Want a fun game to play during passing periods? Here are Ryan’s “What If?” questions for this month. Ponder the question and then fill in your own answers or tell a friend.

•What if Americans didn’t celebrate Christmas? • What if everyone had 4-wheel drive? • What if IF merged with Skyline? • What if we couldn’t have a winter girls’ choice?

THE STARS Your December horoscope

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You feel burned out and tired, like winter has brought you nothing but laziness. Join an aerobics class or a Tiger sports team.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Throughout this school year, you have been giving it your all, whether it comes to academics or sports. You have been doing your best and it shows! Keep up the good work.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). With the snow falling and the freezing temperatures, watch your driving and beware of the school parking lot. It can get dangerous.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You feel like your friends are acting a little bit different lately and you don’t know why. Don’t stress over them this month. Make sure to keep yourself happy! GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Idaho Falls hasn’t been interesting to you this year. You feel somewhat bored and unchallenged. Look into some AP classes or maybe even college courses. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Your significant other has been acting very different lately. Things aren’t the same. It’s time to end things. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Christmas shopping has been a huge stress this month. Begging your parents for cash is getting old so it’s time to find yourself a good high school job.

•What if we went to school on the weekends? • What if everyone dressed like elves over the holidays.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It seems that this month you’ve been slightly more motivated, but you haven’t reached the finish line yet. End this tri and the school year with those A+ grades.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Happy birthday! This is your month and things are going great! Keep doing well in school, it’s going to pay off. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Take your significant other to a home game. It’s basketball season and what is better to do than watch your school dominate? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The new year is coming up, and you know that it’s time to clean out that locker. Make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to keep that thing organized. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Your budget is pretty tight this month. Cut back on some of your spending by eating lunch at the IF cafeteria. It’s cheap and yummy! Horoscopes created by Ryan Putnam

School and district offers IFHS support, help Counselors will be available after winter break, provide number to ‘talk’ Tiger Times staff According to the Idaho Falls Police Department, on Friday, Dec. 19, Keith Matthias, a math teacher at Idaho Falls High School, allegedly shot a man at the Walmart parking lot on Utah Ave., fled the scene and then shot himself. Students and faculty at the high school arrived Monday morning in shock. Administrators were ready to help. “We’re not going to focus on the individual act,” Principal Randy Hurley said. “Our main emphasis is that students and staff have the support they need so that they feel secure.” The school’s three counselors were on

hand along with a crisis team sent from the district to assist students and staff. “We are listening and giving support,” Danette Gneiting, a counselor at IFHS and high school representative on the district’s crisis team, said. “We provide a safe environment for students to go through whatever they are going through. We are also available to talk privately, if needed. We offer this for students and staff.” “When situations like this happen, there are people in the district trained to help,” Gneiting said. “We will continue to train for these things, too. We have plans in place to deal with everything from something minor in the school all the way to a major crisis.”

According to Hurley, counselors will be available until Wednesday, Dec. 23, and possibly after the winter break. However, according to Gneiting, the school’s in-house counselors will always be available. Former math teacher Tom Kohler will assume Matthias’s classes until Christmas break and possibly beyond that. “We’re in the process of looking for a full-year replacement,” Hurley said. “It’s too early to know exactly who will take over. But we are actively looking at a number of possibilities.” Counselors also said there is a helpline available for those needing to talk. EIRMC’s emotional hotline is 227-2260.

District bond fails to pass, improvements put on hold Nick Hamilton Managing Editor Schools in District 91 are in desperate need of facility improvements and some other minor upgrades. In hopes of providing money to pay for these improvements, school administrators proposed an $84.5 million bond. The money, officials say, already exists but of course there will be a trade off meaning that the money will have to be replaced from some other source whether it is property taxes or

some other form of taxes. Many teachers and students are hoping for this bill to pass. “This bond will help increase student education,” Vice Principal Haley Jones said. “I hope the bond will be passed this time. However, if the bond fails for a second time there will be repercussions further down the road. According to the Jones, enrollment has been increasing in elementary schools. “In order for IF High to be able to support the increasing number of kids, we’re going to need the benefits

from the bond,” she said. However, some students think the district is asking for too much money and not giving enough details. “They are going to jack taxes up again,” Blake Backman, senior and first-time voter, said. Backman voted against the bond. “People already pay enough and they don’t need to add to their costs.” “If students are struggling because of the size of the classrooms, they should take the extra effort to get help from the teacher on their own time,”

Osama Bin Laden FBI # 1 most wanted

Dillon Hammond, sophomore, said. “The bonds money could be used for a lot better things than enlarging the school.” The money would go to rebuilding the oldest elementary schools, build a new school on Idaho Falls’ south end to accommodate growth and several other projects. Some improvements planned at IF are to add eight classrooms and update some locker rooms, restrooms and concession stands at Ravsten Stadium. This year, class sizes have increased and the demand for

more materials have risen. The teacher-to-student ratio is unbalanced, as well. “I think the bond should be passed,” Paul Jackson, sophomore, said. “But, I think the money should be used for increasing the quality of our textbooks and computers. We should spend the money on more learning material, compared to more classrooms, which would only result in having to pay more teachers to fill those classrooms.” There is no new set date for the new bond proposal.

f you have paid any attention at all to our school or our city, you would know District 91’s $87.5 million school bond did not pass. The bill needed a super majority vote or 66 percent voter passer rating. As a kid still living in my parent’s house, I’m glad that it didn’t pass otherwise my parents’ property taxes would increase which would mean less money for my parents which would result in grumpy parents and less food around the house which would result in a grumpy me. But yet the school’s taxes would still remain lower. That doesn’t make sense to me. The school doesn’t’ pay for it, but the parents do? I was under the impression that the public school system was free. But yet even that is a lie. We still have to pay for materials that are required in class and we need to pay for bus rides for club activities or trips and we need to pay for lab fees. If the public

education is free then why are we paying for so much? The school district was planning to make huge improvements and some renovations to almost all the elementary schools in District 91 and some new additions to IF and updates to our cross-town rivals Skyline. The bond would have allowed the IF to build extra buildings on the south end of

bill proposed. And with the growth of the community, the schools are getting more and more cramped by the year so building new schools would help. Expecting to pass an $84.5 million bond is not the way to go about it. The school should instead of charging the parents of the students that attend their school, hold fund raisers and go to the national government for grants since our state government seems to feel that our schools and firefighters and police departments don’t need the money. Or the school could do what the Salmon district is doing. We could find a contractor who could come up with a simpler plan that costs much less, compared to the price that was proposed. It seems to be working for Salmon; the contractor now seems to be gaining some support after their bond was rejected for the past three years. Revise the bond details. Or we, as students, will be in trouble.

In the 80’s the war raged between Atari and Commodore 64. In the 90’s Nintendo battled Sega. However the battle for the 21st century is X-box 360 vs. Playstation 3. There has been much controversy over which game system is better, Xbox 360 or PS3. They both have many great qualities. We went around our school asking students which game system they prefer. “X-box because it’s not a playstation,” said Austin Weller, junior. Some people think that X-Box and Playstation are similar, but they are actually quite different. When you compare the PS3’s graphics with the X-box 360, the PS3 wins no problem. But when it comes to online game play the X-box comes first. The X-Box has been the leading gaming station in online play since Microsoft came out with it. It may not be a BluRay player, but the X-Box in my opinion it’s the best.

Draw your stick back to shoulder height and take a shot. A good slap shot is mostly technique and the power of your shot comes from a weight transfer. Girls Choice returns to IF Cole Bowyer Editor-In-Chief

Kolby Airheart Staff Reporter

iPod vs. Zune

Girls choice this year is now back on track. At the beginning of the school year, the administration informed the student government that there would be only one girl’s choice dance this year. Personally, the girl’s choice dances are some of the most fun dances that the school puts on. It gives the girls the chance to be more creative by coming up with the crazy, funny, and intense sayings that are thought up for the back of the T-shirts. When asked why there would not be a dance this year, the administration said that it wasn’t happening and that was it. But after the success of this year’s Homecoming dance, why not have a girls choice before the winter break? This was found out at a Student Council meeting where senior Ricky Romrell presented a bill to bring back a girls choice dance. The bill was passed with a unanimous vote by the student council and the class senators. Even our adviser

This year’s administration was attempting to only allow one girls choice dance this year. But, with the work of senior Ricky Romrell, we can all dance through the cold night. So we asked if you have ever been rejected when asking someone to the dance? And if you were happy that there is now another girls choice? And if it was hard to get everything together in such a short time?

“Having another girls choice is awesome because they are cheaper and way more fun then the formal dances. And it wasn’t that hard to get everything together because I usually wait till the last minute anyway. Rejected? Ha, never.”

The students dance the night away at this years Homecoming dance at the new Snake River Landing.

Honore Storms signed off on it. When it was given to the administration, we were told that it would all depend on the Turkey Trot - November’s annual dance - and how that dance went. Come to find out, the dance went on without a hitch and we can all yell for joy now that we can go to the winter girls choice dance. That’s if we don’t freeze before we get the dance. Now, I don’t really see why the school wouldn’t let us go with the tradition of having two girl’s choice

Who doesn’t have some sort of an mp3 player now days? Everyone seems to be using iPods and Zune’s instead of CD’s. But the real question is which is better an iPod or Zune. dances. They have always been great turnouts - even at last year’s 10-minute sit in, and that was because someone decided that dancing was against the rules, and they turned on the lights. And we can all agree it brings in the bank for whichever club puts the dance on; which this year the Scholastic Team has generously volunteered to put on. I would have to say though that if the school tries to pull another “let’s turn on the lights again” I doubt that the next girl’s choice will be a success.

- Erin Brown, Senior

“Well, um, it’s not that big of a deal to me that we have another girls choice. And this year I was nice and didn’t ask anyone, so my little sister could go this time. And that would be a no to being rejected.”

- Karen Bates, Senior “I really like that we have it because it was lame that they took it away. And I think it was harder to get stuff together because there wasn’t a big selection of boys. And I have never been rejected.”

“iPod because it’s not a Zune.” IPod comes with a variety of products; these include the iPod shuffle, nano, classic, and iPod touch. I really like the iPod touch. It is unlike any other mp3 player. You can download apps and get on the internet. “I like iPods because they have great availability of songs,” said Alexx Jensen.
