WELCOME FROM THE HEAD Dear Parents, Scholarships at Harrow Hong Kong are central to our School’s ethos, where all pupils are encouraged to strive to realise their potential. Harrow Hong Kong Scholars play a vital role in demonstrating, modelling and championing the values that are at the core of making Harrow Hong Kong a leading school in Asia. We have high expectations of our Scholars, and rightly so; they are highly capable and talented pupils who have spent time relentlessly in pursuit of their passions. We provide them with a tailor-made programme, consisting of mentoring, guidance and experience in their chosen field. We expect our Scholars to have a specialism in one or more areas, whether that be in Academics, Art, Chinese, Drama, Music, Sport, or STEAM. We also hope that they will have interests in other aspects of School life, other than their scholarship subject. We are looking for talented pupils from all over the world who will be guided by our six Leadership Attributes and strive to be the very best they can be and to be an example for our other pupils. We are in search of sportsmen and sportswomen who not only succeed on the pitch, but carry themselves with integrity and kindness off the pitch. We would like skilled artists, incredible musicians and confident actors who produce the highest quality of work and whose passions can be clearly demonstrated on a canvas or the stage. INTRODUCTION FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOLARSHIPS & ACADEMIC EXTENSION It is my great privilege to oversee the Harrow Hong Kong Scholarship Programme and work directly with our Scholars throughout the Upper School. At Harrow Hong Kong, our Scholarship Programme is built upon a foundation of our four core values: courage, fellowship, honour, and humility. These values serve as guiding principles for our Scholars and are deeply embedded in our educational philosophy. By cultivating courage, our Scholars are not only empowered to take risks, but also have a passion to explore new ideas for continuous improvement, and make a positive impact on the world around them. Through fellowship, our Scholars develop strong relationships, learn from diverse perspectives, and create a supportive network that extends beyond their time at Harrow Hong Kong. We instil a strong sense of integrity, honesty, and ethical behaviour in our Scholars and they are encouraged to make responsible choices that positively impact themselves and the wider community. Our Scholars are encouraged to approach their achievements with humility, to learn from different perspectives, to use their talents and abilities for the greater good, and be an inspiration to others through these personal traits. By embracing these values, our Scholars are equipped with the necessary tools to excel academically, grow personally, and become well-rounded individuals poised for future success. We believe that Scholars will be role models and ambassadors that inspire other pupils, and that Scholars enhance and enrich the education and development of the School community.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT HARROW HONG KONG What does a Scholar at Harrow Hong Kong look like? A Scholar at Harrow Hong Kong is likely to have natural ability and talent but, more importantly, he or she has a genuine love of learning and commitment to their subject. They regularly go ‘above and beyond’ in their work. You can see their passion and enthusiasm for learning and improving through the challenges they take on, the Super-Curriculum or Co-Curricular Activities they take part in, and the opportunities they seize for developing leadership. They might also have career aspirations in their specialism.

What Scholarships can I apply for? Candidates may apply for Scholarships in up to three areas, when applying for entry into Year 6, Year 9 and Year 12. The number and type of Scholarships awarded each year will be at the School’s discretion. Scholarship

It is recommended that internal candidates speak to their class teachers (Year 5) and subject teachers (Year 8 and 11) for advice on whether to apply for a Scholarship. Candidates are reminded that there are plenty of opportunities for all pupils in the School to show scholarship, even if they do not receive a formal award. Harrow Hong Kong is proud of the achievements and attitude to learning that our pupils demonstrate, and they are encouraged and supported in developing their leadership regardless of whether they have a formal title or not. With this in mind, the School may also award Honorary Scholarships to pupils to recognise and celebrate their achievements and contributions to the School at a later date in their School career. These do not involve a financial award, but pupils will take part in aspects of the Scholars Programme. Please note that we will only consider scholarship applications from candidates who are registered for entry to the School.

Bursaries A bursary is a means-tested award for parents who could not otherwise afford the fees, regardless of whether a pupil is a Scholar. The parents of such pupils will be means-tested annually to determine the level of bursary support required. ACADEMIC Whether you are a playwright to rival Shakespeare, a historian who can’t get enough of following stories through time, or a scientist constantly questioning how everything works, Harrow Hong Kong is an exciting and dynamic place to learn. You will have the opportunity to discover, explore and develop your passion, and be fully equipped for study at a higher level, both through the way our curriculum is taught and the Harrow Horizons Programme, which includes our super-curriculum which aims to stretch and challenge, co-curricular activities such as societies, competitions and ensembles, and an exciting range of trips. Our academic departments boast highly qualified staff with outstanding results at both IGCSE and A-level. In the last two years, over a third of our pupils went to a top 30 university*, including Oxford, Cambridge and LSE in the United Kingdom, and Yale, UC Berkeley, Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. Additionally we have alumni studying at Hong Kong University and Chinese University Hong Kong. The Humanities, including Economics, History, Geography, Politics, Psychology, and Philosophy and Religious Studies, are popular subjects which are highly relevant to the modern world, and often considered essential to many professions. Our Languages Departments of French, Chinese and Spanish build on pupils’ previous learning and develop their linguistic skills so they are able to communicate effectively, in ways that are meaningful and interesting. English is studied as a first language; we prepare our pupils to be able to access any university curriculum with ease, and for life after School. Our Sciences and Mathematics curricula enthuse and encourage pupils to develop a love of these fascinating and varied subjects, while also gaining the knowledge and skills essential for higher levels of study. ART Available from Year 9 Art at Harrow Hong Kong supports a pupil’s creativity, independence and progression, and at A-level in particular, encourages risk-taking, critical thinking and extensive research. Art is celebrated constantly throughout the School and during the academic year. We host numerous showings in our dedicated Art space; the Grant Gallery. Art provides a balanced course of study by complementing other academic subjects and providing the opportunity for pupils to develop in an environment of experimentation and creativity. We have successfully prepared a number of our Sixth Form artists to study a range of post-secondary courses and degrees in Fine Art, Illustration, Film and Media, Design, Architecture and others at institutions such as the University of Edinburgh, Bath, Central St Martins, and the Slade School of Fine Art.

CHINESE Available from Year 6, Year 9, Year 11 Harrow International School Hong Kong takes great pride in offering the prestigious Zhi Xing Scholarship, a distinguished recognition of excellence in Chinese Language and Culture. The Chinese department are committed to fostering the growth of exceptional linguists and confident communicators who possess a genuine passion for the acquisition of the Chinese language. As a student who lived abroad for five years, Chinese at Harrow really allowed me to connect with my culture. From reading the Four Great Classics (and even acting them out!) to Chinese speaking competitions, I was able to truly appreciate Chinese language. The teachers constantly encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, suggesting that I took part in the Chinese dancing during CNY assembly. DRAMA Available from Year 9 Lovers of the dramatic arts thrive at Harrow Hong Kong. Our teaching enables them to develop their skills and confidence in creating, performing and evaluating the elements of an effective performance. Throughout the curriculum pupils discover a range of techniques and encounter stimuli varying from Shakespeare to the lives of foreign domestic helpers. As well as theatre skills, the transferable skills of creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership are developed, using a variety of theatrical genres. There are ample opportunities for actors to thrive and showcase their talents throughout the academic year, in School performances and competitions. There are also many Co-Curricular opportunities providing pupils a chance to see and take part in performances and worldwide exhibitions such as participating in the International Schools Theatre Association festivals around Asia.

MUSIC Music is an integral part of life at Harrow Hong Kong. All Houses take part in the inter-House singing competitions and there are very few School events where you will not hear our musicians. Our curriculum develops pupils’ skills in performing, composing and appraising, incorporating knowledge of music theory and experience of different musical styles ranging from Caribbean to Western Classical music. All year groups are involved in performance projects, exploring the use of multiple instruments, and using the latest technology for composition. Our vibrant Co-Curricular Music programme runs throughout the year, providing a wide range of opportunities for pupils to engage with group music-making: orchestras, choirs and bands rehearse regularly and perform frequently both inside and outside the School. Individual Music tuition is available in a variety of studies from the trombone to the guitar, and lessons are delivered by a team of experienced and specialised visiting tutors.

SPORT Available from Year 9 The School’s ethos around Sport is one of ‘Sport for All’, coupled with a pursuit of excellence. There is a wealth of opportunities for pupils to enjoy Sport at Harrow Hong Kong, which allows them to flourish in their chosen strengths. This may be early morning training sessions, trying new sports in morning Games lessons, fixtures in the afternoons and coaching after School. Our primary sports are rugby, football, netball, swimming, basketball, tennis, badminton and athletics. The competitive Sports programme offers regular fixtures against other international and local schools through the ISSFHK and HKSSF league structures, and also in friendly fixtures. Harrow Hong Kong also hosts a number of tournaments throughout the year in various sports. The Co-Curricular programme also offers sports such as volleyball, golf, table tennis, horse riding and water polo, amongst other physical activities. There is also a myriad of inter-House competitions, as well as annual Sports Days in which every pupil is involved.

STEAM Available from Year 9 STEAM education at Harrow Hong Kong is designed to instil a profound understanding of the multidisciplinary approach required for creative problem-solving. It seamlessly integrates technical expertise with creativity and critical thinking, nurturing pupils’ ability to transform imaginative ideas into tangible realities. Since the inauguration of the Leonardo Da Vinci STEAM Centre in 2023, the popularity and impact of STEAM education have surged exponentially. Pupils throughout the School have opportunities to engage in STEAM SCAs, highlighting the widespread adoption of STEAM principles. The diverse range of activities offered under the STEAM umbrella facilitates the development of a wide array of skills. Moreover, the project-based nature of these activities creates numerous leadership opportunities, empowering pupils to take charge and make a difference. In summary, STEAM education at Harrow Hong Kong fosters multi-disciplinary problem-solving, blending technical excellence with creativity and critical thinking. “STEAM at Harrow has played a pivotal role in shaping both my academic journey and personal growth. My involvement in the Harrow Robotics Team since Y9 has been crucial in fostering my passion for multidisciplinary engineering. Beyond acquiring valuable hard skills in hardware and software development, leading the team and club post-pandemic allowed me to develop my leadership skills and practise solving problems and facing unexpected challenges collaboratively with creativity and resilience in a real-life workplace-like team environment beyond the classroom - skills that have transferred very well to other aspects of life both in-school and outside of school. APPLICATION & ASSESSMENT STEP 1 Prospective pupils should complete the standard application form and the Scholarship application form along with submitting the application fee by 1st November, of the year preceding entry.

STEP 2 School entry assessments will take place throughout November, December and January for the Upper School

STEP 3 Offers of School places will be made within four weeks of assessment

STEP 4 After reviewing the Scholarship application form and other affiliated documents of both prospective and current pupils, if we think there is potential to be an Academic or Outstanding Talent Scholar, we will invite applicants to participate in Scholarship assessments

STEP 5 Meanwhile, an acceptance of a place must be made within one week of receipt of an offer, along with the required deposit

STEP 6 Scholarship assessments will take place in January to March of the year preceding entry. Due to the international nature of Harrow Hong Kong, we understand that not every applicant may be able to attend the Scholarship assessment day, so other forms of assessment may be considered

STEP 7 Scholarship applicants will be informed of their results within one month of assessment 22


FAQs Who can apply? Scholarships are available to both internal and external candidates for entry into Year 6, Year 9 and Year 12. Please check the brochure carefully to see which Outstanding Talent Scholarships you can apply for, as not all of them start in Year 6. In exceptional circumstances, pupils may be considered for a Scholarship outside these entry points. We welcome Scholarship applications from all interested families, however, this may not result in an invitation to attend the assessment days. Please provide as much detail as you can in the application form about your child’s current performance to aid us in our selection process.

What does a Scholarship include? Scholars are recognised by awarding a fee remission of up to 20%, and providing a pathway for Scholars to follow. This provides additional support and opportunities for pupils to develop their passion for their subject or pursuit, challenge them to achieve their full potential, and also ensure their wellbeing.

Is there a Scholarship assessment fee? You only need to pay the application fee at the point of initial application to the School. The assessment itself is free and considered part of the application procedure.

Can my child apply for more than one Scholarship? It is possible to apply for an Art, Drama, Music or Sport Scholarship, or a combination of two of these along with an Academic Scholarship. Successful pupils may be awarded scholarship in more then one area. Any candidate applying for more than one Scholarship may need to return to the School on more than one occasion for the relevant assessment.

How much funding will I receive? Successful Scholarship candidates will receive up to 20% of their annual School fees (up to 15% for Music Scholars). The exact amount is at the discretion of the Head and the Head of Scholarships & Bursaries.

How long will the Awards last? Scholarships are reviewed annually and theoretically should last for the duration of your child’s time at the School: subject to consistent performance and provided conditions are met. The Scholarship awards continue across the transition through to Sixth Form.

Is the information in my application confidential? All information disclosed in the Scholarship application form is treated as confidential and is only shared with the relevant department(s).

Are Scholarships available to pupils considering boarding? Scholarships are available to both Day pupils and Boarders.

What do I need to supply with my Scholarship application? Please supply all references for your chosen scholarships along with your scholarship application form. Applicants for Art also need to supply a digital portfolio, for Drama: a video / online clip of a dramatic performance, and for music: two pieces of pre-recorded Music.

What happens if there is no space at the School for the year in which my child is applying? We will treat your application as normal, and expect you to have completed the application form for entry along with paying the application fee and filling in the Scholarship Application Form. Your child will be invited for Scholarship assessment if they fulfil the scholarship criteria and if we think there is potential for them to be a Scholar at Harrow Hong Kong. Should your child be successful in the Scholarship assessment, they will then be placed in the successful waiting pool for a place to become available. 23


Is there anything in particular you are looking for? Apart from clear evidence of exceptional ability in their chosen field(s), we are looking for passion and a desire to keep learning and excelling. We are also looking for pupils with strong leadership qualities; they will be mentors and role models for all pupils across the School and will need to show exemplary behaviour at all times. We will expect Scholars to promote their chosen fields and encourage pupils to learn and grow their skills within these subjects.

How do I apply for a Scholarship? For pupils applying to the School, the first step is to complete the application form and pay the application fee to be considered for any Scholarship at Harrow Hong Kong. The next stage, after reading this brochure and the entry criteria thoroughly, is to complete the Scholarship Application Form. Please make sure your child fills in the Personal Statement section as we would like to hear from them directly as to why they would like to be considered for a Scholarship.

Can my child bring their own accompanist to their music audition? All candidates are required to perform with the accompanist provided by the School. This is to allow assessments to be consistent for all candidates, as well as for logistical reasons. We believe that applicants will be able to show their ability and potential regardless of the accompanist.
