Physical Therapy Technician Externship Participate in an individually-scheduled, forty-hour externship supervised by a physical therapist or a physical therapy assistant at a local facility. You’ll get hands on experience working side by side with other members of the physical therapy team. This is an opportunity to apply the knowledge you gained in the course “Become a Physical Therapy Aide” and increase your value in a competitive job market. Topics include infection control, body mechanics, patient observation, and exercise principles for stretching, strengthening, aerobics, and range of motion. You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or a GED to enroll. A current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR card; evidence of adequate immunization for rubella, chicken pox, and mumps; negative TB skin test or negative chest x-ray reading are required before admission. Physical requirements include the ability to observe the client’s activity both close up and at a distance of up to 30 feet away, sit/stand in an upright position for approximately 6 hours a day, safely maneuver self or move another individual’s body parts, move objects in excess of 100 pounds, and lift and/ or carry a minimum of 50 pounds without restriction. Prerequisites: HIPAA, Healthcare Job Market Preparation, Healthcare Provider CPR, and Become a Physical Therapy Aide. Instructor approval required prior to registration. Veterinary Assistant Training The Institute for Veterinary Assistant Training If you have an interest in the health and well-being of animals, this course is for you! Veterinary Assistant Training begins during the Fall Semester and ends in the Spring Semester. Students must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Physical requirements include the ability to lift, push, and pull a minimum of 40 pounds unassisted. Additionally, you must complete the Reading & Math Assessment tests to demonstrate proficiency in reading at the 9th grade level and math at the 8th grade level. Contact the Test Center at 443-412-2352 to make an appointment. The program consists of seven non-credit courses, including a supervised clinical practicum, totaling 139 hours of training. The core curriculum includes the following courses: • Veterinary Assistant Training I: Outpatient Care • Veterinary Assistant Training II: Diagnostics & Pharmacy • Veterinary Assistant Training III: Patient Care & Treatment • Veterinary Assistant Training IV: Surgery, Anesthesia, & Emergency Care Prerequisites: • Animal First Aid & CPR • Massage Therapy for Animals • Introduction to Veterinary Assistant Training The Veterinary Assistant Training Program starts in the fall semester with the Introduction to Veterinary Assistant Training and continues through spring.
Animal First Aid & CPR Animal first aid is the immediate care given to an injured or suddenly ill pet until competent veterinary care is available. This course provides pet owners and other interested parties with information on caring for dogs and cats as well as guidance about how to determine when pets need professional treatment. Topics include initial assessment, restraint application, basic emergency care, CPR, common illnesses and injuries, and medication administration. Massage Therapy for Animals Learn the rudimentary skills of massage therapy for animals. When used in combination with a veterinary preventative healthcare program, animal massage provides complementary physical, mental, and emotional benefits. It also facilitates the socialization of abused and/or traumatized pets. This course provides information to the public so that participants may practice massage on their own animals. Those who wish to practice animal massage for compensation must be employed and under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. Required for all Veterinary Assistant students. Participants may bring a socialized dog to class for use in the practice of massage. All dogs must be licensed, have current rabies immunization, and be kept on a lead at all times.
