Acclaimed for its top class performances Harrogate Interna�onal Fes�vals con�nues to develop its vibrant por�olio, which contains some of the country’s most pres�gious arts events, featuring the biggest names in the arts world and drama�cally increasing the cultural and tourism offer for Harrogate and the North of England.
Da�ng back to the 1840s, the Old Swan Hotel is one of Harrogate’s oldest and most cherished hotels. The hotel’s Victorian splendour and tradi�onal elegance is complemented by a modern and contemporary environment. The hotel has 175 car parking spaces and full disabled access. If travelling by train, the Old Swan Hotel is located a five minute walk or a short taxi drive from the railway sta�on. Coffee and Tea will be available to purchase during the interval of all Sunday Series concerts from the hotel. Please note the Old Swan Hotel accepts card payments only. The Hotel charges £3 for tea and coffee.

Welcome to the 2023 Harrogate International Sunday Series We’re proud to be a�rac�ng the brightest talents in chamber music to the heart of Harrogate, as our season of coffee concerts returns to the wonderful se�ng of the Old Swan Hotel. A�er a difficult few years, we look forward to welcoming you back to the Sunday Series with a programme of excep�onally talented musicians. As we return to some semblance of normality, it is vitally important that our audiences return, if the Fes�val is to con�nue its renowned work of bringing classical and chamber music to life in the North. As an arts charity, we depend on �cket sales to survive so please do invite your friends and family to join you throughout the Sunday Series. Since 1991, we’ve been bringing the best chamber musicians in the world to the Harrogate Interna�onal Sunday Series, and we’re incredibly grateful that we remain in a posi�on to do so. At the heart of the 2023 programme is the idea that innova�on goes hand in hand with tradi�on. We are proud to present this diverse and exci�ng series, designed to cap�vate both established and new audiences. We’re joined by previous Young Musicians, feature a brand-new ensemble project, and have two of the fastest rising stars in the business making their Harrogate debuts. Opening the 2023 Series is the current Director of Music at the Yehudi Menuhin School, interna�onally renowned pianist Ashley Wass, a Fes�val Young Musician alumnus from 2007. In February we welcome Trio Balthasar, comprising of the incredibly talented Iain Burnside, Tim Hugh, and previous Young Musician alumnus from 2014 Michael Foyle. Also in February the incredible Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, joins us fresh from her debut BBC Proms appearance. Bringing the series to a close is another one to watch; winner of the 2020 BBC Young Musician Strings category Coco Tomita, performing with pianist Simon Callaghan. The duo recently recorded Coco’s album Origins, which was described as “a head-turning debut” by The Strad.

Described as an “endlessly fascina�ng ar�st” Ashley Wass has a busy schedule as a pianist, both as a performer and recording ar�st, and is currently the Director of Music at the Yehudi Menuhin School. In 1997 Ashley won the London Interna�onal Piano Compe��on and made his debut recording in 1999 with an acclaimed solo recital disc of works by Franck. He was also a prizewinner at the Leeds Interna�onal Piano Compe��on in 2000. Ashley is incredibly in demand as a chamber musician. His programme at the Sunday Series includes works by Bach and Franck, two composers who have featured heavily in his impressive catalogue of recordings. Jeneba recently made her BBC Proms debut with the Chineke! Orchestra, performing the Florence Price Concerto and was heralded by the press as “demonstra�ng musical insight, technical acuity, and an engaging performing persona” (Music OMH). An avid recital performer, Jeneba was named one of Classic FM’s ‘Rising Stars’ and appeared on Julian Lloyd Webber’s radio series in 2021. She was a Keyboard Category Finalist in BBC Young Musician 2018, and currently holds the Victoria Robey Scholarship to the Royal College of Music. Hailed by cri�cs and audiences alike, Japanese violinist Coco Tomita first gained recogni�on a�er winning the BBC Young Musician 2020 Strings Category. She was named as ‘one to watch’ by Gramophone Magazine and ‘Young Classical Star’ by Classic FM. Described as “technically brilliant”, pianist Simon Callaghan performs interna�onally as a soloist and chamber musician, in parallel with his highly successful career as a recording ar�st.

Trio Balthasar is a new chamber group, commi�ed to imagina�ve, diverse programming. Since their launch at Wigmore Hall in 2022 they have appeared at the City Music Founda�on’s Wigmore Hall Gala, the Rye Fes�val, Petworth Fes�val and the Kirker Music Fes�val on Ischia. Individually each member of the Trio Balthasar has been praised for their vivacity, emo�onal depth and breathtaking playing. Comprised of Michael Foyle, 2016 winner of The Netherlands Violin Compe��on, principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, Tim Hugh, and acclaimed pianist Iain Burnside, the Trio present a programme where central masterpieces sit alongside diverse repertoire.
