Welcome I could not be more thrilled to be chairing the Programming Committee again for the tenth Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival; now the biggest and best of its kind anywhere in the world. This is of course fantastic, but gives me a lot to live up to! I’m confident that this year we have put together a programme to make any crime fiction lover salivate like Hannibal Lecter at a plateful of braised banker. From those who like their crime cosy as crumpets, to those who prefer meat that is a little bloodier, there is a feast for everyone. So, tuck in… This is a festival for readers as much as writers. This summer promises to be a celebratory one for Britain with both the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, and the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival will be adding to the festivities by marking the tenth year the great and the good of international crime writing talent have flocked to the Yorkshire spa town of Harrogate for four actionpacked days in July. With bestselling crime writer Mark Billingham returning to helm the Programming Committee to create a sparkling and diverse Festival featuring the best and most brilliant writers from the UK and around the world, this year’s event promises to be one to remember. THANKS Back in 2003 the very first Harrogate Crime Writing Festival took place. The idea was to create a small weekend of literature events to enhance the programme of the well-established Harrogate International Festival. Then Val McDermid got involved. Through her knowledge, her contacts and her tenacity, Val put together a programme of events which featured some of the biggest names and brightest talents in international crime fiction; Colin Dexter, Reginald Hill, Jeffery Deaver, Alexander McCall Smith, Karin Fossum, Ian Rankin & Peter Robinson. She also had an eye for upcoming talent; programming then lesser known names destined to become hitters, such as Mark Billingham, Simon Kernick and Mo Hayder, and turned a spotlight onto Scandi-crime long before the zeitgeist put on a Sarah Lund jumper. After that kind of start there wasn’t much chance of staying small for long. Ten festivals on, the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is the largest and most prestigious crime fiction event in Europe and has been dubbed “the Hay-on-Wye of the crime world” (The Times). In 2012 we’ll welcome to Harrogate more than 80 of the best crime authors working today, fill the rooms of most of the town’s hotels for three nights and sell over 10,000 tickets. We wouldn’t have made it this far without the help, advice, generosity, goodwill and support of an abundance of authors, publishers, agents, sponsors and - of course – audiences, so we’d like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who, along the way, has helped the Festival become what it is today. There are a few people we’d particularly like to mention. Firstly, Jane Bradish-Ellames, who lit the blue touch paper and guided the Festival into being during its first years, and the publishing luminaries who have given so generously their time and expertise serving on the Programing Committee since 2003; Maria Rejt, Hilary Hale, Selina Walker and David Shelley. Special thanks must go to the incredible literary agent Jane Gregory, who has remained on the Programming Committee since the Festival’s inception and has been instrumental in the Festival’s success and continued development. Part of what makes the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival so special is the unique character and voice each Programming Chair brings to their year. We’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the very best writers – and nicest people – in the business, with Val McDermid setting the bar high for the Programming Chairs who followed her; Mark Billingham, NJ Cooper, Simon Kernick, Laura Wilson, Stuart MacBride and Dreda Say Mitchell. Each Chair has worked incredibly hard to produce original and inventive programmes, flavoured with their own personalities, and we thank them for allowing the Festival to embrace new areas and evolve year on year. Crime writers are a huge part of what makes the Festival special, but it is the crime readers themselves that are integral. Since 2003 our Reader-In-Residence has been championing the role of the reader and making sure fans of crime fiction have a voice at the Festival. The position was originally held for six years by Ann Cleeves and then, since 2010, by Martyn Waites. Both bestselling writers have worked tirelessly to engage libraries and readers across the North of England. Last but by no means least; the Festival simply wouldn’t exist without the support of our sponsors. He wouldn’t let them take him again... @PaulWilliams82 As the next station approached, Jed felt a tap on his shoulder, his heart leaped into his throat, and turned around to find… @sarah_hilary …a woman with an elderly face, an alibi of tweed and spectacles, her gaze like drawn steel… @danwaddell …in her outstretched hand was a small silver key engraved with a number. ‘Left luggage, Leeds station’, she whispered. @SidewaysPony He took the key, the train pulled into the station. He pushed past the ticket collector and ran for the platform. @meganeabbott Hurling down the platform, he held the woman’s face in his head. It had been so familiar, like a figure from an old dream.

@valmcdermid No time for a pasty, not if he wanted to visit left luggage and still catch his onward train. @davidbishop Jed saw two transport cops ahead. Slowing his pace, he passed by them. Don’t see the blood, he prayed. Don’t see the blood. @SJIHolliday They ignored him. He ran to the luggage desk. The clerk gave him an odd look when he handed over the key. ‘Wait here.’ @drjezphillips He did, breath shallow, heart racing. The clerk shuffled off, oblivious to the panic he was feeling. @andy_alcock The 3 minute wait seemed like an eternity as the sound of sirens grew louder. The mess he’d left behind had been discovered. @writermels The clerk came back and handed him a small case. ‘Do you have the key to this?’ he asked. ‘No, but I do.’ Jed turned to see…

@Simon_Crowley …a face he recognised. He had noticed him get on at the same stop. A cold fear swept through Jed’s body. In his state of panic… @badwolfbrian …he knew he had to run, but his legs had turned to lead. “It’s been a long time.” The voice was soft but cold as ice @StuartMacBride ‘You have something that belongs to us, Jed.’ The man opened his jacket. An automatic pistol nestled in his waistband. @isabellasharp ‘I don’t care about your gun,’ Jed blustered. But there was a quaver in his voice. @badwolfbrian “Pick up the case Jed, we don’t want anymore.... accidents like on the train.” Jed looked round. The clerk had wondered off. @erinfaye Jed paused, knowing the pistol would take extra seconds to draw because it was heavier than his switchblade, but… @NeilHarrison14 …his attention was drawn by words coming from the direction of a back room. ‘It’s him.’ @Crimesquadcom Jed turned and gripped the handle of the case. Then in a flash he swung round and smacked the man on the chin with it. @chrisewan The man reeled and tumbled backwards. The case was heavier than Jed had anticipated. Something rattled inside it. @TheSteadyTable Adrenaline spurted through his veins and drove his legs towards the exit. It was 20 meters away... 19... 18... 17... @ToddARitter He waited for the gunshot that was sure to follow. It came -- faster than expected -- the bullet hitting a man next to him. @Ms_Riot That was close, Jed thought, unless I was never meant to be the target of the bullet in the first place.

@Kittbeach Jed burst through the door. Sunlight blinded him and momentarily stunned he had time to think “Great Jed, now what?”

Hitting the road

This year, the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival turns ten, and to mark the occasion the Festival is taking to the road to bring an early taste of Festival fun to crime writing fans this May and June. Packing its overnight bag for a series of Festivals in miniature, the celebrations will see a range of handpicked local new talents and established crime authors visiting libraries across the North of England.

Britain’s Got Criminal Talent

Since its inception in 2003, the Festival has been committed to supporting the work and careers of new authors, with its annual ‘New Blood’ panel showcasing debut authors. With ‘Crime On Tour’ the Festival will be able further highlight the wealth of new and emerging authors out there, taking the Festival’s successful recipe of live literature events, which aim to be both thought-provoking and exciting, to fresh audiences.

(and Manchester, York, Newcastle, Hull…) Each ‘Crime on Tour’ event will be hosted by an established UK crime writer with roots in each region. The journey will commence in the city of Leeds with Steve Mosby, continuing to York and passing on the baton to Peter Robinson, then Manchester with…, to Newcastle with Ann Cleeves and then will end its ride in Hull with the Festival’s reader-in-residence Martyn Waites.

New Northern lights

Each host author will introduce two up-and-coming northern authors, ones to watch in 2012, with featuring names including David Mark, Danielle Ramsey, Alex Walters and one of the Festival’s Creative Thursday alumnae Mari Hannah. Writers will have the opportunity to discuss their work in front of a friendly and intimate audience, sharing their own success stories and giving crime writing aficionados the opportunity to ask questions and find out first-hand about each author’s travels on the road to success.
