Digital Aesthetic3 2012 Art in a Digital World
6 October 2012 – 5 January 2013 Digital Aesthetic3 2012 brings the cream of the international digital art world to Preston to showcase the latest and best in digital art through exhibitions, events and a two-day conference. Artists have always experimented with, and pushed the boundaries of, the advances in the technologies and techniques of their day to create work that reflects their view of the world. The artists in Digital Aesthetic3 2012 embrace this philosophy, creating art with everyday technologies such as interactive games (that you can play), photographs and videos. However, appearances can be deceptive … look closer and discover details and meanings not seen at first glance. The exhibitions feature work by 20 significant and pioneering international artists, including Takahiko Iimura (Japan) and Sophie Calle (France), plus British artists such as Terry Flaxton and Pat Flynn. There are two new commissions: a web-based work, The Museum of Glitch Aesthetics by Mark Amerika (USA) produced in association with the AND Festival, and DIYVBIED, an HD film by Harrison and Wood (UK).

Using a photograph brought to the workshop (on USB stick/CD), participants will use it as a basis for creating a screenprint and relief print.

Also showing Dressing Up for the Guild Until 23 February 2013 Find out how the people of Preston have dressed up to celebrate Preston Guild over the last 200 years in this unique exhibition based on highlights from the Harris’ historic costume collection. Listen to music and diary extracts, the sounds that set the scene of a busy Guild celebration, whilst you discover the stories of the historic costumes and the people who wore them. Look out for Guild memories from proud Prestonians.

Moments that Matter Lubaina Himid Until 3 November Thousands of people in the North West have been involved in projects connected with the London 2012 Olympics. The impact of this participation has been very significant and the memories will last for years for many people. This archive project by international artist, Lubaina Himid visualises 50 of their stories in a series called Moments that Matter. Each of the 50 Trophy Cups painted on paper is individually made using the unique words and descriptions shared by participants with the artist. Look out for the Moments that Matter banners in the windows of city centre shops and online at nwfor2012.com/momentsthatmatter. Co-commissioned by Cultural Olympiad and Nations and Regions Group, North West. Supported by WE PLAY Expo, Preston Guild 2012 and UCLAN.

We’re inviting Preston-based artists to show painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and more. This is your chance to share your artistic skills with the whole city.

Stitches in Time 8 March – Summer 2013 Explore the art of quilting and how it has been used for practical, decorative and campaigning purposes. This exhibition brings together quilts made by the Well Women’s Centre as part of Preston Guild 1992, the magnificent Harris wall hanging by Josephine Ratcliff and examples of quilting and patchwork from the Harris and other collections.
This year we are especially looking for responses to the 2012 Preston Guild. As always we encourage children to enter the section for under 16s. You can pick up an entry form at the Museum or from the Harris website from 5 November. Handing in days for work are 11 and 12 January 2013. Many items are for sale and make unique presents. Curated by staff from UCLan, Impressit celebrates the wide variety of printmaking happening today. As well as featuring internationallyrespected printmakers and local artists, the exhibition explores the process of printmaking demonstrating a wide variety of innovative ways of creating prints. Gallery Oldham is set to feature items from the Harris collection as part of an exhibition exploring the relationship between ceramics history and contemporary makers. Chinese Sung pottery and early English slipware of the 1700s from the Harris will sit alongside pieces from makers such as Bernard Leach, Takeshi Yasuda, Alison Britton and Claire Curneen. Tradition is also the first showing of our new joint acquisition, Ocean, by Natasha Daintry. This exhibition celebrates of the collaboration between Gallery Oldham and the Harris Museum since 2008 on the Heritage Lottery Funded project, Collecting Cultures.

Events for families There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained at the weekend and during the school holidays! Choose from regular drop in sessions such as Hands On at the Harris and Wonderful Wednesdays to longer sessions where kids can become Time Explorers (history-based fun) or Arty Explorers (intro to art styles and artists). For younger visitors, check out Little Hands On just for the under-fives and their carers.

Blue Badge parking is available in Jacson Street. There is a ramp at the museum entrance.
We offer locally-produced sandwiches, crisps, cakes, biscuits and even ice cream from Lancashire.
We welcome guide and assistance dogs and an induction loop is fitted throughout the galleries. We have a ground floor accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities.
Our shop stocks a range of cards and gifts for adults and children, including unique artistmade items. Look out for our range of Guild and history goodies.
Audio guides are available in the Fine Art Gallery on the second floor, or from any member of staff.
