Welcome to the 27th Harrogate International Sunday Series Our season of coffee concerts returns to the Old Swan Hotel with an international line-up of world-class chamber musicians. The series opens at the beginning of February with German-born Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger celebrating Beethoven’s 250th birthday year. Later in the month we welcome the winner of the 2016 BBC Young Musician competition, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Famed for performing at the Sussex Royal Wedding, Sheku is joined onstage by his sister, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. The Ashwell Trio share their passion for music spanning the Classical, Romantic and 21st Century eras and the Esmé Quartet, praised for their warm sound and powerful stage presence, also feature in the series. Bringing the series to a close is pianist and double winner of the International Classical Music Award, Joseph Moog. We look forward to welcoming you to the 2020 Harrogate International Sunday Series in the beautiful surroundings of the Old Swan Hotel.

Andreas Haefliger | piano Sunday 2 February | 11am Beethoven Beethoven Mussorgsky

Fantasia in G Minor, Op.77 Piano Sonata No.30 in E Major, Op.109 Pictures at an Exhibition

Coming from a rich tradition, pianist Andreas Haefliger “belongs to that elite group of interpreters…one of the most serious, questing pianists on the circuit today…a complete Beethovenian.” Born into a distinguished Swiss musical family in 1962, Haefliger studied at Juilliard and has since enjoyed performing regularly both in recital and with orchestras across the globe. Haefliger’s elegant programme celebrates Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a Fantasia and Sonata followed by Mussorgsky’s 10-movement musical work that was inspired by a visit to an art exhibition. Although originally composed in 1874 for solo piano, Pictures at an Exhibition became better known in orchestral form, particularly as arranged by French composer Maurice Ravel in 1922. “... one to take risks, which make him a fascinating artist” The Guardian

His debut recording, Inspiration, reached number one in the classical chart. One of seven musical siblings, Sheku is joined onstage by his sister, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. Whilst continuing her postgraduate studies as a Gwendolyn Reiche scholar at the Royal Academy of Music, Isata has embarked on a successful and increasingly busy concert career. “Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a player who makes you tune in to every nuance of articulation, every subtle shading, every eloquent turn of phrase” The Times
