Welcome to the 26th Harrogate International Sunday Series Experience the world’s brightest talents here in the heart of Yorkshire as our season of coffee concerts returns to the Old Swan Hotel with an exceptional programme of chamber musicians. Opening the series is the internationally renowned pianist Louis Schwizgebel, offering an engaging programme of Schubert and Chopin. Moving into February we welcome the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician Competition, trombonist Peter Moore, whilst later in the month the charismatic Ruisi Quartet take to the stage. The series also features violinist Jennifer Pike, who performs with one of the UK’s best loved pianists Martin Roscoe. Bringing the series to a close is pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed by The Telegraph as ‘one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century’. piano Sunday 13 January | 11am Born in Geneva in 1987, SwissChinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel has been described as an “insightful musician” by the New York Times. Second prize winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012, Schwizgebel was invited to become a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist in 2013. He made his BBC Proms debut in 2014 with an electrifying televised performance of Prokofiev’s First Concerto and continues to perform regularly both in recital and with orchestras across the globe. Schwizgebel’s elegant programme of Schubert and Chopin, featuring the favoured 24 Préludes – one in each major and minor key – is sure to be a crowd-pleasing opener to this series. Yamaha International Artist Peter Moore became the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition in 2008, at the tender age of 12. At the age of 18 he was appointed co-principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra and in 2015 joined the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist scheme. Nominated by the Barbican as ECHO Rising Star, Moore released his first CD to critical acclaim in 2018. Moore is joined on stage by fellow Young Classical Artists Trust musician James Baillieu, who was described by The Daily Telegraph as “in a class of his own”. Baillieu’s musical career spans an array of solo and chamber performances along with curation of projects and delivering masterclasses.
After winning both the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and Menuhin International Violin Competition in 2002, Jennifer Pike is one of today’s most exciting instrumentalists. Pike was a featured artist at the Proms in 2009 and became the only classical artist ever to win the South Bank Show/Times Breakthrough Award. With classical music and education close to her heart, Pike was recently invited to become an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust and Foundation for Children and the Arts, together with being patron of the Lord Mayor’s City Music Foundation. For this performance Pike collaborates with Festival favourite and one of the UK’s best loved pianists, Martin Roscoe.

Ruisi Quartet
Sunday 17 February | 11am Alessandro Ruisi, violin Oliver Cave, violin Luba Tunnicliffe, viola Max Ruisi, cello Winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society award for Young British String Players, the Ruisi Quartet has established a reputation as a charismatic and expressive ensemble, delivering performances that are “strikingly immediate, committed and direct” according to the Chichester Observer. Founded in 2012 by half-Sicilian brothers Alessandro and Max, the quartet perform regularly throughout the UK and Europe and have been selected as Kirckman Concert Society Artists for 2018/19, leading to their upcoming debut at Wigmore Hall. Yevgeny Sudbin | piano Sunday 7 April | 11am
Born in St Petersburg, Yevgeny Sudbin emigrated to Germany before moving to London to study at the Purcell School, followed by the Royal Academy of Music. The highly acclaimed pianist was nominated as Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2016 and is BIS Records’ only exclusive artist. Highly praised as a concert soloist, with The Telegraph describing his performance of Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 1 at the BBC Proms as ‘sublime’, Yevgeny has worked in recent seasons with orchestra across the globe from the Philharmonia to Montreal Symphony Orchestra to New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
