elcome to November, the month of sparklers, toffee apples – and conkers! Has anyone else noticed the lack of the shiny, brown ‘fruit’, encased in a spikey green husk this autumn? Apparently this year’s crop has been disappointing due to unfavourable weather back in the spring. Yet, when taking the dogs for a walk around our village, the hedges are full of rosehips and crab apples! What does mean? Does it herald a harsh winter ahead? We’ll have to wait and see. Here at the Handy Mag office, we’ve been working hard to fit lots of events into our November edition. Now the clocks have gone back, life should be slowing down – not so! It’s a busy month, with Bonfire Night, Remembrance Sunday and the steady build-up to Christmas. Our events for November and into December start on page 46 and include the Christmas Tree Festival at Huntington Methodist Church on 27th to 30

November. If you appreciate the natural world, then RSPB York Group is holding a fascinating talk at 7.30pm at Temple Hall, York St John University on 18th November about ‘Ecuador – Birding Heaven.’ Of course, November is the month when ‘we shall remember them’ at various Remembrance services in the York region. Turn to page 20 for our listings. And of course it’s the time of year for sparklers, rockets and Catherine wheels, so check out our listings section for a Bonfire event near you. Don’t forget we have our social media presence with Facebook and Twitter, so ‘Like’ us or ‘Follow’ us and keep up to date with what’s happening in the in the Ryedale area and in the Handy Mag office! We hope you enjoy this month’s edition and don’t forget our December edition deadlines on 3rd November. Congratulations to Mrs Couzens of York for winning our last competition. Your prize is on the way! Until next month …

Locking Up is something that everybody should do although a large number of burglaries are committed through an unlocked door.

LIGHT UP - LOCK UP By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

A

s Summer comes to an end and the nights draw in it is important to consider your home security. Many steps that you can take are obvious but put simply if you remember to “Light Up – Lock Up”, then you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Your local Police teams are actively marking property across York, events are advertised on Twitter and this is a great opportunity to have your valuables permanently marked using the Dot Peen equipment. This is again a great deterrent and should you ever be the victim of a theft makes the chances of your property being returned to you much greater. You can also follow the online form on the North Yorkshire Police website to request an Officer attend to mark your property or alternatively contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team who will be happy to arrange this for you.

A home in darkness is potentially a target for an opportunistic thief. If you are going out during the evening leave a light on in the property to give the impression that somebody is home as a deterrent. To leave a light on inside your home for a few hours whilst you are out will cost you only a few pence and is far preferable to returning home to find that you have been the victim of a crime. Timer switches are inexpensive and easy to use and are readily available in DIY Stores and online. Locking Up is something that everybody should do although a large number of burglaries are committed through an unlocked door. An opportunistic thief will try your door and if it is unlocked could enter your property and steal items that we often leave in the hallway or very close to the front door. This only takes a couple of seconds and is easily prevented. We all need to try and make sure that we do not leave items on display that will be a temptation for a thief. An expensive phone or laptop charging next to a window is a temptation and again simply by removing this item from view you massively reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

REMEMBERING

IN YORK

When the guns fell silent at 11am on the 11th November 1918, it signalled the end of the Great War, 1914 to 1918. Six hours before, the Armistice had been signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France. This meant there would be peace in Europe following some of the bloodiest battles in history. In 1919, King George V sent out a proclamation requesting a two minute silence be observed at war memorials and at other public places at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and on the second Sunday in November. Following the end of the Second World War, Armistice Day became known as Remembrance Day: a day which we would remember the fallen of the two World Wars and other conflicts.

Sunday 1 November 7pm at York Barbican. Since its inception in 1991 the York 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The moving words penned by poet Robert Laurence Binyon expresses the emotion of this sombre occasion:

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.”

Festival of Remembrance has raised over £125,000 for the Poppy Appeal which supports the work of The Royal British Legion, who, since 1921, have supported all those who have served in whichever service and whatever time. For more information or to book tickets, visit www.yorkbarbican. co.uk or telephone the booking line on 0844 854 2757. Sunday 8 November Ex Service contingent are invited to form up in Stonegate, York ready to march off at 10.30am. The Service will be conducted at the Cenotaph in the Memorial Gardens. Wednesday 11 November Royal British Legion, York Branch will be marking the 2 minutes silence at the Railway War

Castle Howard at Christmas

IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

Tickets now on sale for the last ever NSPCC Christmas Fair at Castle Howard

T

ickets are now on sale for the fifteenth and final NSPCC Christmas Fair at Castle Howard. The NSPCC Christmas Fair committee looks forward to welcoming shoppers this year for their last ever chance to experience this exciting event at its long-running home of Castle Howard on 5th, 6th and 7th November 2015. The Fair will move to Duncombe Park near Helmsley for 2016. Following the enormous success of 2014 when the NSPCC raised £55,000 from a new extended three-day format, the Fair will again benefit from an extra day’s

opening to attract the Saturday shoppers. This year, the NSPCC Christmas Fair will open as usual with a VIP preview evening on Thursday 5th November from 5pm to 9pm. Numbers are strictly limited for this ‘party and shopping’ experience so advance booking is essential with tickets selling out fast. The Fair will then continue during the day of Friday 6th and Saturday 7th November from 9.30am to 4pm. Tickets for the preview evening are £15 to include canapés and a glass of wine and the chance to spend an evening socialising and shopping in an impressive stately home setting. Day tickets cost just £8, can be bought on the door or on-line at www. nspcccastlehowardchristmasfair. co.uk and include entry to the gardens and playground with children under 13 free of charge.

have so far nearly raised for the NSPCC since we moved from The Orangery at Settrington to Castle Howard 15 years ago,” says Harriette Murray Wells, joint chairman of the NSPCC Castle Howard Christmas Fair Committee. “We shall be very sad to say goodbye to Castle Howard and the Howard family who have tirelessly supported us over the last 15 years but we’re already hugely excited about our new home for next year’s Fair. “We urge shoppers to get ahead with their Christmas gift search, lose yourself in the Christmas spirit and browse our carefully handpicked selection of 70 stalls. Half of our stalls are new to the Fair so there’s plenty of reason for shoppers to come back year after year for inspired ideas, in a relaxed and stunning location of a beautiful stately home.” The 70 stalls are carefully selected over the course of the year and this year the Fair will benefit from even more stalls as the food and drink section is significantly increased with the addition of a specially erected, heated marquee adjoining the Grecian Room. Around 40% of this year’s stalls are local independent retailers, and include new categories such as Christmas decorations and more kitchenware. In addition, gifts on offer include toys, books, jewellery, gardening, fashion, homeware, and gentlemens’ accessories. Income from ticket sales, sponsors and donations, raffle tickets and 10% of each stall holders’ takings go direct to the charity. Money raised at the NSPCC Christmas Fair goes towards the NSPCC’s vital services for children, young people and families in the region.

“We are firmly focused on making our 2015 NSPCC Christmas Fair a resounding success and leap closer towards our half a million pound milestone which we 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TAX ON PROPERTY INCOME PART 2

T

he Chancellors budget in July announced some major changes for property investors. This time I am focusing on some specific types of income tax relief available now, and those affected by the recent announcements.

Mortgage Interest As it stands, landlords are able to claim mortgage interest paid as an expense to reduce their profits from property income. The amount of tax saved will be at the individuals tax rate – e.g. if you are a basic rate tax payer, you will save tax at 20%. However, from April 2017 the rules are changing. Landlords will no longer be able to claim mortgage interest against their property income to reduce their profits. Instead, tax will be paid on the profits ignoring mortgage interest. A tax credit will then be given equal to basic rate tax (20%) on the mortgage interest incurred. This will mean some landlords who only currently pay tax at 20%, will now be pushed into the 40% tax bracket, as their taxable income is increased by the amount of mortgage interest paid, and the credit against their tax bill will only be equal to 20% of the mortgage interest. The changes are expected to be introduced over a four year period.

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

Wear and Tear Allowances on Furnished Properties The Wear and Tear Allowance is designed to cover items that a landlord typically provides in furnished accommodation, e.g. furniture, appliances, carpets, knives and forks! It reduces your taxable profits by 10% of your net rents (rents received less any expenses your pay as landlord, but would normally be paid by the tenant). If you claim the Wear and Tear Allowance, you can’t however claim the cost of renewing the individual items as well. Conversely, you don’t actually need to have spent anything to claim the 10% relief. The items which the allowance covers can be quite specific so it’s always best to double check before claiming. It has however been announced in the budget that from 6 April 2016, this will be scrapped. The cost of replacement

Jointly owned properties When a property is owned jointly, the income should normally be split based upon the individuals’ beneficial interests – usually determined by how much they put in. With husband and wives, or civil partnerships, unless otherwise stated, the rents are split 50/50. Any changes in ownership should be properly documented at the time, seeking legal advice where necessary.

For more information on property related taxes, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information. WILL YOU LEAVE YOUR KIDS A MASSIVE TAX BILL WHEN YOU DIE?

£4BILLION PAID OUT UNNECESSARILY EVERY YEAR More than £4 billion is collected by the Tax Man every year in Inheritance Tax (IHT).

There’s been some form of death duty in the UK for thousands of years. The general idea is that this kind of tax attempts to redistribute wealth stopping the rich from getting richer and the poor from getting poorer. The theory is that some of the money goes to the state and gets distributed for the benefit of all. THE MECHANICS Everyone gets an allowance they don’t pay IHT on. The current allowance is £325,000. This means if your house, car, cash, savings and investments – everything you own on death – are worth less than £325,000 when you die, there’ll be no tax to pay. Anything above that limit is taxed at 40%. This means that if you are worth, say, £600,000 when you die, your heirs will get a tax bill

of £110,000.

From 2021, an additional £175,000 allowance is available for those passing on family homes to direct descendants.

FREE CLAIM YOUR COPY NOW

TAX COMES FIRST The tax generally has to be paid within 6 months of death – before your heirs can even inherit their share. CONTROVERSIAL People have widely differing views on Inheritance Tax. Some agree that it is fair to redistribute wealth on death. Others think that what they have accumulated through their own hard work should go to their family and not the tax man. Particularly when they think the Government wastes taxpayers money on ill-fated schemes and endless quangos and jobs for the boys. Whatever your views, IHT could clearly have a huge impact on your family’s future. After all, if you’ve been smart with money all your life you might not

Legal ways to reduce your IHT

EXCLUSIVE READER want to lose a chunk of it when you die. If so, you need to arm yourself with the facts before you can make sensible decisions. A VOLUNTARY TAX The late Roy Jenkins, MP, said Inheritance Tax is a voluntary levy paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue. That’s because there are things you can do to soften the blow for your family or

even avoid IHT altogether. EASY TO READ GUIDE The most important thing is to figure out if you’ve got a problem and if you want to do anything about it. This little book will help you do just that. STOCKTON SENIOR CITIZENS FACING CLOSURE This group of lively pensioners meets at Stockton on the Forest Village Hall on the third Tuesday of every month from 2 – 4pm. They are looking for new people to come and join their merry band or may have to face closure; sadly there have been a number of bereavements from their group in recent years. Each month they have a visitor to entertain them in the Long Room of the hall in the form of a guest speaker or singer covering a wide variety of topics to suit every taste. They also organise a number of coach trips during the year at very reasonable cost. Ann Steel (committee member) writes “Here we are at the last few months of the year and we have some very good trips still to go, so if you are interested give me a call or see Tom at the local village shop for a ticket, just to tempt you we have Barnsley on Saturday 14th November and a very good Christmas Market in Bury on Saturday 12th December. On the third Tuesday of every month we also have some very good speakers, please do try to come along to it, I am sure you will really enjoy it” For more information give Ann a call on tel: 01904 400124 or if you’re a silver surfer have a look at their page on the village website www.stocktonontheforest.org.uk. Membership is just £10 for the whole year. The next meeting is on Tuesday 17th November 2015 at 2pm.

Top Tips from a dental professional

ORTHODONTICS PART 1

T

he dental development of your child goes through 3 phases the Primary, by Christine Parker Mixed and Permanent BDS (GDC 72136) Dentition. Most parents seek our advice when their children are in the mixed dentition (ages 6- 13). Most parental concern is that the teeth look ‘too big’, are twisted, crowded, have spaces or are darker in colour. Firstly teeth often look too large as they start getting the bigger adult teeth from age 6, however they still have their small child’s face. One of the problems for the orthodontist is that your childs face can continue to mature and grow into their late teens, what may appear as a rather crowded mouth at 9 may be perfectly aligned all by itself at 18. When space is short the tooth may twist so it can come through into the available space, again even quite severe twisting can improve as the space available increases. The same applies to gaps. The permanent teeth usually look darker and rougher in texture than the baby teeth, the front teeth may have quite bumpy edges, these are called Mammelons, they tend to wear down as we age. No amount of brushing will make the teeth lighter than their natural shade. If you think your child isn’t brushing properly get them to use disclosing tablets , these will stain any plaque purple or pink and demonstrate where to brush more. Where your dentist suspects a tooth may be missing or out of position they may take an X ray this will usually show if the tooth is present. Where they feel an orthodontic opinion is required they will refer to the local orthodontic clinic. If your child does require orthodontic treatment it is very important that their cleaning is excellent as they can develop cavities and stains on their teeth under the braces. Most orthodontists will not start treatment unless there are no new cavities and the teeth are very clean.

TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

Delightful Dordogne

in the northern reaches, part of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park. Each area is named after its dominant colour: ‘Green Périgord’ in the north, for its lush valleys; ‘White’ in the centre for its limestone plateaux and shepherd huts around Périgueux, best known for its Roman remains and cathedral; ‘Purple’ in the south for the vineyards of Bergerac; and ‘Black’ in the east for the oak and pine forests around Sarlat.

T

he sun is warm, the light translucent and it feels like the South of France. Here on the edge of the Massif Central, the Dordogne river meanders, emerald green or silvery blue, turbulent or placid, shaping the land with fertile valleys and cliffs, gorges and caves. Now imagine four boys chasing after their dog, stumbling upon caves no one knew existed. That was in 1940 when Lascaux began to reveal its 17,000 year old frescoes, so stunning the site became known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Prehistory’. Today it is closed to the public for preservation but visitors from all over the world gaze in wonder at the superb replicas while the nearby troglodyte dwellings beckon, dark and eerie, on the cliff face. Meanwhile fortified villages and castles recall the Middle-Ages when French and English, Catholics and non-conformists, struggled to ascertain their power across these bucolic lands. Today, they simply take

your breath away, mirrored in ever changing waters, here Castelnaud and its medieval museum, there Beynac perched high on a cliff with panoramic views and officially one of ‘the most beautiful villages in France’, just like Domme and La RoqueGageac jostling for space right against the rock on a river bend dotted with canoes. But if white water isn’t for you, the best way to enjoy the river is on a traditional ‘gabarre’, gliding past wooded slopes and towering cliffs, quaint villages and eagle’s nest castles clinging to rocky outcrops. There are herons and wagtails, myriad ducks and lonely kingfishers in luminous colours. The banks twitter with bird song and here and there, a tree dips its roots in the water. High above, the lovely Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac look down on the scene, among woodlands and formal displays fragrant with box. The Dordogne region covers roughly the four ancient counties of the old Périgord province, rich in history and wildlife and

Tucked in a hollow between the Dordogne and its tributary the Vézère, Sarlat is a pleasant market town and a true architectural gem draped in glowing honey-coloured stone. There are elegant town houses, turrets and spires, wrought-iron balconies, archways, steep roofs, fairy tale gables and a Goose Square to remember the old trade. Restaurants set up their tables in quiet gardens and the market is a head-spinning feast of colour and fragrance, olives, truffles in season, asparagus, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries, freshlybaked country bread, cheeses and traditional duck and goose products. Sarlat has no river of its own but the Dordogne is just a stone’s throw away, rising in the Auvergne and flowing west for nearly 500 km to join the Garonne and form the Gironde estuary. But this is indeed a special river for in July 2012, the Dordogne and its watershed were designated Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, proof that in this delightful corner of rural France, locals live in harmony with the natural world.

MOTORING

McLaren 650S Spider

By James Baggott with a rush of oxygen and the heady smell of the outdoors. I’m happy.

Things are moving quickly. Probably a bit too quickly. As I watch the Mercedes GTS fall away into the distance behind me with snatched glimpses in the mirror, it’s clear there’s not much that’s going to catch this thing any time soon. At full throttle and with Track

mode selected, the 650S and I are moving at internal organrearranging speeds across the Welsh moors as it rifles through its ratios. The induction noise is furious, the sucking of the twin turbos gulping down air like a free diver coming up for air. The roof is down and we’re open to the elements; the small, leather and carbon clad cabin is filled

At least I am now, thinking back to that adrenaline rush of speed. In the driver’s seat the 650S demands chess player levels of concentration but my word it is good. McLaren’s supercar offerings have played second fiddle to the drama from Maranello since they arrived – somewhat overlooked by supercar buyers who deemed them ‘too clinical’ and ‘numb’. That’s a shame, because what the British firm has achieved in such a short space of time is to be applauded. The 650S is without doubt a match for any >>

>> offering from Ferrari, but over four days with the car I can sort of see what they mean about the numbness. It’s hard to criticize a car for being too good, but this 650S really is. The stomach churning acceleration is incredible, but it’s laid down in such a perfect manner that it feels like a computer game, not a heart tugging machine. It’s an absolute stunning car to look at. The flippy paint, that shimmers beautifully from black to purple, is an £8,632 option, while it’s adorned with carbon fibre extras like mirror arms (£3,505), diffuser (£7,463) and even yellow seatbelts that you will be charged £2,247 for the pleasure of changing the colour of. What they’re paying for really, of course, is the exclusivity that MSO offers. And supercar buyers like nothing more than exclusivity. That and how a car makes them feel. Fortunately it ticks both boxes very well indeed. I spent a lot of time in the 650S and although over long distances found it a little uncomfortable – the seats don’t recline enough for my giraffe-like limbs. The steering has a crispness to it and feedback I’ve not experienced in a very long time, while it’s hard to imagine how anything could ever feel any quicker than this 641bhp supercar. Goodness knows how a P1 could offer an experience any more intense than this – even now I can’t fathom anything being any quicker. But to the ultimate question, one I was asked many times during our test: would I buy one? As much as I love it, as good as it is and as beautiful as it looks, I’m afraid I just couldn’t. It doesn’t float my boat like a Ferrari 488 and I can’t help looking at the figures and thinking you could have the Mercedes, Civic Type R and Mazda from this test and some change for fuel for the same price. The McLaren is good, but not three cars good.

MY PET IS TERRIFIED OF FIREWORKS, WHAT CAN I DO? by Lucy Nowell BA VetMB MRCVS Station House Vets

The firework season is almost on us again. Whilst it might be exciting for some, it can present a real worry for pet owners – a recent study showed almost half of all dogs in the U.K. show some level of fearful response to loud noises. However, with a little advanced planning there a number of things you can do to help.

WHAT TO DO NOW:

• Take refuge! Prepare a refuge area or hiding place for your pet to go to during the fireworks. You can encourage your dog to use it by placing treats there. • Cats will usually find their own hiding places but you might want to keep them confined to the house prior to the event and will need to provide a litter tray. • There are a number of safe natural products available from your vet that will help keep your cat or dog feel more relaxed. ‘Feliway’® and ‘Adaptil’ ® diffusers are plug in devices that release a synthetic analogue of a pheromone into the home environment which has a calming effect on your cat and dog respectively. Pheromones are released by nursing bitches to comfort her pups and by the cat when they ‘scent gland’ prominent objects. There is also a collar which releases pheromones available for dogs which can be worn continuously for 1 month. • Zylkene® is a supplement available to sprinkle on food for cats and dogs and again helps them to feel calm, this can be used for all sorts of stressful situations. • These products should be started before the event and continued during the fireworks season. • ‘Thunder ‘ shirts work for some animals, this is basically a tight fitting t-shirt which act as a sort of cuddle – the closeness of the material can provide comfort.

ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT:

• Engage your dog in energetic exercise during the day to tire him out, but otherwise try to stick to your usual routine. • Keep your cat in the house and make sure all escape routes are blocked. • Draw the curtains in the room/s the animals may retreat to and turn on some music with a lot of constant drum beats or turn the television up. • If your cat has chosen to hide, leave it well alone until it feels safe to come out, and perhaps leave the lights off in the room it has chosen to hide in.

• Stay calm yourself and avoid fussing over your pets excessively, attempts to reassure or punishing your pet will only reinforce the behaviour as it suggests there was something to be afraid of. • Allow dogs free access to its preferred refuge but otherwise try to be in the same room and act normally, engaged in some sort of activity, apparently ignoring the noise. Keep some toys handy to play with your dog as a distraction. • Horses or ponies should be brought in if possible. Each year we see one or two animals who have panicked by fireworks and injured themselves.

Skylar is a lovely, bubbly girl who is very active so will require lots of long walks to keep her happy. She has had an unstable start in life, so still has a few things to learn, an active and understanding family would be great. She could live with older children and possibly another dog after a successful introduction. Bud is a very sweet boy who gives everyone lots of kisses! He loves attention and is very affectionate. He can be quite bouncy so older children would be ideal for him. He is not so keen on other animals so would need to be the only pet in the home.

GARDENING Gnome Down!

I doubt he saw it coming. A headshot like that was never going to be surviveable and was the mark of an expert.

many gardens… and three countries!

There were no witnesses to this heinous slaughter of an innocent mini fisherman and, to date, I appear to be the only mourner. Chief suspects are a pack of children (names and addresses can be supplied!) last seen in his ‘patch’ a few weeks ago whilst in the possession of a very dangerous looking football. He stood no chance against their well-aimed shots and my piscatorial gardening friend’s sad demise marks the end of a two decade partnership that spanned

Experienced company based in Strensall. INSURED TO 5 MILLION

We first became acquainted when I spotted him perched in a Belgian antique shop, dangling his little fishing rod in a futile but pathetically endearing manner – and I was to be his catch of the day! I bought him on a whim as I was ‘between gardens’ at the time and wanted something that didn’t need watering but had an obvious horticultural link. At that time home was an RAF Officers Mess in Germany where he endured a poisson-free existence, much to the amusement of my colleagues.

attempts and mine from the constant ribbing. It was during this time that he unfortunately lost his ‘tackle’ – at a very memorable black tie dinner where he was sneaked in as our Squadron guest. Apparently, his little rod and plastic fish was last seen in a very surprised diner’s prawn cocktail, much to the hilarity >> of my fellow officers… ha ha.

We both survived in our various ways, his main threat coming from over exuburant kidnapping

>> So, rodless and looking even shabbier than the shabbiest bit of shabby chic you could ever imagine, he finally made it back to Blighty and the peace and tranquility of a garden – albeit with no pond to dangle his imaginary tackle into. I did consider re-arming him with a substitute but I’d got to quite like his strange little grasping hands which were, quite literally, clutching at straws. He never seemed to mind his lack of the tools of his trade but, by way of compensation, I gave him the choicest spot in the garden where his immediate bedfellows were such beauties as hardy orchids and Trilliums. In fact it was only when checking on these yesterday that I discovered his mortal remains where the perpetrators (yes I know it was you Ollie and Theo!) had left him – broken and forgotten. Having just spent the previous few hours doing gardening chores, I was feeling less than enamoured with my lot anyway. As treacherous as it might sound, I’ve never been a great garden tidier and find such activities as mowing, weeding and routine digging really boring. Give me designing, scheming, planting and I’m happy as Larry, but a day spent weeding drives me potty – which is probably why I need such perverse distractions as garden mini people to keep me occupied when I’m doing the essential bits that I don’t enjoy! To cap it all, I was attacked by a wasp who managed to stick me in the neck as I was pulling up some Dandelions – not a great day in the life of this gardener who had just lost a trusty old (plaster) friend in such tragic circumstances. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go fishing ever again…! by Jonathan Wild Gardener and ex-gnome wrangler.
