Choose the Smithsonian museum that intrigues you the most! Spend the day or an hour—it’s up to you as you select among the 15 museums located along the National Mall in Washington, DC. Pick-up and drop-off in DC in front of the Air and Space Museum. Most museums are open between 10 AM and 5:30 PM.

Travel to the 19th annual Library of Congress National Book Festival at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Winterthur and Costuming the Crown Newark, DE Friday, September 20 | 8:30 AM–6 PM Course: 45762

Visit the home and gardens of Winterthur to experience how the du Pont’s lived in America. Cap the day viewing the costumes of The Crown, an original exhibition of exquisite designs from the series. 40 historically inspired costumes from the show will be displayed and supplemented by photographs and vignettes inspired by the fictional program and by real life at Winterthur. After the guided tour, enjoy lunch and an exploration of the magnificent gardens. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Much of the terrain is hilly, although ample resting sites are available.

Catch the ferry in New Jersey and travel to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Pedestal access for the Statue of Liberty is included. Ellis Island, the gateway for those seeking the American way, houses magnificent artifacts belonging to those who reached the shores of America. You will have a 90-minute guided tour of the hospital on Ellis Island. The Hard Hat tour of the hospital is not ADA-compliant so good mobility is a must. Lunch is available on your own. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes as this trip involves moderate walking.

Visit six beautiful churches of Baltimore that rival European cathedrals without the hassle of downtown driving and parking. The churches represent five denominations and most include a docent-led tour. Learn about Baltimore history and enjoy beautiful architecture, Tiffany windows, statuary, and stenciling. Then enjoy a three-course lunch in the main dining room with its fun murals at Sotto Sopra, an Italian eatery that always makes Baltimore magazine’s list of 50 best restaurants. Choices include soup, salad, or polenta for first course; pasta, risotto, chicken, or salmon for main course; and tiramisu, gelato or sorbet for dessert; plus a glass of wine with your meal if you like. Hidden in Plain View: Harford County’s Historically Black Schools Harford County, MD Tuesdays, October 1-29 | 6-8:30 PM Course: 45972
Cost: $79
Newly emancipated communities across the nation, including Maryland’s Harford County, donated time, labor, and fund-raising efforts to establish schools. This course provides access to historic one- and two- room schoolhouses built in 1867. Visit Reconstruction, post-Reconstruction, and Jim Crow era schools that remained in operation beyond the 1954 Supreme Court decision to integrate public schools. Learn about individuals and organizations responsible for establishing and sustaining education for African Americans from 1865-1965 in Harford County. The first session meets on campus and other sessions will meet at locations in Harford County. Includes admission.

Rachel Carson Conservation Park is a 650-acre park dedicated to environmental preservation and contains more than six miles of natural surface trails for hiking. This park honors writer, environmental activist, and county resident Rachel Carson. Colleen Webster will lead the nature hike. Dress for the weather and bring plenty of water.

The Library is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office. Start with a Christmas tour of the Physick Family house that includes the Old-Fashioned Christmas exhibit at the Carroll Gallery, followed by lunch at the Lobster House. While finishing your meal, enjoy a Victorian Christmas traditions lecture. You may be surprised what you learn! But your day is not over! Next, visit three of Cape May’s Victorian inns decorated for the holidays. Each visit includes a tour by the innkeeper. Then it’s on to the Washington Street Mall for a bit of shopping. Your final treat for the evening is a trolley tour to see this historical town lit up for the holidays. Grab a snack for the ride home—no stops will be made. Enjoy an evening of family-friendly fun and fireworks choreographed to holiday music. Before the fireworks begin (about 8 PM), take a stroll through the estate while being serenaded by local choirs and visit with re-enactors from the First Virginia Regiment. You may also meet with George and Martha Washington or watch colonial artisans demonstrate the 18th century process of creating chocolate. Timed-entry for a guided tour of the mansion is included. Before your visit, enjoy an early dinner at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Restaurant.

More than 20 bed and breakfast inns, guesthouses, hotels, and churches open their doors and share their charm, holiday cheer, and Victorian interiors during the annual Candlelight House Tour. Free shuttle service on heated trolleys and two refreshment stations with fresh-baked cookies, wassail, tea and coffee await you as you embark on this self-guided tour of Cape May’s finest. You will have plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and see the town before the candlelight tour begins at 5:30 PM. Bus leaves Cape May at 9 PM for the return trip to Harford.

Harford Community College has requested tickets for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra performance at the Wells Fargo Center and will be notified as soon as tour dates are announced. The band’s musical style incorporates classical, orchestral, symphonic, and progressive elements into hard rock and heavy metal. Lunch will be included at a local restaurant prior to the performance. There are certain dangers, hazards and risks in off-campus activities. Harford Community College does not assume responsibility for any injuries, death, or damage resulting from these dangers, hazards, or risks. The College is not responsible or liable for any injury, damage, loss, accident, delay, or other irregularity that may be caused by any supplier of any goods or services used by or during off-campus activities.
II. HEALTH AND SAFETY
Harford Community College does not provide health insurance. Participants are responsible for providing their own health insurance. Participants are required to carefully follow instructions and safety procedures provided by the activity supervisor and the College. Participants are also required to abide by the rules and regulations of the off-campus site and College to include the Student Code of Conduct. Those failing to act in accordance with the rules and regulations of the College may not be permitted to continue to participate in the activity.

Harford Community College assumes no responsibility of liability for any injuries to person or property caused by the acts or omissions of others during transportation. Further, Harford Community College makes no recommendations or guarantees as to any transportation providers you may deal with in making your arrangements.

Harford Community College makes no representations or recommendations regarding the activities. If you are traveling with a partner or a group, indicate this on the liability form so you can be seated together. Trips leave from Entrance 6, Parking Lot W, unless otherwise indicated. Please note: Entrance 6 is NOT near Entrance 5. Deadlines for refunds depend on when final payments are made by the College. Requests for refunds must be received seven days prior to departures. However, once final payment has been made for meal/tickets, refunds are not available unless a substitute can be found.
