those rumors have been brought to an end with the release of her newest work. Although she’s often viewed as a “TikTok” artist – an artist who’s gained recognition through the social media app–Mitski does not allow her popular songs tether her creativity. In 2020 Mitski would move to Nashville, where she would later release her 2022 album “Laurel Hell,” a Synthpop/Art Pop record which was disappointing to many. Despite a majority of her creative endeavors lie in the world of pop, it seemed as if she was unsure of the sound she wanted to convey, likely due to a change in environment. This year's release sounds like she’s grown more accustomed to her environment. The finished result of the album is truly something worth hearing. The majority of the album is heavily influenced by indie folk and Americana. Mitski opens with an acoustic guitar track solely focused on the pain in her voice, which is complemented by additional vocal parts. Mitski remains acoustic throughout a majority of the album, and while this is a slight change of sound for the singer-songwriter, she accomplishes this seamlessly.

CONT. FROM PAGE 1 As a student in AP European History, I have experienced firsthand the challenges that come with AP courses. At the same time, enrolling in AP Euro has greatly expanded my knowledge of history, and it helps me to quickly turn out high-quality papers. Even after only taking one AP, I already understand why students need to devote a great deal of time to these classes. With all of the reading, writing, and tests that come with humanities-based APs, it is crucial for students to fully comprehend what they are getting themselves into. So when the current Harvey classes of ’25 and ’26 are faced with the daunting task of choosing their schedules next year, The Pulse urges students to keep in mind what selecting Advanced Placement courses truly entails. Taking multiple APs might seem like a good idea, but the sheer amount of work needed for these classes is second to no other course at Harvey. If a student takes an AP that they aren’t passionate about, they will probably regret it. Harvey is a school that allows students to challenge themselves as much or as little as they choose. However, making your schedule too rigorous can become a real danger, both to your academic and personal lives. While it is certainly possible for students to take more than one AP, every one of these courses comes with a sacrifice.

Following the success of Suzanne Collins' “The Hunger Games” trilogy, fans were overjoyed in 2012 to learn the series would be adapted to fit on the big screen. Many believed the series would come to a close in “Mockingjay,” the final installment of the series. However, fans continued to speculate whether Collins left the door open for additional stories to be told in the world of Panem.

“SNOW LANDS ON TOP”

IN THE “HUNGER GAMES” PREQUEL

Fan theories came true when Collins released “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” in 2020, a prequel that focused on Coriolanus Snow as he navigates young adulthood in the Capitol. Taking place during the 10th annual Hunger Games, the novel brought to life a Panem that audiences had never read about before. The Capitol still controlled hegemony over the districts, but it did not possess the level of technology depicted in the original series. On Nov. 17 of 2023, a movie version of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” directed by Francis Lawrence hit theaters. The film stars Tom Blyth of “Billy the Kid” (2022) and Rachel Zegler of “West Side Story” (2021) in the roles of Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird. After being reaped to compete in the brutal games, Snow serves as Lucy Gray’s mentor in the arena to ensure her survival.

By Logan Kreisberg Since the film is set 64 years before the original series, the film contains a completely new cast from the previous films. However, the protagonist of the movie, Coriolanus Snow, is certainly a character that audiences have seen before. Viewers remember Snow as the vicious president that ruled over a fascist regime. “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” shows a different side to Snow. Although it is still easy to pinpoint the cunning and paranoia that is crucial to Snow’s nature in this new film, the character has not fully become the dictator audiences have come to expect. Tom Blyth’s portrayal of Coriolanus perfectly exemplifies the characteristics of the determined Snow. In the movie, Blyth becomes a character that audiences are rooting for, even with the knowledge of the horrors the same character committed in the original series. Audiences will also recall the palpable chemistry between Blyth and his co-star, Rachel Zegler. While it is doubtful whether Snow and Lucy Gray’s relationship is truly authentic, the dynamic between Blyth and Zegler makes viewers believe they are in love. An important aspect of Lucy Gray Baird’s character is her musical abilities. Throughout the film, whenever Lucy Gray has trouble communicating how she feels, she turns to song. Zegler’s ethereal voice leaves viewers mesmerized by her presence, and every ballad she sings serves a purpose.

Even with the outstanding performances and world building the film accomplishes, the movie struggles with its pacing. With a runtime of two hours and 38 minutes, it is inevitable that some parts of the film feel uneventful and slow moving. While sequences in the area are thrilling and actionpacked, other parts of the film are almost boring and serve little purpose to the plot. Most movies follow a three-act format, and “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” distinctly follows this composition. It can be argued the film particularly struggled in the third act, as there was still so much development the characters needed to undergo. Cuts had to be made that were crucial in the original source material, which ultimately led to this act to feel rushed and incomplete. Despite these structural problems, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is a movie The Pulse highly recommends viewing. With its breathtaking shots of Panem and outstanding performances from each member of the cast, these elements will be enough to keep audiences engaged. Since there are such little references to the original series, audience members are not required to have seen or read any other “Hunger Games” installments. “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is currently on streaming services, so The Pulse hopes you check out this action-filled movie. May the odds be ever in your favor!

There are many pets in the world, but the cat is the most lovely, adorable, and friendly animal on the planet. I want everyone to understand the cuteness of cats and how to protect them if you want to have a kitten. First, I have a little cat named French Fries, who is my family and friend. Although she often causes mischief, everyone has imperfections, and this is just a small inconvenience. To keep a kitten, in addition to material preparation, it is also important to be mentally prepared for them to constantly disturb you. You also need to be prepared to take care of the cat for a lifetime. Be sure to treat your little pet with care.

CUTE CAT COMPANIONS By Cindy Wang

There are six common types of cat litter, and there are several things to pay attention to. One is to choose one with no or very little dust, the other is to check its water absorption, the consistency of cat litter particles after use, and finally, deodorization. Whether cat litter can effectively deodorize is very important, which affects the happiness of raising cats.

Secondly, it is important to prepare well, including what cats need and how to purchase toys and food that are suitable for them. You will need cat litter, cat food, a water bowl, a cat scratch board, a cat teaser toy, a brush, and nail clippers, as well as a carrying box for taking cats out and to the veterinarian. To choose high-quality cat food, you need to learn to look at the ingredient list, and the ingredient with the highest proportion in cat food comes first. Cats are carnivorous animals, and it is best to have meat or protein in the top few of the ingredient list. Secondly, the Chinese online official account Chonglai also said that too many additives may burden the cat's liver, so we should choose fresh and natural food for small cats, pay attention to the cat's diet, and protect cats.

Famous writer Italo Calvino said that cats can heal our loneliness and emotional trauma, and they are our best companions. While cats heal us, don't forget to play with them. Companionship should be twoways. Some people may buy special toys for cats, but in fact, there are many things that cats like around us, such as feathers or a beam of light from a flashlight.

Be sure to interact more with cats, because your world is big, but your cat's world is small. Famous Chinese pet doctor Lu Zijie proposed that the physical and mental health of pets are closely related, so don't forget to play with them. No matter how busy you are, make sure you spend more time with it in its small world. Living with a cat requires adjustment. My little cat French Fries was born to my aunt's big cat. French Fries left her mother at a young age and was easily scared when she first arrived, often hiding. At first, we didn't dare to go out either. We fed it cat treats and played with it every day. Gradually, it became comfortable at home, wandering around like she was patrolling territory every day. Of course, if a stranger comes, she will still hide. Be patient with your cat. It can't understand human language, so call its name more to help it remember. My little cat already knows its name is French Fries, and every time I call it French Fries, it will jump and run over. You also need to give it some reward treats regularly. The cat will be very happy, and sometimes you can give it some catnip as a reward, too. After reading this article, I believe you will have a basic understanding of how to raise cats. If you decide to have your own cat, you must treat it well. It will be a member of your family and a close friend in life.
